ROBERT KESL

Appreciation Award

Mr. Robert Kesl, Advancement Associate at Morningside Ministries receives an Appreciation Award from Maria Wellisch, Vice President of Corporate Training at mmLearn.org, for his outstanding support and numerous years of service.

Shirley Jeffrey Best In Show

Morningside Ministries at The Meadows 87 year old resident Shirley Jeffrey wins Best in Show and First Place honors from the LeadingAge of Texas Art is Ageless Contest and Exhibit for her oil and acrylic painting titled “My Friend Tom” of fellow resident Tom Kirby. Shirley was born in Seattle, Washington in 1925. After high school, Shirley worked as a drafter for Boeing and later for a ship building company at a time when there were not many women drafters. Shirley soon discovered that she was fascinated with the human face and took up portraiture. Shirley states that “portraiture caught my imagination when I discovered that I could actually capture a person’s recognizable likeness on canvas. This passion has continued through the years when I studied with several noted portrait artists.”

GENE DRISCH

Gene is a true ambassador of not only Morningside Ministries’ mission of “Caring For Those Who Cared For Us,” he is also a true friend to all people with whom he comes into contact. Gene is always ready with a joke or funny story to lift the spirits of those around him. MIKE NOVAK

MEMORABLE EVENTS

Board Leadership Award As the current C h a i r o f Morningside Ministries Board of Directors and a member of the Board since 2005, Mike Novak has made a significant contribution ensuring that the organization remains on a sound financial and management foundation well into this century. Specifically, Mr. Novak had a leadership role in two important organizational initiatives. The first is the development and implementation of a strategic plan. The second initiative is a major fundraising campaign in which he helped raise a significant amount of charitable contributions from individuals, corporations, and foundations. Mike Novak is the founder and CEO of a construction management and energy solutions firm, industries in which he has more than 30 years experience. In addition to these great accomplishments, Mr. Novak has a long record of public service in the community that includes serving as a member of the County Commissioners Court, Chairman of the Chamber of Commerce, and Chairman of the Board of the local public television station. Indeed, Mr. Novak’s public service has left an indelible mark on the economic future of the San Antonio metro area. His extensive commitment of time and talent to Morningside Ministries will have a lasting impact on the lives of many older adults in the San Antonio community for many decades to come. Cowboy Breakfast at The Meadows Our residents love the annual Cowboy Breakfast at The Meadows. We serve the kind of breakfast that “real cowboys” only dream about...smoked sausage and eggs, biscuits a mile high and stacked pancakes ready for your favorite maple syrup. Live country music sets the mood for “toe tapping” and line dancing, while families, friends, and staff laugh and tell stories. Be sure to saddle up and come to our next Cowboy Breakfast in February 2013!

2012 Senior Games Walk A Success! Thank you to everyone who participated in the Texas State Senior Games 2012. Our Meadows resident, Rev. Harris Shinn, carried the ceremonial torch commencing the Games at Brackenridge Park in San Antonio.

“Congratulations on a very professionally executed Senior Games. This was a very positive first experience for me. From my vantage point, everything was very well planned and executed. Your volunteers and staff deserve a bonus for being so very friendly and helpful. They were outstanding.” ~ George Moore Senior Games participant

Spirit of ‘45 A special ‘Thank You’ goes out to VITAS for making it possible for the “Times Square Kiss” statue to make a stop at Morningside Ministries at The Manor during its nationwide tour. Our residents, many of whom were WWII Veterans and Spouses of Veterans, were truly moved by this prestigous event. The replica is a six-foot version of the twenty-foot sculpture in San Diego Harbor. It is now the symbol for Spirit of ’45 Day, a national day of remembrance honoring the men and women of America’s ‘Greatest Generation’ each year on the second Sunday in August. 3

Fiesta at Chandler Estate

Classic Car Show at The Meadows

Great food, great fun and great entertainment was had by all at the Annual Fiesta Celebration at Chandler Estate. With the Honorable Rey Feo at hand and the Fiesta King, our residents enjoyed a “mini’ set-up of the downtown flavor of Fiesta in San Antonio. We were so glad the weather held out! Let’s do it again next year!

On June 16, 2012, Morningside Ministries at the Meadows had the pleasure of hosting the 8th Annual “Classic Car Show.” In collaboration with the San Antonio Classic Thunderbird Club, classic cars were viewed by residents and visitors from the community in San Antonio. This year twelve classic Ford Thunderbirds made in 1955, 1956, and 1957 were on display. The cars were unique, highly polished and perfect. Also featured was a Ford Model A and a Dodge Viper. Our residents always look forward to this show because for a few short hours it takes them back in time to reminisce, “Those were the days.”

