Director’s Message

Greetings, Alumni.

Very shortly, many of us will come home to alma mater to celebrate Homecoming 2013. Some of our classes will hold their reunions, some for the first time in many years and others as an annual tradition. Other alumni will enjoy their own special reunion, at the football game, on the quad or at the home of a family member or friend.

Wherever the place, there is nothing like a Morgan Homecoming. It is our hope that you have already made plans to come back. We’re excited to welcome you home!

Again this year, many changes are taking place on campus. The buildings adjacent to the Alumni House have been torn down. On the northwest corner of Hillen Road and Argonne Drive, there is clear evidence that our new School of Business and Management is a reality, because the foundation is now being placed.

In spite of all of our progress, we still face challenges. Many of our students were not able to matriculate this year, some because of financial problems caused by the weak economy and by new government policies restricting student loans. When there is a cry for help, the first place you look is to your family. In this case, our alumni are our family. Our President, Dr. Wilson, reached out to you, and many of you responded. And for that, we are grateful. We did not reach our fundraising goal, but we were able to save some of our students. Thank you, Morgan alumni, for your continued dedication and support!

As we continue to move forward, the need for financial assistance remains. If you have not made a gift this year to the MSU Foundation, we encourage you to do so. If you can find it in your heart to send even $5 a year, our alumni participation rate will increase significantly. I know we can do it. I come in contact with so many of you, and I know that Morgan Alumni are “Bear” to the Bone. We’re depending on you!

MSUNAA New National Alumni Officers

On Alumni Day 2013, the new officers of the MSU National Alumni Association (MSUNAA) Board of Directors were announced at the 73rd Alumni Awards and Class Reunion Luncheon.

The following officers were installed at the June 15, 2013 Business Meeting of the MSUNAA for a two-year term, July 1, 2013 through June 30, 2015: Jacqueline L. Lawson, ’75, President; Charles D. ‘Let Justice Prevail!’

s Athletic Director at MSU, Floyd Kerr has to think about the long term. So when we talked with him in early August, Homecoming and his department’s 10-year strategic plan were among the topics at the top of his mind. But he was also excited about a big event only three weeks hence, involving a high-profile opponent for Morgan’s football team. The University had just announced the Bears’ game against Army, at West Point.

“We’ll be playing one of the service academies that represent the entire nation,” he adds. “Matching that with the history of Morgan and all of its contributions to the United States Army, with all of the generals that have been produced by Morgan, all of that puts Morgan on a great national platform.”

Kerr expects the Bears’ Homecoming opponent to attract a lot of positive attention, as well. Florida A&M University is a perennial football power in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC), and the team has a big following to support it on the road.

“I think this will be our most well-attended Homecoming in a number of years,” Kerr says.

Morgan’s Department of Intercollegiate Athletics also had good news to report from the academic front. The University had 55 students on this year’s MEAC Commissioners All-Academic Team, which is composed of scholarathletes who have grade-point averages of 3.0 or higher.

“All of those students were recognized at our Salters Scholar-Athlete Brunch, an annual event that we hold in December,” Kerr says. “That’s a highlight of our program.”

“The commitment to academic excellence is one of the things we constantly work on, throughout the University, and we integrate the athletic program into all of the University’s academic support services,” Kerr says. “Our goals are to recruit athletes, keep them at Morgan and graduate them.

Through the leadership of our President, Dr. Wilson, and our Vice President for Student Affairs, Dr. Banks, the commitment is there to support our recruits.”

Q&A with the MSUNAA President

Alumni News spoke with Jacqueline L. Lawson, ’75, recently, to get an update on her work as President of the MSU National Alumni Association.

AN: Some have said 2012–13 was a tough year for Morgan.

Do you agree?

Lawson: Morgan and the Alumni Association faced some real challenges during the last school year, but the Morgan alumni community rose to the occasion and faced those challenges head on. We are on the road to recovery.

AN: Do you have any numbers to support that assessment?

Lawson: Thanks to the efforts of many, our capital campaign continues: the alumni giving rate topped 13.8 percent in 2012, a 100 percent increase over 2010 and 33 percent over 2011. Alumni chapters around the country are energized, and chapter membership rolls are growing. In fact, we chartered a new chapter in May — the Northern Virginia Alumni Chapter — with 41 charter members.

