We’ve all done it... skiving out of work with some excuse or other, to take advantage of a crisp winter’s day on the bike. For me, an hour out on the Triumph Tiger Sport was all the more valuable, as it was the last chance I’d have to enjoy this brilliant machine. For the three months I had it (colleagues Steve Rose and Bruce Wilson put the majority of miles on), it’s been a great commuter, a fun scratcher, and a perfect pillion bike. I’ll be sorry to see the Triumph go, but the garage isn’t empty. Besides a very ratty old Honda Vision 50 that’s found its way back to our house, I’ve bought myself a 2000 Honda CBR600. Despite being in the very fortunate position of riding some of the world’s best, and most powerful bikes, all I really wanted was a 100bhp sportstourer... I’ll tell you all about it on page 38. The CBR’s in pieces across the garage now, but irrespective of the rotten exhaust and total lack of servicing it’s enjoyed, I still love it. A visit to Maxton engineering this month was a great opportunity to get the low-down on suspension. Richard Adams has an incredible knowledge of road and race technology, and took the time to explain how the forks and shocks on our bikes really work. The company’s bespoke kit is machined and assembled entirely in its Cheshire factory, yet is cheaper than most OE equipment. Fitted to thousands of road bikes around the world, Maxton’s experience can transform the handling of everything from a classic to the latest adventure bike. Maxton’s road-going and race-winning kit is exactly the same – it’s the way it’s set up that makes it perfect for whatever you ride. A good

Contributors Carli Ann Smith’s D’elightful ride MCM’s staff writer Carli might own an R6, but she’s just as happy commuting on the smaller bikes. This month she was making her 80 mile round-trip on Yamaha’s new D’elight 125. Check out her review on page 33. friend of mine – Mark Hardy – raced Suzuki SVs several years ago: “After success racing the Yamaha Past Masters, I found myself way back in the middle of the pack when I started on the SVs. It didn’t matter what I did, I just couldn’t get the bike to work. Then I had Maxton suspension fitted, and immediately I was at the front – the difference was incredible.” With all the new bikes lined up, and a renewed excitement coming from the major manufacturers, 2014 is going to be a brilliant biking year... I’m really looking forward to sharing it with you all. Motor Cycle Monthly is the UK’s biggest bike monthly, and it’s free in dealers, clubs and biker cafes around the country. It doesn’t matter what you ride – it’s all about the fun of two wheels!

The UK’s fastest kids

John Milbank talks to Chris Phipps from MiniGPUK, and discovers an exciting new race series…

10-year-old Charlie Atkins from Goole, Yorkshire.

OVER the past few years, top-level racing has seen a move away from twostroke machines – traditionally the entry point for new racers. The four-stroke Moto 3 style bikes, now being used by the Red Bull Rookies, are today the natural feeder for a career in Moto GP. All over the world there are junior race classes established for Mini Grand Prix on four-stroke machines, with the exception of the UK. The Spanish are running away with all of the top MotoGP rides, so Chris Phipps from MiniGPUK is keen to ensure that the Brits aren’t left behind… “The concept of MiniGPUK was thought up by a few of the dads whose sons currently race in the British Championship on various bikes, with the emphasis being placed on affordable and competitive racing for nine to 15 year olds. Next season will see the kids race over eight weekends at the UK’s premier outdoor karting circuits in Cumbria, Kent, Suffolk, Shropshire, South Wales and Northamptonshire, with the first round in April at Llandow near Cardiff. The weekends consist of a

Remember these faces... aged between nine and 15, there could be a future world champion Moto GP rider here... Friday free-practice (which usually costs around £35 and isn’t compulsory), with free-practice and qualifying taking place on the Saturday to determine the grid positions for the races on Sunday. The cost of the Saturday and Sunday is £90, which includes transponder hire and trophies. “We don’t make any profit out of this series, and wanted it to be as cheap as possible, to get more people involved.

We’ve spent a great deal of time talking to numerous manufacturers about which bike to use, and also liaising with the equivalent championships in Spain, Greece, Italy and Holland. After a lot of research we finally decided to run the bike which has been raced in Spain for the last four years: an IMR fitted with a YX 140cc engine. These four-strokes have a four-speed box, and cost a racer just £1400.

“All too often in this sport we’ve seen the children whose parents have the most money, or are the best at engine tuning, rise to the top. We wanted to eliminate this and create an equal grid where the final finishing position is determined by the best rider during the race. Everyone is on the same bike, running the same engine and tyres. A true one-make and controlled class.

www.motorcyclemonthly.co.uk “We’ll be taking it to the next level in 2014, and trying to create a true World Superbike feel to each weekend, with video interviews of the kids conducted in front of our sponsor board, and a race weekend video uploaded to our website and YouTube for each round. Trophies are awarded after the end of the final race, with podium caps and some big bottles of fizzy water to be sprayed! There’s also a ‘Rider of the Round’ trophy and T-shirt being presented courtesy of MPH Clothing, so its not always the same kids being presented with prizes.” Chris and the team have already started running testing days at tracks, and are looking out for any professional riders who can help coach the kids, or organise visits to factory BSB teams: “Since we decided to set this up, we’ve been overwhelmed by the support we’ve been offered from companies, and also the amount of great feedback we’ve received about the idea. We’ve been offered help from Dunlop, which

is going to supply us the tyres to run; MRCUK has designed us a custommade lightweight race fairing for the bike; A1 Grafix is currently working on the championship livery so that every bike will look the same (albeit in different colour schemes to keep a degree of individuality) and a few other potential sponsors waiting in the wings.” This looks set to be a really exciting series, and is a great opportunity to get kids into the sport with relatively little investment. You can visit the website at www.minigpuk.co.uk to keep up to date with all the latest news. If anyone would like more information about how they can get involved in the sport, or are interested in becoming a series sponsor then please contact chris@minigpuk.co.uk We’ll be heading over to some race meets shortly, so expect to see more of these kids in the paper soon. Until then, check out the video link to see 10year-old Caleb Smith racing at Stretton in Leicester during 2013.

The truth about the 2014 RD250 WEB Forums were recently alive with rumours and images of a new RD350 from Yamaha. MCM reader Andy Ruddock posted an image of one on our Facebook page, asking if we knew anything about it. We didn’t, but we do now... We’re as excited as anyone about the idea of a new twostroke engine, but to be honest, we thought it would be pretty unlikely, and we doubt we’ll ever see one in a mainstream production motorcycle again. The large-scale development and manufacture (excluding off-road) of these oil-burning engines died out with the introduction of the more emission-friendly fourstrokes. After all these years, it would take a huge amount of money, and a seismic shift in mind-set to start developing large capacity, commercially viable and emission-friendly strokers again. Every so often we see a tiny, privately run or funded engineering firm producing one-off two-stroke projects, but they don’t have the commecial pressures of large manufacturers. But don’t take our word for it – here’s the official line from Yamaha: “We can confirm that there is absolutely no chance of a new, large-capacity two-stroke ever seeing the light of day again in a road bike again, let alone a new RD350.” There are a huge amount of mock-ups floating around the internet, mainly from creative individuals with a passion for motorcycles and a talent for image-editing software, but surely this rumour came from somewhere?

It appears that it may have started with some early media coverage, which had been taken out of context... Yamaha Europe’s Shun Miyazawa stated in an interview that, in the development of some of the new bikes coming in 2014, the company would draw inspiration from historical models like the XT500, RD, etc, but this has often been misinterpreted as ‘Yamaha will resurrect old classic bikes and make them suitable for the current market’. Sorry, but Yamaha assures us that it’s simply not the case. Unfortunately, if you’re hoping for a new RD this year, you’re going to be disappointed!

Buyer found for Hein Gericke’s German parent company; but the future of UK operation still remains in doubt

Charlie Atkins during a qualifying session at Llandow track in 2013.

THE administrator appointed to Hein Gericke’s German parent company has announced an investor has been found. Hein Gericke GmbH filed for insolvency on December 16, 2013, resulting in the closure of branches across Europe. George F Kreplin of Kreplin & Partners advised: “A Spanish

company has acquired the operating assets of Hein Gericke GmbH and its foreign subsidiaries – with the exception of the UK.” The future of Hein Gericke’s UK operation remains uncertain. The UK business went into administration in 2012, but was purchased by the parent company

in a move that saw the bulk of the 49 stores close with just 16 remaining. At the time of writing three stores (in Glasgow, Stockwell and Farnborough) were still open. The Hein Gericke UK website is also closed, showing a message saying it is ‘Currently offline for maintenance’.

