Preparing Morgan for the Next Decade...


FIVE GOALS - TEN YEARS

2011-2021 Goal 1:

Enhancing Student Success

Morgan will create an educational environment that enhances student success by hiring and retaining well qualified, experienced and dedicated faculty and staff, offering challenging, internationally relevant academic curricula, and welcoming and supporting a diverse and inclusive campus community.

Goal 2:

Enhancing Morgan’s Status as a Doctoral Research University

Morgan will enhance its status as a Doctoral Research University through it success in securing grants and contracts and its faculty’s achievements in baskic and applied research, professional expression, artistic creation, and creative inquiry. Additionally, intiatives will be designed to enhance doctoral achievement in the science, technology, engineering, and mathematical (STEM) and non-STEM disciples for underrepresented students of color.

Goal 3:

Improving and Sustaining Morgan’s Infrastructure and Operational Processes

Morgan will enhance its infrastructure and processes by improving the efficiency and efficacy of its operating procedures, by focusing on the environmental sustainability of its facilities, and by meeting the technological customer service needs of its students, faculty, staff and community.

Goal 4:

Growing Morgan’s Resources Morgan will expand its human capital as well as its financial resources by investing in the professional development of faculty, staff, and students, seeking greater financial support from alumni, the State and federal governments, private and philanthropic sources and establishing collaborative relationships with private and public entities. The issue of indirect costs associated with contracts and grants will be revisited.

Goal 5:

Engaging with the Community

Morgan will engage with community residents and officials in the use of knowledge derived from faculty and student research, the sharing of mutually beneficial resources, and the appropriate and timely dispatch of University experts and professionals to collaborate in addressing community concerns.

Welcome

Dear Colleagues: Welcome to Morgan’s spring 2020 Administrative Conference: Preparing Morgan for the Next Decade. I am delighted to share this meaningful opportunity with each of you -- our devoted faculty and administrators -- as we reflect on the unprecedented progress and momentum that we have achieved during the last ten years. More importantly, this valuable time provides fertile ground for thinking ahead as we collectively ponder the future of higher education and set the strategic priorities for the next ten years at The National Treasure. This conference comes at an opportune time when many sweeping global challenges abound in higher education, and Morgan has to be fully abreast of the challenges and opportunities that come with these rapid transformational changes. To assist us in understanding the comprehensive landscape engulfing higher education, we will hear from six of the leading voices today. Each of them comes fully equipped with a broad array of national and global experiences and achievements that will provide a sobering look into the competitive landscape confronting colleges and universities as we traverse one of the most challenging eras

in higher education. As we actively plan for our next ten-year vision/plan at Morgan, we aspire to be the first HBCU, or, at the very least, amongst the first, to be elevated to the highly coveted “R1” doctoral research status in the nation. We further aim to give true definition to our recent designation by the state of Maryland as its Preeminent Public Urban Research University. In preparation for such a shared vision, today’s conference serves as a platform to ensure that we, our institutional leaders, are of one voice and one mind and/or totally committed to advancing new instructional paradigms and administrative models and practices as we plan for our future and Morgan’s next chapter. Thank you for your partnership and for your dedication to our noble mission.

Administrative Conference Presenters Dr. M. Peter MCPHERSON President, APLU

M. Peter McPherson is President of the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities (APLU), a North American higher education association representing 242 public research universities. The association works with its U.S., Canadian, and Mexican members to support university research, advance college access and completion, and bolster university-community engagement. McPherson served in a variety of positions in the Ford and Reagan administrations. He served as a Special Assistant to President Gerald Ford. In the Reagan administration, he led the United States Agency for International Development (the U.S. foreign aid program). He later served as Deputy Secretary of the U. S. Department of Treasury. In 1987, he was a principal negotiator in the final weeks of negotiations of the Canadian Free Trade Agreement, the forerunner of the North American Free Trade Agreement. Immediately before coming to APLU in 2006, he served as President of Michigan State University for 11 years, where his work included vastly increasing study abroad participation, controlling tuition costs, bringing an independent law school to Michigan State, and increasing research.

