Alumnus of the Year
Lt. Col. Lawrence K. Montgomery, Sr., U.S. Army (Ret.) t. Col. Lawrence K. Montgomery, Sr., ’56, was Morgan’s Director of Alumni Affairs from 1977 to 2000 and was MSU acting Vice President for Institutional Advancement from 1994 to 1997. An active alumnus since graduation, he is active now with the Washington, D.C. Metropolitan Alumni Chapter and is also a member of the Howard L. Cornish Baltimore Metropolitan Chapter. Lt. Col. Montgomery was attracted to Morgan by the music and ROTC programs, and by Bandmaster R. Hayes Strider’s offer of a secondsemester scholarship. By commencement in 1956, he had earned his B.S. degree in music education; completed the ROTC Military Science program; met his future wife, Sarah, MSU Class of ’57, and laid the foundation for an outstanding professional career. He served 22 years in the U.S. Army Adjutant Generals Corps and retired with the rank of lieutenant colonel. Soon thereafter, Morgan President Andrew Billingsley offered him a job as director of Alumni Affairs, and he accepted.

His top priority, from the start, was to raise the expectations placed on Morgan graduates to support the university, including support of Morgan alumni in key political positions, Lt. Col. Montgomery says. Under his watch, MSU alumni began to play major
roles in everything from recruitment of students, to lobbying of state legislators for needed resources for the University, to support of Morgan students during their peaceful protests for better educational facilities. Lt. Col. Montgomery’s long list of accomplishments as Alumni Director includes: establishment of MSU’s Alumni House; initiation of awards and other recognition programs for outstanding alumni, faculty and staff; establishment of the All-Classes Reunion during homecoming; and chartering of new alumni chapters that continue to be active, among many other items. Lt. Col. Montgomery and Sarah are lifetime members of the MSUNAA, with the distinction of having four children who are also MSU alumni and graduates of the ROTC program: Lissa K. Jackson, ’80; Lawrence K. Montgomery, Jr., ’83; Lorree K. Slye, ’85; and Lynnet K. Turner, ’86. “The progress that Morgan has made is just outstanding. It makes a graduate feel such pride,” he says. “It never would have happened without the support of Dr. Richardson and the alumni, staff, faculty and friends of the University.”
Class of ’59 Gives $76,000, Extends Challenge In May 2004, members of the Class of 1959 gathered at the Annual Alumni Awards and Class Reunion Luncheon. Some of them had not been back to Morgan since graduation, while others had returned every year — sometimes several times a year. As with every such event, the Morganites shared what had happened in their lives since the last time they were together, and they reflected on their appreciation for the role Morgan played in shaping their friendships and their lives. As a tangible sign of their gratitude, they presented a gift: a $35,000 endowed scholarship fund. At the 2008 Gala, MSU President Dr. Earl S. Richardson reported that a total of 1,063 academi-

cally qualified students could not return to Morgan because of financial reasons — 604 students in Fall 2007 and 459 in Spring 2008 — some for as little as $100. After hearing these statistics, members of the Class of ’59 were moved to give even more to their beloved alma mater. In May 2009, at their 50th Anniversary, they presented an additional gift of $41,502, for a grand total of $76,502. The economy remains strained. Financial resources are tight for many people. The Class of 1959 extends this challenge to all other classes: Meet, or better yet, surpass our level of giving! Nevertheless, be advised: We intend to keep on giving back to our alma mater!

