T
his is actually the 399th issue of this ’ere magazine since it started way back in 1983; a number that itself means very little to anyone, but it does mean that next issue, number 400, is something special, something very special indeed!
so riding in the rain should be less of a chore, but I find I now don’t want to do it unless I really have to… weird.
Anyway, the Ratrod! Yeah, And ’cos it’s a special first real ride issue, we’ve decided out was a brief to push the boat out squirt up to the and do summat to local town to fill celebrate the fact that the tanks up, only it is the 400th edition, about five miles so the magazine that you will be grasping in each way, but what your sweaty paw on or after 6th July will be a a laugh! Once you’ve got your head around huge, 164-page issue full of more bikes, more the fact that yer arse is just 11 inches from events, more photos, more words – more of what the blacktop and that, because you’re sat you want to see, basically. so low, pulling away is never going to be It’s also going to be a full-on chopper special with an elegant experience (like an arthritic duck nary a hint of gurlie rear suspension anywhere, so frantically paddling until you can get your don’t miss it! BSH 400, on sale 6th July (or earlier feet up on the ’boards is probably the best if you’re a subscriber)! way to describe the palaver), then it rides, well, just like any long bike really. It’s stable, ✱✱✱✱✱✱✱✱ slow steering (180 turns on mini roundabouts And speaking of choppers, now that the winter might be interesting… thankfully we don’t seems to have finally relinquished its icy(ish) grip have many of those round ‘ere), and rock solid. on us, I’ve put the BSH Project Ratrod on the road. Bumps don’t seem to upset it much, although I know, I know, I’m nesh, I should’ve had it out as anyone who rides a rigid will tell you, you do earlier in the year, but as I’ve got older I’ve come tend to be hypervigilant for potholes, manhole to the conclusion that riding motorcycles without covers and anything else that threatens to make effective mudguards in the rain when you don’t your spine attempt to break free of your body actually need to isn’t as much fun as it used to be. like a directionally challenged Chestburster (yes, I have recently been to see Covenant, why do It’s funny, isn’t it, how your mindset changes? you ask?), and actually the flat seat means that Years ago I rarely wore waterproofs, often it’s way more comfortable than a conventional riding in jeans with holes in the knees and hardtail – it feels more like a sprung bike than a Converse baseball boots, and used to laugh rigid. Thanks to Simon Harris at Attitude Customs at the spray of water that rose up, almost for extolling the virtues of flat-seat rigids to me hypnotically, through the beam of the years ago, he wasn’t wrong! headlight, and at the puddles of muddy water that inevitably collected around me In fact the only thing that does take a little whenever I stopped. These days, even the getting used to is the fact that you are so low; Kevlar combats I habitually wear (just got the top of your head is at about the same level a new pair of Draggin’s to replace the old as the bottom edge of a car side window, and faithful Bull-Its that have, after many years’ all the way back out of Brandon to Pam’s burger excellent service, got a little past their van, where local bikers meet on Thursday and best) have an element of waterproofing Friday evenings, I was convinced that I was being built in, and for real weather I have an old followed a little closely by a large truck ’cos every pair of Richa Gore-Tex that are practically time I looked back over me shoulder all I could see monsoon-proof, but I do now try not to go was a large bumper and a radiator grille. It pulled out when the weather’s less than clement. in behind me at the layby, and turned out to be my Doesn’t make much sense really, does it? mate Al… in his Transit. Better gear, less chance of getting wet, See you next issue!

MOTORC CYCLE SOCIAL Want a top-class custom Harley, but can’t build one yourself? Attitude Cycles down in Southampton have now set up a finance deal, a proper modern, up-to-date finance deal, so that you can buy their bikes, and these are the first two they’re offering. The first is a bare metal Sportster bobber with a fully rebuilt motor, five-speed ’box, one-off hardtail frame, bare metal tank and rear ’guard lacquered with ‘Harley’ pin-striping, new ’bars/oil tank/pipes etc., etc. It comes with a full 12-month MoT, and a six-month parts and labour warranty, and there’s a choice of zero deposit finance or other finance deals. The other bike is a ‘burple’ bobber, again built around a fully rebuilt Sportster engine and a one-off frame, and has, like its bare metal sibling, new everything right through. This one is painted in a deep and rather stunning ‘burple’ (mottled black/purple with ‘Harley-Davidson’ subtle lettering), and also has a range of finance deals available including zero deposit. For more info contact Attitude Cycles on 07500 945985 or go to www. attitude cycles. uk
Motorcycle Social at the end of July is an exhibition celebrating and showcasing the best of the ever-growing new wave custom motorcycle scene. There’ll be a wide range of build styles including bobbers, choppers, cafe racers, trackers, classics and everything in between, with a mix of debuting builders showing for the first time as well as established names bringing never-before-seen machines.
