Calombaris sets sail to the Peninsula BY LIZ ROGERS
Get ready for this Peninsula people! Self-proclaimed “Safety Beach boy” George Calombaris is bringing his wholesome Hellenic diet inspired restaurant Mastic down south and that’s just for starters. Mr Calombaris has been a familiar face at Safety Beach for around 10 years. His children James (6) and Michaela (4) and his partner Natalie love the Peninsula lifestyle just as much as he does. “The kids’ eyes light up as soon as they know we are heading to the beach to see family and friends. We were down last Friday (March) and the weather was cracking! I mean, what’s not to love about it? I can get about without any hassles. Locals are friendly and the space… It’s a fabulous break from a hard working industry where it’s all about being busy and survival of the fittest.” And that’s what George’s life is, insanely busy and fit for a hard worker. There’s 17 restaurants, ambassadorial positions for Swisse, Bulla Dairy, Qatar Airways and Bowel Cancer amongst others, and then of course he’s co-judge on the mega successful MasterChef Australia on Network 10. I ask him if he is brainstorming while sleeping? “I don’t like sitting still and am always obsessed by something. This season’s MasterChef is going to be better than ever. You know you can feel it in your gut. MasterChef is like an extension of your own kitchen and everyone gets treated with respect. This one’s unbelievable and we have a lot of fun too.” “You don’t want to take things too seriously. That’s another thing I love about the Peninsula. Everyone is laid back, not too serious. Plus, there’s the best IGA on the PLANET in Dromana.” We ooh and ahhh together, “and Provincia is sensational,” he continues. So, here’s the Mastic deal. George has had two executive chefs scouring the Peninsula for the best local produce and he’s bought 19 acres in Flinders for winter time planting (think 90 per cent fruit and vegetables). There’s no set date for the opening of his mini holistic village (Mastic, produce and health retreat at Hummingbird in Red Hill) set on five acres in the heart of the Red Hill hinterland, but we’ll let you know as soon as we do! One thing’s for sure, George wants to plant roots on the Peninsula and the seeds are already sowing. “The Peninsula is full of fabulous stuff. You know there’s a National Park behind the (Hummingbird) site where Indigenous Australians used to smoke fish in the hollows of the trees. Radek Sali (his business partner) and I are keen to create a place where friends can experience food, lifestyle, health and happiness. I may even re-locate The Press Club…” What? Never! In the meantime, there’s the annual trip to Greece, television commitments, awards, cooking, family/friends and Peninsula produce and wineries to keep this Safety Beach boy very busy. He’s got the salt of the sea and earth deep down inside, so there’s no stopping him. MasterChef Australia season nine commences next month on Network Ten.

From Egypt to Mornington BY ANDREA KELLETT
Dr Hassan El Laithy takes a seat overlooking the boats at Mornington Harbour. It’s twilight sailing night and Mornington Yacht Club’s first Egyptian member in 71 years and the former Egyptian Ambassador to Australia has obligingly agreed to an interview with Mornington Peninsula Magazine (Dr El Laithy was also the first Ambassador of Egypt to the Slovak Republic and has held many other diplomatic roles in a career spanning 33 years). Hassan, as he prefers to be called among friends, is one of the yacht club’s newest members. The club has made no secret of its excitement at having such a high ranking international diplomat join its ranks – they posted a photo of him on their website in February, soon after he joined, welcoming him. Naturally, when a former ambassador chooses to live on the Mornington Peninsula after his tenure finishes, it’s something we can all feel a little chuffed about. After all, Hassan has lived in nine or 10 countries and it turns out he thinks just like we do - that the Mornington Peninsula is a magnificent place to live and raise a family (he and his wife have a 2-year-old son, Kariym, born in Australia). “I love it,” Hassan says when asked to share his thoughts on the Peninsula. “The package that the Peninsula offers is unique - the ocean and the hills, the greenery and the community. The Peninsula to me is a wonderful region both for its diverse farming (both hobby and large-scale
operations) as well as tourism, all of which constitutes a lifestyle region of great and wide potential.” Hassan also loves the Peninsula’s proximity to Melbourne, the shopping on Main Street Mornington and the people. His first introduction to the area was an official visit, when he attended the 2015 Victorian Agricultural Summit at Lindenderry at Red Hill. Many prominent agriculturalists, leaders in agribusiness as well as council and regional representatives were there. “It was my first exposure to the extensive opportunities and potentials in the region beyond the obvious appeal of tourism and beautiful
scenery. It came then as no surprise to me to learn of the subsequent launch of the Mornington Peninsula Produce Certified Trade Mark, which rightly recognises the worldclass produce from the region.” His decision to join Mornington Yacht Club was, he says, a spontaneous one and while he doesn’t have a boat moored here yet, he is passionate about anything to do with the water. “I love the sea. I think it’s an extra lung,” he continues. Hassan now works as a consultant on international affairs while enjoying a Peninsula lifestyle and, of course, time at his new club.
A First for Mornington Yacht Club For the first time in its history, Mornington Yacht club hosted the Victorian 2017 Couta Boat Championships over the weekend of March 11 and 12. Approximately 30 yachts competed in two divisions. Saturday was a great day of sailing, with the yachts racing from Sorrento to Mornington. Sunday the weather did not start off kindly with 30 knot easterly winds, lightning and storms, which delayed the start. However, by the end of the race, it was a 2-5 knot southerly and bright sunshine! Competitors from Sorrento, Mornington and Queenscliff yacht clubs competed for the titles, won by: Line Honours Division 1: Wagtail C86, Cam Miles; Division 2: Morning Star C157, Rhys Tucker; Handicap Division 1: Leeuwin C134, Phil Cooke; and Division 2: Lucy C31, Michael Golding. Mornington Yacht Club welcomes new members and offers beautiful facilities for sailors and non-sailors alike. LAST OCTOBER WOODLEIGH SCHOOL WERE ANNOUNCED AS THIS YEAR’S VICTORIAN STATE IMPACT AWARD WINNER, IN THE NAB SCHOOL’S FIRST AWARD. The award gives Woodleigh $60,000 in funding for our outstanding school-community partnership. We were selected from 12 Impact Award winners around VIC for our successful partnership with the Brotherhood of St Laurence and the New Hope Foundation, titled ‘The Homework Club’. This partnership, which is part of our wider Community Service Program aims to improve the educational prospects of newly-arrived refugees in the local Frankston area and to encourage the students from the
School to engage in community volunteering. The partnership was developed three years ago when the School identified the need to develop relationships with the community in an area of need; they called upon the Brotherhood of St Laurence to start The Homework Club to support Sudanese refugee students and their families. The Homework Club is entirely voluntary and runs for two hours every Tuesday after school. Woodleigh’s students travel to the venue to tutor, mentor and support the students who come from various other schools in the area. Our students have demonstrated increased cultural awareness and social responsibility from their involvement in this project and
students who have left the school also remain involved. There is even a waiting list to become a volunteer tutor for the Homework Club! Woodleigh School Principal, Jonathan Walter was rapt with the award. “It’s great to see the worth of innovative learning programs – which have both social and educational value, recognized with this level of funding. After three years, the Homework Club is no longer in its infancy. This award ensures that it will mature and grow as it should – as a positive model, which can be shared and re-applied to other Community Service programs within our School and the wider community.”

