IN A GOLDEN HIGHLIGHT DURING ITS 50TH ANNIVERSARY YEAR, PENINSULA SURFRIDERS CLUB HAS POWERED ITS WAY INTO THE AUSTRALIAN BOARDRIDERS BATTLE NATIONAL FINAL AFTER WINNING THE ABB VICTORIAN QUALIFICATION ROUND AT PHILLIP ISLAND’S SMITH BEACH IN OCTOBER.

The ABB is the ultimate test for club surfing talent across the nation, with PSC's finest set to take on Australia's top surfing clubs at the legendary Burleigh Heads break on the Gold Coast in March.

PSC president Sean McDevitt revealed the fire behind the club’s success. "The team has been training hard behind the scenes through rain, hail or shine in preparation for the event," he said. "With our experience gained from last year's national final, our team was steady and disciplined under pressure and able to execute the plan for the win."

The qualifying squad packs serious punch across all divisions. In the over-18 male line-up, Lachy McDonald, Caiden Fowler, Pedro Lani, Joel Wookey

and Lucas Hickson (pictured) bring the power. The women's contingent features the unstoppable trio of Ava Holland, Sophie Wilkinson and Sara Hickson, who Sean notes are "the current three-time Victorian champions". Rising stars Arieh Patterson, Tarvi Woods and George Everist round out the junior squad, proving the future of Peninsula surfing burns bright.

The club's vibrant community spirit also didn't go unnoticed at the qualifiers, with PSC claiming the Jim Beam Club Spirit award. "Our club is different because we don't represent a beach or a town but a whole shire. Our members come from all over the Peninsula and our club provides a place for our members to compete,

connect with other passionate surfers and make lifelong friends."

This renaissance didn't happen overnight, however. "This year's victory was a culmination of eight years of building a team culture and the organic improvement of our younger surfers over that time period," Sean said, highlighting the mentorship of team captain Lachy McDonald, Caiden Fowler and coach Joel Reid in shaping the next generation.

The road to the nationals demands grit. Beyond mastering the waves, competitors must conquer the gruelling Burleigh Hill sprint. "The national final is home to the Burleigh Hill, where surfers have to run a 400m sprint to tag the next teammate in."

For the Peninsula's surfing community, this victory resonates deeply. "It's significant to our club and its members along with the greater local surfing community, particularly on the southern end of the Peninsula,” Sean said. “I think a national championship would be the announcement to the Australian surf community of the incredible talent we have on the Peninsula. It would be the biggest moment in our club and surfing community’s history."

With 50 years of surfing heritage behind them and the promise of future glory, PSC's talented squad is ready to make waves on the national stage. As they say in surfing circles, timing is everything – and PSC's moment to shine has never looked closer.

WITH MARKER PENS IN HAND AND A FAT DRAWING PAD AT THE READY, PRUE PITTOCK’S ARTISTIC JOURNEY BEGAN LONG BEFORE SHE BECAME AN AWARD-WINNING CHILDREN'S BOOK ILLUSTRATOR.

After finishing school, Prue studied art and design, where she discovered her love for illustration. A brief venture into advertising followed, after which she worked for a company designing record covers alongside her sister. It was in this job that a path to picture books first emerged, as working with just two colours helped develop her signature style. These days, Prue can most often be found in her garden studio in Dromana, where the Peninsula's bushland and wildlife spark her creativity.

“I think you'd call my style naive simplicity with a touch of quirky,” said Prue, whose distinctive illustrations have earned her recognition from the Children's Book Council of Australia. Her illustrations for Matthew Flinders: Adventures on Leaky Ships by Carole Wilkinson caught the CBCA's eye, earning an Eve Pownall Award shortlisting. Another nod from the CBCA came for River to Bay, cementing her place in the Australian children's literature scene.

While her first children's book commission, The Lilly-Pilly by Mavis Thorpe Clark, came early in her career in 1979, it wasn't until 2016 that Prue dived headfirst into the world of picture books. “I enrolled in a picture book illustration course at the Council of Adult Education to sharpen up my skills,” she said. A game-changing visit to Melbourne's KidLitVic conference followed, landing her four book deals in quick succession.

Gone are the days of starting afresh when a watercolour wash goes wrong. “Nowadays I mostly use digital because it gives me the freedom to work from just about anywhere in the world,” Prue said. But old habits die hard – every illustration still begins life as a pencil sketch before making its digital transformation.

The process of bringing a story to life begins when Prue receives a manuscript from her agent or publisher. “If I like the story, I will submit storyboard roughs to the editor and art director for approval,” she said.

Working closely with the creative team, she spends several months developing the look and narrative flow. “It is interesting to know that at this stage of the project I have very little or no contact with the author.”

Last year marked a special personal achievement with the publication of 10 Baby Bunnies, Prue's debut as both author and illustrator. “Writing and illustrating has been a lifelong dream,” she said. “I wouldn't call myself a writer but I loved the freedom of writing and illustrating my own story.”

Prue is currently keeping busy working on a magic painting book, a three-book series for babies, and a picture book with Walker Books Australia, due for release next year. From her garden studio in Dromana, her quirky characters and distinctive style are charming their way across continents.

A bright splash

of community spirit

MATT ADNATE TEMPORARILY SWAPPED HIS TRADEMARK PORTRAITS FOR SOMETHING UNEXPECTED ON EIGHTH AVE IN ROSEBUD. THE EXTERIOR WALL OF THE GATHERING TREE COLLECTIVE – A COMMUNITY HUB THAT COMBINES A SECOND-HAND SHOP WITH SPACES FOR LOCAL SUPPORT SERVICES AND SOCIAL CONNECTION –NOW DISPLAYS A MURAL BURSTING WITH COLOUR AND MOVEMENT.

It's a departure for the acclaimed artist, who just picked up the 2024 Archibald Packing Room Prize for his photorealistic work. This new collaboration marks the first anniversary of the collective, bringing together an unlikely alliance: Matt's urban art credentials, Bayview Care's community focus, Mornington Peninsula Shire's vision, and the Bunurong Land Council's cultural guidance. The project, funded through shire placemaking grants and local donations, has transformed a forgettable corner of Point Nepean Rd into a conversation starter.

The design emerged through careful collaboration between Matt, the shire, and other stakeholders. While earlier concepts featured the portraiture style Matt is known for, the final design evolved into something uniquely Peninsula.

The iconic Australian gum and wattle elements dance against backgrounds of red and yellow, representing earth and soil, while blues in motion echo the waters of the bay. The hands, coloured by earth and water, emerge from the swirling patterns, a powerful acknowledgment of the Bunurong/ Boon Wurrung peoples' enduring relationship with this stretch of coast.

Rainbow elements weave through the composition, celebrating the Peninsula's social, cultural and neurodiverse community, with particular attention to welcoming LGBTIQA+ people. Nothing in the piece is necessarily neat or geometric; it's all captured in moments of action, shifting and splashing, reflecting a community that's constantly in motion.

The mural mirrors the work happening inside the collective, where Bayview Care operates its secondhand shop and community hub. Like the artwork's fluid forms, the space within adapts and shifts to meet community needs. Visitors might discover opportunities to create stronger futures through a second-hand purchase, a coffee or a donation.

Matt's abstract approach invites interpretation rather than dictating meaning, and has fast become a visual anchor for Rosebud, turning a plain wall into a canvas where community stories converge and new conversations begin. The interior space continues to evolve, with ongoing discussions about future uses for music, art, games, mentoring, and community gatherings. As they say at the collective: you never know what you might find the next time you visit.

FROM ROSE-HUED CLIFFS AT DAWN TO TANGERINERIPPLED WAVES AT SUNSET, A SPECTACULAR PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBITION CAPTURING THE RICH DIVERSITY OF AUSTRALIA’S NATURAL LANDSCAPES PROMISES TO SET SENSES SOARING.

In a limited opportunity not to be missed, Melbourne photographer Nathan Penhall’s exhilarating portfolio of nature and aerial images can be seen at Mornington Library during January and February, and Oak Hill Gallery in March.

His work reveals the changeable nature of our land’s beauty – sometimes delicate, sometimes powerful –transporting visitors on a journey through locations recognisable and unfamiliar.

With a strong belief in the transformative power of imagery to evoke emotions and forge connections, Nathan knows each viewer’s experience of the exhibition

will be unique. Some will enjoy picking out locations they have previously visited; many will marvel at the breathtaking kaleidoscope of nature’s colours, while others may instinctively feel a pang of hope for the protection of our precious untouched sites so they can stand for generations to come. He admits it is a conscious aim of his portfolio to raise awareness about sustainability and the importance of preserving our pristine habitats.

Shooting at locations all over Australia, Nathan has high praise for our own scenery. “The contrasting landscape of the Mornington Peninsula is a dream for any photographer of the natural environment,” he said. “From the endless green rolling hills of world-

class vineyards to the rugged and windswept coastlines of national parks, every corner you turn provides a cinematic backdrop to capture. It’s a truly magical place.”

