A0 (A ZERO) FORUM IS AN APPROACH TOWARDS THE CELEBRATION OF ROBOTIC MOVEMENT INSIDE OF OUR BUILT ENVIRONMENT. THE ASSEMBLY LINE OF HENRY FORD AS ONE OF THE FIRST REALIZATIONS OF A DIRECTIONAL INFRASTRUCTURE THAT ORGANIZED ARCHITECTURAL PROGRAM (MASS PRODUCTION) ALONG A LINEAR DATUM ENTERING THE 4TH INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION, THIS HORIZONTAL WAY OF OPERATING IS NO LONGER SUITABLE FOR CURRENT AND FUTURE REQUIREMENTS OF CAR PRODUCTION. THE ARCHITECTURAL POTENTIAL OF THE ASSEMBLY
LINE NEEDS TO BE REVISED AND ADAPTED TOWARDS A MUCH MORE FLEXIBLE SCENARIO. IN ADDITION TO FUNCTIONAL NEEDS, THE MOVEMENT OF SELF-ORGANIZING MACHINE NETWORKS MUST BE TREATED AS THEATRICAL PERFORMANCE. ONCE WE ALLOW OUR BUILDING PARTS TO MOVE, THE ROLE OF AN ARCHITECT WILL SHIFT AWAY FROM ARRANGING PROGRAMMATIC FUNCTIONS IN SPACE TOWARDS CHOREOGRAPHING A DYNAMIC INTERPLAY OF PROCESSES WITHIN A BROADER SYSTEM.

HYBRID MUSEUM IS AN INSTITUTION FOR EXHIBITING AND PRODUCING ART. IT IS DESIGNED TO COMBINE DIFFERENT QUALITIES OF PERCEPTION, FOUND IN PHYSICAL AND DIGITAL ENVIRONMENTS. THOSE QUALITIES ARE BEING USED TO PRODUCE IMMERSIVE EFFECTS AND A RICHER SPACIAL EXPERIENCE FOR THE USERS OF THE BUILDING. WITH THE RISE OF DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY AND VIRTUAL ENVIRONMENTS, A SECOND FORM OF REALITY, OPPOSED TO OUR NATURAL HABITAT BECOMES SIGNIFICANTLY IMPORTANT. HISTORICALLY SPEAKING, MANIPULATION OF OUR SURROUNDING STARTED WITH THE INVENTION OF THE PANORAMIC PAINTING. ACCORDING TO PETER SLOTERDIJK “IMMERSION AS A METHOD UNFRAMED IMAGES AND VISTAS, DISSOLVING THE BOUNDARIES WITH THEIR ENVIRONMENT.” BUT SINCE VIRTUAL REALITY IS ON THE RISE LIKE NEVER BEFORE, THE POSSIBILITIES TO CREATE SYNTHETIC STIMULATION OF THE HUMAN BRAIN, HAVE BECOME INFINITE. THE WINTER 2014 RASHID STUDIO WILL FOCUS ON THE ARCHITECTURAL POSSIBILITIES OF A NEW CONTEMPORARY URBAN WATERFRONT BY REIMAGINING THE AREA KNOWN AS RED HOOK, BROOKLYN IN NEW YORK CITY. TODAY, THE 25KM LONG SWATH OF BROOKLYN WATERFRONT THAT IS ANCHORED BY GREENPOINT TO THE NORTH AND ENCOMPASSES WILLIAMSBURG, DUMBO, THE COLUMBIA STREET WATERFRONT DISTRICT AND FINALLY RED HOOK TO THE SOUTH, IS UNDERGOING A RAPID TRANSFORMATION DUE TO THE COMPLEX BUT PREDICTABLE CAUSAL
RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN REZONING, RISING LAND VALUES AND DEVELOPMENT INTERESTS. AUTOPHAGOUS HOUSE DEALS WITH THE CONNECTION AND INTERACTION OF SOFT AND HARD ELEMENTS. A SINGLE FAMILY HOUSE SERVES AS THE PLAYGROUND FOR TESTING VARIOUS CONNECTION BETWEEN THE TWO EXTREME CONDITIONS. SOFT ELEMENTS PERFORM AS THE FLOOR, WHILE HARD ELEMENTS CREATE STRUCTURE AND ENCLOSURE. LINEAR AND LINE LIKE COMPONENTS SERVE AS CONNECTING PARTS, TRANSFORMING FROM WALL TO FLOOR TO COLUMN. OF THE OBJECT ACHIEVED THROUGH THE POROUS SURFACE AND THE COLUMN VARIATION HINTS THE NOTION OF REDEFINING GRAVITY IN ARCHITECTURE. VISUAL FEATURES OF THE HOUSE ARE FURTHER ESTABLISHED BY TAKING INSPIRATION FROM CINEMATIC EFFECTS, FOR ASPECTS SUCH AS LIGHT, SPACE, AND MOVEMENT. THE BUILDING CONSTANTLY CHANGES AS YOU CIRCULATE AROUND IT, THUS OFFERING ANOTHER SHAPE FROM EACH POINT OF VIEW. 05 DIGITAL CRAFT THE WEEKLY SERIES IS AN ONGOING INVESTIGATION IN CONTEMPORARY FABRICATION AND DIGITAL DESIGN ALONG WITH GRAPHICAL EXERCISES. THE OUTCOME IS A COMBINATION OF VARIOUS SHAPES, GEOMETRICAL STUDIES AND FORMER SKETCHES THAT HAVE BEEN PRODUCED THROUGHOUT THE YEARS BUT DIDN’T MAKE THE SELECTION FOR

ASKING THE QUESTION WHAT A HYPER-PORT IN THE REGION COULD LOOK LIKE, THE IDEA CAME UP THAT SINGAPORE ITSELF, IS ALREADY THE HYPER-PORT OF THE REGION. ON A RELATIVELY SMALL ISLAND, IT GATHERS ONE OF THE BIGGEST SEAPORTS AND ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT AIRPORTS IN THE WORLD. SO RATHER THAN CREATING SOMETHING NEW AND ERASING THE EXISTING BUILT STRUCTURES, THE PROPOSAL IS CREATING A SWITCH BETWEEN THE THREE MEANS OF TRANSPORTATION: LAND, AIR AND WATER. LOOKING AT THE EXISTING TRAIN NETWORK OF THE NEIGHBORING COUNTRIES, IN PARTICULAR ASIA AND INDIA’S NETWORK, BECAME ESSENTIAL TO THE PROJECT. USING TODAYS EXISTING RAILROADS, IT IS POSSIBLE TO TRAVEL FROM SINGAPORE TO LONDON FOUR TIMES FASTER, THAN TRAVELING TO THE SAME DESTINATIONS BY BOAT. CONSIDERING A POSSIBLE CONNECTION BETWEEN RUSSIA AND ALASKA BY TRAIN, THE SO CALLED “BERING STRAIT CROSSING”, ONE CAN PERCEIVE THE FULL POTENTIAL OF A HIGH DEVELOPED TRAIN SYSTEM. AN INFRASTRUCTURE THAT WOULD BE ABLE TO CONNECT THREE DIFFERENT CONTINENTS BY A FAST AND AT THE SAME TIME SAVE FORM OF TRANSPORT. ONE OF THE MAIN PROBLEMS THAT SINGAPORE IS DEALING WITH THROUGHOUT ITS HISTORY, IS LAND SCARCITY. OVER THE PAST YEARS THE CITY’S MAIN TRANSPORTATION HUBS LIKE “CHANGI AIRPORT” AND THE “PORT
