HOMECOMING 2015
Director’s Message Greetings, Morgan Alumni. Are you ready for some football? Are you ready for a good time? Are you ready to meet your friends, your sorority sisters or your fraternity brothers on the yard, under the tent or in the stadium? Well, Morgan State University Homecoming 2015 is just around the corner, and we’re making every effort to ensure it will be another memorable one! As always, whether you were here last year or you have not returned for several years, when you come to a Morgan Homecoming, there will be guaranteed fun for everyone. When you arrive on campus, there’s always something new. Plan to come early to tour our new building housing the Earl G. Graves School of Business and Management, which has been completed and is now fully occupied by our students. What a marvelous facility! And my, how the time has passed. It wasn’t so long ago when I informed you that it was under construction, then nearly completed and now fully completed. Morgan’s campus is ever-evolving, and there is clear evidence of how much we continue to grow. We welcome you, again, to join us at our Morgan State University Alumni Association (MSUAA) Annual Homecoming Business Meeting, which is scheduled for Friday, Oct. 16, 2015 at 12 p.m. in the University Student Center Theater. Please stop by, meet your new 2015–2017 officers of the MSU Alumni Association, and fellowship with some of our chapter presidents, their members and other alumni, as we bring you up-to-date on the Alumni Association and the University. Dr. Wilson will, again, join us for a campus update, and he’ll be available for a brief question and answer period. On Saturday, Oct. 17, get ready for an exciting football game, as the 2014 MEAC Champion Morgan Bears take on the Hampton Pirates in Hughes Stadium at 1 p.m. Rivalry will definitely be in the air! Let the Orange and Blue outshine the Blue and White. Show your Morgan Pride by wearing your Morgan colors. After all of the fun and fellowship, the weekend would not be complete without remembering those who are no longer with us. Plan to join us on Sunday, Oct. 18 at 11 a.m., in the University Memorial Chapel, as we light a candle in memory of our deceased alumni, faculty, staff and students. Surely someone on that list has touched you in a special way. Honor his or her memory with your presence. Best wishes for the best Homecoming ever! Sincerely, Joyce A. Brown, ’86 and ’01 MSU Director of Alumni Relations

Let There Be No Doubt!
A
fter all he did before the start of last season to promote Morgan football’s “Return to Greatness,” it must have been tempting to say, “I told you so.” But, to his credit, MSU Athletic Director Floyd Kerr is sticking with the facts. When asked about the Bears’ 2014 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Championship, their first in 35 years, Kerr said, “I did not predict a championship. But, I did expect that we would have a quality, competitive football team and that the style of play would be exciting to our fans.” The 2014 Bears shared the MEAC title with four other teams and went on to represent the conference in the NCAA playoffs. This season, second-year Head Football Coach Lee Hull will continue leading the team on its “Return to Greatness” with the rallying cry, “Let there be no doubt.” “They want to leave no doubt that this is a successful football program,” Kerr explains. Success, he emphasizes, means academic as well
as athletic excellence: “The coaches have worked very hard to make sure that their young men are focused on their academic performance as well as their athletic performance, and that they’re conducting themselves well in their social lives. I think the alumni have noticed the change in these young men, and they’re excited about it.” For Homecoming this year, Kerr expects the contest between the Bears and the Hampton Pirates to be tough and exciting, with lots of offense. Among the other highlights of the 2015 schedule was Morgan’s first-ever game against the Air Force Academy, at the Falcons’ home stadium in Colorado. Morgan has logged another first with the hiring of a marketing director for athletics, Robert Anderson, and a firm to assist him with marketing and promotion, Kerr reports. “I hope our alumni enjoy the things that they’ll be involved with during this football season,” Kerr says. “It’s going to be a great year.”