Pressed to nominate which part of our region impresses him most, Nathan said: “Arriving at Cape Schanck an hour before sunrise on a cold August morning holds a special place in my memory, and has been my favourite destination to capture on the Peninsula. Dawn and sunrise shoots are what excite me the most: the fleeting magical light in the sky, along with a sense of solitude that allows me to savour the moment without distraction.”

JUGGLING FAMILY DEMANDS AND STRUGGLING TO RETURN TO PHYSICAL TRAINING AFTER HAVING CHILDREN, A BUSY MOTHER REALISED OTHER WOMEN AROUND HER WERE FEELING THE SAME. SUPPORTING MUMS IN THEIR PURSUIT OF FITNESS, SHE NOW RUNS A MORNINGTON GYM WITH HER HUSBAND.

With seven children ranging in age from 18 months to 24 years, it’s sometimes a challenge for Shell Angliss to make time for herself. As an investment towards her current and future health, however, she is committed to including fitness training in her weekly routine.

As the owner of the familyfriendly Resolute Resistance gym, Shell recommends mums lock in training times like they would a meeting, saying it’s important they prioritise themselves in their schedules. She is keen to encourage mums to take that first step.

“You will feel better for it and you actually end up with more energy,” she said. “Use your kids as an excuse to train, not the other way around. Your kids can join in with you. You leading a

healthy and active lifestyle is being the best role model you can be for your kids.”

With a background in teaching and personal training, Shell loves helping others and enjoys empowering and educating people to achieve their goals. Her gym includes targeted programs specific to clients’ needs.

“When I fell pregnant with twins, I wondered how I was ever going to fit in training. This is how our Mums and Minis classes came about with the staffed creche. I want mums to have a safe and supportive place to train.”

The Resistance Training for Teens program originated from her aim to support teens to feel confident and learn to move safely in a gym environment.

Shell says she’s constantly impressed by the level of commitment of mums at her gym. “Some start the day early so they can have some of the day on their own while their little ones sleep; others bring them along for the ride; others organise their life around school chaos. They all have a can-do attitude.”

Watching the progress her clients make towards achieving positive transformation and improving their overall confidence is, for Shell, the greatest reward. At Resolute Resistance, she’s there to support the journey.

JEAN-LUC’S A

Big Hit

A SPORTING ACCIDENT ONCE KNOCKED HIM FOR SIX AND THREATENED HIS DREAMS, BUT A SOUTH AFRICAN CRICKETER IS NOW HITTING BOUNDARIES FOR THE MORNINGTON PENINSULA CLUB HE CALLS HOME.

Twenty-two-year-old Jean-Luc Talbot knows everything depends on the next ball you face, and that your luck can change in the blink of an eye.

Alongside his obvious cricketing talent, it is his humility that has earned him the respect and admiration of his peers since joining Mount Eliza Cricket Club in late 2023. What few realise is that Jean-Luc’s reluctance to take anything for granted is rooted in a life-changing event that occurred in his early teens. At 13, he was struck on the ankle by a hockey stick during a school match. In the days that followed, the pain worsened and walking became a struggle. Visits to the doctor resulted in X-rays, medicine and a moon boot, but it wasn’t until he was taken to hospital in agony and with a high fever that tests revealed the injury had caused

cellulitis, triggering a dangerous staph infection. At one point there were even fears Jean-Luc’s foot would need to be amputated. After a staggering 19 surgeries and several courses of antibiotics, it was a huge relief when he was finally given the all-clear.

Before the accident, Jean-Luc had been awarded a sports scholarship to a private secondary college, to which he returned to continue playing cricket after his recovery. Staying at the boarding school during the week and going home only on weekends, he happily threw himself into the institution’s strong sporting culture. Soon after finishing school, he joined Minster Cricket Club in Kent, having been recognised for his talent at the recreational club Zingari. In a program providing novice cricketers the opportunity to be paired with

professionals from their own country, he was accompanied to the UK by South African cricketer Eddie Moore.

His overseas debut saw him finish the year with the highest runs for the club: a whopping 1379. Jean-Luc’s success drew the attention of Sidcup Cricket Club, which enlisted him for the First XI. He experienced another great year, ending the 2023 season with the awards for leading batter and leading wicketkeeper.

Jean-Luc’s father, Jean-Pierre, had meanwhile left South Africa and found his own niche at the Mount Eliza club. He urged his son to join him in Australia, insisting he too would love the Peninsula lifestyle and camaraderie of the club. Jean-Pierre’s push was heartily endorsed by club committee member and friend Wes Bourke, but

their plans were crushed when JeanPierre was forced to take a job in Perth. The much-anticipated reunion didn’t happen, with Jean-Pierre heading west before Jean-Luc arrived on our southeastern shores.

Undeterred, and taken under Wes’s wing, Jean-Luc quickly asserted himself as a valuable contributor at his new club. A stand-out performer in the Firsts, he also coaches an under-16s team with spectacular results. On and off the field his determination and resilience make him a fantastic role model for young club members. Currently studying sports remedial massage and soon to start a parttime job, it seems Jean-Luc has firmly planted himself on the Peninsula – and Mount Eliza Cricket Club couldn’t be happier.

Preserving Sorrento’s maritime past

THE CATALYST FOR A LIFELONG PASSION, A YOUNG MAN’S DISCOVERY AND ADMIRATION OF PORT PHILLIP’S HISTORICAL WOODEN FISHING BOATS COMPELLED HIM TO LEARN HOW THEY WERE MADE. FIFTY YEARS ON, HE’S AN EXPERT ON THEIR CONSTRUCTION AND RESTORATION.

Cruising the bay on a sunny day in the 1970s, Tim Phillips was confident his sleek 28-foot yacht eclipsed the couta boat drifting nearby. Nonetheless, he watched with interest as the old fisherman in the little craft stopped to raise its sails. In a gesture of friendly sportsmanship, when the couta began its passage through the Heads, Tim decided to accompany it towards Sorrento.

But what was this? The smaller boat began racing swiftly ahead, easily

overtaking his ketch. While other young men might have felt a blow to their pride, Tim’s focus turned instead to the mechanisms of the leading boat. How did it move so fast?

After mooring, Tim approached the couta’s owner, Ted McKinnon, who introduced him to Mermerus. It was one of only two original coutas in existence, designed and built in 1938 by Ken Lacco, of Rosebud. The working elements of the boat, combined with its timber craftmanship, appealed to Tim’s sensibilities as a master builder/ carpenter.

So began his love affair with these wooden boats of yesteryear. They were originally strictly intended as fishing boats, taking their name from the barracouta, but Tim saw their potential for racing and recreational pleasure.

Benefiting from an informal apprenticeship with Ken and another boatbuilder, Jack Norling, Tim’s future business began at his home shed in Portsea, restoring coutas and later

designing and building new boats to order.

As demand for his skills increased, Tim’s operation moved to Hotham Rd and opened as The Wooden Boatshop. The site has grown incrementally over the years, now including several well-equipped boatbuilding and service areas, a chandlery, and more recently a huge dry storage stack facility.

Building almost 50 coutas since 1983 and restoring many more, Tim is responsible for the resurgence of the boat that was almost lost to history. In recognition of his achievements, in 2021 he was awarded a Medal (OAM) of the Order of Australia for Service to Sailing and Wooden Boat Restoration.

It’s easy to assume his public accolades alone would gain him the admiration of his team, but Tim’s generosity with his time and knowledge – working alongside employees and teaching apprentices – give them reason to respect him all the more. His team of 35 includes designers, engineers, mechanics, boatbuilders, painters

and sailmakers, and all have a hand in creating the boat shop’s extensive range of boats, from classic coutas to luxuriously appointed pleasure cruisers.

His commitment to developing talent is such that nearly every role is supplemented by at least one apprentice position. At last year’s Melbourne Boat Show, The Wooden Boatshop was named Apprentice Employer of the Year, while one of his team, Asher Bouwmeester, was a finalist in the Apprentice of the Year category.

The Wooden Boatshop oversees the production of nearly every component, including bronze fittings, fastenings and wooden sailing blocks, giving the team confidence in the quality of materials used.

Saving the couta from being relegated to a footnote in the annals of boating history, Tim has given the craft a new lease on life to be enjoyed for generations to come.

Peninsula landscapes create Connected Perspectives

PENINSULA PAINTERS CATHERINE DE BOISE AND CATHY USATOFF HAVE CONNECTED THROUGH THEIR MUTUAL LOVE OF LANDSCAPE PAINTING AND WILL BE SHOWCASING THEIR WORK IN A COMBINED EXHIBITION AT BLUE MOON ARTIST COLLECTIVE IN RED HILL.

Connected Perspectives is about the connections we make with each other and with the landscapes we inhabit.

Catherine is inspired by the interplay of light and landscape, with her artworks reflecting her ongoing exploration of the unique beauty of the Peninsula coastline. She aims to evoke a sense of place and timelessness, inviting the viewer to pause and reflect on the natural beauty of this extraordinary region.

“Each piece captures the subtle shifts in light as it dances across coastal plants, dunes and pathways, revealing the intricate textures and colours of the environment,” she said. “The works are a meditation on both the fleeting and enduring qualities of the coastal scene: the way the sunlight touches the native flora, the way the land curves and shifts, and the way these elements interact with the everchanging sky and sea.”