New course to help young mechanics

Motorcycle Maintenance and Repair Principles has been unveiled as one of the new qualifications available from September 2014 for 16- to 19-year-olds, and is endorsed by Kawasaki. But what does that mean for the bike industry? Carli Ann Smith investigates…

AS PART of the Government’s strategy to bolster the economy, ministers have announced 142 Tech Levels, which will each be supported by leading businesses or trade associations. They will be level three courses – equivalent to A-Levels – for 16- to 19-year-olds, aiming to lead students to a ‘recognised occupation’ and give them a clear career path. This change in the vocational training offered to students follows a report from Professor Alison Wolf which showed ‘at least 350,000 16- to 19-year-olds are doing courses of little value.’ One of the courses on offer is Motorcycle Maintenance and Repair Principles – a course which will be endorsed by Kawasaki. The Japanese manufacturer will be sitting on the ‘working group’ for the NVQ qualification as part of its involvement with the Institute of Motor Industry Awards Committee. But what does that mean in simple terms? Essentially it will be helping to guide the areas that the qualification covers and making suggestions for updates to

keep it inline with what’s going on in the current two-wheeled retail and service world. Minister for Skills and Enterprise, Matthew Hancock, says: “Our radical reforms are part of our long-term plan for the economy, and will mean that for the first time young people will know which qualifications are backed by top employers and lead to better employment opportunities.” Companies supporting the courses in their relevant area of industry include: John Deere, npower, Procter & Gamble, Arsenal FC and Kawasaki. But how can the bike industry maximise this new wealth of talent? Managing director of BikeJobs, recruitment specialist in the motorcycle industry, John McAvoy told MCM: “Anything that promotes and assists in creating career opportunities within the motorcycle trade is clearly a good thing. As a trade, we need to be continually nurturing new talent especially in areas that require specialist skills and qualifications.

Skilled young mechanics like Andy are a vital part of the future of the motorcycle industry. “As ever, the single most important factor in determining whether an excellent scheme, such as this, succeeds or fails is the degree to which the motorcycle industry as a whole gets behind it. Looking ahead, experience is telling us that in the years to come, certain sectors of our industry may very well be facing a real skills shortage, the technical sector being a prime example. To that end, we would love to see everyone from industry trade bodies, manufacturers and dealers supporting this new initiative.” It’s down to the individual colleges to agree with their local employers precisely how they will be involved in delivering the courses. But it’s expected that most Tech Levels will include workbased placements, projects and other activities organised to involve employers, and ensure that students are getting hands-on experience.

A number of motorcycle manufacturers have their own training schemes which are rolled out through dealerships, and are often held at designated training colleges and institutions. These have the aim of honing the skills of their mechanics for the specific models of motorcycle and the dealership/brand’s way of working. These new Tech Levels will provide a solid basis for this further training. It’s fantastic to see motorcycles being on the main syllabus for students. It’s now down to the students to take them up and dealerships and manufacturers to push it forward. Here at MCM, we love to see everyone working together to get more people involved in motorcycling – whether that be getting more people on to two wheels or fixing them!

Classic Off Road and Road Racing Show Set a date to see road-racers Ian Hutchinson and Charlie Williams on-stage in the plush Telford International Centre on February 22-23. ‘Hutchy’ sensationally made history in 2010 when he became the first rider to win all five TT races at the Isle of Man. Later in the season he suffered serious injuries during a race at Silverstone, and his miraculous comeback at the Macau Grand Prix in 2013 followed a three-year absence from competitive racing. Charlie Williams joins Hutchy (pictured below) at the show, where the racer turned TT commentator will have a wealth of tales to tell. Trials and road-racing icon Sammy Miller will be bringing three famous machines from his museum: A 1968 V4 Jawa (only three were built); A Kim Newcombe flat 4 Konig; and his 1980s Scottish Trials-winning 500cc Ariel. You can hear the bikes being run in the halls, along with five other similarly exotic race bikes (including Valentino Rossi’s first world championship-winning bike). America’s first motocross champion Brad Lackey stars on stage alongside 12-times British trials champ, Steve Saunders; British trials sidecar champ, Ron Langston; and top regional scrambler, Pete Edmundson. Moto GP commentator Julian Ryder will be previewing the 2014 season, with predictions for Cal Crutchlow and Bradley Smith. The warm and welcoming venue has more than 300 trade stalls and 300 competition bikes already confirmed, along with an outdoor autojumble. Gates open at 10am each day, with tickets costing just £12.

United States police department has suspended number plate scanning AS THE UK Government scraps the paper tax disc in favour of number plate recognition devices, the US Boston Police Department has suspended the use of such scanners “for the time being”. The scanners themselves were not faulty, but the police department was found guilty of retaining data that should be deleted. The Boston Globe newspaper was accidentally given a complete report of the data findings, revealing police kept information

‘indefinitely’ on vehicles with no criminal activity lodged against them. This raised concerns over privacy issues; the scanners record over four million plates a year. A worrying additional discovery was the police failure to follow up on vehicles that did have criminal activity recorded against them/their owners. The worst example given was a stolen motorcycle that was recorded by the scanners 59 times over five months… but no action was taken!

Tucano Urbano Giacca Trip jacket

TANRD TEIEST D

Tested by: John Milbank ED RRP: £189.99 More info: tucanourbano.co.uk Many commuters want protective clothing that looks fashionable and, frankly, not too ‘bikey’. Tucano Urbano specialises in very cool looking scooter and bike kit to suit the Italian company’s local riders. The Giacca Trip jacket has a very nice cut, but still fits my slightly bulky midriff perfectly – it’s such a good-looking piece of kit that I find myself wearing it more than anything else when I’m off the bike. It looks good then, but what about the important stuff? Described as a touring jacket, it’s very comfortable on-bike, and while it doesn’t have the heavy weight and technical construction of my other textile kit, I’ve found it great for riding in city centres, like during the recent Saietta R test. The supplied down liner is essential in the colder months, but I don’t bother attaching it to the coat as it looks just as good worn on its own. There are plenty of pockets, and while they’re made of the same waterproof, breathable material, don’t expect them to keep all the water out in a downpour (there are a couple of useful internal pockets though). It’s a shame that you’ll need to pay an extra £20 for shoulder and elbow armour, but overall this is a really attractive jacket for commuters. It’s even got its own hood for rainy walks from the bike to the office…

Draggin Twista jeans

Tested by: John Milbank RRP: £199.99 More info: www.dragginjeans.net Far too many times, I’ve ridden my bike with plain denim jeans on, even after I fell off my Honda Dominator on a roundabout (in front of a couple on a TDM) and tore a lump out of my knee. We’ve all done it, but those quick trips to the shops can be just as hazardous as any other ride. Reinforced biking jeans are getting more popular, with Draggin priding itself on its CE EN 13595 Level 1 safety approval. Tested at independent laboratory SATRA, Draggin’s Kevlar lined trousers withstood an abrasion test of 4.4 seconds. That’s not as long as a pair of leather pants, but it’s still a pretty long time to be sliding down the road. Made of stretch denim, they hug your legs well, and keep knee armour in place (sadly, none is supplied, but there are pockets for it). A mesh lining keeps them comfortable in hot weather, and you’ll find knitted Kevlar on the bottom, hips and knees – the prime impact points in an accident. This knitting is claimed to offer better abrasion resistance and reduced heat transfer, though hopefully I won’t have to find out. These are a great alternative to full-leather trousers, especially on shorter city rides. They can make your legs look a little fatter than normal, but that’s only because they look so much like normal jeans that you don’t expect to find the thick layer of Kevlar protection beneath. I still wear my leathers for a lot of my rides, but I’m now much more confident of my safety when I pop out for those short blasts…

Furygan’s new 2014 range

The new collection from the French manufacturer features leather and textile trousers, gloves, bags and other accessories. The subtly branded, plain black Steed leather jacket comes with D30 protection and thermal padding with aluminium inserts on the chest. There’s triple stitching in the areas exposed to tearing in a crash and Furygan’s ‘Skin Protect’ lining is used to reinforce against tearing and add abrasion resistance. It retails for £369.99.

The Hero and Hero Lady Textile jackets have vintage styling with modern motorcycle technology hidden inside: D30 CE approved armour at the shoulders and elbows; waterproof insert; thermal padded lining; mesh panels at the arm pits; connecting zip; adjusters at the waist and arms and two outside pockets and three inside pockets! Both the men’s and ladies versions are £189.99.

Coocase Fusion Basic V28 litre case (product from Steff W)

This topcase from Coocase features a manual lock, has storage provision for one helmet, and comes with a universal baseplate for easy fitment to your bike or scooter. It also features an integrated LED brake light with a ‘quick-disconnect’, meaning there are no wires to fuss with.

RRP: £84.95 Available from: www.feridax.com

2014 MT Helmets with integrated MT Alert technology

Selected models in the 2014 MT helmet range will have the MT Alert fitted as standard. The first of these will be the MT BLADE, which is available now. The MT Alert system allows a rider to send a text message in the event of an accident or emergency – which includes a GPS location – to multiple recipients without taking off their helmet. There are no subscription costs or any expensive applications to download, and the helmet and phone only need to be paired once for the system to work. The MT BLADE will come in two shell sizes with removable and washable lining and feature an integrated drop-down sun visor.

