Morgan’s National Alumni Association is growing in myriad ways. This past May, at Commencement, we added 1,201 graduates to our ranks. Now more than 26,000 strong, we are primed to help Morgan continue to expand, reach new heights and maintain educational excellence. The University is doing some fantastic things that I’m certain you will want to be a part of. In September, we will open the new Center for the Built Environment and Infrastructure Studies on the North Campus. Planning for the new School of Business and Management Complex on the West Campus — now part of the Northwood Shopping Center — will continue. Improving customer service is a main focus of the administration, to ensure students and parents experience excellent service in all facets of the University. Alumni giving remains a focus in 2012–2013. The alumni giving rate exceeded expectations in 2011, reaching double digits for the first time ever. Thank you! Let’s continue this trend and demonstrate to all that we sincerely care about Morgan and are committed to its growth and student development. The Alumni Association will continue its efforts to increase enrollment here and abroad. Alumni chapters are reaching out to alumni everywhere to increase participation in events in their hometowns, as well as on Morgan’s campus. I encourage you to support our students by attending games and other events where they are competing and performing. Please continue to support college fairs to espouse the virtues of Morgan and recruit great students to attend. This academic year, a U.S. District Court Judge in Baltimore is expected to render a decision in the case Coalition for Equity and Excellence in Maryland Higher Education, et al. v. Maryland Higher Education Commission, et al. The Coalition is suing the State for years of inequitable funding and treatment. Final arguments in the long-awaited trial are scheduled for Oct. 19, 2012. The judge’s decision will follow sometime later. Let’s remain vigilant and hope for a favorable outcome in this case, as it will impact HBCUs across the nation. Homecoming Weekend is Friday, Oct. 12 through Sunday, Oct. 14, 2012. Gather your classmates, roommates, brothers, sisters, chapter members and friends, and attend the alumni meeting, the gala, the football game, the Alumni Memorial Service and lots of other activities, as we reflect on and celebrate our alma mater. HOMECOMING 2012 The Right Formula!

f their strategy pans out, by the time they face the North Carolina Central Eagles in Morgan’s Homecoming game on Oct. 13, the Bears should be a lean, mean football team with a winning formula, says Floyd Kerr, MSU Director of Athletics. The Bears start their season with three tough nonconference opponents before taking on the North Carolina A&T Aggies and the Savannah State Tigers in road games. This should all be good preparation for the Eagles, in Morgan’s first home game this year against a MidEastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) team. Kerr says he expects a Homecoming game well worth seeing. “(The Eagles) are a feisty bunch, new to Division I,” he says. “They’re building a program, and they come to play. You have to play to beat them, and they travel well. They’ll bring a nice crowd of people with them. It’ll be a good game,” and well-attended, as always, he adds. Several special promotions are being planned to boost attendance at the other home football games this year, Kerr reports, including “Youth Day,” when pre-college students are being invited to tour the campus before the Sept. 1 season opener against Sacred Heart. Other highlights of the schedule include two games to be nationally televised on ESPNU — the Aggies on Sept. 27 and Delaware State (“Orange Out Day”) on Oct. 25 — in addition to the Urban League Classic against Hampton University, in Yankee Stadium on Nov. 17. Kerr reminds us that Morgan places a strong emphasis on the academic performance of its scholar-athletes. “As far as NCAA requirements for academics, we’re on solid footing,” he says. “We’re meeting with

our student-athletes more often than in the past, and I think that’s really helped…. We did a series of seminars last year, called our Empowerment Seminars,” during which the students talked with experts on topics such as planning for graduate school; professional networking; African Americans in sports and society; and getting a job. Kerr believes that encouraging good scholarship among athletes benefits society in the end, because athletics is often a pathway to leadership in the workplace. “What we’re finding is that companies are coming to us,” he says, “and they’re recruiting student-athletes because of the skills set they develop by being on a team, by being in a competitive arena, in combination with their academics, their social life and how they balance all of that out. The skill sets are transferable to industry.”