Cathy, whose style is best described as contemporary Impressionism, has immersed herself in the landscapes of the Peninsula. The boundaries between observation and personal expression intersect, crafting vibrant, evocative scenes that reflect her

connection to the region. “The Mornington Peninsula is more than just a scenic backdrop; it’s a place that evokes memory, nostalgia, and a sense of a place,” she said.

Cathy’s paintings explore the seasonal transformations of the coastal bushland, wineries and farmland. She aims to transport her audience to a world where the colours of the landscape, the mood of the seasons, and the character of the land come together to form a cohesive narrative of the region’s natural beauty.

The exhibition also features the artists’ paintings of the pine trees at Shoreham Beach that show how they have interpreted the same landscape from a different perspective.

“I am constantly in awe of the works that these two extraordinary artists create,” said Blue Moon curator and director Charlie Ryan. “I don’t think any home on the Peninsula will truly be complete without artworks by one or both of these artists on their walls.”

Connected Perspectives opens on Saturday, January 25, with an event from 3-5.30pm, and runs until February 9. Blue Moon Artist Collective is at 169 Shoreham-Red Hill Rd, Red Hill South.

The above painting of pine trees at Shoreham Beach by Cathy Usatoff, left, will be shown alongside another interpretation of the same scene by Catherine De Boise.

Heronswood The Magic of

IN 1895, A YOUNG MARGARET SUTHERLAND THOUGHT HER UNCLE’S HOME WAS A FAIRY PALACE WITH AN ENCHANTED GARDEN.

THE PROPERTY RETAINS THAT MAGICAL QUALITY TODAY.

Heronswood was built as a country retreat for academic William Edward Hearn. A brilliant lawyer and classicist, the Irishman arrived in Melbourne in 1855 as a foundation professor at the University of Melbourne, later becoming dean of law. In 1864, Hearn bought 18.6ha on the lower slopes of Arthurs Seat and hired artist-architect Edward La Trobe Bateman to design the house. A drop-slab cottage with a hardwood shingle roof was erected first, followed in 1871 by the granite and limestone homestead that resembled a medieval castle. The garden featured rare exotic trees, lawns and an orchard, with pines lining the driveway as a windbreak.

After Hearn’s death in 1888, Alexander Sutherland bought the property. A writer, philosopher and educator, Sutherland retired early to focus on literature and science, but the Depression of 1892-3 forced him back to work as a journalist. He became registrar and lecturer at Melbourne University in 1901 but died unexpectedly at 50.

Henry Bournes Higgins bought Heronswood in 1906. Higgins, a lawyer specialising in equity, entered politics but became a High Court judge in 1903. As president of the Arbitration Court, one of his rulings established the basic wage. Higgins, an outdoor enthusiast, swam daily and hiked Arthurs Seat. Heronswood had a tennis court and nearby bathing boxes for entertaining guests. Higgins died in 1929 and was buried at Dromana alongside his son, who died in World War I.

Camberwell baker William Farey and his wife Jessie bought the property in 1932 as a holiday home. In 1939, Heronswood somehow survived the bushfires that destroyed the surrounding area.

The Fareys sold Heronswood to Jack and Ada Wilson in 1958. Their ownership saw major changes and much-needed restoration work. In 1962, 8ha were sold for subdivision and more land was acquired for a freeway and drainage easement, leaving 1.4ha. The orchard disappeared, cypress pines were replaced with Queensland box, and white camellias were planted.

Two more owners occupied the property before it was bought by Clive and Penny Blazey in 1983. Heronswood became not only their family home but the focus for The Diggers Club, which they started in 1978 to preserve heirloom flowers and vegetables. They saved and sold seeds by mail order and set about altering the gardens to become a showcase for plants grown in their nursery and to promote their methods of working with nature, rather than against it. Heronswood is a classified home on the Victorian Heritage Register and its garden is listed in The Oxford Companion to Gardens.

A new restaurant, shop and office building opened in 1996 but burnt down in a 2014 bushfire. In 2011, the Blazeys gifted the property to The Diggers Foundation to ensure the vision they championed would carry on, and the foundation continues to preserve Heronswood as the spiritual home of Diggers.

Frankston’s high-society past

FOLLOWING THE ADVENTURES OF AN ENTERPRISING YOUNG WOMAN WHO WOULD BECOME THE PROPRIETOR OF A POPULAR FRANKSTON GUESTHOUSE IN THE 1930S, A NEW BOOK PROVIDES A FASCINATING GLIMPSE INTO THE ERA’S SOCIAL LANDSCAPE.

At the base of Olivers Hill, on the site of a more recently demolished service station, The Fernery Guesthouse was once a thriving hotspot for well-to-do’s during the ‘30s. Lifetime Frankston resident and former Collingwood player Alan Wickes has written a colourful record of the establishment and the life of Rose ‘Ro’ Milne, the woman behind its success, in his latest work The Fernery –Frankston’s High Society

The book is a far cry from his previous publication, the autobiography The Second Storey Man, which took its title from the nickname he was given for his impressive marks as a VFL player

in the ‘50s. Shifting focus from his own football career to that of a young woman living in the ‘30s seems a sizeable leap itself, but the appeal of the subject is understandable when her connection to Alan becomes apparent.

Ro was the aunt of Alan’s wife Faye, and he has fond memories of the woman and the venue she managed; he and Faye celebrated their wedding breakfast at The Fernery in 1961. He recalls her as a lively, glamorous woman even in her later years. Copious family records in the form of letters, photographs and diaries provide a window into her earlier years.

One of eight children – four boys and four girls – Ro was raised on the Bellarine Peninsula, where the Milnes owned a farm. She seems to have been the most robust of the four girls, with an appetite for fun. After years of caring for two of her illness-prone sisters, Ro was keen to assert her own identity in her early 20s. Her sister Lilla, the least healthy, catalogued Ro’s efforts to find work in Melbourne in her diary, its entries including the observation: “Ro is trying hard for a position as air hostess, but no luck yet.” After brief stints at part-time work, including a job at Coles, things started to look up in 1938. Lilla wrote: “Ro has gone to another situation, do hope

this is a lasting one and she likes it too – it sounds the best yet (Frankston House).”

Ro’s management of the Frankston coffee palace, built by Ritchies supermarket founder Thomas Ritchie, greatly impressed James and Rachel Bradbury, the builders and original owners of The Fernery.

Within the year Ro was granted ownership of their business, together with her sister Allie and brother-inlaw Bill Taylor; Ro and Bill were the proprietors. Family support was strong – Faye’s parents, Bob and Thelma, were working partners, with Bob supplying fresh produce from their farm in Robinsons Rd.

During and after World War II, The Fernery indeed became ‘high society’, a social hub where guests and military personnel congregated and enjoyed much-deserved rest and recreation. It was also a popular gathering spot for local bohemian artists, including Harry McClelland, the founder of Langwarrin’s McClelland Sculpture Park+Gallery.

The venue played a significant part in the history of Frankston in the early to mid-20th century. To learn more about Ro Milne and the stunning fern-filled tearooms once located at the foot of Olivers Hill, you can buy The Fernery – Frankston’s High Society at: W: alanwickes.net

months ago. "It's quite perfect for the wildlife. It's got a bungalow at the back, which I use as a hospital, and it's got a huge backyard and undercover area for other animals."

Running the shelter isn't cheap, especially on a pension. Heat pads, lamps, medication, housing, and food for the animals are significant expenses. Fortunately, a vet provides their services free of charge for wildlife care, but the shelter relies heavily on community support to continue its essential work.

Brenda is particularly passionate about educating people about roadside wildlife casualties. "What annoys me is people will ring and say, 'Oh, we've just seen an injured kangaroo on the road. Can you come and check it?' And they don't even stop to check if there's a baby inside."

She stresses that checking the pouches of any animal – whether it's a kangaroo, possum, or sugar glider – can save

lives, as babies can survive for days after their mother's death.

For those who do stop to help, Brenda offers crucial advice: never pull a joey from its mother's teat, as this can break its jaw. Even if a pouch appears empty, a long teat could indicate a joey is nearby. She also emphasises the importance of calling wildlife carers for injured bats rather than handling them directly, due to the risk of contracting lyssavirus.

Despite recent falls and hospital visits, Brenda's commitment to wildlife care remains firm. Her love for the animals, especially kookaburras, flying foxes, and birds of prey, keeps her going. "It's quite amazing with the birds of prey," she said. "You think they'd be fierce and horrible, but they're quite shy, and I can generally hand-feed them within three days of taking them in."

Between midnight feeds and earlymorning medications, Brenda's home buzzes with the sounds of healing

wildlife, fuelled by her belief that every animal deserves a second chance. With gentle hands, a caring heart and quiet determination, Brenda is making sure they get one.

Let’s raise the roof

Merricks Station Grounds is calling on the Peninsula community to help raise money for a covered arena to allow year-round riding and improve the safety of riders and horses.

The equestrian centre, which is home to the Merricks Saddle Club, Peninsula Quarter Horse Association and Merricks Pony Club, was on track to gain a roof over one of its large arenas after Mornington Peninsula Shire secured a matching Commonwealth grant in 2019 for various projects at the centre. However, administrative delays and the COVID-19 pandemic resulted in a cost blowout for the roof, taking it from $1 million to $2.2 million.