AN: What’s your call to action for members of the MSUNAA? Lawson: I am challenging all Morgan alumni to reach out to others and get involved with an alumni chapter and the MSU National Alumni Association. I also am challenging alumni to be advocates to attract the best and brightest students to the University. Sign up to represent Morgan at college fairs and other recruitment events in your community. Morgan needs your continued support.

Alumni Day 2013

The 73rd Annual Alumni Awards and Class Reunion Luncheon, held on Friday, May 17, 2013, was attended by more than 500 alumni and guests. There was something special about this luncheon that was felt by all who attended. The group seemed more excited than ever to see their classmates, as they greeted one another with robust hugs. Morgan President David Wilson brought the alumni up-to-date with his state-of-the-university address.

One of the highlights of the annual luncheon is the presentation of class gifts by the reunion class representatives. These gifts include all of those made to the individual classes, regardless of designation, since their last reunion five years ago. This year, the giving period was from Jan. 1, 2008 to May 10, 2013. As each representative approached the podium, there was an air of anticipation, as class members hoped their class had raised more funds than the others. Some, after the amount of their gift was announced, realized they had some work to do in preparation for their next reunion. It was exciting! Classes ending in ‘4’ and ‘9’, 1944 through 2009, will celebrate their reunions during the 74th Annual Alumni Awards and Class Reunion Luncheon, scheduled for Friday, May 16, 2014. Special recognition will be given to our 50th Anniversary Class of 1964, along with Emeritus Class of 1963 and earlier.

Time flies by so quickly, it has been five years since your last reunion. Is your class ready? If not, we encourage you to start as soon as possible by contacting your Class Agent(s), spreading the word and making plans to meet and celebrate! In addition, it is important that your class begin working on your class gift, one that you can be proud to present on that day.

Cyril O. Byron, Sr., Ed.D., ’47, who earned his Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry from Morgan, did so after serving in World War II as a member of the ground crew of the U.S. Army Air Force 99th Fighter Squadron. The squadron was part of the group known popularly as the Tuskegee Airmen. Together with the 332nd Fighter Group, the 99th was nicknamed the Red Tails, the heroic, masterly bomber escorts who helped turn the tide of the war.

This past January, Dr. Byron was a first row guest at the second inauguration of President Barack Obama. President Obama invited the Airmen to both of his inaugurations, and to a showing of the movie “Red Tails” as special guests of the President and First Lady in February 2012. President George W. Bush presented the Congressional Gold Medal to the Airmen in March 2007.

Dr. Byron retired from Baltimore City Community College in 1985 as Associate Dean of the Division of Natural Sciences, Health and Physical Education. He was also the first African-American referee to officiate NCAA Divisions I, IAA, II and III games. He is a member of a family of Morganites. His wife, the late Freda Jefferson Byron, graduated from Morgan in 1944 with a B.A. in international studies. His son, Jeffrey Byron, ’70, earned his Bachelor of Science in mathematics from the University, and his granddaughter, Jada Byron, ’99, is also a Morgan graduate, with a Bachelor of Science in elementary education.

Morgan Grad Directs New Feature Film “Baggage Claim”

David E. Talbert, ’89, has written and directed a new motion picture titled “Baggage Claim.” In this romantic comedy, Paula Patton (“Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol”) stars as sexy but single flight attendant Montana Moore.

When her baby sister announces she’s getting married in 30 days, Montana realizes she’s soon to be the only unwed woman in her family. With the help of fellow flight attendants and a zany network of airline employees, Montana embarks on a 30-day, 30,000-mile expedition to find Mr. Right.

This unforgettable production also stars Derek Luke, Taye Diggs, Jill Scott, Trey Songz, Adam Brody, Boris Kodjoe and two-time Academy Award nominee Djimon Hounsou. The stellar cast also features Lauren London, Tia Morwy, Jenifer Lewis, La La Anthony, Affion Crockett, Rickey Smiley, Terrence J, Nephew Tommy, Christina Milian, and Ned Beatty.

“Baggage Claim” will begin showing in theaters on Sept. 27. Talbert encourages all Morganites and friends to watch for the local opening in their area and attend on the first Friday that the film is shown.