If you want to wind down and relax for a while you can browse the cool tees, lids and leathers in the market place, or head to the dedicated outdoor food court comprising wood-fired pizza, deep south barbecue and smoked meats, vegan and vegetarian catering plus a fully licensed bar. To accompany the craft ales there is live music throughout the night. Motorcycle Social will have disabled access, and is family and dog friendly, and you can get more info from 07816140101 or www. motorcyclesocial.co.uk

IDLE TORQUE
Replays are a four-piece rock/pop/ indie cover band performing covers from the past six decades including artists such as Foo Fighters, David Bowie, The Beatles, Radiohead, Tom Petty, Mott The Hoople, The Who, The Cult, Bryan Adams, The Police, Oasis, Feeder, The Kinks, Queen, The Stereophonics and Snow Patrol among others, and they’re looking for gigs on the bike scene. Check them out on Facebook (Replays Covers).
Idle Torque is a small independent shop which sells premium, stylish motorcycle clothing in South Leicestershire. It stocks brands such as Bell, Davida, Hedon, Roland Sands Design, Rokker, Knox and Resurgence, and is run by a biker. Jack Gutteridge passed his test last year and wanted to buy some cool biker clothing, but there wasn’t anywhere in the East Midlands that catered for his style so he decided to gamble everything and open his own shop. He instantly fell in love with the custom bike scene and bought a 1976 XS500 cafe racer as his first bike. He’s tried to distance himself from conventional bike clothing shops, and designed, built and installed all the shop fittings and even did the landscaping outside himself too. The concept of the shop is to provide a social hub for riders of custom bikes to meet and buy stylish gear, and it’s situated in an old stable yard next to a great cafe, organic butchers and traditional blacksmiths, making it a great destination for a ride out. Idle Torque is at the Stable Yard, Cotesbach Estate, Cotesbach, Leics (LE17 4HX), and you can ring on 01455 207980 or go to www.idletorque.com
The 31st Farmyard Party is just a couple of short weeks away, so we thought we’d better give you a last-minute update, hadn’t we? This year’s Farmyard will be, the organisers have promised, even bigger and better, with more music and entertainment than ever before. Bands already booked include the Sex Pissed Dolls, Bad Dog, The Force, ACDC UK, and Groove Ninjas, and there will be more than 30 quality acts performing throughout the weekend on four different stages. There’s the usual Smacked Arse Comedy Show with a host of new and established comedians, a surprise performance by the legendary Purple Helmets display team, two huge camping fields (one you’re allowed to have campfires in), a Glamping Village (prebook only), four bars, excellent food, showers, clean and properly maintained toilets, and much, much more too. As well as all that there’s the usual BSH-sponsored custom show that, again, incorporates a round of the BSH Custom Bike Building Championship (see the ad elsewhere for details). Entering your bike is easy – simply turn up and put it in the custom show! Tickets for this year’s Farmyard cost just £50 on the gate or £25 if you want to come for just Saturday only, and there are limited car passes available too, but they do need to be prebooked (ring 0800 988 3199). Get more info from the Farmyard Party’s website at www. mapevents. co.uk
BIKE STOP CAFE JOAnovARC are an all-female power rock quartet who’ve been playing together for 12 years. Formed by sisters Sam and Shelley Walker, together with Deborah Wildish in 2004, they toured as a trio until guitarist Laura Ozholl joined them in 2009. Some reviewers have likened them to Girlschool and Suzi Quatro, but they’re no tribute band. After releasing a couple of self-penned singles to great acclaim in the rock media in 2015, the ladies recorded an album of their own brand of power rock called ‘Ride Of Your Life’ last November and there is not one duff track on it. They’re regulars on the biker festival scene and this year they will perform at the Ireland Bike Fest and the Bulldog Bash. They’ve played at numerous Harley-Davidson official events and, when they decided to create a promo video for their album launch, Harleys were on their agenda but, in keeping with their stripped-down ‘attitudey’ rock music style, they had to be proper chopped Harleys. Clive at So Low Choppers put the word out and on a cold airfield in Suffolk in November around a dozen chopper riders and the band got together around a 360-degree camera. See the video on Facebook or www.joanovarc.co.uk
The National Motorcycle Museum in Birmingham is offering you a chance to win a highly desirable 1960 BSA 500cc DBD34 Gold Star Clubman! Tickets cost £2 each and will be distributed during June via subscription copies of the specialist press, but can also be obtained via the museum on 01675 444123 or ordered securely online from www.thenmm.co.uk Their last raffle, that we told you about in BSH a few months ago, was to win a brand new Triumph Thruxton R, and it was drawn by World Superbike Champion Troy Bayliss and won by a gentleman from Worksop who, unless you’re named Roger Ward, wasn’t you. Good luck!
Motorcycle clothing and accessories specialist Bike Stop now have a brand new onsite cafe within their showroom in Stevenage, Herts. The new cafe offers extra seating both upstairs and downstairs, plus a menu of paninis, sandwiches, salads, cakes, cookies and Lavazza whole bean coffee.