“This was a major disappointment to the equestrian community, particularly the clubs and riders based at Merricks Station Grounds,” its volunteer committee of management said. “A roofed arena provides flexibility and certainty without the restraints imposed by unsafe and unsuitable weather conditions. However, the council reiterated their support for the project provided full community funding could be obtained.

“The committee is determined to develop our facility into one of relevance for today and into the future. The combined efforts of the clubs and committee has raised $367,000, with a target construction date of January 2026.

“A roofed arena would be a tremendous asset that will increase the use of Merricks Station Grounds and cement its future as an equestrian facility. Australian equestrian competitors have always shone on the world stage, and their development starts at the grassroots level (with organisations) such as Merricks Station Grounds.”

Tax-deductible donations can be made through the Australian Sports Foundation at www.asf.org.au by searching Raise The Roof Merricks. All donations will be recognised on the honour board at the grounds, and donations over $100,000 will attract special benefits. Sponsorship opportunities for businesses interested in making substantial contributions are available; email committee chair Jenny Moore at geegeejennym@gmail.com for details.

BUILDING FUTURES IN BEAUTY THERAPY ON THE PENINSULA

The Mornington Peninsula is known for its hot springs, spas, and relaxation services. As one of southeast Melbourne's largest TAFEs, Chisholm Institute plays a vital role in partnering with leading businesses in this space. The collaborations enhance training programs, benefiting the local industry and equipping students with the skills to start rewarding careers.

A recent collaboration with Peninsula Hot Springs showcases Chisholm’s commitment to connecting students with the industry. During a visit and information session, beauty therapy students engaged with the professionals, gaining insights into career pathways and inspiration for their futures.

For beauty therapy graduate Liara Murray, the visit was a turning point. Inspired by the experience, she secured a spa hostess role at Peninsula Hot Springs, launching her beauty career. “I’ve gained so much experience in my role,” Liara said.

This real-world approach to education is central to Chisholm’s beauty therapy courses. With training tailored to industry needs and evolving trends, students prepare to become stand-out candidates in a competitive field. On campus, they hone their craft in cutting-edge facilities and gain hands-on experience at the student-run Mysa Salon and Spa, all

under the guidance of professionally experienced teachers. "My teachers were instrumental in helping me develop my abilities, push myself, and always give my best effort," Liara said.

Chisholm’s hair, beauty and wellness education manager, Lorraine Castle, highlights how this robust network provides opportunities and bridges the gap between study and employment.

“Our industry-leading partnerships give students access to hands-on experience and career-ready skills,” Lorraine said.

“Liara’s story is a shining example of how these collaborations lead to meaningful careers.”

Thanks to industry partnerships and dynamic, hands-on training, Chisholm beauty therapy students graduate ready to make an impact – whether in luxury spas, their own salons, or beyond.

FOR YOUR FIT-OUT

IF YOU’RE READY TO SET UP OR EXPAND YOUR BUSINESS AND REQUIRE A FIRST-CLASS FIT-OUT, SOUL CO. FITOUTS IS READY FOR YOU.

Soul Co. Fitouts prides itself on excellence in customer service and delivering the highest quality product. Based on the Mornington Peninsula, it provides insightful and professional advice on all aspects of commercial fit-outs, from retail and office to hospitality and medical premises.

Founder Anthony Little grew up on the Peninsula, and in 1986 at just 17 he landed a carpentry and joinery apprenticeship fitting out Myer and David Jones stores throughout Australia before starting his own shopfitting company. Although working for clients such as Sanity, Virgin Music, Laura Ashley and Westfield has taken him throughout Australia and overseas, Anthony’s passion has always been the Peninsula and its people, and this prompted him to launch Soul Co. Fitouts to focus on local businesses.

St Andrews Beach Brewery founder Andrew Purchase said Anthony and Soul Co. had been a fundamental part of the brewery’s story. “We approached Anthony to ensure the fit-out of our main bar was completed to the highest standard,” Andrew

said. “Having worked with him in the past, we knew that is what would be delivered. Soul Co. continue to be involved with SAB as our brand grows. We would have no hesitation in recommending them for any commercial fit-out.”

Anthony said Soul Co.’s ability to work with other organisations with clear communication and transparency ensured projects from inception to completion were delivered efficiently and to the highest standard.

“From the smallest through to larger and more complex projects, Soul Co. Fitouts places the highest value on partnering with Peninsula-based businesses. Strong relationships between our people and our clients are the core of everything we do.”

A double shot of

DACHSHUND

WHEN YOU HEAR THE STORY OF ROSEBUD'S MOST CHARMING MINIATURE

DACHSHUNDS, COCO AND MOKA, YOU'LL DISCOVER IT'S A TALE WOVEN WITH FAMILY TRADITION, LUCKY NUMBERS, AND PLENTY OF PERSONALITY.

These pint-size cousins – their mothers are sisters – were bred in Queensland, with Coco joining Dannii Raisher and her sons Jett and Levi in 2020, and Moka following in 2022. Their names, however, tell a special story. "Our lucky

family number is four,” Dannii said. “All our birthdays have a four in them, as do our sports jerseys, and both my kids have four-letter names, so the dogs had to as well." When it came to choosing Moka's name two years later, "Moka needed to be 'hot drink'-related and have four letters, so Moka it was”.

Despite their shared genetics, these pups have distinct personalities. In Dannii's words: "Coco is a true lady, prim and proper, and Moka is a wrecking ball, like a mini bulldog."

Their contrasting personalities extend to their eating habits too. While dachshunds can be quite fussy, which Coco certainly is, Moka will eat anything

– a trait that became evident when she managed to sneak an entire slab of pâté off the snack tray and eat it whole.

These determined dachshunds prove that size doesn't matter when it comes to adventure. "Coco and Moka love walking, and it's nothing for those little legs to walk 10km along the foreshore. We love camping and the dogs love the caravan."

At home, both pups display their endearing dachshund traits. "Coco is a dachshund 'doughnut' sleeper, meaning she is always curled up in a circle like a doughnut. They both love to burrow and be tucked up in their doggie sleeping bag."

While they may have one notable bad habit – “Barking, barking, barking!” – their positive qualities of loyalty and cuddles far outweigh any excessive vocalisations.

For anyone considering adding a miniature dachshund to their family, Dannii offers this advice: "Do it. They are the perfect little companion, but they must be trained. And if you’re going to leave the house a lot, they will do better with a friend."

Whether they're burrowed snugly in their doggie sleeping bags or leaving tiny paw prints along the Rosebud foreshore, Coco and Moka are always brewing up four-midable fun for the Raisher family.

The Arawatta, at 91.4m and 2114 tons, was a sister ship to the Aramac and operated on the Australian coast from 1890 to 1924. Painting by Allan C. Green, State Library of Victoria

Arawatta arrives after eventful passage

Before travel by air became the usual way to make longer trips within Australia, there were several companies that operated passenger ships around the coast. One of these was the Australasian United Steam Navigation Company Limited, known by the acronym AUSN, which was formed in 1886.

The line had close connections to the famous British India Steam Navigation Company and used a similar black funnel with two white bands. The line began with the purchase of the fleet of the earlier Australasian Steam Navigation Company but in 1889 had its first new ships, the Aramac and the Arawatta, built by Wm Denny in Dumbarton.

When the Arawatta arrived in Port Phillip on Monday, January 20, 1890, she was delayed for about four hours at the quarantine station while doctors checked on the health of those on board. Arawatta had come from Mauritius, where a cargo of sugar and rum was loaded. Several days out of Port Louis, four seamen became seriously ill and the captain made a stop at Albany where they were landed. One died there but the other three returned aboard and had almost recovered by the time the ship reached Melbourne.

for the passage to Zanzibar. At those times of colonial expansion, the Sultan of Zanzibar had granted concessions to the British East Africa Company for the new state, which was to the north of Zanzibar. While in Zanzibar, a banquet was arranged on board the Arawatta for the famous explorer Henry Morton Stanley, who had just returned to the coast.

The Arawatta had made a rather longer passage than was expected because of delays at Naples, Lamu, Zanzibar and Port Louis, Mauritius. She had run aground in Lamu but was hauled off by a Royal Navy ship that was in port. The Governor of the new East African state of Ibea and his party of officers boarded her in Naples

The ship was fitted out in the latest style to be attractive as well as comfortable for the passengers and included ducted ventilation and electrical lighting, which was unusual on the Australian coast. Though in use for more than 33 years, she remained a popular vessel but was sold in April 1924 and turned into a hulk. She was scuttled off Sydney Heads in September 1936.

deep sky Dive into the

The constellations best seen in January are Caelum, Dorado, Lepus, Mensa, Orion, Pictor, Reticulum and Taurus. Two of them – Orion and Taurus – are quite prominent in the evening sky, while others are simply best observed at this time of year. January is the best time of year to observe several famous deep sky objects located in these constellations.

