Independently proven pick up: 67,698 copies
Yamaha has released details of its new MT-09 street focused machine… for just £6799. The 850cc, liquid-cooled, DOHC four-valve, transverse three-cylinder powered naked middleweight boasts a claimed 115bhp @ 10,5000rpm with 62lb-ft of torque at 8500rpm. This performance will easily take on its big rival, the everpopular Triumph Street Triple. Designed with the European market firmly in mind, the new MT-09 looks to be one of the lightest machines in the 700cc+ class – at a claimed 188kg (ABS version 191kg), it’s
lighter than an R6. Yamaha claim it’s achieved 10kg weight savings in the engine, and a further 10kg in the
chassis to get this figure (when you compare it to the likes of a four-cylinder FZ8). The MT-09 features

There are various mileage options available: go for 120 miles or the maximum challenge of 540 miles. The idea behind the rally is that riders start at one control and then travel to the maximum number of controls within the 540 mile limit. Riders plan the routes between the checkpoints beforehand, making sure they know what their weekend’s riding will be. Volunteers man each checkpoint – some controls have cakes and goodies for riders too, plus sleep areas. Entry fees vary depending on the

HAVE YOUR SAY Scooters… yay or nay in MCM? After Keith Hewitt’s suggestion in the last issue of wanting more scooters in MCM, we’ve had a lot of positive response. Here’s some feedback so far... I would just like say that Keith Hewitt’s idea for a twopage, scooter-only section each month is a great idea. I ride a 125 scooter and a GS and appreciate their different characteristics. When you consider that so many young people ride scooters, to ignore them just because they don’t ride ‘proper’ motorbikes is short-sighted. Unfortunately, many young scooter riders are shunned by ‘proper’ bikers when attending rallies and festivals, which is a great shame. We all ride for the freedom that two wheels gives us – the more
enlightened bikers among us already appreciate this. I think MCM can do a lot to bring about this integration, and I would certainly welcome reading about scooters more often. Tom Kennedy Yes, include a scooter section. I’m also a long-term subscriber to T&G and like the new layout. I’m a maxi-scooter rider and own a Burgman 650 Executive and a 400. I can honestly say after years of changing gears and having no standard storage, that I love these scooters for their ease of use (twist and go), weather protection and storage, and will never go back to geared motorcycles. ★ MCM STAR LETTER OF THE MONTH Don’t believe everything you read... Dear MCM
How refreshing to find a magazine that reports with a dose of common sense, as I am feeling quite annoyed at the moment. I’ve recently had the pleasure of test riding a Honda Deauville NT700. Yes I know, the ‘Dullsville’ according to the power ranger fraternity, but can I say that it is probably one of the best bikes I’ve ridden in a long time. The bike’s got brilliant handling, superb comfort, a dash that is easy to read, luggage space that will keep your gear dry and secure, plus a five-way adjustable screen. It’s a bike that’ll take you anywhere you want to go in comfort and provide a lot of fun on twisties too. Remember, you don’t have to go round corners at warp speed to enjoy a
good road. You also don’t need a bike that weighs the same as the Titanic to go touring. No, the Deauville won’t do 160mph in first gear (thank God), but it will happily sit at 80mph all day long and get you 200 miles to your next fill-up without the need of a chiropractor and the cost of a good lawyer to get you off a possible driving ban. Finally, I’ve had sports bikes, street bikes and everything in between from 200 to 1300cc, but I have enjoyed them all. I’ve never had a dull bike in my life and the Deauville is no different. In case you’re wondering, I did buy it. Oh, and the reason I’m hacked off? If I hadn’t listened to the reviews of this bike (in the other mainstream bike press), I would have had one years ago! Robert Paton

10 First ride BMW F 800 GS Adventure
Full of
Adventure BMW’s new F 800 GS Adventure has all the practicality of its bigger brother in a more manageable package Words: Jon Urry Photography: Llewellyn Pavey
www.motorcyclemonthly.co.uk
WITH the whole world going adventure bike crazy, there seems to be no end to the number of bikes claiming to be the ideal transport to take you into the wilderness. However, where some are style over substance, BMW has always prided itself in the fact its bikes are designed to actually take on rough terrain and won’t get floored by a particularly tricky gravel drive. Not that many actually get the chance, but it’s always nice to know you can escape civilisation should the zombie apocalypse strike... Yet there is a problem with large capacity adventure machines such as the BMW R 1200 GS, Triumph Tiger Explorer and KTM 1190 Adventure, and that is their size. A bike that tips the scales at around the 240kg mark before you add luggage can be quite a handful for those with limited offroad experience: throw in a few ruts and the like and very quickly things can go from bad to worse. And it isn’t only off-road where the weight of big capacity adventure bikes can be intimidating: older, shorter and even less experienced riders can often find the long suspension, tall seat heights and top-heavy nature of an off-road inspired bike problematic. Which is where the F 800 GS comes in. Designed as a light, responsive and yet still extremely capable on- and off-road bike, the F 800 GS was launched in 2008 as an ideal solution for those wanting a bike that is manageable in all environments. For 2013 BMW has increased the baby GS’s potential even further by creating an Adventure variant.
BMW F 800 GS Adventure First ride11

Main rival
Triumph Tiger 800 XC £8699
The Tiger has a fabulous 800cc triple engine that is packed full of grunt and character but it is less off-road oriented than the BMW and the 19-litre tank also means it has a reduced range. With a £1000 saving over the BMW, Triumph riders can afford to splash the difference on a set of hard luggage, but if you are looking at touring rather than off-road the more street-oriented Tiger 800 is probably a better option as it costs £8199 with ABS.
Red colour scheme is more eye-catching
What’s new?
In much the same way that BMW created the first R 1150 GS Adventure in 2002, the F 800 GS Adventure uses the standard model GS as a base to build upon to create a more rugged machine. The GS’s engine, frame, swingarm, wheels and suspension remain unaltered (although the suspension’s internals are modified to suit the new bike). The underseat petrol tank also increases in size by 50% with a 24-litre capacity, boosting the bike’s range to a claimed 250 miles. This larger tank has necessitated the seat height increasing 10mm to 890mm – part of this rise is due to the seat being redesigned with more padding (a lower 860mm seat is an option). On the styling front the Adventure gains engine protector bars, pannier mounts, enduro pegs, bar guards and a taller screen. As with the whole of BMW’s 2013 model range the GS comes with ABS as factory fit but should you opt to add ASC (traction control), the Adventure has a new ‘enduro’ mode that reduces the effect
of the ASC while increasing the ABS’s sensitivity. This mode is only available on the Adventure, so standard GS model owners need to rely on talent/bravado when they go off-road.
What’s it like to ride?
With such a large increase in fuel capacity (eight litres) located so high on the bike I was expecting the Adventure to have slightly sluggish handling. Happily, the Adventure’s agility doesn’t feel like it has been affected at all by the larger tank. On the road the BMW retains the manoeuvrability of the stock machine while its comfort levels are vastly improved thanks to the addition of the new seat and screen. Bliss is the word when it comes to describing the new seat, which is so deeply cushioned that I reckon you could easily clear off the 250-mile tank range without the slightest hint of discomfort. The screen, which is a touch purposeful in its looks, is just the right height to deflect enough wind without impeding your vision while the rest of the riding position is relaxed and comfortable. BMW hasn’t altered the 798cc motor at all for the new bike and although it seems a bit quieter than last time I rode a GS, it performs equally as well. The 85bhp and 61lb-ft of torque the parallel twin delivers is more than enough to allow you to cruise along at a steady 70mph, but more importantly it has enough grunt to reduce the gear changes required as you vary your speed. It’s not the most thrilling of engines out there and feels a touch German in its functionality, but by the same token it is also very hard to fault. The bigger capacity air-cooled R 1200 GS came in for similar criticism about a lack of character but that didn’t ❱ exactly affect its sales.