RRP: £89.99 for solid colours and £99.99 for a range of graphics Available from: www.tri-motive.com

Keis X2 heated trousers

The new X2 trousers deliver 39 watts of heat through strategically positioned panels. Manufactured from breathable soft-shell material, they’ve been designed to wear under your existing leather or textile motorcycle clothing. Complete with a fused supply lead for powering directly from your bike’s 12v battery, the current draw is 3.25A. Alternatively, with the use of an adaptor, the trousers can be powered through a cigarette lighter type socket.

TANRD TEIEST D ED

Available from: www.nevis.uk.com

I’ve worked on my own vehicles since I was 17 (I wish I still had that Mk.II Ford Escort), but this is my first time with a Clymer manual. I’ve got to say, I’m impressed! The level of detail is superb, with very clear diagrams and instruction – particularly useful are the exploded drawings which feature regularly, and really help you to see how things come apart (and go back together). I was a little wary at the title of this book – described as for the ‘CBR600F4’, this is of course the US

version of the Honda I own. I needn’t have worried – the UK bikes are fully covered, with all wiring diagrams and other areas clearly labelled for each market. Working on your own bike can be incredibly rewarding, so besides the fact that these manuals can save you a small fortune, the gratification of servicing and maintaining your motorcycle make them worth every penny (and they more than pay for themselves even with a simple oil change).

Tested by: Carli Ann Smith RRP: £20.99 More info: www.tucanourbano.co.uk This multi-purpose hat or neckerchief has a lovely soft fleecy inside, perfect for the colder weather. It features a pull tab at one end which transforms it into a hat – although I prefer to use it as a neckerchief. On the bike, it forms the perfect snuggly seal inbetween your helmet and the top of your jacket, and the pull tab comes in handy as you can make sure it’s nice and tight so no cold chills get in. It doesn’t look out of place off the bike either – I like that about the

Tucano Urbano range –there’s a real fashionable flare with its clothing which makes many of its pieces just as useful off the bike as on.

ICE Patch

In the unfortunate event of an accident, if you’re unable to speak or move – how does the emergency services know who to get in touch with? ICE Patch is an ‘In Case of Emergency’ patch which riders can place on the side of their helmet which can provide the emergency services with everything they need to know. You may be more familiar with seeing Quick Response – aka QR – codes on adverts, but ICE Patch uses them to store your personal information. Provide contact details, any medication you may need along with your name and address, and this is translated into an individual QR code which can be scanned by any free QR app. Once scanned, the app will show the 166 characters you have chosen to be included. This technology allows your information to be gleaned in the dark, in the rain and without an internet signal. Want to know how it works? Have a go by scanning the QR code pictured.

ICE Patch advocates the reduction of accidents through advanced training courses and has committed to donate 10% of the company revenues to road safety and rescue charities and initiatives.

MotoBay London

After getting frustrated about not being able to find a parking space for his Vespa in Soho, Nick Smith decided to make his own app to find one for him. MotoBay covers all 33 London boroughs, and provides users with details of the parking bay location, type, borough and address. Available now from Google Play, it uses Google Maps so no online look-ups are needed. A list of the parking rules for each borough is included too. The app has details of over 1800 bays and 350 council-run car parks and users are able to submit new parking bays too – as well as report incorrect listings.

Oxford Boss Alarm

TRIED

AND TESTED Tested by: Carli Ann Smith RRP: £74.99 Available from: www.oxprod.com Whether you have a garage or not, it’s a good idea to lock up your machine to prevent undesirables getting their grubby hands on it. This Thatcham insuranceapproved lock from Oxford Products is fitted with a 100db alarm to get people’s attention if your bike is being taken without your knowledge. The lock itself can be used as a disc lock or with a chain – I use mine with a chain as seen in the picture – simply loop the chain through the clip, place the red end of the pin to the red side of the lock, twist the key and the alarm is set. The pack includes a free minder cable to ensure that if you’ve fitted it as a disc lock, you don’t forget and ride off. It also comes with a replacement battery for the alarm. I’ve had it for a few months now and accidently set the alarm off a few times but the battery is still okay. It comes with three keys, so I stuck one on my motorcycle key and put the other two in the cupboard safely. But if you’re anything like one of my friends (I won’t name names…) you might be pleased to hear about Oxford’s replacement key service – which is available on this lock. Should you lose one or two of your keys, and can provide one key or a key number Oxford will replace them for you for a small charge. Take a look at the catalogue as the lock can be bought along with a choice of chains too. This version has a 14mm shackle, however, the Big Boss Alarm has a 16mm shackle and is priced at £84.99.

Clothing choice

As an all-year-round biker myself, I would like to know why Steve Baker MP (p4, Jan 14 issue) is dressed all in black, and has an all black bike, when he promotes safe riding. Surely to commute safely, the more high visibility clothing you wear the better. Gerald Gaunt Here at MCM we all wear different kit, depending on the time of year, and the ride we’re on. We forwarded your email to Steve, and here’s his reply: “When I’m commuting, I wear a motorcyclist’s high visibility vest, but my bike also has LED bullets front and rear, and is liberally covered in 3M patches, which look black until a light is shone on to them. I don’t wear it out of town simply because I don’t like it: my choice, my risk. I have never advocated safety above all: my first concern is freedom for motorcyclists.” We couldn’t have said it better ourselves!

★ MCM STAR LETTER OF THE MONTH Yes, there is life after superbikes

Glyn Limmer’s Triumph 21 had all the mod cons!

Going back to a time when ‘retro’ was modern

In your November edition you refer to the ‘new’ 350 Jawa as retro 1970s, I had to smile. A friend of mine had the same model Jawa in 1960! He used the motorcycle to out-accelerate British 650s… the only problem was that the Jawa’s clutch plates would burn out during these competitions. In regard to Pete Crawford’s letter in the November 2013 issue,

he mentions gear indicators on bikes: I had a 1958 Triumph 21 350 with a brass indication below the carburettor between the gearbox and clutch case, what a stupid place to put it! Glyn Limmer

Like most of the readers of this fine publication I had a few years away from bikes as the family thing happened. Prior to wife and kids I was into the sports bikes of the day (1980s) so it was a Ducati 900ss that brought me back. But it isn’t the best for two-up journeys, so an addition was required. Imagine my bewilderment when the other half spotted a Hayabusa in our local Ducati showroom, and remarked that it ‘looked comfy’. We hadn’t even got off the car park for the test ride before I knew it was for me. And that was when the real problem started, what on earth can you get after a Busa? I covered thousands of British miles, mostly two-up and in all weathers, yet the bike never missed a beat and never stopped making me smile. As is sometimes the case, things do come to an end, so the wife packed her bags and I was left alone with my other lover, my Busa. Of course, as I’m so irresistible it was only a matter of time before another lady entered my life. I also bought a new bike, a

nice blue one named Harryblue. We tested all sorts of other bikes but nothing could compare to the Busa. Three years later, after a short journey around North Wales, and almost five hours of speed cameras and double white lines, my wrists were numb and soul destroyed. Harry had to go. I borrowed my brother’s Pan European for a trip to Tewkesbury and was sold. I can bimble in comfort regardless of our crappy road surfaces and shocking drivers, yet still sit behind the sports bike guys with surprising ease (cheeses them off but makes me smile). 500 miles around the lakes and beyond, following Hadrian’s Wall and traversing some of Britain’s finest passes. Life after sports bikes? Plenty of it and mostly pain free! Glyn Williams Having been out of bikes for a short while when our daughter was born, I know what you mean Glyn, and as you so rightly point out – all bikes are brilliant, whether they’re sports, tourer, cruiser, dirt, street… As long as they make you smile, that’s all that matters! Each month, our star letter will receive a six month subscription to their choice of one of our fantastic motorcycle magazines!

“I had the pleasure of living with a tribe...” MCM reader Will Moore reports from his epic charity ride across Africa I’m an ex-soldier riding a 125cc Suzuki Van Van, self-funded, solo and unsupported, from London to Johannesburg – something that’s not been done before on such a tiny bike. No TV crews here. It’s all to raise awareness and donations for our brave and often forgotten wounded servicemen. I simply want to give those who have given the most to our country a future: a ‘life’, support and dignity. I departed The Bikerstore, Surrey, on September 14, 2013 and have wild-camped 80% of the way through France and Spain. By no means taking the direct route – as my 12 wild horses don’t like main roads – I stopped at Alicante for a bike service, and The Royal Regiment of Gibraltar for some much needed Hexi blocks (solid fuel tablets) when my dual-fuel cooker failed. Then I was on through Morocco, some 2400km, before crossing the Sahara Desert and disputed Western region. Temperatures passed 100 degrees, with very high levels of humidity – it’s like riding with your head in the oven, with a hair dryer on! I can only cruise at 50kph, as the low power and heavy luggage are a major strain for both the plucky bike and me. Next I was crossing into the lawless ‘no-man’s land’ between Morocco and Mauritania, which is one big minefield left over from a war in the 1970s. I rode on granite rock as I made my way through the notorious 4km wide minefield. Scary and yet exciting, but I’m in no rush to repeat it. I had to cross Mauritania en route to the capital, Nouakchott. This can be a problem, with Al Quaeda based in the desert region of the north, so I camped at the armed gendarmerie checkpoints. Visas and the language barrier have been my main difficulties: I don’t speak French or Arabic. While heading to the capital, there were major floods in a desert region! At

