A Mess age from the President Dear Alumni, On behalf of the officers and members of the Morgan State University National Alumni Association (MSUNAA), I extend a special invitation to all alumni to join us at the 71st Annual Alumni Awards and Class Reunion Luncheon, which will be held on Friday, May 20, 2011. Alumni Day, historically, has been a day of great celebration that affords alumni and friends of the University the opportunity to renew old friendships and cultivate new ones. During the luncheon, we will formally congratulate and present awards to Gen. William “Kip” Ward, ’71, Alumnus of the Year; the ROTC Alumni Chapter, Chapter of the Year and Dr. Clayton C. Stansbury, ’55, Special Achievement Award recipient. We will also recognize the reunion classes ending in “1” and “6.” Another highlight of the luncheon will be the introduction of our new President, Dr. David Wilson. If you have not yet had the opportunity to meet Dr. Wilson, you don’t want to miss this occasion, where he will share his vision for growing and sustaining your alma mater!

The MSUNAA has planned a wonderful “Welcome Back” Reception, which will begin at 11:00 a.m., in the lobby outside of the Calvin and Tina Tyler Ballroom. Immediately following the reception, the Luncheon begins at 12:00 noon in the ballroom, which is located on the second floor of the University Student Center.

When you return to campus, you will notice the special attention that has been taken to adorn the campus in dashes of blue and orange. I hope the welcome being extended will be warmly received and that you will take this opportunity to explore the campus and see all of the wonderful things that are taking place at the urban university that we fondly call our alma mater.

ALUMNUS OF THE YEAR General William “Kip” Ward, U.S. Army (Ret.), ’71

eneral William E. “Kip” Ward, U.S. Army (Ret.), is a 1971 graduate of Morgan State University, where he earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in political science. He also holds a Master of Arts degree in political science from Pennsylvania State University.

General Ward retired as a four-star General in April 2011. He is only the fifth African-American to achieve this rank and became the first Commander of U.S. Africa Command in Stuttgart, Germany on Oct. 1, 2007. U.S. Africa Command is one of six unified geographic commands within the Department of Defense unified command structure. General Ward served as a principal advisor to the President of the United States, Secretary of Defense, Congress and the Joint Staff on security matters in Africa.

General Ward was commissioned into the Infantry in June 1971. His military education includes the Infantry Officer Basic and Advanced courses, U.S. Army Command and General Staff College, and the U.S. Army War College. His military service has included overseas tours in Korea, Egypt, Somalia, Bosnia and Israel, two tours in Germany and a wide variety of assignments in the United States, including Alaska and Hawaii.

Before assuming his former position, General Ward served as the Deputy Commanding General/Chief of Staff, U.S. Army Europe and Sev-

enth Army. While in this capacity, he was selected by the Secretary of State, Condoleezza Rice, to serve as the United States Security Coordinator, Israel - Palestinian Authority, a position he held from March through December 2005.

General Ward is an active member of the ROTC Alumni Chapter and an active member of the Class of 1971. He and his wife, Joyce, are Life Members of the Morgan State University National Alumni Association and staunch supporters of the University. He is also a life member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. General Ward has received numerous awards and recognitions, including the Defense Distinguished Service Medal, Army Distinguished Service Medal, Defense Superior Service Medal and an impressive list of other medals, ribbons and badges. He received an Honorary Doctorate Degree in Public Service from Morgan State University and an Honorary Degree in Humane Letters from Virginia State University. Other recognitions have included the Black Engineer of the Year Award, the Phoenix Award presented by the Mayor of Atlanta, selection to Ebony magazine’s “Power 150,” “Rock of the Year” (Outstanding African American Military Officer), Omega Psi Phi Distinguished Member Recognition and induction into the Morgan ROTC Alumni Chapter Hall of Fame, to name a few. General Ward has published a number of writings in various magazines and journals.