Dr. Jamie MERISOTIS

President and CEO, Lumina Foundation Jamie Merisotis is a globally recognized leader in philanthropy, education, and public policy. Since 2008, he has served as president and CEO of Lumina Foundation, an independent, private foundation that is committed to making opportunities for learning beyond high school available to all. He previously served as co-founder and president of the nonpartisan, Washington, D.C.based Institute for Higher Education Policy, and as executive director of a bipartisan national commission on college affordability appointed by the president and congressional leaders. Merisotis is the author of the widely acclaimed book “America Needs Talent,” named a Top 10 Business book of 2016 by Booklist. He is frequently sought after as a media commentator and contributor. His writing has appeared in The Washington Post, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, National Journal, Stanford Social Innovation Review, Washington Monthly, Huffington Post, Politico, Roll Call and other publications. His work includes extensive global experience as an advisor and consultant in southern Africa, the former Soviet Union, Europe and other parts of the world. A respected analyst and innovator, Merisotis is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations in NewYork.

Dr. Ted MITCHELL President, ACE

Ted Mitchell is the President of the American Council on Education, the major coordinating body for America’s colleges and universities. Prior to coming to ACE, Ted was the Under Secretary of the United States Department of Education, responsible for all post-secondary and adult education policy and programs as well as the $1.3 trillion Federal Student Aid Portfolio. Prior to his federal service, Mitchell was the CEO of the New Schools Venture Fund, a national investor in education innovation. He has served, as well, as President of the California State Board of Education, President of Occidental College, and in a variety of leadership roles at UCLA, including Vice Chancellor. Mitchell was deputy to the President and to the Provost at Stanford University and began his career as a professor at Dartmouth College where he also served as Chair of the Department of Education.

Administrative Conference Presenters Dr. Lynn PASQUERELLA President, AAC&U

Lynn Pasquerella was appointed president of the Association of American Colleges and Universities in 2016, after serving as the eighteenth president of Mount Holyoke College. She has held positions as provost at the University of Hartford and Vice Provost for Academic Affairs and Dean of the Graduate School at the University of Rhode Island. A philosopher whose work has combined teaching and scholarship with local and global engagement, Pasquerella has written extensively on medical ethics, metaphysics, public policy, and the philosophy of law. She is president of the Phi Beta Kappa Society and the host of Northeast Public Radio’s The Academic Minute. A recipient of Mary Baldwin University’s Sullivan Award for outstanding service to humanity, Pasquerella serves as a member of the advisory board of the Newman’s Own Foundation and sits on the boards of the Lingnan Foundation and the National Humanities Alliance, as well as George Washington University Hospital’s ethics committee. Named by Diverse Issue as one of higher education’s top 35 leaders, Pasquerella is a graduate of Quinebaug Valley Community College, Mount Holyoke College and Brown University. Pasquerella has also received honorary doctorates from Elizabethtown College, Bishop’s University, the University of South Florida, the University of Hartford and the University of Rhode Island.

Dr. Cia VERSCHELDEN Author, “Bandwidth Recovery”

Cia Verschelden is the Vice President of Academic and Student Affairs at Malcolm X College. Formerly, she was the Executive Director of Institutional Assessment at University of Central Oklahoma, where she taught in sociology and the first-year program, and Vice President of Highland Community College in Kansas. At Kansas State University, where she was on the faculty for 21 years, she taught social welfare and social policy, women’s studies, and nonviolence studies. Cia has a B.S. in psychology from Kansas State University, an M.S.W. from The University of Connecticut, and an Ed.D. from Harvard University. Her book, Bandwidth Recovery: Helping Students Reclaim Cognitive Resources Lost to Poverty, Racism, and Social Marginalization, was published in 2017. Her new book, Bandwidth Recovery for Schools: Helping Pre-K-12 Students Regain Cognitive Resources Lost to Poverty, Trauma, Racism and Social Marginalization, will come out in September 2020.

Dr. Harry WILLIAMS

President, Thurgood Marshall College Fund Harry L. Williams serves as president & CEO of the Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF), the nation’s largest organization exclusively representing the Black College Community. TMCF’s 47 member-schools make up the publicly-supported Historically Black Colleges (HBCUs) and Predominantly Black Institutions (PBIs) which represent nearly 300,000 students. Under his leadership as President & CEO, TMCF has focused on creating innovative partnerships, increasing organizational sustainability, and advancing bipartisan advocacy. In 2017, he made history becoming the first sitting university president to lead TMCF. As President of Delaware State University, Williams enjoyed a successful eight-year tenure, increasing student enrollment and forging new public/private multi-million-dollar partnerships, grants, and investments into the campus.