As you return home to our alma mater on Friday, May 14, 2010, Alumni Day, I hope you feel welcomed as you walk the campus, and that you will take note of the special attention that has been taken to adorn it with blue and orange finery. While you are walking along, let your spirit hum, “Fair Morgan we love thee, so tried and so true, our hearts at thy name thrill Gloria E. Wayman with pride…” As our beloved President, Dr. Earl S. Richardson, transitions into retirement, I also hope that your pride translates to activism in the causes he has championed for so many years. Join the University staff in their efforts to demand equitable funding for Morgan and block the efforts of other institutions that are seeking to duplicate our programs. The new President will need your support to continue the efforts to address these and other initiatives. Our students are counting on the alumni to offer their time, talents and finances to ensure that Morgan remains a well-respected voice locally and nationally in the higher education community. The officers and rank-and-file members of the Morgan State University National Alumni Association (MSUNAA) join me in extending an invitation to you to attend the 70th Annual Alumni Awards and Class Reunion Luncheon on Alumni Day. At that time, we will formally congratulate and present awards to Lt. Col. Lawrence K. Montgomery, Sr., Alumnus of the Year; the Baltimore County Alumni Chapter, Chapter of the Year; and John J. Griswold, Jr., Special Achievement Award recipient. This luncheon provides an excellent opportunity for alumni and friends of MSU to renew old friendships and make new ones. Another highlight of this event is the address by the President. We look forward with much anticipation and excitement, realizing that Dr. Richardson will be sharing his words of wisdom during his final State of the University Address. MSU National Alumni Association Donates Bear Mobile to the University The new Morgan State University Bear Mobile is now on the road! MSU’s newest, most visible recruitment tool, a gift from the MSUNAA, is a brightly colored blue and orange conversion van equipped to let the public know about the offerings of the University. Among the high-tech van’s features are interactive video games with MSU teams and characters; promotional videos and printed materials; and information about Morgan’s academic programs. In March, the Bear Mobile began visiting malls and movie theaters in the Baltimore/Washington, D.C., area as part of the “Experience Morgan” campaign. Visits to high school games, college

MSU Foundation Sets Golf Tournament for May The Morgan State University Foundation, Inc. will hold its 21st Annual Invitational Golf Tournament on Friday, May 7, 2010, at The Club at Turf Valley Golf Course in Marriottsville, Md. The tournament benefits the Intercollegiate Athletics Scholarship Fund. The registration fee is $150 per
golfer, which includes a luncheon after the tournament. Prizes will be awarded to winning male and female golfers. A Golf Clinic during the event, directed by Morgan State University’s very own 1967 Hall of Fame golf team members — Tim McCready, Rodney “Binx” Watts and Al “Frog” Wilson — will provide three hours of individual instruction on the fundamentals of the game. The clinic begins at 9:30 a.m. The registration fee for the clinic is only $120 and includes the tournament luncheon. Luncheon-only participants can join the event at 2:30 p.m. for $35. The deadline for tournament reservations is April 28, 2010. John Griswold, Jr., ’51, Receives Special Achievement Award The Morgan State University National Alumni Association has chosen John J. Griswold, Jr., ’51, longtime member of the Philadelphia Alumni Chapter, as this year’s recipient of the Special Achievement Award. Mr. Griswold became active in the Philadelphia chapter in 1955, is a former two-term MSUNAA President and has a long track record of providing innovative and effective leadership of MSU alumni and other community activities. Mr. Griswold took his Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry from Morgan to the U.S. Army, where he served as a Chemist Instructor at Fort Riley, Kansas. After leaving the military, he received numerous awards for his work over 19 years as a chemist for the U.S. Department of Defense. His next career step was to the U.S. Department of Labor, where he earned several awards for his achievements in equal employment opportunity. During his 55 years as an active member of Morgan’s Philadelphia Chapter, Mr. Griswold has served the group on several committees, as Chapter President
and as Chapter Treasurer. As Treasurer, many years ago, he initiated the establishment of scholarship funds by local MSU alumni chapters. Mr. Griswold is now Financial Secretary and a Life Member of the MSUNAA. He has been a board member of the association since 1982 and a member of the board of Morgan State University Foundation, Inc. since 1985. As President of the MSUNAA, he appointed a committee to plan the construction of the Alumni House. The Alumni House Endowment Fund and regular scholarship donations to the MSU Foundation were also established during his tenure. The University has benefited from his financial generosity, as well. John Griswold and Family have contributed more than $30,000 in cash and in-kind donations to Morgan. This year’s Special Achievement Award adds to the numerous honors Mr. Griswold has received for his service to Morgan and others. His previous awards include, among others, MSU’s 1985 Alumnus of the Year Award, the Department of Labor Equal Opportunity of the Decade Award and the Certificate of Appreciation Award from Jones Tabernacle AME Church. “I am greatly honored by this award recognizing the work I have gladly done for my alma mater on the chapter and national levels,” Mr. Griswold says.

