Acollectionofsuperbmotorcycleswhichhasgraced oneofthescene’sspiritualhomesissettogounderthe hammerattheStaffordshow.

Themotorcycledepartmentofwhathasnowbeen rebrandedasBonhamsCarsisofferingtheworld-class collectionofAnthonyREastata‘noreserve’saleaspartof itstwo-dayauction,withmorethan80machinesfromthe impressiveEastcollectiononoffer.

RegularvisitorstotheIsleofManwillbefamiliarwith theA.R.E.ClassicMotorcycleCollectionlocatedwithin thegroundsof TheOldVicarageatKirkMichaelonthe TTcourse.

Attimescomprisingmorethan100machines(including thoseonloan),thecollectionwaslovinglyassembled bythelateTonyEast,whomovedtotheIslandwhenhe retiredin2002.

Alarger-than-lifecharacter,Tonywasbornin1940 andbecamefascinatedbymotorcycleswhilestillaboy, collectingabandonedmachinesleftinpeople’ssheds.He wouldgoontoenjoyasuccessfulcareerintheautomotive partssupplybusiness,foundinghisowncompany,A.R.E. Limited.Manyofthemotorcycleshecollectedcameto himviacontactsinthetrade.

It’salwaysacrowdfavouriteattheStaffordshows,andthis October’s‘livestart-uparea’–moreofficiallyknownastheGrand PrixPaddock–willbenoexception.

Asalwaystherewillbeahostofsuperbmachinerybeingrevved toyourheart’scontentthroughouttheweekend,butherewepick outthreebikeswhichshouldbeparticularcrowdfavourites:

LesArcher’s1949Norton

LesArcherJr(as someofourmore seniorvisitors willknowhim) wasatopclass nationaland internationalracer primarilyinthe 1950s,competing inavarietyof championships. Likemanyofhis era,Les(whose fatherLeswas alsoaleadingracerofthe1920s)competedinprettymuchany eventontwowheels;arealtalentbothontarmacandthedirt. Anearlyoff-roadsuccesswasISDTgoldin1950,competingfor themostpartwitha250ccVelocettespecialanda500ccNorton, basedona500T.ThiswasthestartofalongNortonassociation. ArcherwentontowintheEuropean500ccchampionshipin 1956. ComingtothepaddockisoneofArcher’soriginalbikes,aManx Norton490cc‘GardenGate’.Thisbikewasriddenbyhimatthe 1949ManxGPandisstillriddeninangerinBritishHistoricRaces andtheLansdowneseries.

Okay,MelGibsonisn’t comingtoStafford(asfaras weknowfromcheckingthe tickets),nordowehaveJim Goose(thelawmaninmovie classicMadMax).Butwhat wedohaveisafaithfully recreatedexampleofthe JimGooseMainForcePatrol (MFP)motorcyclefromthe 1979cult film.

Goose’smotorcycleisacustomisedKawasakiKZ1000,which isaffectionatelycalledthe‘Kwaka’:apowerfulandruggedbike, reflectingthecharacter’spersonalityandcommitmenttohisduty. ThisKwakarecreationbyPhilC(theUK’sself-proclaimedJim Goose)featuresastrikingpaintjobwithMFPinsigniaandis equippedwithallthegearneededtoenforcethelawinthatpostapocalypticworld.

Notonlywillthisbikebeondisplay,we’resure‘Goose’–orPhil–willbestartingitupinthelivestart-uparea.

Goinggreenwithafeastforyourears

Ifonethinggetsyourmotorrunning,itmightbethisbeastofa bike,theKawasakiZXR400R.

TheStaffordGrandPrixPaddockwillberingingtothesoundof thismachinerevving-upinallitsglory.Notonlyafeastfortheeyes butalsofortheears.

Thebackstoryofthisbikeisprettyspecial,andisoneofreal devotionfromitsowner.Afterlosingeverythinginalorry fire,Tony Griffiths,withthehelpofDerekSmith,builtthebikebackfrom scratchinhislivingroom.

Tonyoriginally turnedupwithjust arollingchassisand anengine,noteven anybodyworkinsight –theycertainlyhad achallengeontheir hands.Assoonasit wasbacktoitsformer glory,thisbeautyhit theNorthGloucester championship competition, finishing insecondplace.

RayRobinsonboughthis1972 HondaCB7500K1in,well, 1972.Hesolditonin1985to help financeahousebuildand then,30yearslater,discovered thatthesamepersontowhom hehadsoldthebikestill ownedit.

Unfortunatelythebikewas nowinbitsandhadbeenina barnformorethan20years. IttookRaymorethanseven yearstoconvincetheowner tosellitbacktohim,butin October2022hecollectedall bitsremainingandbeganthe painstakingrestorationof theHonda.

Manyhundredsofhours laterthebikewascomplete. Allwecansay,Ray,iswow!

He’sownedthebikefor aroundeightyears,restoring thebiketoconcours conditionstepbystep.But aswitheverytruestroker, hewantedtoenjoyriding theRDaswellasbringingit backtofactorystandard.

Theteamisarealfamilyaffair,and thrillsandspillsseemtoruninthe Stannageblood.DadMarkstarted hisstuntcareeratage14in1984, andwentontojoinJamesDylan’s Stuntworld.WhenJamesretired MarkboughtStuntworld International,whilehis sonAaronnowrunsthe StannageStuntTeam.