The MSUNAA iModules Online Community is an interactive website designed specifically for Morgan State University Alumni. The Online Community site allows you to stay connected with the University and fellow alumni, free of charge. Log in, and search for alumni, classmates and friends; create and customize your own profile page; share photos; post class notes and your résumé; participate in group discussions on the message board; search for employment opportunities; register for events; and stay up-to-date on all of our University and chapter events listed on the homepage. In reviewing our statistics, we found out that since the site was launched two and a half years ago, only 4,640 of the 26,000 alumni in our database have actually used the site. The MSU National Alumni Association is making a significant investment in maintenance fees and man-hours to provide this site for you. We need to know that the investment is worthwhile. Alumni Day Draws Record Numbers The 72nd Annual Alumni Awards and Class Reunion Luncheon was held on Friday, May 18, 2012 in the Calvin and Tina Tyler Ballroom, University Student Center, with more than 500 alumni and guests in attendance. The room was filled with excitement, as classmates greeted one another — in some cases for the first time since their graduation — with warm embraces, smiles and laughter. Morgan’s President, Dr. David Wilson, was there to greet attendees with a handshake, a hug and words of encouragement. During the program, he held the alumni’s attention closely, as he brought them up to date on University news and reported on the various Morgan programs and facilities in the works. Every eye was on the class representatives as they stepped to the podium to present their class gifts. The audience anticipated the amount that each class would announce. The gifts included all of those made by members of the classes, regardless of designation, since their last reunion, five years ago. The giving period was Jan. 1, 2007 to May 11, 2012. An event held in March by the National Society of Pershing Rifles Alumni Association (NSPRAA) honored Morgan graduates who retired as general officers in the U.S. military. beautiful island of Bermuda. On the first night, the group gathered for a cocktail reception, courtesy of the ship, the Enchantment of the Seas. The guests were all adorned in blue and orange and had a wonderful time getting to know one another. When the ship arrived in Bermuda, MSU Foundation Board Member Omar McIntosh, ’01, had made arrangements for the group to have a “Taste of Bermuda” reception at the Frog and Onion Pub on the island. Some Morgan alumni who lived in Bermuda joined the group at the reception, which was a great experience. At the end of the trip, all agreed to begin planning another cruise in 2014. Groove Phi Groove Celebrates 50th Anniversary

On Friday, Oct. 12, 1962, 14 young black American men convened a meeting in a conference room in Morgan’s Banneker Hall (now Cummings Hall) to establish Groove Phi Groove Social Fellowship, Inc. Nearly 50 years later, the organization continues to grow and find success in its primary mission, which is to educate and empower people — especially young black men — on college campuses and in communities across the U.S. Since 1962, many thousands of young men have joined the organization.

HBCU Choir to Kick Off Its Fifth Season

Closing Arguments Scheduled for HBCU Equity Case

Closing arguments in the case Coalition for Equity and Excellence in Maryland Higher Education, et al. v. Maryland Higher Education Commission, et al. are scheduled for the fall of this year. In summary, the Coalition argues

that Maryland’s Historically Black Institutions (HBIs) have a limited role and missions; that these institutions have been underfunded, which both prevents them from carrying out their current missions and prevents them from expanding their role and missions to be attractive to students regardless of race; and that their programs have been unnecessarily duplicated at other state institutions, an action which has rendered the HBIs more segregated now than they were in the 1970s. The Coalition filed its lawsuit in 2006 and has been assisted in its legal battle by the law firm Kirkland and Ellis of Washington, D.C., the Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, and others. The case went to trial in the United States District Court of Maryland in the first quarter of this year. Closing arguments are scheduled for Oct. 19, 2012 at 10:00 a.m., in Courtroom 7D. On Aug. 12, the chapter held its Annual Alumni “Summer Madness” event, at the home of Tony Horton, ’58, and his wife, Patricia, who live in Oreland, Pa., a suburb of Philadelphia. Morgan alumni and students reconnected over incredibly good backyard, picnic fare and enjoyed fun in the pool and updates on Morgan. The Philadelphia Chapter created this event several years ago to give its Morgan scholarship recipients and their parents an opportunity to meet each other and the members of the chapter.