Alumnus Seeks Help with Morgan History Edwin T. Johnson, Ph.D., ’92, ’03, ’09, is writing a history of Morgan State University that is scheduled for publication in the fall of 2011. Dr. Johnson earned his doctorate in history from Morgan in May 2009 and teaches African-American history at the University of Maryland University College. His research interests include African-American male identity, AfricanAmerican fraternal organizations and the systematic disenfranchisement of minority populations. The Bears returned to the NCAA Tournament for the second consecutive year, after beating South Carolina State 68-61, on Saturday, March 13, in the MidEastern Athletic Conference title game, held in Winston-Salem, N.C. The Bears, who also won the MEAC regular season championship for the second year running, are the first repeat MEAC Tournament champions since Hampton in 2001 and 2002.
Morgan Opens New School of Social Work The tremendous growth of Morgan’s academic offerings has continued, with the launch of the University’s new School of Social Work, last fall. The school, now led by Anna R. McPhatter, Ph.D., had its origins in 1969 as the Undergraduate Social Welfare Program in MSU’s Department of Sociology. The program became one of the first undergraduate programs in the country to receive accreditation by the Council on Social Work Education, in 1971. Four years later, it received departmental status. Morgan’s School of Social Work offers courses leading to the Bachelor of Social Work, Master of Social Work and Ph.D. The school aims to prepare students to function as generalist social work practitioners, to begin a career in social welfare services, to enter a graduate school of social work at an advanced level or to enter other graduate schools with a social science major. Morgan history graduate Efa Ahmed-Williams, ’04, ’07, has been selected as a 2009 Baltimore Community Fellow by the Open Society Institute. The Open Society fellowships were established to assist individuals wishing to apply their education and professional experiences to serve marginalized communities. Ahmed-Williams is founder and director of Destiny Despite Sickle Cell Disease, an organization that encourages and empowers adolescents and young adults to become capable of managing their chronic illness by using coping strategies and life skills.
MSU chemistry graduate Ashika Brinkley, ’03, has been chosen as one of the New Haven Symphony Orchestra’s 2009 Women of Note. The honor is given to women who demonstrate outstanding leadership and commitment to community service. Brinkley earned a Master of Public Health degree from Yale University in 2005 and is Project Director of the New Haven Asthma Initiative.
Former Morgan State University football standout William Buford, ’55, has been inducted into the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Hall of Fame. He received the honor at the Charlotte (N.C.) Convention Center in February. Buford was drafted by the Green Bay Packers as an offensive tackle in 1954 and is a member of the MSU Hall of Fame.
Kevin L. Calfee, ’84, was recently profiled in the third edition of Who’s Who in Black Houston. Calfee is Division Manager of the Neighborhood Planning Division for the city of Houston’s Planning and Development Department, and a 24-year veteran of the department. Calfee received his master’s degree in city and regional planning from Morgan.

Toya G. Corbett, ’05, Student Activities Coordinator for Morgan State University, has recently published a book titled, “The Morgan State University Women: The First 60 Years: 1934–1994.” The publication details how, since its inception in 1934, the Morgan State University Women’s organization has greatly impacted MSU and the Baltimore community by aiding needy students, sponsoring cultural events and supporting the academic mission of the University. The cost of the book is $10.
Tonjia Simmone Kenner Coverdale, ’98, owner of an online boutique named Divas N Babes, was featured in Essence magazine last November. Her site, www.divasandbabes.com, offers “original apparel for haute mamas and cool babes.” Gwen Stefani, Tori Spelling and Angelina Jolie are among those who have worn Coverdale’s luxury baby carriers, and her line of clothing for babies has been featured nationally and internationally in various publications. Coverdale received her bachelor’s degree from Morgan in information sciences and systems.
Lorece V. Edwards, Dr.P.H., ’04, Director of Community Practice and Outreach/Assistant Professor in the Morgan State University School of Community Health and Policy, has been appointed to serve on the Commission on HIV/AIDS for Baltimore City by the Baltimore City Council. Dr. Edwards’ research areas include health communication and age-related differences in health communication needs, HIV risk behaviors, and identification of best practices for HIV prevention. She received her doctorate in public health from Morgan State.
Stephen G. Hall, Ph.D., ’90, Honors Program graduate of Morgan, has published a book titled, “A Faithful Account of the Race: African American Historical Writing in Nineteeth-Century America.” In this volume, Dr. Hall, assistant professor of history at The Ohio State University, charts the origins, meanings, methods, evolution

