Art, stories, movement and play at Little Learners Playgroup The first five years of a child’s life are pivotal, with research showing that up to 90 per cent of a child’s brain development occurs before a child begins primary school. Toorak College believes it is never too early to start learning, which is why it developed the Little Learners Playgroup. Little Learners is designed to meet the unique developmental needs of two and three-year-old children. Through a rich and diverse play-based program with a heavy focus on creative arts, music, movement, stories and experiments, children have the opportunity to explore all areas of the Early Years learning

framework while developing relationships. Melissa Schoorman, Deputy Principal and Head of Wardle House at Toorak College, believes the more knowledge and stimuli you can present to a child before primary school, the more nourished it will be for years to come. “At Little Learners, children, parents and educators work together to broaden a child’s knowledge and develop their gross and fine motor, social and emotional skills. Our Little Learners develop a strong sense of curiosity and creativity and learn how to effectively communicate and work as a team. It is the development of these skills within a fun and supportive environment that are the foundation for success at school and beyond.” Ph: 9708 8222

Toorak College believes that attending playgroup is a vital part of a child’s development and it is for this reason that members of the community are invited to try Little Learners at no cost throughout Term 2. Little Learners Playgroup runs on Wednesday and Friday mornings throughout the school term. Ritchies Village Centre still the heart of Mount Eliza

Built in 1990 on a paddock behind an original petrol station, Ritchies IGA made a significant impact on the centre of Mount Eliza Village. Heralding a new era in shopping and dining out, the centre included the then hugely popular restaurant, Pizza Piazza. Ritchies IGA has been the anchor tenant since the centre opened, and while there has also always been a pharmacy, the other shops and cafes have come and gone over the years.

6

Issue 45 • Autumn-Winter 2020

After a change of the centre’s ownership in 2012, the decision was made to fully upgrade the building, which was by now looking jaded. The following year saw a major refurbishment, extending the supermarket and installing new flooring, skylights, bathrooms and paintwork to create a warmer, more welcoming environment. At this time the supermarket was also fully upgraded and the new-style Ritchies IGA was opened, leading the way in boutique-style supermarkets and incorporating gourmet products.

Ph: 9708 8222

Formerly The Strand Centre, it was during the redevelopment that a more appropriate and relevant name should be The Ritchies Village Centre, and that final stage of rebranding completed the new-look centre. Now a popular destination for customers of all ages, the excellent mix of retailers and service providers, ease of parking, children’s play area and comfortable seating all make The Ritchies Village Centre a popular shopping destination in the heart of Mount Eliza.

Mount Eliza goes pink for breast cancer The girls from Two Travelling Planners are turning Mount Eliza pink for October, so now’s the time to get on board to help them raise money for breast cancer patients and the families who support them. Pink Up Mount Eliza is part of an initiative by the McGrath Foundation, which raises money to expand its Breast Care Nurses program. Bree from Two Travelling Planners explains: “The nurses provide a free service, including support and care for people with both early and metastatic breast cancer, within both the public and private health sector. They listen while offering advice and quality care. Our plans for Pink Up Mount Eliza in October include turning the village pink, a ladies’ night, a winery day, an education/health awareness evening, pink days at local schools, a gala evening and more. But we need help to do it.” This is where you come in, readers. Bree and Malene are looking for sponsorship and donations for raffles and silent auctions. They are also looking for a couple of people who might like to join the Pink Up Mount Eliza committee. If you think that’s you, then find them on social media @PinkUpMountEliza or @ TwoTravellingPlanners and get in touch. Bree concludes: “There are currently three breast care nurses funded by the McGrath Foundation on the Mornington Peninsula, which is why Pink Up Mount Eliza is being held this October. We want to educate women and men about being breast aware and to raise vital funds to see the Breast Care Nurses program expanded on the Peninsula.” What a great idea. Bring on the pink!

Mornington Peninsula Mayor Sam Hearn and Recycling Champion Lizzie Dennis are appealing to residents to recycle correctly.