Talbert earned his Bachelor of Science degree at Morgan, in marketing.

Lacrosse Returns to MSU

Men’s lacrosse is back at Morgan State University!

The University now has a Lacrosse Club, which had a 6-2 regular season record and won a spot in the Chesapeake Division playoffs.

Because it is a Club Team, not yet a varsity sport, Morgan’s Lacrosse Club does not get any financial support from the University. Lacrosse Club members have earned great grades, and motel and bus owners have written to President Wilson commending the teams' manners and decorum. The team has also won Lacrosse Day Tournaments at Hampton University and brought home rather nice trophies, one of which is now on display in the University Bookstore.

Now the hard part begins. The Morgan State Lacrosse Club must have your financial support to thrive. The club will travel with the football team in 2013 to play a Fall Ball schedule of lacrosse, budget permitting. The team is looking for 1,000 persons or organizations to contribute about $20 each week to its cause. These donations of a little more than $1,000 per year will enable our team to offer scholarships to highly skilled players and travel more extensively.

‘Morgan Comes To’ Recruitment Initiative Launched

June 2013 was a very busy month for Morgan’s alumni chapters and the MSU Admissions team. The “Morgan Comes To” new student recruitment initiative was launched. The Admissions team visited Chicago, Ill., Philadelphia, Pa., New Haven, Ct., Las Vegas, Nev., and Sacramento, Calif., to provide admissions information and offer on-the-spot admissions decisions to prospective students. Present were Chicago MSU Alumni Chapter members Calvin C. Brandon, President, Eunice Powell, Arlene Pierce and Dr. Ebony Johnson; New Haven alumna Rhonda Lyles Ferrebee; and Philadelphia Alumni Chapter members Gaynelle Fleming, Artis Miller, Angela Mansary and Terence Brooks. The Philadelphia new student recruitment event was held at the First African Baptist Church, courtesy of Terence Brooks. The alumni met with students and parents and provided them with the one-on-one interaction, personal attention and encouragement that can make the difference between students’ choosing Morgan or another school. To the outstanding alumni who participated in this initiative, the Admissions team thanks you for all you do for “Fair Morgan.”

To further express its gratitude, at the Homecoming Business Meeting repast on Friday, Oct. 4, 2013, the Admissions Office will have an Award Recognition and Appreciation Ceremony for the alumni chapters that have assisted in the New Student Recruitment Initiative. The repast will be held in the Calvin and Tina Tyler Ballroom of the University Student Center, immediately after the meeting.

MSU Names Young-Future Alumni Development Associate

The Division of Institutional Advancement welcomes MSU graduate Tara Carter to the position of Young-Future Alumni Development Associate. In this role, Carter is responsible for developing relationships and communications with the University’s young and future Tara Carter, ’09, ’11 alumni, and planning and implementing programs, events and services designed to meet the needs of these groups.

“We’re thrilled to have Tara join our successful team,” notes Cheryl Hitchcock, Vice President for Institutional Advancement at Morgan. “She brings strong communication and organizational skills that will enhance our efforts to advance the Morgan State University mission.”

Before joining Morgan’s Institutional Advancement staff, Carter served as Resident Director at American Campus Communities and as Research and Policy Intern at the Institute for Higher Education Policy. Carter graduated from Morgan in 2009 with a B.A. in political science and international studies and in 2011 with an M.A. in higher education administration.

Former MSU Bear Signs with the Ravens

The Baltimore Ravens have signed former Morgan tight end Visanthe Shiancoe to a one-year contract. The 10-year NFL veteran’s deal is worth $940,000, according to Aaron Wilson of The Baltimore Sun. Shiancoe enjoyed a successful football career at MorVisanthe Shiancoe gan, playing in 30 games and receiving 52 passes for 1,001 yards. In his senior year, 2003, he garnered both All-American Dream Team and All-Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference First Team honors from the NFL Draft Report.

Class of 1943 Celebrates 70th Reunion Anniversary

The Golden Anniversary Committee, headed by Dr. Quinton Wilkes, Dr. Billie Ann Davis and Donald Bowie, was joined by other classmates in preparing for the celebration. The Class of 1963 gift to the University amounted to $74,305.00 and was presented at the luncheon.

