2005 Alumnus of the Year Colonel (Ret.) James Stanley White Morgan State University is honored to recognize Colonel James S.White, a graduate of what was then Morgan State College, class of 1954, as the 2005 Alumnus of the Year. Col. White received a Bachelor of Science degree in health, physical education and recreation. As a student, he was the president of his freshman and sophomore classes, a member of the football team, a company commander in ROTC, and a student worker in the Soper Library. olonel James White, class of 1954 is a life member of the Morgan State University National Alumni Association (MSUNAA); a member of the Varsity M Club; a member of the Philadelphia Chapter of MSUNAA, and a life member of the Philadelphia Chapter of the Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.

Among his numerous awards, Col. White is the recipient of the 1988 Special Achievement Award of the MSUNAA. He is the 1984 recipient of the Distinguished Alumnus Award of the Philadelphia Chapter, MSUNAA, and he was inducted into the MSU ROTC Hall of Fame in 2002. Colonel (Ret.) James Stanley White

Col. Whites’ philanthropy is as elaborate as his recipient awards list. He offers his time and financial support to many. The Morgan State University Foundation, the Varsity M Club Scholarship Fund; the Kappa Alpha Psi Foundation, the Boulé Foundation, and the MSUNAA are recipients of his financial support. He is a member of MSU’s Promethean Society and the 1867 Club. He and his wife, Juanita A. Pelzer White (Class of 1955), have established the “Juanita A. Pelzer White Scholarship Fund” to provide financial assistance to MSU students. After graduating from Morgan, Col. White continued his educational journey, earning a Master of Science degree in international affairs from George Washington University, Washington, D.C. He is a Distinguished Graduate of the National War College,

Washington, D. C., a graduate of the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College, Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. Col. White has experienced a successful leadership career, which includes executive positions in business, government, higher education, and the military. As a highly decorated veteran of the Vietnam War, Col. White served 23 years as a commissioned officer, retiring in 1977. During his long career, he was awarded 25 military awards and decorations. He received three awards for the Legion of Merit with two Oak Leaf Clusters, four Bronze Star Medal awards with “V” and three Oak Leaf Clusters, and the Meritorious Service Medal. Upon retiring from the United States Army, Col. White began his career in government, serving 14 years in various appointed executive positions in the Philadelphia, Pennsylvania municipal government. In July 1985, after serving only 19 months as Commissioner of the Department of Licenses and Inspections, Mayor W. Wilson Goode, also a Morgan graduate class of 1961, selected him to be the City managing director, the highest appointed position in Philadelphia government. In the business arena, Col. White was vice president of Provident National Bank of Philadelphia. He is currently a member of the board of directors of The Philadelphia Tribune, the nation’s oldest African American newspaper.

Dear Alumni: It is a pleasure to greet you as I begin my term as national president of the alumni association. Thank you all who have helped me to make a wonderful transition into this office. My thanks go to our former president, Steven O. Russell, Esq. for all his help and advice. Mrs. Joyce Brown, director of Alumni Relations, is also to be commended for all the help she and her office have given me. When alumni need help, do not fail to contact our Alumni Relations Office. As many of you are aware, we have a beautiful new Alumni House. It is a state-of-the-art building! Please make every effort to see it on your next visit to the campus. Under the 20 years of leadership of Dr. Earl S. Richardson, Morgan State University has grown and prospered academically, culturally and in the development of a first rate campus.

MSUNAA 2005 Chapter of the Year Howard County Alumni Chapter

The Howard County Chapter (HCC) of the Morgan State University National Alumni Association (MSUNAA) was organized in March of 1987, and was chartered in May of 1989. The HCC Constitution and Bylaws lists as objectives, among others: to provide financial support to the University; to encourage promising high school students to select Morgan for post secondary education; and to extend and strengthen relations among MSU alumni. CC activities and initiatives are driven by the objectives set out in our bylaws and the theme “Let’s Give Something Back.” To meet our objective of encouraging enrollment at MSU, the HCC sponsors a number of annual fund-raising events. Profits from these events are used to award scholarships to Howard County high school graduates who choose to become MSU students.

Aside from financial support, HCC is always well represented at the annual MSU Gala, and the MSUNAA Alumni Day Award & Class Reunion Luncheon. HCC members, over the years, have held official positions on the board of the MSUNAA. HCC members provide representation at the annual Maryland General Assembly sessions in support of legislative bills and budget hearings, in hopes of advancing the mission of MSU.