Co-ed Confidence, Girls Thrive at Woodleigh I was first introduced to Woodleigh School when my brother started Year 7 way back in 2005. I still remember, at the age of seven, looking forward to the day when I entered a school where the possibilities seemed endless. While my brother and I may have had different experiences once we entered into the school, they were equally amazing. This I attribute to one of Woodleigh’s core principles: equality. Woodleigh values equality, not just between genders but across all boards. This is a school where there are many and varied pathways to success, with the freedom for students to forge their own. My interests have always been very diverse, and this was supported at all times in both my academic and creative studies. Acceleration opportunities in Mathematics and the Sciences allowed me to expand my mind intellectually, while the Activities Program and Arts subjects allowed for my creativity to flourish. The love for learning that is cultivated at Woodleigh crosses all classes and curriculum areas. Teachers and staff understand the diversity of interests that students have and accommodate them. My own VCE was a broad and disparate mix: Maths Methods, Chemistry and Biology, as well as English, History Revolutions and Studio Arts. I loved every one and
had fantastic teachers for all.
I thrived at Woodleigh and I know that many of my female friends felt the same way. The co-ed environment produces driven, confident, and intelligent young women who know how to respond to the challenges of a co-ed world. Woodleigh’s sense of community creates a support structure that encourages high achievement, personal bests and hard work, regardless of gender or interest. And they are great people! Without the support of my friends … many of whom are guys … I would not have achieved the VCE results that I did last year. Always true blue BY KATE SEARS
The stars in his eyes have magnified since Mornington Peninsula Magazine spoke to actor Ajay Banks last year after his study in L.A. A move to Canada is paying off for the Peninsula Grammar Old Boy, with a new agency (MVM Agency), new classes and an audition for a small role in a Netflix series. At last month’s New Renaissance Film Festival in Amsterdam Ajay won Best Actor for his role in Always, which he also wrote and produced and which was nominated for Best Film. Yet Ajay remains humble and credits his team for the film’s success. Ajay channelled his grief at the death of his grandparents into Always. It’s fictitious but inspired by his feelings, and it’s so powerful in its raw aesthetic that you feel like you’re a fly on the wall as you get a snapshot of the worst time in a person’s life. “It was cathartic to write about this boy who was grieving for his mother and how the people around him were grieving in their own way,” he says.
Thirst for the limelight does not motivate this mature young actor, nor does financial reward. “I’m not in it for the money,” he says. He has simply never wanted to do anything else. Acting from the age of 15, his passion just keeps growing. With a strong desire to tell stories, whether via script or performance, he’s on stage to connect with others. Ajay also played Brian in The Happiness Curve, which was well received at the LA Webfest; it was nominated for Outstanding Comedy Series and Outstanding Writing and picked up the award for Outstanding Ensemble Cast. This international recognition was just that extra push he needed to make the move abroad. It’s a delightfully funny web series with heart thrown in too. Ajay enjoyed portraying Brian, who was a very different comedic yet intense character; a portrayal that was new to the actor. Production in full swing at Peninsula Grammar Anything Goes is a much-loved classic musical featuring the songs of Cole Porter, which first premiered on Broadway in 1934. Over the years, the show has undergone many revisions to the script, but the original humour, beauty, energy and quirky characters of the show have never changed. The show takes place on a cruise ship sailing from New York to London, and as the title suggests, once on board Anything Goes. There are complicated romantic relationships, mistaken identities, ridiculous disguises, dancing sailors, singing showgirls, and a ship full of eccentric passengers all with a story to tell. Just because Anything Goes is a classic musical, this does not mean it is an easy musical to perform. At Peninsula Grammar they are always looking to challenge their performing arts students and to provide opportunities for them to develop new skills. This year students have taken on the difficult but rewarding task of learning to tap dance. They have also been learning to waltz, which is not a dance style they are necessarily accustomed to. The dedicated cast is spending hours perfecting steps at rehearsals – lunchtimes, after school and at home. Many have also been exploring their comedic skills with physical comedy, timing, and slapstick. They have been making brave choices in the rehearsal room as they develop their characters, meaning there are plenty of laughs amongst all the hard work. Cole Porter’s music is light, bright, funny, and provides an opportunity for many of the School’s talented vocalists to shine. The harmonies and energy of the full cast numbers are so infectious audience members are going to have to stop themselves from joining in. Anything Goes is shaping up to be nothing short of spectacular. It sets sail from the Frankston Arts Centre June 1, 2, 3 at 7pm – tickets available from artscentre.frankston.vic.gov.au
Businesswomen and Babies Hit the Road BY ANDREA KELLETT
It’s on! Mornington Peninsula entrepreneur and Soar Collective founder Jess Jones will embark on a 2073km road trip at the end of May to celebrate Australia’s regional businesswomen. It’s called ‘The Rise for Regional Road Trip’ and it will see three businesswomen (Jess, Bridget Wood from Suburban Sandcastles and film maker Zoe Winther from Pickford Media) drive an Audi (Audi is their vehicle partner) from Geelong to the Sunshine Coast in five days. They will hold events in five regional cities and interview successful businesswomen along the way. And here’s the thing - they are taking their babies, Sylvie (6 months old) and Mabel (1 year old), with them! The goal, Jess explains, is “to acknowledge and increase the visibility of Australia’s incredible regional businesswomen”. The stats read like this: 3 businesswomen, 2 babies, 2073km, 5 regional cities in 5 days, 25 interviews, all captured on film by Pickford Media to create a documentary. Jess explains: “Okay yes, we’re a little crazy. But also, we’re really determined to reach more regional businesswomen. Not only reach them, but ensure they’re connected with