Good Memories Remain from Alumni Day 2015
What a celebration! As Alumni Day 2015 has come and gone, the memories of that day are still fresh for those who participated in the festivities. Classmates — some of whom had not visited since their graduation — converged on the campus along with family and friends, marveled at the beautiful landscape and perused the new buildings as well as the facilities under construction. Excitement could be heard throughout the Student Center ballroom, during the 75th Annual Alumni Awards and Class Reunion Luncheon, as classmates shouted the names of old acquaintances and made warm embraces, overjoyed to be in the presence of old friends. Our Master of Ceremonies for this year’s luncheon was the talented and gracious Lamont Germany, ’80, an accomplished, 30-year veteran of the broadcast industry and the play-by-play announcer of MSU athletics. A highlight of the annual luncheon is the presentation of class gifts by the Class Agents or Class Representatives. This part of the program has become an exciting competition among the classes. The amounts presented to the MSU Foundation this year included all gifts from Jan. 1, 2010 to May 8, 2015, regardless of fund designation, since the classes’ last reunion five years ago. The following is a list of reunion classes and gifts presented: Class of 1945.................................................. 660.00 Class of 1950........................................... 425,965.00 Class of 1955............................................. 39,004.95 Class of 1960............................................. 79,419.20 Class of 1965........................................... 157,595.50 Class of 1970........................................... 169,912.97 Class of 1975............................................. 53,809.50 Class of 1980............................................. 71,740.29 Class of 1985............................................. 14,238.02 Class of 1990............................................. 15,629.00 Class of 1995............................................. 10,558.00 Class of 2000............................................. 10,320.50 Class of 2005............................................. 13,472.76 Class of 2010 .............................................. 5,634.72 Total Class Contributions..................$1,067,960.41 Classes ending in “6” and “1”: what will your class gifts look like on Alumni Day 2016? IN THE NEWS Morgan Graduate Helen Lee Celebrates Her Centennial
Inside her elegant home in West Baltimore, six weeks after her 100th birthday, Helen C. Lee of Morgan’s Class of 1957 handles our questions with the poise of a veteran. Her time as a social worker in the 1960s, she explains, gave her much experience with interviews. Lee came to Morgan as a nontraditional student after years of marriage, when her two eldest children were in high school and her youngest was still a baby. She earned her A.B. degree in sociology in three and a half years, while her husband, physician Charles Dudley Lee, maintained his medical practice. She got along well with her classmates at Morgan, most of whom were more than a decade younger, made great friends, pledged Alpha Kappa Alpha and went on to get a Master of Social Work degree from Howard University. Lee was born in Anderson, S.C., and left home at 16 to attend the nursing school in Carroll County, Md., where she met her husband. After graduating from Morgan, she was a social worker for the Baltimore City Department of Social Services, Johns Hopkins Hospital and the Baltimore City Public Schools. She retired from her last job, in the admissions unit of Rosewood Center, in 1980. Attorney Alice G. Pinderhughes, a close friend of the Lees, is establishing a $10,000 endowment at Morgan in Helen’s honor, to benefit nontraditional students.

Target Stores Renovates Morgan’s Career Closet
The Professional Career Closet, sponsored by Morgan’s On-Campus Alumni Chapter, accepts clothing donations that enable the chapter to provide professional apparel for male and female students seeking internships and jobs. The program also helps students who can’t afford to purchase professional clothing. This past summer, team members from Target Stores gave the program a helping hand, by renovating the Career Closet’s space in MSU Career Development and turning it into a showroom. The chapter had a ribbon-cutting for the new showroom on Thursday, July 30. There was a great turnout for a great cause. The Morgan On-Campus Alumni Chapter thanks Target Stores and all alumni and other individuals who donated clothing to make this program a reality for Morgan students. Please visit the showroom. Donations are greatly appreciated. All items must be cleaned before they are donated.
Maryland HBCU Equity Case Moves Forward
David J. Burton, ’67, President of the Coalition for Equity and Excellence in Maryland Higher Education, reports that the Coalition’s legal case against the State of Maryland is moving forward. The Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals has denied a State of Maryland request to stop proceedings toward a remedy in the District Court on the HBCU Coalition case until the appellate court had reviewed the lower court’s October 2013 ruling against the State. District Court Judge Catherine Blake’s court found in 2013 that the State of Maryland continues to operate a dual and unconstitutional system of higher education, because of the unnecessary program duplication at its Historically Black Institutions and Traditionally White Institutions. The refusal of the Fourth Circuit to review the Coalition decision allows Judge Blake to continue toward final judgment on an appropriate remedy.

MSU Implements Smoke-Free Campus Policy
Morgan State University is smoke-free! President David Wilson has taken steps to promote a healthier campus environment with implementation of a new smoke-free campus policy. The new policy, unanimously approved by the Board of Regents earlier this year, extended the ban on smoking inside University buildings to include a total ban on smoking anywhere on the campus, including exterior spaces. It bans smoking or carrying any lighted tobacco product and also prohibits so-called e-cigarettes, hookahs and pipes. The policy applies to faculty, staff, students, vendors, guests and visitors to the campus and took effect this past July 1, after an extensive communication campaign to educate constituents about the policy change.