12 First ride BMW F 800 GS Adventure
Handy extra front lights
Incredibly comfy well-padded seat
During the Adventure launch we did some very light off-road riding on what are best described as muddy fire tracks. Selecting ‘enduro’ mode I found the ABS system extremely quick to activate, a safety net that an off-road novice like myself found reassuring. You could brake in complete safety on wet mud with the front calipers rapidly applying and then releasing the brakes as they sensed a slide. However, I am not so convinced by the rear brake’s sensitivity. The ABS was so good that it made skidding the back impossible, something that I think would be useful for off-road riders. Personally I’d like to have seen a system that has ABSon the front only when ‘enduro’ is activated, but others may disagree. The ASC, which becomes slightly less intrusive in ‘enduro’ mode, worked very well, allowing the rear to slide slightly so you can hang it out with a degree of safety. As with the ABS this can be turned off to gain extra traction in deep mud.
www.motorcyclemonthly.co.uk BMW is aiming the F 800 GS Adventure at riders who are looking to take their first steps into the adventure bike world as well as those who are possibly looking to downgrade from a heavy larger capacity machine. The smaller 800 is far less cumbersome than the 1200 GS and although two-up it may struggle due to its lack of power, when it comes to low-speed manoeuvrability and off-road potential I reckon it is a far better bet. Where some riders opt for the R 1200 GS on image alone, I think they may well be better looking at the F 800 GS as it opens doorways that the bigger bike possibly doesn’t. Stick on a set of proper off-road tyres (these come free if you specify when you buy the GS), and you have a bike that as well as being an excellent commuter is also a competent off-roader that can be enjoyed on light trails. The crash bars (I’d also get the optional bash plate), should protect it from most of the damage and at 229kg wet the Adventure is
heavy but not overwhelming like the 1200. It may be more likely to be found in Dagenham than Dakar, but the F 800 GS Adventure is a good looking, rugged, adventure bike that is certainly capable of taking on considerably more than just the UK’s potholes.
Which model?
In typical BMW fashion the F 800 GS Adventure comes in a variety of guises. The base Adventure is £9650 with an ‘Adventure Travel’ costing £10,535. For your extra £885 you get ASC, heated grips, LED auxiliary lights, a centrestand and the BMW onboard computer, which represents a saving of £665 over buying the items separately and speccing up a stock bike. A special ‘launch pack’ is also being offered that costs £1637.63 and includes aluminium panniers, a top case and the new Adventure GPS. If you order this before June 30, 2013 you get an extra 20% off, reducing its price to £1310.10.

Working on your bike saves money and boosts confidence. This month: how to set up your bike to fit you Words & Photography: Mel Falconer
Taking a few minutes to set up your bike properly can mean the difference between being comfy, fresh and able to ride all day and feeling achy, fatigued and grumpy. It’s surprising how the most basic tweaks can make such a positive impact on you and your riding. Tools you’ll need: 8-14mm open-ended spanners, plus ratchet and 8-12mm sockets.
1: Correct lever set-up. Badly angled/adjusted levers can cause wrist pain as it forces your hand to operate the brake and clutch in the wrong position. The fingers on top of the lever should roughly be in line with the top of your forearm when you are in a normal riding position. If your wrist is forced to sit at an angle (feels like it’s bent too far backwards), it will cause a gradual build-up of achiness. Adjust your levers by undoing the two nuts on the handlebar and swivel the lever until it’s in the correct position. If you have a 1-5 span adjuster, use it to fine-tune the reach. Another thing to watch out for is a lever interfering with other bar controls, such as the passing switch (as shown here). This lever is set too high, so that when it’s pulled back, it hits the passing switch. ● Top tip: When adjusting levers, make sure to check the position and reach is still suitable when you switch to winter gloves or vice versa.
1
2: Mirrors. Seems obvious, but you need as clear a view behind you as
possible – a load of elbow filling your view isn’t much use. Loose mirrors that can suddenly swing round aren’t fun either: make sure the mirror nuts are done up tight. In some instances, the right-hand mirror will have a left-hand thread for the adjuster nut – if in doubt, be careful when adjusting.
3
3: Adjusting your gear lever correctly means no (hopefully) missed gears or sore toes. Too low and it will cause pain changing up the gearbox; too high will result in missed gears, especially first and second. The correct level of adjustment is so your foot fits well under and over the lever – this will help with reducing fatigue during riding.

5: Static sag. There are various methods to do this, but a quick and easy way (Matt’s method), is to measure the bike stood on its wheel, from the axle to a point on the subframe directly above it (a handy friend is useful here to hold the bike). Then, lift the bike up so the shock tops out – you are not trying to lift the wheel off the floor. Repeat two or three times to get a consistent average reading. A good ballpark figure for normal road bikes (not enduros or trailies) is 8-12mm static sag (this Honda CB500F had 10mm). Too little sag risks the suspension topping out when bike is leant over; too much means the bike’s geometry is out of kilter.
4: The rear brake pedal is important to get right too: too high will cause cramp in your ankle and result in poor filtering control; too low will cause overstretching and ineffective brake use. It will also mean your foot could rest on the brake pedal while riding, dragging the brake. You should be able to reach the pedal by slightly raising your foot from a normal seating position on the bike. To adjust, undo lock nut and adjuster. The adjuster nut will be obscured by the rear brake master cylinder boot, so just push it up out of the way.
6: Levels: the correct quantity of oil and coolant are important. With oil, you will get a sight glass or dipstick option to check the level. With the engine warm, get a mate to hold the bike upright and look in the sight glass on the bottom of the right-hand side of the motor. The oil needs to be between the full and empty markings. With dipsticks, check your manual, as some bikes need checking on the stand or held upright. Some dipsticks are screwed in, some are just placed in. Make sure you know which type your bike has – if you accidently screw a placedin stick in, you will read that the oil is overfilled. Check the dipstick by wiping it clean then re-inserting it and removing it again – the oil mark needs to be between the low and full marks.