Give to Morgan’s ‘Five Dollar Scholarship Fund’

During his inaugural address in October, MSU President Dr. David Wilson told the story of his father’s parting gift to him. Dr. Wilson was leaving home to attend Tuskegee University, the first person in his family to attend college. His father was an Alabama sharecropper of very modest means, and the gift to his son was all of the money he had: five dollars.

After telling this story, Dr. Wilson launched the Morgan State University Five Dollar Scholarship Fund, an initiative predicated on the simple belief that we must all give whatever we can to support those who seek a college education.

“It is through education that we will empower successive generations of students and prepare them to be responsible citizens and dynamic leaders in their chosen professions,” says President Wilson, who then launched the Fund with a pledge of $100,000.

This ambitious initiative will be established by an endowment fund to be managed by the Morgan State University Foundation. Its targeted initial corpus of $5,000,000 will be augmented by ongoing contributions from public and private funding sources.

Your gift, no matter the size, is deeply valued and urgently needed.

Alumni Day 2011 “It’s all about the journey, and the friends you make along the way.” Classes ending in “1” and “6,” it’s time, once again, to celebrate your Morgan journey with your friends. The 71st Annual Alumni Awards and Class Reunion Luncheon will be held on Friday, May 20, 2011. CHAPTER OF THE YEAR The ROTC Alumni Chapter

The ROTC Alumni Chapter of the Morgan State University National Alumni Association was established in October 1996 and was officially chartered on Oct. 22, 2004. Phyllis Davis now serves as its President. The ROTC Chapter has made great strides in recruiting and retaining new members.

The ROTC Alumni Chapter is unique as a member of the MSU National Alumni Association in that it provides support and assistance to Morgan’s ROTC Program. As such, the chapter’s mission is to ensure the success of the program and to sustain its cadets as they work to obtain their undergraduate degrees and, simultaneously, seek commission as Army Officers. Some of the chapter’s initiatives and programs include providing emergency funds for deserving cadets in financial crises; providing a $5,000 Cadet Scholarship each academic year; participating in the Annual Hall of Fame Recognition honoring a current or past military member of the Morgan ROTC Bear Battalion; providing funding for the ROTC Program and cadets for training opportunities and events; partnering with local schools, community colleges, the community and military

organizations such as the National Guard in recruiting potential Morgan students and ROTC candidates; and participating in a mentoring program.

The chapter has been a strong advocate for financial support of the Morgan State University Foundation, Inc. and the MSU National Alumni Association. In addition, members regularly attend University and Alumni Association events, including the Alumni Day luncheon, Annual Candlelight Memorial Service, the Gala, the Golf Tournament, the MEAC Basketball Tournament, various alumni chapter events and other special events.

Dr. Ruth Simmons to Keynote Morgan’s 2011 Commencement

Ruth J. Simmons, Ph.D., President of Brown University, will be keynote speaker for Morgan State University’s 135th Commencement exercises, on Saturday, May 21. Commencement will be held at Hughes Stadium. Dr. Simmons, the first female President of Brown University and one of America’s leading educators, shares the drive of Morgan President Dr. David Wilson to create the next generation of American leaders and innovators. Much like her counterpart Dr. Wilson, Dr. Simmons believes in the power of education to transform the lives of individuals.

A graduate of Dillard and Harvard Universities, Dr. Simmons is the first black president of an Ivy League institution and was named America’s best college president in 2001 by Time magazine. She has received numerous honors, including the 2001 Presidents Award from the United Negro College Fund, the 2002 Fulbright Lifetime Achievement Medal, the 2004 Eleanor Roosevelt Val-Kill Medal, the 2010 Ellis Island Medal of Honor and the 2010 Foreign Policy Association Medal. The Texas native was also recently appointed by President Obama as a member of the President’s Commission on White House Fellowships.

Special Achievement Award Recipient Clayton C. Stansbury, Ph.D., ’55

Dr. Clayton C. Stansbury received his Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology, with honors, from Morgan State University in 1955. He was awarded a master’s degree in general psychology from Howard University and a Ph.D. in social psychology and mental health from the University of Maryland.