Philadelphia Alumni Chapter Holds Successful Concert and Summer Event

Morgan President David Wilson was a guest at the Philadelphia Alumni Chapter’s annual MSU Choir Concert, held on April 29, 2012. During the intermission, Dr. Wilson spoke passionately about the need to support our students who have to leave their studies each semester, not because of failing grades but because they do not have the resources to continue their education. He praised the efforts of the Philadelphia Chapter in supporting its four scholarship recipients. The choir concert is the chapter’s signature fundraiser. Proceeds of the event are shared with the choir and the Francis Walker Foundation at Morgan, which supports the scholarship recipients from Philadelphia. The concert was held at Bethlehem Baptist Church of Spring House, Pa., where the Rev. Charles W. Quann is the Pastor. The

Alumni Awards and Class Reunion Luncheon. At the luncheon, classmates had a great time renewing acquaintances, socializing and reminiscing about the “good ole days” at Morgan. In reflecting on the event, Mabeline Julien spoke for herself and her husband, Victor, another member of the class: “Victor and I are still glowing from the unforgettably beautiful celebration of the Class of 1962’s 50th anniversary.” The class presented a check in the amount of $134,859.88 to the MSU Foundation, Inc., for student scholarships. On Saturday, May 19, 2012, the morning of Commencement, 23 members of the Class of 1962 led the procession into the stadium, adorned in their beautiful gold caps and gowns. This was the first time a 50th anniversary class wore gold. They looked very impressive. The entire weekend proved to be very motivating, fun-filled and uplifting.

Southern Maryland Alumni Hold Second Annual Picnic

The Morgan State University Southern Maryland Alumni Chapter (MSUSMAC) held its Second Annual Picnic on June 23, 2012. Before the picnic, there was a brief meeting that included the swearing in of new chapter officers by past Chapter President the Rev. George DeFord, ’67. Jacqueline L. Lawson, ’75, President of the MSU National Alumni Association (MSUNAA), and her husband, Art Lawson, ’74, D.C. Alumni Chapter President, were among the invited guests. President Lawson spoke to the gathering about alumni and MSUNAA’s work to support President David Wilson’s agenda for Morgan. Her presence also provided the opportunity for chapter members who do not attend MSUNAA Board of Directors Meetings to speak with

honored and were inducted into Morgan’s Public Health Alumni Chapter. Several of the graduates received Outstanding Scholar awards. Keynote speaker for the event was William C. (“Bill”) Jenkins, Ph.D., who served for two decades as Supervisory Epidemiologist for the National Center for HIV, STD, and TB Prevention at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Dr. Jenkins also managed the CDC’s Minority Health Activities Program.

Morgan’s Five Dollar Scholarship Fund is seeking donors to provide financial gifts, large and small, to support academically worthy students of the University. Introduced by Morgan President David Wilson during his inaugural address in October 2010, this ambitious initiative is now building a $5-million endowment fund to be managed by the MSU Foundation. This initial corpus will be augmented by ongoing public and private funding sources. “It is through education that we will empower successive generations of students and prepare them to be responsible citizens and dynamic leaders in their chosen professions,” said Dr. Wilson, who launched the Fund with a pledge of $100,000. President Wilson Visits the Baltimore County Chapter

Dr. David Wilson, President of Morgan State University, visited the Baltimore County Chapter of the MSU National Alumni Association on Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2012. The event, at the Milford Mill Dr. David Wilson Academy, 3800 Washington Ave., included the regular chapter meeting, a tour of the facility’s new renovations and a meet and greet with Dr. Wilson.

South Atlantic Alumni Chapter Installs New Officers

The South Atlantic Chapter of the Morgan State University Alumni Association installed new officers during its July 14, 2012 meeting in Orangeburg, S.C. New officers for 2012–2013 are Barbara Randall Clark, President; Herb Frazier-Rahim, Vice President, and Dianne Fulton, Secretary. Rosalyn Floyd remains the Chapter Treasurer, and Al Miller is the Immediate Past President. Mary Gilder, ’54, is the oldest member of the chapter.

Soon thereafter, on Saturday, July 21, D.C. Metropolitan Area students scheduled to graduate in 2016 were welcomed to a reception hosted by the D.C. Chapter. The students were energized by remarks from Gen. William “Kip” Ward, ’71, U.S. Army (Ret.) and his wife, Joyce Ward, ’73; Jacqueline Lawson, ’75, President of the MSU National Alumni Association; Douglas Gwynn, Morgan’s Director of Residential Life and Housing; and other alumni and current students. The chapter also held its 29th Annual Crab Feast fundraiser on Sunday, Aug. 5, 2012, at Martin’s West in Baltimore. Approximately 650 Morganites and their guests enjoyed a great afternoon of food and fun. This annual event raises needed scholarship funds for deserving Morgan students from the D.C. Metropolitan Area. The D.C. Chapter plans to host another alumni social this fall.