16 RIDER TRAINING THINK! campaign defensive riding skills
MCM reader Aaron learns how defensive riding can help him to stay safer Words & photography: Mel Falconer “NEVER take a chance, always take an opportunity.” Wise words indeed, but let’s face it, most people who ride a motorcycle have taken one or two chances in their riding career. To make riders more aware of the risks they face on the roads of the United Kingdom and what they can do to minimise such risks, renowned road safety campaign
THINK! has launched a new riderfocused initiative. This campaign, run by the Department for Transport (DfT) is based on the premise of defensive riding and its benefits, such as a smoother, controlled and safer ride. As a campaign partner, MCM ran a competition for three readers to win a Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) training day, courtesy of the DfT.
This RoSPA Rider Development Day means our lucky winners got to spend a day with a qualified RoSPA bike training instructor. The training comprised an individual riding assessment followed by rider development advice and practical coaching to help riders get the most out of their riding while staying in control at the same time. MCM accompanied one of our competition winners, Aaron Seymour, on his day to see what it was all about… Myself, Aaron, and RoSPA instructor and training manager Stuart Bullock met up at 9.30am in Northampton. Twenty-three-year-old Aaron started riding on a moped at 16 and bought his Suzuki RF600R when he was 19, restricting it for the first two years. An electrician by trade, he does his own bike maintenance and was born into a bikemad family: his dad rides a Yamaha XJR750 and his uncle used to race too. “My mum entered me, my brother and my dad into the competition, but I was the one that won,” explains Aaron. “I wanted to do the course as I’d like to feel even more in control on the road and see where my riding can be improved,
Roundabouts are full of hazards, such as impatient drivers pulling out and diesel spills
www.motorcyclemonthly.co.uk especially when cornering,” he says. Instructor Stu listens and nods. As an ex-police officer who spent most of his time in the traffic division (even being part of the bike unit escorting the Royals), he knows a thing or two about a controlled, safe and enjoyable ride. After a brief from Stu on defensive riding and how to recognise the unique risks motorcyclists face, it was out onto the roads. The 65 mile route was a triangle from Daventry to Banbury and back to Daventry on varying A and B roads plus dual carriageways. As I was riding behind both Stu and Aaron, I was able to clearly see the differences in road positioning, speed and overtaking confidence between the two. As we stopped after the first stretch, Stu showed Aaron how to use the road to his advantage and for the best possible visibility, as Aaron, even though a confident rider, wasn’t using all of the road to help himself, especially when overtaking. Stu went over how to overtake safely and quickly, including forward observation, sorting gears and speed out and positioning for a clean overtake.
Instructor Stu explains the finer points of forward observation Aaron, by positioning himself too close to the vehicle in front (in this case, an HGV), couldn’t see enough to judge when to overtake and ended up stuck behind, in too high a gear, so couldn’t react quickly when a safe overtaking opportunity arose. After we set off again, it was almost immediately clear how Aaron had taken on Stu’s advice – the next few cars and lorries were passed safely and with ease. The next revelation for Aaron was learning how to recognise the limit or vanishing point. Aaron wanted to improve cornering, as he felt he wasn’t riding them correctly. Stu, through some fantastic anecdotes and drawing instruction, showed Aaron ways to make cornering easier and smoother. As we set off again, we soon came across a fantastic set of flowing bends, and again, it was obvious how Aaron had taken Stu’s advice on board as he was judging the angle and severity of each bend much better, which allowed him to adjust his entry speed accordingly. What was apparent to me was how the whole day was tailored around the individual rider and what they wanted to improve, balanced by learning useful defensive riding techniques too. Stu was stuffed full of useful tips and tricks, and imparted his knowledge in a clear, concise but never patronising way,

Having a breather which definitely worked, judging by how much Aaron’s riding had improved after just four hours. What was also useful was how Stu also explained how to rectify a situation after you had got into trouble, e.g. running wide in a corner and going in too hot. He also went over how to defuse a situation quickly if you did have an altercation with another road user. Confrontation tends to affect motorcyclists more than other road users in terms of concentration and mood afterwards, potentially compromising safety.
Other areas covered included positive throttle, how to get the most out of your midrange, using gears effectively and braking safely. No matter how good a rider you think you are, there is always room for improvement, and that’s true of everything in life, not just riding. I found myself being reminded of good riding technique, as it’s so easy to slip into bad habits when you’ve been riding for a long time. The one-to-one tuition is a great