He began his professional career in psychology as a teacher at Howard University in 1962. In 1967, he began his 29-year tenure at Morgan State as a Psychological Counselor in the Counseling Center. From 1973 to 1975, he served as Chair of the Psychology Department. Dr. Stansbury also served as the Assistant Dean of the College, in charge of the Freshman Program; Director of the Lower Division; Vice President for Student Affairs and Director of the Honors Program, a position he held for 16 years. Dr. Stansbury was the first Morgan graduate to become a Vice President at Morgan. In addition, he served as Chair of the University Scholarship Committee for 16 years, managing millions of dollars, and was in charge of an intricate, comprehensive web of honors organizations, activities and awards for the University. He founded five new chapters of national honor societies at Morgan that are still active. Dr. Stansbury established many of the awards that are presented at the honors convocations

and introduced the honors stoles that are still worn at Morgan Commencements.

In January 1974, the faculty elected him Chief University Marshal, and he continued to serve in this capacity for 13 years after his retirement in 1996. His 35 years as Chief Marshal afford him the longest tenure in the position.

Dr. Stansbury has never missed an Alumni Day luncheon, or its equivalent, for the past 45 years. He served for three years as a member of the Board, representing the Howard L. Cornish Alumni Chapter, and has been an active member of that Chapter since 1984. He was named Alumnus of the Year in 1987.

Dr. Stansbury has received numerous awards, special recognitions and citations, including the Phoenix Award on two occasions as Administrator of the Year, the NAFEO Distinguished Alumni Award and induction into the Morgan Psychology Department Hall of Fame, the MSU Alumni Hall of Fame and the Delta Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Hall of Fame, to name a few.

Dr. Stansbury is a Life Member of the MSU National Alumni Association, the NAACP, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity and his Delta Lambda Chapter of Alpha. He has been married to Catherine Posey Stansbury, a 1956 graduate of Morgan, for 53 years. He and his wife have a deep love for Morgan and are staunch supporters, both financially and through the in-kind services they provide to the University.

Morgan’s James Phillips Joins MEAC Hall of Fame James Phillips, ’68, former wrestling coach for Morgan State University, was inducted in the MidEastern Athletic Conference Hall of Fame on March 11, 2011. Phillips’ wrestling program was considered number one among the nation’s black colleges, winning the MEAC Championship 13 consecutive years from 1983 to 1995. The program was ranked among the country’s top 10 for six straight years, making Morgan the only Historically Black Institution ever to climb to national recognition. Phillips was also Morgan’s Head Football Coach in 1983 and 1984.

A Morgan alumnus, Phillips was an outstanding performer in football. An offensive guard, he ranked

among the top 10 players in the nation at the position on Morgan’s 1963 and 1964 teams and the national champion 1965 team. After graduation, he played in the NFL and CFL for two years before retiring with a knee injury.

Phillips received his undergraduate and graduate degrees from Morgan in physical education and administration. He served for more than 30 years as an Assistant Professor in Morgan’s Department of Health, Physical Education and Recreation before retiring in 2004.

Sen. Catherine Pugh Named MEAC Distinguished Alumnus

Maryland State Senator Catherine E. Pugh, ’73, ’77, received the MidEastern Athletic Conference 2011 Distinguished Alumnus Award, during the 2011 MEAC Basketball Tournament, on March 10, 2011. Senator Pugh is President and CEO of the public relations consulting firm C. E. Pugh & Company. A Democrat, she represents Maryland’s 40th Legislative District and

has been a member of the Maryland Senate since 2007.

She is also the 2010–2012 Chair of the Legislative Black Caucus of Maryland and Second Vice Chair of the Women Legislators of Maryland. Before joining the Senate, she represented the 40th District in the House of Delegates (2005–2007) and was a member of the Baltimore City Council (1999–2004). Senator Pugh received bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Morgan in business administration.

