Greetings, Alumni.
Another year! Another fellowship! Another reunion! What a great opportunity to welcome you home to your beloved alma mater, Morgan State University. We hope you make plans to join us at our 74th Annual Alumni Awards and Class Reunion Luncheon, which will be held on Friday, May 16, 2014. During the luncheon, we will honor and present awards to our distinguished alumni honorees and pay homage to the esteemed Class of 1964, our 50th Anniversary Class. How quickly the time has passed. Whether it’s been 5, 10… or 60 years, what a blessing and a privilege it will be to return to Morgan to celebrate with your friends and classmates. There are those whom you may not have seen for years, and, for many, some you may not have seen since the day you walked across the stage to pick up your degree, some you bid farewell to from afar, some with whom you shared loving tears and hugs, and others whom you thought you might never see again. And as you departed, you may have taken a glance over the campus that left you with so many indelible, fond memories. You know life is too short to dwell on the “I wish I had,” “I wish I could,” “I wonder what happened to…,” and “I wonder if I would recognize…” I hope you will seriously consider 2014 as the year of no excuses to return and participate in your class reunion. Life is full of regrets. Let us not make failing to reunite with your classmates and friends during your reunion year be one of them. Memories are precious, but there is nothing like basking in the present. So, start pulling together that special outfit. And if you’re worried about losing a few pounds, you have time to do that, too. To all members of the reunion classes ending in “4” and “9,” make your reunion one for the books. ALUMNUS OF THE YEAR Carl W. Turnipseed, ’69
Carl W. Turnipseed, a native of East Baltimore, received his Bachelor of Science degree in business administration from Morgan in 1969 and later earned his M.B.A. from New York University Graduate School of Business. He also graduated from the Executive Management Program at Columbia University and the Advanced Management Program at Harvard Business School. Mr. Turnipseed recently retired as the Executive Vice President in charge of the Financial Services Group at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. He was the first and is now the only African American to attain the level of executive vice president at the New York Fed and to serve on its executive committee. During his career, Mr. Turnipseed always found time to coach and mentor New York Fed employees and young professionals in the financial service industry, and to give back to his community. He is a founding member of the Board of Directors of Classroom, Inc., a program designed to teach criti-
cal thinking skills to middle school and high school students through the use of computer-based business simulations. He serves on the Dean’s Advisory Council of the University of Buffalo’s School of Business and is also a member of the Board of Directors of the Morgan State University Foundation, Inc. He recently led a task force that produced the Foundation’s first strategic plan and now serves as the chairman of the Foundation’s Development Committee. Mr. Turnipseed is a life member of the MSU National Alumni Association and an inductee into MSU’s Hall of Fame. Mr. Turnipseed has been married for 43 years to Joyce (Hill) Turnipseed, who is also a native of East Baltimore and an alumnus of Morgan (Class of 1970). They are proud parents of their daughter, Danielle, who is an attorney in Washington, D.C. The couple has established the Alice and Willis Turnipseed Endowment, in honor of his parents, to provide scholarships to deserving Morgan students from East Baltimore. Carl W. Turnipseed exemplifies Morgan’s excellence, and the MSU National Alumni Association is proud to name him Alumnus of the Year.
Honorary Alumnus John L. Walters
The MSU National Alumni Association is honored to name Baltimore business owner John L. Walters as the recipient of this year’s Honorary Alumnus Award. Walters is owner and president of Walters Relocations, Inc. (WRI), a full-service residential and commercial moving and storage company established in 1988 and headquartered in Baltimore, Md. Walters started in the moving industry as a laborer for North American Van Lines. Walters, through his years of committed generosity and service, has proven time and again his love for the University. Over WRI’s 25 years of existence, the company has provided summer employment to more
than 200 Morgan students. WRI now employs four MSU graduates on its management team. Walters is a longtime supporter of the MSU Gala, the MSU Department of Intercollegiate Athletics and the Howard L. Cornish Alumni Chapter’s Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship Breakfast. Walters is a member of Groove Phi Groove Fraternity, Inc. He was chairman of the Grooves’ 50th Anniversary celebration, and he led the charge for their $50,000 donation to the MSU Foundation, Inc. The key to success, Walters believes, is to help others succeed.