18 First ride Ducati Hyperstrada
Hyper practical Ducati’s new Hyperstrada has supermoto style with genuine sports touring ability
Words: Roland Brown Photography: Milagro
www.motorcyclemonthly.co.uk Almost every time I exit a bend on the Hypermotard, its eight-valve V-twin engine revving sweetly and barking through the stubby silencer behind my right boot, there’s another stunning view of Tuscany’s rolling hillsides and cypress trees in a landscape fit for an oil painting. More importantly, the area around Montepulciano also has countless smoothsurfaced turns, a friendly climate and surprisingly little traffic, at least in May. But before you can ride in a motorcyclist’s paradise like this you’ve got to get there. That’s the thinking that inspired Ducati to create the Hyperstrada. In the words of Paolo Quattrino, the firm’s product manager: “This bike was made to let its rider enjoy curves a long way from home.”
What’s new?
Ducati describes the Hyperstrada as a touring bike. That’s stretching things a bit, given the model on which it’s so closely based. Essentially it’s a modified and accessorised version of the Hypermotard, the lean and simple supermoto styled V-twin that has traded on its hooligan reputation ever since its launch six years ago. Converting the ’Motard into anything resembling a tourer would have been almost impossible until this year’s introduction of a comprehensively updated version, designed to be more practical and rider-friendly. One major change was the model’s first liquid-cooled engine, an 821cc unit developed with long-stroke dimensions for a broad
spread of power. Another was the longer chassis, designed partly to improve high-speed stability, especially with luggage. Luggage is the most obvious addition to the Hyperstrada, which is fitted with panniers as standard. It also has a proper screen in place of the Hypermotard’s stubby shield, longer mudguards at both ends, and a wider and reshaped seat. New forks give 20mm less travel; the shock gains a hydraulic remote preload adjuster. A centrestand and two 12v sockets are further civilising touches. The Hyperstrada might officially be a new model but it felt almost identical to its supermoto sibling as I climbed aboard at the launch venue in the ancient Tuscan spa village of Bagno Vignoni. The seat is 20mm lower than the Hypermotard’s, but at 850mm still pretty tall, though the suspension compresses enough that riders of average height shouldn’t find the relatively light Ducati – at 204kg wet it’s 6kg up on the ’Motard – too much of a handful. The view below the non-adjustable screen is of an unchanged instrument console, with its row of warning lights above a digital panel. The tacho bar sits above a display containing the speedo plus details of the riding mode, selectable via the indicator button. The dohc V-twin engine is unchanged, so makes a maximum of 110bhp in Sport and Touring modes, which differ in their throttle response; and 75bhp with softer delivery in Urban. Another reason for the Hypermotard’s new chassis was to move the rider slightly further back, giving a more upright riding position with feet further forward. The Hyperstrada’s new handlebar risers elevate the one-piece bar by 20mm, so you sit slightly more upright still.
Despite that I had the typical supermoto feeling of being right over the front wheel as I let out the light clutch and headed for the Tuscan hills.
What’s it like to ride?
Immediately the bike felt wonderfully responsive, light and rider-friendly, as well as entertainingly quick. Ducati did a good job in developing this new Hyper family engine, rather than choosing the simpler option of using the 848cc eight-valver from the Streetfighter. The long-stroke motor’s benefits were clear as the bike grunted effortlessly and fairly smoothly forward from below 4000rpm. I found the ride-by-wire injection system’s throttle response excellent, in either Touring or Sport mode. The latter gave slightly sharper acceleration and required a touch more finesse when accelerating out of the endless succession of tight bends, so mostly I stuck to Touring. (Urban was fine through villages, but hardly worth bothering with in the dry.) Changing mode also affects the setting of the eight-way adjustable DTC traction control system, which I was barely aware of but is useful to have. This mid-sized ’Strada can’t match the punch of the 150bhp Multistrada but still has heaps of straight-line stomp. It was enjoyably quick whether grunting out of bends at under 6000rpm or revving smoothly through the gears towards the 9250rpm mark at which peak power is delivered, heading for a top speed of around 130mph. The Ducati was a riot on these twisty and fairly narrow roads, and it was also enjoyably rapid on the more open SR2 heading north back towards Bagno Vignoni. One advantage of naked bikes like the Hypermotard, on a fine day at least, is that the wind pressure helps make them feel faster and more
Ducati Hyperstrada First ride 19
www.motorcyclemonthly.co.uk entertaining. Obviously that’s slightly less true of the ’Strada, whose screen diverted some of the breeze from my chest, but this is still a bike that’s exciting at relatively sensible speeds. The Hyperstrada handled superbly, its wide bars, light weight and fairly racy geometry helping to make it effortlessly flickable. Its reduced fork travel, relative to the Hypermotard, was presumably the reason for its more neutral steering, as there was none of the supermoto
Main rival KTM 990 Supermoto T £9995
The SM-T does what the Hyperstrada is attempting to replicate by making a versatile, practical bike out of a hardcore supermoto V-twin. In the KTM’s case the 999cc dohc, eight-valve unit makes 114bhp, so is slightly more powerful than the smaller capacity desmo lump. The Austrian bike weighs 197kg without fuel, so very close to the Hyperstrada’s figure. Its tubular steel frame holds WP suspension and features Brembo’s four-pot radial calipers. The SM-T costs a bit less than the Hyperstrada, but doesn’t come with panniers or some of the Ducati’s other features as standard. It’s a very
model’s slight reluctance to turn in unless its geometry has been steepened by hard braking. The Hyperstrada simply went where it was aimed, with minimal effort required, and didn’t even complain too much if I added a dab of front brake on entering a turn. Ride quality was good, as you’d expect with a fairly generous 150mm of travel at each end. But although the usd Kayaba forks have no facility for adjustment, they coped okay even when the superb, ABS-equipped Brembo monobloc front brake was being used to its eyeball-loosening best, in conjunction with the grippy, dualpurpose Pirelli Scorpion Trail front tyre. That said, we didn’t ride with a pillion, whose extra weight might have given the suspension a hard time. Especially at the rear, where the shock was soft enough to let the centrestand scrape occasionally, mostly when the bike was weighed down by dips in the road. At least the Sachs unit has the remote preload adjuster, so it was a minute’s work to twist it from the original low setting and gain some extra clearance. After a 100-mile blast with barely a dull moment the Hyperstrada had very much delivered on that promise to make its rider enjoy a curvy road far from home. Whether I’d have enjoyed riding to Tuscany from far away is another matter. For all its touring pretentions, the Ducati isn’t ideal for sitting on a motorway. That screen gives some useful chest protection but unlike the Multistrada’s it can’t be adjusted, so most riders will suffer from turbulence. I had no aches or pains on our fairly short ride, and the reasonably broad seat seemed comfortable, but the Ducati would probably feel slightly cramped two-up unless the pillion was very small. At least the pillion is pretty well taken care of, with a seat that’s flatter than the Hypermotard’s, a 12v
socket of their own, and solid grabhandles that double as the luggage rack and mount for the accessory top-box. The panniers are made from ABS/ nylon laminate, which seems tough, but they zip up so aren’t very secure (even if padlocked). They’re also not very big, and lose some space if you want to carry their waterproof covers. On the other hand they’re very easy to open and were undeniably useful. It’s a shame there’s no opportunity to upgrade to larger, lockable ones, though. The Hyperstrada is more practical than you might expect of a bike so closely related to the ’Motard. Both models benefit from this year’s introduction of a larger, 16-litre tank. Combined with the engine’s impressive fuel efficiency – I averaged just over 50mpg – that should give a useful range of around 170 miles. The mirrors aren’t very big and had an annoying tendency to move on their mounts. The centrestand will make maintenance easier, as will the engine’s generously long service intervals of
Strada handles impeccably with decent ride quality too
9000 miles for minor and twice that for major ones. Having begun the day expecting the Hyperstrada to be entertaining but too narrowly focused, I ended the ride concluding that it’s the Ducati that I’d be most likely to buy. Rather than a touring bike, it’s really more of a middleweight sports-tourer – and an excellent one.
The Hyperstrada is an interesting middleweight sports-tourer

