Director’s Message

Dear Alumni,

It’s reunion time at Morgan State University! Please plan to join us at our 75th Annual Alumni Awards and Class Reunion Luncheon on Friday, May 15, 2015, as we celebrate our classes ending in “5” and “0,” along with our Emeriti Classes. As always, we will recognize some of our alumni for their worthy accomplishments and contributions to Morgan and their communities. In addition, one of our outstanding chapters will be recognized as “Chapter of the Year” for some of the great things it has done this past year. Class of 1965, as you prepare to celebrate your grand 50th Anniversary, I can only imagine how exciting this time must be for you. The 50th Anniversary Committee has been working extremely hard to make your return to campus memorable, and so have we. Of course, other classes are preparing for their special anniversaries, as well. We hope you have made contact with your class members and have encouraged them to meet you on Morgan’s campus on May 15. Just remember: every reunion is and should be special! It is important that you support your class and your alma mater. I am sure many of you have heard about the various problems surrounding our HBCUs. Some are having accreditation issues, some have received recommendations to close for a time, and some have already closed their doors. We are grateful that our Morgan State University is on solid footing right now. I know, firsthand, that many of you have made regular financial contributions to the University, supported our various events and activities, lent your voices to our various causes, recommended students to the University and sent your own children here as students. Whatever you have done or are considering, it has and will continue to make a significant difference. We encourage you to continue to do your part. For now, come back to the campus, and show your “Bear Pride.” Be a part of your reunion! Remember, “It’s all about the journey, and the friends you meet along the way.”

The Morgan On-Campus Alumni Chapter of the MSU National Alumni Association was founded in October 2002, as an organization to keep Morgan graduates who work at Morgan connected. To reach the larger MSU community, the chapter decided to open its membership to those who live and work nearby. This chapter is unique, because it is located on Morgan’s campus and can connect directly with the student body. The Morgan OnCampus Alumni Chapter fully recognizes the importance of education, celebrates the achievements of Morgan students and encourages alumni to always give. The Morgan On-Campus Alumni Chapter supports Morgan’s athletic program at football and basketball games, through the Adopt-A-Game program, and annually sponsors a bus trip to the New York Urban League Football Classic. The Chapter continually recruits new members to join the chapter and the MSU National

Alumni Association, especially at Morgan Memories, a Homecoming event sponsored by the chapter. The chapter sponsors and promotes the “Benefits for Books Concerts,” which raise funds for books for students in need and have featured nationally known artists such as Pieces of a Dream. At the 74th Annual Alumni Awards and Class Reunion Luncheon, in 2014, the chapter awarded a deserving student a $1,000 book scholarship. The chapter also has established a $10,000 Endowment Scholarship Fund with the MSU Foundation, Inc. and, more recently, established the “Career Closet,” which provides free professional attire for students who want to make the best first impression with potential employers. For these reasons, and many more, the Morgan OnCampus Alumni Chapter is the recipient of the Chapter of the Year Award for 2015.

Tanya Rush, ’79 and ’87, Morgan’s Associate vice President for Student Affairs, was among those recognized as “Champions of Change” by the White House on Tuesday, Feb. 24, 2015. Her primary responsibilities include oversight of the division’s fiscal affairs, and direct oversight of the Directors of the University Health Center, Student Center/Student Activities and the University Chapel. Always willing to serve, Rush volunteers her time with numerous University committees and worthwhile community activities. But her greatest joy is her service to students, undergraduate and graduate. She is student-centered and dedicated to the academic, personal and professional success of students.

Morgan Hosts ‘Living Red Ribbon’ Event for HIV Awareness

The MSU School of Community Health and Policy is honored to have been the academic host of the Third Annual “Living Red Ribbon Event,” presented by the community organization B’More Aware of HIv, on Dec. 1, 2014, in observance of World AIDS Day. Lorece Edwards, Dr.P.H., Associate Professor in Morgan’s Department of Behavioral Health Sciences, and Tom Bonderenko of the nonprofit organization Moveable Feast led the effort to bring the event to Morgan’s campus. The red ribbon has signified awareness of HIv and support for those living with the virus, since 1991. At the observance at Morgan, people from across the city donned red ponchos and formed a “living red ribbon” on the Hughes Stadium field. Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake, Baltimore City Councilman Nick Mosby and Interim Baltimore City Health Commissioner Jacquelyn Duval-Harvey, Ph.D. participated in the ribbon formation, joining students from Morgan, other universities and Baltimore City Public Schools, who made up the corps of volunteers. A Health Fair was also held, featuring vendors and various other organizations. An emphasis on HIv/AIDS is part of ongoing research and program development in the School of Community Health and Policy, in the area of sexual health.

This work is being led by Dr. Edwards through her student- and community-focused Get SMART project and other funded research.

You Deserve a Round of Applause!

Many thanks for your support of Morgan State University’s Fiscal Year 2014 fundraising campaign. Your investment enables us to fund scholarships for students; the purchase of computers and research materials for the classroom; stipends for travel; and professional development opportunities for students and faculty. Morgan ended Fiscal Year 2014 with an alumni participation in giving rate of 17 percent. This represents a 163 percent increase in overall alumni giving since 2010. Thanks to alumni, like you, Morgan is doing well in bucking the national trend in alumni giving, which has decreased precipitously over the last 20 years. One gift, every year, in any amount from our alumni, does much to strengthen Morgan’s credibility in attracting institutional dollars, experienced faculty and outstanding students. Thanks again for helping Morgan continue to soar! Growing the Future, Leading the World! United Way and Combined Charity Campaign for Baltimore City #3052. Combined Federal Campaign #49337. Wilson Goode, ’61, as he preached the 158th Anniversary sermon at the Kaighn Avenue Baptist Church in Camden, N.J. Seeking Precious Morgan Memories for the Sesquicentennial ‘Treasure Chest’

Morgan State University is preparing for its Sesquicentennial Celebration, which will be held during the 2017 calendar year. Part of the University’s plans is to assemble an extensive collection of photographs, records, historical documents, personal stories and other memorabilia that make up Morgan’s rich history. Many of those collectible items lie in the hands of our alumni, retired employees and friends. During the 2015 calendar year, we shall put together a Treasure Chest of Morgan Memories, which will tell the documented and undocumented stories of the students, faculty, administrators, alumni, supporters, events and achievements that are part of Morgan’s composite history. We invite you to join us in this effort by sending us photographs, documents, facts and brief narratives of memorable moments in your Morgan experience. When sending photographs, please note the date, location and subject, and identify the individuals who appear in the photograph. For all other items, please identify the sender (including your last name when you were a student) by degree, year of graduation and major. Items selected for use during the Sesqui-

centennial Celebration will become part of the permanent Archives of Morgan State University. You may send your memories in hard copy to: Sesquicentennial Celebration Office, Room 323, Earl S. Richardson Library, Morgan State University, 1700 E. Cold Spring Lane, Baltimore, MD 21251. Or, you may send them by email to Celebration150@Morgan.edu. Be sure to include your contact information, so we can respond by sending you a consent form to use the information you submitted. The various print and electronic publications that use the items you send will acknowledge your contribution in those publications. Thank you for helping us with this Sesquicentennial Celebration project, and please stay tuned to Morgan’s webpage for updates on the 2017 Celebration.