Fiesta at The Meadows With a loud grito, Spanish for a celebratory shout, the annual Fiesta celebration at The Meadows was off to a roaring start. In addition to the fiesta decorations and music, our residents enjoyed an international twist on Mexican food and beverages. Dancing and merriment rounded out the festivities. 4

Volunteering at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church Hats off to our Morningside Ministries’ residents and staff for taking time out of their busy schedules to volunteer at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church during Lent. From welcoming guests and serving meals, to cleaning and prepping for the next guest, Morningside Ministries’ volunteers gave their all to support this extremely worthy cause. “This prestigious opportunity to be a part of a worthy cause with The Episcopal Diocese of West Texas truly emcompasses our mission statement, “Caring For Those Who Cared For Us.” ~Alvin Loewenberg

Rey Feo LXIV Visits Richard Ojeda, San Antonio Fiesta Rey Feo LXIV, visited Morningside Ministries’ communities to spread the Fiesta spirit. Rey Feo Ojeda and his Court joyfully met residents at The Meadows, The ManorKaulbach, The Manor Healthcare and Chandler Estate. All residents received Fiesta medals and those with birthdays received Fiesta medals exclusive to Rey Feo Ojeda’s Court! Everyone had a great time sharing good food, laughter and that Morningside Spirit!

THE MEADOWS Good Luck Jil!

Improving For You!

Morningside Ministries at The Meadows is saddened to say goodbye to Jil Utterback after 23 years of superb service as Executive Director. You will truly be missed.

Morningside Ministries at The Meadows’ million-dollar renovations have certainly made an impression on our residents. Along with completely renovating our salon and moving our library to offer more spacious accomodations, new carpeting has been installed in corridors and select areas throughout our building.

“I started work at Morningside Ministries on May 2nd, 1989---my birthday! I have had a birthday gift that kept giving for 23 years. How lucky is that? I’ve seen many changes, much growth, have met hundreds of residents and family members and have enjoyed working with so many wonderful employee team members. My life has been enriched forever with memories to last a Iifetime; some funny, some happy, some sad, some heartwarming, but most of all the memories of smiling resident faces and the stories they have shared over the years. That is a true gift!” ~Jil L. Utterback

From new carpeting to new spaces, fresh paint to new decor, Morningside Ministries at The Meadows has completed our renovations. We would like to thank everyone for putting up with the dust, the hammering, and the drilling. We did this for you, our residents.

Upcoming Events Special Free Events! “Just as Jil is unique, we needed something that symbolized Jil’s qualities. Well....how about planting a tree in her honor? Yeah!...” ~ excerpt from Memo from the Redhatters and Friends, June 5, 2012

As Executive Director of Morningside Ministries at Menger Springs, Suzanne directs and coordinates all functions of the independent living apartments and cottages, assisted living and skilled nursing, and rehabilitation on this 34 acre campus. Her responsibilities also include hiring and developing staff, ensuring a sound financial position, managing the appropriate safety and care of all residents, policies, planning and procedures for Menger Springs. Menger House

The Happy Hookers meet at Morningside Ministries at Menger Springs every Tuesday. This group of senior ladies volunteer their time and talents crocheting and knitting blankets for New Century Hospice patients. These blankets aren’t just any blankets; they are given to people who are living out their last moments here on earth, so they have a very special meaning. Their hard work and dedication provide those individuals with small gifts of comfort and compassion. We’re so proud of what they do and delighted to share our conference room with such a great group of ladies!

Menger House

Menger residents stay in good shape with the help of Trainer Annita Edgar at the Wiseman Wellness Center. She is shown here coaching resident Autry Been on the treadmill. The new Wellness Center has been “the place to see and be seen” on campus since the dedication earlier this Spring. Annita teaches four classes a week in the Center as well as water aerobics in our indoor pool.

Cibolo House

Spending a little time with the garden boxes is a great way to enjoy the outdoors too. Our residents love tending their flower and herb gardens with great results! The spring and summer seasons are a great time for everyone to enjoy the outdoors, and our residents are no different! For some of our ladies, this was their first “fishing trip.”

Kendall House

National Older American Week was celebrated with a “Cruise.” We set sail on Monday with a banana split bon voyage as we “split” town. Our first port of call was Hawaii. We enjoyed fresh fruit kabobs and hulahooping. Our Day 3 stop was Mexico with Mariachis, margaritas, and Mexican food. Our next stop was France where we indulged ourselves with “French pastries” and beautiful pictures of the Eifel Tower. Day 5 was Italy! After a gondola ride we shared pizza with residents, staff and family members. We ended with some of our very own residents exhibiting their “pizza tossing” skills. 9

on-site primary healthcare services. Realizing the powerful impact that technology has in training family and professional caregivers, Maria created mmLearn.org that has developed over 200 caregiver training videos that have had more than 50,000 views in all 50 states and 77 countries. Independent of Maria’s professional career, she has given 13 years of service to the United Way. As a sixyear member of The University of Texas Nurse Advisory Council, Maria has brought attention to the need for nurses to consider Geriatric Nursing as a career. Maria Wellisch has made a profound impact on senior services and is most deserving of the ‘Distinguished Service Award’ as a tribute to her commitment to making a difference in the lives of seniors and those who care for them.