Special Achievement Award Honoree Irma Gorham, ’74 and ’76
Irma Gorham is this year’s recipient of the MSU National Alumni Association Special Achievement Award. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in community development and regional planning in 1974 and a master’s degree in urban policy planning and policy analysis in 1976, both from Morgan. She also attended Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government. Gorham has more than 40 years of experience in housing development, management, strategic planning, land use planning and private public joint venture initiatives. Today, she is the Executive Director of the Paterson Housing Au-
thority, the third-largest public housing authority in New Jersey and the largest landlord in the city. She interacts with all government entities to facilitate redevelopment efforts that enhance the quality of life in Paterson. Aside from property management and construction, Gorham advocates for programs that provide support services to assist all residents in becoming self-sufficient. Gorham has received many certifications, awards and honors and is an active member and supporter of a number of community organizations and volunteer groups. She is a member of the MSU National Alumni Association New Jersey Alumni Chapter and a Life Member of the MSU National Alumni Association.
Special Contribution Award Honoree Maj. Gen. Thomas L. Prather, Jr., U.S. Army (Ret.), ’62
Maj. Gen. Thomas L. Prather, Jr., U.S. Army (Ret.) is this year’s recipient of the MSU National Alumni Association Special Contribution Award. Maj. Gen. Prather received his commission and a Bachelor of Science degree in music education from Morgan in 1962. In 1974, he earned a Master of Science degree in contracting and procurement from Florida Institute of Technology. During his military service, he held a variety of command and staff positions in the U.S. and abroad. Maj. Gen. Prather completed 33 years of active military service upon his retirement in 1995. He has been a member of the ROTC Enhancement Team for the past 15
years and has chaired the team for the past 10. As chair, he provides advice to the Department of the Army on all matters pertaining to the Morgan ROTC Program. Morgan has benefited directly from his leadership, through a sustained level of ROTC scholarship awards to Morgan ROTC students, through his development and implementation of the highly successful ROTC Mentorship program and in many other ways. Maj. Gen. Prather is a Life Member of the MSU National Alumni Association and the ROTC Alumni Chapter.

Columbia/Howard County Alumni Chapter Gets the Word Out
The Howard County Alumni Chapter has already participated in three college recruiting fairs this fiscal year. The chapter says it is very serious about getting the word out to students in the local area to attend Morgan State University. The chapter adopted two basketball games this past season in the Adopt-A-Game Program and received large applauds from the crowd. The chapter often makes appearances at events in Howard County to publicize Morgan, and it is also gearing up for its two major fundraisers, which will help fund scholarships for new and continuing Morgan students.
Detroit Alumni Chapter Partners with the Pistons
Morgan alumni in the Michigan area participated in a fundraiser sponsored by the Detroit Pistons and Palace Entertainment. The pregame event, Pistons Power Hour, provided an opportunity to meet other HBCU students and alumni, including former Piston’s power forward Rick McHorn, an HBCU graduate. Each school that purchased more than 10 tickets received $10 per ticket for its alumni fund. Andre Moore, ’83, has already attended 12 college fairs in the area recruiting students for Morgan. Howard L. Cornish Alumni Chapter Hosts 700 at the Annual MLK Breakfast
Seven hundred guests helped the Howard L. Cornish Metropolitan Baltimore Alumni Chapter celebrate its 29th Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship Breakfast, at Martin’s West. The breakfast, an annual event, raised more than $25,000 in scholarships. Five students received laptop computers, and scholarships were awarded to 25 Morgan students. Morgan President David Wilson and Jacqueline L. Lawson, ’75, President of the MSU National Alumni Association, spoke at the event. Patrice Sanders, morning news anchor for WBFF-TV 45, was Mistress of Ceremonies. The program was highlighted by honors from the chapter to four persons and two organizations for their accomplishments. Larry S. Gibson, Professor at the University of Maryland School of Law and author of “Young Thurgood: The Making of a Supreme Court Justice,” was guest speaker.
