rowsing shelves, trying clothes on, feeling the weight and texture of a possible purchase—let’s be honest; online shopping can’t compare with the real thing. That means personal interaction, too: Morgantown shops win BOM for great selection and prices, but most of all for customer service.

Keeping Morgantown gentlemen sharp and sophisticated since 1963, Daniel’s has pieces for every occasion: job interviews, date nights, weddings, and beyond. Daniel’s also sells shoes, sweaters, belts, and ties, as well as women’s wear—and it has a proprietary line of WVU game day apparel and a State Pride line. 2908 University Avenue, 304.296.7202, danielsofmorgantown.com, @danielsofmorgantown on Facebook

BEST PLACE TO BUY A WEDDING DRESS

The Vow Boutique

Kristen DeMedici always wanted to own a bridal shop—when she was young, she made wedding gowns for her dog. She opened The Vow in 2013 and hasn’t looked back. One of DeMedici’s favorite aspects of the bridal business is the way providing such a meaningful service connects her and her small staff with their brides’ families and friends. “Brides have to order their dresses six to eight months out, so we work with them for a long time and get to know them on a personal level,” she says. “We just celebrated five years, and now we’re getting the sisters of the brides and the former bridesmaids of the brides.” The Vow is the exclusive vendor in West Virginia for Hayley Paige, Blush by Hayley Paige, and Essence of Australia. Here are some trends DeMedici is seeing for 2019: A romantic halter illusion neckline Bridal gowns with more color Detachable skirts for coordinated but more comfortable reception attire A ballgown comeback A bride-to-be can always walk in and browse the extensive selection of gowns at The Vow, or, better, she can schedule a free 1½-hour appointment for herself and up to four guests. But for the ultimate experience, DeMedici recommends The Vow’s Diamond Bridal Party—a threehour private shopping appointment after store hours for up to five people. The Diamond Bridal Party includes catered hors d’oeuvres and champagne, plus promotions from local businesses and the services of two stylists. It’s a fun and memorable part of wedding preparations. No matter how she goes about her purchase, a Vow bride will have stylists available for consultation right up through the time of her wedding. 4 Suburban Court, 304.291.7333, thevowwv.com, @thevowboutique on Facebook

BEST COMMUNITY CHAMPION

Jamie Summerlin Famous for his 2012 coast-to-coast Freedom Run that raised $50,000 for veterans, U.S. Marine Corps veteran Jamie Summerlin then came to Morgantown and founded Operation Welcome Home to support armed forces veterans and help them re-enter the workforce. He created the Morgantown Marathon in 2015 to support the organization, and the marathon quickly became a major annual event showcasing veterans, personal effort, and Morgantown at its September best. Championing Morgantown through great events has become a specialty of his: Summerlin now serves as director of major events and destinations at the Greater Morgantown Convention and Visitors Bureau, where he manages the Morgantown Marathon as well as the MountainFest Motorcycle Rally and other events. He also continues to serve Operation Welcome Home on its board of directors.

hether its food or politics or education or the arts, what gives a place its character is its people. Some surprise us, some make us laugh, some make us better people ourselves. We added a few new categories of locals to appreciate this year—and ended up with a surprising three-way tie. Read on to see who BOM voters love for making Morgantown a more fun place to live.

A junior political science major at WVU, Roark Sizemore started the nonprofit Pantry Plus More when he was a senior at Morgantown High; he and community partners have since spun it up to pantries in 10 schools and a growing list of side projects. This is just Sizemore’s most ambitious of numerous volunteer activities. He hopes to attend law school.

