HELLO AND WELCOME TO THIS, THE 400th ISSUE OF BSH – THE LONGEST RUNNING CUSTOM BIKE MAGAZINE IN BOTH BRITAIN AND EUROPE!

F

or this milestone issue we’re going back to our roots, and we’ve put together a magazine crammed full, and I mean full, of choppers – proper choppers, with nary a hint of rear suspension between them. We couldn’t really do anything else, could we, given that the chopper is the purest and oldest form of custom bike? The machines you’ll see in this issue are the cream of the breed too; from genuine ‘70s choppers built back in the days of flares, crocheted tank tops and Watneys Red Barrel to brand new builds from this country and beyond, we’ve scoured the custom world for the very best. We’ve choppers from England, we've choppers from Ireland, we’ve choppers from Scotland, we’ve choppers from Malta, we’ve choppers from America, and we’ve choppers from Sweden… well, we could hardly have a proper chopper issue without bikes from Sweden, could we, the spiritual home of the chopper? Yeah, yeah, I know that America is the birthplace of the breed, I’m not disputing that, but Sweden is the place most of us associate with proper long-fork choppers these days, isn’t it?

I’ll always remember the first time I rode a trike (and so, I suspect, will the owner); it was at the Kent Show in 1987 and I was about… umm… 20. Someone I vaguely knew had a VeeDub trike, with the engine at the back, and after he’d slightly drunkenly promised one night in the local biker boozer to let me have a go on it one day, I pestered him for a good couple of hours to let me do it here at Kent where there was lots of room and, as long as I kept away from the tents and wasn’t a twat (you can see the flaw in the plan straight away, can’t you?), I was unlikely to hit anything. “Yeah, go on then,” he said. Then he paused, looked thoughtful and said: “Actually, we’re a bit low on beer, pop down to the beer tent and get a few cases. Just one thing – when you pull away, do it in second, don’t use first…”

So off I duly popped, not fast as I was going through people and tents, but the long way round of course. I got to the beer tent with a grin that’d make the Cheshire Cat look like it was trout-pouting, and I could see people As well as that, we have, as you’ll’ve noticed by the weight of the checking out the trike and the bloke riding it because, if mag as you picked it up, more pages in this special issue than we you remember, trikes weren't especially common in those normally have. Yep, we’ve boosted the number of pages up from days. I swaggered in, bought five cases of beer, staggered our normal 116 to 132, and we’ve bunged in a 32-page Harleyback to the VeeDub with them, slung ‘em nonchalantly on Davidson supplement too, full of some of the most amazing the back seat, hopped aboard, fired it up and, completely custom Harleys around, as well as the latest Harley-Davidson forgetting the owner’s sage warning, stuck it in first, gunned news and products, and your best Harley-related pictures too. the motor and dumped the clutch. Yep, you guessed it; the trike reared up vertically like a startled horse and the pointy Anyway, now that I’ve whetted your appetite, I’ll shut the fu… exhausts at the back dug into the soft Kent earth and stuck sorry, hell up and let you get on and read it, shall I? Yeah, there. Me, and the beer, were rudely ejected backwards thought that was what you’d say… before my slightly ale-addled wits could do anything about it, ✱✱✱✱✱✱✱✱ and the next thing I know I’m lying on my back on the ground surrounded by a number of scattered beer cans, some of Just one thing before I do though – for the first time in I don’t which had punctured and were spraying lager everywhere, know how many years (10? 11?) there are no vehicles with while the whole, quite sizeable, beer tent, not to put too fine a three wheels in my garage (okay, so garage is a slightly posh point on it, pissed themselves with laughter. word for a huge tin shed with no power just down the road from where I live, but…), and do you know what – it’s a bit of It took the help of a few nearby folk, once they’d stopped an odd feeling. laughing, to get the near-vertically stuck trike back horizontal again, and I rode back to where all the local bikers from round Y’see, over the years I’ve become quite fond of trikes. our way were camping, thinking to myself: “I’ve wiped the dirt I’ve had four of my own, six if you include the Can-Am off the exhaust, I’ll get away with this.” As I pulled up, everyone Spyder I had for a few months before it got crashed (not was grinning at me, and the owner looked at me and shook by me I hasten to add) or the truly marvellous monsterhis head in disgust. “I told you not to put it in first, didn’t I, you wheeled V-Max that Steve from Taylormade Wheels twat?” he said. lent me a few years ago, and I’ve lost count of how many I’ve ridden over the years, having spent quite a “Wot?” I said. “I didn’t…” long time as the editor of a trike magazine. I get that “Don’t talk shite, you knob, we could see the front wheel, and they’re not everyone’s cup of Lapsang Souchong (he hear the laughing, from here.” says blithely trying to sound sophistmicated), and I can appreciate that if you live in the middle of a Anyway, I’ve sold both my trikes, the GPZ900 that was on the large town or city (or within a 50-mile radius of That cover of the mag a few issues ago and a GSX1100 that I’d picked London), they’re a major pain in the gluteus maximus, up as part of a deal towards the end of last year, and they’ve but if you live, like me, out in the sticks where people gone off to live elsewhere in the land – the Kwak to a lady in still point at helicopters* and more than four vehicles Northallerton, and the Suzuki to a gentleman from Stoke. Serena at a junction is a traffic jam (especially if three of and Tony, I hope you have as much fun on them as I did! them are tractors), then they’re about as much fun as See you next month! you can possibly have on something with more than two road-touching ‘oops.

