Kasper’s siblings are too young to bike themselves, so Laura who is three sits in a seat on her mother’s bike and 6-year old Jakob on a trailer bike attached to his father’s. The children’s older cousins, Sofie and Amalie, travel along with them. “We have chosen to stay at hotels, because there is not room on the bikes for a tent and luggage as long as the youngest sit on the back of the bike”, says Birgitte Tandrup. Normally the family lives near Milan in Italy, but they spend a

Now the children are old choice was a three-day holiday by bike on Samsø. “It had to be an island, because the ferry trip frames the holiday so well. It was a bit difficult finding hotels at such short notice, but we found rooms at Strandlyst in Ballen the first night and at Nordby Kro the following night. In that way we get to see both ends of the island without the day trips becoming too long,” Lars Tandrup says. “The distances do not seem long on Samsø. I was worried how the little ones would manage the 21-kilometres ride, but it was no problem at all. We went swimming, had lunch, and had time to visit the Labyrinth. Samsø is a really nice island,” Birgitte says happily. There are o lot of things to see and experience, and we could easily have spent much more time on the island."
Facts: Samsø is an obvious choice for a bicycle holiday. You can bring your own bike or rent. Rented bikes can be delivered at the ferry or at your accommodation. You can rent bikes at: www.samsocykeludlejning.dk www.samsøcykler.dk

After a summer picking strawberries in 1990, he moved with his family to Samsø and after a year, he began his trips to the market with fruit and vegetables in his old Opel Kadet. Over the years, Niels has built a network of local suppliers that supply him with the different vegetables and fruits he sells in the market. “My interest is that the best quality vegetables are produced on Samsø. A TASTE OF SAMSØ
At Trolleborg in Permelille we have put Samsø in jars for almost 50 years and thus made sure that the good Danish preserved food finds its way to private and professional kitchens. Samsø Konservesfabrik is the last Danish owned factory producing preserved products. All our gherkins, beetroots, red cabbage and pumpkins are grown on Samsø. Imported supplies make pickled cucumber salad and pickled cucumbers from the mainland. We have a wide selection of both organic and conventional products as well as products without added sugar. Through the season, which begins in April and ends in February, our 40-60 employees make certain that the Danish kitchens get products of best tasting quality. Trolleborg develops new products too. Ketchup, soups, marmalades, mustards and pesto mainly based on local produce. You will also find the world’s smallest tomato factory on Samsø where we produce ketchup and pesto made by Danish tomatoes. The products from Samsø are in all leading food shops in Denmark, but are to some extend “disguised” in the brands of the supermarket chains. Ask in the shop if the products are from Samsø and bring home the good taste – after the holiday too.

From farm to fork Samsø Bryghus (brewery) stands for ecology and own produce Every day at seven o’clock Stinne and Kim start working in their 2-acre organic vegetable garden. They choose the vegetables of the day for the stall and the café. Behind the windbreak, 12 little piglets are loafing about, not knowing that they eventually will become meatballs, sausages and sandwich meat. They are just looking forward to the brewing season, because they will be fed with the mash from the brewing. “This is without any exaggeration, from farm to fork,” says brewer Kim Vestergaard humorously. “You cannot buy scallops or other upclass meals. On the menu is only what we grow ourselves,” says Stinne. The customers loves the