likeminded ladies doing the same passionate, incredible work in regional areas around Australia. We want to share their stories so that women who are contemplating becoming an entrepreneur or who are currently battling through the start-up phase of business see that they can do it too. Regardless of where they live.” “Whilst the whole ‘five regional cities in five days’ might seem nuts, we know how important it is to be able to do this face-to-face. Yes, social media and technology allows us to connect with people online anytime and (almost) anywhere. However, there’s something to be said about that real-life connection.” Soar Collective’s vision is to be in 20 regional locations across Australia and with 10,000 members by the end of 2020. “We’re growing our community so we can connect and support more businesswomen. And so they can connect, collaborate with and support each other,” Jess says. Soar Collective’s ‘Rise for Regional Road Trip’ runs from May 29 - June 2 and the road trippers have secured some impressive partnerships along the way - Caltex is providing fuel vouchers, Audi is their vehicle sponsor, Thankyou has provided nappies, wipes, muesli bars, hand sanitiser and water and they have venue partners along the way.

Toorak College Year 12 student and VCE Visual Art Prefect, Sophie Fairbridge, received the great honour of selection in Top Designs with her garment inspired by the Great Barrier Reef. Sophie chose to complete her Unit 3/4 Product, Design and Technology subject while she was in Year 11, which is an even more notable achievement. She says, “Its purpose was to show people the beauty of the magnificent reef so they would hopefully want to help save it from the mines in Queensland. I wanted to highlight the striking blue of the ocean and the intricate and natural patterns and shapes of corals and fish”. “It was very exciting opening the email that said I’d been selected. It is such a big achievement and just shows to me that hard work and a passionate approach to any task can be so rewarding,” Sophie says. Dailan Hatherley, Head of Visual Art and Technology at Toorak College says, “Top Designs is the best of the best, showcasing the pinnacle of talent from VCE students across the state. Sophie is immersed in the arts, her design is highly original, very well executed and worthy of selection in Top Designs. Every year Toorak College has a VCE art exhibition, where the quality of work is exceptional”. “To me, being selected for Top Designs means that I can achieve anything I set my mind to, and that through this experience extraordinary things can be created,” says Sophie. Adorable is the only word that can be used to describe Esther. This much loved and suitably spoilt Schnoodle (Schnauzer/Poodle cross) is the constant companion of Penbank Campus of Woodleigh School Early Childhood teacher and Mount Martha local Jenny Smith. She is also the recipient of birthday cards from her twolegged grandparents! Jenny was born in Hamilton but has been on the Peninsula for around 40 years and at Penbank for 22 of them. Esther is 13 and spends most of her time sniffing the salt air while sunning herself on the deck, chasing seagulls, chowing down on high quality beef, chicken and dry and watching the world go by. It’s a tough gig but someone’s got to do it! “She has a bed in every window,” explains Jenny. “But she sleeps on a bean bag in my room” and eats from a silver tray beneath her portraits hanging on the walls. “She’s well known around town and my neighbours baby sit her when I have a late day at school. She’s very social and well behaved.” You’ll often see these soulmates catching up with friends over a cup of tea and a lolly bag full of dog treats in Mount Martha Village, or walking on one of the leash-free beaches. They’re also at Schnapper Point three times a week watching the sun go down. “We know each other so well now. She can predict my actions,” Jenny continues. As soon as Jenny says “walk”, she hands Esther the leash, who then carries it to the gate in her mouth. This four-legged friend also knows that as soon as Jenny puts on her lipstick they are off on another adventure. “I totally love her,” exclaims Jenny. Right back at you says Esther, with her eyes, from the soul.

