Alumni Day 2006 Promises to be Special

Alumnus of the Year

This year’s Alumni Day celebration, to be held on Saturday, May 20, promises to be special. Those who attend will be the first to christen the new Student Center that will formally open this spring. It will be fun to compare the new center with the old student union building that many of you remember. The day gets off to a good start at 9:30 a.m. in the Murphy Fine Arts Center, Recital Hall during the annual business meeting where MSU President, Dr. Earl S. Richardson, will address the alumni. Dr. Richardson will impart his special perspective on news and affairs about the university. The 66th Annual Awards & Class Reunion Luncheon begins at 12:00p.m., with a reception followed by the luncheon at 1:00 p.m. in the New Student Center. The Class of 1956 will be celebrating its 50th anniversary and all other classes ending in “1” and “6” will receive special recognition during the luncheon.

Lawrence Phillip Johnson Lawrence "Phil" Johnson (’73)

A STAUNCH UNIVERSITY SUPPORTER AND OUTSTANDING ALUMNI VOLUNTEER Lawrence "Phil" Johnson (’73), a mathematics major who was a member of the esteemed MSU Choir and the ROTC program, has become one of the true supporters of MSU and the National Alumni Association. In recognition of Mr. Johnson's public service, personal and professional achievements, financial support, community service, and demonstrated leadership ability, the Morgan State University National Alumni Association has named him the Alumnus-of-the-Year for 2006. Mr. Johnson is a long-time member of the Howard County Alumni Chapter. In the early 1990s, he co-chaired the Chapter's College Bound Program that lead to a partnership between the Howard County Board of Education and MSU. From this union, 23 students received assignments to practice teach in the county. After graduating, 13 of the students were hired as full-time Howard County teachers. A tireless worker for MSU, Mr. Johnson served as a recruiter for the Office of Undergraduate Admissions and Recruitment in the Howard County area.

Mr. Johnson said,“I appreciate being selected as this year’s top alumnus but it has been an honor for me to serve the university and the alumni office. I am pleased that I can lend my support to Morgan. The administration is working hard and you can see that from the new construction on campus and the financial support coming to the school.” “All of my life, I have been taught by my parents, Ernest and Mary Johnson, to serve and give support when and where I can. Whether it is financial support or serving as an advocate for the university, I am willing to do what I can when they call on me. It’s nice to be honored by your alma mater,” he said. For 13 years, Mr. Johnson held the position of financial secretary for the MSUNAA. During his tenure, he managed more than $1,000,000 in income that provided scholarships and other financial support to the university. Mr. Johnson is also credited with overseeing the work, which assisted the National Alumni Association through two successful audits.

SPECIAL ACHIEVEMENT AWARD Diane McPhail is 2006 Honoree Devoting her life to Caring and Service

Diane McPhail (’77), graduated Cum Laude with a MSU Bachelor’s degree in social work. “I work for Morgan because it’s my way of giving other people the opportunities that were available to me.”

Diane McPhail (’77), graduated Cum Laude with a Bachelor's degree in social work. Since receiving the degree, she has devoted her life to medical social work, caring for the physically and mentally ill, homeless and elderly. Having worked in Maryland, Florida, and North Carolina, her primary goal has been to provide her patients with services that enhance their ability to be cared for in their own homes, or to place them in facilities that can provide the best medical care for their needs. Despite this intense, challenging career, McPhail has found time to become one of Morgan’s most dedicated alumni. She has proudly served as Co-Chairperson of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship Breakfast for the past 16 years. This event has generated over

$500,000 in scholarship funding and awarded 60 laptop computers to deserving Morgan students. McPhail said,“It has been a pleasure to serve in this capacity because when I was a student, scholarship assistance and financial aid allowed me to obtain my degree.” McPhail has been a member of the MSUNAA for the past 18 years, and an active member of the Howard L. Cornish Metropolitan Baltimore Chapter. “I work for Morgan because it’s my way of giving other people the opportunities that were available to me. I was really surprised when I was told that I received this award. I am quite humbled and overwhelmed. I have to smile each time someone mentions the award to me. It is really an appreciated honor,” she said.