M.B.A. Alumni Chapter Gets Off to a Strong Start
The newly formed M.B.A. Alumni Chapter held its first annual holiday fundraising gathering at the Bahama Breeze Restaurant in Towson, Md., in December. The chapter acquired toys, gifts and gift cards for needy families during the event. The chapter also participated recently in two community service activities in Baltimore: cleaning up a neighborhood park with the Rebuilding Johnston Square Neighborhood Association and volunteering to serve food with “Our Daily Bread,” a hot meal program. A “Then and Now” panel discussion hosted by the chapter brought together recent and past Morgan M.B.A. graduates in a networking environment in which the graduates and current M.B.A. students received professional advice and guidance. The panel discussion turned out very well and proved to be very rewarding for all who participated.
Band Alumni Chapter Marches On
The MSU Band Alumni Chapter is proud to announce the launch of its new website. The website will have information about upcoming events, including fundraisers; membership information; photos of chapter members, and more. Visit the website at www.morganbandalumni.org. The chapter also hosted its annual MSU Homecoming tailgate in October, where current and former members and their friends came together to meet, greet, socialize and share stories about the past. The chapter also participated in the Annual MSU Band Show in December. Former band members from the ’70s, ’80s, ’90s and 2000s had the opportunity to practice and perform with the current MSU Band. The chapter also held its first annual holiday ornament event and T-shirt sale to raise funds for scholarships.
New Jersey Alumni Chapter Donates to Educational, Charitable Causes
The New Jersey Alumni Chapter made a recent monetary donation to the Franklin Township Food Bank in Somerset, N.J., and performed volunteer work for the food bank. The chapter also donated funds recently to the Great Blacks in Wax Museum, in Baltimore, toward the completion of a statue of renowned historian, the late Benjamin A. Quarles, Ph.D. Dr. Quarles was a longtime Professor and Chair of the History Department at Morgan. In honoring its commitment to higher education, the chapter actively participated in and donated to the Black Doctoral Network Conference. The chapter also seeks to increase children’s educational opportunities. Toward that end, the New Jersey Alumni Chapter donated new book bags and clothing to two elementary schools in Dutch Komenda, Ghana.

The Morgan Bears were in the Virgin Islands recently to take part in the 2013 Paradise Jam basketball tournament. Carol Callwood, ’89, President of the Virgin Islands Alumni Chapter and voice of the Paradise Jam, was instrumental in having The Honorable John P. de Jongh, Jr., Governor of St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands, host a reception at the Government House on Saturday, Nov. 24, 2013 in honor of the MSU Men’s Basketball Team and its coaches. Those in attendance dined sufficiently on the exquisite menu that was provided by the Governor. In addition to the basketball team, many Morgan alumni who live in the Virgin Islands also attended, as well as a delegation of Morgan alumni, administrators and staff from the U.S.

Morgan Regent Is 2014 MEAC Distinguished Alumnus
Gen. Larry R. Ellis, U.S. Army (Ret.), ’69, a member of Morgan’s Board of Regents, was honored as MSU’s Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Distinguished Alumnus for 2014. He received the honor during the MEAC Basketball Tournament in Norfolk, Va., in March. Gen. Ellis is Chief Executive Officer of Atlanta, Ga.-based VetConnexx, LLC, which provides jobs and other career opportunities for veterans and their spouses through fulfilling teleservices requirements for the corporate and government sectors. Before retiring as the Commanding General of U.S. Army Forces Command, he served in senior staff positions at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. Gen Ellis earned a Bachelor of Science degree in physical education from Morgan and a graduate degree from Indiana University. He also serves on the Board of Regents for the University System of Georgia.
Morgan State Graduates 12 Ph.D.s from The PhD Project
Two decades ago, there were only 294 African Americans, Hispanic Americans and Native Americans at the front of the classroom in U.S. business schools. Today, that number has more than quadrupled to 1,230, due largely to the work of The PhD Project. Further, 336 are now enrolled in doctoral programs and will take a place at the front of the classroom over the next few years. Twelve of these PhD Project professors graduated from Morgan State University. One of them, Dr. Jan Williams, ’06, was the first person ever to receive a Ph.D. in business at Morgan. All of these professors are now role models and mentors to the next generation of business leaders. The PhD Project, a 501(c)(3) organization founded by KPMG Foundation in 1994, recruits minority professionals from business into doctoral programs in all business disciplines.