Cenell D. Harrell, ’08, has launched Driven Magazine (www.Driven-Magazine.com), an online publication for young adults aged 18–35, college students, recent college grads and young professionals. The magazine is written by young adults, with a focus on the lifestyle issues now facing the Millennial Generation, its founders say. Driven Magazine seeks to be a clearinghouse of vital information to inspire young people to explore their goals and celebrate their successes. Harrell’s degree from Morgan is in management.
Judith Murray Kitz, ’58, has published her first book, “Grandma Wants You To.” The author, who resides in Baltimore, was inspired to write the story because of her relationship with her grandson, whom she affectionately calls “J.” The book is available at Amazon.com, or by special order at any bookstore by using the ISBN: 978-1-4389-5136-2(sc).
Crystal J. Tennessee, ’04, Industrial Security Specialist for the Federal Bureau of Investigation, has received the 2009 Attorney General’s Award for Distinguished Service, the second-highest award given by the U.S. Department of Justice for employee performance. The honor was accompanied by a $3,500 cash award. Ms. Tennessee, a six-year employee of the FBI, received the award during a ceremony at DAR Constitution Hall in Washington, D.C., for her work in a transnational enforcement operation, “Operation Joint Hammer.”
Jim Ward, ’59, was recently featured in the online publication AARP Bulletin Today for his work with AARP’s Circles of Engagement program in Detroit, Mich. The program is designed to help build networks of volunteers led by AARP’s aged 50-andover membership, to help improve the health, safety, culture and economic well-being of com-

the U.S. Africa Command, received the 2010 Black Engineer of the Year Award for Lifetime Achievement, during a ceremony in Baltimore in February. Adm. Mike Mullen, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, presented the award to Gen. Ward, who is the only current AfricanAmerican four-star general in the U.S. Army. The award was the second major honor in as many months for Gen. Ward, who also received a Trumpet Award in January. Trumpet Awards go to individuals, primarily African Americans, who have achieved professional success and have inspired others.
Morganites in the NFL Morganite Visanthe Shiancoe, seven-year veteran of the National Football League and one of the league’s most productive tight ends, helped take the Minnesota Vikings to the NFC Conference Championship game this year. Shiancoe, a native of Birmingham, England, gained 566 yards and scored 11 touchdowns with 56 receptions in the 2009–10 regular season and added five catches for 94 yards and another touchdown in the postseason.
Morganite Chad Simpson, three-year veteran of the NFL and one of the league’s premier punt returners, helped take the Indianapolis Colts to the American Football Conference Championship game this year. Simpson, a native of Miami, Fla., was the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Player of the Year and first team AllConference selection in his collegiate career. During the AFC Championship game, Simpson posted a 27.7-yard kickoff return average and held the fourth highest single-game kickoff return average in franchise postseason history.

The Howard L. Cornish Metropolitan Baltimore Chapter of the Morgan State University National Alumni Association hosted the Silver Anniversary celebration of its Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship Breakfast, on Saturday, Jan. 23, 2010. The breakfast has become one of the Baltimore area’s signature cultural celebrations honoring Dr. King’s life and legacy. The chapter awarded $25,000 in scholarships and 28 Toshiba laptop computers to deserving Morgan students during the event. Eight hundred persons attended the 2010 MLK Scholarship Breakfast and were entertained with musical renditions by the Morgan State University Choir and the Morgan State University Jazz Ensemble. Our “Youth Spotlight” shone on 14-year-old Eddy Nubine, Jr. and his 12-year-old brother Elijah, who recited excerpts from Dr. King’s speech “Birmingham 1963, Keep Moving!!!” and from President Barack Obama’s victory speech, given in Grant Park in Chicago on election night 2008. Guest speaker for the Breakfast was the Honorable Patricia C. Jessamy, State’s Attorney for the city of Baltimore. Jessamy gave a challenging and thought-provoking speech centered on the theme of the breakfast: “We Must Still Believe in the Dream… of Change!” The 2010 MLK Breakfast Co-chairs Anthony and Diane McPhail presented the Dr. Martin D. Jenkins Lifetime Achievement in Higher Education Award to a very surprised Dr. Earl S. Richardson, Retiring President of Morgan State University. Dr. Clayton C. Stansbury presented the Howard L. Cornish Appreciation Award to an equally surprised MLK Breakfast Ticket Captain Estelle Pinkett, in recognition of her selling 100 or more tickets for the 20th consecutive year. The Haitian Earthquake Relief Fund Raffle at the event raised $3,000, which will be donated to the Clinton-Bush Haitian Relief Fund. Very special thanks go to Nestlé USA and to Verizon Maryland for their contributions of $10,000 each. D.C. Alumni Kicked Off HBCU Week Five members of MSU’s Washington, D.C. Metropolitan Alumni Chapter participated in the HBCU National Health Walk, which was held in D.C. on Saturday, Aug. 28, 2009. Morgan alumni Gloria Everett,

