Duringthisprocess,themotor,shafting andrudderassemblywasalsolookedat forthebestapproach.Usingtheprovided motorbase,shaftandsterntubeshouldfit inaccordingtotheplan;youstill,however, wanttotryandachieveperfectalignment (see Photo8).Oneaspectthatdidrequire somecarefulconsiderationwastherudder tube.Thisshouldbeattachedtothetransom butthatputsitatananglewiththekeelline, andthereforetherudderbushinsertedinto thekeelextensionisalsoatanangletothe rudderstock.Iwasn’tconvincedthatthekeel extensionwasstrongenoughanyway,being aplypart,soImademyownfromascrapof pine.Thiswasthendrilledataslightangleto taketherudderstockbush.Withtherudder tubeandpropellershaftalltemporarilyfitted, itdidbecomeapparentthattherewasvery littleclearancearoundthepropeller(see Photo9).Everythingwasheldinplacewith tapetoensureaperfectfitbeforefinally beinggluedinsecurely.Becauseofthetube arrangement,therudderneedstobefitted afterthestockisinsertedinthetube,which isalittletricky,asgluingitstraighttothe brassshaftwouldn’tachieveasecureenough bond.Havingpre-drilledtheshaft(see Photo 10), myrudderwasdrilledandpinnedonce fitted.