MSU Choir Performs for the President

MSUNAA Launches New Online Community Our new iModules Online Community was launched on Wednesday, Nov. 17, 2010. The features of this new online tool enable alumni to: search for and contact their friends from MSU; create and customize their own profile page; share and view photos and class notes; participate in conversations on the message board; post resumes; register for MSU events; look for a job; engage in career networking; use Facebook and Twitter; and much, much more. Some comments about our new site follow: “I love this. When I got my postcard in my inbox, I exclaimed, ‘It's about time.’ I had another way to connect to my fellow BEARS, but it is unlike this. It was just the newsletters, which was nice to receive but was not as fast as this. This feels more real and live. I definitely trust the Morgan site more than other ways to connect to Morgan. This is going to open new doors for me. This will cure my lonely, long distance blues in California. Perhaps it will help me connect to my fellow alumni students in California. Go Bears!!”

A performance before another head of state is on the choir’s agenda for June. A concert for Pope Benedict XVI is scheduled as part of a 12-day tour of Italy.

Earl Banks, Roosevelt Brown Named to Black College Football Hall of Fame

The Black College Football Hall of Fame has inducted two Morgan greats, legendary football coach Earl Banks and former offensive lineman Roosevelt Brown, into its Class of 2011. Banks and Brown were among 11 new Hall of Famers chosen from a list of 35 finalists. The finalists were selected by journalists and former football executives from around the country.

Banks was Head Football Coach at Morgan State from 1960 to 1973 and completed his career with a .839 win-loss ratio. His 1965–68 teams won 31 straight games, the seventh longest winning streak in college football history. He also had three unbeaten regular seasons, five CIAA conference championships and led the Bears to four bowl games. He was the CIAA Coach of the Year in 1962, 1965 and 1966 and sent 41 of his players to the pros. In addition to coaching, Banks was Morgan State’s athletic director through 1987.

Banks was also a philanthropist. He chaired a fund drive that raised $1 million for Lafayette Square Community Center and was a board member for numerous community organizations. He died in 1993 at age 69.

Brown, a native of Charlottesville, Va., played football at Morgan, where he was a two-time Black College All-American (1951–1952) and was drafted by the New York Giants in 1953. During the height of his career, the Giants won six divisional crowns and one NFL title. Brown was a virtually unanimous All-NFL choice for eight straight years. He was named to nine Pro Bowls and was awarded Lineman of the Game honors for the 1956 NFL Championship game. In 1975, Brown became only the second player to be elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame on the merits of his offensive line play alone. He died in 2004 at the age of 71.

MSU Golf Tournament Is Set for May The Morgan State University Foundation, Inc. will present its 22nd Annual Invitational Golf Tournament to benefit the Intercollegiate Athletics Scholarship Fund on Friday, May 6, 2011, at the Turf Valley Golf Course, in Ellicott City, Md. The registration fee is $150.00 per golfer, which includes a luncheon following the tournament. Prizes will be awarded for men and women.

A golf clinic, directed by Morgan State University’s very own 1967 Hall of Fame Golf Team, Tim McCready, Rodney “Binx” Watts and Al “Frog” Wilson, will provide three hours of individual instruction on the fundamentals of the game, followed by play on the course during the tournament. The clinic begins at 9:30 a.m. and includes the tournament luncheon, for only $120.00.

2011 Homecoming Host Hotel Discounted room rates for Morgan State University alumni and friends are available for booking now at the Sheraton Baltimore North Hotel, this year’s official Homecoming host hotel. The hotel is located at 903 Dulaney Valley Road, Towson, MD 21204. The Homecoming rate, for Friday, Oct. 7, 2011 through Sunday, Oct. 9, 2011, is $129.00 per night, which does not include Maryland State and hotel occupancy taxes. Southern Maryland Alumni Hold Blue and Orange Scholarship Fundraiser

The Morgan State University Southern Maryland Alumni Chapter held its Fifth Annual Blue and Orange Dinner Dance on Sept. 11, 2010, at the Jaycees Community Center in Waldorf, Md. Honorees for the affair were Judge Thurman Rhodes, ’72, of Prince George’s County, Kevin Short, ’84, of Charles County and Steve Hawkins, ’73, of St. Mary’s County. Joan Y. Chapman, ’68, of Charles County was named Alumna of the Year. The proceeds from the fundraiser will support the chapter’s 2011 Scholarship Fund.

