Early Childhood Screening is a requirement for all Pre-K/SR Classes (Ages 3-5) Early Childhood Screening needs to be completed within 90 days of program entry. The screening will be done by Horizon Public Health. Early Childhood Screening only needs to be completed once, and if it has already been done by Public Health or a family physician, please make sure to forward the screening results to our program. If you need your child screened, appointments can be made by calling Public Health at 320-208-6688.

Early Childhood Screening Parents of 3 to 4 year old children
Early Childhood Screening is a quick and simple check of how children are developing between the ages of 3 to 4 years. It identifies, at an early stage, possible learning or health concerns so that children can get the help they need before starting school. Early Childhood Screening is not an IQ test or a kindergarten entrance exam, although Morris Area Pre-Kindergarten classes require that screening be done within 90 days of program entry and it is required by state law for children before they can begin in kindergarten. Early Childhood Screening only needs to be completed once. Screening is a free review of your child’s vision, hearing, height, weight, overall development, and immunization records. For the Morris Area schools, children are screened at Horizon Public Health by a nurse. Watch for an information packet in the mail shortly after your child turns threeand-a-half years of age. If you do not receive a packet, call the Public Health office at 320-208-6672 to set up the day and time for your child’s screening. The School Census You matter to us!
The school census is a list of students from birth to school age. It is used to inform parents about opportunities that their child needs to be ready to enter school when they turn five years of age. Notifications for events and programs such as early childhood screening, pre-kindergarten opportunities, special events, family nights, kindergarten registration, etc. will be mailed to families based on the census data. If you have just had a new baby, recently moved into the school district, have recently changed your address, or want to make sure your children are on the birth to 5 census, please contact Diane Strobel by calling 585-2237 or e-mail her at dstrobel@morris.k12.mn.us with updates to ensure you receive the necessary information!

Engaging children in the wonders that exist all around them is especially important in their early years. Children’s hands-on experiences in nature contribute to early brain development at a very crucial time in their growth . Observe, listen, and feel. Pre-K children are natural explorers. Nurture that curiosity during this nature-themed class designed to encourage exploration and discovery in the great outdoors.
When children are young, it's easy to remind them to say, "please & thank you"; yet, it’s important to challenge them to go beyond to develop a thankful heart. It also helps to model and teach appreciation for gratefulness to be instilled. In this class, there will be projects, books, and experiences that encourage students to think about others; count their blessings; and exercise manners to help them embrace an attitude of gratitude

Scholarship Opportunities
A jointly sponsored program of School District 2769 and the City of Morris
Pre-registration is a must for all classes and trips offered by Morris Area Community Education. Register early, as we reserve the right to cancel any courses without minimum enrollments one week prior to the class start date. We consider you registered when your registration form and fee have been received by our office. You will not receive a call confirming your registration. We will only call if a class is cancelled.
Refund Policy
A full refund will be made if enrollment is not sufficient to run the class. If a class does not meet your expectations, you may request a refund up to two days after the first class meeting. NO REFUNDS will be made after that time.
It is our policy that no one shall be denied the opportunity to participate in a Community Education class because of inability to pay. Contact the Community Education Director to inquire about scholarships. No more than one waiver or class scholarship shall be granted per person per session. Thank you to the Stevens County Family Services Collaborative and the Morris Area Public Schools Foundation for making these scholarships possible.
Facility Use
We encourage groups and organizations to utilize school district facilities. Usage of rooms, gyms, auditoriums, etc. in the school buildings is reserved through Community Education. A completed building use permit is required. Nominal rental fees are charged depending on your group. Service fees such as custodial and food services may also be charged depending on your specific permit requests. The primary goals of the Morris Area Community Education In-House Basketball program are team orientation, an equal opportunity for boys and girls, and affordable fees. The MACE philosophy is to strive to create a positive, fun environment for boys and girls to develop basketball skills, promote teamwork, and instill in them the principles of sportsmanship, honesty, loyalty, courage, and respect. A fun and rewarding experience for each child is of the utmost importance to us. MACE provides an in-house program with practices on Saturdays and Mondays. The inhouse program runs mid-November through February, while traveling teams typically conclude in March. Traveling teams compete against teams from other communities on multiple weekends. The first in-house practice/event of the year will be Saturday, November 23. Be looking for registration forms in mid-September.