BEST POLITICIAN

Tom Bloom Long experience as a guidance counselor and a local office holder explains some of Monongalia County Commissioner Tom Bloom’s popularity, but his persistent efforts on issues like recycling and hunger and his tendency to call it as he sees it contribute, too. BEST BARTENDER

CARLA WITT FORD

Lucy Morrison Lucy Morrison’s escape to the U.S. 22 years ago when a relationship went sour turned to citizenship and a new home in Morgantown. The shy Irish native took a chance on bartending and has now been at Gene’s Beer Garden for 18 years, where no one can believe she was ever shy. The friendly, homey environment at Gene’s reminds Morrison of her huge family, she says, and Morgantown and West Virginia remind her of Ireland. To what does she attribute her great popularity as a bartender? Not her sublime brogue, though surely that’s part of it. “I just say it the way it is,” she says. “I think people like that.” Catch her at Gene’s Thursday and Friday nights. 461 Wilson Avenue, 304.292.1147, genesbeergarden.com, @genes1944 on Facebook MORGANTOWNMAG.COM

Best Chef Morgantown loves its chefs. With more than 6,000 ballots cast in this category, our three finalist chefs ended within a couple dozen votes of each other. Maybe that shouldn't surprise us each of them brings genuine passion to the kitchen

Marion Ohlinger, CHEF AND OWNER AT HILL & HOLLOW

As a 12th-generation West Virginian, Chef Ohlinger doesn’t incorporate “Appalachian” into his style—he incorporates “global” into his innate Appalachian sensibility. His 30-year career has carried him to more than 40 countries on five continents and to helm kitchens in places as diverse as the American southwest, Seattle, and backcountry Alaska. Over the past 15 years in Morgantown, he and his wife and business partner, Alegria, developed Solera Cafe, then Richwood Grill, and now Hill & Hollow, expressing a modern Appalachian vernacular that ranges from centuries-old regional dishes to the flavors of immigrants from Asia, Africa, and Latin America. Hill & Hollow’s artistic and business aesthetic is defined by farm to table, Ohlinger says. He sees it as “aggressively progressive”: “We don’t do popular dishes, we invent our own.” 709 Beechurst Avenue, 304.241.4551, @hillandhollowwv on Facebook

Chef Metzler grew up in Austria, cooking with his grandparents. Apprenticing at a local restaurant, he fell in love with the art of cooking and went on to culinary school. He studied music in the U.K. before moving to the U.S. and joining the Sargasso team. “I like putting contemporary touches on classic dishes, but also love dabbling in new flavor combinations,” Metzler says. Food is comfort, he says, and often brings back memories—especially for people like himself living outside their home countries. He loves seeing diners’ reactions to regionspecific dishes they’ve never tried. “At the end of the day, I think that's why we all do it—to make people happy. I can think of few industries where you can see such instant results of the hard work.” 215 Don Knotts Boulevard, 304.554.0100, sargassomorgantown.com

Mark Tasker, CHEF AND OWNER AT TABLE 9

Chef Tasker once told Morgantown magazine that the clean, industrial lines and floor-to-ceiling windows of his riverside restaurant complement his menu. “It’s minimalist and raw. It isn’t fussy. I don’t like fussy food, so that goes hand in hand.” Inspiration fueling the concept at Table 9 comes from both the chefs in the kitchen and the diners enjoying the plates they serve, Tasker says. He and his kitchen staff like to push their own limits and the limits of Morgantown’s culinary scene. “I’m a chef driven by technique and the art of cooking,” Tasker says. “I don’t believe in shortcuts when cooking. Most of my inspiration comes from things I’ve eaten as a child, places I’ve visited, and the ever-evolving culinary world.” 40 Donley Street, 304.554.2050, dinetable9.com, @table9morgantown on Facebook

Rim glass with flamed orange peel, add a splash of Sioux City Sarsaparilla and a splash of club soda, add five drops of Shrub & Co. blood orange shrub, and place flamed orange peel into the drink for garnish.

Mix equal parts The Botanist 22 gin Carpano Antica sweet vermouth Campari Serve with an orange twist. Bitter and delicious.

A well-rounded and aromatic sipper that will keep you warm and happy and “contradict” the cold West Virginia winter.

Craft ingredients bring out much more flavor in cocktails, Graham says. To his taste, Carpano Antica sweet vermouth is by far the best available in West Virginia. Spending a little more on that bottle will significantly add flavor and quality to your cocktails at home. The same goes for the base spirit: spend a little more to ensure full, proper flavor.