times, I was riding through over a foot of water, sliding all over the place and watching cars get stuck. All I see are two sides to Africa. Humane people, predominantly friendly, but begging and covered in dirt. At the same time there are long motorcades screaming past, with a dozen brand-new 4x4s carrying a minister and 20-odd aids back to the palace. One of which the billions of British ‘aid’ gets spent on! On to the Gambia, where I had the pleasure of living with a tribe called the Mandinka for 10 days while getting the bike serviced and a slam plate fitted. Never in my life have I met such humanity and generosity. What a privilege. I’m writing this from Bamako, in war-torn Mali. The French army is here, preventing the extremists from imposing Sharia law, but villages have been burnt to the ground and many civilians killed. Unfortunately the road here has wrecked my rear suspension, broken my frame and the resulting bottoming out has worn my rear tyre out. I find this challenge extreme in every way. The temperatures, humidity, lack of food and water. the threat of kidnapping, robbery or worse... and yet I meet incredible people who want nothing from me. They surround me at times, smiling and calling out ‘toubab’, the generic name for ‘white man’. I’ve given up my rented home, sold all my possessions and worked 15 hours a day, seven days a week for 26 weeks as crew on the Extreme Stunt Show: all to fund this challenge in aid of our wounded servicemen. Suzuki

V-Strom 1000 £9999 | 99bhp | 76lb-ft liquid-cooled V-twin

Tested by: Roland Brown Photography: Alessio Barbanti and Markus Jahn SUZUKI has been very quiet on the new model front in the last few years, but the V-Strom 1000, unveiled to great fanfare a year ago, is the bike the Japanese firm is hoping will put it back on track. The name is familiar but this is an all-new machine, the previous model having fallen victim to emissions regulations in 2008. Its styling and 19in front wheel suggest that the V-Strom is a dualpurpose bike, built for dirt as well as Tarmac, but Suzuki makes no claims about off-road ability. It says the VStrom is an adventure styled roadster, intended to fill a gap between middleweights including Suzuki’s own V-Strom 650 and more powerful,

Three colours are available at launch.

versatile and expensive open-class adventure bikes. The beaky, dual-purpose styling is pleasant enough (and echoes old Suzukis such as the DR Big), if slightly misleading given the V-Strom’s lack of off-road intent. An overall air of quality, from features such as the comprehensive digital instrument console and built-in luggage rack, is marred slightly by the odd scruffy detail such as the exposed exhaust valve mechanism and tangle of ABS wiring around the front brake calipers.

Tell me about the engine

Like the previous model, this V-Strom is powered by an eight-valve, liquid-

cooled V-twin with cylinders at 90º. It’s an almost completely new engine with 2mm bigger bore giving a capacity increase from 996 to 1037cc. The cylinder head, con rods and crankshaft are redesigned, with a heavier flywheel for improved low-rev controllability. Peak power is up by just 2bhp, to

99bhp at 8000rpm, but Suzuki claims the real improvement is torque at lower revs. The max torque figure is also barely higher but it’s produced 2400rpm lower, at 4000rpm, and the curve shows a big bulge upwards at that point, where the previous model was relatively weak. The revised injection and exhaust systems also contribute to a claimed 16% improvement in fuel efficiency. Featuring Suzuki’s first ever traction control system, it’s a relatively simple design (no lean-angle detection here) controlled by sensors for wheel speed, plus the positions of throttle, crankshaft and gearbox. A button on the left bar gives a choice of two settings, both

for road-going use, and allows the system to be turned off.

What’s the chassis like?

The updates begin with the aluminium twin-spar frame that, according to Suzuki, is stiffer and 13% lighter than its predecessor, and holds a longer twinsided aluminium swingarm. Wheelbase is 20mm longer at 1555mm due also to a front-end redesign that incorporates larger diameter, 43mm upside-down forks for the first time. New 10-spoke cast wheels are lighter than their predecessors, while the brake system is uprated with Tokico monobloc calipers and ABS. At 228kg the V-Strom is 8kg lighter than the old model. The well-padded

First ride 15

www.motorcyclemonthly.co.uk dual-seat is 10mm taller, at 850mm, but it’s narrow at the front so most riders will have few problems getting their feet down. There’s also a useful rack and a pair of solid grab-handles for the pillion. It’s just a shame the seat can’t be adjusted for height. A higher (by 35mm) or lower (by 30mm) seat is available, as a cost-free option.

Should I buy one?

The V-Strom’s price of £9999 plus onthe-road charge is reasonable if not outstandingly competitive, meaning the Suzuki is a few hundred quid more expensive than rivals, including Kawasaki’s Versys and Triumph’s Tiger Sport. Both those bikes are well

proven, more powerful and arguably better value. But the V-Strom looks set to prove itself a respectably good long-distance roadster, and if you like the idea of an adventure styled streetbike it has plenty to offer. Its lack of even notional off-road ability is disappointing, its engine performance is solid rather than thrilling, and its detailing is mixed. Nobody should take one look at Suzuki’s beaky newcomer and think it’s a cut-priced competitor for the R1200GS or KTM’s 1190 Adventure. But you won’t go far wrong provided you accept the V-Strom 1000 for what it is: a capable and comfortable roadster with a smooth and flexible motor,

Naoki Hirooka

Manager, Suzuki sales and planning dept “The V-Strom was developed for the road because our surveys showed that 99% of owners never go off-road. Maybe in the future we’d consider a bike with more offroad ability but our first focus is on the road. We aren’t aiming at the (BMW R1200) GS, we are focusing in between 1200 and 650cc, not just with horsepower and weight but also pricewise it will be in between them. “Why such a gap since the old V-Strom? We are very sorry that we missed out in this class. Unfortunately in 2009 we had a very bad economic crisis and also the Japanese yen had too high appreciation. That was very tough on us. Suzuki is known as a good product at a good price. We couldn’t raise prices a crazy amount, so we continued development and waited until the right time came. Now the exchange rate has come down to a good level. “We are back on track with this model and there are more to come. Of course the market is booming in Asia or China, those are the big numbers, but actually our profit comes from Europe. This year we showed an increase on the bigger bikes, and overall we are making a profit. The big bikes are still the profit-centre of Suzuki.”

sound handling, a reasonable level of equipment, a pleasantly unthreatening character and a sensible price. It’s likely to appeal particularly to riders trading up from the 650 V-Strom, of which there are many because it’s been one of Suzuki’s most successful bikes in the last decade.

So what’s it like to ride?

Suzuki’s focus groups with V-Strom owners highlighted improved low-rev performance as a key wish, and this bike certainly delivers. It pulls well from 4000rpm, staying smooth to the redline at 9250rpm. On more open roads the bike cruised effortlessly at 80mph, and rumbled smoothly to an indicated 135mph on one short, slightly downhill straight. It probably has enough straight-line performance for most owners. Even so, I couldn’t help feeling it lacked a bit of top-end excitement. When winding the power on to exit slower turns there was a slightly abrupt feel that seemed like transmission snatch, though it wasn’t serious and was undetectable at higher speeds. The six-speed box is new, with a shorter top ratio, and shifted smoothly enough. The clutch incorporates Suzuki’s SCAS clutch assist system, designed to give a slipper clutch type action along with lighter lever pull, and worked fine. The traction control activated when I cracked the throttle deliberately on slippery urban roads, especially on its more intrusive setting, but I wasn’t aware of it in normal use. The V-Strom handled well, after a few turns of the shock’s remote preload adjuster had raised the rear end. This dialled out the slightly soggy feel that the Suzuki had when carrying my 85kg on standard settings, and sharpened the steering to good effect. The relatively soft suspension gave a comfortable ride, even on bumpy

surfaces including cobbled streets. A little extra damping at both ends would doubtless have given an even tauter feel (the KYB forks are multiadjustable, the shock has rebound damping adjustment only) but the V-Strom was enjoyably easy to flick around. It was well braked, too, its fourpiston Tokico monobloc calipers biting the 310mm discs hard, backed up by a usable rear disc and an efficient ABS system. Comfort was pretty good, helped by that broad seat. The screen can cleverly be adjusted for angle through three positions with a simple push. It’s also three-way adjustable for height, but range is just 30mm and adjustment requires an Allen key. I’m very tall, so even the highest setting was too low and generated some turbulence. The V-Strom provides no hand protection, although handguards and heated grips are available as accessories. An electrical socket is provided as standard. The accessory list also includes LED indicators, nylon panniers and topbox, centrestand, crash-bars and fog lamps. Instrumentation is excellent, incorporating a digital display that can be accessed by pressing buttons on the left handlebar. The tank is two litres smaller at 20 litres in capacity, but the engine’s improved efficiency is likely to keep range roughly the same, at 160180 miles.

Gone is the analogue speedo dial.