Your big friend will spend about 2 hours a week with your child; however, it is important to note that this is a mentor program, not a babysitting program. Figure Skating + Basic Skills Kelly White Ages 4+
These classes will emphasize the basic skills of skating for levels 1—8 along with Free Skate 1—4. Classes are open to all levels, beginner through experienced. Students will be placed according to skating ability. Participants must furnish their own skates that fit properly, be sharp, and have good laces—no double runners. Hockey players are welcome to register as well. Let’s get skating!

Dakota/Lakota Languages and Cultures Class
Tabitha Morris and Claudia Iron Hawk Grades K—12
Join us for this new enrichment course series that introduces participants to two of the Midwest region’s Indigenous languages, cultural traditions, and cultures of today. We will learn through a combination of high-quality contemporary Dakota and Lakota literature and stories, games, art, music, hands-on activities, and fun outings! A healthy afternoon will be provided each day of class. All students from Kindergarten through Grade 12 are welcome, and sibling groups are encouraged to enroll together! Scholarships are available upon request to families who qualify.
Kelly started figure skating when she was 3 years old, and competitive skating when she was 10. Kelly has been coaching with the Alexandria Figure Skating Club for 16+ years, and currently coaches competitive skaters, while being a member of the USFSA and the PSA. With extensive training in basic skills, freeskate, moves in the field, dance, pairs, figure skating, hockey, and power skating, she is excited to share her passion with the Morris community!

Magicians in the Making David Wing, Instructor Grades 3—6
Abracadabra, alakazam! They say a magician never reveals their secrets, but this is your chance to uncover some tips and tricks of the trade. The first day will cover magic basics of card handling. The second day will explore card magic. On day three, students will practice prop magic including cups and balls and a sponge ball vanishing trick. The fourth day will conclude with basic street magic. Magic difficulty will vary depending on the age and student abilities.

All 3—6 graders interested in playing volleyball, learning the skills, teamwork, and playing games—this is a perfect opportunity to work with the high school Morris Tiger volleyball coaches and players. Participants will be divided into two groups; a 3-4 group and a 5-6 group.

The AARP Smart Driver Course is one of many programs offered by AARP Driver Safety. It's the nation's largest classroom and online driver safety course and it's designed especially for drivers age 50 and older. Morris Area Elementary A Message from the Elementary Principal
The Morris Area School District is excited to welcome you back for the 2019-2020 school year. The faculty and staff are once again busy preparing the school and classrooms for an inspiring time of learning and growth. As I begin my 25th year in education, I am excited as I have ever been to begin the school year. While we take the work we do here at MAES very seriously, I would like to take a moment and share how proud I am of our staff for their relentless pursuit of student achievement and success. Student success is the goal of all staff members at Morris Area Schools. We are committed to seeing every child reach their full potential and assure you we will do everything in our means to make that happen. We ask for your support and participation in this effort by sending your child to school every day, encouraging him/her to read on a regular basis, and to carefully monitor homework and progress. Research clearly shows the most significant factor influencing student success is FAMILY. Working together gives us the greatest chance for a meaningful year! Each fall, staff and students at Morris Area Elementary embrace a new theme. We were looking. The theme for the 2019—2020 school year is “We are all leaders at MAES!” We will work on the seven habits of successful people with staff which we will be teaching to OUR students. Invest in Our Youth
MAES will continue the “Invest in our Youth” campaign for 20192020. This SINGLE* fundraising event replaces the time consuming practice of collecting fees or participating in other fundraisers as a way to pay for events/items such as a trip to the zoo, skiing, assignment books, the overnight class trip, music and PE supplies, or numerous other “extras” which enhance the educational experience for our students. This program – in which 100% of the funds directly benefit students – we ask each family to ‘sell’ one share ($35) for each child enrolled in K-6. While we will be available at open house for you to purchase your investment, families or friends may contribute at any time by sending cash or check directly to the school or going online: · Go to the Morris Area Schools web site: www.morris.k12.mn.us · Click on the “Donate to Morris Area Schools” link · Enter the “Donation Info” · Under “Apply donation to:” choose Universal · Complete information as needed (address, payment option, etc.) · Type “Additional Information/Comments” · Click on, Submit