OF SINGAPORE” WERE BUILT ON ARTIFICIAL LAND. NOWADAYS ITS GROWTH TOWARDS THE COASTLINE IN THE SOUTH, HOWEVER SLOWLY REACHES ITS LIMITS. DEVELOPING THE CITY TOWARDS THE NORTH, TOWARDS ITS NEIGHBOR MALAYSIA, WILL BE ONE OF THE MAIN CHALLENGES IN THE FUTURE. THEREFOR THE “JOHOR STRAIT”, THE NATURAL BORDER BETWEEN MALAYSIA AND SINGAPORE BECAME THE CENTER OF ATTENTION. OVER THE PAST YEARS MALAYSIA REVEALED SEVERAL MASTER PLANS TO ESTABLISH BUSINESS CENTERS AS WELL AS SCIENCE PARKS IN THIS PARTICULAR AREA. THE STRAIT HOWEVER IS BLOCKED BY THE JOHOR CAUSEWAY, A 1KM LONG STREET, WHICH CUTS OFF THE CONNECTION VIA BOAT. TO ALLOW GROWTH OF SMALLER TRADING PORTS AND THE ACCESS WITH WATER TAXIS, THE CAUSEWAY WOULD HAVE TO BE TRANSFORMED INTO A BRIDGE. WITH THE TRAIN BEING OUR MAIN TYPE OF TRANSPORTATION, OUR PROPOSAL SUPPORTS ALSO AIR AND WATER TRAFFIC UNDER ONE ROOF. AS MENTIONED BEFORE THE BUILDING SHOULD SERVE AS AN ADDITIONAL PORT AND SHOULD NOT ERASE THE EXISTING FABRIC OF THE AREA. THE PROJECT TRIES TO STRENGTHEN SINGAPORE’S ROLE AS THE PORT OF THE REGION. IN THE MEAN TIME IT ALLOWS MALAYSIA A BROADER FIELD OF GROWTH AND ALSO THE POSSIBILITY OF CONTRIBUTING IMPORTANT INFRASTRUCTURE TO THE AREA.

LOCATED IN LANGENZERSDORF, NOTH OF VIENNA LIES AN INSTITUTE FOR WINE BREEDING AND WINE PRODUCTION. THE PROJECT IS CREATING A NEW BUILDING FOR THE „VERSUCHSGUT GÖTZHOF“, THAT AIMS TO IMPLEMENT THE EXPERIMENTAL CHARACTER OF THE INSTITUTION INTO A BUILD STRUCTURE. DURING ITS LONG TRADITION THE RESEARCH
GATHERED, CREATED A LOT OF THE FAMOUS GRAPES, THAT ARE CURRENTLY USED FOR AUSTRIAN WINEMAKING. THE PROGRAM WAS SET FROM THE VERY BEGINNING, SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH LABS, A FULLY FUNCTIONAL WINE MAKING VAULT, SLEEPING ROOMS, AND A WINE TASTING BAR FOR CUSTOMERS.

OXY_CLMN IS A ONE-TO-ONE SCALE INVERTED BREATHING SYSTEM THAT TRANSFORMS EXCESS CARBON DIOXIDE OF THE NEAR ENVIRONMENT INTO PURE OXYGEN. A BRANCHING HYBRID OBJECT WITH EMBEDDED DIGITAL AND PHYSICAL CIRQUITS READS/TRANSLATES DATA SUCH AS MOVEMENT AND ACTIVITY OF PEOPLE. INTERCONNECTED PANELS FORM ARTIFICIAL RESPIRATION ORGANS AND FEED ALGAE BAGS WITH CO2 WHICH IN TURN RELEASE O2 TO THE SURROUNDING SPACES. BIO-COMPONENTS ARE SUSTAINED BY INCREASING OR DECREASING LED
LIGHT SUPPLY. INSTALLATION AIMS TO ACHIEVE CHEMICAL EQUILIBRIUM IN THE AIR OF SALA TERRENA BUT ALSO SHOWCASE ITS MACHINERY AND BREATHING MECHANICS TO INTERACT DIRECTLY AND INDIRECTLY WITH PASSERS-BY. MOVEMENT AND SOUNDS OF INFLATING AND DEFLATING COMPONENTS, BUBBLING OF CO2, VISUAL INFLUENCE OF DIFFERENT MATERIALITIES MERGE INTO (A)RHYTMIC BIO-DIGITAL SYSTEM PARASITING ON THE WALLS OF EXHIBITION SPACE.
