Welcome to Morris, Minnesota! Whether you are planning a short visit, an extended stay, or considering relocating to our prairie community, this guide will give you a feel for the personality of Morris and will provide you with a sample of the many things we have to offer. A small prairie city in the Minnesota River Valley, Morris is a community where wind and biomass energy systems provide heat and power to public institutions; where events such as Horticultural Night and the Leonard Wulf Limousine Cattle Auction draw international audiences of thousands annually; where homegrown industries carve out niches in international markets; where world renowned artist John Stuart Ingle created the new face of Betty Crocker; and where a federal boarding school for Native Americans emerged into one of the top public liberal arts colleges in the nation. In short, Morris is a place where dynamic things occur amidst the peace of prairie life. It is a community where we value the adventure and possibilities of the 21st Century without neglecting the basic needs of our people or losing touch with our frontier roots. A vital city with small town convenience, Morris offers well-paying jobs in diverse industries, and sustains exceptional educational, cultural, and recreational resources. You can enjoy plenty of interesting shopping and diverse dining in establishments throughout the city. Cultural life in Morris rivals that of much larger cities. The University of Minnesota, Morris Performing Arts Series and annual Jazz Festival bring nationally acclaimed musicians, dance companies, and theater groups to Morris each year. Community theater productions, a main street art gallery, and our annual community talent show display the creativity of our local population. All four seasons offer rich opportunities for fun and relaxation. You can enjoy everything from cross-country skiing and snowmobiling in the winter, to golfing at our 18-hole course, getting fit on our walking / biking trails, or taking peaceful canoe floats down the Pomme de Terre River in the warmer seasons. Morris is 1,500 miles from either coast, yet we have an international flavor. People from all nations come here through our University, government facilities, and industries. We enjoy a growing Hispanic population, some of whom have added flavor to the community palate by starting authentic ethnic grocery and dining businesses. We have five acres of unique public Horticultural Gardens, located at the West Central Research and Outreach Center, and an award winning “Children’s Garden” – the first themed children’s garden in Minnesota dedicated to providing horticulture and agriculture education opportunities to children of all ages. We have a federal research laboratory, excellent educational opportunities from early childhood through University, and our city is clean, well-maintained, and constantly improving. Morris abounds with comfortable neighborhoods and tree-lined streets; restored historic homes are shaded by majestic elms; and new neighborhoods offer modern residential designs. Our many parks are well-groomed, our transit system efficient, and our housing affordable. Expanding on traditions of frontier-spirited innovation, agriculture, and education, Morris is now a regional center for teaching, research, industry, and a leader in renewable energy. Yet, what makes Morris special is beyond all that – it is the strong heritage of innovation, perseverance, and integrity in our people that makes our community successful and carries us into the 21st Century. Morris is a repository and incubator of American values that give us the resourcefulness and strength necessary to adapt to an ever-changing world and, like the homesteaders before us, allow us to break new ground, plant new seeds, and nurture the harvest to full maturity Come and visit us anytime. Not only will you discover that there is more in Morris, but you may even decide to stay.

Welcome to the City of Morris, Minnesota A Legacy of Innovation A Little History Morris, Minnesota began as little more than a resting stop on the “Wadsworth Trail,” the supply route between St. Cloud, Minnesota and Fort Wadsworth – a military outpost on the northeastern edge of South Dakota. By the 1870s, the railroad moved through and the village of Morris, with its design and economy shaped by the demands of that industry, was officially born. Over time, homesteaders settled and broke the rich prairie sod. Soon, this small railroad town and county seat grew into a regional center with retail and service industries fed by the farm economy. From these humble beginnings, Morris became a center for governmental and public agencies. A boarding school was established and run by the Catholic Sisters of Mercy for the Native Americans in the late 1880s. The U.S. government took it over in 1897, and in 1909 gave the property to the State of Minnesota. In 1910, the West Central School of Agriculture opened on that property, allowing farm youth to get a high school education and still be available for farm work in the spring and fall. In 1959 it became a four-year liberal arts college: the University of Minnesota, Morris (UMM), which is now recognized as one of the best public liberal arts colleges in the United States. Today, numerous federal government agencies reside in Morris including the U.S. Department of Agriculture, North Central Soil Conservation Research Laboratory, Farm Service Agency, Natural Resource Conservation Service, and the US Department of Interior Fish and Wildlife Service. There is a Minnesota State Department of Transportation District office in Morris, Stevens County Highway Department, and modern public school and medical facilities.