CHAPTER OF THE YEAR Washington, D.C. Area Alumni Chapter is Number One W. Blye, two of the original members, are still active.

Each year, the MSU National Alumni Association evaluates the work of its chapters and decides which has made the greatest contribution toward the support of the Association and the university. For 2006, the Chapter of the Year Award goes to the Washington, DC Metropolitan Area Alumni Chapter. Charles Pollard (’57), who is serving his second term as president of the D.C. metropolitan chapter, said he can sum up the success of the group in one word—“dedication.” “We have dedicated members who started this chapter some years ago and are still active. We are not a very large group but we work diligently to support Morgan and the alumni association. Our members don’t work for personal gain, we work because we want Morgan to be successful,” Mr. Pollard said. Twelve enthusiastic local graduates established the Washington-area chapter in 1947. In 2005, the chapter established a $10,000 scholarship fund in the name of one of its chartered members, Mrs.Vestah W. Blye. Since the establishment of the fund, the chapter has contributed over $20,000 to the Morgan State University Foundation, Inc. to finance scholarships for worthy students from the Washington, DC metropolitan area. Each year the chapter provides three to five scholarships for area students to attend Morgan. Each scholarship recipient is required to volunteer in the Office of Alumni Relations. The chapter has supported the university and the National Alumni Association by making contributions to the Alumni Day Awards Luncheon, Homecoming activities, the annual Homecoming Gala, the Morgan Choir, and the Morgan Parents Club. Two of the chapter’s premier events are its Annual Crab Feast and the Morgan Choir Concert. The profits from both of these events are for the benefit of the scholarship fund. The Chapter has 155 registered dues paying members and numerous Life Members in the National Alumni Association. Eight members became Life Members in 2005.

Morgan in Your Community: Alumni Recruitment There is something exciting happening at Morgan State University. The growing interest in Morgan is reflected in the large numbers of applications received daily. Thanks to alumni like you, more students are becoming aware of the great pride and legacy that Morgan has to offer, but help is still needed to continue the growth of Maryland’s Public Urban University. Alumni chapters are encouraged to arrange campus tours for prospects in their area.

This is a great way to establish contact with parents and potential students in your area, and to promote the activities of your chapter to the surrounding community. An ideal candidate for admission has at least a 2.0 GPA and a combined Critical Reading & Math SAT Score of 850. On-thespot admission decisions are available every Wednesday until 7:00 p.m. Any incomplete application will be returned to the applicant.

Students who have submitted a completed application portfolio by November 15 will be notified no later than February 15 with an admission decision. Application portfolios received after February 15 will be notified no later than April 15. Students interested in applying to Morgan may apply online, at www.morgan.edu.

A l u m n i Dr. Harold L. Aubrey, ’92, has recently been appointed Assistant Provost for Institutional Effectiveness at Bowie State University. In the position, he is responsible for the university’s planning, institutional research and assessment areas. In addition, Dr. Aubrey has associate professorial rank in the College of Education. Terese Brown, ’03, is currently enrolled in the third year of Law School at the University of Maryland, Baltimore, Maryland. Reverend Dr. Delores Carpenter, ’66, recently celebrated her 20th anniversary as the pastor of Michigan Park Christian Church, which is located in Washington, DC. Dr. Carpenter is the first woman senior pastor of the 110-year old church. In addition to her duties as pastor, Dr. Carpenter is also a professor of religious education at Howard University School of Divinity.