Finding your perfect diamond When you are looking for that special diamond, it’s often all about first impressions, and the thing that tends to draw the eye immediately is the size and shape of the stone. As the saying goes, “The bigger, the better!” However, whether you are buying your dream engagement ring or a beautiful occasional piece, there are certain characteristics to consider, which are known as the Diamond 4Cs. COLOUR The colour of a diamond is essential when determining a diamond’s value. The exception to this is fancy-colour diamonds, such as pinks and blues, which lie outside this colour range. If only one could bottle Carmela D’Amore’s passion for life. At least this Australian-born Sicilian woman, Peninsula resident, owner and executive chef at Sorrento Trattoria, mother and grandmother had the foresight to put it on paper (her 214-page glossy book ‘Carmela’s Cucina Povera’ published in 2015 is both an extraordinary life story and an authentic Cucina Povera cookbook). Carmela is perhaps best known on the Mornington Peninsula for her fine authentic Italian restaurant Sorrento Trattoria where she and her team take the best of her family’s `Cucina Povera’ (poor kitchen) Sicilian recipes and give them a modern Australian twist. The Mornington Peninsula Magazine team spoke with Carmela at this year’s International Women’s Day luncheon at Mornington Racecourse and couldn’t resist sharing this incredible woman’s passion for ‘the table’. “I have a purpose and passion in life, to awaken the power of the table in you,” Carmela explains. “People have forgotten the power of their own table.” For a woman whose family migrated to Australia with little, family (and cooking) is everything. As she increasingly observes
digital devices and busy lives encroaching on ‘the table’, the more Carmela feels compelled to do something. So, she created a Facebook page to encourage discussion about ‘the table’. “We are living in a virtual world. The table is where you feed your family and where you grow. It’s where we sit, eat, connect, converse, communicate, and collaborate … the four Cs,” she continues. “They are the legs and the foundations of our own table. I’ve opened a public group on Facebook called ‘The Power of the Table’ and all I ask is that people share from their own table.” She also gives powerful talks about the #Power Across your #Table and how we need to put down those devices and embrace it. There is great wealth and value across the table she says; we need to produce and activate it for the future investment of our families. Carmela also volunteers her time to cook for primary school children on Italian day, graduation day and more. It’s about community. “I want them to remember that ‘Carmela owns the restaurant up the road and she comes and cooks for us’,” she says. “Just to remember, that if I can add a little seed of family and heritage in those children…” And there’s more, newly appointed as the President of
Lady Chefs to the Federation of Italian Chefs Australia, Carmela D’Amore brings dedication, expertise and a passion for Italian food and culture. nathan Doran Nathan Doran is a 25-year-old professional photographer, born and bred on the Mornington Peninsula. And his job is, in a word, cool. He travels the world photographing the biggest DJs in the business (among them Joel Fletcher) and the big music festivals (including Stereosonic). His photography also extends well beyond the music industry. Mornington Peninsula Magazine caught up with Nathan in between stints to talk about his success. You photograph big-name DJs and music festivals around the world. Tell us a little bit about what you do? Basically I travel/tour with DJs and

really good mates! When you’re touring with an artist it’s very important to have a good friendship. How did you turn a hobby into such a big-time career at such a young age? I wouldn’t define it as ‘big-time’ by any means, but I have got to a level that I can be proud of. I guess I just had a strong desire to improve, but that comes naturally when you are really passionate about something. My career was just a succession of small stepping stones and I really tried to focus on achieving the goals I set.

All of the shows on the tour were great and we were fortunate enough to get some down time, including four days off in Mykonos! Working in the same industry, Joel and I naturally became friends a few years ago, so it’s just like travelling with one of your
It looks like an adrenaline rush to photograph the big gigs, where are you when it’s going off? It just depends what the gig is and what kind of photos I’m trying to take. I could be on stage with the artist, in the photo pit, in the crowd on a patron’s shoulders, or at the production tent shooting towards stage – all trying to capture the best shots. It definitely is an adrenaline rush when there’s an epic moment and you create a photo that captures that perfectly. Is it true you studied a Bachelor of Science and are self taught in

stage. I also do quite a bit of photography outside the music industry, so I’ve been shooting the summer series of food truck carnival events on the Peninsula, which has been awesome. What’s your style? I suppose it really depends on what it is I’m photographing. I usually like to have a strong use of colour and a sense of depth to my photos; I try to create a feel that’s relevant to the context and story of each image. I like my work to pop and stand out and my edits are normally pretty clean. Fav places to hang out (café, bar, beach) when you are home on the Peninsula? I’m no stranger to coffee and all-day breakfast in Main Street Mornington.
When the weather is good I always walk my dogs down to my local beach in Mount Martha and in summer I definitely try and make the most of living on the Peninsula! This summer I’ve done a lot of snorkeling around the Peninsula! Message to aspiring young photographers who might look up to you? Photograph what you love and enjoy what you do! It’s the old cliché but practice makes the biggest difference – you’ve just got to get out and shoot! It takes time to develop your own style, but just stick at it and everything will start to click. photography? That’s correct, I completed a Bachelor of Science at Monash University with majors in Zoology and Ecology and Biodiversity in mid 2014. Photography was just a hobby for me, so it was never really the plan. Balancing both became increasingly difficult, but as soon as I finished university I went straight into photography full time, doing a five-week USA tour with Melbourne DJs SCNDL. I have a strong passion for nature/the environment and one day I’d love to shoot for National Geographic, but I love music and the lifestyle of that industry is easier when you’re young. As for being self taught, I learnt everything I know from trial and error, reading articles, Googling everything possible, watching youtube videos and practice, practice, practice. While being self taught probably isn’t conventional, I definitely think it has its benefits. Tell us about some of the local gigs you photograph? Local is where I started – one of my very first gigs was at the Bay Hotel in Mornington. Recently, I photographed and directed the media team for Let Go Fest in Mornington, which was amazing! 9000 people watching RUFUS (my favorite band) perform as the sun set over the main

