KAWASAKI’S FUTURE PLANS:
The electric sportbike with a swappable ‘engine’
7
What do you think to this Kawasaki BATTERY ZX that hinges the ‘engine’ unit out of the left side of the machine in one unit? Words by: Leon Rose The jaw-dropping idea, outlined in official factory patent drawings recently filed, shows how the entire power unit can be opened up from the bike itself and replaced with a fully-charged unit, or have maintenance carried out as needed. The drawings show crucial parts of the design in order to make this work. Based on a ZX-10R chassis, it is clear to see that everything will stem from this hinge design (Pic 1). That hinge is figured in most of the drawings for this new motorcycle and you can clearly see how the frame will hinge around this point. The hinge element is number 82 (52,53) on the drawing (top left shoulder of the bike) which shows how the whole left hand side of the frame will open up and allow the entire motor to exit the motorcycle without the need for tricky loading or unloading from the frame (Pic 2). From the top-view drawing (Pic 3) it’s clear that the overall dimensions of the bike will remain the same. It is also clear that the electric lump in the middle, which will carry a stack of batteries, is a self-contained unit feeding into the gearbox and conventional chain drive. The next picture in the run of patents (Pic 4) describes the allimportant, very strong, battery tray. This sits at the bottom of the item numbered 32 in the side-on image of the full bike and carries most of the pivotal weight of the battery unit as it swings out of the engine area. Another drawing shows the frame in isolation (Pic 5) with the hinge system clearly visible – this is the upper noted 52(53). There is a clear, strengthened shoulder to the frame with an outer brace of tubing just to the right of the hinge, and another below the hinge, in order to support the weight of the battery packs. The lower noted 52(53) and 54 shows how the frame is attached to the outer lower part of the bottom of the frame – this is to allow the entire frame to hinge out and back into place where it is secured again before the bike can be ridden. Those outer braces are also described in the following image (Pic 6), which is the front of the frame shown facing out of the page, the part of the frame’s shoulders (and the frame) which moves is on the right hand side of the image – items 67,8,66

and 51 point to the moving part of the frame. The image to the right is the completed section sited in position with the battery component elements hinged out (Pic 7) of the bike and on to a stand that sits alongside the bike. This means that the bike will effectively park next to the stand and the battery compartment would be hinged out for replacement with a full-charged unit, seriously cutting down – or possibly even negating – the need for time spent waiting for the bike to be recharged at all. Like filling up a motorcycle now with petrol, this could lead to a series of alreadycharged battery stores in special ‘charging stations’ where a rider can just pull up and within a couple of minutes have a new, fully-charged power unit fitted into their bike. Another image shows this but from the front perspective (Pic 8) and without any connecting leads in place. This image is used to show proportion of the battery engine unit in comparison to the overall motorcycle – what’s important to notice here is that with the motor out of the bike there is nothing engine or chassis-wise visible on the right hand of side of the motorcycle from the front. What is also intriguing in the above drawing is element 91 which is an extension of the frame’s base which holds the batteries out of the bike. The extension is there to effectively catch and support the bike’s front wheel – like a moving chock block that is ready
2

5 to catch the front wheel initially and once the new battery is in the bike and the rider is back on the bike it will slide back into the base to allow the bike to be ridden away – if the system is used outside and the bike needs to be in the right position for an automatic engine-battery-swap.
What that could mean is that we’re looking at the fuel-pump-for-the future here, where you ride into the chock and leave the bike upright as a machine automatically swaps the battery unit for a fully charged one.