The class pledged to endow a $50,000 scholarship for deserving students over the next five years. The class salutes it president, Dr. Quinton Wilkes, for providing leadership and assembling a winning team.

The Class of 1943 celebrated its 70th reunion anniversary at the 73rd Annual Alumni Awards and Class Reunion Luncheon on Friday, May 17, 2013. Three classmates attended the celebration: Bernice Mitchell McDaniels, Lillian Riley Barbour from Georgia and Nancy Carper Kent. The class presented a check to the MSU Foundation, Inc. in the amount of $1,565.

Class of 1969 Plans Its 45th Year Reunion

With the challenging economy we all are facing, there is a greater need than ever for financial assistance to students. Charlotte Alumni Hosts Hall of Fame Inductees

A line of 46 men and women wearing gold gowns and gold caps flowed into Hughes Stadium like honey, adding sweetness to the MSU graduation ceremonies of 2013. More than 50 years had passed since these septuagenarians, among a class of 326 members, had received their degrees in 1963. This year, Morgan conferred more than 1,000 degrees.

Four members of Morgan’s Class of 1955 — Josh Culbreath, Otis Johnson, James Rogers and Herman Wade — “The Flying Foursome,” were inducted into the CIAA Hall of Fame in Charlotte, N.C. Morgan’s Charlotte Alumni Chapter hosted the men during the induction ceremony, in March.

“The Flying Foursome” were considered the best CIAA relay team from 1951 to 1955, earning 26 major titles, winning a number of national events and being invited to participate in international events, including the Olympics for Continued on page 4

Give to Morgan’s ‘Five Dollar Scholarship Fund’ Morgan’s Five Dollar Scholarship Fund is seeking donors to provide financial gifts, large and small, to support academically worthy students of the University. Introduced by Morgan President David Wilson during his inaugural address in October 2010, this ambitious initiative is now building a $5-million endowment fund to be managed by the MSU Foundation. This initial corpus will be augmented by ongoing public and private funding sources.

“It is through education that we will empower successive generations of students and prepare them to be responsible citizens and dynamic leaders in their chosen professions,” said Dr. Wilson, who launched the Fund with a pledge of $100,000.

Morgan Students Named to the MEAC Commissioner’s All-Academic Team

Fifty-five MSU student-athletes have been named to the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) 2013 Commissioner’s All-Academic Team, which recognizes the academic achievements of women and men from the conference’s 13 member institutions. The team includes sophomores, juniors and seniors with a cumulative gradepoint average of 3.0 or better. A total of 886 MEAC student-athletes were recognized.

Howard L. Cornish Alumni Honor Morgan Student Headed to Yale

During the MSU 2013 Commencement rehearsal in May 2013, the Howard L. Cornish Metropolitan Baltimore Alumni Chapter presented the Dr. Clayton C. Stansbury Graduating Senior Academic Achievement Award to Leah Ulise Hawkins.

Hawkins received her bachelor’s degree from Morgan in music, vocal performance. She has been awarded a full scholarship from the Yale School of Music in New Haven, Ct., where she will pursue a master’s degree of music in opera.

New Jersey Alumni Support Scholarships, Community

The New Jersey Alumni Chapter participated in this year’s Franklin Lakes Food Drive of the Franklin Township Food Bank, in Somerset, N.J. The Chapter also hosted its annual Casino Bus Trip in September 2013 and raised scholarship funds toward the chapter’s $2,000 donation to the MSU Foundation.

This year, the MSU Choir performed its 37th spring concert in Philadelphia at the First United Methodist Church of Germantown. The annual event is a scholarship fundraiser hosted by the Philadelphia Chapter of the MSU National Alumni Association.

In June, “Morgan Comes to Philadelphia,” a new initiative, was held at the First African Baptist Church in Sharon Hill, Pa. A team from Morgan’s Admissions Office, Student Housing Office and Finance Office attended, to recruit students and help them apply to Morgan.