The most popular telescope targets include the Orion Nebula (M42), the Crab Nebula (M1), the Pleiades (M45) and Hyades clusters, and the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). The LMC in the constellation Dorado can be seen with binoculars in the evenings. Among its sparkling stars you will find

the Tarantula Nebula (NGC 2070), which appears to the naked eye as a glowing patch the size of the full moon.

You will also find the second brightest star, Canopus, in the constellation Carina sitting high in the sky, while Sirius, the brightest in the entire night sky, is almost overhead. Orion dominates the view with its brightest stars, supergiants blue-white Rigel and red Betelgeuse, also high up, and the Orion Nebula placed high within the constellation. The prominent upside down ‘V’ shape of the Hyades open star cluster in Taurus is a fine sight to the naked eye or through binoculars, with nearby Aldebaran, the brightest star in the constellation, shining with a

red-orange tint lower in the north. This month sees lots of conjunctions, which is when two astronomical objects appear close to each other in the sky: January 4 with the moon and Venus, January 5 with the moon and Saturn, January 11 with the moon and Jupiter, January 14 with the moon and Mars, and January 20 with Venus and Saturn.

The Mornington Peninsula Astronomical Society will be holding its Summer Series public stargazing nights on Friday, January 3; Saturday, January 4; Friday, January 10; and Friday, January 17, at the MPAS Observatory at The Briars in Mount Martha. They start at 8pm with a multimedia talk and

Q&A before moving outside to view the moon, planets, stars and clusters, all through a wide array of telescopes supplied by the society and members. Tickets are limited and bookings are necessary, so don’t miss out.

TOURISM DE FORCE

The beginning of summer marked not only what was the impending Christmas and busy tourist season ahead, but also the merger of the MP Hinterland Tourism Association and Western Port Tourism Association.

Although both entities will still be known to the public – the WPT for its provision of the amazing volunteer-powered ‘Fish Shed’ information centre at Hastings, and both as associations providing resources and networking opportunities for businesses within their respective regions – together they will be known in a business-to-business capacity as Beyond the Bays Tourism.

This not-for-profit organisation has, according to Beyond the Bays

Association president Dianne Gardiner, “merged into one as a means to avoid duplication, increase value to member businesses and ensure the sustainability of the association”.

In addition, Beyond the Bays Tourism has, as Mornington Peninsula Regional Tourism Board chief executive Angela Cleland said, entered “a landmark partnership (with) Mornington Peninsula Regional Tourism”. Dianne added: “This collaboration provides a fantastic opportunity for our businesses to gain greater visibility and support.”

Micro, small and even larger tourism businesses that are not yet members are encouraged to email Beyond the Bays Tourism at info@beyondthebays.com.au

Homeschool Academy a lifeline for families

LYDIA DENKER, A MOTHER TO A TEENAGE SON, NEVER IMAGINED HERSELF AS A HOMESCHOOLER. IN THE WAKE OF THE 2020 PANDEMIC, THEIR WORLD SHIFTED, AND SO DID THEIR PATH.

Lydia watched her son’s anxiety worsen as the constant disruptions of returning to school between lockdowns made it clear that traditional schooling was no longer the right fit.

Meanwhile, Lydia’s beauty salon, a source of income and stability at that time, was forced to close for 22 months, adding both financial and emotional stresses. Struggling to support her son through homeschooling while keeping her family afloat, she quickly discovered that the resources available weren’t enough. Her emotional and mental capacity were stretched thin, and private tutoring, though an option, was far too expensive.

In a moment of desperation, Lydia turned to social media, asking if other families were interested in pooling resources to hire a teacher for group tutoring. The response was overwhelming. Not only did parents reach out, but teachers who had lost their jobs due to the pandemic also needed support. Lydia received more than 1500 emails from families eager for a solution. That moment marked the birth of Homeschool Academy Australia, or HSA.

What began as a community-driven initiative quickly blossomed into a business designed to support both families and teachers during an incredibly challenging time. HSA became a vital resource for families navigating the uncertainty and disruption

caused by the pandemic. As the world slowly returned to normal, it became clear that the toll on children’s mental health was far-reaching. The ‘School Can’t’ crisis, previously known as School Refusal, continues to grow today.

Families who turn to HSA don’t quite fit into the traditional school system or the typical homeschool model. They’re looking for something in between – an approach that’s flexible, supportive, and tailored to their child’s unique pace. HSA offers the perfect balance of structure, giving families the confidence to transition back into traditional schooling if they choose. Many families face the heartbreaking challenge of keeping their child in a system that isn't meeting their needs out of fear and uncertainty about homeschooling. HSA offers a solution: a bridge between traditional schooling and homeschooling. The academy provides affordable group

tutoring, allowing families the space to heal, grow, and learn together while still taking on the responsibility for their child’s education.

Though some traditional homeschoolers may disagree with HSA’s approach, the academy remains focused on what truly matters: the profound impact it has on the lives of families, especially as the long-term effects of the pandemic’s toll on children’s mental health continue to unfold.

Homeschool Academy Australia has become a lifeline for families in a world that will never be quite the same. It’s not just about education; it’s about healing, building community, and meeting the needs of families navigating anxiety, neurodivergence, and school refusal. Lydia and her incredible team remain committed to supporting those who need it most as they continue to transform lives one family at a time.

THE FUN WAY TO LEARN ITALIAN

Maria-Antonia Campagna is a secondary school teacher and author. In 2021, having published a series of Italian conversational books, she began conducting Italian classes at D.O.C Mornington, affectionately known as Caffè e Conversazione.

Caffè e Conversazione is a beginner’s guide to conversational Italian. The programs have an emphasis on conversational dialogues and roleplaying where participants practise the language concepts learnt in a fun and relaxed manner. It allows for language immersion, social interaction, friendly banter and hopefully a good coffee in a welcoming environment. Caffè e Conversazione – Have fun with IT. are the texts used.

Maria-Antonia’s students come from across the Peninsula and beyond. “I travel from Middle Park each week, which shows how much I enjoy these lessons,” said Cathie.

“Maria-Antonia is an outstanding Italian teacher. Her passion and patience makes every lesson enjoyable.”

“I love attending Maria-Antonia’s classes at D.O.C,” Janis said. “The setting is perfect, the coffee is great, and her teaching is clear and concise but relaxed in its delivery. The pace of learning is pitched to the group; the minimum of preparation is sufficient but there is an opportunity if you want to do a deeper dive.”

Penelope-Mary said: “I thoroughly enjoy Italian conversation lessons with Maria-Antonia. Sitting in D.O.C, hearing chatter in Italian in the background, perfectly sets the tone as we work through practical scenarios, learning effortlessly and gaining confidence in the language.”

Just minutes from Frankston’s shoreline, beach-fresh air mingles with the aroma of expertly curated seasonal fare at Hotel Lona. This lively venue offers a diverse dining experience that includes casual bites and upscale meals, and successfully blends different atmospheres across its multi-level space.

The full-service dining room, next to the public bar, has elevated its offering under a new head chef. Featuring upmarket bistro-style dishes like chicken provencal, prawn linguine, and porterhouse alongside traditional pub fare, the menu proudly showcases Peninsula produce. With at least 10 weekly specials, there’s always something new.

For those seeking a more laid-back vibe, the public bar provides casual dining with bi-fold windows opening onto the street and sports on screen. It’s an ideal spot to enjoy quality wines, cocktails and light bites.

The crown jewel of Hotel Lona is undoubtedly its roof top. Designed for year-round use, it’s a sundrenched oasis in summer and a cosy, enclosed space in winter.

On weekends, the atmosphere buzzes with live music, making it the perfect spot for a long lunch. As the sun sinks below the horizon, watch the space transform from lively dining into a late-night Rooftop Club with DJs and a packed dance floor.

For special occasions, the private dining room on the top level accommodates up to 25 seated guests, with flexible catering options available.

Hotel Lona’s commitment to live music shines through, particularly in summer, with performances up to five nights a week. The venue also hosts various events throughout the year, from Christmas in July to special bottomless menu offerings.

Indicators point to a brighter year ahead

In real estate terms, 2024 was increasingly challenging for Victorian vendors and agents, especially in regional areas like the Mornington Peninsula. Other states fared much better.

Western Australia, Queensland and South Australia all continued to perform strongly, with increasing home values pushed by short supply. WA became the fastest-growing state, with Perth and Queensland’s Sunshine Coast star performers in real estate sales. There was nary a thought for the cost of living or housing affordability

concerns weighing down other parts of Australia.

Victoria was the second-fastest growing state to March after a significant population decline during COVID due to interstate migration. The growth in 2024, however, was driven by Victoria absorbing a larger share of overseas migration, which masked the continued departure of Victorians to other states. The overseas migration and big government projects, like the new city tunnel, helped buoy the Melbourne metro market, but the Mornington Peninsula real estate

market laboured under an array of new and increased taxes, including land tax and Airbnb tax, combined with higher interest rates and soaring cost of living expenses.

According to CoreLogic, in the three months to October there were 138,000 new ‘for sale’ listings nationally, the highest level for this period since 2018. A recent article suggested that there is one buyer for every five properties currently for sale on the Peninsula, firming the market in favour of buyers with a wide choice of properties and some vendors needing to sell.