Ducati’s 2016 Monster 1200R: Most powerful Monster ever!
This is the most powerful and most refined Monster Ducati has ever made – and the 1200R has been confirmed as the biggest naked bike to be part of the Italian firm’s line-up for next year.
It’s a heady mix of 1299 Panigale parts, Monster S bits and a heap of carbon fibre goodies dressed with a new frame, wheels and heavilyworked motor. The bike uses a motor based on the 1198cc liquid-cooled V-twin Testastretta 11 engine from the Monster 1200S. This newest version kicks out 160bhp at 9250rpm and 97lb-ft of torque at 7750rpm. This latest version of the lump gets new
pistons, higher compression ratio, new inlet manifold, larger diameter exhaust, new silencers and new elliptical throttle bodies (up from 53mm to 56mm). It’s not just the motor that’s come in for a barrage of work though. The chassis has also been thoroughly worked over and gets better ground clearance, a new tail with removable ‘hump’ in the unit so that a pillion can be carried, new steel subframe,
NEWS 9 steering damper and new Ohlins rear shock and 48mm Ohlins forks. The wheels are the same as on the Panigale 1299 and run with the same 200 section Pirelli Supercorsa SP rubber. Ducati has clearly made the bike for a more performance-led client base and that shows in the huge Brembo M50 four-piston brake calipers equipped with Bosch 9MP cornering ABS. The front discs are 330mm in diameter.
DID YOU KNOW?
The Monster range of bikes got its name from a range of small Italian rubber monster toys for children Like other bikes in the range the Monster 1200R gets three riding modes: Sport, Touring and Urban plus the Ducati Safety Pack which means that the bike will have eightway adjustable Traction Control. The Monster 1200R also gets a TFT fullcolour dash. The Monster 1200R is Euro4 compliant which has seen a raft of new design elements needed to be included in the bike including a stronger frame, footrests and even concerns elements like bodywork design.

12 HARLEY-DAVIDSON LAUNCH
The new prince of darkness Harley has updated its range of custom machines for 2016, led by the budgetconscious new Street 750…
Words by: John Milbank Pictures by: Harley-Davidson
The Dark Custom range was launched in the US back in 2008, but it’s the key to what Harley-Davidson is calling its rebirth during a two-day launch in Barcelona. “Don’t think black,” we were told in the presentation, “think blank”. Dark Custom is a canvas for owners to create something that’s truly theirs. Custom builders around the world have huge experience with the platform, though it’s also possible for a customer to take their idea to their Harley-Davidson dealership and ask them to build – or assist with – their dream bike. Harley-Davidson is of course still very much growing – 83% of Sportster purchasers are new to the brand – but like the rest of the industry, the company understands that a younger audience is vital. In Europe, the Middle East and Asia (EMEA), 21% of all Iron 883 sales are already to the 18-30 age group. The Street 750 has the potential to grow that significantly; it’s a budget-priced machine that retains much of the Harley look and feel, but is crying out to be personalised. Whether it’s as simple as ‘sticker-bombing’ the tank, or modifying and replacing, repainting and refining, it seems unlikely that many will be rolling through cities with the same look as when they left the factory.
Tell me about the engine
The 749cc Revolution X motor is entirely new. It’s also the only one in the H-D range – besides the V-Rod – to be fully water-cooled (the Project Rushmore engines found in bikes like the Road Glide Ultra are watercooled at the head only). It doesn’t have the lazy throb that is Harley’s
signature, but it’s still distinctive and characterful, with enough of that American pulse from the 60° Vee to not feel out of place within the company’s line-up. It also doesn’t shake at a standstill, and of course it doesn’t throw out all the heat of an air-cooled motor – great in town. What’s most noticeable is how eager it is to spin up, and that’s really clear on the road. Despite – on paper at least – being down on the Iron and Forty-Eight’s peak torque,
it feels by far the most snappy and usable motor, both in the city and on twisting country roads. On the motorway at around 60mph in top, it out-dragged the Iron, and the larger capacity of the Forty-Eight took a few seconds to catch up with the eager little 750. The six-speed gearbox is much quieter and smoother than on other Harleys – it’s still pretty positive (more so on the up-changes), though some of us noticed the occasional slight difficulty finding neutral.
What’s the chassis like?
The 37mm non-adjustable forks and preload-adjustable twin rear shocks are ‘tuned for the rough pavement’. Two-pot floating calipers front and rear bite 300mm single disks, but there’s no ABS – not even as an option. This seems likely to be a way of keeping the cost competitive, and it’s certainly not an option that felt like it was needed during the test ride. By 2017 it will be there, but it’s no real reason to wait. Harley says the Street is designed for use in traffic, with a ‘tight wheelbase’ of 1535mm. This is actually a fraction longer than H-D’s Iron, at 1515mm, but it is shorter than Kawasaki Vulcan S, at 1575mm.
Should I buy one?
All black and looking very H-D, the Street 750 is much more than entry-level.
This is a budget machine, but it’s been designed to be easy to ride, accessible, and fun. The target audience is ‘young urban adults’, and the company is keen to stress that the Street has all the H-D styling, but is intended to be more affordable. The 750 still has belt drive, a Milwaukee steel tank, and a 3D chrome badge (though it’s not as solid feeling as the on the Forty-Eight). Liquid cooling makes for an engine that feels more like other bikes, and keeps it cooler in congested traffic. I don’t like to pigeon-hole a motorcycle, but this really is a great machine for new riders. It’s very unlikely that it’ll be bought by current owners of Harleys, but those new to the brand could also be tempted. Some of the parts do look cheaper than other machines in the Harley

