Hotel Revolution
Hotel Revolution, NY Nature is the organic, abandoned form that breaks through a Rigid, Industrial framework.
This
boutique hotel is located on an urban causeway turned natural park in New York City. The High Line Park,a connective ribbon running from West 30th street n the Chelsea neighborhood to Wet 13th street in the meatpacking district is the prime location. The developer of this hotel is striving to create a sustainably designed boutique hotel that will compete with The Standard Hotel and while defining itself as the future of hospitality. Many tourists are drawn to the Highline for its unique urban park qualities, which transformed the old raised subway path into an oasis within the bustling city. Taking inspiration from the High Line, and integrating principles of biomimicry and biophilia into the design for the hotel, the developer wishes to bring these qualities into the hotel lobby, blurring the boundaries between indoor and outdoor experiences. With this understanding, The developer is challenging you to create a design concept that uses nature as a metaphor and to develop a design strategy that implements this concept into the overall user experience.
Growing through the terrazzo floor, draping over the steel stair
railing, and growing through the industrial, black frame in the middle of the bar and juice/smoothie bar; nature takes back this space as how the world was intended for it to be- growing wherever it wants. Vines and greenery peak through the industrial framework which consists of the concrete pillars and red brick walls which resemble an old warehouse. Drawing inspiration from industrial elements, a circular staircase and wheel helped shape most of the elements in the hotel from the reception desk, to the bars, and staircase. Biophilia peaks through these elements sporadically, making it feel overgrown, yet calming. The warm woods in the ceiling beams and counter tops add comfort to this once cold, industrial space. As you enter the space, either from the Highline or the Southeast entrance, you immediately begin to feel the biophilic sensation through either the greenery from the stair railing or from the circular bar. A radial floor pattern helps you navigate easily and several different areas, directing you from one area to the next. Each space has its own different kind of greenery that peaks through, creating a unique, calming experience.

New York Highline
John is going on a business trip to New York City for a presentation he has to give. Being the corporate VP at Abercrombie & Fitch, he needs a place where he can work quietly, and also has the space to do so. Since he travels so often, he wants a place where he can feel at home and cozy. He also wants to stay at a hotel with a different kind of experience, since he is so used to staying at hotels where everything looks the same.

ELEMENT Hotel ROOMS
ELEMENT Hotel ROOMS EARTH ◊ AIR ◊ FIRE ◊ WATER
The main idea of the hotel lobby is to allow
nature to overlap with the industrial form of the building, but within each room there is a greater connection to the four natural elements of the Earth. There will be four different room types in this hotel, which will be water, earth, air and fire, which are the four elements of the earth. The decor of each room will embody the theme which it has been given. Be it a collection of soft blues and watery textures, or the smoky grays with the red color of a burning ember the room will have the color scheme as well as the layout which will make it feel like you are living in the personification of the element.
The hotel room was the second step in our
overall hotel design, the room goes with the hotel lobby. The lobby is about nature flowing through the cracks of an industrial frame. At first I started by trying to keep going with the wood grain parti diagram idea. But as the idea started to progress the lines began to look more and more like ripples in water. As the ripples began to come clearly through, I changed my theme from strictly matching the lobby to becoming a more raw and abstracted form. Which is when I came up with the idea of the natural elements, so I created four different themed rooms in the hotel which are based on the four natural elements of the Earth.

CONNECT OFFICES
CONNECT OFFICES The
Digital Graphic Marketing Agency
office project was something that my partner and I wanted to be unique and inspirational. When we did our interview with the clients who are the owners of the company we found out that they are both from Ohio, and we really liked the idea of creating a homegrown Ohioan vibe, mixed with the eclectic art scene of New York, where the office is located. We started with the image of a barn and windows and wanted to create our floor plan based on that. The space planning started to become restricting so we chose a new direction. There was a brick pattern that we found that would go with the New York feel, and that we would use the finishes inside the space to give off the homey, Ohio feel.
By combining the New York City graffiti art scene with the traditions of craftsmanship and the hometown roots of the state of Ohio, we strive to create a unique office environment that promotes innovation, productivity and team work through the use of a rigid brick-like layout, and a home-like separation of public and private spaces.

AMANDA AGE: 24 NEW YORK NATIVE
Julia is the extroverted, outgoing co-owner of Connect. She rides the subway to work, and considers herself a foodie. In the office her main priorities include networking with clients, and interacting, and having a hand in the design process. She primarily works on the front end, and is the creative mind.

Austin is more shy, and reserved, but very intelligent, and passionate about coding. He likes riding his scooter to work, and camping on the weekend. He also enjoys early mornings in the office, where he does the majority of his work. There he works on the back, business end of the company, and despite being shy, he is very personable, and approachable, and shows that by interacting with the staff every morning.
Amanda is a junior designer at Connect, and recently graduated college with a degree in graphic design. She rides her bike to work, and enjoys graffiti art. Despite being from New York, she still finds enjoyment in exploring the city. At work, she likes to draw inspiration from others, and is very collaborative. She is productive in her work during the day so she can have her nights free.
MICHAEL AGE: 32 BOSTON NATIVE Michael has a masters degree from MIT, and enjoys working in a creative setting, despite being more of a business man. He walks to work, and picks up a sandwich from the corner cafe every day. When he is not at work, he spends time with his girlfriend and watches hockey. In the office, he doesn’t mind working long hours, but enjoys a more secluded space so he can have private business calls.
