Clinging to the bright red tank of Enfield’s lovely new Continental GT cafe racer (see p16), blatting through London – not a bad way to round off your first week in a new job. Hello. I’m John. As you’ll find out over the coming months, I get pretty excited about most things, but more than anything I get very excited about bikes. From the Sym Jet scooter I used to run around town, through the rattly old Honda Dominator, a rebuilt Honda CBR600, Yamaha Fazer 1000 or the Ducati Monster S4 that I regret selling with all my heart, they were all great because they’re bikes! The new Enfield makes less than 30bhp, but it has so much personality you just can’t help but grin. Shortly after riding it I bumped into Jon, the proud owner of a brand new Continental GT. He’d bought it from Haywards Motorcycles in Cambridge after a ride on their demo bike: “I absolutely love it – the way the factory has captured the original GT’s lines, but wrapped it all up in a modern package. I’m looking forward to scratching around my local back roads… big smiles all round with this one!” And that’s the point of bikes… having fun, whether you’re commuting, touring, exploring or simply out for a Sunday blast. Regardless of what you ride, where you ride, or how you ride, here at MCM we want to share the excitement we all feel for a life on two-wheels, which is why we want more of YOUR opinion in the paper. Ethanol in fuel: what you need to know now There’s a lot of concern right now about the quality of our bikes’ lifeblood, but how does it really affect your machine? John Milbank’s beginner’s guide to chemistry gives you the facts…
You put petrol in your bike and it burns it – that’s all you need to know, right? In an ideal world, yes, but as our sister magazine Classic Motorcycle Mechanics recently reported, the 5% ethanol content of fuels could be causing all kinds of problems. Basically, ethanol is a renewable fuel made from corn with a very high Research Octane Number (RON) that’s popular in some US racing classes. Because it’s renewable, governments around the world are bringing in legislation that it should be mixed with our petrol. Sounds great, but besides being suspected of causing blood cancer, it’s also highly corrosive. Ethanol is the stuff that gets you drunk. It reacts with oxygen to produce acetic acid, and unlike most of the chemicals in your fuel, it’s also hygroscopic, which means it loves to absorb water. If left, it can become saturated with water, which then starts to corrode your fuel system (including that nice big steel fuel tank). It gets worse the older your bike is: it’s vicious stuff when it comes to glass fibre tanks (it eats the lining), it nibbles away at aluminium, and it perishes rubber pipes, diaphragms and O-rings. Currently, while not all fuel suppliers are happy to give out the ingredients of their products, most of their juices are now at the 5% mixture. We were due to see E10 (a 10% ethanol mix) on the forecourts alongside regular fuels by now, but the government has asked

We know that vehicles can be designed to run on the new fuel, and BMW issued this statement back in 2007: “BMW Motorrad has no objection to the use of Spark Ignition (SI) engine fuels containing up to a maximum of 10% ethanol, and imposes no warranty restrictions.” So while some manufacturers are ready, the average bikers like us with older machines may have to think carefully. We spoke to Mark Brewin at BSD Performance (bsd.uk.com) – one of the UK’s top tuning and race development
companies – to get his opinion: “You can’t sugar coat this: it’s a nightmare. I work on 30-35 GSX-R1000 engines every year, but the ones that come from the USA, where their fuel is really nasty, have valves caked in crap when I take them out. At the moment, the 5% ethanol content over here is bearable, but only if you take precautions. “It’s not such an issue with the sealed fuel-injection systems of modern bikes, but once you get back to carburettors, you’ve got to be careful. If your bike’s got carbs then you don’t want it laid up for more than a month. I had an older Fireblade in recently, and had to throw the carbs out, they were that gummed-
up and corroded. Even injected bikes suffer – I’ve got one in today that’s been left for about a year and just won’t start. “Besides the corrosive problems of ethanol, your bike will often run lean (which means it’s not getting enough fuel in the air/fuel mixture squirted into the cylinders). A lean bike can, at best, run a little roughly, or not feel like it has as much go as it used to. At worst, it can melt. It’s not always a problem, but some bikes run quite lean out of the factory to meet emissions laws, so a leaner fuel can be more of an issue. It’s also worth being extra vigilant on tuned bikes. So, with Mark’s expert advice, here
are the five things you should do to keep your bike running sweet: 1. Stick to the best fuels. Mark’s experience with stripping hundreds of motors every year is that the better the fuel, the less the damage. You’ll also get better economy from the 97 RON ‘Super’ unleadeds, but only after you’ve got used to them, and stopped giving it such a handful. 2. Use Silkolene Pro FST. If you do need to store your bike, Mark’s found that this additive can help. It’s also great for curing carb icing, as MCM’s editor found out with his old Honda Dominator. 3. Drain it. Older bikes with carbs can be fairly easily drained of fuel, so empty the tank and run the bike until it’s dry. You can also spray a very fine oil mist into the tank to help keep the oxides off. 4. Check it. Keep a close eye on your fuel pipes, and regularly check they’re secure (Mark’s had Ducatis in with pipes falling off ). How does your bike feel? If it’s not performing like it used to, get it checked by an expert. A session on a dyno isn’t just for those looking for more power – it’s also a great way to get the very best out of the fuel mixture. 5. Ride it! If you ever needed a good excuse to get out on your bike, this is it. Keeping the fuel moving through the system will prevent it getting a chance to saturate with water and gum up the injectors or needles.

IT WOULD be easy to pigeonhole KTM’s incredible new Super Duke 1290 as a hooligan’s dream. With streetfighter styling, a 1301cc V2 engine, and boasts of ‘wheelies in third and fourth when you push it’, it’s perhaps not the first choice for a long weekend with the partner. Dig a little deeper however, and it seems the Austrian manufacturer has acknowledged that not everyone will be backing the new street bike into corners like a crazed supermotard. A claimed 180bhp in a 189kg bike
should be kept under control with an advanced, lean-angle aware traction control system. Radial brakes provide impressive stopping power, but they’re tamed by a combined ABS developed with Bosch. KTM boast that its new slipper clutch reduces rear wheel chatter under heavy braking, but the hydraulic unit is also apparently light enough for single finger use, making long journeys through traffic more enjoyable. KTM also assures us that, while the footpegs put the rider in a ‘focused’ riding position, it’s one that
won’t exhaust after hours of cruising. The bike’s supposedly designed for ‘people who can’t stop having fun’, and the optional sat nav bracket, stainless steel exhaust system and streamlined luggage certainly suggest a bike that could be almost as comfortable screaming around an exotic foreign racetrack as it is taking a couple on a great ride over there. The Super Duke’s far from being a sports-tourer, but we’ll find out more when we ride it in next month’s issue, free from your local dealer, club or biker’s cafe.