Agriculture and Green Innovation Morris area agriculture has been advanced by the research conducted through federal and state agricultural research facilities that are internationally known for their expertise on soils, crops and animal husbandry. The federal USDA Soils Lab and the state West Central Research and Outreach Center both offer public tours showcasing their research of new methods in agriculturally related fields. In addition there are several private crop breeding research sites in the immediate area, and other agricultural-related businesses. Local dairy, beef, and swine operators are among the largest in the nation. Morris is a state leader in developing green energy using byproducts from agriculture and other natural resources. UMM is one of the first public colleges to generate on-site renewable power from local resources, such as corn stover; a biomass gasification plant fueled by crop residues from nearby farms generates steam to heat campus buildings; solar thermal panels collect the sun’s energy to heat swimming pool water at the local fitness center, and two wind turbines tower over the city providing 70 percent of the electrical needs for the campus. From its earliest days as a frontier village, Morris distinguished itself through people of vision and foresight, adaptability and ingenuity, endurance, hard work, and integrity. These qualities defined and refined this prairie community for over 130 years, enabling us to take what resources we possess, whether small or great, and turn them into much more.

Additionally, many high school students take advantage of the Post-Secondary Enrollment options and earn as many as 25 college credits before even leaving high school. Both public schools have new or nearly new facilities that greatly augment the overall educational experience. Working in conjunction with the University of Minnesota, Morris campus, the Morris Area School District helped to fund and build the new Big Cat Stadium, for both the university and high school students to use for sporting events.

University of Minnesota, Morris The University of Minnesota, Morris (UMM) is a unique higher education institution. Welcome to the City of Morris, Minnesota Wetlands Abundant Hunting and Fishing Morris is well-known as a quality location for goose, duck, and pheasant hunting. Part of the famous prairie pothole region, there are many marshes and shallow lakes in the area that serve as breeding and migration habitat for waterfowl. Grassy fields, cattail sloughs, and field edges provide habitat for some of the best pheasant hunting available. Each autumn, at area motels, restaurants, and sporting goods stores, camouflage or orange- clad hunters take advantage of local hospitality as they use the Morris area as a hunting destination. Over 10,000 acres of federal land called waterfowl production areas and another 5,000 acres of state-owned wildlife management areas in Stevens County provide both wildlife habitat and a place where hunters are welcome. Besides pheasants and waterfowl, hunters in the Morris area can pursue deer, turkey, grey partridge, doves, rabbits, and other species. Fishermen come to Morris too in pursuit of walleyes, northern pike, large-mouthed bass, and panfish.

Birding and Wildlife There is more to enjoy about wildlife than just hunting and fishing. Bird watchers can enjoy a great array of prairie birds: from clamoring flocks of tundra swans and other waterfowl to bobbing shorebirds probing the mud of area wetlands to diminutive prairie sparrows singing their breeding songs. In early spring, birders willing to awaken before the sun can hear the ancient and mystical call of prairie chickens booming on their leks. The marshes contain secretive rails and bitterns and the sky above is a place to look for prairie hawks. This is the land of the wetland and grassland specialist birds, a place where eastern birds transition to western birds, a place where birders can find great birds in a great community.

Natural Beauty As lovely as any bird, the gorgeous prairie flowers can still be found on a few precious remnants of the once abundant tallgrass prairie near Morris. Morris is a place where you can take your time with a field guide in hand and see beauty no book can describe. Yellow sunflowers, purple blazing stars, and orange lilies. Flowers on the prairie come and go through the rhythm of the season; prairie violets and delicate, soft blue pasque flowers bloom in early spring and then give way to prairie smoke and coreopsis. The prairie clovers and purple coneflowers of summer transition to the robust sunflowers and multi-hued asters in the fall. Whether you like to hunt, fish, hike, watch wildlife, identify unusual prairie flowers, or take a hike on a rural country road, Morris is a great outdoor recreation destination.