With inflation steadily declining and interest rate decreases expected by mid-2025, an improvement in household finances should result in an improvement for vendors and the market. Here’s to 2025 being a better year!

Unlock the value of your land

The Land Agent is a specialised real estate agency that is dedicated to selling vacant blocks of land or land that has a redevelopment opportunity. “We provide a unique service that is solely focused on our core offering,” said managing director and OIEC Bret Levenspiel.

A family-owned business based in Mount Eliza and covering the Mornington Peninsula, The Land Agent provides a professional, boutique service with a relaxed and modern approach. The types of buyers it attracts can range from families

looking for a blank canvas on which to build their dream home, to builders, developers and investors seeking their next project or investment.

“We have the experience and capabilities to address the needs of a range of buyers and ultimately sell our clients’ properties,” Bret said.

“We noticed a gap in the market where selling vacant land requires a completely tailored strategy – one that understands its unique potential for redevelopment, subdivision, or new builds. That’s where we come in.”

Unlike other agencies that might be more preoccupied with houses, open for inspections, leasing and property management, The Land Agent specialises in promoting the value of vacant lots and redevelopment opportunities. “From boutique blocks to larger land parcels, we recognise their potential and guide owners to achieve the best possible outcome.”

With decades of experience in investment, property development and administration, The Land Agent provides expert, focused services tailored specifically to land sales.

“Our speciality lies in unlocking the value of land,” Bret said.

If you are considering selling your land – whether small or large – or would like to know more, The Land Agent team would love to hear from you.

FACTOR IN SPF

Spending time in the sun during summer increases the risk of skin damage, making effective protection essential. SPF, or sun protection factor, measures how well a sunscreen protects your skin from ultraviolet radiation, or UV rays. For example, SPF 30 means your skin is protected 30 times longer than it would be without sunscreen.

There are two main types of sunscreens: chemical and physical. Chemical sunscreens use ingredients like avobenzone to absorb harmful UV rays and convert them into harmless heat. Physical sunscreens, such as those with zinc oxide, create a barrier that reflects and scatters UV rays. Both are effective, and the choice depends on your skin type and preference.

UV rays increase the risk of skin cancer and also accelerate skin ageing. UVA rays go deep into the skin, breaking down collagen and elastin, which leads to wrinkles and sagging. UVB rays damage the skin’s surface, causing dark spots and uneven pigmentation. Broad-spectrum sunscreens protect against both types, helping to prevent premature ageing and maintain healthy skin.

For additional help with uneven skin tone, consider medi-facials with tyrosinase inhibitors. These treatments reduce excess pigmentation by targeting the skin’s melanin production, helping to create a smoother, more even complexion. Speak with a skincare professional at Gaia Skin Clinic to see how these treatments can complement your daily sunscreen use.

Practitioner-only skin care, available only to Doctors and Registered Nurses.

In-clinic treatments - clinical imaging systems for skin analysis, chemical peels, lasers, skin tightening and more. Advanced Aesthetics, Wrinkle reducing treatments, addition of volume to face, Skin boosters, BioRemodelling & Clinical Hair Restoration

THE BENEFITS OF EARLY ORTHODONTIC TREATMENT

If you’re wondering when is the best time to start orthodontic treatment for your child, Dr Peter Scott recommends between ages seven and nine because some children benefit greatly from early intervention. Wearing certain appliances may reduce a child’s time in braces later and may also make treatment more effective.

And if you’re concerned about whether your child will still be able to enjoy the activities they love, rest assured Dr Scott and the team take the time to get to know you and your family to determine the most appropriate treatment option. Some appliances are removable, and some stay fixed in place. The team here consider the individual and what’s right for them.

Specialist orthodontic care for children, teens and adults. Highly experienced staff providing first class care, guidance and support to families and individuals on their orthodontic journey.

EXPERTISE IN

Many adults are now choosing to improve their smiles later in life. There is a range of aesthetic options available here to suit your lifestyle, including clear braces and aligners (Invisalign and Spark).

You do not need a referral to see the team at Dr Peter Scott & Associates. Contact the clinic to organise a consultation time with one of the specialist orthodontists to discuss the best treatment options for either yourself or your child.

STARS 2025

Success is possible through dedication, hard work and new responsibilities, especially between May and August when Saturn enters Aries. Your credibility will be increased but there could still be a desire to escape through travel or work on your masterpiece. Step up your health regimen and make that important commitment.

Since 2018, many Taureans have experienced unexpected changes in their lives, despite a preference for a steady, reliable lifestyle. More settled conditions are likely by April, but changing priorities may affect finances. You could be reminded that old acquaintances are not forgotten, so review the valuable lessons you have already learnt.

Jupiter the lucky planet moved into Gemini mid-2024, where it will remain until mid-2025. It is common for Jupiter action to coincide with expansion on multiple levels, including the physical and spiritual self. If this energy proves too much of a good thing, apply your intelligent Gemini solutions and say “No”.

Pamela is an international astrologer and will now be a regular contributor to Mornington Peninsula Magazine

Expansive Jupiter enters Cancer in June, making the second half of the year a good time to improve your environment and personal wellbeing. Quell fears from the top brass and focus on your own role. As a naturalborn nurturer, be confident in your ability to heal and comfort yourself and others.

Sunny Leos are always popular with friends, and 2025 could generate happiness through a special group activity. Powerful partners or allies are here to stay. Faraway worries require you to take precautions on long trips. Despite financial issues, a new plan should blossom behind the scenes.

Annoying health issues will not dampen the positive Libran spirit. This year your partner or other close one could give cause for concern, but great opportunity prevails through work or study. As you may be in heavy demand later, consider a pleasure trip, possibly before midyear.

Now that Pluto has left Capricorn, pressures and power struggles should finally start to ease, leaving you free to explore new priorities. The second half of the year favours partnerships, and a positive person could offer a great alternative. Calm those nerves and move forward.

2025 may be a transforming year for Scorpios, involving home, real estate or changes for a family member. As your decisions may be expensive and have far-reaching effects, for the sake of your wellbeing allow adequate rest and recreation. Good luck is possible through a new environment or routine.

New work or study directions can improve your position. In spite of limitations and worries caused by others, you have a chance to shine in the public arena. Apply your sound knowledge of physical, mental and spiritual immunity and rely on good friends to help maximise positivity and potential.

Busy Sagittarian minds will be happy minds in the year ahead. Pluto has now entered your communication sector, suggesting powerful, positive potential for all communications. Expect great support from partners, but changes for them could unsettle your routine, so be flexible. Family history may feature.

Pluto’s journey through Aquarius is here to stay. Big changes are ahead with creative projects and technology highlighted. ‘Transformation’ is your buzzword, but expect some resistance from others. When you take the reins, adopt a steady approach and consider using your influence to help others.

Saturn and Neptune moving through Pisces has coincided with physical and emotional hardships for many Pisceans. Expect better conditions this year, especially from late March. The positive Jupiter influence will help boost creativity and romance from June. Careful budgeting is required for home decorating, musical and theatrical interests.

NOTHING BEATS

Peninsula-grown

IT’S PART OF THE PENINSULA IDENTITY: THE FARM GATE, ROADSIDE STALL, AND PICK-YOUR-OWN CHERRIES IN SPRING AND THE BIG, JUICY STRAWBERRIES THAT ARE RIPE AND READY FOR PICKING NOW.

One of our best-loved pick-your-own experiences is Rocky Creek Farm. The Gallace family tend different varieties of strawberries and other berries. It’s a family affair wandering the rows, looking for the ripest strawberries, raspberries and blueberries. Visit the café and produce store at 244 Shands Road, Main Ridge, for a fun and affordable day outdoors.

Another colourful crop ready to harvest is sunflowers planted on a beautiful farm with spectacular views to Phillip Island. In spring, Jay and Nick Young, at Flinders Farm Gate, planted 300,000 seeds that have grown into sunflowers more than a metre tall, with deep yellow and black blooms as big as a dinner plate. Their range of pick-your-own includes about 2500 stunning dahlias and hectares of different garlic varieties, which are harvested at the end of summer and then dried to cure. Follow them on Insta @flindersfarmgate

Another great fruit-based farm gate is Balnarring Preserves. A few years ago, passionate grower Melissa Perkins started selling a few jars of excess jams from a redpainted box outside her farm at 13 Turners Rd.

Today, she harvests blueberries from more than 2500 plants to make freeze-dried fruit. She also picks stone fruit, figs, berries and flowers, and makes a range of fruit leathers, preserves, and award-winning cordials. Balnarring Preserves are sold at the best local food stores, but Melissa still stocks her stall – a rustic corrugated iron-topped stand perched between two old stringybarks – with her full range.

Out in the bays, the mussels are plump and sweet, with summer being the perfect time to get a feed from small-scale producer Dromana Mussels. They’re grown in the cool, clean water off Safety Beach and are known for their large size, heavy weight, and succulent flesh. Steamed in a pot or cooked straight on the barbie, they’re perfect with a chilled glass of Peninsula pinot gris. They are harvested and sold within hours at Peninsula Fresh Seafood near the Dromana Drive-In at Unit 2/10 Thomson Tce. Over in Flinders is

Harris – aka Harry Mussels – selling direct from his boat on Flinders Pier and cooked from his little food van, affectionately known as La Conchilia, on The Esplanade.