Morgan Graduate Gives a Gift of Life
An article published last December on the website of the University of Maryland Medical Center told the inspiring story of MSU alumnus Akil Parker’s vital donation to his father. Parker’s father, Brian Morrison, Ph.D., had been diagnosed with hepatitis C and was in dire need of a liver trans-
plant. When his oldest son, Akil, a math teacher in Philadelphia, learned of his father’s need, he immediately asked whether he could donate part of his own liver. Parker lost more than 15 pounds over the summer, at doctor’s orders, to prepare himself for the surgery, which took place last Dec. 17. Father and son are both doing well: Morrison recuperating in Baltimore and Parker back at work in the classroom. “My father raised me to be the type of man who would step forward to help someone else. NOT to do it wasn’t an option,” said Parker, who earned his Bachelor of Science degree in finance from Morgan in 2003. Morgan Grad ‘Grows the Future’ in China
Danny Evans, ’12, is making a strong positive impression on students in the People’s Republic of China. Evans was a marketing major at Morgan with a minor in political science. After earning his bachelor’s degree, he joined an organization named “WorldTeach,” which was created by students from Harvard University to teach English in China. Today, at age 23, he is living and working in China’s Hunan province, as a volunteer teacher at a model high school named Chang Jun School. In an essay, Evans’ students described him as “a ray of sunshine from the United States…a black teacher who embodies our school motto: Simple, Sincere, Honest, Profound and Resolute.” Evans asks his students to call him by his Chinese name, Wang Gang, and the young people like and respect his determination to learn Chinese language and culture. “As (HBCU graduates and African Americans), we are unrepresented in areas of business and education in China,” Evans wrote to Morgan President David Wilson in January. “As a teacher, I dedicated myself to change the stereotypical views (toward) Americans, especially (those) of African (descent). I am not only educating students about English but (about) becoming world leaders.”
Statue Will Honor Morgan Great
A statue of the Right Rev. John R. Bryant, ’65, will be unveiled on Morgan’s campus this spring. After the unveiling, the wax likeness of the Right Rev. Bryant, Senior Bishop and Presiding Prelate of the Fourth Episcopal District of the African Methodist Episcopal Church, will join those of more than 100 other greats of African ancestry amidst other historical exhibits, at the National Great Blacks in Wax Museum in Baltimore, Md. The unveiling will take place at 10 a.m. on Saturday, June 7, 2014, in Murphy Fine Arts Center’s Gilliam Concert Hall. Bishop Bryant, a social reformer and social activist as well as a clergyman, received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Morgan.

Trust Endowment Benefits Nigeria
Morgan graduate Bareehu Olugbenga Ashafa, ’78, a Senator in the Federal Republic of Nigeria, reports that more than 394 million naira ($2.4 million) has been channeled through his ’Gbenga Ashafa Trust Endowment (G.A.T.E.) Fund as of March 2014, to benefit the citizens of his district in the areas of education, sports and youth empowerment, agriculture, health, and infrastructure development. Sen. Ashafa, who was born in Lagos Island, Nigeria, has represented the Lagos East Senatorial District of Lagos State since June 2011. During his tenure, it was reported, he has sponsored 12 bills and two motions and was instrumental in the execution of Federal Constituency Projects worth more than 584 million naira ($3.6 million) in his district between June 2011 and January 2014. Sen. Ashafa earned his Bachelor of Science degree in biology from Morgan and his Master of Science degree in public health administration from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.

25th Annual Golf Tournament, Coming in May!