Recycle right, says Lizzie When it comes to recycling, Lizzie Dennis knows her cardboard from her crockery, and she’s horrified at what some of us are putting in our bluelidded bins. As a Mornington Peninsula Shire Recycling Champion, the Somers resident has heard of disposable nappies, smashed cups and plates and even broken electrical items being put out for recycling, and this can have disastrous consequences. “People don’t always realise that just one misused recycling bin can contaminate

18

Issue 45 • Autumn-Winter 2020

a whole truck, and then the whole load has to go into landfill,” Lizzie says. “That completely cancels out the efforts of their neighbours who have done the right thing. “Life can be busy and sometimes people just don’t pay attention or are confused about what can be recycled and what can’t, but this is really important for our children, the Earth and everyone. We need to show our children that we are willing to do everything in our power to protect their future.” Ph: 9708 8222

Mornington Peninsula Mayor Sam Hearn urged all residents to familiarise themselves with how to use their bins correctly, including rinsing out containers, separating lids from containers and not putting plastic bags or other soft plastics into the recycling bin. The Shire is also inspecting recycling bins, with residents who are recycling correctly going into a monthly draw to win a $50 gift voucher. Find out more at mornpen. vic.gov.au/recycling

Business nous handed down from father to sons James and Malcolm Cameron are Peninsula boys through and through. These two brothers, who were born in NSW, moved to Victoria after their dad, Barry, was ‘poached’ by Myer in 1968. The rest is Ritchies generational supermarket history. James explains: “Dad was originally the manager of Woolworths in Double Bay then in Newcastle before coming to Melbourne, where he was given the position of supervisor for all the Myer Food Halls in Australia. Both Mal and I were still very young when we moved to the Peninsula. Dad used to tell this story of how he was trying to convince the heads of Myer to open up a supermarket in Bayside in Frankston because he could see the potential, but they wouldn’t have it. He was such a smart businessman. He brought the Target concept back from the US after studying there in 1969 too.” But the ever-innovative Barry Cameron had bigger fish to fry than running someone else’s store. James continues: “He resigned from Myer and went into partnership with the then owner of Frankston Ritchies, Nelson Morris. That was in 1971. They went on to open Ritchies Towerhill on the corner of Golf

Links and Hastings roads in 1972 before securing the Ritchies Mount Eliza store. Dad died when he was 50 and Mal, Mum – Elisabeth Cameron – Peter Carson and I were left in charge. I’ll never forget the day when Mal and I drove to Deniliquin to visit the landowner, George Demaine, to secure the lease for the Mount Eliza store. Here we were, these early-20s pimple-faced kids trying to do a deal, but we got it done.” Both the Cameron boys have been working since they were about 10 and are committed to careers that are forged from the ground up. They also have a sister, Frances, who is not involved in the business. Malcolm and Fred Harrison are Ritchies’ longest standing employees, celebrating 45 years of service, while James is not far behind. James continues: “We grew up in Frankston South. Mal went to Frankston High and I went to Mount Eliza High. I was managing the liquor department at the Mount Eliza Ritchies by the time I was 21, had an operational sabbatical and am now a company director while Malcolm is currently chief financial officer and director. He and his wife Karen still live in Mount Eliza and I’m there at least once a week. We are still a family-run operation and many of our employees have been with us for decades. store has moved and certainly evolved since those early days but the service stays the same. There’s still plenty of opportunities for staff to rise through the ranks. This year marks 150 years of Ritchies supermarkets. Pool registration is a real lifesaver Do you have a pool or spa? Then it’s time to register it with Mornington Peninsula Shire. Under new safety standards introduced by the State Government, you’re required to register your pool or spa by June 1. A one-off registration fee will be required: $79 if your pool or spa was built before December 1 last year, or $31.80 if it was built after that date. Failing to register is an offence that currently attracts a $330.44 fine. After registering, you’ll receive a letter from the Shire confirming the next step: getting your pool or spa barrier checked by a qualified surveyor. You will then be required to engage a registered building surveyor or building inspector to inspect and certify your pool or spa’s safety barrier every four years. The fee to lodge the Certificate of Compliance is $20.40. Mornington Peninsula Shire Mayor Sam Hearn said: “These new requirements introduced by the State Government are designed to save the lives of young children through improving compliance with safety barrier requirements.” To register and learn more, visit mornpen.vic.gov.au/poolregister

MSO brings Melbourne’s finest musicians to Frankston Sometimes it takes the perception of an outsider to see what is great about a culture. When Czech composer Antonin Dvorák went to the US at the end of the 19th century, he was an immigrant thrown into a new world full of new sounds. Out of that experience, he wrote one of the world’s most beloved orchestral works.