Wherever you get your produce this summer, make sure you put some Peninsula-grown food on your family’s plates.

Peninsula’s

Top Drops

This month I wanted to share my experience of a recent wine tour with my family and friends. We had a few stops planned for the day, but I will highlight a couple of these places because where they are based is very much a destination in itself.

I am referring to Dromana Industrial Estate – more affectionally known as Dromana Habitat. The estate is home to such wellknown names such as Jetty Road Brewery, JimmyRum, TWØBAYS Brewing Co, Bass

moving to the

several years later. I remember going to the Red

site back then; I even did a gin-making class there.

Anyway, despite all the cracker gins Bass & Flinders makes and the ginmaking class, it also has a bar, seating indoors and out, and a recently

& Flinders, Mr Little Beverage Co, and Little Rebel Coffee.
Bass & Flinders was founded in Red Hill,
Habitat
Hill

opened upstairs area. So you can sit and try a tasting paddle of gins with matching tonic waters, or have a cocktail like I did. It even does a gin high tea, which is basically a G&T/gin paddle with mixers and an impressive tier of sweet and savoury treats, with some of the sweet treats made using its gins. For the record, I had a cocktail called Botanicals in Bloom.

We then visited Mr Little Beverage Co, which has been making cider since 2014. I haven’t had a cider since my days of living in London, but these local gems made with Peninsula apples surprised me and had enough acidity to keep them fresh. Mr Little has now expanded its range to include flavoured ciders and vodka.

There are even some wineries tucked away in this little precinct: Rahona Valley and Tiger Rhino Bear. Rahona

is the specialist sparkling wine producer on the Peninsula and works collaboratively with many Victorian wineries to produce top sparkling wines – as well as its own, of course.

Tiger Rhino Bear is a little winery and cellar door tucked away around the corner from Mr Little Cider but has loads of charm and cool labels too. You will have to go visit it to uncover the meaning behind the label and name, hence the charm.

Check them all out or come in and ask me at Dan’s, as we stock a few of their products too.

Until next time, enjoy your tour of the Peninsula and support local.

TAR & ROSES

Tar & Roses has been crafting premium wines in central Victoria since 2006. The founding partnership of Don Lewis and Narelle King began when they were making wine together in Spain, forging the idea to make wines from Mediterranean varietals such as tempranillo, sangiovese, pinot grigio, and nebbiolo – the descriptor of which gave Tar & Roses its name.

In 2021, Narelle wanted to get into chardonnay and pinot noir, noting the Peninsula was the best place for cool-climate varietals. With four vintages from Main Ridge now under their belt, the time has come to open their second cellar door at Flinders, where they’ll be offering structured tastings of their much-revered wines from the Peninsula, Victoria, Spain and Italy.

Some towns had a massive amount of interest, but unfortunately finding a venue proved too difficult this time around. Next time we might just bring a stage on the back of a truck.”

TWENTY-FIVE KILOMETRES FROM THE ABORIGINAL COMMUNITY OF WARMUN, THE LUSH KIMBERLEY

CATTLE STATION TEXAS DOWNS IS HOME TO MANY SIGNIFICANT ROCK ART SHELTERS.

In 2019, State Library of WA photographer Darren Clark described both the extent of these sites and their imagery as "breathtaking". "The oranges, blacks and cream-coloured rocks are overpoweringly beautiful . . . multi-layered paintings depict strange creatures – spirit men, giant kangaroos, lizards.”

Senior Warmun artist Patrick Mung Mung, 76, grew up on this country learning traditional ways, stock work and painting from his father and other senior men. Its traditional Gidja name is Ngargaroon – the subject of many of Mung Mung's paintings.

Now Mung Mung's paintings feature in an exhibition with four other artists from Texas Downs: the late Churchill Cann, midcareer painters Mark Nodea and April Nulgit, and third-generation painter Sevanna Carrington, aged 25. Their many-hued, textured ochres depict aspects of their lands and creation sites.

Ngargaroon (Texas Downs) features in Everywhen's extensive Summer Collector's Show of more than 30 paintings, works on paper and sculptures by leading founding artists and contemporary talents of First Nations art from 1997 to 2024.

Earliest is a 1997 etching by the Kimberley's Rover Thomas, and the most recent is a painting by 37-year-old Pitjantjatjara artist Janice Stanley, whose work was recently acquired by Australian Parliament House in Canberra.

Others include the late Nyapanyapa Yunupingu, a leading bark artist from NE Arnhem Land, whose textural ochres are acclaimed for their subtle abstract design; and the groundbreaking, award-winning late Pitjantjatjara painter Tiger Palpatja, who started painting in 2004 at the age of 85. His glowing colours and layered whites depict an ancient rock hole and the mythical water snake, or wanampi, that created it.

Other founding artists include Freddie Timms, Billy Thomas, Wawiriya Burton, Eileen Stevens and Pepai Jangala Carroll.

Contemporary stars include Anita Pumani, Bugai Whyoulter, Debra Nakamarra, Doris Bush Nungarrayi, Michelle Lewis, and many more.

The Summer Collector's Show 2025, including Ngargaroon, runs until February 2.

Baluk is a local Bunurong and Boonwurrung word meaning ‘many’ or ‘group of people’ and reflects the collective strength of our artists and their work.

Step inside our gallery and you’ll find an incredible range of artwork – from vibrant paintings and sculptures to intricate jewellery, each piece telling its own story. Baluk Arts also offers workshops and exhibitions, giving locals and visitors a unique way to

connect with the Peninsula’s rich cultural heritage.

Whether you’re looking for meaningful art or just want to experience something new, Baluk Arts is the place to be. We also have an exciting new range of jewellery that just arrived. Drop by and discover the powerful stories and talents of our First Nations artists.

MOTH

FLIES THE FLAG FOR OUR MUSOS

MUSIC ON THE HILL, THE COMMUNITY MUSIC EVENT THAT RECENTLY CELEBRATED 10 YEARS OF BRINGING SINGERSONGWRITERS AND BANDS TO PENINSULA AUDIENCES, PLANS TO SHOWCASE LOCAL ARTISTS FOR MOST OF ITS 2025 SHOWS.

The volunteer-run promoter/presenter recently received a Mornington Peninsula Shire Performance Arts Development Grant, which will provide local musicians with opportunities to play support sets for MOTH’s national headline acts.

“The Peninsula is blessed with so much musical talent,” said MOTH founder and curator Robin Griffiths. “I’m excited to be able to give local singersongwriters and bands exposure to new markets, which will assist them to develop their craft, promote their musical offerings and hopefully help sell recorded music and merchandise.”

MOTH recently received its third Music Victoria Award nomination for Best Small Venue, and it regularly sells out its monthly shows. It has hosted such artists as Archie Roach, The Teskey

Brothers, Dan Sultan, Ella Hooper, David Bridie, Ed Kuepper and Grace Cummings.

Robin attributes the venue’s ability to attract such a high calibre of artist to the respectful audience it has cultivated; the MOTH ‘listening room’ and audience are well-known in the industry. “There’s no chatting during the performances, which the artists love,” he said. “I get requests from acts from all over Australia and even international artists who want to include MOTH on their Australian tours.”

For many years, MOTH’s home was the Red Hill Pavilion, and it is currently based at the Shed Theatre at The Pig and Whistle in Main Ridge. MOTH will also be trying out other local venues, including the new Flinders Civic Hall.

Upcoming shows at MOTH include:

Friday, January 3, Steph Strings with Rae Santos

Friday, February 7, Matt Joe Gow with Dan Webster and Emily Lawler

Friday, February 14, Sweet Talk with The Bloody Norahs

Friday, March 7, Don’t Thank Me, Spank Me with Maxon

For bookings and more information, go to www.musiconthehill.com.au, and check out MOTH on YouTube at https:// bit.ly/moth25. MOTH’s supported by Mornington Peninsula Shire.

Flinders Fringe Festival

Spend the last weekend of summer in style at the third annual Flinders Fringe Festival from February 21-23. This vibrant event has become a highlight of the Peninsula’s arts calendar, celebrating local talent and community.

Environmental themes take centre stage this year, led by LIMB: Ode to the Trees. This multidisciplinary theatrical performance, supported by the Mornington Peninsula Shire Performing Arts Development Grant program, blends dance, text, live music, puppetry and projection.

Presented by creative director and choreographer Sally Grage-

Moore, musical director and composer Poul Grage, writer and actor Carole Patullo, and master puppet artist Ian Cuming, LIMB: Ode to the Trees is more than a performance; it’s a celebration of life’s interconnectedness and a call to appreciate and protect the environment.

Bringing our history to life with music

Acclaimed guitarists Slava and Leonard Grigoryan will perform their groundbreaking show This Is Us: A Musical Reflection of Australia at Frankston Arts Centre as part of the 2025 Season. This extraordinary performance weaves music and history into an evocative journey through Australia’s rich and complex heritage.