Not sure if you remember our story last year on Somerville pageant contestant MikaelaRose Fowler, but Mornington Peninsula Magazine thought you’d like an update on what this 21-year-old is up to now. When we last spoke, this driven woman was involved in the Miss Galaxy Australia National Finals. Twelve months on (after placing in the top 10 of the Miss Galaxy competition) she’s heading to the Golden Nugget in Los Vegas in June to represent Australia in the Ms Earth Pageant! Mikaela-Rose Fowler is part of a family of go-getters who like to keep moving. Having already held the title of Miss Westernport 2015, the Ms Earth title is all about what the name suggests – promoting a sustainable lifestyle and reducing human-kind’s impact on earth - and that’s something Mikaela-Rose is passionate about. “I’ve been in pageantry for a couple of years now and wanted to find a pageant that aligned with my values. Ms Earth, run nationally by Danielle Marsh and internationally by Rachel Fikes, is exactly the kind of title I’m interested in upholding. It allows me to focus on important issues like sustainability, natural resources, reusing and recycling. I grew up outdoors, always working and playing in the garden and I’ve always had a love for
animals. I suppose the connection with the earth has always resinated with me,” she explains. Pageantry work is gruelling. There’s the behind scenes of building a portfolio of charity and community involvement, attending events, pageant coaching and lots of exercise and attention to diet. Mikaela-Rose also has months of hard work building up a social media profile ahead of her. “Ms Earth is a week-long pageant. You spend your time connecting with other contestants from all over the world, and making sure your message and personality shines through. Then there’s a three to five-minute question/answer segment with seven judges. On stage, you are assessed on overall health and fitness whilst sporting swimwear, and elegance and grace while in formal wear. It’s very demanding.” So, what are the benefits? “Working on things that are close to my heart, meeting great people and making a change. Choir on song for first Asian tour Can you say “Llanfairpwyllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch” in one breath? No? Well, don’t worry, it’s not a requirement for joining the Australian Welsh Male Choir. In fact, only six of the Frankston-based choir’s 60 members can speak much Welsh at all, so it’s probably fortunate that most of its repertoire is in English. What is important, however, is a love of camaraderie and singing. And possibly travel – the choir is currently on its first tour of Asia, visiting Taiwan, China and Hong Kong for a series of performances including concerts on the Great Wall of China, in Shanghai and in Frankston’s Sister City of Wuxi. In Hong Kong the choir will take part in a joint concert with the Hong Kong Welsh Male Voice Choir. Since its formation in 1974 as the Frankston Welsh Male Choir it has toured overseas many times and chalked up several milestones along the way. In 1983 the choir was invited to join the Association of Welsh Choirs and became the first choir outside Wales to be accorded that honour. The following year it toured the UK, where it became the first choir outside Wales to sing at the 1000 Voice Festival at the Royal Albert Hall, and in 1988 it was invited back to the festival to perform solo - the only choir to have done so. In 2000, the choir travelled to Wales and England to yet again represent Australia at the massed choir concert in Cardiff. It toured Wales, Ireland and England in 2004, 2012 and 2015 and New Zealand’s North Island in 2008.

Closer to home the choir has performed at the Sydney Opera House and regularly performs in Melbourne and throughout Victoria as well as singing to assist various charitable appeals. In October it will join 14 other choirs performing in Wollongong as part of the Male Choir Association of Australia before heading off to Scotland, Wales and England in October next year. The choir includes members from Frankston and the Mornington Peninsula as well as Berwick, Cranbourne, Wheelers Hill, Noble Park and Dingley, and new members are always welcome. It rehearses at Baxter Village every Monday at 7pm, and the initial audition consists of simply singing Happy Birthday to determine which section of the choir new members would be suitable for: first tenor, second tenor, baritone or bass. About a quarter of the choir’s repertoire is in Welsh and the majority of members learn the words by phonetics; the Welshmen in the choir will assist new members with pronunciation, and there are tapes and CDs available to help as well. And to get a taste of what the choir is all about, you can also get along to Kirks Hotel on the Esplanade in Mornington on the last Wednesday of each month for Singing In The Pub, an evening of fun, fellowship and of course singing in the traditional Welsh style at 8pm. Entry is free, no bookings are required, and meals and drinks are available at bar prices. All welcome. Oh, and that tongue-twister at the top? It means “Saint Mary’s Church in the hollow of the white hazel near a rapid whirlpool and the Church of St Tysilio of the red cave”. Just so you know …