Now celebrating its 25th successful year, the MSU Foundation’s Annual Invitational Golf Tournament is one of the oldest tournaments held at the prestigious Turf Valley in Ellicott City, Md. The event is also an important fundraiser, supporting the MSU Department of Intercollegiate Athletics. This year’s Invitational Golf Tournament will take place on Friday, May 2. Check-in begins at 7:30 a.m., and the tournament starts at 9 a.m. A three-hour golf clinic tees off at 9:30 a.m. The start time for the tournament’s Luncheon and Awards Ceremony is 2:30 p.m. Features of the tournament will include a Modified Florida Scramble, prizes for men and women, Super Ticket, a 50/50 Raffle, a Million-Dollar Hole-In-One, Beat the Pro, perks for all contestants, and food and drinks after play. The registration fee is $150 per person, or $35.00 per person to attend the Luncheon and Awards Ceremony only. The fee for the golf clinic is $120 per person and includes the luncheon. Morgan Couples Celebrate Their Bond
The University Memorial Chapel hosted a “Morganites Who Met and Married a Morganite” jazz brunch on February 16, 2014, in the Calvin and Tina Tyler Ballroom of the University Student Center. The attendees witnessed married couples celebrating their lives together, which began during their Morgan days. The event recognized the couples by their year of marriage. The longest-married pair had been wedded for 67 years. The proceeds of the event were used to support the restoration of the University Memorial Chapel. Many of the more than 200 attendees said they are looking forward with great anticipation to next year’s event.

House provides shelter, food, career training, employment assistance and job searches for pregnant mothers and women with children who need special assistance. The donations surpassed expectations because of the chapter’s partnership with the Garden House School in New York. “Teamwork made this all possible, and we were able to save the holidays for those kids and families that needed joy in their lives,” said Chapter President Roger Rojas, ’01. The chapter also participated in several college fairs in the New York area to recruit students to attend Morgan. Last, but not least, the chapter reports that it has established an annual scholarship fund in the name of a chapter member’s mother who recently passed.

Prince George’s County Alumni Chapter Bowls for a Purpose
The Prince George’s County Alumni Chapter held its First Annual Midnight Bowling Bash, “Bowl for a Purpose Fundraiser” in February of this year. The event was held at the Greenway Bowl in Odenton, Md., and was well-attended by alumni, family, friends and supporters of Morgan State University. Everyone had a great time, whether seasoned bowlers or just beginners. The joy of just being near people who love Morgan was very fulfilling. The DJ played music that took attendees back in time and brought people to the floor for line dancing. The Prince George’s County Alumni Chapter has done a good job of branding this event: alumni look forward to attending the outing every year.

Class of 1969 Prepares 45th Reunion Activities
MSU’s Northern Virginia Alumni Chapter (MSUNOVAAC) set up and staffed a Morgan State University table at the 29th Annual Martin Luther King Day Celebration and the 24th Annual Youth Oratorical Contest, a program sponsored by the Prince William County Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. MSUNOVAAC members took the opportunity to highlight the University and provided handouts, brochures and information during the program, which featured extraordinary middle school and high school students who delivered original speeches based on a thought-provoking theme. The program garnered participants from across Northern Virginia and was held at the Hylton Memorial Chapel in Woodbridge. Participation in the event typically exceeds 1,500 persons.
The Class of 1969 extends a special thanks to all who attended its 2013 annual Homecoming Brunch and Hospitality Gathering and/or donated to its Scholarship Endowment Fund. At the brunch, the class presented Dr. David Wilson, Morgan President, with a symbolic $15,590 check for the Class of 1969 Endowment Fund. The class looks forward to having classmates gather on May 16, 2014 at the 74th Annual Alumni Awards and Class Reunion Luncheon, which officially begins the 45th Anniversary celebration of the group’s graduation. Philadelphia Chapter Members Tell Their Morgan Stories
MSU National Alumni Association’s (MSUNAA’s) Philadelphia Chapter had a busy February 2014, attending the Morgan vs. Delaware State basketball contest as part of MSU’s Adopt-A-Game Program, and holding a MEAC International College Fair to introduce local students to MEAC schools. The chapter was also honored by the Office of Admissions for its participation in college fairs in the Philadelphia area. Another item of note: the Chapter President, Dr. Wesley Alford, ’79, kicked off an “If It Hadn’t Been for Morgan” series, in which chapter members told brief stories about how Morgan has influenced their lives. The series proved to be very exciting and motivated chapter members to reconnect with their Morgan experience.