D.C. Alumni Enjoyed Summer Activities

On June 29, nine Morgan alumni participated in the inaugural DCHBCU 5K Run and 2K Walk, which was held in Washington, D.C. Morgan’s Washington, D.C. Metropolitan Area Alumni Chapter celebrated its 30th Annual Scholarship Fundraiser Crab Feast on Aug. 4 at Martin’s West in Baltimore. More than 750 alumni and guests enjoyed food, music and a good time. The chapter will host its 31st annual Crab Feast on the first Sunday in August

2014. Plan to be there! On Sunday, Aug. 10, 2013, the chapter hosted its seventh annual reception for students entering Morgan from the D.C. area.

Lt. Col. Aaron R. Andrews, U.S. Army (Ret.), ’74, and his wife, Connie V. Andrews, ’75, had an idea early last year of starting a Northern Virginia Alumni Chapter of the MSUNAA. They researched the idea with Alumni Relations, contacted several Morganites in the Northern Virginia area, conducted six meetings, put together the paperwork and applied for the chapter to be chartered.

The Andrews are happy to say they were successful in pulling it off, beginning the Northern Virginia Alumni Chapter with 41 charter members.

The Chapter is planning to attend the Homecoming Gala in force. The chapter represented Morgan at the Urban League Job Fair that was hosted at the Alexandria Campus of the Northern Virginia Community College.

ALUMNI ON THE MOVE Doreen Allen, ’09, has joined the Black Emergency Managers Association (BEMA), a group dedicated to providing information, networking and professional development opportunities to its members, and to assisting in the long-term recovery of African-American and other minority communities. Allen earned her bachelor’s degree in psychology from Morgan and is now enrolled in the University of Cincinnati’s Master of Science program in criminal justice/law enforcement/crime prevention. She is employed as an Autism Source Specialist at the Autism Society, in Bethesda, Md.

Clarkston Georgia Piedmont Technical College (GPTC) recently announced the appointment of Irvin T. Clark, III, Ed.D.,’05, as the college’s Vice President of Student Affairs, in the newly established administration of GPTC President Dr. Jabari Simama. Dr. Clark previously served as the Interim Vice President of Student Learning Support/Student Services, Associate Vice President of Student Development/Student Services and Dean of Student Services at Frederick Community College in Frederick, Md. He earned his doctorate in Community College Leadership Program from Morgan State University.

Yacob Astatke, D.Eng., ’91, ’10, has received the American Society for Engineering Education’s (ASEE’s) National Outstanding Teacher Award. Dr. Astatke, a professor and associate chair of Undergraduate Studies in Morgan’s Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, is the first African-American to be honored with this award from ASEE. He also received the Society’s Mid-Atlantic Distinguished Teacher Award in 2012. Dr. Astatke earned his bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering and his Doctor of Engineering degree at Morgan.

Shawn B. Coates, ’03, has been selected as the Chief of Staff of the National Intelligence Council at the Office of the Director of National Intelligence. He is responsible for leading and overseeing the day-to-day business operations and administrative functions of the Council. Since leaving Morgan, he has received Dual M.B.A./M.I.S. degrees from North Carolina Central University. He has been working in the intelligence community for the past nine years.

Ava Barnett-Morrow, Ph.D., ’80, has retired as Professor of Microbiology at Gallaudet University, in Washington, D.C. Dr. Barnett-Morrow began her career at Gallaudet as a laboratory technician after graduating from Morgan with a B.S. degree in biology. She earned an M.S. degree and a Ph.D. in microbiology from Howard University. In addition to teaching, Dr. Barnett-Morrow was the director of the mentoring program for new teachers and the coordinator of the internship program. Beginning in September 2013, she will serve as the Vice President of the Morgan State University Alumni Association Washington, D.C. Metropolitan Area Chapter. A certified sign language interpreter for the deaf, Dr. BarnettMorrow has interpreted for Morgan’s Commencement for the past 18 years.

Ruben J. Brooks, ’89, has been selected as the Atlanta Multifamily Hub Director for the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), where he is responsible for managing and minimizing the credit losses on a portfolio that approximates $4.6 billion in multifamily loans, 153,487 units and more than 2,000 loans. A native of Baltimore, Md., Brooks received a Bachelor of Science degree in management from Morgan State University, an M.P.A. from the University of Baltimore and an M.S. in real estate from The Johns Hopkins University Carey School of Business. Before joining HUD, he spent 19 years at Fannie Mae in a number of production, managerial and leadership positions.