The first bike with an iPhone dashboard THE Electric Mobility Company has announced the launch of the Xkuty One, the first fully iPhone integrated electric bike. Thanks to the Xkuty app, available free from the Apple App Store, your iPhone becomes the control panel of the two-wheeled machine and allows you to set the top speed, power curve, select various acceleration styles and even adjust the battery consumption. Not only can you control the 46kg bike while you’re on it, it will even detect if your Xkuty has fallen over, and call a number of your choice – cue panicking mums as they get an automated call! Carlos Felipe, CEO of The Electric Mobility Company says: “Xkuty was born from our belief that we need to change the way we travel. Adventure gain as BMW cranks up the power
BMW has now added the excellent liquid-cooled engine from the R 1200 GS to its popular Adventure model. Compared to the GS, the Adventure gains an additional 20mm of spring travel, and a modified trailing arm which gives the bike 10mm more ground clearance than the previous Adventure. Switchable ABS and traction control now feature, with road and rain modes, as well as the option to tune the bike’s handling for more offroad use.
BMW C EVOLUTION’S SET TO ENTER PRODUCTION The Frankfurt Motor Show in Germany saw BMW take the wraps off its latest two-wheel offering, the electric BMW C Evolution scooter which produces a peak of 47hp. Its liquid-cooled electric motor is electrically limited to a top speed of 75mph. There are four modes to choose from depending on your requirements: road, eco pro, sail and dynamic. Information will be provided to the rider on the large colour display, which shows current battery status, speed, average consumption and the remaining range in kilometres (taking into account the selected ride mode). Suzuki’s MotoGP engineers have been busy developing the completely new traction control system, with five sensors around the bike claimed to give optimum traction with a variety of settings to choose from. The ABS system has been combined with new radially mounted brake calipers to control the power delivery. Suzuki boasts of 59mpg and a range of 259 miles from the 20 litre fuel tank. Weight has dropped from the new V-Strom too, in at 228kg – a whole 8kg lighter than the original. It won’t be short on accessories either with a whole host of items expected to be announced shortly, including a three-piece luggage set. Yamaha has announced the addition of the FJR1300AE, a long-distance tourer which sits between the existing 1300A and AS in the range. An Ariel 345cc Quadricycle will return to exactly the same spot from which it was sold 112 years ago as it looks to change hands again... but this time the price tag could be more than £35,000 rather than 1901’s £110 asking price. Auction house, Bonhams, one of the world’s oldest and largest auctioneers of fine art, and antiques is known for selling many high profile and high cost items. And the firm’s HQ on New Bond Street will sell the Quadricycle for the second time in 112 years on November 1. The 2.75bhp Quadricycle has had just three previous owners, the first being Cpt A Loftus Bryan of Borrmount Manor from 1900-1967.
Ariel Motorcycles was established in 1870 and based in Birmingham. It was classed as one of the leading innovators in British Motorcycling and was sold to BSA in 1944... but the Ariel name survived up until 1970. Ariel built the Quadricycle as a tricycle, offering an optional attachment in the form of a small open carriage, which was either supplied with the tricycle at the time of purchase or as an optional extra after purchase.

Ahem, which is to say that I’ve worn it for several months now and come to appreciate its versatility; it doesn’t look out of place if I am doing a track day in a one piece leather suit or if I’m testing a scooter in jeans and a textile jacket. It’s comfortable too – other helmets often dig in and leave me with an attractive red mark straight across my forehead whereas this one fits like a glove. This is the first in the Japanese company’s range to feature an integrated sunvisor which offers 99% UV protection. Often with these ‘integrated’ items, they’re a pain to try and open/close/move with your gloves on – not this one. It can be used effectively without taking your hands out of your gloves, therefore eliminating the need to pull over and disturb your ride. The padding can be removed and washed easily from the helmet and there are even special little ear pads to help reduce pesky wind noise.You know the annoying draft you tend to get up your chin when riding? There’s
a handy, and amusingly named ‘chin curtain’ which help stops that draft... I also find it good to tuck my neckerchief into, to prevent gaps. The GT fastens with a double D-ring for the ultimate secure fit, but unlike many other lids, it’s got an emergency quick release system – should the worst happen and you have an accident, once the strap is released or cut, the cheek pads are quickly and easily removed with the lid in place, letting the helmet slide easily off the head. So, we’ve established the features of the helmet are great and will protect your head, but I personally also think this helmet just looks awesome. I chose the Wanderer TC-5 scheme, which is matt black with some seriously cool looking shimmery light changing painted design on the sides, but there are tons of designs to choose from including red, yellow and other patterned choices. The R&D boys have been busy and the shell has been specially designed to be aerodynamic with the vents in strategic places for maximum airflow, rather than looking naff, they look part of the design as well as being practical.

I got these boots just in time for my first trip out to the States on a cruiser launch and was pleasantly surprised at just how sturdily they cupped my ankle. Until you actually try them on, you can’t appreciate how well supported these boots are, all the way up to the top. They also proved really comfortable and looked smart, paired up with my bike jeans. A thousand miles on, and my second trip to America, I got caught out in the most unreal storm I’ve ever known. These boots claim to be waterproof, but the soles were like swimming pools after the downpours we experienced that day. On arrival at my hotel, I wrung
out my socks and removed the sole liner with ease. The boots dried overnight and I was good to go again the next day. Since then I’ve put them through a number of showery conditions and remained bone dry, so I can only put their leaking down to the severity of the weather. Overall, I really rate these boots and would recommend them to others without any hesitation.

HAVE YOUR SAY It’s all about the accessories
I fully concur with the F650GS fans reported in your October issue. This is a good motorcycle, which suitably ‘modded up’ makes an excellent middleweight tourer; my wife does not ride so there is more than enough power for my purposes. In this instance, BMW has made a basic motorcycle, leaving you, the customer to adapt to your taste. Your tester’s criticisms are easily rectified i.e. fitting a ‘memory foam’ insert to the seat, ‘grippy soft foam’ handlebar grips, coupled with 20mm handlebar risers enable me to ride all day without the proverbial ‘numb bum’! Mirror extenders solve the mirror issue and as for braking, I fitted a set of EBC type pads which have improved the situation markedly without going to the expense of twin discs. As I am the second owner, it came with a BMW supplied large screen which enables me to cruise at the French limits without undue strain, job done. And yes, the accessory makers did make a bob or two out of me but I don’t see me changing this bike for anything else in the middleweight category. In reply to the letter from James Fenton in the October issue regarding his idiot workmates who take the p**s out of his protective kit: I would say – James – man up! You can never have too much protection. What would they say to the Moto GP riders in their £3k air bag full leather suits, £500 gloves, £1k helmets? Tell them to find an old Routemaster bus, stand on the back platform at even just 30mph and then dive on the road. When you’ve scrubbed the road grit from their elbows, hips, arse, knees and palms with a scrubbing brush and lots of Dettol you can then visit them while their skin graft from their thigh heals.

