VISION 香港中文大学深圳校区 智慧的交流,创新,多样性与可持续性 智慧的交流,创新,多样性与可持续性,是世界頂尖学府所共享的 集体价值观,也是我们对塑造香港中文大学深圳校园的宏愿。我们 的规划履行对面向世界一流的二十一世纪研究型大学的承诺,并同 时尊重传统拥抱未来。 下列的主要构想让香港中文大学深圳校区总 体规划能够拔众出群:
• 设计环绕着活跃的康庄大道与中央绿化广场,以激活社交与智慧 的讨论。 • 一个自然与都市文化的交汇點,利用景观与建筑形式来准中自然 环境并反映都市文脉。 • 第一阶段分別由六所不同的建筑設計事務所, 在风格协调一致的 基础上,产生丰富性和多样性的校园规划. 这个联合团队让我们在 具成本及时间效益的条件下, 实现校方的多样化校园宏景。 • 为可持续性的校园建立节能,低碳设计与社会责任的基准 。

THE CHINESE UNIVERSITY OF HONG KONG, SHENZHEN: INTELLECTUAL EXCHANGE. INNOVATION. DIVERSITY. SUSTAINABILITY. Intellectual Exchange. Innovation. Diversity. Sustainability. These are the collective values that great Universities share, and the drivers that shape our vision for The Chinese University of Hong Kong’s Shenzhen Campus. Our proposal builds upon The Chinese University of Hong Kong and City of Shenzhen’s commitment to create a world-class 21st century research-led University that honors tradition and embraces the future. The following primary ideas distinguish the new CUHK-SZ Campus Master Plan: • A campus organized around a vibrant Promenade and central Yards, to foster social exchange and intellectual discourse. • A nexus of nature and urban culture, with landscape and built forms that both respect the natural environment and reflect the urban context. • A diversity of buildings that collectively form a harmonious, rich campus environment, by a team of five internationally acclaimed architects lead by the Master Plan Architect. • A sustainable campus that establishes a benchmark for energy saving, low carbon design and social responsibility. Our proposal establishes a bridge connecting China with the world, in a Shenzhen campus that maintains its roots in Hong Kong.

一个自然与都市文化的重心:总体规划组织
A NEXUS OF NATURE AND URBAN CULTURE: MASTER PLAN ORGANIZATION
我们的香港中文大学深圳校区提案与第一期建筑设计,设想了一个能够为学生,教员与校友们提供动态学
Our proposal for the CUHK-SZ Master Plan and Phase One Architectural Design envisions a new campus and composition of buildings that that provides a dynamic learning and social environment for students, faculty, and alumni. Located at Shenzhen’s urban edge, where dense city meets Universiade Natural Park’s lush, rolling landscape and pristine lakes, the campus is a nexus of nature, urban culture, and community. Drawing inspiration from the symbolic elements of the Hong Kong campus, the identity of the Shenzhen campus is defined by a rich palette of symbolic open spaces and iconic buildings:

UPPER & LOWER CAMPUSES The upper and lower campuses are strategically located between national park and urban edge. The campuses are defined by six districts: the four Schools, the Start Zone, and the Administration zone. PROMENADE The Promenade forms the University’s primary circulation artery—an active, green campus thoroughfare for pedestrians and bicycles. Inspired by traditional Chinese garden meandering paths, the Promenade winds through the landscape of the upper, middle, and lower campuses and the six districts. The Promenade symbolically links the Shenzhen campus with the Hong Kong campus’ vibrant University Avenue.

FOCAL POINTS Each district has a focal point, an open space that becomes the symbolic and functional heart of the university. As places of student and faculty congregation, these open spaces promote communication and enliven the pursuit of knowledge. BUILDING TYPOLOGIES All buildings integrate with the campus landscape, with integral social, public spaces, and main entries along the Promenade:

The density of School & Lab buildings, organized around central courtyards, defines the campus’ urban edge – pulling city into campus. North/South oriented Housing bars create an open, porous park edge and provide views of the landscape – pulling the park into the campus. Support facilities—including the library, indoor sports complex, administration building, auditorium, and student amenities building—act as iconic landmarks along the Promenade.
LANDSCAPE Landscape plays a primary role in defining the districts: it establishes the identity, and the social and open spaces, acting as a transitional element between national park and city edge. All housing and schools are tied together with gardens that are an extension of the district landscape scheme. These gardens are transitional spaces between the Natural Park and urban edge. CIRCULATION The circulation system provides convenient, efficient, and fluid connections. The circulation connects to the existing public entries and the city’s public transit, creates a pedestrianand bicycle-friendly campus, and provides on site parking. SOCIAL SPACES Organized along the Promenade and throughout the campus, social spaces provide learning commons and free-style learning areas that promote interaction between faculty, students, and alumni. PHASING • Phase 1 - the Lower Campus: establishes the University’s presence within the city. Phase 1 is strategically located to leverage the existing campus buildings at the Start Zone and connect with public transport, in proximity to Shenzhen’s neighboring universities and urban amenities. • Phase 2 - the Upper Campus: expands the University into the Natural Park. In Phase 2, the Promenade extends to connect the Upper and Lower campuses.