ART MO OTORCYCLES Just a reminder in case you m missed the original info – the NABD (National Association of Bikers with a Disability) are raffling off the absolutely gorgeous Herald 250 that we built last year as a BSH project bike to raise money to get and keep disabled bikers back on the road, and tickets are just £1! You can get them from any NABD stand at rallies or you can buy them over the phone by ringing the NABD on 0844 415 4849 where you can order books of five tickets. It’s definitely worth entering too because whether you win or not (which you won’t if you don’t enter!), you’ll be helping disabled folk to get back on the road – giving them their lives back – and that’s a worthy cause in anyone’s book. Good luck!

The rather wonderful Purdy Triumph that graced our cover last issue wasn’t actually painted by the builders, Purdy Historic Motorcycles, as was said, but rather by Andy Feige at ART Motorcycles (also known as Motorcycle Paint Shop) in Ashford in Kent. Andy did all the prep and paint, as he has with a very large number of bikes

judging by his website, and has actually painted a total of eight Purds (six in black, one in blue, and one in orange). If you’d like him to work his magic over your beloved (bike, we’re talking, not other ’alf), then ring him on 07796 477642 or contact him through the website at www. motorcyclepaintshop.co.uk

The Assembly Chopper Show will be held on the weekend of 21-23rd July at House of Vans London, and will see 50 of the best vintage choppers from around the globe being showcased. A host of legendary chopper builders are also set to descend on the venue to celebrate the art of the chopper, including long-term Vans veteran Max Schaaf, as well as Jeremiah Armenta of Love Cycles and Go Takamine of Brat Style to name a few. In addition to the impressive selection of choppers and builders down at House of Vans over the weekend, a few specially selected retailers will also set up shop under the arches, such as The Great Frog, Bonzorro vintage goods, Burns women’s denim apparel, LeBeef Kustom Metal Works and Joe King helmets, with a number of retailers yet to be announced. Attendees can also expect prize giveaways, live music and free drinks courtesy of Pabst Blue Ribbon. Keeping in line with the show, the House of Vans 100-seat cinema will be g an assortment of motorbike-related films over the period for your screening g pleasure, including Easy Rider, The Wild One and Choppertown. viewing Get more info from the event’s Facebook page or www.houseofvanslondon.com

Tickets cost £10 per day or £20 for the weekend (£30 with camping), and you can get more info from www. busterlang.co.uk

ACE CAFE ORLANDO

The new Ace Cafe Orlando was formerly a boiler plant, built next to the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad, and then in the 1990s, it was home to a famous rock ‘n’ roll venue called The Edge, where virtually every rock band from the era (The Ramones, Pearl Jam, Green Day, Lenny Kravitz, The Reverend Horton Heat and others), graced its stages. Located just off Interstate 4 and close to all the area’s attractions, there will be car and bike meets throughout the week, as well as weekend music festivals. There’s a Rockers Speed Shop with exclusive merchandise, Harry’s Bar (a prohibition era-inspired bar featuring craft cocktails), a Motor Gallery featuring original motorsports and rock ‘n’ roll artwork, photography, sculptures and unusual bikes, a Dainese shop, a BMW dealership, an Eaglerider bike rental facility, a backyard beer garden, Oklahoma Joe’s BBQ pit, and the Blue Cap Shack, a mixed-use facility for live rock ‘n’ roll amid a sprawling indoor/outdoor bar. The address is 100 W. Livingston Street, Orlando, Florida 32801, or you can check it out online at www.acecafeusa.com

Motorcycle Social is an exhibition celebrating and showcasing the best of the evergrowing new wave custom motorcycle scene. Spanning across the brutalist industrial interior of Canal Mills, Leeds, the exhibition will feature beautifully built machines, Triumph and Harley-Davidson customs, music, art and photography all under one roof. There will be a wide range of build styles including bobbers, choppers, cafe racers, trackers, classics and everything in between, with a mix of debuting builders showing for the first time as well as established names bringing never-before-seen machines. There’s a market place, an outdoor food court, a fully licensed bar, live music, and much, much more. The event also has disabled access, and is family and dog friendly. For more info go to the event website at www. motorcyclesocial.co.uk or check them out on Facebook.

The Yorkshire Pudding Rally is in its fifth year at Escrick Estate in, yes, you guessed it, Yorkshire, but it’s been going for 14 years and it still sells out on prebook ticket sales every year. So it’s first come first served for anyone who wishes to attend Yorkshire MAG’s last rally of the season over the first weekend in August. The Yorkshire Pudding offers a friendly chilled atmosphere with great weather. It has two marquees for entertainment, one hosting a big stage with bands playing both nights and a comedy show during the day on Saturday. The other smaller marquee is a more chilled real ale marquee with a small stage with artists playing both evenings. There’s a great selection of traders selling bike-related stuff, food vans offering pizza, fish ‘n’ chips, burgers, and curry etc., the best toilet facilities, litter pickers to keep the site clean, and much, much more too. Full weekend tickets cost £25 (prebook only) or you can get a Saturdayonly ticket for £18. Get yours and/ or more info from www. mapevents. co.uk

Wild & Sons, All Over It Racing, and Emmerald Barwise are helping the Wipe Your Tears charity by raffling off this Ducati 899 (with new and funkier paint since this pic was taken), selling tickets at numerous shows before the draw in October. It’s all in aid of a little lad named Lewis who is just two years old and has a variety of unpleasant conditions that mean he requires a specialist medical bed to assist with his safety. Wild & Sons have also donated two custom bicycles, and are helping raise money by selling photos of folk in their Wild & Sons Pontiac Trans Am which they’re taking to shows including The Gravity Show (16th July), the Buster Lang Show (5-6th August), and Tattoo Jam (11-13th August). You can get tickets from any of the above companies’ stands at any of the above events or you can get more info from www.wipeyourtears.org.uk or www. wildandsons.com AUGUST 2017