I would also say you should get some more protection. What about a back or a rib protector or a neck brace? I wear Forcefield for the back and rib and am just about to purchase a Leatt neck brace. I get nervous in the summer when I wear Kevlar lined jeans instead of my leather pants. I wear the brightest Day-Glo bib I can. Let them call me a ‘pussy’ if they want. I don’t care about their opinion. Every day we deal with idiots wrapped up in steel who don’t give a toss about bikes. We need every bit of protection we can get because they can’t drive. ‘Necessary’ technology?
I started reading your most excellent newspaper last year when I took out a subscription. I’m constantly amazed at how much expectation the modern biker seems to have for technology to be fitted to bikes and how much whinging goes on if the bike doesn’t have it as a standard fit. When I passed my test in 1978 the most advanced gadget on a bike was an electric starter and when Suzuki introduced the gear indicator it got slagged rotten because it was seen to be insinuating that bikers were so stupid they couldn’t count to six. A prime example is on page 48, your reviewer is complaining because a 125, yes a 125, doesn’t have an MPG counter, time or fuel indicator, or again is it just because I’m an old fart? ★ MCM STAR LETTER OF THE MONTH Goldilocks and the three bikes
Having ridden motorcycles in my teenage years, I had a short spell of 45 years on four wheels instead of two. Following retirement, gaining access to Motorcycle Monthly and four seasons of Sons of Anarchy, I was prompted into straddling another bike. I decided on a Suzuki DR 400. It had a great riding position for a tall man with slightly achy knees, and not too much power (the bike, not the man). I enjoyed the bike for a little over a year but on a run along the M23 coming back from Brighton I decided that I would like a few more horses under the tank, as a trials bike at 70mph tends to vibrate. It was time to upgrade. I approached the dealer once again and he agreed to take back the Susi in part exchange for a Triumph Daytona, a beast of a machine. With drop down bars and rear set pegs I was ready to race anyone at the lights. Unfortunately ‘the beast’ was untameable, well, in my hands at any rate. The thought of 0 to 60 before I could draw a breath and a top speed in excess of 160mph, made my heart fill with trepidation every time the Daytona roared into life. I must admit that I became rather afraid to use it, which meant it spent too much time in the garage. Time for a change. So, not unlike the Goldilocks story, I had tried a DR 400, too slow for a longer journey; 995i, this made my knees not only ache but tremble. There was nothing for it but to find ‘porridge’ that was just right. I decided on a Yamaha XV 1100, aka a Virago. A cruiser with plenty of
‘grunt’ – a word I had learnt from a write-up. It had decent speed, reliability and a very comfortable riding position. So here I am, upright once again and not having to compete at the lights with young Ninja riders. I now have my eye on turning it into a bobber and have had the numberplate repositioned to the side. My sights are also set on short rear mudguard and single seat. I plan to spray it in metallic green too and then that’s it; no more fussing and changing my mind. Except that, hmm, will I regret changing it from a standard bike to a bobber? Will that devalue my lovely Virago? Should I be more of a man and go for black? Is it me or do other riders face similar dilemmas? Ah, well, the sun’s out today so I will just mount up, forget my problems and ride off into the sunset. John Botley What a journey. www.motorcyclemonthly.co.uk The traditional sports-tourer class is supposed to be in decline, as increasing numbers of riders decide that versatility in a motorbike doesn’t mean just sports and touring, but crossing rivers and trekking up mountain trails too. Presumably nobody told Kawasaki, whose Z1000SX has been a big hit since its launch three years ago, despite showing absolutely no inclination to get mud on its Bridgestone boots. The SX is an old school sportstourer, created fairly simply by adding a fairing to the naked Z1000. Despite that it worked very well and sold even better. That success has encouraged Kawasaki to give it a comprehensive update for 2014, incorporating modified engine and suspension, new front brake and a host of other details.
Tell me about the engine
Updates to the 16-valve powerplant are really just tweaks to give it a little more refinement and throttle response. The 1043cc lump’s camshafts are revised with a view to boosting performance at lower revs, and the intake trumpets are redesigned so they’re all the same length. There’s a 4bhp claimed boost at the top end too, to a peak of 140bhp at 10,000rpm. That might not be open-class supersports horsepower, but the SX has more than enough poke for serious speed, along with a generous helping of torque throughout the range. Top speed is around 150mph, and it heads towards it mighty rapidly, staying smooth apart from a tingly patch at about 7000rpm. It revs eagerly to the 11,000rpm redline, changes sweetly through its six-speed box (which has slightly shorter first five ratios, and taller top), and makes a more involving howl thanks to an airbox that has been redesigned for that reason.

This is a KTRC system based on that of the ZZR1400, and on dry, mostly grippy Austrian roads on the launch it was impressively unobtrusive, while adding a welcome level of security.
What’s the chassis like?
Beneath the SX’s familiar swoopy bodywork there’s no change to the twin-spar aluminium frame or swingarm. But suspension and brakes are modified, the forks being slightly firmed-up with damping mods and the rear getting a stiffer shock spring with a hydraulic preload adjuster situated just below the seat on the right, and accessible on the move if you don’t mind riding one-handed.

www.motorcyclemonthly.co.uk The changes give a slightly tauter, sportier feel that was great on the twisty launch route, especially as Kawasaki’s mechanics had firmed the bike up very slightly from standard settings. It still felt a tad soft when riding harder, especially under braking, but a couple of extra clicks of fork damping and shock preload firmed it up nicely, at the expense of a slightly less plush ride later on. There was no sign of the slight high-speed instability, possibly related to panniers, that some testers mentioned about the old model.
At 230kg wet the SX is heavier than a super-sports bike but it felt light and manoeuvrable enough to be great fun on the twisty launch route. And its uprated front stopper is brilliant, the Tokico monoblocs giving enough power for eyeball-loosening stops with just one finger, aided by the very impressive ABS system. Bridgestone’s S20s gripped well, there was plenty of ground clearance, and the SX was so much fun that I didn’t once wish I was riding something sportier and less comfortable.
Should I buy one?
If you’re looking for a good compromise between sports bike and tourer, at a competitive price, then why not? After all, 1800 people bought the old model in the last three years, making it Kawasaki UK’s best selling bike each year, and this model is significantly if not dramatically better in quite a few areas. It’s also good value, with the base model SX’s price likely to increase by only £100 to £9299. Many riders will spend more than that, not just on the (highly