Leadership, support, and vision are the three words that describe Maria Wellisch. Maria has been actively involved in serving seniors for 19 years. Her personal commitment to aging services is exemplified by her desire to understand all aspects of care delivery. This includes obtaining a Nursing Facility Administrator License, as well as certification as an Assisted Living Manager.

Maria has demonstrated a commitment to serve the front line employee, best exemplified with the development of a highly successful career ladder program for nursing assistants. In addition, access to health services for uninsured employees has been her passion. She developed an employee telemedicine program that served 650 employees with 16

“I am truly honored to receive the ‘Distinguished Service Award’ this year. mmLearn.org was created by Morningside Ministries to serve the needs of healthcare professionals and family caregivers who work tirelessly to provide quality care to our seniors. It is an understatement to say that the lives of our older adults have been enhanced by hardworking and caring individuals. I accept this award on behalf of all CNAs, nurses and personnel in long-term care who strive each and every day to learn more so that they can provide better service to the many who are so deserving. I have been blessed to work with so many others who share my passion for serving seniors.” ~Maria Wellisch LeadingAge Texas 2012 Awards Program www.LeadingAgeTexas.org

A User’s Perspective

The years of uncertainty to find much needed information and answers about the elderly and aging are long gone with the advent of the internet. A recent “gem,” my word for an online website which I frequently visit and now is a staple in my online favorites is, www.mmLearn.org. This free website provides personal and professional caregivers tools, products and services in an easy to navigate online framework. The topics offered address what to expect when caring for the aging and the elderly in terms of health and life issues. Aging is a part of living. We often hear of people being in the sandwich generation. This refers to raising our children and being the caregivers of our parents or elderly family members at the same time. When we suddenly realize that we are parenting our parents as well as our kids, life takes on a new focus. With this focus often comes unexpected stress and uncertainty as how to handle all the responsibilities. Dealing with the elderly and the issues specific to their age group is the focus of www.mmLearn.org. This website provides articles, webinars, videos, blogs and online courses specifically for personal and professional caregivers. When becoming a caregiver

Many feel alone and think they are the only ones dealing with caregiving issues. Running the gamut of emotions they wonder where to turn. Once introduced to the wide array of topics at www.mmLearn.org you feel supported by having immediate access to pertinent and relevant information about elderly and aging issues.

A recent “gem,” my word for an online website which I frequently visit and now is a staple in my online favorites is, www.mmLearn.org. The website www.mmLearn.org offers what is often referred to as Just In Time (JIT) learning and training on a variety of topics related to caring for the elderly. Subject matter experts speak to us, not at us, in ways we can grasp. With clarity and understanding we become better equipped to deal with the common challenges of the elderly. Health issues such as eyes, hearing, the risk of falls and depression are just a few of the many health concerns covered. New and relevant resources and topics are often added addressing current caregiver issues. Whether perusing for ideas or information to stay ahead and learn about what to expect when caring for the elderly, the wide

array of user-friendly videos and resources offer answers to forward thinking questions. These free web based resources help to minimize the uncertainty of the unknown, build confidence through understanding and provide a constant reminder that you are not alone. Professional caregivers also utilize www.mmLearn.org as an ongoing resource tool to stay current and proactive around the issues unique to this aging population. I often visit www.mmLearn.org to gain clarity and guidance around caregiver issues. Whether sitting at my home computer in my bunny slippers or at the office, I have access to this online website that provides personal and professional caregivers information, insight and support 24/7. Knowing that no one is going to make it out of this life alive, as caregivers to family members we want to provide to those nearing the end the same love and dignity they gave to us when they welcomed us into their lives. I encourage you to visit www.mmLearn.org and see for yourself the insight shared at this faith-based, knowledge filled and heartfelt community all done online. Knowing this resource exists has been a blessing for many, including me. Hoping you find the same value and benefit. I invite you to experience this “gem” at www.mmLearn.org. 17

CHAPLAIN’S CORNER religion that god

our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world. James 1:27 There is a lot in our world that takes the form of religion. Some of it is theologically sound but much of it is as shaky as a newborn colt in its first stroll. Some base their religion on a belief system while others on personal inner revelation. In the NT book of James, the writer proclaims religion to be more than just a set of documents; it is about how

we live out what we believe. That is why for more than fifty years, Morningside Ministries has been living out the faith by “Caring For Those Who Cared For Us.”