Technology
Confusingly, there are several technologies behind intercoms but these can be divided roughly into three groups:
Acoustic
Like a steamship’s captain talking to an engineer in the engine room, an acoustic intercom uses a system of tubes to carry sound between rider and pillion. These systems have no way to amplify the speaker’s voice so wind noise can become an issue as speed increases, especially on unfaired machines. The main benefit of this system is price due to the lack of need for any electronics. Cons include the already mentioned wind noise and the rider/pillion need to be connected and disconnected each time one or the other mounts/ dismounts the bike. If you’re on a strict budget then this type of system could be for you.
Wired
Words: Ben Wilkins
The right intercom system can prove it’s good to talk on a bike. Here’s what you need to know... Motorcycling by its very nature is a solo activity and many of us enjoy getting out for a ride on our own to take in the view or collect our thoughts. That’s often the case when out riding with friends too; having a bit of fun by yourself but stopping after a spin to have a cuppa and chat about the ride. But how often have you found yourself gesticulating or shouting to your buddy at a set of traffic lights or overtaking to show
them the way you want to go? Even the old ‘point at the tank’ message to show you need fuel can be misinterpreted. Believe us, here at MCM we’ve taken many a wrong turn when an obscure gesture has been misread more than once... However, it’s not just when you have to tell your mate you need fuel. Riders and pillions often need to communicate too. Again, it’s normally through a series of signals, taps on the
shoulder or shouting at each other through open visors. There’s also that annoying buzz of the phone in your pocket indicating a phone call you’re going to miss. These are just some of the scenarios where an intercom could come in seriously handy. There’s a baffling array of systems on the market, so here’s MCM’s Rough Guide to Intercoms to steer you towards the right purchase for you.
As the name implies, connection between the pillion and rider is by means of wires. However, not all wired intercoms are the same... prices can range from as little as £20 for a basic rider to pillion connection right up to £300 plus for a top of the range system which allows the Bluetooth connection of multiple telephones, music or GPS as well as the connection of PMR radios for bike to bike communication (see Wireless for more information). In a nutshell, the main benefit of a simple wired system is price, while the benefits of an expensive system include connection flexibility, no need for syncing of headsets between between rider and pillion and no need to charge the headsets each evening (as with Bluetooth systems) as they take their power from the bike’s battery. These high-end wired intercoms are typically popular with riders/pillions who favour long distance touring.
Wireless
By far the vast majority of intercoms available for communicating from bike to bike (and also rider to pillion) now utilise Bluetooth, the same wireless technology commonly associated with computers and telephone headsets. However, there are some systems that utilise PMR (Private Mobile Radio) ‘walkie talkies’ to communicate from bike to bike. Autocom’s Spa Kit2

time rather than having to
wait for the other person to finish before talking (as with a ‘walkie talkie’). The range of Bluetooth systems varies hugely depending on the price of the unit and the manufacturer; a cheaper system might offer a 10m range whereas a more expensive system can offer up to 800m in a one to one configuration and 1.5km if several riders are connected at the same time. The latest Bluetooth 3 systems allow a larger range than the earlier Bluetooth 2 versions. Some ‘solo’ or ‘rider’ Bluetooth headsets allow you to connect to your mobile phone to make and receive calls between you and a fellow rider, listen to music or GPS instructions. Because this type

channel open between you and another rider so a call needs to be made each time you wish to talk (and if you have no telephone signal you cannot communicate either). In general, one manufacturer’s system will not be able to communicate with another manufacturer’s. You’ll need to have the same system as your pillion or riding buddies.
As with wired intercoms, not all Bluetooth headsets are the same. Price is probably the most useful way to distinguish between types – the more you pay the bigger the feature set and the larger the range available from bike to bike. Bluetooth systems often allow the connection of multiple riders at the same time in a ‘broadcast’ type connection so everybody in the group can hear what’s being said. A benefit of the Bluetooth system is full duplex operation where, like a telephone,
Private Mobile Radio ‘Walkie talkie’ is the name often given to PMR handsets. Some headsets have PMR transmitters built in and mount on the side of a helmet while others are handsets that require putting in a pocket or under the seat of a bike and a wire is used to connect the unit to the microphone and speaker in the helmet. Operation is by way of either voice activation (VOX) or a Push-To-Talk (PTT) button mounted on the bike’s handlebars. Most systems come with both the handsets and headsets but others are headsets only, allowing you to choose the
handsets you wish to use. The main benefit of a PMR system is range, often up to 12km or more can be achieved between a pair of handsets. The downside is conversation is half duplex, or one at a time only – you have to wait for the other person to finish transmitting before you can speak/transmit. Be aware that some intercoms for sale in the US (FRS and GMRS which utilise part of the UHF frequency band) are not legal for use in the UK as the radio frequency at which they operate is used by some UK emergency services ❱

THREE BEST BUYS
THINGS TO CONSIDER What features do you need?
Do you just want to talk to your pillion or do you need to talk to a group of riders? Depending on how often you ride your bike and for how long, the ability to make or receive telephone calls, listen to music or even have step by step audible GPS directions could be important functions to have in a system. Some models include an FM tuner, Bluetooth or wired connections to both your music player and/or GPS unit. The more you pay for an intercom the more comprehensive the features will be. If music is an important consideration then search for an intercom with stereo headphones. Systems which employ noise reduction and digital signal processing (DSP) to reduce wind noise from the microphone give clearer sound as speeds build. Automatic volume adjustment is also a useful feature so the volume of speech/music increases as wind noise increases.
Mounting
Does the unit need to go under the seat or be connected to the bike battery? If so, then check you have the space available. If it’s helmet mounted, will the unit fit on your particular helmet?
Range
At what distance do you really need to stay in touch with your riding mates? Most of the time you’re unlikely to be more than a few hundred metres away from your buddy. As mentioned previously, range varies hugely from 10m for a cheap Bluetooth system right up to 12km or more for a PMR-based ‘walkie talkie’ system.
Operation
The less buttons an intercom has, and the larger the buttons, the easier it will be to use. Ensure you can use the system you’re considering purchasing with the gloves you’ll be wearing. Comfort Some systems have earplugs, which can become uncomfortable over a period of time, while others have ear pads/speakers which mount inside the lining of your helmet. Thicker speakers will be more difficult to make comfortable, depending on the space in your helmet. Make sure the microphone will fit inside the chinbar of your helmet and not irritate you as you ride.
Power
This depends on your needs: will you be riding for just a few hours, for a day or for days on end without a chance to charge the batteries? If you don’t have a chance to charge every night, a system which plugs into your bike’s battery may suit you. Intercoms which don’t feed from your bike will need to be recharged so look for good standby and talk times. Recharge time might also be a consideration.

24 MCM long-term test bike Honda CB500F
City savvy The first month with Honda’s naked CB500F Words: Mel Falconer After the first four weeks with the CB500F I have come to a conclusion: it’s definitely more rewarding to ride a smaller bike quickly than it is to ride a bigger bike slowly. Living in London means I barely get out of third gear and above 50mph, so the F’s docile but very flexible 471cc powerplant means I’m using the parallel twin motor’s low and mid range oomph on 75% of my rides. To demonstrate the engine’s
Photography: Dan Wooller willingness, I’ve been able to pull away from the lights in third just as easily as giving it some up to its 8500rpm redline. On a couple of trips down the motorway, it gets up to decent speeds quite quickly, prompting me to throttle back a bit when the killjoy 60mph variable speed limit cameras are in action on the M25. I think Honda’s done a pretty good job with this new motor – it may ‘only’ have 46.9bhp to play with, but I prefer it to the NC700S’s engine.
The CB-F has a higher redline for a start (6500rpm for the 700), and although the 700 has slightly more low down pick-up, the CB-F revs better and I think handles more precisely too. Fuel economy is taking a while to settle down as I mainly use the bike for short, sharp blasts, but at the time of typing, I have just achieved my best ever mileage: 181 miles before going onto the reserve trip countdown. With a little more coaxing, I’d like to see over 200 before getting that little red flashing bar. While I’m on about the handling, it is stable and you can flick the bike around easily, great for darting in and out of snarled-up traffic. However, get the CBF spinning up out of the city on a fast twisty road and the suspension starts to complain just a little. It feels a little under-damped, which isn’t a biggie (this bike isn’t about balls-out, knee-down scratching), but if you do get a wiggle on through the corners, you notice it. Of course, that niggle is only something more experienced riders will find out – the fact remains that 500s are still really good machines on which to build up confidence (and speed) for newer riders before graduating to something bigger if needed. While the fairly low pegs are perfectly placed for an easy-going riding position, if you are bend-swinging enthusiastically then they will start to have an effect on ground clearance. Again, only an issue if you are really hustling. It’s also quite a comfortable bike for a naked and is incredibly easy to ride. The high-ish, wide bars make for a more upright riding position than its CBR sibling, and the shorter reach to the bars is noticeable if you have ridden both versions – great news for shorter riders. Filtering is easy work too – the CB-F feels very compact and changes direction almost without thinking about it. The only thing that prevents me