These are more stylish and substantially narrower than their predecessors, and each is big enough to hold a full-face helmet. As before, they’re likely to be available as part of an upmarket Z1000SX Touring model, adding about £500 to the price.
So what’s it like to ride?
Fast, entertaining and more comfortable than a sports bike. Clipons above the top yoke give a reasonably upright and roomy riding position, and there’s useful wind protection from the unchanged screen, which adjusts through three positions via a simple press-button system. But hands don’t get much protection, which won’t be great in winter even if you do fit accessory heated grips. The SX will cruise effortlessly at three-figure speeds, although it’ll only do so for about 150 miles before needing a top-up, as fuel capacity is unchanged at a less than generous 19 litres, and consumption dips below 40mpg if you’re riding briskly. Kawasaki says the fuel gauge is more accurate. The digital instrument panel now has an eco riding light to tell you when you’re riding efficiently, plus fuel consumption info that can be toggled from the mode button on the left clip-on. Both rider and pillion should be happy to get through several tanks of gas. The seat is slightly thicker and should be more comfortable. It felt okay on the launch but I’d need to ride further to be sure. The pillion also gets a revised seat area and unchanged grab-handles. The SX isn’t luxurious but it’s significantly more practical and comfortable than most sports bikes — and still a lot of fun to ride.

Should I buy one?
It depends what kind of rider you are. If you’re speed obsessed then probably not, but this bike isn’t just for riders looking for a bit of nostalgia. Sure, the silhouette of this bike is pure 1960s GT, but Royal Enfield wants this to be the bike that helps make the company the global leader in the mid-size motorcycle market. Sounds ambitious?

In 2012 Eicher motors recorded sales of over £816 million. Production for this year will be 175,000 motorcycles, with 250,000 planned for 2014. Bear in mind that there’s a six-seven month waiting list for Royal Enfields in India, and the company’s hopes for global domination start to look a little more plausible. Enfield knew it couldn’t just rehash an old design if it wanted to be taken seriously, especially in the European and American markets, so it’s thrown a lot of investment at this bike. With the quality parts used throughout, and the incredibly smooth and deep paintwork, all the signs are that this is
a bike built to last. With the little niggles of the fuelling it’s not 100% perfect, but the Enfield still manages to combine all the style and inspiring ride quality from what many consider the golden-age of biking; with much of the build-quality and performance offered by the latest technology.

So what’s it like to ride?
It’s a lot of fun. Some may mock the low power output, but when a bike handles this well (and especially when you’re with riders on similar spec machines), it’s impossible not to have a big grin on your face. There’s something to be said for riding a bike flat-out without too much fear of losing your licence. The limiting factor of most of today’s sports bikes is the rider… on the Continental GT it’s the power output, and that’s exactly what Royal Enfield intended. The chassis could easily handle more power, and in the great old Brit-bike tradition it’s more than likely that we’ll start seeing owners shoehorning other people’s motors into the Enfield. Tri-Fields for example, a mixture of Triumph engine and Enfield chassis, were popular in the 1960s. For the rest of us there’s enough here whether you’ve just turned 19 and have an A2 licence, or you simply love the fact that this bike turns more heads than anything I’ve ridden before. But the new era of cafe racer is different. A generation of riders, tired of sportbike excess or adventure bike Gore-Tex, have sought to get their kicks by customising old bikes. It’s not just about cafe racers, it’s street trackers, bobbers and Brat Style*. It’s about style and individualism. It’s about recycling. And for the younger set, it’s about biking cool on a budget. It’s Seventies and early Eighties Japanese bikes as well as old Brits. Unlikely bikes like CB250/350 Hondas, CX500s, XS750 triples, GS750s, airhead Beemers are revered by this new customising cognoscenti – as much as Gold Stars and Bonnies were back in the first coming of the cafe. For those who have discovered the cult, it’s no longer about how much horsepower your bike might have, or how fast you lapped Brands on a trackday. It’s about having fun on the back roads. And it’s about style. In an otherwise dull motorcycle industry, there’s this one niche that’s finally offering an alternative way into bikes. While Royal Enfield’s Continental GT might be a production cafe racer, it fits the bill perfectly. And for those with imagination, it presents a really good base model for personalisation.

speedo waved its way to 90mph. Not the 100mph the ton-up boys were looking for in the 60s as they raced between cafes, but good enough to leave the city behind and head for an ice cream on the promenade with a grin on their faces. I got to talk to Roger Boss in Brighton, and away from the crowds of journalists and PR reps, he shared some fantastic stories from his
days with Royal Enfield. I asked him how he felt about the bike that he’d been so involved with, being made in Asia: “I can honestly say that if I didn’t know it was made in India. I’d never have realised. It’s wonderful.” So, is it a fitting tribute to the inspirational bike of the 60s? Roger certainly thinks so, and having had one of my best rides ever, I’ve got to agree.

What’s the chassis like?
It may be mild steel, as opposed to the light alloy of many other bikes, but it’s one of the best chassis Harley has ever produced. The 49mm forks (up from 46mm last year) with improved internals, lighter aluminium cast wheels and sealed headstock bearings come together in a front end that really talks to you now. A new ‘Reflex’ ABS system takes the form of electronically linked brakes that work surprisingly well on such a heavy bike. Get to 25mph and the combined braking comes into play. Grab a handful of front brake and the front end dives slightly, before just the right amount of rear brake is applied automatically, levelling the
bike out as it stops. If you prefer to stamp on the rear, the system will prevent it locking up, and automatically applies pressure to the front. It works well, and isn’t too intrusive, though it can feel a little odd in tight slow corners when your speed drops below 25mph once you’ve got used to it being there.
Should I buy one?
Bikes like this are in many riders’ dream garage, but at the price of a decent family car, it’s not a decision to be taken lightly. Some people just don’t understand the Harley-Davidson mindset – owning one of these bikes is far more than taking possession of a new piece of metal: it’s about buying
into the brand; the ideals of taking life at a more leisurely and styled-to-bedifferent pace. It’s also about surrounding yourself with luxury, and the Ultra Limited does this brilliantly. Many of the new features of the Project Rushmore bikes address comfort, from the new touch screen equipped with audio, phone and sat nav system to the carefully redesigned passenger seat, it’s obvious that the American company has listened to its customers to improve the touring experience. And it’s succeeded. Couples looking for some long distance adventures will love this bike, but the best way to find out if it’s for you is to book a test ride at one of the many Harley dealers.