Dennis Gallon Cheat Lake Elementary

As an elementary school teacher in the 1980s, Dennis Gallon taught through school consolidation and the county’s transition from junior highs to middle schools. He later moved into administration, spending 10 years as principal of South Middle School and eight so far at Cheat Lake Elementary. He loves it. “The staff, the teachers and the assistants, the custodians, secretaries, cooks—they’re just all so totally interested in what they’re doing and want to be there, and they’ve developed really nice relationships with kids,” Gallon says. “Because of that, the kids like being there.” Cheat Lake Elementary tries to grow leaders one child at a time, he says. “Being responsible for who you are, making the best of the opportunities that you have, being a role model.” His part in it is to make sure the teachers have everything they need. Both parenting and teaching are harder than they used to be, he says. “But nothing is more satisfying than when you’re all on the same page and you all respect what you’re doing to make the children selfsufficient and successful and leaders.”

BEST PRE-K–12 TEACHER

Debbie Wise

Cheat Lake Elementary Every child who walks through Cheat Lake Elementary teacher Debbie Wise’s door deserves an excellent education, in her mind. Wise grew up in a family and extended family of teachers and always wanted to be one. After studying at WVU, she taught in Pennsylvania and Virginia, then landed at Cheat Lake Elementary for the past 20 years of her 25-year career. She’s taught all of the elementary grades except fourth and currently teaches second grade. Wise was surprised and humbled by the BOM win and attributes it to her genuine enthusiasm. “I love teaching and love to motivate my kids, and I think that comes across,” she says. She finds the rewards to teaching endless, but most rewarding has been the grown-up former students who tell her they went into education because of her. “If I can inspire a student in any way academically and then also personally in their life to go on into a career like teaching, that makes me feel pretty awesome.”

BEST LANDSCAPER

Affordable Landscaping Supplies Before plants ever go in the ground, all of the yard features need to be in place. That hardscaping is what Affordable Landscaping Supplies does. Carl and Mary Beth Sickles started the company in 2003 to sell flagstone, veneer, and other landscaping materials in bulk and have gradually added other services to meet their market’s needs. Today they employ 16 at the store, in residential landscaping, and in commercial landscape management. Their residential installations—“outdoor living oases,” in Carl Sickle’s words—include everything from patios and paths to outdoor kitchens and their specialty, custom swimming pools. “That’s what separates us from anybody else,” Sickles says. “Pools with waterfalls, aquariums—there’s no one in this area that does what we do as far as water features.” BOM voters agree.

BEST FLORIST

BEST CATERER

Coombs Flowers

The Lakehouse Restaurant

Even gray, rainy days can’t dampen a bright floral arrangement from Coombs Flowers. Florists at this family-owned High Street shop handcraft each bouquet and gift basket for anniversaries, weddings, birthdays, formals, and those “just because” occasions, and they’re happy to accommodate special requests that make arrangements personal. Local and nationwide delivery options mean Coombs’ fresh blossoms can be enjoyed across the greater Morgantown area and beyond.

You probably know The Lakehouse as that place with the big deck at Sunset Beach Marina, the perfect spot for a meal and a cold drink after a hot day on the lake. What you may not know—this is our first year with the Best Catering category—is that The Lakehouse is also a popular caterer for tailgates, company picnics, and other events. The Lakehouse’s extensive catering menu includes a wide range of cold and hot hors d’oeuvres and entrees like lasagna and other family recipe specialties.

BEST HOTEL

BEST DRY CLEANER

Morgantown Marriott at Waterfront Place

Massullo’s Cleaners & Tailors

When Marriott finished its gradual renovation of the former Waterfront Place Hotel in 2017, it had already become the go-to venue in town for everyone from college parents in for the weekend to organizers of major, multi-day conferences. Its location, convenient to the highways and a short walk or drive to dining and events, has long made it popular. Now, luxurious rooms with up-to-date amenities, a bar and steakhouse that are stylish yet comfortable, a state-of-the-art fitness center, and spa services make this hotel a true landmark in Morgantown hospitality.