The HCC fundraising events are legendary in the county. Each year, the popular “Oldies but Goodies” dance and the “HCC Night at Toby’s Dinner Theater” are well attended. These affairs enable HCC to award several scholarships of up to $1000.00 each, to several students on an annual basis. Scholarships for the year 2005-2006 will be presented at the June 2005 general meeting.
The chapter has also established a scholarship plan through the MSU Foundation for awarding scholarship funds to Howard County students. In the spirit of providing financial support to the University, many members of the chapter have contributed substantially to the Foundation.

In the past, HCC conducted a successful “Life Membership” campaign. That campaign led to approximately 97% of the HCC membership becoming life members. In written comments to the MSUNAA, the HCC Chapter noted,“As we focus on our objective to strengthen relations among MSU Alumni, we have a goal to increase the HCC membership. We envision growing our membership, enhancing our fund-raising and scholarship activities, and therefore positioning HCC, and members, for additional success stories in the years ahead.”
Morgan Alumni Honored At 2005 NAFEO Conference
hree Morgan State University alumni, including a Maryland state delegate, were honored at the 30th Annual Conference of the National Association for Equal Opportunity in Higher Education. The conference was held at the Wardman Park Marriott Hotel in Washington, D.C. on April 23rd. Each year, member institutions are given the opportunity to select alumni to be recog-

nized by NAFEO. Those selected have had distinguished careers and have been major supporters of their alma mater. The MSU honorees this year are: The Honorable Clarence Davis, ’68 and ’70, MD state delegate, William G. Contee, Jr., ’50, (posthumously) and Mrs. Genester Nix Miller, ’49. The honorees were presented with NAFEO’s 2005 Distinguished Alumni Citation.
MD Governor Salutes Morgan Grad Students in Annapolis n February 20th, members of the Morgan State Graduate Student Association (MSGSA), Kurtis Watkins, Muriel Dow and Ramisi Chaka were saluted by the Governor of Maryland, Robert L. Ehrlich and Lieutenant Governor, Michael S. Steele, the first African American elected to statewide office.
O Lt. General William “Kip” Ward, Deputy Commanding General, U.S. Army Europe & 7th Army
Lt. General William “Kip” Ward Becomes U.S. Army’s Highest Ranking Black Officer t. Gen. William “Kip”Ward, class of 1971, was recently appointed to lead U.S. security efforts in the Middle East. He will also work on Middle East security issues with Egypt and Jordan. Ward’s responsibilities will include helping the Palestinians train and equip their security forces. Among his duties, he will be monitoring compliance with Israeli and Palestinian security agreements. Lt. General Ward is a product of Morgan’s Bear Battalion ROTC program, which produces more African-American general officers than any other university program outside of West Point. He was commissioned into the Infantry in 1971.

His military education includes the Infantry Officer Basic and Advanced courses, U.S. Army Command and General Staff College, and U.S. Army War College. He holds a Master of Arts degree in political science from Pennsylvania State University and a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science from Morgan State University. His military service has included overseas tours in Korea, Egypt, Somalia, Bosnia, two tours in Germany, and a wide variety of assignments in the United States, including Alaska and Hawaii.

Gloria Wayman Named MSUNAA First Vice President loria Wayman, class of 1990, has been appointed as first vice president of the MSU National Alumni Association. Wayman has distinguished herself as an avid and willing worker for the Association. She is a member of the Howard L. Cornish Chapter and previously served as president of the chapter.

Wayman, a member of the MSUNAA’s Board of Directors, says she became active in alumni affairs, because,“As a former student, I know firsthand how difficult it was to raise money for tuition every year. Many of Morgan’s former students know about those years when the financial requirements were a challenge. Well, I feel that we all should give something back.”
The students were congratulated on aiding Congressional Black Caucus members and Maryland State Delegate Clarence “Tiger” Davis in the organization of the 5th Annual Buffalo Soldiers Memorial Banquet in Annapolis, MD. Watkins, an aspiring artist, designed advertisements and assisted with marketing the event with Dow who raised nearly $15,000 in sponsorships. Chaka chaired the college and high school student essay contest, which gave away scholarships of $450, $350 and $200 to winners. Wayman said her work is geared toward raising the amount of scholarship aid available to needy students.“No student who wants to come to Morgan should be turned away because of the lack of money. If there are young people who want to be educated, we should be working to make sure there are funds for them.” “Also, it’s disheartening to hear of students who have to drop out of school because they don’t have the funds. That should never happen. I appeal to Morgan alumni everywhere to get involved with your local chapters and the national association. There are enough MSU alumni out there to guarantee money for any youngster who needs financial assistance,” she said.