Howard L. Cornish Chapter Presents Academic Achievement Award

During the MSU 2012 graduation rehearsal in May 2012, the Howard L. Cornish Metropolitan Baltimore Alumni Chapter presented the Dr. Clayton C. Stansbury Graduating Senior Academic Achievement to Janqueshia Brienda Gay. Ms. Gay received her bachelor’s degree in sociology from Morgan’s College of Liberal Arts. She is planning to pursue her master’s degree in criminology and criminal justice at San Diego State University.

Charlotte Alumni Chapter to Be Chartered in October

The chartering of the Charlotte Alumni Chapter will take place at the Annual MSUNAA Homecoming Business meeting on Friday, Oct. 12, 2012 at 12:00 noon in the University Student Center Theater. The chapter meets on a regular basis and has recruited several members. The chapter will cover the areas of Salisbury, N.C., to Rock Hill, S.C. Much excitement is in the air! Morgan’s Vietnam Era Vets Club Members Reunite

It was an unfortunate circumstance that reunited several members of Morgan’s Vietnam Era Vets Club after 42 years. The club existed from 1967 until well into the 1970s. Several members of the club came together on March 1, 2012 to attend a memorial service for one of the organization’s dedicated founding charter members, Leonard T. Jackson, at the University Chapel. The eulogy was given by the Rev. Dr. Bernard Keels. The founding charter members were: Paul W. Brown, Jr. ’70; Harry C.R. Williams, III, ’70; Harry Braxton, ’71; Leonard Jackson, ’71; Donald Priester, ’71; Lawrence Worthington, ’71; David Y. Thomas,’72, a current Morgan Professor; Clyde (“Chuck”) Taylor (deceased); Ben Fuller, ’71, and Thomas Wilcox, ’72 (deceased). President Jenkins signed the charter in 1967, creating the Morgan State College Vietnam Era Vets Club. Other active members of the Vets Club included James Gillis, ’72; Neil Outing, ’85; Clarence (“Tiger”) Davis, ’68, and Norman Brailey, ’70 (deceased).

At its pinnacle, the club consisted of 250 duespaying members and a host of associate members. The club gave popular cabarets during Homecoming Weekends and chose Homecoming Queens, such as “Moms” Roberts, who had been a part of the Morgan Canteen staff for many years, and Dr. Iola R. Smith, a professor in Morgan’s education department. The Vets Club also led the first fundraising effort to launch Morgan’s radio station.

ALUMNI ON THE MOVE Raymond J. Ankrum, Sr., ’11, has been hired as the Director of the New Day Charter High School, in Newark, N.J. New Day is a tuition-free public school scheduled to open in September 2012 with 100 students in grades 9 through 12. Ankrum received his Master of Arts in teaching from Morgan and went on to earn a Master of Education degree in organizational leadership from Teachers College of Columbia University. Jenel Boston, ’04, is now co-anchor of the “Daybreak and Sunrise” morning news program on NBC-WKTV News Channel 2, in Utica, N.Y. Ms. Boston grew up in Prince George’s County, Md., and earned her Bachelor of Science degree in broadcast journalism from Morgan. Adrian E. Bracy, ’82, chief executive officer of the YWCA Metro St. Louis, in St. Louis, Mo., was one of the featured speakers for the April 2012 Master Class Series at St. Louis Community College – Forest Park. Bracy has more than 20 years of senior management finance experience with professional sports teams, including the St. Louis Rams, Arizona Cardinals and Miami Dolphins football teams. She has a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Morgan and an M.B.A. from Nova Southeastern University. Belinda M. Brown-Jackson, Ph.D., ’81, recipient of a Bachelor of Science degree in biology from Morgan, is now a research associate at the Uniformed Services University, in Bethesda, Md., where she is investigating the mechanisms and potential applications of induced antigen-specific immunological tolerance. Dr. Brown-Jackson earned her master’s degree in applied molecular biology from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County and her doctorate in biological sciences, also from UMBC, in 2010. Her research findings have been published in several scientific journals. The Right Rev. John R. Bryant, ’65, was honored for his 50 years in ministry during a special service at Bethel A.M.E. Church in Baltimore, Md., in March. The service, attended by hundreds, was a homecoming for the Rev. Bryant, who led Bethel’s congregation from 1975 until 1988, when he became a bishop. He now is senior bishop of the A.M.E. Church’s 4th Episcopal District. Armentha “Mike” Cruise, ’66, President and CEO of The Aspen Group Inc., was one of 25 persons recognized by the Washington Business Journal as 2012 Minority Business Leaders in the Washington Metropolitan Area. The Aspen Group is a staffing and work force management company. Cruise’s Morgan degree is a bachelor’s in psychology. She also has a master’s degree in human resources from American University.