Dvorák’s Symphony No. 9, subtitled ‘From the New World’, has since become one of the world’s most beloved orchestral works. Already a celebrated composer in Europe, Dvorák was hired to run the National Conservatory of Music in New York to help American composers find their own

voices. Dvorák recognized a rich tradition sitting under his nose, one that most American composers seemed blind to. He wove American roots music into his vast symphonic canvas, celebrating a musical melting pot in his New World symphony. Featuring soaring woodwinds and deep, resonant brass, Dvorák’s Symphony No. 9 melodies were inspired by Native American and African-American music, evoking the beauty of wide-open spaces and a connection to the land. With its soulful lament and lingering echoes of darker memories, it is no wonder this work is a ‘must-see’ of classical music fans everywhere. Issue 45 • Autumn-Winter 2020

On Friday, May 15, primary school students across Australia will hit the footpaths for Walk Safely to School Day. Now in its 21st year, WSTSD encourages all primary school children to walk or commute safely to school. This community event seeks to promote road safety, health, public transport and the environment. WSTSD endeavours to encourage parents and carers to walk to school with primary school-age children and reinforce safe pedestrian behaviour, create regular walking habits, promote the health benefits of walking, and help children develop vital road-crossing skills. WSTSD’s key objective is to ensure that children up to 10 years old hold an adult’s hand when crossing the road. It also promotes the use of public

transport to cut air pollution created by motor vehicles and reduce traffic congestion. There is also a focus on promoting and informing parents, carers, teachers and children of the significant psychical, mental and social benefits that can be achieved through regular walking. WSTSD is supported by the Federal Government as well as all state, territory and local governments. Why not make the kids a healthy breakfast before you set off? And if you have to drive, try to park the car at least 10 minutes away from the school and walk the rest of the way. Keeping it clean in Mount Eliza Mount Eliza has had an active Beach Patrol group for a couple of years now and the results have been amazing. Operating under the Beach Control Australia umbrella, community involvement has been consistent and many of the monthly beach cleans have led to noticeably cleaner local beaches and a general rise in single-plastic pollution awareness. The beach cleans performed by Mount Eliza residents of all age groups, but especially many families with children, have not only been great for the environment but have led to real community-based action to keep the beaches of Mount Eliza clean all year round. Beach Patrol and Waste Wise Mornington Peninsula organisers invite all Mount Eliza residents to become stewards of our beautiful bays and surrounds. We can all make a difference by picking up a few pieces of litter every time we visit the beach or go for a walk in a local park. Birte Moliere, from Waste Wise Mornington Peninsula, says: “It’s the little things that each of us do that add up, and it’s a real success story when it comes to litter found along our beaches in Mount Eliza. They are in pretty good shape in that respect, MtElizaVillageMag

but there is still a lot of work to be done behind the scenes. We need to reduce waste at the source and say no to single-use plastics. Most plastic items are discarded in landfill or in the environment after a single use, yet they can take thousands of years to decompose, if at all. It’s not something our kids and grandkids should have to inherit.” Buy a reusable coffee cup; say no to plastic bags and straws; take your own containers to the butcher; and ditch Styrofoam – it doesn’t get recycled and is banned in many other countries. If there is no recycling bin nearby in the village, just take it home with you to recycle it rather than adding to Victoria’s landfill problem. Another thing you can do is take your soft plastic wrappers – think chocolates, ice-creams and chips – to Woolworths for recycling via the REDcycle and REPLAS program and let them be upcycled into park benches or playgrounds. “Ultimately, reducing the amount of waste we create is pivotal,” Birte says. “It’s a big challenge but the good news is it can be overcome. Check our @ Waste Wise Peninsula for ideas and inspiration and don’t forget to pick up a few pieces of litter every time you get out into nature.”