So what’s it like to ride?
It’s really quite amazing how different this bike is. Compared to the 2013 model – it’s more focussed, without becoming bland. Gone also is the harsh buffeting often associated with a screen made to suit all sizes: a vent below the screen diverts airflow through to the underside of the screen, which helps lift oncoming air to create a calm and still place to sit, even at high speeds. H-D has subtly moved the luggage system backwards, giving passengers more room, yet still managed to eke out more storage – 4% in the topbox alone. The locking topbox and panniers also have a one-touch latch with built-in lock that’s easy to open with one hand – a vast improvement over the old system that often led to broken finger nails and much cursing. With my iPhone tucked away in the waterproof ‘Jukebox’ compartment, it’s linked via USB to the 25W audio system and produces crisp, clear tunes even at high speed thanks to the 5.25in speakers. I had trouble with this at first though, with the sound being randomly muted, but as these were the first launch bikes, and the system is upgradable, this should be sorted by the time the bikes are on the market. If you’re riding in the dark, the Daymaker LED headlights and foglights give a crisp, clean, white beam, and the rider’s view is also

THERE are plenty of motorcycle sheds on the market, but only a handful that really look up to the job. Wood might be warm and prettier to look at, but it’s not as secure and anything that involves a felt roof is bound to be a maintenance nightmare. Asgard is a Bradford-based company that makes high quality, steel sheds and garages in all kinds of sizes. I’ve got a couple of mates who have an Asgard unit and so I’ve seen the quality first hand. The Motorcycle-Plus unit looked perfect for me – big enough (5ft wide x 10ft 9in deep x 6ft 7in tall) for two bikes, counts as a garage for insurance purposes (and is a darn sight more secure than most up-and-over garage doors), but needs no planning permission. At £1199, it’s a lot cheaper than building a garage too. Built from heavy grade, galvanised steel, with thick double doors, a robust lock (accredited by the UK Locksmiths’ Association) and wood-
panelled steel floor, the unit bolts to your concrete base and has vents in the top and side to prevent condensation and allow heat and vapours to escape. The unit arrives in a little over 20 pieces, with instructions and enough screws/bolts to make even Jules Verne happy. If you are handy with a screwdriver, have plenty of time and some suitably expensive power tools you can put it together yourself. My mate James and another mate of his took a day to build his and only had about 25 screws left over at the end. If you’re like me and know your DIY limits, the best option is to get Asgard to assemble it on site. Meet Stewart and Simon. They build about a dozen Asgard garages every week. For £185 (which includes the delivery cost of the unit) they will come and assemble yours. As well as being nice blokes, they are punctual, friendly and unbelievably efficient. My garage was up and ready to use in less than
two hours. “When you build as many of these as we do, it looks easy,” Stewart tells me. “And, in truth, it is, as long as you understand the instructions and have the right tools. The common mistakes are not sealing the gaps between the panels properly, meaning they leak, and not getting the doors levelled and operating smoothly before fixing the unit down.” Job done and I’m left with a very professional looking, well put together unit with a shelf at the back, hooks inside for clothing or luggage and enough room for two large capacity motorcycles. I’d anticipated this feature being at least twice as long as I described the intricacies of shed construction. But they made it look easy. Oh, and there’s a 10 year warranty on all metal sheds and garages.

There’s more to the International Dirt Bike show than motocross and trials bikes. Editor John Milbank hopes he’ll see you at Stoneleigh Park, so you can find out for yourself… IT DOESN’T matter what bike you’ve got – from an R1200GS to an RS250 – there’s something for everyone at Europe’s largest (and the UK’s only) off-road motorcycle show. I’ve owned all kinds of bikes: sports bikes; street bikes and winter hacks. One of the best bikes I owned though, for sheer grin factor, was a Honda CRM250. This two-stroke single made just 40bhp, but was an absolute hoot on my local green lanes. It had nothing to do with Can Cans, Nac Nacs, or any other freestyle motocross trick – it was all about a new adventure, seeing parts
of the country you could never get close to by road. You certainly don’t need to be an outand-out off-road enthusiast to get the best from the Dirt Bike Show at Stoneleigh Park. Many of today’s top road racers, and indeed leisure road riders, cut their biking teeth on a minicrosser or trials bike (check out Jon Pearson’s views on the next page), and past attendees at the show have included big names from all racing disciplines. It’s also a great chance for youngsters to have a go at biking – nearly all the bike manufacturers offer

off-road Jon Pearson takes a look at the reasons why you should visit the 2013 International Dirt Bike Show... and how riding off-road can help your everyday riding skills
www.motorcyclemonthly.co.uk You might be wondering what riding off-road and the International Dirt Bike Show has to do with you. MCM is for all types of riders on all sorts of bikes but most of you reading this ride a road bike, right? Quite right too, but while I’m biased, I think you’re missing a trick by not trying a bit of off-road. I grew up riding bikes from a very early age, and spent half my waking life on them. The balance tips towards off-road but the truth is I’ve spent my time riding all types of bikes, in all types of situations and all with just as much enjoyment. I began with the off-road sport of trials, which as a discipline is all about the basic skills of throttle control, clutch control and balance. I progressed from winning my class as a schoolboy club rider to winning local club championships and kept moving up – with the support of my dad – to challenge for centre championships, national and international events. I’m listing these things not to boast but to make the point that riding off-road, specifically trials, was a fantastic foundation for learning the bike skills
needed to jump on any bike, be confident and have fun. And that’s the key point about off-road in my view, it should, above all, be fun. From the time I was in my mid-20s right up to present I’ve been happily enjoying two-wheels, competing at wildly different bike sports. Being confident enough to simply get on a bike, any bike (be that Valentino Rossi’s Yamaha M1 at Valencia, touring a Honda Pan European through the Alps, fizzing a 50cc scooter through London or taming a fire-breathing hill climber up the side of a mountain in Montana) boils down to those basics I learnt riding trials bikes as a boy. Age might make me think for a second or two longer before I let the clutch out these days (I’m fast approaching 40)... but never for long. I’ve spent many years analysing and explaining how off-road riding has helped my road riding, but ultimately it’s down to the basics. An old friend of mine (who’s ridden off-road all his life too, and is still going strong well into his 60s) often says: “Before you can learn to ride fast off-

www.motorcyclemonthly.co.uk road you’ve got to be able to ride slow.” When you can ride a bike slowly, completing tight turns, feet up, without stalling or wobbling over, then you’ve got the basics of motorcycle control nailed. This is the basis for riding anything with two wheels. Grabbing yourself a bit of dirt-bike riding time is the best way I can think of to improve your overall bike control. To be perfectly frank I’ve never seen it as graphically as I when I’m instructing at the BMW Off-Road Skills course in Wales. Week-in, week-out I’m instructing men and women, often with little or no experience at all of riding on dirt. There’s a great pleasure in helping and watching their learning curve and bike control skills balloon in just a few short hours. Often the most rewarding weekends are with absolute beginners who have little experience of riding any bike, let alone off-road. I’m not here to sell Simon Pavey’s courses for him (OFS can do that for itself!) but there’s little doubt, and I see it time and time again, that learning these skills has huge benefit to your