Michael Cryor, ’68, gave the commencement address at Montclair State University in Montclair, N.J., and was granted an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters during the event, in May. Cryor, President of the business consulting firm The Cryor Group, LLC, earned his bachelor’s degree from Morgan and was the first African American to receive a master’s degree in psychology from Montclair. Recently, he was appointed Chair of the Board of Visitors of the University of Maryland School of Medicine and was elected to the Board of Directors of Baltimore Gas & Electric, an Exelon Corporation. Cryor is former Chair of the Maryland Democratic Party. Monroe Dennis, ’64, was elected to the College Park, Md., City Council in November 2011, representing District Two. Dennis is a native Marylander, having grown up and finished high school in Worcester County on the state’s Eastern Shore. After earning his Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics from Morgan, he was employed as a federal employee, served two years in the U.S. Army and was employed by IBM Corporation, from which he retired. He is now well into a second career as a Technical Support Representative with Pitney Bowes Software, Inc. Annette Mallory Donawa, Ph.D., ’09, holder of a doctorate in higher education and administration from Morgan, has been appointed Assistant Dean and Director for The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine’s Office of Continuing Medical Education. In addition to her Morgan degree, Dr. Donawa has a Master in Education from Northern Illinois University and a Bachelor of Science in mass communications from Towson University. Bryant E. Dooley, ’11, has been accepted to the first class of the Emerging Leaders Program at Year Up, an organization that seeks to provide urban young adults with “the skills, experience and support that will empower them to reach their potential through professional careers and higher education.” Dooley’s association with Year Up – Baltimore began with an internship in the organization’s Student Services Department, while he was earning his Bachelor of Science degree in social work from Morgan. During his senior year, he accepted his current position as Year Up Learning Community Leader. Sarah Davis Elias, ’75, has written her second book, “Provident Hospital: A Chronology of the Baltimore Hospital, 1894–1986.” Elias, who earned her master’s degree in history from Morgan State University and a master’s degree in education from The Johns Hopkins University, is a retired Baltimore City teacher, a former instructor at Coppin State University and a former lecturer and academic advisor at Morgan.

Darnell Fisher, ’03, former student-athlete at Morgan, is the National Society of Black Engineers’ (NSBE’s) National Alumni Extension Chair for 2012–13. In this position, he leads nearly 6,000 technical professionals around the world in fulfilling NSBE’s mission, which is “to increase the number of culturally responsible black engineers who excel academically, succeed professionally and positively impact the community.” Fisher, a nuclear engineer at the NAVSEA Norfolk Naval Shipyard, earned his bachelor’s degree from Morgan in electrical engineering and was a member of the University’s basketball team. Damon Freeman, Ph.D., ’90, ’96, has received the 2012 Excellence in Teaching Award for Standing Faculty at the University of Pennsylvania’s School of Policy & Practice (SP2). This is third straight year that he has been honored with the Teaching Award. Dr. Freeman, an Assistant Professor at Penn, earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in history from Morgan, a law degree from the University of Maryland School of Law and a Ph.D. in African-American history from Indiana University. Keith Humphrey, ’93, a Morgan computer science graduate is the National Society of Black Engineers’ (NSBE’s) National Alumni Extension ChairElect for 2012– 13. Humphrey is employed as a software engineer at McKesson-Relay Health. He will succeed Morgan graduate Darnell Fisher, ’03, as Chair in 2013–14. Cordell E. Hunter, Sr., ’69, ’75, has been appointed to the Board of Trustees of Harford Community College, in Maryland. Hunter is a retired educator and administrator for the Anne Arundel County (Md.) Public Schools and has served as a pastor in the African Methodist Episcopal Church since 1980. He has served his community in many other capacities, including commissioner of the Housing Authority of Havre de Grace, Md.; and state, regional and county branch officer of the NAACP. Hunter earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education and a master’s degree in educational administration and supervision from Morgan. Brenda Bowe Johnson, Ph.D., ’62 and ’81, has been elected to the Lyric Foundation Board of Directors. The foundation is associated with the Patricia and Arthur Modell Performing Arts Center at the Lyric, in Baltimore, Md. Dr. Johnson was also recently appointed to the Baltimore County Commission on Arts and Sciences, which reviews grants and proposals and provides funding to art, music, history and science organizations. She earned her Bachelor of Science degree in biology and her master’s degree in educational administration at Morgan.

