PRESIDENT’SMESSAGE
HARLOW FULLWOOD, JR.TO RECEIVE HONORARY ALUMNUS AWARD
he entire Morgan family is saddened by the loss of Senator Clarence Blount. We are disappointed since we were already planning to honor him in life for his great deeds and steadfast commitment to the community and to Morgan. As President Richardson said, “Morgan and Maryland are better because of him.” As most of the MORGAN Family should know by now, we are in the midst of our very first Capital Campaign. The theme is: “New Horizons - The Campaign for Morgan State University.” Currently, this is our most important initiative. With your help, we will be able to increase scholarship awards, enhance educational program offerings, and improve the learning environment through facility construction, repairs and renovations. Public institutions only subsist on state appropriations; they thrive and excel with the financial support of alumni and friends. Here at MORGAN, we are poised to rise to another level of excellence and opportunity. We would implore ALL alumni to support this endeavor. While we seek your financial support, we also want to encourage verbal support. Our story needs to be told. Who better to tell it than MORGAN alumni? I share this information with great pride, but I must confess to an ulterior motive. I always recruit future and lost alumni. I cannot stress enough how this bodes well for the future of our beloved MORGAN.
he MSU National Alumni Association, Inc. is proud to recognize Harlow Fullwood, Jr. as the Honorary Alumnus for 2003. The Open House capped a nearly year long, $1.1 million renovation of Turner Armory, located at Hillen Road and Argonne Drive at the southwestern edge of Morgan’s campus. Once the home of a U.S. Army Reserve unit, the armory is being purchased from the city of Baltimore to house Morgan’s ROTC unit. Morgan’s Bear Battalion, under the leadership of Lt. Col. Donald Harrison, was recently honored with the prestigious Gen. Douglass MacArthur Award, ranking it the top ROTC unit in the country.

MORGAN STATE WHITNEY YOUNG CLASSIC The Morgan State University Bears are embarking upon a return to tradition for the 2003 football season. MSU is returning to the Whitney M. Young Classic to take on the Hampton University Pirates at the Meadowlands Sports Complex in East Rutherford, NJ. This year’s Classic will take place on Saturday, September 27, 2003 at 5:00 p.m. The Whitney M. Young Classic is one of the more fabled Black College Classics in the nation. Morgan State and Grambling State University played in this annual showdown throughout the 60’s & 70’s. Some of the earlier games were played in historic “Yankee Stadium,” and drew some of the biggest crowds in the nation. Morgan State hasn’t played in the Classic since 1983 when they suffered a 33-0 setback to Grambling. Morgan State is anxiously awaiting a return to the Classic. Head Coach Don Hill says, “This represents a return to tradition. We are pleased to bring that tradition back to Morgan fans, and the extensive Alumni base in the New York metropolitan area. Morgan State and Hampton University are strong rivals, and the renewal of the MSU/HU rivalry in this setting should be a win-win for all parties.”
– Alumni House Update – The Alumni House is still under renovation. The proposed timeframe for staff to move back in is by the end of June.

SECOND ANNUAL SCHOLARSHIP LUNCHEON he Second Annual Scholarship Luncheon was held on April 10th, in the McKeldin Center. This luncheon gives our scholarship donors a chance to get to know the students who are the recipients of their generosity. The donors all say that it is very gratifying to meet the students who benefit from their contributions. The students enjoy having the opportunity to meet and thank their benefactors in person. This event provides an excellent opportunity for our students to network with potential employers. The luncheon also presents another opportunity for Morgan’s leadership to thank our major donors.

This year’s luncheon, which was underwritten by Merrill Lynch, was attended by almost two hundred donors and students, nearly double last year’s attendance. All of the donors present gave scholarships of at least $1,000 in this academic year. The increase in participants means that we had more scholarships this year at that level. This is extremely important in light of the decreased government funding for student financial assistance and the increasing tuition costs. We hope to have many more participants at next year’s luncheon.

The ceremony was hosted by U.S. Black Engineer & Information Technology magazine, the Council of Engineering Deans of the Historically Black Colleges and Universities and the Lockheed Martin Corporation. The Black Engineer of the Year Awards and Conference is held each year to honor modern-day black inventors, technical innovators, gifted scientists, budding engineers and high-level managers with successful careers in private industry, academia, government agencies and the military. The conference is a national event that brings together students, college administrators, recruiters, engineering and IT professionals, and highlevel decision-makers from the corporate, government and military communities.