Dominick Massullo opened a tailor shop on Pleasant Street in 1925. A half-century later, granddaughter Linda Cerone and her generation took the business over at its iconic location on High Street and, much later, opened the drop-off and pick-up location at Suncrest Towne Centre. A family commitment to knowing regulars and to quality service pays off: Massullo’s has been BOM voters’ favorite place for dry cleaning eight years running. Cerone plans to continue running the business at least through its hundredth anniversary, in 2025.

BEST MUSIC VENUE

123 Pleasant Street When “the Brick Row Building” was built on Pleasant Street in the early 1890s, the row houses’ prime location between Main Street and the train station and river docks made them the heart of Morgantown. Much has changed, but 123 Pleasant Street remains the heart of town … or, rather, of its music scene. The nightclub hosts local, regional, and national bands spanning everything from country to punk multiple nights a week. A great layout also contributes to 123’s popularity. The central stage is flanked by bars on separate levels, ideal for club-goers looking for a break from the main floor. The tin ceilings are reminiscent of the 1920s storerooms, and signs for the Underground Railroad and Nyabinghi Dance Hall recall incarnations from before owner L.J. Giuliani revitalized the condemned building in the late ’90s. In October 2018, a sold-out performance commemorated 123 Pleasant Street’s 20th anniversary—and kicked off another decade of great live music. 123 Pleasant Street, 304.292.0800, 123pleasantstreet.com, @123pleasantstreet on Facebook

It’s easy to wonder at the secret ingredient for success. Is it Roperti’s dedication to hard work and passion for pizza? Is it the crunchy crust and mouth-watering sauce? Or is it the generous sizes, affordable prices, and three Morgantown locations? No matter the reason, our tastebuds are thankful for Pizza Al’s. 2952 University Avenue, 304.599.4040; 1407 Earl Core Road, 304.225.2222; University Town Centre, 304.599.9555; pizzaals.com MORGANTOWNMAG.COM

BEST BBQ

Atomic Grill Under new ownership in the past year, Atomic Grill is still serving up the barbecue BOM voters have loved every year since we introduced the category in 2015. The sliders and Fried Green Tomato PoBoy get a lot of customer love online, but it’s the signature dishes—barbecued ribs, brisket, and pulled pork and the popular burgers—that anchor the operation. Non-pho offerings include chicken or beef satay, spring rolls served with peanut sauce, lemongrass soup, rice-based entrees, and bun—a rice vermicelli dish with a variety of additions. BEST OVER 30 SPOT

The Wine Bar at Vintner Valley Dedicated attention to customer feedback earned The Wine Bar at Vintner Valley a first BOM win this year. The Wine Bar opened in 2012 as a tapas bar but, when general manager and kitchen creative Kristen Thompson came on in 2015, she found that diners snacked on tapas, then moved on for dinner. So she made some changes—adding more robust meals, for one. “Our menu has a lot of Mediterranean/Italian influence, a lot of old family recipes. It’s an eclectic menu, too—you can build your own meal,” she says, touting the restaurant’s certified Black Angus beef cut in-house. Thompson also added happy hours. It turns out that, once diners give The Wine Bar’s happy hours a try, they like the atmosphere and quickly become regulars. “You can come in in jeans, you can hang out for hours—we’re never going to try to turn your table, but you’re going to get topnotch service.” Most popular at The Wine Bar at Vintner Valley are the stone-fired pizzas and the Black Angus burgers—and of course the wine list that has something for everyone. BEST OPTICAL SHOP

Morgantown Eye Associates Morgantown Eye Associates is the longest-running eyecare practice in Morgantown. When Dr. Thomas Stout opened his optometry practice in 1980, optometrists were limited to prescribing eyeglasses and contact lenses. Today, he says, they’re the family doctors of eye care. Half of his Morgantown Eye Associates patients go in for vision checks and lens prescriptions, and half go in for medical care for conditions like dry eye and macular degeneration. The three physicians at Morgantown Eye Associates listen to patients’ lifestyles, work, and hobbies and prescribe from among the hundreds of lens technologies for clearest vision and best comfort. Their optical boutique boasts the largest selection of eyewear in town, and a full on-site lab means opticians can make glasses in as little as 20 minutes. Dentists have it easy, Stout says in a surprising approach to advice about eye health: teeth hurt when there’s a problem—eyes don’t. “People wait until they need new glasses or something hurts. But by the time something like glaucoma or a retinal tumor affects your vision, it’s pretty advanced. We encourage people to get a complete eye exam every year.”