Honda Fireblade SP

The Fireblade’s injection system is revised to suit, but there’s no sign of ride-by-wire or alternative engine modes, let alone traction control. Maximum power is increased by 2bhp to 178bhp at 12,250rpm. Compared with the previous model there’s a small improvement between 4-6000rpm and above 10,000rpm, and a similarly slight reduction between 7-9000rpm. The SP also gets blueprinted internals. Basically each piston’s maximum weight variation from the target 177g is one gram, rather than the normal three. The main benefit is reduced vibration. This is difficult to notice in isolation but Ron Haslam, whose racing school uses Fireblades, thought the SP felt notably smoother.

£14,999 | 178bhp | 84lb-ft liquid-cooled four cylinder

Tested by: Roland Brown Photography: Zep Gori, Francesc Montero and Ula Serra

What’s the chassis like?

Pretty fancy. Honda’s first ever use of Öhlins suspension is the stand-out feature, and there’s far more to the SP than simply a Fireblade with some bolt-on extras. The Swedish firm’s engineers worked with Honda to develop the chassis, which also incorporates new, stiffer

THE NEW SP model is the most exotic, highest-specification Fireblade that Honda has produced since shaking up the super-sports world with the original CBR900RR back in 1992. Those SP initials – used on a Blade for the first time – traditionally stand for Sport Production, meaning a hottedup, track ready version of the standard bike. And that’s exactly what the Fireblade SP is. For 2014, the standard model is updated with a mildly tuned 999cc engine, subtly revised frame, more aggressive riding position and

double-bubble screen. The SP adds to those changes with blueprinted engine internals, Öhlins suspension, Brembo Monobloc front brake calipers, new triple clamps, sticky Pirellis, single seat and lightened rear subframe. What neither the standard nor even the SP version of the Fireblade does is follow most of its super-sports opposition by incorporating electronic features, apart from the option of ABS brakes. The SP is the trickest, most lavishly equipped and expensive Fireblade yet, but in many respects it’s

still fiercely traditional – an alternative to the ranks of ever more complex sports bikes.

Tell me about the engine

Much of the 16-valve unit dates back six years to the Fireblade’s last complete redesign. For 2014 the standard model gets a modified cylinder head with reshaped and polished inlet and exhaust ports, plus gas-flowed combustion chambers. The intake trumpets are reshaped with slash-cut tops, as developed in World Superbike.

triple clamps and an aluminium twinspar frame that was revised around the swingarm pivot to make it less rigid, for improved feel. This mod was also incorporated into the standard model, as was the revised riding position, which angles the clip-on bars slightly wider and lower, and moves the footrests back by 10mm. Only the SP gets sticky Pirelli SuperCorsa SP tyres plus a single seat. The latter allows the rear subframe to be lightened, saving a kilogram and bringing wet weight to 199kg (or 210kg with ABS). The SP also uses Brembo’s Monobloc calipers in place of the standard model’s radial Tokicos, and Honda’s development didn’t stop there. The CABS linked anti-lock system is updated, now giving less front brake when the rear pedal is used, and none at all when it’s used very gently. Initial activation of the front brake is also smoother.

Should I buy one?

If you’re a Fireblade fan and can afford the considerable price of £14,999, or better still an extra £600 for the C-ABS equipped version, then why not?

FIRST RIDE 17

www.motorcyclemonthly.co.uk The Fireblade SP might lose the Top Trumps battle over maximum horsepower or electronic gizmos, but with Öhlins, Brembo and Pirelli as well as its blueprinted engine (and a classy, HRCinspired paint job) it has plenty of glitz. And if the Fireblade’s World Superbike showing has been disappointing of late, Honda fans can point to Alex Lowes’ BSB title, Suzuka 8 Hours wins by teams starring Johnny Rea and Leon Haslam, and the TT triumphs of John McGuinness and Michael Dunlop.

So what’s it like to ride?

These days the shrinking super-sports market seems to be polarising into two groups, with most manufacturers putting their development effort into hugely powerful bikes with high-tech electronics aimed at helping the rider keep it all under control. But some riders prefer the traditional method of development, aimed at creating high but not excessive horsepower with the emphasis on the way it’s delivered, and a chassis whose main aim is to help the rider use brain and right wrist, not electronics, to go fast. The Fireblade has long been the leader of this group – generally scoring well in comparison tests despite a relatively ‘stone age’ specification – and the SP takes Honda’s approach to a new level. There’s no doubt that the best modern traction control systems work very well, and there’s a strong argument that most riders could lap quicker and in more safety with an electronic safety net. But equally the SP’s controllability and chassis quality mean it’s very fast and rewarding to ride.

Like the previous Fireblade – but a little bit tauter, racier and quicker. You’re never going to notice an extra two horsepower but on its launch at the Losail track in Qatar the Fireblade felt strong through the midrange, fuelling very crisply, and pulling sweetly once into its stride at 6000rpm. There was no noticeable dip, even if it is slightly less torquey than the old model, through the midrange, before coming on stronger between 10,000rpm and the rev limit at 13,000rpm. A couple of riders found the unchanged gearbox slightly notchy but I didn’t have any problems with it, though it’s a shame that a bike of this quality and price doesn’t come with a quick-shifter. Any aerodynamic advantage from the double-bubble screen would have been magnified on the circuit’s long main straight by the raging headwind, which tried to push me off the back of the bike after I’d sat up to brake at just over 160mph and counting. Otherwise I didn’t notice the slightly more aggressive ergonomics, though I did still find the riding position slightly cramped for my long legs. (Adjustable pegs would be nice…) Handling was exceptional, notably from that Öhlins front end, whose solid, confidence-inspiring feel was

remarkable even by the high standards of modern super-sports bikes. The rear TTX36 shock also gave a superbly well controlled ride, after a few clicks of preload and compression damping had been added to the stock track settings. Honda’s work with Öhlins also involved relocating the adjusters for easier access, but you’ll have to pay extra for a ride-height adjuster. Braking power from the specially developed Brembo Monoblocs was fierce, with the C-ABS system doing a good job. Honda’s system gives slightly different feel to a conventional ABS setup, but the bottom line is you can stop hard in safety. It also adds a dab of rear anchor, which can be useful, though there’s a weight penalty of 11kg. If you can ride like Leon Haslam, whose tyresmoking corner exits showed no need for traction control, you’ll doubtless brake slightly harder without ABS. Most normal riders are probably better off with it. The crash rate at dad Ron’s racing school halved after they started using ABS-equipped Blades. Pirelli’s SuperCorsa SPs grip well and are a good track-day choice, though embarrassingly I proved they’re not infallible by crashing on the first lap of my second session, having not realised that the strong wind had cooled the front tyre while the bikes were being refuelled. I should have known better than to set off behind Honda WSB rider Johnny Rea even when he was trying to ride slowly… The afternoon sessions were on supersticky SuperCorsa SC race rubber that gave an even more planted feel. The SP is definitely the ultimate Fireblade. It’s fast, refined and sweet handling; very well equipped in some areas, although less so in others. Whether it’s the ultimate Sport Production machine depends on what you want and expect from a cuttingedge superbike.

Teishiro Goto

Fireblade series large project leader

“Many Fireblade customers ride their bikes on the racetrack, and we built the SP model for them. At the beginning of 2000, Mr Fukunaga (previous Fireblade project leader) and I considered the possibility of expanding the super-sports market. We discussed it several times and finally decided to do it. “Customers are choosing Öhlins, Brembo and Pirelli, the same as racing teams. They know these packages and want to have them too, and we want to provide them. But the Fireblade’s aim is to provide high performance for a wide range of customers, and the standard model will keep this direction. “We considered providing different riding modes. Three years ago Mr Fukunaga had a lot of requests, from journalists and the market. We considered it, and we are still developing it because the Fireblade’s performance level — handling, driveability — has to be near the top. “How we maintain this level is the most difficult point for us. That is why, even with steering dampers or ABS, our system is not the same as the others. This shows Honda’s engineering spirit and pride. We need to ensure that the Fireblade is at the highest level with every single system.”

ABS is the only electronic rider aid.

Bristol Show 2014 Welcome W

elcome to the 34th Carole Nash Bristol Classic MotorCycle show, at the Bath and West showground, Shepton Mallet, here in picturesque Somerset. Though there are, so it seems, shows earlier and earlier every year, to many ‘Bristol’ is and always will be the season’s traditional opener. It’s where many of the motorcycles which have had hours of love, passion and perspiration lavished on them over the winter months break cover, and where scores of classic enthusiasts emerge from their winter hibernation for that matter, too. For plenty of us, the winter months are a time of daydreaming, of restoration, of frustration and of planning. Countless club nights, hours in the shed, many phone calls, swapped emails and plotting, planning, all starts to come together, as we make it to Bristol, where it suddenly, miraculously, seems the days are getting longer, the temperature is growing milder and the riding season is coming. Of course, it might not be quite the case – but it feels like it, and that’s, in many ways, more important. The atmosphere at ‘Bristol’ is always different to the other shows, which is surely in (large) part to its positioning in the calendar. It offers the first opportunity to see many friends and fellow enthusiasts for the first time of the year, to talk face to face, and suddenly it all seems more real and much nearer. We’ll all be out riding soon.

