CHILD & YOUTH COUNCIL Civility and the Art of Listening … by Deb Hengel, Administrator – Grant County Child & Youth Council

Child & Youth Council
Just recently I received an announcement at work for a conference sponsored by the MN Council on Family Relations entitled: “Promoting Civility … within families, between families and care providers, in work teams, in community meetings, and public debates.” The flyer promoted the conference to be: “A day to explore a variety of perspectives and practical tools for promoting, practicing and facilitating civil, constructive interactions. Each session will be designed to provide useful perspectives and tools that can be used immediately at this conference, at home, plus the other venues of your lives.” My first thought was “Sign me up … this sounds toooo good!” And then, I started thinking, just why was this topic so alluring to me? Why on this Monday in November, 2013 was I drawn to the topic of promoting civility? Just what does this topic have to do with my daily work? So, I turned to one of my primary sources of common sense, Mr. Fred Rogers, to see how the topic of civility ties in with families and communities. Mr. Rogers didn’t let me down. He has many wise words on this topic that provided food for thought. One of his quotes that struck a chord with me was "The older I get, the more convinced I am that the space between communicating human beings can be hallowed ground." Families are the first places that we learn about communication. The first look between a newborn and their parent is that awesome moment that sets their relationship. Each and every day forward the parent and the child build their relationship with the words and sounds exchanged, with the facial expressions and the tone of the voice used. As I searched for more of Mr. Roger’s wisdom I came across this quote: “We speak with more than our mouths. We listen with more than our ears.” This got me to thinking about the way our body language “speaks” to others. We know as adults that when we are speaking to someone, we pick up the other person’s response to us by what we see. For example, when we see the other person with their arms crossed in front of their chest, we may pick up the sense that they are not necessarily open to what we are saying. On the
other hand, when we see a person lean into what we are saying, we get the sense that they are listening and open to what is being said. The same types of things are true with our children. As a child develops, they become increasingly aware of their parent’s body language when asking questions or seeking information. For example, when an adult gets down to eye level with the child, the child gets the sense that the adult is truly listening to them. On the other hand, if an adult always remains at their full height in communicating with their child, their child may not feel as connected. When our children grow taller than us, the same dynamics may happen. It is just as important at this stage to make sure we are communicating “eye to eye.” A third quote that provided some thought was “In times of stress, the best thing we can do for our children (and for each other) is to listen with our ears and our hearts and to be assured that our questions are just as important as our answers.” In today’s world there are many uncertainties that can cause us stress. Adults are faced with challenges with their families, their jobs, their businesses, their farms, their relationships, etc. Stress ups our stress hormones and puts us in a “fight or flight’ mode. This mode often lessens our ability to listen and respond with our hearts. Which brings me to the answer I was seeking on why the “Promoting Civility…” conference caught my eye. It was about the idea of civility and the importance of courteous, respectful, and compassionate communication between children and their parents. It was also about the types of communication children observe between the adults in their lives, and what they see and hear when about in their communities. Learning more about how to promote civility might be a good idea. For more information on the efforts of the partners in the Grant County Child & Youth Council: cycmail@wca.k12.mn.us or 218685-4587. Immunizations: Are Your Kids Ready? The following immunizations are required for school beginning Sept 1, 2014: Kindergarteners are required to have: 5 doses of DTaP- unless the 4th dose was given after age four 4 doses of Polio – the fourth dose must be given after age four 3 doses of Hepatitis B 2 doses of Varicella (or signed physician documentation of chicken pox disease) 2 doses of MMR In addition to the required vaccines, these vaccines are recommended for this age group: annual Influenza and two doses of Hepatitis A Seventh graders are required to have: Tdap (Tetanus booster with the whooping cough component) Meningococcal (meningitis) Most 7th graders will already have these vaccines, but if they don’t they will need: Hepatitis B – 3 doses Polio – at least three doses MMR – 2 doses Varicella – 2 doses In addition to the required vaccines these vaccines are recommended for this age group: annual influenza and 3 doses of Human papillomavirus (HPV) On April 3, 2014 to get ready for seventh grade, sixth graders will have the opportunity to participate in a mass dispensing clinic. They will be given the required Tdap and meningococcal vaccines free. This exercise is a joint effort between our school, Stevens Traverse Grant Public Health and the Minnesota Department of Health. More information about this opportunity will be shared with families in January and February. In order for your child to attend school, a record of these vaccinations needs to be on file at the school. If you choose not to vaccinate your child according to the above recommendations, the school will need notarized documentation that you conscientiously object to having your child vaccinated. Vaccinating on time means healthier children, families and communities. For more information about vaccines, check out www.cdc.gov/vaccines/. For information about the new requirements and free or low cost vaccines for children, please call Marcia Schroeder at 320208-6670 at Stevens Traverse Grant Public Health.

Joan Koep, a certified Zumba instructor, is excited to offer this Latin-inspired, dance-fitness class. Zumba incorporates Latin and international music and dance movements, creating a dynamic, exciting, exhilarating, and effective fitness system. Zumba combines fast and slow rhythms that tone and sculpt the body using an aerobic/fitness approach to achieve a unique blended balance of cardio and muscle-toning benefits. Zumba is for everyone! Zumba creates a healthy, fun and partylike atmosphere that provides a non-intimidating opportunity for non-dancers, new exercisers, or those who have previously hesitated to participate in group classes. At the same time, dancers and veteran exercisers thoroughly enjoy the change of pace. Zumba is the most effective, innovative, and exhilarating workout designed for everyone. The primary elements that make it so unique and successful are: * It’s a blast!—Zumba is exercise in disguise. Participants have a blast and don’t even realize they’re exercising.

Yoga Flow (vinyasa yoga) is a flowing style of yoga that synchronizes breath with movement through a series of postures. The smooth, continuous flow deepens breathing, promotes endurance, flexibility, strength and balance while calming the mind. Yoga is an effective way to decrease the stress of modern life. With a focus on breathing and centering your thoughts, yoga embodies the concept of connecting the mind and body.
Whether you’re new to yoga or a regular yogi, this level 1 foundational class is taught in a flowing sequence with mixed level options so all students can individualize their practice needs as they transition in and out of poses. This series is carefully themed to deepen the students’ experience of yoga over the course of 6 one hour classes. Detailed instruction will be presented in an easy to follow, accessible manner with plenty of time for modifications to individualize the practice for each students’ skill level. Experience yoga and its benefits first hand, you’ll be glad you did.