The Southern Maryland Alumni chapter will hold its Sixth Annual Blue and Orange Dinner Dance on Sept.

Class of ’71 Holds Reunion Breakfast

On Homecoming, Saturday, October 23, 2010, the Class of 1971 held its second class reunion since graduating in June 1971. Fifty classmates, along with spouses and friends, gathered to celebrate the class’ upcoming 40-year reunion. It was a joyous occasion that brought together classmates from such far-flung places as Germany, Georgia, Florida, Texas, Virginia, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Washington, D.C., and various parts of Maryland. The class members enjoyed a delicious buffet breakfast as they reminisced about the good days at Morgan. Many memories were exchanged as classmates recalled the good times in the student union, favorite teachers, mentors and special friendships, several of which resulted in marriages to other classmates.

University President Dr. David Wilson welcomed the class and recognized its members as representative of the quality education and opportunities that Morgan continues to provide its students. Although a few classmates are enjoying the fruits of their labor as retirees, many class members continue to be successful leaders in the business world, the military, government, education and the medical and the legal professions.

• Oct. 8, 2011 – Annual Class of 1969 Homecoming Brunch. The brunch takes place from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in the University Center, Room 212. The cost is $20.00.

Class of 1960’s Giving Rate Exceeds 40 Percent!

Sixty-four members of the Class of 1960 made contributions toward their 50th Anniversary class gift to Morgan, including giving to various endowments, the MSU Chapel, the Class Fund and the unrestricted fund at the MSU Foundation. With approximately 145 active names and addresses on The Class List, the class is happy to announce that its percentage of giving is approximately 44 percent. This is great news for the 2010 50th Reunion Class, whose members have responded generously to pleas for donations, with contributions of $61,136.66 since their previous class anniversary. In addition, some in the class became Life Members of the MSU National Alumni Association.

About 70 classmates of the Class of ’60, their spouses, friends and family members attended the 70th Annual Alumni Awards and Class Reunion Luncheon on May 14, 2010. After the luncheon, more than 30 of the class members attended a brief meeting and sat for their class photo. Twenty members of the class marched in the Commencement procession in full academic regalia, on Saturday morning. On Saturday evening, almost 60 class members, along with spouses, friends and family, enjoyed a three-hour dinner cruise around the Baltimore Harbor aboard a chartered riverboat. Weekend activities concluded on Sunday with a Worship/Memorial Service at the MSU Chapel.

Class members have been reminded to give annually, stay connected and persuade other classmates to give, particularly to their 1960 Endowed Scholarship Fund.

They are looking forward to their 55th anniversary reunion in 2015, when, hopefully, their rate of giving will have reached 50 percent or more.

ALUMNI ON THE MOVE Sheila R. Tillerson Adams, ’79, has been appointed Administrative Judge for Prince George’s County Circuit Court and the 7th Circuit, which includes Calvert, Charles, Prince George’s and St. Mary’s counties. Morgan graduate Robert M. Bell, ’66, Chief Judge of the Maryland Court of Appeals, announced the historic appointment last September 4. Judge Adams earned her law degree from the Howard University School of Law in 1982 and a Master of Laws degree in taxation from the Georgetown University Law Center in 1987. She served as a Staff Attorney for Legal Aid Bureau, Inc., as an Assistant State’s Attorney for Prince George’s County and as Deputy County Attorney for P.G. County before being appointed a judge of the District Court of Maryland in 1993.

Lt. Col. Aaron Andrews, U.S. Army (Ret.), ’74, was featured in an article in Diverse Issues in Higher Education last fall. The article lauded his work since 2004 as President and CEO of the United Negro College Fund Special Programs Corporation. UNCFSPC is an organization spun off from UNCF to “organize and deliver educational support services” to minority-serving institutions. In the article, which was published online on October 12, 2010, Lt. Col. Andrews credited Morgan State with transforming him from “an insecure, inner-city kid” into a national leader in education.