range – the shocks certainly don’t look as great as those on the 2016 Iron and Forty-Eight, and the top yoke and switchgear doesn’t have that high-quality look. There are only two trips and an odometer on the dash – a rev counter would have been nice, particularly with this more eager engine. The swingarm is a simple box-section design, but this is a bike that costs little more than a non-ABS MT-07 – one of this year’s bargain benchmarks. It’s even available on PCP for a £999 deposit, then just £79 per month. That switchgear is a standard layout, which is more likely to appeal to riders new to the brand, as well as those who may have just taken their lessons on another bike. It’s not got the keyless ignition of the rest of the company’s range, though you do get
a locking fuel cap, which is often an optional extra. There is also a fair bit of plastic on the bike, but it’d be easy to remove, and again – this is all about the potential of customisation. Still not sure? It’s easy to get a test ride on a Harley, and during September and October, anyone booking a test will get the chance to win a trip to the US to build their own custom bike, working with Dais Nagao – H-D’s senior industrial designer.
So what’s it like to ride?
We were all surprised by the Street 750; it’s an eager bike, incredibly easy to ride in the city, and fun out on the twisty roads. It is a cruiser, so the rubber-covered pegs do touch down if you start trying to hustle things – a couple of journos also scraped the side-stand bracket on the left, and the
Single-instrument dial dash looks classy and elegant.
HARLEY-DAVIDSON LAUNCH 15 exhaust heat shield on the right. There are no hero blobs, so it’s not as obvious when you touch the rubber sleeve down – I’d have preferred to have the metal pegs that give you that extra warning (and are easy to replace). The budget suspension works fine, and appears to have been well considered. You don’t need to adjust it as it’s not going to be pushed beyond its limits on a track day, or raced across the mountain at the Isle of Man. The brakes are equally practical for most riding, though of course if you compare them to the latest radial monoblocs of many bikes, then you’ll be finding you need to use four, instead of two fingers to stop in a hurry. But to rush things on a HarleyDavidson is to miss the point, and while this new engine is a triumph of US style, combined with a very easy nature, the attitude is still the same – relax, and enjoy the ride. The turning circle is great, the steering quick and
easy, and of course that very low seat inspires confidence. The pegs are set in such a way that they make paddling the bike more awkward, and I wish Harley would add springs to their footpegs, but it feels a fairly natural riding position. I’d want to push the pegs forward, but there’s little doubt that it’ll be an accessory option, particularly if more variants of this platform emerge. The Street 750 is fast. For a Harley. It’s light. For a Harley. And it’s cheap. For a Harley. In fact, it’s cheap by anyone’s standards. It’s not got the go of an MT-07 of course, but it’s fun, it’s relaxing, and it’s got a whole lot of character. It’s an introduction to biking for some, a welcome to the Harley brand for others. Or it’s a reaffirmation of motorcycling’s most established custom brand. One hundred and thirteen years of heritage in a bargain-priced bike that anyone can ride. Sounds like a great deal to me.
A more traditional Harley take on customising the Street...
Custom potential The bike was launched in Europe in late 2014 for the 2015 model year; when Harley-Davidson created its ‘Battle of the Kings’ dealer custom build competition, while the UK saw shops work on the Forty-Eight, other countries based their projects on the Street 750. With a budget of €4000 for parts (at least 75% of which must be official H-D), and a maximum of 50 hours labour, the competition proved that totally unique machines are within the reach of many buyers. My favourite was the Scrambler shown here – it was billed to its buyer for about €20,000, but as many riders would no doubt want to do some of the work themselves, the fact that around half that cost is in labour makes for an exciting prospect.

Details like covers and pegs add to the bike’s presence.