Wine Australia has selected 50 sommeliers from leading restaurants and bars across the world to visit Australia’s major wine regions, meet winemakers and experience the breadth of Australian wine. The sommeliers will attend ‘The World’s 50 Best Restaurant’ awards in Melbourne and visit the Mornington Peninsula during their 10-day visit. Webb Dock Changes Before Our Eyes Residents of bayside towns on the Peninsula might have seen a ship carrying an unusual cargo as it travelled up the South Channel on Saturday, July 2, 2016. It was the heavy-load carrying vessel Zhen Hua 21 with four STS (ship-to-shore) cranes standing high above her deck. Three of those were bound for Webb Dock, which is on the east side of the mouth of the Yarra River.
The container terminal is one of the most modern in the world, being highly automated. Along with the STS cranes there are 12 automated stacking cranes and 11 automated container carriers. The first phase of the development, which is ready for business, has one 330m berth and a 10ha container storage area, with an annual capacity of 200,000 20foot containers. In January the

When fully developed, the container terminal will be capable of handling 1.4 million teu (20foot equivalent units) per year. During December, work was completed on the western section of the dock. The new three-berth
920m wharf is part of the expanded automotive hub redevelopment. This new quay-line will facilitate Victoria’s automotive trade. In 2015-16 the Port handled more than 372,000 new motor vehicles. The new-look wharf complements the international roll-on roll-off auto terminal at Webb Dock West. A new pre-delivery inspection hub allows for vehicles to be prepared for dealers when unloaded from ships, which will reduce the number of trucks using the Westgate corridor. Also completed recently was the shared walking and bicycle pathway which stretches from the Yarra River at Westgate Park under the West Gate Bridge to Sandridge Beach. It looks like Greg and Sue O’Donoghue from the award winning Green Olive at Red Hill will be calling the signwriters and website designers, again. When you own and operate a venue that wins back-to-back state and national awards three years in a row, you have to amend your marketing material constantly. Such is the dilemma.
BY ANDREA KELLETT The owners of this stunning 27acre vineyard and olive grove with about 40 free ranging sheep and 60 chooks (even the entrance sign on arrival reads ‘drive slowly, sheep crossing’) have just accepted silver at the Australian tourism industry’s premier awards program - the 2016 Qantas Australian Tourism Awards, held in Darwin. It’s the third time Green Olive at Red Hill has entered and the third time Greg, Sue and their team have walked away with a national award (Green Olive at Red Hill won silver in 2014, gold in 2015 and now silver again in 2016). Three gold wins at state level along the way have launched this amazing venue into the Victorian Tourism Awards Hall of Fame. It’s recognition for a paddock-to-plate, family-owned business that was started from scratch in 2002 and now produces olives, grapes, herbs and veggies in abundance, has sheep and chooks roaming free, and partners with other local businesses to help grow and cross promote the Mornington Peninsula as a tourism destination.
“I think it’s doing what we do well,” Sue says when asked about the key to the trifecta of wins. “We’re always continually improving what we do and thinking of unique ways to engage all types of visitors.” What can be handmade is handmade (from relishes and olive oil to cakes and biscuits) and the O’Donoghues are also deadly serious about their desire for Green Olive at Red Hill to be fully sustainable. With a lake, a sweeping olive grove planted in 2003, a productive vineyard planted in 2008, veggie gardens and a stunning farm-shop restaurant, this Mornington Peninsula venue seems to have it in the bag. Yet there’s still plans in the pipeline for further improvement. Sue lets Mornington Peninsula Magazine in on a snippet, it involves a rebranding and a tag line that reads like this: ‘Farm the Good Life’. Lakeside Villas shines again, at Nationals! Linda Crittenden is literally putting the Mornington Peninsula on Australia’s tourism map. The owner/manager of Lakeside Villas at Crittenden Estate has accepted bronze at the prestigious 2016 Qantas Australian Tourism Awards (the tourism industry’s premier awards program). Lakeside Villas at Crittenden Estate placed third in the Best Self Contained Accommodation category - a pretty sweet bragging right. Lakeside Villas at Crittenden Estate qualified for the nationals after winning gold in the Best Self Contained Accommodation category at the 2016 Victorian Tourism Awards in November. For the hard working mother-of-two, it’s all still sinking in. She, husband Rollo and their two boys headed to the February 24 gala event in Darwin figuring they would enjoy the trip as a family and soak up the experience of making the nationals. “I didn’t expect this!” Linda said. “To come home with a place, against the best in Australia, is huge.” She’s also a first-time entrant. Lakeside Villas at Crittenden Estate comprises three fully self contained, 4.5 star accredited boutique villas, constructed entirely over the vineyard lake at Crittenden
Estate in Dromana. They feature king size bedrooms, large bathrooms, authentic wood fires, deep spa baths, barbecues on each of the private decks and more. Linda renovated and re-styled the villas after taking over as manager three years ago; she shops locally for her breakfast provisions; leaves lovely little notes for her guests; and she handles all the bookings herself. She’s a perfectionist and it shows. Linda was under no illusion about the quality of the field she was up against in Darwin. “I’m a one-woman band,” she laughs. As for what’s next, Linda won’t be resting on her laurels any time soon. She returned from her state win last year and launched a new luxury accommodation venue in Hepburn Springs! Hop along to Easter art show Artists from Melbourne and the Mornington and Bellarine peninsulas will exhibit and sell their stunning works during the Blairgowrie Yacht Squadron’s 8th Annual Easter Art Show. The show, which raises money for the squadron’s safety boat fleet, will feature work in various mediums, from photography to sculpture, by the likes of Nick Psomiadis, Harvey Neale, Vanessa Kelly, Malcolm Beattie, Carole Rogers, Anthony Clifford, Sarah Clark and many others. Throughout the show there will be a silent auction for such items as exhibited artworks, vouchers and products from local retailers, lifestyle experiences and sports gear. The show begins with an opening night cocktail party on Good Friday, April 14, from 7-9.30pm, and continues on Easter Saturday and Sunday from 10am-5pm and Easter Monday from 10am-2pm. Artists’ eyes on the prize Art Red Hill has extended the range of prizes on offer at this year’s show. As well as awards for Best in Show, Best Other Medium and People’s Choice, there’s the Acquisitive Prize supported by the Mornington Peninsula Shire for a Peninsula landscape under 50cm x 70cm, and – for Peninsula residents only – two $500 bursaries and a residency at the Police Point Artist Retreat. Aboriginal art and Queensland abstraction at Whistlewood
They’ve been called ‘speed dating with art’ and ‘an art lecture with real art instead of slides’. Curators and art historians Susan and Emily McCulloch’s unique Art Parades in which a wide range of Indigenous art is displayed in an hour-long presentation have now become highly popular events at both the McCullochs’ Shoreham gallery Whistlewood and in other venues.
The 60+ works in the Art Parade which opens their Autumn Salon exhibition at Easter will relate some of the creation myths of the country that are the basis for much of today’s Indigenous art, as well as featuring the significance of colour in Aboriginal art. Featured also in both the Parade and the Salon are new works by Far North Queensland abstractionist Claudine Marzik. “Claudine’s a Swiss-Australian artist whose work I’ve admired for a number of years since I first saw it in leading public gallery exhibitions in Queensland,” says Susan McCulloch. “Claudine’s art derives from the Western tradition of abstraction and
her subjects are strongly environmentally and landscape based. Some are gentle reflections of her concerns of issues such as climate change as well as the evolution of the rainforests and rocky escarpments and the detail of trees. A number are also very textural and her sensitive portrayals make her paintings ideal companions for Indigenous art.” “We had a great reaction to Claudine’s work in our summer landscape exhibition