Insurance Brokers

How insurance brokers can benefit small businesses Small business owners tend to be born optimists – passionate, resilient and driven – but running a small business can certainly come with its own risks and challenges. That’s why it pays to have an insurance broker in your corner who can help accurately identify and protect the day-to-day risks your business faces. Whether you run a café, brewery, photography studio, transport business or B&B, finding the right level of insurance should be top priority to ensure you are properly protected. However, insurance can be incredibly complicated to fully

understand due to the broad range of risks faced, the various packages and costs available, and even the fine print that define the terms and conditions. Brokers are independent of any insurer and can therefore explain aspects of your policy or note things that you may not have considered. Compared to buying directly, brokers can offer a wide range of plans, tailor packages to meet your specific business needs, make impartial recommendations, meet face-to-face on request, and even negotiate better premiums or conditions. Additionally, larger and more specialised brokers have the capacity to offer a range of value-added services such

as assistance with claims, employee education and contract renewal support, all of which are often included at no extra cost. So, whatever your small business, it’s worth investing a little time and effort into finding an insurance broker that’s right for you. Double the doggie love in Mount Eliza Indi and Milo like to run. Run around the yard. Run around the house. The Australian kelpie and labrador retriever spend most of their time outdoors on their owner’s property in Mount Eliza having a ball. There’s the foxes to chase away and the pool to jump into when everyone else is having fun, and even though Milo the labrador has arthritis, she can still keep up when she needs to. Owner Leanne Ellerton, from Pop & Selma’s Café, explains: “I’ve had both of them since they were puppies. Milo is a rescue dog from the country and we chose Indi because she was just so cute. They are both great guard dogs. We have chickens and they protect them from the foxes. We also have fruit trees on the property and you’ll often find Indi eating fruit. She’s a funny dog. She always follows the same route when running around the house and is a great protector of small children when they go in the pool – but she won’t go in if there’s a crowd. Milo on the other hand will jump in no matter how many people there are and loves to ‘herd’ people out the front door.” Sounds like both dogs are keen to get involved in anything that’s going on. Leanne continues: “They are. They get along together pretty well but can get a little snooty with each other too. My partner, Roger Quinn, built a double kennel for them outside and they always fight to see who can get in first to grab the best position. Inside they sit on their mat together like best friends in front of the fire.” Now that’s perfect Mount Eliza pooch behaviour. Have a pet who is a regular visitor to the village? James Farquharson, left, and Corporal Adam Mazon

James Farquharson with some of his artwork

The invisible cost of trauma

Mount Eliza resident James Farquharson is a house husband, and he’s OK with that. At 52, this exAustralian Army member and now PTSD sufferer was born in Canberra and has been living on the Peninsula for the past 10 years. Life hasn’t been easy, but as he puts it: “My wife and I are both so stubborn that we made a pact to get through this.” And they are. Now the president of the Mornington RSL, James still has the gift of a giggle, albeit one tinged with a sense of wry acceptance. He explains: “I’m TPI – totally and permanently incapacitated – so I take care of the house while my wife Miffy

teaches at Woodleigh. It’s been extremely difficult for her and our two girls, Molly and Jesse.” James joined the Army Reserve when he was at Melbourne University studying secondary teaching, and went on to the Royal Military College, Duntroon, where he developed chronic fatigue syndrome after contracting glandular fever, and became depressed. He continues: “I quit the Army only to find later on that I hadn’t been discharged and had been posted to Queensland. They had marked me absent without leave. The Army Reserve is deployed in civilian time of need and low-level operations, but my Reserve unit was deployed to East Timor in 2002, which was the first time this had been done since the Vietnam War. I was also

stationed at the Dili Embassy just after the first Bali bombing. My PTSD was triggered by my deployment and the loss of my mate Greg Sher, who was killed in Afghanistan. It’s hard to get help because you are supposed to be tough, but sometimes you just can’t be.” No, you can’t, James, but life continues and we try to find ways of moving forward. For James, this means painting, sailing and staying close to family and mates. He concludes: “I get out on the water once a week, which is very calming; I am doing a visual art course at Chisholm in Frankston and do some part-time work for friends. I’m getting help.” Anzac Day is April 25, readers. Remember it. Remember them.

Our own roamin’ gnome comes home Frankie’s back! Yes, everyone’s favourite gnome has returned from a global adventure that took him to New Zealand, China, Hong Kong, England, France, Italy and the US. Last month, he announced on Frankston City Council’s Facebook page that he had signed a four-year lease on a new plinth at the corner of Hastings Rd and Moorooduc Highway, next to Monash University. “When I arrived back following my world travels, to be honest I felt a little lost,” Frankie said. “I knew I wanted to once again call Frankston home, but I wasn’t sure where or how to make it happen. I was speaking to a friend about my conundrum and he suggested that perhaps I rent a place for a few years and suss out where I want to be long-term – so that’s what I’ve done.”