Start them young on an electric bike! everyday riding confidence. Skills you simply don’t get enough opportunity to practise on your basic training or bike test, which is precisely why I think you should visit the Dirt Bike Show: to get a feel for what goes on... and more importantly to understand that just because these bikes look a bit different, and some of the off-road fashions are a tad bonkers, it shouldn’t put you off. There are plenty of ways into off-road and the International Dirt Bike Show is a great place to start. One fantastic reason to visit is to take your kids along. Aside from marvelling at Steve Colley doing wheelies on a bike with no front wheel, or getting a signed poster from world motocross superstar Jeffrey Herlings, they should check out, sit on and persuade mum and dad that an electric bike is the best possible Christmas present they could buy. Though don’t blame me if they do just that. Electric trials bikes are a fairly recent, but growing phenomenon, and
thankfully bringing new families into off-roading. The beauty of the electric bikes on the market is that they come in a range to suit your (kid’s) size and age. Apart from the twist grip throttle (which can be adjusted for power output as your child gains confidence), the bikes are a lot like riding a normal push-bike (and importantly make the same lack of noise). Clubs for kids are growing in popularity across the UK – one I know of in South Wales has, in its first year of operation, quickly grown in club members and already outstripped its collection of hire bikes. It was only a little dent

I was filtering through traffic on my BMW GS1200. I had my metal panniers on so it’s pretty wide. As I went past a beaten-up old Ford Escort, the driver moved to the right by about a foot, clipped my nearside pannier and nearly knocked me off. We pulled up at a bus stop, where the driver went bonkers. He said I smacked into him and demanded I gave him my name and address. I told him to do one and rode off. I wasn’t bothered as my pannier was looking fine and there was only a little dent in his door of his already battered motor. The police have now sent me a notice of prosecution for failing to stop, and failing to report an accident. This can’t be right can it? It was his fault and there was only a little dent. No court will convict me will they?

I wish I could give you different advice but alas Mr Escort driver was entitled to ask for your details. While it was only a little dent the law is clear: If there is any damage or personal injury following a road traffic accident and someone asks you for your details you have to give them. If you don’t and ride off and it is reported, then you can expect to be summonsed to court. If you’re convicted both the offence of failing to stop and failing to report an accident carry a sentence of 5-10 points; or possibly disqualification; or possibly 26 weeks in prison for really serious cases. All of that is in addition to a fine and court costs.
Can my wife claim against me?

I was out riding with my other half on the back of my Bandit 1200 when I cocked up a corner, ended up in the gutter and bounced off through a hedge. Not my finest hour. I walked away with a bruised ego but my wife ended up breaking her wrist and her leg. She’s a carer, but is now off work.

I’ve also had to take time off work. I feel unbelievably guilty, and have a feeling that because we’re married she can’t claim against me. Is that right? And if she can claim can she include an amount for the care I’ve provided, along with my lost earnings?

As the accident was your fault your wife can claim against you, and your insurer will have to pay out. Being married does not preclude her from this. However, she cannot bring what is known as a subrogated claim for your own losses. The rationale is that you cocking up the corner means in the eyes of the law you are negligent. Therefore, you cannot benefit from that by your insurer effectively paying you. As an aside, on the guilt front, try not to beat yourself up. We have all made mistakes and that is from a man who nearly fell off on the mountain pass of the TT course riding his old crusty GSX1400 around a bend on the completely wrong line at 110mph. Wobbly.

Before I knew it, it was the end of the day and time to set off home. My mind was filled with the excitement of the day as I tried to choose my highlight – was it riding out on my favourite circuit with Foggy? Was it picking up tips from other riders, watching with wonder how it’s meant to be done? Or was it simply getting out on track for the first time? I couldn’t decide. All I did know was that I bonded with the CB500F – it took me home feeling like a champ, with a smile that lasted several days. Now when’s the next track day?!
It always helps to get some guidance on your first track day, and I was lucky enough to meet Mark ‘Finchy’ Fincham – a former Royal Marine Commando turned motorcycle racer currently competing at club level on his ZX10R and hoping to take on British superstock next year. Despite having had one leg amputated, Finchy refuses to be held back – all that’s different on his bike is the thumb-operated shifter. He was happy to watch my lines for a few laps and then took the lead to show me areas I could improve upon, giving me feedback after the ride. It was incredibly helpful having someone who knew the track – and knew how to race – to show me around. If you meet someone willing to give you some friendly advice on a track day – grab it with both hands!

Seven days earlier I’d never ridden a bike on the road – no CBT, no scooter, nothing. Yet here I was after just one week of training, about to embark on the test which would change my motorcycling life...

D-Day: The day I’d been training for all week... the day I’d hopefully become legal to ride a bike on the road. Curtains open... and it was the worst weather of the week with fog, super strong winds and sideways rain. Not good! I headed over to the training centre where Derek, my instructor and RoSPA Gold rider, already had the Module 1 (off-road) circuit set out in both directions (we wouldn’t be told which way we’d be doing the swerve until we entered the test centre). Both fellow learner Tim and I passed with flying colours. The smile on Derek’s face said it all. A 35 minute ride and we found ourselves at a water-logged test centre. To our surprise the test centre was staying open and running. Derek said before we left that there may be a chance tests were delayed or even cancelled until the weather was better, but despite the poor visibility I was soon riding through the gates of the Mod 1 testing ground to take my position in the marked-out parking bay. A quick talk through the circuit laid out (right-handed, with a right-handed swerve) and I was off to the bike ready to start Mod 1. This was it. If I cocked this up, I could kiss Mod 2 and my licence goodbye until I got another opportunity to take it. I walked the bike from one parking
Speed gun checks emergency stop. bay to another; easy job, but the bike wasn’t even running at this point. To mess it up here would take a very unprepared rider. Leg over and it was time to attack the slalom and figure-ofeight. Go! Oh sh*t! The wind instantly took the bike and felt like it was pulling me across the entire testing ground (realistically it was about half a metre). I recovered and headed straight into the slalom, but that had definitely been unexpected. The key in the slalom is to not look at the cone you’re about to go around, but two cones ahead. It’s about planning and I found myself missing the cones by inches yet not worrying. Controlling speed with the clutch and rear brake I’m pulling a nice figure-of-eight. The trick is there’s no requirement as to how tight you have to pull this manoeuvre. Simply put, I was staying nice and wide, making sure I was looking at where I was going, constantly keeping the next cone in sight. Slalom and figure-of-eight nailed, it was time for the turn in the road. Two white lines imitate curbs on either side of an average sized road. Again, the tip is to look at where you are going, not at the piece of Tarmac in contact with the front wheel. Once completed, I was