And what possibilities many of the lovely machines packing these show halls offer. From the motorcycles used by Pioneers in the days before the start of the First World War (and that’s a full century ago this year), through the great days of the British industry ranging from the 1920s to the 1960s, to the emergence (and takeover) of the Japanese constructors, there’s always something in these halls to represent each period. And more than likely, there’s a club stand for them here, too, manned by knowledgeable enthusiasts of whatever that particular make or model is, be it an association of 1920s New Imperial, a fellowship for postwar shaft-drive Sunbeam enthusiasts or an historic 1970s Hondas collective, they’ll be there, looking forward to the year ahead, but revelling in this weekend, this opportunity to get together, too. Enjoy the show. James Robinson Editor, The Classic Motorcycle

A message from our sponsor – Carole Nash Welcome once again to the 34th Carole Nash Bristol Classic Motorcycle Show, the event which pretty much kick-starts the 2014 show season for lovers of bikes of a certain age. At this time of year I bet you’re looking forward to a weather-proofed gathering. Well, rest assured the comforts offered by the Bath & West Showground means that you, and of course all those beautiful classic and vintage bikes, are well protected. It goes some way to explaining why the show attracts so many of you – some 20,000 attended last year – and why so many owners are happy to display their prized machines. Talking of protection, don’t forget to drop by the

Carole Nash stand. You’ll find the team on hand ready to offer you a quote, you could take advantage of the enhanced benefits and new rates now included in our specialist classic and vintage policies. The team will be happy to talk you through the great changes we’ve made and furnish you with the odd freebie or three! I hope you enjoy what promises to be a great show. Best wishes, Rebecca Donohue Head of Marketing Carole Nash

Yamaha D’elight £1849 I air-cooled four-stroke 7.1bhp I 5.6lb-ft Tested by: Carli Ann Smith Photography: Joe Dick

YAMAHA has bolstered its already strong range of commuting machines with the addition of a budget scooter: the D’elight. Priced at £1849, it aims to appeal to price-conscious bikers, and commuters looking for a brand name without breaking the bank. But does this emphasis on price mean they’ve lost some of the quality? MCM staff writer Carli found out when she took it for a test ride...

But it doesn’t compromise on looks: the ‘Magnetic Bronze’ that we had on test had a fantastic shimmering paint scheme, which attracted a number of admiring glances riding in town. It’s available in black or white too. The retro-style headlamp and tail-lights, flowing lines and chrome detailing made the D’elight stand out for all the right reasons. I was riding on my old CB750k2, and there were some of those rubber tubes across the road that measure the traffic, attached to a metal box chained to a lamppost. An articulated lorry, coming from the opposite direction, drove over them and I then had the surreal moment of watching the rubber tubes break and fly up into the air. Unfortunately, the giant rubber ‘tentacles’ then snared themselves around my front wheel and even Houdini couldn’t escape from this one – shiny CB down the road, trashed kit and a broken arm. Am I stuffed or can I bring a claim? I have a witness who saw everything.

A

This is pretty random and scary! You may have a claim against the authority who is responsible for the road that authorised the box and ‘tentacles’ to be installed; or the contractor who fitted it; or the manufacture of the rubber tubes. However, as the claimant you are going to have to prove on the balance of probabilities that someone has done something wrong, for example the rubber tubes were defective or not installed properly. If you can’t do that you are going to struggle. Practically, your witness will be very important and I strongly advise you go back to the scene and take photographs of everything – road layout, the metal box (which will usually have a sticker of who owns it/manufactures it on the side of it) and the ends of the rubber tubes. I say this, as I once had a case where the defendant alleged the rubber tubes had been cut and we could prove they hadn’t.

Q

Do I have to stick with my insurer panelappointed solicitor? He is a muppet. Some ‘spoon’ banged into the rear of my bike at a junction. I fell off and got hurt. Simple, you would think. However, the said spoon has alleged I

reversed into him at speed after selecting the wrong gear and my solicitor simply doesn’t get that this is not possible. I am on a bike and it’s not a Goldwing! What is not to get? My boyfriend witnessed the whole debacle and I am now bored of the battle. Can I swap solicitors?

A

In short, the answer is yes. You are the client, it is your case and it is your choice who you instruct. If your solicitor doesn’t understand bikes and what happened then find someone who does. This isn’t rocket science and there are loads of great solicitors out there who should be able to sort this mess out. If liability is denied, court proceedings should be issued to get it in front a judge. Many people believe they have to use the solicitor appointed by their insurer. Often panel solicitors and insurers have a beneficial arrangement with each other, so have a strong interest to sell you the belief you have to use the insurance-appointed solicitor. You don’t – you have a choice. You could use a bike specialist, or you could use your local high street firm. Find the right solicitor for you as you’re going to have to work together.

Suspension: Explained Maxton Engineering is one of the world’s top suspension specialists, and the perfect company to de-mystify the springy stuff. Words and Photography: John Milbank HOW MANY times have you heard the local pub pundit dishing out his ‘expert’ advice: “You want to stiffen that up with a bit more preload” or “my bike chatters as I push it hard into corners, so I run a heavier fork oil”? You know it’s cobblers, and you know how suspension works, but do you really know how to interpret what your bike is doing, and what you can do about it? Do you really know if the suspension on your machine is as good as it can be? I don’t mind admitting that, until I visited Maxton Engineering, I still didn’t really know…

How suspension works

In the 1960s and 70s, most bikes used a simple damper rod in the forks, with a basic piston moving through oil to control the return (rebound) of the front end. As bikes and tyres improved, more precision was needed. Enter cartridge forks. These give separate control of the damping as the fork compresses and rebounds, by moving oil within a chamber (the cartridge). A piston on the end of the sprung fork rod displaces oil through a valve in the base of the cartridge under compression. On its return (rebound), the oil is governed by a valve built into the fork rod’s piston… see the beer-mat sketch for a simplified explanation. During slow-speed damping (gentle movement of the bike’s suspension), a needle restricts the flow of oil through a hole in the centre of these valves, just like a pilot jet in a carburettor. In highspeed damping (over harsher bumps), a sprung stack of shims are pushed out of the way and the oil flows through carefully designed ports in the perimeter of the same valve. The spring and the compression damping both work to support your bike – reduce one, and you can (to a point) balance it with an increase to the

other, but then you have to consider the rebound damping that works against the spring when the suspension returns… it’s a bouncy, oily love-triangle. Your shock absorber is generally connected to the swingarm through a linkage (except on twin-shock bikes like the XJR) – which translates the travel of your rear wheel to the movement of the shock by a certain ratio: sometimes by as much as 3:1. There are also risingrate and linear linkages to consider: A rising-rate (or progressive) linkage moves the shock by a greater ratio as the swingarm rises further. On a smooth track, a progressive linkage helps the rear get firmer as the suspension is loaded, making it easier to get the back wheel to spin up, and drift controllably out of corners. At the Isle of Man TT, for instance, there are large bumps, and fast changes of direction, so linear suspension is best: If the rear shock ‘locks up’, that force has to go somewhere, so the weight is thrown to the front of the bike over bumps. Not good. On road bikes, while a linear set up would generally be the best bet, you’ll tend to find progressive linkages (R1s and R6s being among the exceptions). Relatively cheap shocks are used on most of our machines, so the linkage is helping the shock to support the motorcycle, especially where pillions and luggage have to be taken into consideration.

How it affects your ride

A common issue in a road bike is a lack of support from the forks, making it dive under braking. This is caused either by a too-soft spring, or too little compression damping. Generally, it’s the springs that are too soft. Adding more compression damping works when you’re braking, but unlike a spring it won’t be able to move quickly enough when you’re in a corner, making the front wheel kick off small bumps. It’s often best to use a 10-15% stiffer spring, then fine-tune the compression damping for the perfect ride. Of course, this stiffer spring will be working against the rebound damping, and the bike can run wide as you accelerate out of a corner, because the forks are unloading too quickly. Another way to spot a lack of rebound damping is when going straight-on in a fast roundabout, turning quickly left, right and left again. The bike might

manufacture his own magnesium wheels, then working for Honda Racing Corporation (HRC), Norton and the HRC Grand Prix team, Ron ended up using his knowledge and experience to create suspension for race bikes. Ron’s stepson, Richard Adams, took over research and development in 2004, after already working at the company for nine years. Also taking care of the dayto-day running of the business, this leaves Ron free to concentrate on his passion: the design of suspension systems and shock absorbers. enter okay, but as you come out of the first left it ‘fires’ up, making it harder to push into the right and left again. At the rear, if the bike’s squatting under acceleration, you’ll need more support. Increasing compression damping can fix this, but as it’s slower to react than a spring, it’ll give you a harsher ride. Again, a stiffer spring means you’ll need a bit more rebound damping, but it’s less important than on the front, as too much rebound on the shock makes the bike ratchet down over bumps (known as jacking down). Basically, you need rebound damping on the front to hold the bike in position during fast direction changes, but not too much on the rear, so the bike can keep the tyre in better contact with the road. Contrary to what many believe, adjusting the preload on your bike just affects the ride height. This is measured as ‘static sag’, and is typically 10mm at the rear, and 25mm at the front. It’s what gives the bike a bit of slack before a wheel is lifted off the ground. We’ll show you how to check this in a future issue, but if in doubt, stick with the standard settings. The best way to get a feel for what your bike does is to find a 10-mile ‘circuit’ with a variety of surfaces and bends. Get used to how it reacts and you’ll have a better understanding of what’s going on.