squeezing into all but the tightest spots are the mirrors, as they are quite high and stick out at just the wrong height for Transits and the like. A switch to fold them in quickly, a la the new Burgman 650, would be nice! On the accessories front, I will be fitting a proper screen as wind noise and buffeting above 70mph is apparent and quite tiring, as I discovered on a windy, wet 100+ mile ride to Deal and back. The only other thing I’d like are the optional heated grips, which were fitted to the launch bikes. They are £350 extra, but worth it in my opinion. Even in the summer, they come in handy, especially if you get caught out wearing perforated summer gloves when it chucks it down. With these small but useful additions, the CB-F should be even more practical than it already is. The CB-F is designed to be affordable, economical yet still offer a bit of fun... and so far, it is.

28 second-hand bike buying gide Aprilia SL1000 Falco
www.motorcyclemonthly.co.uk
Lusty performance, top build quality and great value from this left-field Italian V-twin Words: Ben Wilkins Aprilia’s half-faired SL1000 Falco is extremely popular with owners and something of an underrated V-twin bargain, yet it wasn’t a particularly roaring sales success. With an engine, suspension and brakes from the track-oriented RSV1000, the Falco offers a lot of machine for the money and sits between sport and sports-tourer for those who prefer their sports bikes to have a touch of comfort and practicality – exactly what Aprilia was getting at with the SL (Sportiva Leggera or Lightweight Sports) designation. Engine: Sharing the same 998cc 60° Rotax-built V-twin as in the early Aprilia RSV Mille, the Falco’s water-cooled engine has been retuned slightly, for better low- and midrange power, with different fuel mapping and exhaust. That said, the motor still pumps out a respectable claimed 118bhp (nearer 108bhp at the wheel) at just over 9000rpm. There’s strong, usable, thudding V-twin power from 3000rpm onwards with a slight emissions lull at 6000rpm before it takes off again all the way to the peak at 9250rpm. With a narrower vee angle than the classic 90° twin, the motor spins up quickly giving it a more perky feel to the way it revs. It’s smooth too, but as with any large capacity V-twin engine, let the revs drop too low around town and it’ll shake the chain and judder but keeping the chain well lubed and correctly adjusted will minimise this. Originally delivered in restricted form for the running-in period, the majority of bikes will have had the restrictor plate removed from the airbox and the wire snipped on the ECU to release full power. Handling: The Falco is nimble at low to medium speeds but as road speed increases a bit of effort is needed to hustle the bike from side to side during fast direction changes. While this is no track refugee, the bike is accurate, sure-footed and most at home flowing through fast, sweeping
bends, something that suits the slightly stretched riding position. The double twin-spar frame combined with excellent Showa front forks (again stolen from the RSV and adjustable for spring preload and compression and rebound damping) give the bike an excellent ride. The only fly in the ointment is the basic Sachs rear shock (only adjustable for spring preload and rebound damping), which isn’t up to the rest of the package (there are plenty of aftermarket options available). Ride: The riding position is classic Italian V-twin with a fair stretch, certainly compared to a Japanese inline four, to the wide set clip-ons. A decent screen keeps the worst of the wind and weather off, while the footpegs aren’t set too high, giving a pretty comfortable cruising stance for motorway distances, which doesn’t compromise control for the twisty bits. The clutch action is quite heavy but the gearbox itself is good. Some bikes suffer from difficulty finding neutral at a standstill but this can often be eased with the fitting of an alternative clutch oil jet. Braking performance is excellent and taken care of by Brembo four-piston calipers biting on 320mm floating discs. Equipment: The clock binnacle isn’t the prettiest but it is comprehensive with a clock, low fuel light, voltage readout, lap timer and the ability to swap from mph to kph for those taking advantage of the bike’s long-legged nature. Aftermarket modifications are common with owners, from easy-to-fit noisy exhausts, airbox modifications and bellypans through to RSV swingarms, Öhlins suspension, big bore kits and fuel injection changes. Finish: Excellent. The beefy alloy frame and other aluminium is well anodised and the stainless exhaust shows Aprilia’s intent on the quality front. Aprilias built during this period have superior corrosion resistance to their Japanese and Italian peers. Many owners liken the finish to that of Honda at its best.

Model history: Introduced in late 1999, the Falco ran superficially unchanged until production ceased in 2004. Sales continued into 2005. 2001 saw a clutch modification and in 2003 the forks were changed from Showa to Marzocchi. What to check: The front discs can warp, so check for any pulsing at the lever. A malfunctioning speedo will require a new pickup/sensor and the sidestand switch has been known to fail when a plastic pin shears. A poor battery or a low charge will cause the clocks to reset to kph when the voltage dips too low when starting. Clutch slip above 5000rpm is often caused by using an incorrect specification oil. Three overall pros: Sporty Italian V-twin, great build quality/finish, exceptional value for money. Three overall cons: Heavy clutch, documented minor niggles, long stretch to the bars. Value for money: Buy a clean machine with an aftermarket rear shock and sporty exhausts already fitted (make sure you get the original silencers for MoT time). Servicing/maintenance: Minor services including oil/filter are every 4687 miles (7500km or every eight months) and a major service with valve clearances are every 9375 miles (15,000km or 16 months). Insurance: Lexham Insurance quote the following on a 2003 Aprilia SL1000 Falco: 25-year-old in Derby (Riding for three years, three years no claims) TPF&T: £496.42 (£550 excess) Fully comprehensive: £821.62 (£550 excess) 42-year-old in London (three points for speeding), riding 15 years, nine years no claims TPF&T: £148.28 (£500 excess) Comp: £254.17 (£500 excess)