www.motorcyclemonthly.co.uk told to make my way around the righthanded corner and accelerate to the desired 50kph to complete a controlled stop – super easy as there was a ton of space between the braking point and the cones where I was expected to stop. Next manoeuvre – emergency stop. Reluctantly I made my way again around the right-hander to line up through the speed trap, this time staring straight at the examiner’s hand. As soon as it was raised, it was back brake, front brake, squeeze-squeezesqueeze, foot down. Derek really had polished my riding skills here. Wet Tarmac and sideways rain were some of the worst conditions I could have done this in, yet I stopped a long way before the cones. But I was not in the clear yet... because now it’s time for the dreaded swerve test. Strong gusts of wind and this rain is really getting my heart going, but I have no choice but to attack. Riding around I took a good look at where the cones were in relation to the speed trap and for the last time, made my way around the
right-handed circuit. Straightening out, I gave it a good squirt of gas until I heard the unmistakable drone that had been programmed into my head of the correct rpm. Angle through the speed trap and a good push on the bars to get that last bit of direction change before a bit of rear brake, squeeze of the front brake lever, leg out and stop. Take a deep breath, and relax. It’s a pass!
Module 2: On the road
I’d done Mod 1 with no minors. I was overjoyed, despite being freezing cold and sopping wet down my neck. But the best was yet to come – Module 2. A quick break and thaw-out and it was time to head out on the second part of the test. My examiner was calm and relaxed and reassured me that everything would be okay and any problems to just tap my helmet. We set off from the test centre and headed out on to the road. In all honesty, I was pretty relaxed. Traffic was calm (for Swansea) and steady with the weather being so bad. Instantly we headed off the ring

road and into a cul-de-sac where I was challenged with an angled hill start. Indicator, life saver and we were off. No dramas at all – in fact, I recognised the area. All those tasks of riding around the back of beyond with Derek had paid off. We headed back out on to the ring road and up to a rather large roundabout, which had four lanes into it. A pretty complex layout, I was asked to turn right. It’s all about these life savers and indicators. I reminded myself to not rush and slow it down. Never rush into a hazard. My examiner then got me to head out into the sticks on the back roads where there were some blind crests and corners and some pretty gruelling junctions. There was a tractor ahead so I planned my overtake in plenty of time, knowing the road ahead and positioning the bike to the right-hand side of the road. Again, it was indicate, life saver and go. A bit of ‘woohoo’ as Derek would say and I was past it in seconds. The little BMW is a torquey little motor and chugged its way to 60 in no time. We turned left and headed into a built-up area. Traffic was pretty busy, with kids from the schools on their lunch break. My eyes were constantly scanning for any of them to run out or kick a ball and so on. Luckily nothing like that happened. The weather was getting pretty bad and we headed back out on to the ring road. I could sense we’d done around 40 minutes of riding and I was confident I’d done nothing incorrect or missed a life saver – that would have been game over. Up ahead was a contraflow and we ground to a halt. Around 20 minutes later I was in the exact same spot on the Tarmac. You can never plan a test and this one was out of the ordinary as they usually only last around 45 minutes. We slowly but surely made progress to

I got off the bike, gloves and helmet off, and watched my examiner do the same: “It’s good news,” he said (before the words rolled out of his mouth I was jumping up and down in my head, but playing it cool on the outside), “you’ve passed”. I had two minors in all; one for staying a tad too long in the right-hand lane of a dual carriageway despite there being nothing behind; and the second for a slight hesitation at a junction. I couldn’t be happier, especially with the weather conditions. Derek and Tim both congratulated me and we waited for Tim to do his test too. For Tim it was an unfortunate fail, due to missing one of the dreaded life saver checks. But he booked straight back in for his Mod 2. The crazy thought is that
as soon as I get home I can get on my bike and head out on the open road unsupervised and with the necessary skills to ride safely and smoothly. I can’t stress the importance in learning with people who have lifelong riding skills. BMW really does know what it’s doing when it comes to instructing and I can’t thank the guys enough for the skills I’ve been given for life. All the fear and anxiety was for nothing. In reality, if you’re thinking of taking your test, don’t delay. The law has changed and it’s only going to get more difficult. Once the test is passed, you have that licence for life and can use it as and when you like. If you can ride a bicycle, you can ride a motorbike. If you want your freedom on two wheels – get your test booked now!