The work of sculptor Vinnie Bagwell, ’79, was displayed at ArtsWestchester in White Plains, N.Y., in the inaugural exhibition of the “Enslaved Africans’ Rain Garden,” last fall. The exhibition featured five one-third scale sculpture models commemorating the enslaved Africans who resided at the Philipse Manor Hall in Yonkers, N.Y. “Each character for the Enslaved Africans’ Rain Garden has been designed to remind viewers that artistry is a powerful, useful tool for social transformation,” Bagwell said. The project was the first phase of a larger exhibition being planned.

Ronald K. Barrett, Ph.D., ’70, gave a presentation on the topic “Cultural Mistrust and Health Care for African-Americans” to a group of Loyola Marymount University students in October. Dr. Barrett is chair of the Department of Psychology of the school, which is in Los Angeles, Calif. His goal for the talk was “to bring about awareness to the LMU community of the social injustices that have caused this cultural mistrust that continues to this day,” said an October 25, 2010 article on LMU’s website. Dr. Barrett is a native of Brooklyn, N.Y., and has been at LMU for more than 30 years.

Janet Costa Bates, ’81, has won a Lee & Low New Voices Award for her book titled “Seaside Dream,” a tender portrait of a close-knit Cape Verdean family. The children’s book was published last September and is available at booksellers. “I hope Cape Verdean children feel proud seeing themselves represented in this book,” Bates says. “…I also hope it helps all children look for reasons to celebrate their own families and cultures.”

Carolyn Colvin, ’71, has been confirmed by the U.S. Senate as Deputy Commissioner of Social Security.

She was nominated by President Barack Obama in October 2009 for the position, in which she serves as the principal deputy to the Commissioner as well as the Secretary to the Social Security Board of Trustees.

Colvin has spent her award-winning career managing programs designed to assist people with their health care and financial needs, having held leadership positions at the D.C. Department of Human Services, the Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services, AMERIGROUP, DC, and the Maryland Department of Transportation, as well as Social Security. She earned her undergraduate and graduate degrees in business administration from Morgan.

Valerie A. Cooper, ’83, was named 2010 Outstanding Entrepreneur of the Year by the National Association for Female Executives in New York City.

Cooper is founder and president of Picture That, LLC, an organization that provides art advisory, curatorial and appraisal services to Fortune 500 companies and private clients. Before starting her own firm, she worked with Goldman Sachs & Co. as Vice President of Risk Management Technology for 15 years. Cooper was senior class president and summa cum laude graduate at Morgan and earned an M.B.A. from Columbia University Business School and an Appraisal Studies in Fine and Decorative Arts Certificate from New York University.

Charisse Davenport, D.O., ’97, has been named Assistant Medical Director of Patient First–White Marsh in Maryland. In her new position, she will support the center’s Medical Director in oversight of operations. Dr. Davenport began her career with Patient First as a staff physician at the Perry Hall center in 2006. She earned her Bachelor of Science degree from Morgan in biology and her medical degree from Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. She completed an internship and residency in internal medicine at Franklin Square Hospital Center in Baltimore.

Leadership Maryland has selected Windy L. Deese, ’78, as a member of its Class of 2011. Deese is Assistant Director of Development, Baltimore County, United Way of Central Maryland. Leadership Maryland is an independent, educational, nonprofit organization designed to inform top-level executives from the public and private sector about the critical issues, challenges and opportunities facing Maryland and its regions. Deese is one of 52 accomplished and talented leaders selected to participate in the eight-month program.

Marcus Ervin, ’08, was named Employee of the Year for Howard County, Md. The 2010 award was in recognition of Ervin’s extraordinary efforts and contribution toward fulfilling the mission of Howard County Government and acknowledging his outstanding level of achievement and service to the people of Howard County. Ervin played a critical role in managing several of the undertakings and real estate development projects of the Howard County Department of Housing and Community Development, where he works as a Development Associate. His Bachelor of Science degree from Morgan is in Architecture and Environmental Design.