New springs and settings then?

Suspension has improved a lot over the last few years, but more than ever, bikes are being designed to a price (we all want cheap bikes, right?). Manufacturers will often go to a suspension company with a very limited budget, and fit a set-up that reflects what they believe to be suitable for their notion of the world’s average rider, on their average roads. As an example, let’s take my 2000 model Honda CBR600. This has cartridge forks, and is quite soft as standard, being under-damped and under-sprung. It’s a comfortable sportstourer, designed for a variety of riders who might carry luggage and a pillion. If I fitted stronger fork springs, I’d have to increase the rebound damping, but the needle valves in these forks aren’t very effective, acting more as an on/off tap than giving true control. So, heavier oil then? This could help, but only with the low-speed damping: As the shim stacks come into play over sharper bumps and mid-corner, the weight of oil is irrelevant, so with a stiffer spring and thicker oil I’ll just have a bike that bounces about too quickly. It’s the same story on many modern bikes, and even those with high-quality kit as standard are designed only to suit an average rider and road. You might ask why ineffective adjusters are put on some bikes: Adjustability is, of course, a selling

The Maxton RT10 remote reservoir shock is a stunning piece of engineering.

From TT racers to the new Yamaha MT09, Maxton supply riders from around the world. point, but it can also be a problem. It wouldn’t be hard for someone with limited knowledge to fiddle with their compression and rebound, only to make the bike worse. If enough people did this, rumour might spread that the bike’s a bad ride. It could be that it’s better for motorcycle manufacturers to give only a minimum of adjustment, and not allow an owner to take the bike out of a ‘window’ of optimum – but average – settings.

How to fix it

Maxton engineering make suspension to suit you, your bike, and your roads, and machine every part (except the springs) in its Cheshire factory. Over the years, hundreds of TT racers have paired up with Maxton, and the company currently also supports 20 BSB teams. It’s certainly not all about sports bikes or racing – the Triumph Explorer, for instance, is great on perfectly smooth roads, but Maxton has had a huge number of customers looking for help with the hard suspension on UK surfaces. Equally, many riders of tourers, nakeds and classics around the world have benefited from having their suspension modified to perfectly suit them. With most road bikes having progressive shock linkage ratios (for the first 25mm of swingarm travel, the shock might move 12mm, whereas in the last 25mm, it can be as much as 16mm), the ride can get really harsh as the bike is loaded up. Maxton look at the weight of the rider, along with their riding style, to get the ideal setting – allowing the shock to work perfectly on any given bike. Contact Maxton by phone or email and you won’t get a hard sell – what you will receive is a list of options, from springs and oil for your forks, to a

Richard Adams tests a Maxtonmodified fork leg on the dyno. complete rebuild or replacement cartridges. You’re also welcome to visit the factory, where staff are happy to help you look at all the options. On my CBR, because the damping adjustment is so poor, it’d need new valves. Fortunately, the cartridges are rebuildable, so sending Maxton my forks would see them returned, ready to run, with new springs, valves and oil perfectly matched to my weight and riding-style, with full adjustability. The Showa shock on my old Honda can be rebuilt, but parts aren’t available, and Maxton value its reputation too much to bodge a rebuild. If I wanted to improve the rear I’d opt for its RT10 unit. Prices vary depending on what you need, but as a guide, to change the springs and oil in forks is £114, or the average revalve and respring is £438, including new seals and oil. An RT10 rear shock (designed for road or track use) is £498 for bikes like the VFR800, R1200GS etc, or £696 for a remote-reservoir version. It’s not pocket money, but keep in mind that the OE shock for a 2010 Fireblade is more than £1200, and Maxton’s prices for bespoke equipment look much more reasonable. Most of us ‘put up’ with our suspension, but only when you start to think about what your bike’s doing, and try a modified set-up, do you discover what you’re really capable of.

Inside a Maxton GP20 Fork Cartridge The bottom valve in the fork cartridge is for the compression damping, while the upper valve affects rebound. Needles adjust low-speed damping, and shim stacks affect high-speed by restricting oil-flow through the machined valve ports (the sprung shims prevent hydraulic lock). Going in for a closer look, our stripped parts here make up the rebound valve, with the four thin discs being the shim stack. You can also see the hole in the end of the fork rod, through which low-speed damping is regulated by the needle.

What is a Category D?

Why I bought a CBR600 John Milbank has travelled the length and breadth of the country looking for an exotic bike to buy. So why did he end up with one of the most common motorcycles in the UK?

IT’S ALL very well being told: “there’s no rush: there are plenty of good bikes about,” but when you’ve ridden 120 miles to see something you’ve set your heart on, it’s easy to become convinced that it’ll be the best one that’ll ever be for sale. I’m lucky that at least my level head appears when I’m checking a bike over, but I seem incapable of sifting out the crap when looking at listings online. I’ve spent a fortune on HPI checks, fuel to travel all over the country, and worst of all, time away from my family. I went to see one bike that was ‘excellent, besides a slight mark on the top fairing where it had been rubbed against the wall’. Presumably at 80mph, flipping as it went, because the deep scrapes went in two directions. Another was described as mint and original, yet the original stickers were still visible under the poorly painted tank. I’ve seen dodgy welding, nasty aftermarket indicators and machines that veered to one side, or even went into a vicious slap at 40mph. They weren’t all bad – an absolutely perfect Monster S4R was being sold by a really honest bloke, but he wouldn’t drop below the too-high £1000 asking price. My last bike was a stunning Ducati Monster S4. I missed it so much (it had a lot of emotional investment), that I even wrote to the guy I’d sold it to. No joy, but I’d been convinced I wanted either a higher-spec Monster, or something equally exotic. After three months of intensive searching, I stumbled upon a 2000 model CBR, just 15 miles from home. It wasn’t what I was looking for, but made me curious.

The seller was rather vague, and the pictures weren’t great, so I emailed for more info and a phone number. An unhappy man answered: “I’ve just had an email from a guy who ran an HPI. He says it’s a Cat D write-off. I guess you’re not interested anymore.” I thought I’d have a look anyway, and I’d owned two Cat Cs before, which are potentially worse. My guard was up when I arrived, and I wasn’t expecting much – there was no real service history, it’d been written off, and he’d bought it only four months ago. When I walked into his (big) house, I was immediately met by a mint 2000 CBR600 sitting in the hall. But not the one I’d come to see. It turns out that this guy’s first bike was one just like this, and he was collecting perfect, original machines. The bike for sale was in the garage, along with a mint CB750 and a Ducati 1198. There were more in the shed. Besides the write-off history, it had a light scuff on the fairing, and a scrape on the alternator cover. On the phone, he’d told me it looked like it had happened with the bike moving, not a gentle tumble. The funny thing is, this was the lightest damage I’d seen on a bike so far. He wanted £2000, but was wise enough to know that it wasn’t worth that with its history. I asked how much interest he’d had, and other than the guy who’d discovered the insurance claim, he’d had one caller offering £1200: “I said no, but that was before I found out about the Cat D.” I took the CBR out for a 20-minute test ride of twisty A-roads and motorway

miles: it felt perfect. In fact, it felt like the perfect bike for me. I was chucking it about with a confidence I hadn’t felt in years (probably since the two CBR600s I owned a long time ago). When I got back, I had to make a deal: “I’m in no rush to buy a bike, but I like it. We both know it’s got problems, so I’ll give you £1200 cash and ride it away today.” I felt bad about the dejected look on the guy’s face, but after a bit of thought he accepted. I rode away delighted that I’d got a good price on the bike, and he was happy that he hadn’t been buggered about too much, with some cash freed up to continue his collection of mint originals. I could end up finding something wrong with this bike, but despite its history, it’s one of the most honest I’ve seen.

What’s next?

The 600 needs a good service, so I’ve got my Haynes and Clymer workshop manuals (it’s possibly overkill to have two, but I like reading them), and an order placed with Wemoto.com for the service parts. I want to get a lot of use out of the CBR, so once it’s sorted I’ll be fitting crash protection from R&G. It’s such a goodlooking machine, it’d be a shame to spoil it if I was unlucky enough to have a spill.