David J. Burton, ’67, was recently honored by the Lawyer’s Committee for Civil Rights, with the group’s Frank R. Parker Client Award. The annual award, given this year during the Committee’s 50th Anniversary celebration in Washington, D.C., is for long-term commitment, perseverance and dedication to the cause of civil rights. Burton is president of the Coalition for Equity and Excellence in Maryland Higher Education. The Coalition has filed suit against the Maryland Higher Education Commission, charging that Maryland’s four HBCUs have been the victims of historical unfair treatment as a result of the State’s maintenance of policies of a racially segregated system of higher education.

David R. Craig, ’83, Harford County (Md.) Executive and a member of Morgan’s Harford County Alumni Chapter, recently announced his candidacy for Maryland governor. Craig, a Republican, joined the race on June 3. The Republican primary is scheduled for June 2014. Craig earned a Master of Arts in history from Morgan’s College of Liberal Arts.

“Lazarus: The Musical,” a stage production rearranged and updated by Bill W. Cummings, D.W.S., ’68, recently premiered at the Mead Center for American Theater in Washington, D.C. Dr. Cummings, a renowned worship leader, music director, lyricist, musician, composer, arranger and conductor, is the Music Minister at Little Rock A.M.E. Zion Church, in Charlotte, N.C. He received his Doctor of Worship Studies degree at the Institute for Worship Studies at Wheaton College and earned his Bachelor of Science degree in music education from Morgan.

The Daily Record has named Lorece V. Edwards, Dr.P.H., ’04, Director of Community Practice and Assistant Professor of Behavioral Health Sciences at Morgan, as one of its Top 100 Women for 2013. The honor recognizes outstanding women for their professional accomplishments, community leadership and mentoring. The awards ceremony for the Top 100 Women took place at the Meyerhoff Symphony Hall in Baltimore, Md. Tisha Edwards, ’03, has been appointed interim Chief Executive Officer of the Baltimore City Public Schools. Edwards will lead the system through the 2013–14 school year, while the Baltimore City Board of School Commissioners completes a search for a replacement for former CEO Andrés Alonso, who stepped down on June 30. Edwards, who has four academic degrees, including a Bachelor of Science in health education from Morgan and a Juris Doctor from the University of Maryland School of Law, had been Dr. Alonso’s Chief of Staff since 2009.

Alicia B. Harvey-Smith, Ph.D., ’84, has been appointed President of River Valley Community College in New Hampshire. A noted scholar and educator, Dr. Harvey-Smith is a nationally recognized author, poet, speaker and consultant, with 25 years’ experience in education, leadership, instruction, organizational dynamics, strategic planning, and training and development. Her husband, Donald, a U.S. Capitol Police Officer, is also a Morgan alumnus, Class of 1983. Before taking her current post, she was Vice President for Student Affairs at Baltimore City Community College.

Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley has named Jeanne D. Hitchcock, Esq., ’68, as his Chief Legislative Officer. As she takes on this new responsibility, Hitchcock will remain Secretary of Appointments for the Office of the Governor, a position she has held since 2007, making appointments to more than 600 statewide boards, commissions, judgeships and cabinet positions. As Chief Legislative Officer, she leads the Governor’s legislative agenda and priorities. She earned her B.A. in sociology at Morgan.

The Board of Trustees of Monroe County Community College (MCCC), in Monroe, Mich., has chosen Kojo Quartey, Ph.D., ’82, ’83, as the college’s fifth President. Dr. Kojo earned his Bachelor of Science degree in accounting and his master’s degree in economics from Morgan, and his doctorate in applied economics from Mississippi State University. He served as Provost for the City Colleges of Chicago before taking his current position at MCCC.

Bass vocalist Soloman Howard, ’09, appeared with the Washington National Opera ( WNO) as Il Commendatore in “Don Giovanni,” during the company’s 2012–13 season.

Howard, who earned a B.A. degree in music education from Morgan, is in his third year of WNO’s Domingo-Cafritz Young Artist Program. His recent credits include a debut with Washington Concert Opera as Leone in Verdi's “Attila,” and performances at the Kennedy Center's Millennium Stage with the Conservatory Project. Previous engagements include many concerts with the Morgan State University Choir, including the role of Porgy in Gershwin's “Porgy and Bess,” under the baton of Paul Freeman.