Yamaha YZF R125

Styled just like the Yamaha R6, the YZF R125 offers credible big bike looks and handling for learners or commuters alike
It was a long time coming. Yamaha’s last saucy 125 was the 1990s TZR125, a machine which was lusted after by the then learners who’ll now be in their forties. I know, I was one of them. It took until 2008 for Yamaha to make a racy road-oriented 125 which would be lusted after by another generation of teenagers desperate for a slice of performance biking. Honda’s four-stroke CBR125R sold in droves for several years unchallenged and must have been partly to thank for Yamaha to want in on the sales... and come up with this beauty. Designed, developed and produced in Italy, the R125 is aimed at the European market and the more European sized rider – which is good news for us Brits. The seat height is even higher than Yamaha’s own middleweight R6, so bear that in mind if you’re not overly well endowed in the leg department. Just like the two-stroke TZR125s of the 90s, the baby YZF has an enthusiastic following of performance-minded learners, not to mention a healthy aftermarket supply of cosmetic and power enhancing add-ons. Engine: The engine in the R125 is manufactured by Minarelli and has earned a reputation for being a strong little unit – even with the majority being thrashed by performance seeking first timers. Performance from the 15bhp motor up to 55-60mph is more than respectable. Keep the revs above 6000rpm and it’s very sprightly, but ridden in this way fuel economy isn’t brilliant, dipping to 60mpg. With a less manic riding style the R125 will typically return 80 or so mpg (Honda’s CBR125R will return over 100mpg without trouble but only produces 13bhp – every extra pony counts at this level). Taken in context, the engine performance is very good and is one of the best 125s out there from a thrills perspective. Of course, you’ll still need to keep on top of the gearbox to keep the engine on song – see, not all things have changed from the days of the two-stroke Yamaha TZR125. However, gone are the days of chucking a set of Boyesen reeds into an oil burner’s reed block and fitting a noisy pipe; the R125’s engine is fuel injected, which needs additional equipment to adjust. And just like in the early days of the 125cc learner law, big bore kits are available for more power (for those who’ve passed their test obviously). Both 150cc and 182cc big bore kits are available, and provide a noticeable increase in power. The 182cc Malossi kit requires a different exhaust and a Dynojet Power Commander to get the fuelling right.
Handling: While the R125 may ‘only’ have a steel chassis, the Deltabox main frame and aluminium swingarm do a cracking job, giving the bike class-leading handling – this is quite possibly the best handling 125 on the market. Despite a lack of adjustability in both the forks and the rear shock (which it doesn’t really need anyway) the bike is a joy through the bends, giving the feeling of being on an extremely light sports bike (which it is). The only time you remember you’re on a 125 is when winding the throttle open or going for an overtake.
Ride: The R125 experience is one of capability. This is a bike which doesn’t look like a 125 and doesn’t ride like a 125. Yamaha got the damping just right, to give a sporty ride which doesn’t rattle your fillings over bumps and potholes. It handles better than Honda’s CBR125, and feels far more like a ‘big’ bike. In fact, the R125 has similar proportions to its bigger brother, the YZF-R6, and it’s a welcome change to have a learner machine sized for normal riders. If you want a bike which takes you away from the feeling of being on a moped or learner machine, this is the one. The limited steering lock can make life interesting when doing a U-turn on a narrow road, so you might want to practise before taking your test on it. Some owners try to squeeze a 110 front and 140 rear tyre onto the R125’s rims, but this isn’t a recommended fitment and may adversely affect the handling. This front tyre size will also rub on the front mudguard. Equipment: The dash sports a digital display which includes speed, fuel level and distance on reserve as well as the normal trip meter. There’s no kick-start – this is electric start only. The OE Michelin Pilot Sporty tyres draw criticism for grip, especially in the wet. Many owners swear by the Pirelli Sport Demon or Bridgestone BT45 – although they reportedly don’t last for as many miles as the Michelins. The mirrors are vibey and have a habit of coming loose. There’s a huge list of mods which owners carry out, from LED valve caps through a tail tidy to big bore kits, Power Commanders and exhausts. The most common mods are a tail tidy and noisier exhausts. Finish: Top notch. That’s not something you might expect from a learner market 125 but the YZF will fly through multiple winters, and with a generous cleaning regime a 2008 model should still be in sparkling condition. If not, it’s a sign of little maintenance on behalf of the seller/previous owner. Of course, as with any faired
machine it’s worth looking under the fairing to see what’s what. A bike which has never had the fairing off could well be a festering corrosion pit under the shiny panels.

Expect nuts and bolts under the fairing to be seized, so go for the best looked-after machine you can find. The engine can take the abuse of being at maximum revs everywhere, as long as it’s been fully serviced. Check for the stamps in the book. The chain and sprockets don’t have a reputation for a long life so check for hooked teeth on the rear sprocket and if you can pull the chain away from the sprocket at the three o’clock position they’ll need replacing. Three overall pros: Adult-sized, handling, finish. Three overall cons: Price, non-adjustable suspension, not the best MPG. Value for money: Buy a two- to three-year-old model with any of the extras (exhaust, tail tidy etc.) you want already fitted, it’ll save you hundreds. Servicing/maintenance: Dealer servicing is every 3500 miles with oil changes every 1800 miles (oil filter every 3500 miles). The owner’s manual describes the oil change in detail so owners are expected to do this interim 1800 mile change between dealer services. The 1800 miles equates to roughly every seven tanks of fuel, so the cost could soon rack up if you take it to a dealer for this additional oil change. The good news is it takes less than a litre of oil. “I wash it with warm, soapy water after every ride. I also carry a damp cloth in my pocket, wrapped tightly in a plastic bag so that it stays damp, which I use to clean my visor when I am out and about.” Rachel Nicholson, Helensburgh

“To remove dried bugs, I wet some kitchen towel or a tea towel (if the wife is not about) and then lay it over my lid for 10 minutes while I do something else... when you come back you will be pleasantly surprised that all the bugs have now been softened and wipe off very easily with no annoying scratching! This works on bugs on the front of your bike fairing too. Otherwise, just plain water and a micro fibre cloth – no chemicals here please!” Lee Crahart, Bishops Waltham, Hants “To keep my visor clean I always carry a pocket-sized pack of baby wipes in my jacket. If they are soft and gentle enough for a baby’s bum, they won’t damage my visor and they bring flies and traffic film off easily without scratching – perfect.” Steve Ascough, South Kirkby, West Yorkshire
“A little bit of white vinegar on a lint cloth. It removes all the road grease and the lint avoids scratching the visor.” Ian Pinner, Alicante “Pre ride it’s washed with warm water and baby shampoo – then polished with a silicone spray. On the bike I have a home-made sponge holder – the sponge is glued into the lid, the base acts as the reservoir for a solution of auto windscreen fluid. This works surprisingly well and, with care, you can even do it on the move.” Tony Griffiths, Buxton, Derbyshire
“I never put my riding gear away without giving my visor a good clean and then applying some Hein Gericke ‘Rainfree’, but check that whatever you use is suitable for use on polycarbonate and other visor material. Doing this lays down a layer that will bead those misty water droplets into much bigger rivulets that just slide away leaving your vision clear. I also always carry, and swear by, Visorvision’s V2 sponge. This is invaluable for the summer bugs, or if you’ve been following one of those pesky sand and gravel quarry trucks on a wet day. Finally, I carry one of Bob Heath’s ‘Vee-Wipes’. They come in three sizes, fit over one of your glove fingers and you use them like a little windscreen wiper – dead handy and dead cheap. The V2 and the Vee-Wipe take up no room at all and I wouldn’t ride any real distance without them. Safe (and clear) riding.” Phil Robson, Ottery St Mary
“Wipe down with warm tap water on a lint free cloth immediately after riding. If possible and about once every couple of months, I remove my visor and wash with warm water and washing up liquid. Then I re-treat it with Defog-it.” Craig Zendal, West Malling, Kent We asked Mark Roberts from Arai’s Race Support, what he does: “Whether it’s my own lid, or Suzuka 8 Hours Endurance Race winner Noriyuki Haga’s, I simply use clean water and a microfibre cloth. I’ve heard people say they use glass cleaner, but this is a BIG no-no, as it will damage the polycarbonate. It’s important to replace a visor with any scratches, as it makes riding at night dangerous. If I’m cleaning the inside of a lid, I use baby shampoo and water – Arai helmets have a removable lining, which makes life a lot easier. If yours doesn’t, then you can wash it in the shower, but you must always let it air dry naturally!”