Southern Maryland Alumni Chapter Hosts ‘Blue and Orange’ Fundraiser
The Board of Commissioners of Charles County, Md., presented certificates of recognition to distinguished honorees at the MSU Southern Maryland Alumni Chapter’s eighth annual Blue and Orange Scholarship Dinner Dance and Awards Program, on Saturday, September 14 at the Waldorf Jaycees Community Center, in Waldorf, Md. Proceeds provided scholarships for deserving students who will attend Morgan. The funds also enabled the chapter to continue to engage in numerous community service projects.

The South Jersey Alumni Chapter sought new Morgan students at a college fair at Cumberland County College in New Jersey, last October. The chapter also represented Morgan at an event hosted by Young Men in Charge Foundation, Inc. (YMIC) and will attend the HBCU Fair at Mercer County Community College in Vineland, N.J., in November.

The Class of 1949 will celebrate its 65th Anniversary Reunion during Commencement Weekend 2014. A committee has met several times to plan an exciting reunion. Classmates and family members are invited to attend the 74th Annual Alumni Awards and Class Reunion Luncheon. ALUMNI ON THE MOVE Frederick K. Adams, Jr., D.V.M., ’64, has retired from the private practice of veterinary medicine after 35 years in Silver Spring, Md., and has joined the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Dr. Adams is now stationed in Milford, Del., where as a Supervisory Public Health Veterinarian, he is responsible for enforcing federal meat and poultry inspection procedures before slaughter. The Morgan family has a new Councilwoman/Alderwoman on the City Council of Annapolis, Md. Rhonda Pindell Charles, ’76, was elected to represent the city’s Ward 3 last November and was inaugurated on Dec. 2. Ms. Charles received Morgan’s 1976 Outstanding Achievement in Business Administration Award in her graduation year and went on to earn a J.D. from the University of Maryland School of Law in 1979. Craig Cornish, Jr., ’13, first made national news as captain of Morgan’s national champion Honda Campus All-Star Challenge teams in 2012 and 2013. Then, last December, he was in the national spotlight, again, as a two-day winner on the TV quiz show Jeopardy. Cornish, who is now pursuing a graduate degree at Princeton University, earned $46,800 on the show. Track and field great Josh Culbreath, ’55, has been inducted into the Montgomery County (Pa.) Coaches Hall of Fame. Culbreath helped complete a U.S. sweep of the 400meter hurdles with a bronze medal performance at the 1956 Olympic Games. In the late 1980s, he became the men’s and women’s track and field coach at Central State University in Ohio, where he was named Coach of the Year six times over eight years. He has received many other accolades during his career, including induction into the MSU Hall of fame in 1975. Christine Custis, Ph.D., ’13, has joined the faculty at Rochester Institute of Technology, Saunders College of Business. Dr. Custis is a faculty member of the Information Systems Doctoral Students Association of The PhD Project, a program established to create a more diverse Corporate America by increasing the number of African-American, Latino and Native American business professors. Dr. Custis began with the PhD Project by attending its 2007 conference. With her new position, she is one of only 46 female, African-American information systems business school professors in the U.S. Elwanda D. Ingram, Ph.D., ’69, is the faculty recipient of the 2014 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Building the Dream Award at Winston-Salem State University in Winston-Salem, N.C., where she is a professor of English. She received the award this past January at a joint banquet hosted by Winston-Salem State and Wake Forest University. The award is given to a person who exemplifies the qualities that Dr. King epitomized and who actively exercises them in his or her community. Dr. Ingram is a member of the North Carolina Alumni Chapter of the MSU National Alumni Association and is a lifetime member of the Association. Ronn H. Johnson, Ed.D., ’91, Superintendent of the Lawnside School District in Lawnside, N.J., was recently appointed President of the Camden County Superintendent’s Roundtable. Dr. Johnson earned his Bachelor of Science in business administration at Morgan, an M.A. in school administration at Rowan University and his doctorate in innovation and leadership at Wilmington University in New Castle, Del.