Our approach brings together various architects under one vision for a diverse, yet cohesive, master plan. We have selected each architect to design a building (or buildings) based on their depth of experience and creative vision. This team of architects shares a deep personal commitment to higher education and a belief that architecture can foster interaction, collaboration, and creativity. Two principles motivated our decision to incorporate multiple architects on the team:

The University’s vision to create a new campus that is diverse and innovative. This team composition not only ensures diversity and innovation within the design of each building, but also creates an experienced and efficient team capable of meeting tight budgets, deadlines, schedules. Our belief that like great cities of the world, successful university campuses are comprised of a rich palette of buildings and open spaces – a diversity that accrues organically, over time and in waves.
Our strategy to build a team of architects allows us to realize the University’s nuanced and diverse campus vision, in a cost-effective and efficient timeframe, while maintaining the integrity of the master plan.

Home to the Chinese University of Hong Kong’s new, world-class campus, Shenzhen is the financial engine of the region at the heart of China’s Pearl River Delta. Until 1980, the city of Shenzhen was a small fishing village. Located just north of Hong Kong, Shenzhen was chosen to become China’s first Special Economic Zone and the major financial center of southern China. In just 30 years, Shenzhen has seen unprecedented growth and is now one of the fastest growing cities in the world, with a population of 11 million. Shenzhen’s proximity to Hong Kong and ambitious vision to champion growth creates a unique opportunity for The Chinese University of Hong Kong to establish a new, research-led campus for the 21st century.

Collaboration and social networking are integral to a healthy campus, which is why we consider sustainable campus planning approaches for providing comfortable, environmentally responsible indoor and outdoor space to support the academic community. Shenzhen’s warm, semi-tropical climate provides the opportunity for comfortable outdoor microclimates. We propose shading strategies from building canopies and tree planting schemes, as well as optimized building orientation to encourage breezes from prevailing winds. Green roofs that exceed the minimum requirements of Shenzhen’s green building standards will reduce the urban heat island effect. Inside buildings, we propose exceeding Shenzhen’s standards for natural ventilation and daylighting. We also propose designing individual buildings to achieve the China 3 Star green building rating benchmark.

We have proposed design and operational strategies for the master plan that would reduce operational carbon footprint of the CUHK Shenzhen campus. Carbon is a useful metric for campus planning because it encompasses energy and water and is increasingly un¬derstood by global organizations as a key concern regarding global climate change and the need to reduce environmental impacts. We do not propose a carbon neutral strategy for the master plan, as this would present economic challenges to the university unless significant external funding sources exist. Instead, we have pro¬posed a low-carbon planning approach that provides a framework for understanding how the CUHK Shenzhen campus can be devel¬oped with minimal carbon emissions from its operations from day one, but also as a guiding principal for future development and renovation projects throughout the lifetime of the campus. A low-carbon planning strategy begins with a Business-As-Usual (BAU) baseline on which we apply a series of efficiency steps that are explained in the next section.

Our approach to the energy planning for the CUHK Shenzhen campus starts first with the reduction of cooling loads through the use of passive design strategies, including good site orientation and sun shading devices. We then specify high-performance building mechanical systems fed by central utility plants that achieve with operational efficiencies as part of our low-carbon utility planning strategy. We have proposed two central utility plants for the split campus locations to provide chilled water for cooling and hot water to the campus, balancing between the diverse campus program of academic, recreational, and residential facilities. These plants will be coupled with renewable energy systems, including a combination of solar photovoltaic systems, wind turbines, and solar thermal hot water, which will reduce the campus energy demand by approximately 3% or more, as well as provide more than 10% of the campus hot water demand from renewable sources in excess of the Shenzhen green building standard.

Our proposed campus design also incorporates world’s best practice building efficiency measures, including high-efficiency lighting, such as LEDs, interior spaces with good daylighting and access to external views, and innovative façade systems with glazing that increases daylighting without sacrificing energy performance. A total campus building management control system will tie all of the energy and water systems together to improve operational performance. This control system will give the CUHK Shenzhen facilities team a clear picture of the campus’s environmental performance, which can lead to further utility cost savings in the future.