Grice, ’90, is a senior editor and writer for Fox Sports Net of New England, Boston, MA. Mr. Grice covers the Boston Celtics basketball team and has received his third Emmy Award from The National

J. Terry Edmonds, ’73, recently accepted a position as chief speechwriter for Richard Parsons, President and Chief Executive Officer for Time Warner. Mr. Edmonds was chief domestic speechwriter for former President Bill Clinton. Edmonds was the first African American to serve in this position. Phillip L. Gilliam, ’81, inventor of the Bodyguard products and President of Antibody Inc. has received a U.S. Patent No.

Vincent O. Leggett, ’75, works as a special project coordinator in the Department of Natural Resources Office of Education, Chesapeake Bay Policy and Growth Management, Anne Arundel County, Maryland and serves as president of the Blacks of Chesapeake Foundation, Inc. Dr. Brenda Evans A. Lorick, ’68, joined the faculty of Morgan State University, College of Liberal Arts, as Interim Assistant Dean. She comes to Morgan after recently serving at Howard Community College.

Nancy K. Carpenter, ’83, was recently promoted in July 2005 to Community Mitigation Branch Chief of the Mitigation Division in Region 3 Office of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), part of the Department of Homeland Security. Kevin Darby, ’03, served as a Screenwriting Consultant for the Disney motion picture “Music High.” The movie is now in production with locations in Baltimore and will soon be distributed by Disney.

Jan Leftridge, ’69, is senior director for business diversity at the Harrisburg Regional Chamber of Commerce. In this position, the new director has used creativity and energy to ensure that area businesses gain the benefits from diversity. In her first year, Leftridge met with 80 companies and sponsored a 4-part seminar on small business development. Through her efforts, larger companies are assisting minority and women-owned firms in becoming more successful.

Academy of Television Arts and Sciences for his work on “The Legend of Red,” a sports documentary on former Boston Celtic’s coach Arnold “Red”Auerbach. Melvin Jackson, II, ’96, has recently taken the position of Fulfillment (Training) Field Representative with the Whitney Education Group, Inc., in Florida. The company provides advanced real estate, business development, financial investment, and asset protection training to students around the globe. In his new job, he will work closely with classroom instructors and personal mentors/investors. He will also contribute to their newsletter and write feature articles on some of the successful students of the company.

Benjamin F. Mason, ’58, trustee of Bon Secours Baltimore Health System and Executive Vice President of Plexus/Com Group was elected as board chair of the Maryland Hospital Association (MHA). Mason previously served as the first vice chair and secretary of MHA’s Executive Committee and Board, and the MHA Budget and Pension Committees. DeQuincy McRae, Jr., ’88, has recently been promoted to Director of Crew Planning for Amtrak. He is responsible for the system wide scheduling process for Amtrak Train and Engine employees, Mr. McRae has been with Amtrak for 16 years. Johnathan Nelson, (Attended ), won “Song of the Year” for his song “I’m Healed” at the 21st Annual Stellar Gospel Music Awards. He performs with the singing group, Johnathan Nelson and the Purpose.