It has been a busy few years since Malcura released their debut EP ‘Flamenco Metal’. The trio have been busking extensively ever since, honing their craft in Melbourne’s CBD alongside well-known acts such as The Pierce Brothers and Tash Sultana. This has allowed the trio to steadily build their fanbase, and also develop their original sound. A chance appearance on stage at The Palais Theatre with Mexican guitar heroes Rodrigo y Gabriela became one of the acts biggest career highlights so far. Malcura have also performed at a number of festivals, including Wallaby Creek (QLD), Bendigo Blues and Roots, Mt
Eliza Music Festival, St Kilda Festival; and are scheduled to appear at the 2017 Tanglewood Music Festival and Illawarra Folk Festival (NSW). ‘Malcura’, the band’s self-titled debut album, was released in February 2016, with a launch show on the Federation Square main stage. The album has since been nominated for the award of the 2016 ‘Best Global/ Reggae Album’ by The Age Music

Just to let you know, the Red Hill Bakery in conjunction with local muso Marty NelsonWilliams put on a grinding show with UK boogie woogie piano legend Ben Walters early on in March. Ben Walters has jammed with the best of them - think Chuck Berry, Rolling Stones, Bobby Womack, Jools Holland and Jerry Lee Lewis to name a few. The bakery was buzzing with world class music played for 130 (seated) lucky punters. “The acoustics in the gallery are great and I do love an intimate venue where you can get in close to the action. Ben could have played for six hours straight after local songsmith Paul Dillon’s sweet intro set. Ben’s 16-year-old son Tom played sax like a legend, and the Red Hill Baker Boys joined in for a wild closing set. It was so good. Tegan’s amazing year of growth Tegan Mawdsley, 18, a SkillsPlus Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning graduate, talks about what led her back to study. Everyone is raving about leaving school, but for me I am leaving my family. Training organisation SkillsPlus was the last resort for me. I had been out of school for 12 months because I had been raising my three younger siblings. Every day I woke up, got them ready for school, cleaned, cooked, got them ready for bed, cleaned a bit more and went to bed myself. Obviously there was no time for school, so I dropped out. I fell into a really bad state of depression because there was no time to go see friends and I was constantly at home. In October 2014 I moved out of my mother’s house and in with other relatives. I started seeing Mel at SkillsPlus Employment Services who worked hard to get me into SkillsPlus Youth Education. I remember how scared I was on my first day and how I thought I wouldn’t make any friends. I was so wrong. Everyone was amazingly nice to me and it only got better. Later we started volunteering at Nepean School. I can’t even describe the joy I felt when we went there. That place just brings so much happiness to everyone’s lives. To see how happy the students were even when struggling with everything is incredible. I started to imagine working there with the amazing young people with a disability. It made me decide to enrol in a Certificate IV in Disability Services with BRACE, which I have now completed. It has been a roller-coaster of emotions,
but I would not change a thing. I have never met a more amazing group of people. Without them I wouldn’t be the person I am today. I am leaving SkillsPlus and BRACE with a Year 12 pass, a Certificate IV in Disability Services (CHC43115), a new job and an incredible family.