Justin Jones-Fosu, ’06, has had his second book published: “Finding Your Glasses: Revealing and Achieving Authentic Success.” In addition to being an author, Jones-Fosu is a popular inspirational speaker, an entrepreneur and a weekly radio show host. He is the President/Chief Inspirational Officer of JUSTIN INSPIRES, a company driven to provide high-energy and practical inspirational speaking and workshops to participants around the world. Jones-Fosu earned his Bachelor of Science degree in marketing from Morgan and an M.B.A. from the University of Baltimore. The St. Mary’s County (Md.) Board of Education has appointed Charna Lacey, Ed.D., ’09, to the position of Diversity/Equity Specialist in the Office of the Superintendent. Dr. Lacey previously served as an Instructional Specialist for Minority Achievement and Multicultural Education with Charles County Public Schools and as a teacher at Bladensburg High School in Bladensburg, Md. Her educational doctorate is from Morgan. Bernadette Lewis, ’76, Community and Cultural Relations Director at Southern Maryland Electric Cooperative, has been appointed to the five-person ethics panel of the St. Mary’s County Board of Education. She will serve a three-year term. Lewis, from Leonardtown, Md., earned her Bachelor of Science degree in home economics from Morgan. Bonnie Logan, ’72, joined the Classic Five Hole in One Club by sinking a hole in one at the Forest Park Golf Course in Baltimore, Md., in August 2011. She accomplished the feat with a 5 iron on the course’s 160-yard 13th hole. Logan retired from the Baltimore City Public Schools in 2007, after a 32-year career as a Physical Education Teacher and a coach. Deborah L. McIver, ’80, has been promoted to Regional Vice President for ACN, a direct seller of telecommunications equipment and essential services for homes and businesses. McIver and her daughter, Jennifer, became the first mother-daughter team in ACN’s history to reach the executive level of RVP. This position will expand McIver’s ability to assist ACN Independent Business Owners. The company operates in 23 countries on four continents. Janese Murray, ’78, has been named Vice President of Diversity and Inclusion for Exelon Corporation. She previously served as the Executive Director of Talent Development and Inclusion for Constellation Energy. Murray grew up in New Jersey and earned her bachelor’s degree in speech communication from Morgan. She serves on the boards of directors of Associated Black Charities and the YMCA of Central Maryland.