Ronald L. Freeland, ’71, has been named Vice President and Mid-Atlantic District Director for T.Y. Lin International (TYLI), a full-service infrastructure consulting firm.

In his new position, Freeland works out of TYLI’s Baltimore office and is responsible for overseeing and growing the company’s offices in Raleigh, N.C., Alexandria, Va., and Baltimore, Md. “…Ron’s well-established skills in operations, people and process management, finance and business administration make him a tremendous asset to our firm and the clients that we serve,” says Robert Radley, P.E., Senior Vice President and East Region Director of TYLI. Freeland earned his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Morgan and his M.B.A. from Syracuse University. He is also a certified public accountant in Maryland.

Pearl T. Furey, ’52, had her 105th birthday on Feburary 2, 2011. She celebrated the occasion on Feburary 5 with family, friends, former students, fellow retired teachers and members of the Morgan State University Southern Maryland Alumni Chapter, at Fenwick Landing Nursing Home in Waldorf, Md. Furey received her bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Morgan and taught for more than 40 years in the public schools of Charles County, Md. She is a charter and honorary member of the Southern Maryland Alumni Chapter.

Melissa Hypolite, ’04, is the new Associate Director of Admissions at the Medix School in Towson, Md. Her previous employers include YellowBook, USA Network and Nielsen TV Ratings. Hypolite earned her bachelor’s degree in communications from Morgan and her M.B.A. at the University of Maryland, University College.

Vincent O. Leggett, ’75, has been named Executive Director of the Annapolis Housing Authority’s Board of Commissioners. Leggett is founder of the Blacks of the Chesapeake Foundation and was executive director of the Anne Arundel County Housing Authority from 1987 to 1989. He has a bachelor’s degree in urban planning and community development from Morgan and a master’s in public administration from Central Michigan University. The housing authority has a staff of about 60 employees and owns residential properties with 790 family units, housing approximately 2,000 persons.

Omar S. McIntosh, ’01, is the new Managing Director of the Bermuda Government Office in Washington, D.C. The office provides semiconsular services for Bermuda in the U.S. in the areas of inward investment and international financial services. It will also liaise with members of Congress and other decision-makers to further Bermuda’s business and financial interests in the States. “Under Mr. McIntosh’s leadership and counsel, I am certain that Bermuda will be promoted as the progressive and highly reputable jurisdiction it is,” says Dr. the Hon. Ewart F. Brown; J.P., M.P., Premier of Bermuda. McIntosh earned his bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from Morgan and has an M.B.A. from the Carey Business School at The Johns Hopkins University.

A recent article in The New York Times spotlighted the Choir Academy of Harlem in New York City, led by Andrea E. Parris, Ed.D., ’99. The Times noted that the school had improved its graduation rate in one year to a level 15 percent above the school system’s average, and that it had been removed from the system’s closure list. This news continues a trend of academic improvement for the sixth through 12th grade public school since Dr. Parris became principal in January 2008. The Choir Academy has received two “B”s and an “A” on the New York City Department of Education’s annual Middle School Progress Report since then. Dr. Parris is an alumna

of Morgan’s School of Education and Urban Studies, where she earned a master’s degree in educational administration and supervision.

Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley appointed Lynn M. Reed, ’88, to a new work force development team at the Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation in January. Reed’s new post is Executive Director for the Governor’s Workforce Investment Board (GWIB). The board is responsible for “developing policies and strategies to form a coordinated work force system from a variety of education, employment and training programs.” Reed has more than 15 years of work force development experience on the national, state and local levels. She joined GWIB in 2008 and served as the board’s Deputy Director, leading the O’Malley administration’s Skills2Compete initiative, before being promoted to her current position. The governor has set a goal to increase the number of Marylanders who receive skills training by 20 percent by the end of 2012.