In This Is Us, the Grigoryan Brothers present a suite of 18 original compositions inspired by objects from the National Museum of Australia’s vast collection. Each piece responds to a specific artefact, ranging from a 65,000-yearold ochre from the Madjedbebe rock shelter to a cricket bat belonging to Sir Donald Bradman.

These items trace Australia’s story from its Indigenous roots to contemporary society. Accompanying the music are high-definition 3D projections of the objects, creating a powerful and immersive experience for audiences. This performance marks a new direction for the guitar masters, featuring an entire program of

original compositions written during lockdown while they lived in separate states. “We chose objects that try to represent some of our First Nations history as well as colonisation, migration, innovation, and stories of love and loss,” they said. “We were deeply moved by all of them.”

Audiences can expect an emotional celebration of Australia’s history, where music and storytelling intertwine to offer a fresh perspective on the nation’s past and present.

This Is Us: A Musical Reflection of Australia comes to Frankston Arts Centre on Saturday, March 1. Tickets: www.thefac.com.au or phone 9784 1060.

January in the garden with Diggers

The garden is calling Heronswood

105 Latrobe Parade, Dromana Garden and nursery Open 7 days, 10am – 5pm

Recent hot weather and unusually high humidity has led to an abundance of growth for both gardens and weeds. Try to spend a few minutes a day hand-weeding to prevent them from taking over your garden, path or driveway.

Tomatoes are in full swing and what a treat it is to have flavoursome tommies on hand, fresh from the garden. If you did not grow your own, try to visit a farmers market to savour the flavour of these heirlooms for yourself.

If you are a tomato grower, high humidity increases the likelihood of fungal attack, so remove the lower leaves from your tomatoes to allow adequate air flow around the base of the plant, and always water the roots and not the foliage. Treat all plant foliage with a seaweed solution to improve resistance. If powdery mildew is present, spray early with a 1-part milk to 9-parts water solution.

Fruit tree harvest continues and your larder should be brimming with peaches, apricots, nectarines and plums. Look for ways to maximise your productivity with jams, jellies, sauces and preserved fruit.

If your apples and pears have stopped growing and are starting to harden off, it’s time for summer pruning. Pruned now, fruit trees are shaped for structure, rather than winter pruning, which encourages renewed growth.

Bees and other beneficial insects are very busy at the moment. Top up water dishes for birds and bees. Bees are happiest if they have a rock they can perch on while getting a cool drink.

Keep an eye out for caterpillars, butterflies and moths. Net your crops or spray with Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt). Stay on top of weeds to reduce available habitat for pests.

Harvest crops continuously to keep plants productive. Beans are prolific now. Blanch and freeze for use throughout the year.

Jobs to do

◆ Summer prune stone fruit trees after fruiting finishes. Prune summer growth back to leaf nodes, with cuts on an angle.

◆ Prepare for garlic planting at the end of the month.

◆ Fertilise citrus and water deeply.

◆ Sow seed of Brussels sprouts.

Seeds to sow

Beans, beetroot, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, carrot, celtuce, chervil, chives, corn, kale, kohlrabi, leek, lettuce, radish, rhubarb, silverbeet, spring onion, swede, turnip.

Scan the QR code for a  full list of jobs to do in the garden this January.

The 81-year-old retired librarian cares for her 89-year-old husband, Graeme, who has vascular dementia. “It’s tough,” she says, “but I am making the best of the situation.”

Kay and Graeme have been married for 28 years and share a big, blended family. Over the years they’ve travelled widely, including caravanning around Australia, and have shared many adventures. They love their home, and Kay especially enjoys working in her garden, knitting and reading. With her dog in tow, she and her neighbour go for a 6km walk every morning. “We talk about anything and everything and have a bit of a giggle,” she says.

Kay is quick to admit she’d be lost without the respite care they receive through Graeme’s government-funded home care package with Uniting AgeWell. “The staff at Uniting AgeWell

are absolutely brilliant. I cannot fault them on anything. They are always there when we need them. The care workers are so kind.”

Kay and Graeme get help around the house. Graeme goes on bus outings each week with Uniting AgeWell, and a care worker accompanies him to a nearby swim centre for exercise physiology in the pool. This gives Kay precious time out to recharge her batteries. “I use the time to play golf,” she says. “In summer I play lawn bowls too. I also like volunteering at the local op shop.”

Uniting AgeWell provides a continuum of care on the Peninsula, including social support, dementia-specific programs, home care services, and also residential care at Andrew Kerr Care Community in Mornington. Chat to our friendly staff on 1300 783 435.

YOUR RETIREMENT IS IN YOUR HANDS

As people age, the idea of retirement becomes increasingly important. Retirement is often seen as a time to step away from the pressures of work and embrace a more leisurely and fulfilling lifestyle. However, the decision on where to live during this phase is crucial and can have a profound impact on your quality of life.

Factors such as accessibility, social opportunities, health care and the level of independence are all important elements to consider. Whether you opt to age in place, join an independent living community or explore assisted living or specialised care, the goal is to find an environment that supports your physical, emotional and social needs.

In 1980, the Jacobsen family initiated the development

of Village Glen with a clear vision: to provide retirees with independence, freedom, security, and the opportunity to forge new friendships, all while receiving support from caring and professional staff.

At Village Glen, a vibrant village community life awaits you. A ninehole golf course, state-of-the-art clubhouse, spa and swimming pool, residents’ workshop, sports building, vegetable garden, and bowls and croquet lawns make up some of the first-class amenities. Low-impact activities like yoga, tai chi, water aerobics and hydrotherapy cater to all levels of mobility, and a dedicated craft centre offering mosaics, pottery and patchwork and more will ensure your days are as full as you want them to be.

Investing in Village Glen is a wise choice, offering not only exceptional services but also various pricing options to suit different budgets and multiple contractual choices. It’s home to more than 800 happy retirees, and new residents are often heard to say: “We should have done it sooner.”

So don’t leave it too late; plan ahead and book a tour to start imagining where you might be in two years. Email katie.eldridge@ villageglen.com.au or phone 5986 4455.

Help your garden

Keep Its Cool

WHILE WE ARE ENJOYING A NICE COOLDOWN OVER THIS WARM HOLIDAY PERIOD, BEAR IN MIND THE NEEDS OF YOUR FOOD CROPS AND OTHER PLANTS. AN EXTRA SPLASH OF WATER HERE OR THERE MAY NOT BE ENOUGH TO WARD OFF THE EXTREME TEMPERATURES DURING THE NEXT FEW MONTHS.

Unprotected soils will have become hydrophobic by now and will not be absorbing as much water as you think. That means the feeding roots of most of your plants may be hot and dry, leading to a lack of uptake of water and nutrients and a decline in your plants’ health.

To protect your gardens properly you need to ensure you can deliver water as directly to the roots of your plants as possible, and as you’ve heard many times before, mulch heavily. A well-functioning drip irrigation system and a thick layer of protective mulch will be a big step in helping your plants survive 30C-plus temperatures.

On the hotter days, however, some physical shading will help even more. The hot northerlies accompanied by the heat from the sun won’t only temporarily wilt some of your crops, they can burn the leaves, stems and fruit.

Don’t be shy to throw a sheet over your prized tomatoes and eggplants, and if you have a good harvest of apples hanging on the tree or some midseason peaches and nectarines, give them the sheet treatment too. And keep the water up. Aside from the more extreme temperatures, most of our plants

will be thriving in the sun this season. The harvests coming from the blackberries and raspberries have been plentiful, and the apricots couldn’t be more delicious. In the vegetable garden the bounties are also coming in regularly. As well as the tomatoes and basil, the zucchinis, cucumbers, asparagus, carrots and potatoes are all providing some tasty meals for family and friends.

If you are currently growing your own food at home, you will know what I am talking about. If, however, you have not yet got organised to grow some of your own food or have just dipped your toes in the water, seize the opportunity now to get a few things growing. You can still plant seedlings of your favourite summer veggies, including salad greens, root crops like radish and beetroot, beans, spring onions and spuds. And of course any herb would love to be part of your garden at this time. Just look after them.

This is a super time of the year to grow your own food. We just have to remember that our gardens enjoy a cool break as much as we do.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

Peninsula company helps residents save thousands

Local heating and cooling company

Peninsula Heating & Cooling Solutions has joined the Victorian Energy Upgrades program, which aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and promote energy efficiency.

This initiative offers significant rebates for Mornington Peninsula homeowners looking to upgrade their old gas heating systems to more efficient alternatives – a timely exercise in the current economy.

Homeowners can receive rebates of up to $4000 when they replace gas ducted heaters with reverse-cycle ducted inverters. Similarly, upgrading to a reverse-cycle split system can yield savings of up to $1000 when replacing

gas wall heaters. These upgrades not only contribute to a decrease in energy consumption, they can also lead to annual savings of up to $1000 on energy bills. Additionally, modern systems offer improved control, better air quality and quieter operation, enhancing overall home comfort.

Heating and cooling systems are a significant contributor to household energy use, accounting for about 40 per cent of the total energy consumption in Australian homes. By upgrading to energy-efficient heating and cooling systems, homeowners can drastically reduce their energy bills and lower their carbon footprint, making a meaningful impact on environmental sustainability.