Morgan engineering graduate Shawna Stepp-Jones, ’08, is Miss Maryland Plus America for 2013. Stepp-Jones, who earned her Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering at MSU, is the founder of Divaneering Foundation, whose goal is “to partner with K–12 schools and community organizations to promote STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) education and career paths for young girls through fashion, health and beauty design challenges that focuses on using core STEM subject matter. The foundation is sponsored by Miss Maryland Plus America 2013.

Albert Lewis, ’07, language arts teacher at Walker Mill Middle School in Capitol Heights, Md., has been named the 2013 Prince George’s County Teacher of the Year. Lewis has been teaching at Walker Mill since 2007, the year he received his Bachelor of Science degree in telecommunications from Morgan. “Mr. Lewis brings a wealth of intellect, experience and expertise to his job,” says Nicole Clifton, Ed.D., principal of Walker Mill. “His dedication and passion for the craft and his community are evident in his instruction and other areas, as well.”

H. Keith Moo-Young, Ph.D., P.E., ’91, has been named Chancellor of Washington State University Tri-Cities. He had served as Dean of the College of Engineering, Computer Science and Technology at California State University, Los Angeles since 2006. Dr. Moo-Young earned his Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering from Morgan and began his professional career at the University as an assistant professor. He is a licensed professional engineer with an active research agenda focusing on solid and hazardous waste management and how water transports contaminants through soil.

Ron Owens, ’61, was cited by the American Advertising Federation as one of the Advertising Industry’s Pioneers of Diversity at its Advertising Awards Program in New York City.

Decorated U.S. Army General (ret.)

William “Kip” Ward, ’71, has joined SENTEL Corp. as a Senior Adviser. In this role, Ward leads the company's international expansion efforts from its headquarters facility in Alexandria, Va. Before joining SENTEL, Gen. Ward was an active duty general and inaugural Commander of the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM), the nation’s newest interagency geographic command, responsible for all U.S. defense and security activities on the African continent and its island nations.

Gen. Ward earned his bachelor’s degree in political science from Morgan and his master’s degree in political science from Penn State University.

Musician Danton Derelle Whitley, ’10, has released a CD titled “Danton Whitley, Featuring Mosaic Sound.”

Whitley is Minister of Music for the Refuge Temple Church of God in Christ (COGIC), in Aberdeen, Md. He is also the State Choir Director for the Greater Maryland 1st Jurisdiction of the COGIC and Minister of Music for the Southern Baptist Church – Harford County. He earned his B.A. degree in fine arts (vocal performance, emphasis in classical voice) from Morgan.

His CD and its first single, “It’s Settled,” are available for purchase on iTunes.

Danny Winborne, ’83, was recently elected for a third five-year term as a Planning Commissioner for the city of Gaithersburg, Md. Winborne was the first and is still the only African American to serve as a Planning Commissioner for Gaithersburg. He has a B.A. in economics from Morgan’s College of Liberal Arts.

The Rev. Thomas R. Pumphrey, ’84, senior pastor of Inter-Denominational Church of God in Gaithersburg, Md., and retired administrator in the Montgomery County Public Schools, was honored with a Black History Month Proclamation from the city of Gaithersburg in February. The honor, which was covered in an article in The Washington Post, recognized the importance of his work to the continuing growth and development of the city. Rev. Pumphrey was a custodian at Burtonsville Elementary School when he decided to enroll at Morgan, where he earned a B.A. in sociology.

He went on to become an assistant principal at Burtonsville.

This volunteer position involves attending local high schools and college fairs as a representative of Morgan and identifying quality high school students who are interested in the University. As an Alumni New Student Recruiter, you provide the one-on-one interaction, personal attention and encouragement that can lead students to choose Morgan over another school.

Morgan has begun to expand its student recruitment areas outside of its traditional regions.

We are now targeting the following states: Arizona, Oregon, Texas, Florida, Indiana, California, Alabama, Georgia, New York, Washington State, South Carolina and North Carolina. Dr. David Wilson, our President, has requested a 50 percent increase in the participation rate of alumni in new student recruitment.