Lavania L. Rice-Fitzpatrick, Ed.D., ’63, ’04, was appointed to the Baltimore County Commission on Disabilities

by Baltimore County Executive Kevin Kamenetz in February.

Her term on the Commission runs through February 2014. Dr. Rice-Fitzpatrick was raised in Baltimore and developed her passion for community service at an early age. She served in the Baltimore City Public Schools before beginning work with the State of Maryland Developmental Disabilities Administration in 1984. From 1994 until her retirement in 2001, she was Assistant Director for two programs that provided training for Baltimore City Public Schools in Special Education.

Lieutenant Colonel Sandra M. Thompson, ’88, has retired after 25 years of military service in the U.S. Army.

She was awarded the Legion of Merit upon retirement. She culminated her service as the Deputy G4 for the III Armored Corps Headquarters in Fort Hood, Texas. Born in Baltimore, Md., Lieutenant Colonel Thompson earned her B.S. in mental health and English from Morgan and received her commission through the ROTC program in 1987 as an Ordnance Officer. She is pursuing a Ph.D. in organizational psychology now at Walden University.

Berkeley College has named Conrad Walker, ’02, as Campus Operating Officer of the school’s new Brooklyn, N.Y., location. In his new role, Walker oversaw preparation of the new facilities and now handles day-to-day operations and monitoring of personnel. He has held numerous positions during his time at Berkeley, most recently Associate Dean of Student Development and Campus Life, New York. Walker has an M.A. in higher education administration from New York University in addition to his B.S. in management information systems from Morgan.

Broadcast journalist and former MSU telecommunications major Donal Ware, ’98, was recently featured in Jet magazine. The article covered his successful talk radio show, From the Press Box To Press Row, a nationally syndicated radio show now in its sixth year. Another article, published last August 15 in North Carolina’s News & Observer, called Ware “The voice of black college sports.” Thirty radio stations carry his show, which initially focused on HBCU sports and also began covering pro sports in 2007, when Ware interviewed Serena Williams and covered the NBA All-Star Game.

Gus J. White ’65, was honored as the MSU Mathematics Department “Alumnus of the Year 2010–2011,” at the 13th Annual Mathematics Reunion Banquet last November 12.

White has been investing in the academic pursuits of Morgan mathematics majors as an esteemed member of the Mathematics Club (Mu Alpha Tau) for the past 12 years. He will be the keynote speaker for the 14th Annual Mathematics Reunion Banquet this year. White earned a B.S. degree in mathematics from Morgan and an M.S. degree in management from MIT. He organized the Eastern Shore of Maryland Alumni Chapter after retiring from the Department of Defense and returning to the Eastern Shore in 2007.

Malverne Winborne, Ed.D., ’73, is now director of the Office of Charter Schools at Eastern Michigan University.

He had been the associate director since 2002. After getting his bachelor’s degree in psychology from Morgan, Dr. Winborne went to the University of Michigan, where he received his master’s in psychology and doctorate in education and psychology. He has volunteered with the Detroit, Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti public school districts and has been active with the United Negro College Fund.

Baltimore County Executive Kevin Kamenetz has named Yolanda Winkler, ’95, as the Director of Government Affairs for Baltimore County. Winkler last worked as Special Assistant in the Governor’s Office, where she assisted with legislation development and a variety of administrative tasks.

She also has experience in local government, having worked as Deputy Director of the Baltimore City Mayor’s Office of Intergovernmental Relations. She holds a master’s degree in business administration from Morgan.

Morgan State University won the 2011 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Cheerleading Championship this March at the Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Winston Salem, N.C. The Bears, who captured first place honors for the first time since 2006, also won first place in the Overall Performance category; first place in the All-Girls Division and first place in the All-Star Division.

MSU's Ashley Cottrell won the gold in the All-Star Division while Morgan captured its second consecutive title in the All-Girls Division.

The 2011 MEAC Cheerleading Championship was the opening event of the 2011 MEAC Basketball Tournament.