Each building will include a comprehensive building management control system to ensure the efficient operation of mechanical and lighting systems, as well as active components of the building envelope. The mechanical system will be optimized for each type of space in both buildings to deliver heating and cooling in the most effective way that allows for flexible building occupancy and operation. Lighting systems will use energy-efficient lamps, such as compact fluorescents and LEDs, occupancy sensors in individual rooms, and include daylight dimming capability in perimeter zones or spaces with skylights. Fans will be equipped with variable speed drives for further efficiency. CO2 sensors will be provided in occupied spaces so that fresh air rates can be modulated to reduce energy consumption.

Although Shenzhen benefits from significant annual rainfall, most of this occurs during the summer monsoon months. We propose to install rain gardens and swales for stormwater management, with grey water treatment systems for recycling water to use for irrigation. Outdoor spaces will be designed to increase the perviousness of the ground, including hardscape and landscape areas, so that stormwater can recharge the groundwater supply and minimize im¬pacts on piped stormwater systems. Green roofs will slow storm¬water runoff from buildings, with rainwater collection systems for every rooftop. Low-flow fixtures, including faucets, showers, and toilets, minimize potable water consumption. We also propose installing public drinking fountains with clean, potable water to reduce demand for bottled water to reduce waste.

The overall guiding transport strategy for the CUHK/SZ campus is to reduce the dependence on private cars within and around the Shenzhen University Campus, whilst promoting the use of sustain¬able transportation modes including mass public transport systems (rail and bus), cycling and walking and by making these modes easier, safer and more enjoyable to use.

Freight traffic will be separated from other campus operations and handled by a dedicated Distribution Center (DC) located close one of the site access points. Goods will be broken down here and moved to their destinations within the Campus using smaller electric service vehicles via a dedicated road network to minimize conflicts with pedestrians and cyclists.

The proposed bike sharing scheme will give students easy access to bikes across the Campus for short journeys. This system will be operated by The University and potentially provide a source of revenue that can be reinvested in maintain the Campus pathways. We propose that a pilot scheme is implemented in Phase 1 with around 200 bikes available, which could be significantly expanded in later stages if the pilot is successful. A widened pathway con¬necting the Upper and Lower Campus will provide a safe environ¬ment for walking and cycling and the provision of educational and recreational points of interest along this route will help enhance the experience of travelling between the two Campuses.

Parking Structure

The parking structures below grade will be reinforced concrete structures. Landscaping at grade level on top of the parking structure will be coordinated early, to avoid over dimensioning of the structure due to excessive load assumptions. Where other buildings sit on top of the parking structure, the column grid will be optimized to avoid costly transfer structures. A floor system on grade is recommended for the lowest floor if the water table and the soil properties allow doing so.

One of the key issues that will be addressed in the structural design of the labs is the allocation of vibration criteria to ensure proper functioning of sensitive lab equipment. We advise to define several vibration criteria since these have a direct influence on the floor system choice and cost. Less stringent requirements will result in significant savings. From a structural point of view, the most sensitive equipment wants to be placed in the basement, or lowest levels of a building. Arup will perform advanced footfall analysis to ensure that the prescribed floor systems will meet the client’s vibration requirements. Heavy equipment and special MEP requirements also need to be identified in an early stage of the design. Spans shorter than eight meter can be in steel or concrete, larger floor spans, around 10m, with stringent vibration criteria are in concrete.

The structure for the lecture halls and classrooms consists of larger free span floor systems, 10m or more, and the lateral stability system for the class rooms will address day lighting issues. Both steel and concrete can be used for this building typology.

Housing units usually have smaller floor spans, between six and eight meters. Because of the large housing area to be built in the project, the most economical floor system that meets the functional requirements will be proposed. Typically, the lateral system consists of shear walls that additionally also serve as separation walls between housing units. We propose the same structural typology for the architecturally different housing blocks to achieve a maximum economy of scale.

Library An important parameter in library design is the location of high density book storage and the live load associated with it. A close collaboration with the architect will be pursued to ensure a functional solution in the earliest stages of the project. Ideally, from a structural point of view, the book storage areas are located in a basement or lowest floor.
Sport Facilities Large column free spaces for sport facilities are preferably covered by a lightweight long span roof system, such as steel trusses. The roof geometry can be used to employ a more efficient structural system such as an arc or vault. Special attention will be given to the floor system to avoid vibration issues in work out spaces.

Organized along the promenade, major campus facilities are located in key positions to function as gathering spaces and focal elements of the master plan. Flanking the main quads the Amenities Building and Auditorium serve as multi directional gateways linking the colleges and schools. Further east, the Administration and Staff Housing define the campus edge, linking the University to its surrounding context, while at the same time distinguishing it as an exceptional place of higher education. The President’s Lodge, nestled into the hillside, provides a private sanctuary for the President’s family that maintains connection to the campus through discrete paths and a commanding view. Adding to the Start Zone the Indoor Sports facility serves as a major campus icon that links the Lower and Upper Campuses.