Dr. Karen Olson, ’72, recently celebrated the publication of “Wives of Steel: Voices of Women in the Sparrows Point Steelmaking Communities,” a history of black and white women married to steelworkers at the Sparrows Point steel mill. Margaret D. Pagan, ’63, employed at Social Security Administration, has recently published her first book titled “More Than a Slave: The life of Katherine Ferguson (2003).” In addition, she is the author of Stories from Peggy’s Trunk (2002). Jacob Panikar, AIA, ’95, has been promoted to Senior Associate at CSD, an architecture and interior design firm headquartered in Baltimore, with offices in Dallas, Texas. Panikar, who holds a master of architecture degree from MSU, is credited with designing the new Higher Education Building at Chesapeake College in Wye Mills, MD. He also designed a retirement community in Westminster, MD. Dr. Shinette Sirmans–McRae, ’91, has been recently promoted to Lead Hospitalist at Lourdes Medical Center in Burlington County. Dr. Sirmans-McRae is responsible for in-patient care for the 300-bed facility in addiction. She is also responsible for the center’s addictive medicine department. Aisha Oliver-Staley, Esquire, ’02, is currently working at the McKenna, Long and Aldridge Law Firm in Atlanta as a corporate attorney specializing in mergers and acquisitions. She passed the bar on October 28, 2005 and was admitted to the Georgia Bar on November 10, 2005. Rodney P. Scott, ’80, is the Director of Finance for the “Studer Group” in Pensacola, Florida. Thomas Tipton, ’55, has established Hymns of Healing which includes speaking engagements, church worship services and concerts, musical performances at social and sporting events, including singing at the 2005 Humphrey Dinner before over 2,000 guests. She is a Staff Development Content Specialist for the Montgomery County Public Schools-Office of Organizational Development. Colonel (Ret.) James Stanley White, ’54, the 2005 Alumnus of the Year was recently given the honor of having the Temple University residence hall on Broad Street named after him. The James S. White Residence Hall is a 558-bed dormitory and is the first major construction project he led at Temple. A portrait of White was recently hung in the lobby of the hall in his honor. Irving C. Williams, ’54, received the $100,000 Cardinal Health Children’s Care Award for his lifetime contributions to the health and well-being of children. He spent the last four decades providing comprehensive health services to children in Gambia, Tanzania and the United States. Dr. Calvin E. Woodland, ’65, was inaugurated on October 7, 2005 as president of Capital Community College in Hartford, Connecticut. Prior to his appointment, Dr. Woodland served as Vice President for Student Services at Bergen Community College in Paramus, New Jersey.

Philadelphia Alumni Endows its Scholarship Giving For over 50 years, the Philadelphia Alumni Chapter has provided scholarship funds to Morgan students from the greater Philadelphia area. In recent years and currently, these funds are awarded from the Francis Walker Scholarship Fund. Francis Walker was a 1951 graduate of Morgan and an active member of the Philadelphia Alumni Chapter. At the October, 2005 meeting of the Morgan State University Foundation, the Philadelphia Alumni Chapter presented a $10,000 check to establish the Philadelphia Alumni Chapter Endowed Scholarship Fund. The proceeds from the endowment will not be utilized until such time that the Francis Walker Scholarship Fund is exhausted. The endowment fund will also be restricted to students from the greater Philadelphia area. MSU President Richardson Addresses Alumni During Annual MEAC Tournament This year, the annual Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) tournament was held in Raleigh, NC and it gave Dr. Earl S. Richardson an opportunity to address Morgan alumni from the area. Dr. Richardson was the keynote speaker during a luncheon hosted by the MSU National Alumni Association at the Embassy Suites Hotel in Cary, NC for association members in North Carolina and South Carolina. One notable attendee was Mrs. Minetta Eaton, a member of the Class of 1936 and an active member of the North Carolina Alumni Chapter. Class of 1961 The 45th Class reunion is fast approaching for the Class of 1962. They have been meeting regularly to celebrate this auspicious occasion in May during the Alumni Class Reunion and Recognition Luncheon. Some members of the class met recently in preparation for their 40th year reunion that is to take place this year. Class of 1976 The Class of 1976 has been meeting regularly for their upcoming 30th reunion. The Class of 1976 was officially the first class to graduate under the status of Morgan State University. Become a Class Agent Today! A Class Agent helps to build informed, unified, and motivated classes for a stronger MSU. Class agents serve as liaisons between their classmates and the University. Their primary responsibility is to encourage their classmates to reconnect and stay connected to the University. They will be responsible for informing classmates about University-related events, personal news items and networking opportunities; plan and promote class reunions, and work to encourage their classmates to make annual financial contributions to the University. Being a Class Agent is an excellent way to give back to the institution. Class Agents are needed for the following classes: 1938, 1939, 1940, 1941, 1942, 1943, 1944, 1945, 1946, 1947, 1948, 1951, 1963, 1971, 1973, 1974, 1977, 1982, 1986, 1988, 1993, 1997, 2000, 2001, 2004, 2005.