COURTESY OF WVU MEDICINE

WVU Medicine The WVU Health System has expanded across the state in recent years, and even over the state’s border into Garrett County, Maryland. In 2016, it became the largest private employer in West Virginia. The heart of the system is WVU Medicine and its flagship, 690-bed J.W. Ruby Hospital in Morgantown, where nearly half of the system’s employees work. Employees at WVU Medicine start with 18 to 28 days of paid time off annually depending on classification, plus seven paid holidays that include one flexible “floater” day so employees can observe a holiday of their choice. WVU Medicine provides employees with 403(b) retirement accounts— those are retirement accounts that are available to nonprofit organizations at lower cost than 401(k)s; it matches contributions dollar for dollar up to 4.5 percent of wages for eligible employees, with the potential for an additional employer contribution in years the system meets revenue targets. Some classes of employees are also eligible for performance bonuses. WVU Medicine offers medical, dental, and vision insurance and pays the majority of the cost: Employees pay on average 15 percent of the cost of their medical and prescription drug plans. They can also take advantage of health savings accounts. Eligible employees are entitled to employerpaid life insurance and short- and long-term disability coverage.

When extra time is needed for family care, WVU Medicine employees can take up to 12 weeks’ unpaid leave consistent with the Family and Medical Leave Act. For more time, they can request personal leaves of absence for up to three months. WVU Medicine Child Development Center for ages six weeks through pre-school, located on the medical center campus, can help balance work and early parenting, too. Also located on the campus is the WVU Medicine Wellness Center fitness facility; if that doesn’t keep employees well, they enjoy discounted medical services. In support of local charities, employees are offered a paid day of leave to volunteer for any of the many popular local causes included in the annual spring United Way Day of Caring. Unifying employment benefits in a growing system that ranges from community hospitals to a major academic medical center is a challenge, and one the WVU Health System has taken on. “We have worked very hard over the last 18 months to develop a system-wide approach to our total rewards program to ensure our benefit and compensation programs are market competitive and valued by our employees,” says WVU Medicine Media Relations Manager Angela Jones-Knopf. “We have recently aligned all benefits across the system effective January 1, 2019, including time off, disability, and retirement programs.”

Kroger Kroger consistently ranks among the top five largest employers in West Virginia. With 500 employees at its three Morgantown stores, it’s among the largest employers in Morgantown, too. Time off is a key element of Kroger’s total compensation package and varies by position and tenure, with store managers starting at 15 days per year. Medical, dental, and vision insurance are part of the package, as are counseling services. Associates are offered retirement pension plans or retirement savings plans, depending again on position and tenure, and the company contributes alongside employees, matching employee 401(k) contributions up to 5 percent of wages for store managers. Select associates receive bonuses as part of their compensation. Kroger associates receive employee discounts. They can also receive financial assistance of $500 to $2,500 for hardships due to an unexpected or emergency situation. Many readers of this magazine will be familiar with Kroger’s Community Rewards program, in which shoppers can earn rewards for participating local nonprofit organizations when they shop. Nearly 100 Morgantown-area organizations and more

than 1,200 West Virginia organizations are registered to receive donations in this way. Kroger stores famously host Salvation Army bell ringers and, locally, the company supports the United Way of Monongalia and Preston Counties through an annual giving campaign and food drives.