48

Issue 45 • Autumn-Winter 2020

The nomadic gnome explored many landmarks, including the Eiffel Tower, the Leaning Tower of Pisa, the Statue of Liberty, and the Great Wall of China. Frankston City Mayor Sandra Mayer was delighted to have Frankie back. “Frankie has become a local legend and a favourite with residents, particularly children. He just makes you smile.” So where to after your lease is up, Frankie? “I have no idea. This world is full of beautiful places and people. However, there’s no place quite like Frankston City.”

MasterChef hopeful plates up her second course Mount Eliza resident Dani Venn is Back To Win. You may remember her from Season 3 of Channel 10’s powerhouse creative cooking show MasterChef, where she came in fourth place, but this time round she is competing against a bevy of brilliant chefs who are bringing their A-game and the heat is on.

50

Issue 45 • Autumn-Winter 2020

Dani explains: “I was in shock when I got a call from the producer who said, ‘Are you sitting down?’ before letting me know I was going to be part of Season 12. It’s been incredibly positive from the outset. MasterChef is an amazing brand and being in Season 3 really changed my life. I went on to host my own show, Weekend Feast, did a radio gig on Nova FM in Melbourne and travelled across the country and internationally as an ambassador for various brands. I mean, what an opportunity.” Dani continues: “It’s been tougher for me this time because I’ve got kids and it’s hard to leave them behind. My focus on food has really changed since becoming a mother. I’m very concerned with how food affects general health and well-being. I’m the director of Eat it Up Creative and the founder of The Wholehearted Cook. I’m also currently working on my first bricks-and-mortar food business, Go Go Bowl, which will focus on healthy fast food.” How does this bubbly beach-going chef think the public will respond to the synthesis of new and old faces this season? She concludes: “I think they’ll love it. The new judges are very experienced and the show has evolved. This series is celebrating produce we have in our own back yard. It’s a new chapter for Australian cuisine and we all want to win it.” Tune in to see Dani whip up a Mornington Peninsula storm in the MasterChef kitchen this month. Game on, people. Game on. COMPETENT, CAPABLE, ACTIVE LEARNERS – Early Childhood at Woodleigh School Woodleigh School’s Early Childhood Centres are communities where children are viewed as competent, capable, active learners. We ‘Value Childhood’ and have high expectations for all children, families and educators, and operate with the belief that learning can happen anywhere, anytime.

Woodleigh School’s Early Childhood Program is carefully planned to offer children open-ended learning experiences that are both challenging and reflect their interests. MtElizaVillageMag

Value Childhood is an understanding of how special, unique and fleeting childhood is. It is letting children be children; knowing the educational and social importance of play and discovery – the value of imagination and struggle. It is the development of individual learning programs that challenge and engage. Where students’ best efforts are expected and acknowledged, both in and beyond the classroom. We believe that children learn in collaboration with others. Along with their families and educators, children attending our Minimbah and Penbank Centres belong to a community of learners who work in an optimistic, progressive environment. Our preschool provides inclusive programs that recognise the varied cultural backgrounds, abilities, interests, needs and learning styles of all children. We believe children learn best through meaningful play. Our program is play-based and child-centred. It offers children the opportunity to make choices,

take responsible risks, learn in collaboration with others and develop their curiosity and thinking skills. All are skills that we believe are essential for lifelong learning and nurturing a fulfilled and confident child. There is a genuine sense of mutual respect between staff, children and families and this is reflected in the strong caring community who share a common goal: to give children the fundamental right to an education that prepares them for life as well as school. If you would like to know more about Woodleigh School’s Early Childhood programs at our Minimbah (Frankston South) and Penbank (Moorooduc) Campuses, please contact our enrolments office on 5971 6100 or email enrol@woodleigh.vic. edu.au DAVID BURTON - Acting Principal WOODLEIGH SCHOOL A: 4 85 Golf Links Rd, Langwarrin South T: 5971 6100 www.woodleigh.vic.edu.au FB: woodleighschoo1 INSTA: woodleighschool