Title I
Title I is a federally funded program through the Elementary & Secondary Act (ESEA) designed to provide support to students who are performing below grade level in reading and/or math. The goal is to emphasize high academic standards in an effort to help students succeed in the classroom and reach grade level performance. How are parents/guardians involved? Parents are invited to attend the school’s annual Family Fun Night held in May. Parents, staff and students may participate in the development and carrying out of a family involvement plan that spells out the goals and shared responsibilities of the child, school and parents for student success. Parents are encouraged to participate in Title I meetings and learning opportunities.
Parent's Right to Know
At the beginning of each school year, school districts must notify parents of children attending Title I schools that they can request information regarding their children's teachers. In addition, if students are taught by a teacher who is not highly qualified the parents of students in Title I schools must be notified, in a timely manner, if their child has been assigned to, or has been taught for four or more consecutive weeks by, a teacher who is not highly qualified. Please know that ALL Morris Area Elementary teachers are highly qualified. We are excited that you are taking the time to support your child’s learning through Title I services.
Assessments
In addition to statewide assessments, students will take the FASTBridge reading fluency test and the Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) three times a year, during fall, winter, and spring. Information gained from these tests will help us to analyze program effectiveness, predict proficiency on the Minnesota Comprehensive Assessments, differentiate instruction to reach all learners, and allocate resources where they are needed.
Reading Corps Continues
Students in grades K-3 will continue to benefit from the Minnesota Reading Corps program during the 2019— 2020 school year. This is the eleventh year of the program and it has been a tremendous boost for students. Reading Corps is a statewide initiative to have every child be a successful reader by the end of third grade.

From the Desk of Troy Ferguson A Message from the Superintendent
It’s hard to believe, but our days are already getting shorter and soon the warm Summer days will turn to Fall. Fall is such an exciting time as it signals the beginning of what I’m sure will be another great school year at Morris Area Schools. As the new Superintendent for our district, I am very anxious for the school year to begin. In my short time here, I have been very impressed with this community and the support you demonstrate for this district on a consistent basis. On a personal note, my wife and I would like to thank so many of you who have welcomed us to Morris. A major reason I pursued this position was the reputation Morris has as a friendly, supportive, tight-knit community and my experience has already shown the reputation is accurate and well deserved. In addition to the fine reputation the Morris Community has earned, it is equally impressive the school board and community stakeholders had the foresight and commitment to state: The vision of Morris Area Public Schools is to become the finest school district in West Central Minnesota, while developing the district’s strategic plan. That decision to “go bold” and commit to providing a first class education and opportunities for our students made my decision to apply for the Morris Area Schools Superintendent position a very easy one and I am thankful for the opportunity to serve and work with the fine students, staff, and community members in our district. As you are all no doubt aware, the construction project in our High School is nearing completion and the pace has been frantic this summer. Rumors can gain traction and I’d like to dispel one I’ve heard recently that claims our 6-12 students will not begin school as scheduled. I’m here to report that is not true. All Summer, the School Board Finance and Facilities Committee and I have been told we will occupy the High School in time for school to start on September 3 as scheduled. That message has never waned. There may be a few items left to complete, but we have been assured they will not delay the start of school.
Please don’t hesitate to come up and introduce yourself when you see me at school or out and about town. As my predecessor Mr. Lahn told me, “the Morris Area is a special place”. I am honored to be here and I am beyond excited for school to begin. My best to you and yours,