Number of Businesses

More people, a growing business community, new ideas—Morgantown gets bigger and better all the time. It looks better: In the past two decades, it’s seen a streetscape overhaul downtown, for example, and improvements in the Wharf District and along the riverfront. Sunnyside has benefitted 8,000 from a clean sweep of its major thoroughfare, with upgrades to its side streets ongoing. The Mon River is cleaner. And with all of that, our town operates better. 6,000 We enjoy a revived historical theater, miles and miles of rail-trails, and a closer relationship with the river. A better balance of owner-occupiers 4,000 to renters is reinvigorating neighborhoods. The national attention that follows population growth has brought goods and services we never had before, and major sectors of our economy—com- 2,000 mercial, health care, and others—have reinvented themselves in exciting new ways. In this Best of Morgantown issue, we recognize some of the growth and change that 2000 have made 21st century Morgantown more convenient, more healthful, and more fun. 2000 First pitch at Mylan Park.

Commercial Development

2006

The first shopping center of its kind in town when it opened in 2005, University Town Centre brought us national chains like Olive Garden and T.J. Maxx. UTC has expanded year by year with shops and restaurants, a movie theater, car dealerships, health care, hotels, office space, and the minor league Monongalia County Ballpark.

Between Mon Health Medical Center and WVU Medicine, Morgantown enjoys a tremendous amount of state-of-the-art health care. Mon Health underwent a major renovation and expansion from 2005 to 2009, including construction of a new tower and conversion to all private patient rooms. New services and an expanded primary care network. have followed. WVU Medicine has grown significantly since 2000, with new outpatient facilities and a hospital tower that expanded neonatal and other intensive care units and added 114 beds. And don’t forget urgent care. MedExpress launched its first clinic in Morgantown in 2001, and now we have urgent care all over town—a major advance in rightsizing health services.

The opening of The Gateway in 2013 may signal the direction of future development. It started with the Triple S Harley-Davidson, and restaurants, hotels, and retail soon followed. Just off Exit 155, it will be able to capitalize on improvements at Mylan Park that will draw users from a growing regional base.

In development now west of I-79 at Exit 153, WestRidge is a mixed-use development in five distinct neighborhoods. WestRidge Crossing and Commons will bring retail and medical facilities; WestRidge Corporate Centre, office space; and WestRidge Commerce Centre and Business Park, office space, and light industrial uses, and distribution.

2007 WVU reopens newly renovated downtown campus buildings, including Brooks, Oglebay, and Colson halls. 68

2007 Opened in 2009, Suncrest Towne Centre brought a more intimate, walkable scale to the “town center” theme. West Virginia University

2006

Since 2000, WVU has grown its Morgantown student population from 22,000 to 27,000. International enrollment has gone up, too— from 1,200 students from about 90 countries to 2,000 students from well over 100 countries. That diversity enriches both student and resident life in Morgantown.

2007 The university’s 2015 Carnegie R1 designation was renewed in 2018, ranking it among the top 130 research universities in the nation. It’s a prestigious classification that elevates the university’s profile, draws the best students and faculty, and improves prospects for major research funding.

The university closed its 2012–2017 State of Minds capital campaign at over $1.2 billion, vastly exceeding the 1998–2003 Building Greatness campaign’s $340 million. The donations allow for new scholarships, chairs, programs, research, and more.

2007 Mylan Park began in the 1990s as a dream of baseball and softball fields and quickly came to host everything from soccer and horseshoes to festivals and expos. An Aquatic and Track Center is in development now. Opened in the fall of 2018, the $7 million track facility features a Mondo track surface that enhances performance and decreases the chance of injury. Planned for fall 2019, the $35 million aquatic center will have three pools. The 50-meter competition pool will host Big 12 events. A diving pool will allow for diving from as high as 10 meters. And a community swimming pool will be open to the public. The facility will also have a fitness center and an outdoor splash pad.

Development WVU has undertaken over the past 20 years—renovating and buildng new classroom, arts, recreation, research, and housing facilities campus-wide—has helped to change the face of Morgantown.

2013 State apartments replace rundown structures on Beechurst Avenue. Shops begin opening at The Gateway.

2015 The Mon County Justice Center occupies the old downtown post office building. Monongalia County Ballpark opens. WVU’s Evansdale Crossing hub opens.

2016 Exit 153 of I-79 opens.
