World-class garden open ONE of the world’s best gardens, according to the United Kingdom TV series Around the World in 80 Gardens, opens on the weekend. Di Johnson started creating an architectural garden among vineyards in the mid-1990s. It includes a 1.2-hectare Mediterranean garden, Italianate courtyard and native garden. There is also 1.6ha under vine with impressive borders of perennials, roses and shrubs. Sue and Daryl McFall bought Garden Vineyard at 174 Graydens Rd, Moorooduc, from Di and Doug Johnson three years ago. “Di is still involved, luckily for us, said Ms McFall, an architect. “There is now a sizeable Australian garden with many plants trimmed in an English fashion so the garden can best be described as a fusion of English and Australian, she said. Half the $20 entry price will go to the Rotary Club of Mornington, and half to Ms McFall and her business partner Val Wilson’s clothing company Moti, which will be redeemable on any item of clothing or bedding. Moti clothing, made from handwoven fabrics from India, mostly pure cottons and some linens, will be on display and for purchase. The firm donates a proportion of its annual profits to charities in India. The garden is open to the public 10.30am4pm on 16-17 November. Unlucky 13 teachers By Mike Hast THIRTEEN teachers at Mt Eliza Secondary College have been declared “in excess by principal Angela Pollard and the Education Department. They will remain on the payroll for 12 months while trying to find a job at other Victorian government schools. Those who have not found a position will be retrenched after the 12 months
expires. They will have a further three months (the formal notice period) to find a job before packing their bags for the final time. The move has dismayed many senior teachers at government secondary schools in the region. A teacher at another Mornington Peninsula secondary school, who did not want to be named, said some of the Mt Eliza teachers were “devastated.

“Some are near the end of their teaching careers but others thought they had a few more years in the job, they said. One of the teachers facing retrenchment is believed to be Susan Bollard, the 2013 VCAL Teacher of the Year. She was rewarded for her work with year 12 Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning students in an environmental care and sustainability program at the school. Her students won an

award for their 2012 work. Student numbers have been falling at Mt Eliza secondary for several years. The school recently issued an information sheet for a canteen services tender and stated the school had “a fluctuating population of around 650 to 800. At its peak, Mt Eliza had 1200 students. The canteen document stated “total
staff numbers are expected to remain at around 70 teaching and non-teaching staff. Some of these staff are part time. In recent years, many parents have decided to send their children to Frankston High School and Mornington Secondary College, as they consider the schools have superior facilities and extra-curricular programs.
