J​ ulie Sousa since childhood has demonstrated her interests in music . In adolescence, she has started attending rock and heavy metal ambients, which encouraged her will of learning to play drumms. Years later, she started having drumms class with two teachers, curiouslyboth with equal names: Luiz Carlos Nascimento ( of the metal core band Wermuth) and Luis Carlos Silva (of the death metal band Devoration). Â
In 2008, realizing the lack of female doom metal bands in Brazil and ​ besides being an admirer of this metal style, Julie forms together with herfriend Tainå Domingues the band Mortarium, her main project. As years goes by, Julie has gradually stood out in the brazilian music scenery and earned her place as a heavy metal drummer.
Mortarium
The Brazilian Doom/ death metal band Mortarium is the only female bandin the style in their country. It has started in 2008 by Tainá Domingues and Julie Sousa in Rio de Janeiro, but their first live performances happened in 2010, simultaneously with the release of the first single Celebrate Eternity .
In 2012, Mortarium releases the single "The awakening of the spirit", marking, then the passage of their ex-members, having received positive feedback from the public and specialized media, nationally and internationally. Mortarium consolidates its line-up in a trio formed by Vivi Alves [vocal and bass], Julie Sousa [drums] e TainĂĄ Domingues [guitar and guttural vocals].
The group keeps performing mainly in Rio and SĂŁo Paulo in music events like Eclipse Doom metal festival, the biggest Doom metal festival in Brazil, which at its last edition promoted the release of "Doomed Serenades" - the first national Doom Metal selection, featuring 10 of the best brazilian doom metal bands, among which Mortarium with the single "The awakening of the spirit".
With the new single "My distress", the band recently released their first official video, using themes that deal with human Psique and mental disorders, theme that is also reflected in their lyrics.

Hi Hat Girls Magazine
H i Hat Girls is an online magazine about female drummers. Pioneer in Brazil and free online, the Hi Hat has day by day been consolidated as a mark in the Brazilian music press. The publication has been mentioned including in the most renowned media specialized in the subject. The start was in 2012, when Julie Sousa organized and created the magazine in order to promote the improvement for drummer girls, besides promoting the works of brazilian drummer women. In each edition, the magazine reaches out more girls and encourage them to the studying of the instrument By Hi Hat Girls has passed names like Nicki Wicked (EUA), Jully Lee, Lucy Peart, Biba Meira and also recently, Andrea Alvarez e Vera Figueiredo. Besides interviews, the magazine also cover events with the participation of drummer women, like the Girls on Drums (in Curitiba) and the Batuka Brasil (in São Paulo).
Influences
Her main influences in drums and idols are Igor Cavalera, Vera Figueiredo, Sheila E. and Nicko McBrain.
Note* In June, 2013, Julie Sousa's talent was shown in the American magazine about drummer women TomTom ( www.tomtommag.com ), special edition featuring metal drummers, as one of the three most prominent brazilian female heavy metal drummers.