Rev. Clarence A. Hawkins, ’61 has been recognized by African American Pride Magazine, Eastern Shore, Maryland, September/October 2004 issue as an Outstanding Achiever. Rev. Hawkins is a member of the Maryland State Board of Education, former pastor, school principal and Kent County Commissioner. Governor Robert Erhlich appointed him to a four-year term on the State Board in 2001.
Barbara Randall Clark, ’59 has published her 9th book entitled, “Soul”. It is a collection of 237 poetic writings, which includes many new selections, spanning twenty-five years. Cheryl Blackwell Bryson, ’72 was named the recipient of the YWCA of Metropolitan Chicago Board of Directors’ 2004 Leader Luncheon Outstanding Achievement Award in Professions. It is one of the area’s most prestigious salutes to outstanding women and the YWCA’s largest annual fundraiser. Vanessa Craddock, ’75 announces her debut novel, The Promise Box, that weaves in the local flavor of familiar Baltimore surroundings. Terry Edmonds, ’73 formerly President William J. Clinton's chief domestic speechwriter and most recently employed at AARP, has accepted a job at Time-Warner headquarters in Manhattan, N.Y. as chief speechwriter to Richard Parsons, the company's Afro-American chairman, president and chief Executive Officer. Sara Davis Elias, ’75 has written a book called “Recalling Longview,” an account of the Longview, Texas race riot that occurred in July 1919. Dr. Charles Fletcher, ’50 recently received the Gold Medal for Technology Innovation at Delaware State University from the Computerworld Honors Program. Warwick Hill, ’49 has penned “Before Us Lies the Timber – The Segregated High School of Montgomery County, Maryland, 1927-1960.” The writing compiles the detailed highlights of 30 graduating classes, offering an invaluable historical record. Alicia B. Harvey-Smith, Ph.D., ’84 is the Dean of Learning and Student Development at the Community College of Baltimore County, Catonsville Campus. She recently published a chapter entitled: “Growing Learning Communities at The Community College: Two Decades of First-Year Student Development Efforts, Appearing in Integrating The First Year Experience: The Role of First-Year Seminars in Learning Communities,” edited by Jean Henscheiddr. Dr. Smith recently served as lead writer and editor of: The Seventh Learning College Principle: A Framework For Transforming Learning Organizations - A book based on her dissertation research for The National Association of Student Personnel Administrators. Vincent O. Leggett, ’75 was appointed and commissioned to Admiral of the Chesapeake Bay. This award is the highest honor that a Maryland Governor can bestow upon a private individual in the environmental field. Mr. Leggett’s Chesapeake focus is prominent in both his employment and in his work for his nonprofit organization. He is employed as a Special Projects Coordinator in the Office of Education, and Bay Policy and Growth Management at the Maryland Department of Natural Resources. Rev. Archie LeMone, ’62 has been named the first black president of the Crozer Theological Seminary Board. The Crozer Theological Seminary is located in Rochester, NY and is part of the Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School. Theresa Marable, ’99 owner of No Limit Communications, just celebrated her 5th year in business. She provides cell phones and registers
new customers for service plans with major cell phone service companies. Her very successful business is located at 3330 Greenmount Ave., Baltimore, MD. Lonnie Morris, ’97 is the vice President for Enrollment Services at Holy Names University in Oakland, CA. Dr. Carole G. Parker, ’72 recently joined the faculty of Seton Hill University located in Greenburg, PA. as an associate professor of business. She has 17 years of experience as a professor. Dr. Parker travels extensively, and has spent time teaching in the International MBA program at the University of Thai Chapter of Commerce in Bangkok, Thailand. Donald W. Smith, ’83 Major US Army Retired, is currently an officer with the U.S. Capitol Police First Responders. He is also an officer with the African American Patriots Consortium, American Legion Post 249, Ninth and Tenth Horse Calvary Association and The 555th Triple Nickel Association. Stephanie Smith, ’97 is working towards earning her PhD in Organizational Management. She penned a book Finding Work you Love: When You Don’t Know Which Way to Go – A Guide for Twentysomethings. Turner, ’93 is President and Co-founder of Colt Express Logistics, Inc. Colt Express began operations in March of 1988. The full-service transportation company is headquartered in Wethersfield, CT with branches in Ellington, CT. and Hanover, Maryland. Since the company’s inception, it has serviced over 120,000 customers throughout New England, New York, Maryland and Delaware. Donyue is listed in the 2005/2006 edition of The National Registers Who’s Who in Executives, Professionals and Leading Businesses. The edition is registered in the Library of Congress in Washington, DC. Adona Wimberly, ’91 is employed at Trinity University, located in Washington, DC as an Assistant Professor of Psychology. She received her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Howard University in May 2004. Calvin E. Woodland, ’65 Vice President for student services at Bergen Community College in Paramus, N.J. is expected to assume the position of President of Capital Community College in Hartford, Connecticut in March.