The system can also be used to notify you of a school closing due to inclement weather. It’s an equally effective way to keep you informed of everyday activities, such as event times and locations as well as schedule changes. The system is Internet based and allows each family to maintain a secure, password protected online profile. You can log into your profile at any time to update your contact information. To do this, go to the school website www.morris.k12.mn.us and click on Parent Portal. Log in using your JMC Parent Portal username and ID. Add any email or cell phone number and click on the boxes under Important Messaging Information. Maintaining the accuracy of your profile will increase the ability of the school to keep you informed. The system is ready for you at any time. We encourage all of you to take advantage of this opportunity, as we will be utilizing this system for most of our school-to-home communication. If you do not have access to a computer, please feel free to come to the school to use our facilities.
2019—2020 Bus Information
We do a “Bus Safety Program” the first week of school that all students participate in. In the classroom and on the bus we discuss the rules for waiting at the bus stops, riding the bus, and the dangers surrounding the bus. There are also bus safety reminders included with the bus route information. Bus route information will be listed on the JMC website the last week in August. Rural routes are listed under the parent’s name, by bus number, and by driver’s name. The times of pickup may have to be adjusted the first week of school. You will be notified of changes. Students on rural routes are picked up at the end of his/her driveway. Please notify the bus garage if your child won’t be riding the morning route. City stops are listed by street names and the students are picked up in groups. Pick the stop nearest to your home. Please bring your child to the bus stop before school starts so they are familiar with the stop location and how to get home from there. All students should be at their designated stop five minutes before their designated times so the bus is not late for the rest of the stops on the route. The time that is listed on the route is the time the bus will leave the designated stop.
ATTENTION MOTORISTS: Never drive by a school bus with red flashing lights and an extended stop arm whether meeting or following a school bus. The flashing yellow lights tell you the bus is preparing to stop. When the red lights are flashing and the stop arm is extended you must stop 20 feet from the bus in any direction. These signals show that children are getting on or off the school bus. Motorists must not move their vehicle until the driver shuts off the red lights and the stop arm. These laws exist to protect children getting on and off the bus and to protect you from a tragedy. Unfortunately every school year we have multiple school bus stop arm violations in Morris. Violation of these laws can result in a citation and fines. Minnesota has increased the fine to $500.00 for violating the stop arm law. School bus drivers must report passing vehicles to the police department. Thank you for helping keep our children safe. 2019—2020 School Lunch Information
The cafeteria is a place where students can meet before and after school to visit and relax. We like to call this the commons area. Our lunch line has two main menu lines, a Fun & Fit line, and the ala carte line. Students will have the option of choosing to have the menued lines or the ala carte line and pay with lunch account funds. Parents will have to fill out the Student Charging Form to allow students to charge more than a breakfast or lunch. The sack lunch program is also available. Parents of students may order sack lunches for their children. Our breakfast programs starts serving at 7:45 a.m. daily and at 9:45 a.m. on two hour late days. We also offer a Second Chance Breakfast for students in grades 7—12 at 10:08 a.m. We will continue to use the finger scanner instead of pin numbers for student identification for meals. If parents or students choose to, they can also type in their lunch number. Parents will still be able to check their family accounts the same as last year by going to the school website. BREAKFAST

This program is offered during milk break time when snacks will be delivered to the classrooms.
Meal funds unused at the end of the school year will be credited to the next school year. If a family moves from the district or the last child in the family graduates, refunds for the credited amount will be given. Parents can pay for meals online from our website or at any office using their debit or credit card. There is no charge to parents for using rSchoolToday. Applications for free and reduced lunches are mailed to each home at the beginning of the school year. If you don’t receive one you may pick one up at the District Office or Elementary Principal’s Office. If your family did not qualify for free or reduced lunches at the beginning of the year, but your financial status changes part way through the year, you may reapply at any time. Please help support our school lunch and breakfast program by applying for free and reduced meals. Even if you don’t think you will qualify, just applying can help the budget and your application is totally confidential. Thank you for your support. We are looking forward to another good year.