Our family-friendly campsite is located in the middle of the island near the protected area around Stauns Fjord, with horses, birds and seals. The site is only a stone’s throw from the island’s child-friendly beaches along the Sælvigbugt. We have divided the site into many nice sections, accommodating the needs of visitors staying in tent or caravan.
The campsite is located in wonderful, natural surroundings between large trees and hills leading down to the water. We are located next to the island’s nicest holiday town, Ballen, where there are shops, great restaurants and fresh fish for the barbecue. Denmark’s f riendliest festival
Good music, wonderful atmosphere and the size attracts many people “I do not hope that the Samsø Festival gets any bigger – the present size is perfect. It is easy to talk to everyone which is great for an old fool like me”, laughs Keld Foght, who participates for the fourth time this year. 17-year old Nadia from Helsingør on the contrary is there for the first time and she is wildly enthusiastic. “There are some cool bands and a smashing atmosphere. We are very much “on the same level” despite the age differences. The smal size of the festival makes it nicer than Roskilde where you sometimes cannot find the right stage,” Nadia reflects. A traditional museum is limited by four walls and filled with artefacts from times long passed. The Welcome Centre in the centre of Tranebjerg is a good place to start your visit on Samsø. Here you can learn about the island’s cultural history.
Økomuseum Samsø Welcome Centre and Museum Farm: Open 1 May – 31 October 10am – 4pm
The movie “Samsø – an island is created” gives you an 8 minute overview of the development of Samsø through 16,000 years, and in the History Universe children can actively engage in history. In the Museum Farm you can find our traditional local museum, showcasing the home of a wealthy sailor-farmer islander. After the visit it is time to explore the island and experience the history in the landscape.

Gunpowder and cannons for children
What you hear may leave some sort of impression, what you see you remember, but what you stick your f ingers into you understand. ”The History Universe at Økomuseum Samsø is for children in the most inquisitive age from 8 years and up,” says Lis Nymark, director of the museum “But we also have fun and challenges for the younger siblings.” ”Come with me,” says Jette Toft Jepsen, one of the enthusiastic volunteers at the museum. ”Come with me to The Story Cave and start an expedition.”
History with all your senses In the dark Story Cave we are taken into the world of fantasy through thrilling stories based on historical events, -places or –artefacts, which have left their mark on Samsø
After that it is time to be active, to put your hands into history. The world, which the story opened, are explored through experiments, constructions and model making. The mysterious has to be demystified and the incomprehensible must be comprehended. Can we build a model of the mill in Brundby so that all the small parts fit together and the wings are turning so that the millstones can mill? Can we find out what is inside the old burial mounds? Can we, like the Vikings, build a canal through sand, so that it will not collapse? Finally we try things in full scale in The Activity Yard. How did the people of the Stone Age move the boulders weighing tonnes? How did they hit a sailing ship with cannon during the wars against England? What was it like to hunt a big whale from a log boat?
The History Universe has the answers. After a well done experiment, we make an amulet: a pilgrim cross or a Thor’s hammer made of tin or perhaps an ornament made by bone or amber. “We have nine stories, nine different experiments in model size and nine exiting activities in the yard,” Jette says and adds: “During the school holidays we have two different experiments every day.”
Look at history When you have experimented with history, it is exiting to get around the island to see and understand the historic traces left in the landscape. In order to better find your way you can buy a small pathfinder leaflet at the Welcome Centre (Velkomstcentret).

Samsø out of season It is easy to fall in love with Samsø, when the sun is shining and you can see Jutland, Funen and Zealand in the horizon Summer on Samsø equals to sand between your toes, tanned arms, ice cream, crab fishing, horse riding, live music, bicycles and much more. Many people choose summer because there are many activities for all ages, but Samsø is much more than that. Each season has its own charm and if you choose Samsø out of season, it is important that you provide yourself with information about opening hours, accommodation, where to eat etc.

evenings are getting shorter and the air cooler. On the northern tip, on a windy day, you can feel the forces of nature and see how the sea rises. Autumn is also time to relax in front of the fireplace after a long hike, and you might be lucky to find mushrooms on your way. The character of the island this time of year is the many pumpkins that you see everywhere lying on the fields, as large orange basketballs. Apple - and pear trees are bursting with fruits, it is time to stock for the winter. Invite the children on an autumn trip to Samsø and
Snow on Samsø If you are lucky to experience a white winter, a trip on a sledge in Nordby Bakker is an experience beyond the ordinary. The snow lies untouched on the beautiful hills. The character of Samsø this time of year is cosiness, togetherness and during December, there are several christmas markets around the island. Invite your family to the Museum, where you can experience a historical Christmas market and buy Christmas decorations from the good old days.