The Morehouse School of Medicine has approved a grant written by Tina Jordan, Ph.D., ’00, ’10, entitled “Behavioral Health Capacity Expansion Grant.” The grant will assist several Master of Social Work students who received field practicum stipends in behavioral health care settings in Delaware. Dr. Jordan earned a B.S.W. at Morgan, an M.S.W. at the University of Maryland – Baltimore and her doctorate at Morgan’s School of Social Work, where she was the first student to receive a Ph.D. A new book by Lolita A. Kelson, ’81, “It’s Not Personal, It’s P..You Know What It Is: Real Men Feel,” attempts to give women a revealing look into the minds and hearts of men. In her volume, Kelson sets out to give a voice to men who have trouble expressing their feelings. The men she writes about open up about their relationships with women. The book is available at Amazon and Barnes & Noble. Ann Koger, ’72, Head Coach of Women’s Tennis and Associate Director of Athletics at Haverford College in Pennsylvania, was featured in the Summer 2013 edition of NCAA Champion Magazine. The article covered Koger’s pioneering role in women’s — and men’s — tennis during the civil rights era, her controversial tenure as a news reporter, her work as an educator and her long, award-winning career as a coach. Also, Koger’s longtime Assistant Women’s Tennis Coach at Haverford, Louis Bolling, ’02, has graduated from the NCAA Leadership Institute in Washington, D.C. The institute provides tailored programming conducted on NCAA member institution campuses to assist participants in strategically mapping and planning their careers. The Gary/Chicago International Airport Board has appointed B.R. Lane, ’95, as its Interim Director. Lane most recently served as Chief of Staff to Gary Mayor Karen FreemanWilson. Lane, who was also featured as one of The Times of Northwest Indiana’s “20 Under 40 Class of 2013,” was an undergraduate at Morgan when she began working for Freeman-Wilson’s law office during summers and became her protégé. Lane also has a law degree from Harvard University. Maysa Leak, ’91, earned a 2014 Grammy nomination for her song “Quiet Fire,” a record from her latest album, “Blue Velvet Soul.” The nomination, in the category “Best Traditional R&B Performance,” was Maysa’s first in a 22-year career that has taken her from collaborations with artists such as Stevie Wonder, Chaka Khan, Incognito and Angela Bofill to her current work as a soloist. Chinor M. Lee, Sr., ’98, is now a Senior Employee Development and Training Specialist for New Jersey Transit, responsible for overseeing and administering Microsoft Office training for the agency’s 12,000-plus employees and for facilitating classes in Dynamic Presentation Skills. Lee earned his Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering from Morgan and received a Master of Divinity degree from Princeton Theological Seminary in 2013. MSU Director of Business and Auxiliary Services Vinetta Paige McCullough, ’76, ’81, has received the Certified Auxiliary Services Professional (CASP) designation from the National Association of College Auxiliary Services. The designation recognizes proficiencies in management and leadership, business relations, marketing and student development within auxiliary operational areas on campuses.
U.S. Deputy Chief Immigration Judge Michael C. McGoings, ’65, has become a member of the Senior Executive Service, continuing to directly supervise the Assistant Chief Immigration Judges and the 58 field courts. Judge McGoings earned his bachelor’s degree in political science at Morgan and began his career with the former Immigration and Naturalization Service in 1987. He is a member of the District of Columbia and Pennsylvania bars. Wilfred N. Ndifon, Ph.D., ’03, an expert in the application of immunology and mathematics to the study of the mechanisms and dynamics of infectious diseases, is visiting the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences, South Africa, as a research fellow. Dr. Ndifon was born in Cameroon and earned his Bachelor of Science degree in biology at Morgan. William Redmond, ’08, was featured in an article titled “Recruited by NAVAIR,” in US Black Engineer & Information Technology magazine. Redmond is an electrical engineer with the Core Avionics Division of NAVAIR (Naval Air Systems Command), where he provides engineering support and technical recommendations to program management for the communications systems on the U.S. Marine Corp’s H-1 helicopter. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering from Morgan. A memoir by Phillip B.J. Reid, ’75, titled “Three Sisters Ponds: My Journey from Street Cop to FBI Special Agent — From Baltimore to Lockerbie, Pakistan and Beyond,” has been published by AuthorHouse. The book covers Reid’s 36-year career in law enforcement and discusses pursuing dreams and setting challenging and aggressive life goals. Reid earned his bachelor’s degree in sociology from Morgan. MSU Head Volleyball Coach Ramona Riley-Bozier, ’89, ’11, already the winningest head coach in Morgan history, gained her 400th career win last fall, when the Lady Bears defeated Delaware State. Bozier has claimed five Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) championships, five MEAC Coach of the Year awards and four MEAC Tournament Most Outstanding Coach honors and has guided three teams to the NCAA Tournament. Her 1997 team was the first HBCU squad to earn a trip to the NCAA Division I Tournament. Former MSU Cheerleader Amanda Ross, ’13, has been crowned Miss Maryland 2014 and will represent the state in the Miss United States Pageant in Washington, D.C., in July. Ross, who earned her Bachelor of Science degree in physical education at Morgan, is now a Baltimore Ravens Cheerleader and a gymnastics instructor at the YMCA in Baltimore City. John W. Ruffin, Jr., ’63, was recently honored as a Distinguished Community Leader by the Ancient Spanish Monastery Foundation. He received the honor during the foundation’s Legacy Gala, which was held at the monastery, in North Miami Beach, Fla. Ruffin has a B.A. in geography from Morgan. Albert E. Sweets, ’94, has received a 2014 Black Engineer of the Year Special Recognition honor from Career Communications Group (CCG). Sweets has a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering from Morgan and is CEO of Innovative STEM Solutions, LLC (iSTEMS), an organization that seeks to build sustainable relationships between academia, government and private companies. In giving the award, CCG noted his long history of community service.
Retraction! A news item on page 5 of the Fall 2013 issue of MSU Alumni News, in the “Alumni on the Move” section, mistakenly identified Tisha Edwards, who had just been appointed Interim Chief Executive Officer of the Baltimore City Public Schools, as a Morgan State University alumna. In fact, Ms. Edwards’ son attended Morgan, but Ms. Edwards did not. Ms. Edwards received her Bachelor of Social Work degree in 1998 from Georgia State University in Atlanta, Ga., her Master of Social Work degree in 2000 from the University of Maryland School of Social Work in Baltimore, Md., and her Juris Doctor in 2001 from the University of Maryland School of Law in Baltimore, Md. The MSU On-Campus Alumni Chapter is seeking year-round clothing donations for its Professional Career Closet. The program provides free professional apparel for male and female students seeking internships and/or jobs. Legacy Meet Returned in April
The 11th Annual Morgan State University Legacy Track and Field Meet brought nearly 40 men’s and women’s events to Hughes Stadium on April 18–19, 2014. Contributions to the event benefited the MSU Athletic Department.
Lee Hull Named MSU Head Football Coach Morgan has a new head football coach. Lee Hull, former assistant coach at the University of Maryland,CollegePark, was introduced to the Morgan family on Jan. 9, 2014 by Morgan Athletics Director Floyd Kerr. Hull, 48, the 19th head football coach in Morgan history, brings an impressive resume to the job. The Vineland, N.J., native spent the past six seasons at Maryland as wide receivers coach. During his time there, he helped coach a number of players to NFL careers, among them, Torrey Smith of the Baltimore Ravens and Darrius Heyward-Bey of the Indianapolis Colts. He also built one of the most talented receiving corps in the Atlantic Coast Conference in 2013. Before coming to Maryland, he coached at Oregon State University and at his alma mater, the College of the Holy Cross, where he was a standout wide receiver and earned his bachelor’s degree in economics. Hull also has a master’s degree in secondary education from Worcester State University. After his graduation from Holy Cross, Hull gained experience as a professional player, in the Canadian Football League. “I want you to know that my No. 1 goal as head football coach is to help our student-athletes graduate from Morgan State University….” Hull says. “I want you

Alumni Giving Is on the Rise!
Morgan’s alumni participation rate has risen for the third consecutive year! We ended calendar year 2013 with an alumni giving rate of 16.52 percent, which is a 19 percent increase over 2012 and a 155 percent increase in the rate of alumni giving since 2010.