MSU history graduate Keith B. Owens, ’78, has been appointed Assistant Chief of Maryland Occupational Safety and Health Compliance, in the State of Maryland’s Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation. BA Parker, ’07, graduated with honors from Columbia University this past May with a master’s degree in film. Among her other notable accomplishments, Parker wrote a script that was presented in the 2012 Columbia University Film Festival and served an internship last year with Comedy Central, working with Jon Stewart and Steve Colbert. She earned her undergraduate degree from Morgan in English. Tenyo Pearl, ’93, has been honored as one of Maryland’s Top 100 Women for 2012 by The Daily Record. Pearl, Campus Director for the Nonprofit Leadership Alliance and Adjunct Professor at Coppin State University, earned her bachelor’s degree in psychology from Morgan. She has more than 15 years of nonprofit experience in leadership and service capacities and is a sought-after speaker, facilitator, trainer and panelist on the topic of the plight of women and children. Ramona Henderson Pearson,’75, has been honored as a 2012 Michigan Chronicle Woman of Excellence. Pearson, Founder and President of Ramona Henderson Pearson, CPA, PC and the Pearson Group, LLC, was one of 50 African-American businesswomen recognized by Michigan’s oldest African-American newspaper this year. She was selected to receive the award because of her promotion of economic empowerment, support of religious and educational institutions, advocacy of civic and community involvement, and extensive board service. She earned her B.A. in business administration from Morgan, summa cum laude, and an M.B.A. from the University of Detroit. Former Morgan State track and field athlete Allison Randall, ’11, represented Jamaica in the 2012 Olympic Games, in the discus. She reached this lofty goal at the Jamaica Amateur Athletic Association National Senior Trials, in June. Earlier, in March, she set a Jamaican national record with a throw of 61.21 meters. Randall, who also holds the MSU record in the discus, earned her Bachelor of Science degree in physical education from Morgan. The Rev. Dr. Albert Prince Rowe, ’58, Pastor of Calvary Baptist ChurchinPaterson, N.J., was honored with a commemorative stamp by the U.S. Postal Service, in February, for his distinguished service and achievements. Dr. Rowe was also inducted into the prestigious Martin Luther King Jr. Board of Preachers at MorehouseCollege,inApril.Aformerathlete, he was Captain of Morgan’s football and wrestling teams and was CIAA Wrestling Champion. He has served at Mt. Calvary since 1968.

Ruthe T. Sheffey, Ph.D., ’47, recently retired Professor of English at Morgan, was honored by Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley and First Lady Katie O’Malley at the 2012 Black History Month reception in February, at the Government House in Annapolis. Dr. Sheffey, who still teaches a graduate course in MSU’s English Department, has been a pace-setting scholar in fields ranging from Shakespearian literature to feminism to the work of Zora Neale Hurston, and has been a major, positive influence on her students at Morgan for more than 50 years. She earned her bachelor’s degree in English from Morgan and went on to earn her master’s and doctorate in English from Howard University and the University of Pennsylvania, respectively. Ashley Warrick, ’05, an audit manager for the top 20 national CPA firm Reznick Group, has been appointed to the Board of Directors of Goodwill Industries of the Chesapeake, Inc. Warrick graduated magna cum laude from Morgan’s Earl G. Graves School of Business and Management with a Bachelor of Science degree in accounting. She began her professional career in 2005 as an audit associate for Reznick Group. Warrick says she sought out the position with Goodwill Industries as “a way to give back to my community.” Angela L. Williams, Ph.D., ’12, Founder and President of Angela’s Circle of Sisters, LLC, has established a Book Scholarship for Foster Care Students who are aging out of the foster care system. The scholarships are awarded to foster care students who attend Bowie State University. Angela’s Circle of Sisters, based in Columbia, Md., is an educational outreach organization that assists young women who are in secondary or postsecondary education and are in the foster care system or have aged out. Dr. Williams received her doctorate in higher education administration from Morgan this year. Jan L. Williams, Ph.D., ’06, has been promoted to Associate Professor of Accounting, with tenure, at the University of Baltimore’s Merrick School of Business. Dr. Williams, one of only 194 AfricanAmerican accounting professors in business schools in the U.S., was a participant in the Ph.D. Project, which recruits minority professionals from business into doctoral programs in all business disciplines. She earned her doctorate in business administration with a specialization in accounting from Morgan’s Earl G. Graves School of Business and Management and was the first person to be awarded a Ph.D. by the school.

HBCU Choir to Kick Off Its Fifth Season

The 105 Voices of History National Choir will celebrate its fifth year season opening on Friday, Sept. 21, 2012, at 7:00 p.m., with a concert at the Andrew W. Mellon Auditorium in Washington, D.C. Wintley Phipps will serve as host, and Tramaine Hawkins will be guest artist of the event, which is titled “Constitution Avenue Red Carpet Leadership Salute.” The 105 Voices of History National Choir is made up of one student from each of 105 Historically Black Colleges and Universities, including Morgan State University. The choir’s 2012–13 season also includes a performance at Howard University’s Blackburn Center, on Saturday, Sept. 22, 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., during HBCU Fitness Day; a concert at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C., on Feb. 17, 2013; and a performance at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, Tenn., in May 2013.