The NBN is now available on parts of the Mornington Peninsula, but while some telcos are advising clients they will have to change their phone system when the NBN is rolled out, most phone systems don’t need to be replaced. How to use events to grow your business I’m assuming that because you have your own business, you’re pretty good at something, right? Whether it’s service based or perhaps a handmade product and many things in between, holding an event for your customers (potential or existing) is a great tool for business growth for many reasons. If you’re an expert in something, why not share it around? Teach your craft, show off your talent, help people. Holding an event or workshop gives you: 1. The opportunity to share your knowledge 2. The chance to get to know your customers (and for them to get to know you!) and introduce yourself to prospective customers 3. Hospital undergoes major upgrade

Work has started on a $9.7 million refurbishment of St John of God Frankston Rehabilitation Hospital to deliver new and improved patient accommodation and amenities. The work, which is expected to be completed early next year, includes
converting three and four-bed wards to two-bed wards; increasing the number of single rooms; refurbishing patient rooms and ensuites; and improving front entrance access for patients and vehicles. A new kiosk, lounge area, three additional consulting rooms, a chapel and an adjoining multipurpose meeting room will all form part of the new-look foyer. Chief executive officer Sally Faulkner
said the most critical component of the refurbishment was increasing the number of single rooms to provide patients with greater comfort and privacy during their recovery. “The design will also give us the flexibility to increase the bed capacity as required to meet the demands for our services,” Sally said. “While this is a comprehensive and detailed refurbishment, it will occur in
stages so that we minimise the impact on our inpatient and outpatient services. Hot Springs steps up for mental health Peninsula Hot Springs has joined forces with Peninsula-based community mental health support organisation Mentis Assist to promote better mental health on the Mornington Peninsula. The alliance was celebrated on March 15 at Peninsula Hot Springs and officially launched via a video message from Flinders federal MP and Health Minister Greg Hunt. The celebration included speeches from the two CEOs and a former Mentis Assist client turned staff member, plus an appearance by actor/filmmaker Steve Bastoni, who showed his award winning short film on mental health ‘The Gift’. Peninsula Hot Springs founder and CEO Charles Davidson described the partnership as “a natural connection, one which we hope encourages all health and wellness tourism operations to further consider their place in, and contribution to, their region”. “At Peninsula Hot Springs we measure and
define our success as a major health and wellbeing destination by the opportunities we create for people to connect with the environment, each other, their community and themselves,” he said. It is estimated that 45 per cent of people on the Mornington Peninsula will experience a mental health disorder in their lifetime. “The partnership with Mentis Assist enables us to support the important work they do in our community; to raise awareness of the significant mental health issues in our region and country; and to learn how we are able to do more for those affected by mental health issues,” Mr Davidson explained. Initial Mentis Assist and Peninsula Hot Springs partnership projects include specific wellness activities created at Peninsula Hot Springs for community members affected by mental ill-health including yoga/meditation sessions and mindful hot springs bathing experiences. For the past 12 years, Andre Kogut has been producing one of the nation’s best fermented foods at Blue Bay Cheese in Mornington. We should know as we showcased their new business in our first issue! Kefir is an amazing source of probiotics, and while it is only in the past few years that the world has caught up with the benefits of this fermented milk, Andre has been aware of its health-giving properties for years. taught him how to make it in the Ukrainian countryside he grew up in; she drank it every day and lived to 89. “She was a fit woman right until the very end,” he said. Luckily for traditional pizza enthusiasts, Bronx Napoli Pizzeria 1999 has made this a reality by importing a Marana Forni wood-fired oven from Verona. With pizza master and Italian-born Alessandro (Alex) D’Auria at the helm, this restaurant has quickly become the authentic go-to Naples experience. “This is what I do and I’m the best at what I do,” Alex says. Alex previously worked at Melbourne’s Pizze e Fichi, which was awarded Gourmet Traveller’s ‘Best Australian Pizza’, and he even guest starred on SBS’s Italian Food Safari. Alex summarises the restaurant as a “$25 trip to Naples”. The atmosphere is authentic and laidback - just like you’d experience in a Naples pizzeria – and
the pizzas themselves could have come straight from that city’s finest pizzeria. The secret to Alex’s delectable creations is a slow levitation process and then 90 seconds in the wood-fired oven at no less than 400C. On-tap wine is popular in Italy, and it’s now available at Bronx. Do not assume, however, that on-tap means low quality, in fact, it’s high-quality wine imported from the great wine regions of Italy. Landmark high-rise could trigger property boom
A landmark residential project proposed for Frankston could trigger a property boom.
Peninsula Project Group says its Allure Bayside development, at 10-12 Davey St, will be first high-rise residential development in the Bayside/Mornington Peninsula region, and with the area primed for growth it’s unlikely to be the last. The 14-storey development will include 77 one, two and three-bedroom luxury apartments and penthouses above a single-level podium incorporating existing heritage buildings, with a four-level basement carpark below. heritage façade will contain a gymnasium, golf and yoga room, the other incorporating café space with a garden terrace. “The hero of these apartments is the bay views from the Melbourne CBD to Sorrento,” a PPG spokesman said. “This sets Allure Bayside apart from other similar priced low-rise apartment buildings in the area. “Now is the time to invest in Frankston property, while property prices are still low, rental demand is high and property value is only just commencing its incline. The trick is to invest in areas that have not yet experienced
their property ‘boom’. This is where property owners will make significant returns.” Forty-five per cent of the apartments have already been sold, mostly to owner-occupiers. Construction is forecast to start in May. You can also use local and native plants species to compliment your fruit trees. While growing deciduous fruit trees and climbers can provide a lot of fruit over the warmer months, let’s not forget about the other fruit trees you can grow. Avocados, tamarillos, and a range of citrus fruits could all occupy some room in your garden and can be highly productive if cared for. And if you have a family there are few things more nourishing for young bodies and souls than to forage in a garden full of goodness. To be able to walk out your door and grab a basketful of fresh, juicy fruit is one of the great pleasures of edible gardening. So replace that old camellia and lawn with something that is going to be more productive for you and have a think about other spaces in your yard that can be used to grow more fruiting varieties.