30 FIRST RIDE Suzuki Burgman 650 ABS Executive / Yamaha X-MAX 400
Maxi-mum sense Practical, agile, fast and you don’t have to bother with gears in traffic: welcome to maxi scooter world Words: Iggy Grainger / Harriet Ridley Photography: Jason Critchell, Milagro
Since its launch in 2002, more than 83,000 Burgmans have been exported from Japan… although not many of those have found their way to the UK. Sadly our nation is missing out on what the Europeans love: one of the most useful classes ever to grace our roads, the maxi scooter rocks. The Burgman uses a 638cc, fuel injected, twin cylinder liquid-cooled dohc engine, it produces 54bhp and around 46lb-ft of torque. That engine runs an SECVT system, or Suzuki Electronically Controlled Continuously Variable Transmission, which gives riders the chance to operate the scooter in three different modes using toggles on the left bar. You can swap between two fully automatic modes (Drive and Power) – Power mode lets the scooter hold on to the revs for longer and increases engine braking, while drive is slightly more relaxed, gives better fuel economy and isn’t as harsh in town. The thing with the Burgman auto system is that rather than giving linear power at a twist of the wrist, you actually feel like the scooter is changing down a gear when you give it a handful. This results in a more rewarding riding experience and gives the engine a bit of character. If you can’t cope with the thought of never changing gear again you do have the option to flick it into manual mode, which allows you to go up and down the six-speed box at the flick of a button, albeit without a clutch.
What’s new?
The 2013 Burgman has a reduced silhouette and uses more black plastics
to give the impression that it’s smaller. It also has a larger headlight, new tail-light and LED front running lights to help give it an instant presence on the road. There’s also an improved screen, a colour coded glovebox, black wheels and an upswept silencer. Practical improvements mean the handbrake has been moved to the lefthand side next to your leg and there’s also a new access panel to make topping up the coolant easier. You’re also getting the luxury features Burgman owners have been used to for years, like independently heated front and rear seats, heated grips (although we had a problem with these on the launch), an electrically adjustable screen and mirrors that fold in at the flick of a switch (great for filtering). There’s 50 litres of storage space under the seat, which is roomy enough for two full-face helmets. There’s also a 5.2 litre lockable glovebox and a couple of 1.3 litre cubbyholes, one of which has a 12v socket buried deep inside. Although the engine hasn’t increased in power, (not that it really needs to), it has been fettled to increase fuel efficiency by a claimed 15%, achieved by changing the ECM and ignition timing, while the piston rings and valve springs have also been improved to reduce tension force. The transmission has been refined to make it smoother in traffic, the exhaust has also been replaced, has a reduced pipe size and more efficient catalytic converter, and finally the clutch has been improved to reduce clutch drag by 35%. The instruments are also new: they now have two stylish analogue clocks (speedo/tacho) and a central digital dash with all the useful info you’d expect, including an ‘Eco’ light which illuminates when you’re riding in an eco friendly fashion, plus ambient temp, ice warning, two trips, MPG, time, fuel etc. The floorboards retain the sculptured rear cut-out, which means even the
www.motorcyclemonthly.co.uk
Busy looking switchgear shortest riders can put their feet flat to the floor very easily, a great attribute which makes a huge difference with a heavy machine. This Burgman weighs in at 277kg, which sounds a lot on paper, but in reality it carries it very well. The chassis has also been altered to save weight by removing the rear subframe and its steel bracket and making the seat rail 25mm narrower. The pillion footboards have also been moved 10mm higher to make them easier to reach and increase passenger comfort.
What’s it like to ride?
The Burgman surprises you from the moment you swing a leg over it. The weight of the scooter quickly becomes irrelevant, as its low seat height and scooped out rear footboards means you can paddle it around easily. Obviously you still need to think where you’re parking it so that you’re not trying to turn it around uphill when you get back on it, but once you’re moving it glides along effortlessly. The engine produces plenty of power – in drive mode the power is progressive but give it a handful and it accelerates very quickly. It’s a wolf in sheep’s clothing and can hustle around the twisties with the best of them as we found out on our 220-mile
FIRST RIDE Suzuki Burgman 650 ABS Executive / Yamaha X-MAX 400 31
www.motorcyclemonthly.co.uk test ride around the Scottish Highlands. It was pretty wet up there but the Burgman’s excellent weather protection and electric screen meant the weather wasn’t a problem. The 650 has Bridgestone Battlax tyres fitted as standard and they gave me confidence in the wet, just as well because we weren’t hanging around! Obviously the maxi-scoot has ABS (it’s a refined system on the new scooter and weighs 55% less than the old one), and I did feel the familiar pulsing through the lever on a few occasions during the day, which wasn’t surprising really. The brakes are fantastic (new floating discs on the 2013 model) and give plenty of bite when you need it; they’re not linked either which is a good point as far as I’m concerned. To be honest, the Burgman feels like a sports scooter when you’re on it, as it’ll change direction very quickly, it’s agile, handles fantastically well and the engine is superb. You can expect to see a top speed of around 110mph and it gets there quite quickly too. Most of my ride was spent in Power mode and the mpg figure dropped from 49 down to 42 by the end of the day. Ride at a more sedate
pace in Drive and that could easily be into the 50s, but when you’re having this much fun saving fuel doesn’t really figure into the equation. Power mode is great when you’re blasting through the countryside; you want the extra engine braking to help you when you roll off the throttle but in traffic it’s better to flick it into Drive. I had a bit of a play with manual but it’s not really of much benefit unless you want to hold a gear as long as possible when you’re in a hurry, or if you simply want to feel like you’re in control. In reality most owners will just use the two auto modes, which give a much more relaxed riding experience. The 2013 Burgman is a fantastic maxiscoot and it does everything a premium class, or executive scooter should do. I had one of the best day’s riding I’ve ever had – the stunning scenery and perfect roads helped immensely but it wouldn’t have been half as special without such a well sorted, and yes, exciting, scooter beneath me. £8799 may seem like a lot of money to pay for ‘just a scooter’ but they are just so usable. Forget any misguided illusions you may ever have had about scooters: just get out there and try one.