Before starting to service the CBR, I popped over to BSD Performance (bsd.uk.com) for a dyno run. Top-end power was good at 98.72bhp, but the fuelling was awful. Fortunately, the figures make sense to mechanic/engineer/genius Mark Brewin: “At about 6000 revs, when the fuel starts passing the carbs’ needles, it’s going rich. Just after 10,000rpm, the needles are fully extended, and fuelling goes onto the main jet, where it’s lean again. The needles and emulsion tubes could be green and furry, but that’s what you’ll find out when you clean the carbs.” Looks like I’ve got another job to do then…

Written-off bikes and cars are typically divided into two categories. A and B are not available to the public, so you’re most likely to come across C or D: A No parts of the vehicle can be salvaged at all B Some parts may be salvaged C The cost of repair exceeds the value of the vehicle D The cost of repair is less than the value of the vehicle, but is deemed uneconomical for the insurance company to bother with. Be extra vigilant when checking over a bike with a history of being written-off (though no history doesn’t mean it hasn’t been crashed and repaired). Ask for evidence of the work done (or even see the original parts). Steel frames are a lot easier to straighten than alloy, and I’d prefer to know a bike had been on a frame jig after a drop (expect to pay around £90 for a check, plus labour if it needs any work). Take extra care to check for any play in the headstock, swingarm and wheel bearings. You’ll probably need to ask the seller to help you get each wheel off the ground to give them a wiggle. I was pretty confident about this bike as I knew it had been classified a Cat D in October 2010. By then, it wouldn’t have taken much for an insurance company to deem it uneconomical to repair. Something expensive like a Ducati with only a few miles on the clock could have a lot of serious damage before being deemed uneconomical. Don’t listen if you’re told that these categories are for cosmetic damage only – it’s all about the cost to repair, relative to the value of the bike. Finally, whatever you’re looking at, I thoroughly recommend the Optimate TS-120 battery and charging tester. I took it with me to every bike I saw. Connect it to the battery and it’ll tell you the charge level, the performance when starting, and the condition of the alternator. It’s £29.99, and could save you a lot of money, or give you an excellent opportunity to haggle. You can do these tests with a multimeter, but this is so much quicker and easier. The CBR I bought was difficult to start, but the tester reassured me that the battery had plenty of life left in it, and that the charging circuit was fine. Kawasaki GPz500S (1987-1994)

Words: Scott Redmond

The first of the budget bikes, a good GPz is a bargain today…

THE GPz500S fell between bikes like Yamaha’s revvy two-stroke RD350 YPVS, and Kawasaki’s own – once class-leading – four cylinder fourstroke GPz600R. The sporty looks were more than skin deep: with a minimalistic chassis it could turn a ride into something more exciting than on Suzuki’s GS500E, which would become its natural competition. We’re looking at the first model: the GPz500S A. This survived pretty much unchanged until 1994 when the D took over with its new clothes. The GPz500S quickly became a sales hit, offering affordable new biking at the time when the born-again-biker revolution was in full swing. Engine: The twin-cylinder configuration allows for a compact design and reasonable power. Kawasaki took the water-cooled engine from its iffy-looking EN450LTD custom and pulled it about a bit, increasing the capacity slightly to nearer 500cc. It also lost the ridiculous belt drive set-up. The result was a new, but old engine. It’s not the most civilised lump you’ll ever use, but its mixture of mechanical noises rarely results in destruction. Max power was quoted at around 60bhp.

Handling: The 16in wheels limit tyre size, and with basic suspension the handling is never going to tempt people away from sportsbikes. This is actually where the GPz scores though, as it’s easy to ride, and forgiving when need be, so makes for a perfect first big bike. Ride: For a smaller bike, the riding position is very comfy: the generous cut of the saddle is complemented by the sensibly placed, highish handlebars, that help to make this middleweight

feel even more manageable. Again, perfect for those who are just beginning their motorcycling careers. The weedy rear suspension isn’t really up to pillion work, though with something fresher from Hagon or the like, it could be easily improved. Equipment: Budget bikes won’t ever bristle with equipment, but they can be user-friendly. The clocks are clear and straightforward… even the mirrors work. The screen is quite low, but it’s okay for point-and-squirt riding, but if motorways feature daily you’d want to fit an aftermarket higher one. The single-disc front brake is surprisingly good, while the drum rear is also more than up to the job of bringing the GPz500S to a stop. A centre stand is welcome, but sometimes removed when fitting aftermarket exhausts. Worthy of a mention is the choke: on many 80s Kawasakis it’s a tricky thing to master, as you need to juggle the choke lever and throttle from cold. Finish: The fly in the GPz500S’s ointment is the finish: it’s terrible. Any example that’s lived outside and not had a sympathetic owner is best avoided. Original exhausts rotted years ago. Likewise suspension linkages and shocks will be in need of some love or replacing. The petrol tank is another area for concern, where rotted seams are common, and decent used tanks aren’t. Radiators are prone to corrosion, which obviously affects their ability to keep the water-cooled engine from overheating. Model history: The A model was launched in 1987, with 16in wheels and drum rear brake. In 1994 the D model appeared, with fresh bodywork, 17in wheels and rear disc brake being the obvious changes. The engine, frame and associated plumbing remained the same.

What to check: The engine is quite solid, though you should check for any abnormal rumblings from within. Generator flywheels are prone to breaking up, and finding a used one is rarely an option. Carbs can get faulty: the diaphragms can split which causes starting issues and poor running, but thankfully replacements are cheap. Check for corrosion: it attacks the poorly finished chassis and suspension. Brake calipers like to be serviced, and discs will quickly score if the caliper isn’t in tip-top condition. Standard shocks shouldn’t exist anymore, so if the bike doesn’t have a Hagon or similar fitted, negotiate the cost of a new one off the price. Three overall pros: Cheap, economical and fun on a budget. Three overall cons: Build quality; certain used parts are hard to find and 16in wheels make for costly tyre changes. Value for money: A budget bike when new, a bargain-basement bike now. Find a good one and you’ll be smiling, buy a nasty one and you’ll wish you hadn’t.

Servicing/maintenance: There’s nothing fancy to worry about here, just give it decent oil and filters when required. Always assume it hasn’t been serviced when buying used. Change the oil, filter, plugs and air filter from day one and then give it 12,000 miles or a year before doing it again. Used prices: £500 is all you need to find a decent GPz500S A model. For twice that amount you’ll get a corker of an early model. £1000 is about the starting point for a post-1994 facelift model.

46 ReadeR panel

www.motorcyclemonthly.co.uk

Who better to give you an honest biking opinion than another biker? Our reader panellists share their thoughts on the best bike they’ve ever owned. We’re happy to say that it’s not just us who get attached to our rides...

“A 2003 Triumph Thunderbird 900cc in red and silver in absolute mint condition. The sound from the Triumph TOR exhausts was amazing – like a spitfire taking off. Although it used to give me backache to ride, I still miss it. My 2005 Honda pan European is so good at what it does it’s almost boring compared to the Thunderbird.” Stephen Clarke, Shrewsbury

“A VF500F2E that I bought in 1986. At the time I was working in central London, clocking up around 170 commuting miles a week. The VF put the fun back into biking for me, and I found my mileage increased to 250 miles plus. None of the 18 or so bikes I have owned since have come close to matching the sheer perfection of that little diamond and with the added influence of nostalgia, I cannot imagine that any will in the future.” Nigel McMahon, Sandown, IoW

“An old Honda 750 Shadow. It had been repainted black at some time and had a lot of miles on the clock, but it started and ran faultlessly every time. I bought it at a time when I was fed up with biking, having owned a big Harley for several years that was a complete money pit. The Shadow’s reliability renewed my enthusiasm for riding – although the bike has long gone and I’ve owned several since, it’s the only bike I regret selling. It just worked.” Keith Betton, Bristol

“The best all-rounder is my 2013 BMW F800GT: Fast enough; economical; great handling and superb brakes. Okay, it doesn’t get the girls ripping their knickers off, but at my age, who cares?” Tony Griffiths, Buxton

“My Triumph Tiger 800 Road. A great bike, great engine, great all-rounder!” Roland Johns, Lincoln

“My ’03 Hinckley Bonneville – a good, solid, no-frills motorcycle. I’d done 102,000 miles when the camchain tensioner failed, snapping the camchain and essentially wrecking everything in the engine. Devastated didn’t quite cover it! My current Kawasaki Versys 650 runs a close second though!” Graham Mudd, Henlow

“A 1973 Yamaha DT175. It’s light, easy to fix and an absolute hoot to ride off-road and on minor roads. The DT can’t hope to compete with modern bikes, but it never fails to put a huge smile on my face every time I ride it.” Nigel Warwick, Kilcot, Gloucestershire “My BMW F800S. I rode it for over four years and eventually retired it with 47,000 miles on the clock. Every time I looked at it, I would take a moment to enjoy the fantastic lines of the bike. It took me safely and comfortably to Wales numerous times, Scotland and France twice and never missed a beat. I even took it out on the track and had a fantastic time.” Ross Mulder, Broxbourne

MCM is YOUR free paper, so as well as bringing you the latest news and inspiring features, we want to hear what YOU have to say. Each month, we’ll be emailing our 500+ strong reader panel with a few questions, covering everything from their opinions of the latest bikes, to riding tips, workshop workarounds and clothing dilemmas. Why not email your details to readerpanel@motorcyclemonthly.co.uk and we’ll add you to the group.