Gladys Walton Hall, Art Lawson, Jackie Lawson and Nellie Maskal represented the chapter in the event, which was designed to promote healthy HBCU campuses and communities. Walk captain Donna Richards Joyner, wife of radio host and philanthropist Tom Joyner, led HBCU alumni and members of the 105 Voices of History HBCU National Concert Choir on a two-mile walk from the Kennedy Center, around the Reflecting Pool and on to the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. There, the choir sang two songs, including the National Anthem. Visitors, joggers and walkers paused in silence as the students’ voices rang out from the place where Marian Anderson sang and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. spoke during the March on Washington nearly five decades ago. On the following Sunday, alumni enjoyed

the Concert Choir, which included members of the Morgan State University choir. Dr. Eric Conway, conductor of Morgan’s choir, was one of 12 regional directors of the 105 Voices Choir this year.

ALUMNI ASSOCIATION PRESENTS NEW ONLINE COMMUNITY The Morgan State University National Alumni Association is excited to announce the new alumni@morgan.edu Online Community. The new MSU Alumni Online Community will offer new and improved features to better serve you and fellow alumni, and the good news is that it’s all free. Some of the features will include: Business Exchange – Allows alumni to promote their businesses, products or services. Career Services – Build connections for graduating students, and enable career networking between all members with job postings, career mentoring, etc. Chapter, Club and Class Pages – These pages allow groups to stay connected. Manage and promote events and activities, upload images, post announcements regarding personal achievements, i.e., job promotions, awards, marriages, births, etc. E-mail Marketing – Allows us to do eye-catching e-mail blasts with ease.
Reunion CD (2 years before and 2 years after) – $24.99 + $7.95 Shipping and Handling Methods of payment for the directory include: credit card, check by phone or invoice. Walmart Donates $20,000 to MSU Engineers

Levey Williams, ’81, presented a check in the amount of $20,000 from Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. to the Morgan State University Chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE), in February. Williams graduated Levey Williams, ’81, of from Morgan with a Walmart (left) with Charles Hall, Director of the Student bachelor’s degree in Work Experience Program of political science and Morgan’s School of now is a Recruiter in Engineering the College Relations Division of Walmart, in Bentonville, Ark. During his visit to the University, Williams also conducted a seminar for NSBE members on preparing for the job market.
Morgan’s Center for Continuing and Professional Studies (CCPS) offers a range of non-credit programs that focus on developing and enriching the lives of the lifelong adult learner. New for Fall 2010: Conversational Spanish with an International Study Abroad Option (tour of Spain). This eight-week course introduces vocabulary and sentence structures to facilitate simple conversations in Spanish. No previous knowledge of Spanish is necessary. Resume Upload – Users will be able to upload their resumes as part of their online directory profile. Social Networking – Enables registered authenticated users to create and manage a network of acknowledged friends using an opt-in invitation protocol through Facebook, MySpace or LinkedIn. Enhanced Security – Protect your profile information with enhanced, password-protected security. Photo Album – Add photo albums and slideshows to your profile page via your Flickr® account, to show others what you’ve been up to and view friends’ photos. Blogs – Everyone has an opinion. Later this year, we will introduce a blogging feature for your online community.