Agile, fast and enjoyable: the new Burgman is one sporty scooter
LOOKS PRACTICALITY PERFORMANCE VALUE OVERALL
Yamaha X-MAX 400
Riding hard down the winding ribbons of Tarmac, swooping in and out of corners, hard on the anchors then back on the gas, wind in my hair and a grin on my face. I’m on a Yamaha launch in sunny Italy, but not on its latest superbike. Instead, I’m sampling the local roads on its brand new scooter: the 400cc version of the X-MAX 250 that’s been kicking about for a few years now. Hopefully that hasn’t got you turning the page, because if you haven’t considered a maxi scooter for your commute yet, then you may be missing out: there’s no better way to get around. A big scooter is agile, fast and you don’t have to bother with gears in traffic: just sit comfortably, twist and go. It’ll save your precious motorcycle from wear and tear, and it’s cheaper than public transport… Okay, so this new X-MAX costs £5399. But these are sophisticated
machines, and it’s still much cheaper than Yamaha’s best-selling maxiscooter, the £8699 TMAX 530. There’s a considerable difference between these two bikes: The TMAX has a twin-cylinder engine and a chassis and transmission that owe more to a motorcycle than scooter design, with the engine mounted forward on the frame. Meanwhile the X-MAX has a single-cylinder engine and an entirely conventional scooter transmission, which means the engine, swingarm and rear wheel are one single, solid assembly. The X-MAX 400 is in fact a cross between a small and a maxi scooter: it’s light and compact for busy city centres, but fast and protective on motorways. And it’s fun to ride.
What’s new?
The X-MAX 400 is a big step up in performance from the 250. ❱
32 FIRST RIDE Suzuki Burgman 650 ABS Executive / Yamaha X-MAX 400 Yamaha took an improved version of the Majesty 400’s engine and stuck it into the 250’s frame to give the bike its compact dimensions. The frame is upgraded to make it more rigid and lighter, but not bigger. Overall the X-MAX 400 isn’t much heavier than the 250 either: 211kg wet compared to the 250’s 180kg. Despite the compact size it still has the street presence of a maxi-scooter, and the finish and attention to detail are outstanding, from the smart stitching in the saddle to the logos engraved in the fairing. The design is aggressive yet upmarket. It has twin headlights with LED sidelights, and twin LED tail-lights. Look at it head on and you could mistake it for a motorcycle, and the tail unit would be just as sleek if it were not for the airbox and transmission spilling out from either side into big solid blobs – an inevitable trait of the conventional scooter system. But it does allow for vast underseat storage, the holy grail of scooters. Yes, the X-MAX 400’s storage is impressive. It’s even bigger than the 250’s, and twice as big as the TMAX’s.
A scooter is about practicality, which includes plonking helmets, clothing or weekly food shops under the seat. And there’s space for two full-faced helmets under this one, with two glove compartments at the front – one lockable. And if you opt for the topbox you could carry the kitchen sink!
What’s it like to ride?
Despite its plentiful storage, the 400 still has the benefits of a scooter half its size in Milan’s traffic, where every driver appears to be nattering on the phone. It’s light and nimble, scything its way through gaps. The upright riding position and lack of gears make filtering relaxed, with a good turning circle for easy U-turns. In the stop-start city conditions the engine is punchy and fast, a winner at the traffic light GPs, and smooth at low throttle openings
as you creep through traffic. But it’s on the faster roads that it comes alive. The twisties surrounding Lake Como prove there’s more to riding a scooter than getting about in the most practical way possible. It’s fun too. You can take the X-MAX by the scruff of the neck and swing it through the hairpins and faster turns thanks to the agile handling and swift engine. Just make sure you give overtakes enough time: although the torque-laden engine builds speed quickly, you can’t kick it down the gears for a rapid take off as you would a motorcycle – you have to wait for the engine to catch up with the throttle after you whack it open. On the motorway I tuck under the screen with the throttle to the stop, squeezing just over 100mph from the speedo, although I suspect it’s more like 90-95mph allowing for optimistic readings. But you could easily reach the ton by fitting the Akrapovic silencer available as a Yamaha option. It not only looks a thousand times better than the bulky original exhaust, it also sounds meaty and the difference in performance is staggering. My small size means I’m good at tucking into a bike for optimum aerodynamics to maximise top speeds. Yet despite my best racing crouch and a pinned throttle, two test X-MAX 400s fitted with Akrapovic silencers breeze past. I hop on one later and it feels like a derestricted machine. See, you can pimp a scooter too! I’d also get the optional extra touring screen. The standard screen is not quite tall enough and creates turbulence; I’d forgotten my earplugs and it’s tinnitus city until I crouch under the screen and the world goes quiet. But overall weather protection is excellent, the front fairing shielding
www.motorcyclemonthly.co.uk
the legs with sticky-out pieces on either side of the top fairing to help shield hands. I must add the X-MAX felt a little unstable at full throttle, weaving slightly in the head wind. But a scooter will never have motorcycle stability (unless it’s a TMAX!). On the plus side the engine is smooth at all speeds with zero vibrations, keeping mirrors clear and adding to the already extreme comfort. I haven’t mentioned brakes yet… these are made up of twin hydraulic discs at the front and a single disc at the rear, with plenty of progressive bite. But there’s no ABS, a safety feature commuters have come to expect. Yamaha is working on an improved ABS system to be fitted to a version of the X-MAX 400 out at the end of 2013. But you’ll have to lobby Yamaha UK to bring it over as it reckons the extra cost (500 euros on the continent) will put UK riders off. Yamaha won’t quote on mpg as it says it depends on the riding. Fair enough. We rode hard on day two starting out with a full 14-litre tank, ending the 150-mile trip with a gauge showing one bar of petrol. That’s a mpg of around 50, which would be improved by a calmer commute. Which might save your licence too… So how about giving big scooters a chance? Try one for a commute or two and you’ll never want to give it back.

MCM reader Norman Grimley had this to say about the British Superbike School:
“
“
To be in with a chance of winning one of these prizes, simply answer the following question correctly:
I really wanted to improve my riding – the course was excellent. Kevin and Stuart (instructors) were very good. A very enjoyable day in good company.
About the British Superbike School Mike Abbott, head of the school, explains: “The intention in starting the British Superbike School was to provide the best professional motorcycle coaches for road riders in the best setting in which to master bike control away from road hazards. We introduce the physics of how motorcycles stop, turn and accelerate, so riders can understand how bikes react to rider inputs, to improve rider technique and skills and help develop that vital confidence. “The basic problem on track days is the sheer number of riders on the track (sometimes 40 or more) of varying abilities. This makes working on your riding very difficult, as you’d be lucky to get many clear laps during the day, when the secret is finding a good consistent pace on which to build. “The BSBS has tried to get the best balance between cost and the number of riders, and runs with just nine riders with three coaches, which gives riders all the space and time they need. All training takes place on the new Blyton Park test track in Lincolnshire, which is ideal for bikes, technical but without the hazards associated with the old circuits. “The school is composed of well-known riders and experienced local coaches including Paul ‘Marra’ Brown, short track champion Pete Boast, Geoff Baldock (a former ‘King of Cadwell’), 120mph TT rider Dave Hewson, as well as track experienced police, and DSA qualified motorcycle trainers.” For more information visit www.britishsuperbikeschool.co.uk
The three lucky winners will be drawn from all correct entries received by the closing date specified. Full terms and conditions can also be found on the MCM website. No cash alternatives. Competition is only open to UK residents and prizes can only be redeemed against 2013 school training dates – July 19, August 30 or October 4, 2013. Prize is based on you using your own bike – hire bikes are available at an extra cost to yourself, which is not included in the competition.