20 ROAD TEST
These girls can (and do) MCM headed out on a typical summer’s day with five women motorcyclists to see if they preferred a naked roadster or one of the new ‘customisable’ cruisers for their riding needs. Words by: Carli Ann Smith Pictures by: Gary D Chapman They’re two of the hottest sectors in motorcycling right now, the naked roadster and the emerging cruiser. Both have their individual merits and both can be aimed at the same, or similar, markets. New riders, riders who don’t want a tonne of power or riders who want to enjoy the ride instead of worrying about speeding tickets are all in the sights of these bikes.
And it’s fair to say that these motorcycles are, largely, also being aimed squarely at female riders. So we got a group of five ladies together to see what they made of two very different types of motorcycles from Kawasaki – the Z300 and the Vulcan S.
The Vulcan S
Launched earlier this year, the Vulcan S was developed with a focus on rider
ergonomics, style and increasing rider confidence. It’s powered by a retuned version of the Versys 650 and ER6 649cc liquid-cooled, four-stroke engine. It’s priced at £6049, produces 61bhp @ 7500rpm – an A2 licence compliant version is available – and

Between April 2014 and March 15, more than 2800 women passed their module one test and over 2700 passed their module two. This isn’t a new phenomenon though – there have been lots of motorcycles made specifically for ladies including bikes in the early part of the last century which had a dropped frame for a lower ride-height.
be adjusted into three different positions – keep them as standard or move them forwards or backwards by 25mm. The ‘ERGOFIT’ set up means that there are also additional accessories to further personalise it: reduced reach, mid-reach – which is the standard machine as bought in a dealership – and extended reach to suit short, medium and tall riders respectively. Those needing reduced or extended reach have the option to change the handlebars and the seat from the accessory range, which change the dimensions of the bike.
ROAD TEST 21 Meet The ladies who ride Lara Marzec from Lincoln has been riding bikes for the last six years and currently rides a Honda CB500 and a Yamaha R6. She rides on the road and also does the odd track day with the mantra: “Life’s too short not to ride motorbikes!”
Clare Scott has been riding since April this year but has thrown herself in at the deep end since getting her licence and is out on her Ducati 848 Evo whenever she gets the chance. She’s from North Yorkshire so Squires is a regular weekend jaunt for her.
Emma Selway may be the baby of the bunch but she’s has been riding since she was 12 years old. She currently races a Yamaha R6 on the track and can be seen overtaking on the inside, outside – wherever she spots a gap!
Woodland wedding planner by day and committed track rider and occasional racer by weekend, Tess Bickerstaff has been riding bikes for 24 years on the road and loves to head out on two wheels to forget the stresses of everyday life.
Lise Jackson hails from Sheffield and has a Kawasaki Z1000SX – a bike she calls her boy, Big Zed. She’s part of the admin team for South Yorkshire Lady Bikers and has been riding on and off for over 30 years. She’s never afraid to say what she thinks…

Smiles are the result of a good day!
What did our test riders think?
Lara: “It’s a cruiser style machine, so not what I am used to. It took me a while to stop trying to put my feet behind me but I got used to it the longer I spent on it.”
Emma: “Having come from only riding sports bikes and Motocross bikes, it was a strange position for me to be sat in but it’s better than I thought it was going to be and found the engine to be punchy.” Lise: “The Vulcan really surprised me. I used to ride a Harley Sportster but have never ridden a bike with foot forward controls before. I enjoyed it and got used to it once you’ve got your position from setting off. It was very
comfortable – the larger seat is great for those people who are of the larger build. I could get my feet down easily thanks to the low seat height – I really liked it.” Tess: “This has taken me back to my national chopper club days. I kept putting my foot down and then realising that the footpegs were in
front of me! I was actually more taken with it than I thought I would be actually and the engine is quite responsive once you get it pinned open – obviously its not the best day to try it for that though – and the engine gives a nice throaty roar on blipping the throttle. It’s a nice little bike – I was more impressed with it than I thought I would be.”
The Vulcan S is very narrow which makes it easy to get on with.

22 ROAD TEST The Z300
Priced at £4349, the Z300 is the latest in the Z Series line-up and is A2 compliant, meaning it’s an option for those just starting out on their riding careers. It has all the same styling and supernaked design as the bigger brothers in the Z family and gives the impression that it’s packing much more than a 296cc parallel twin engine in the steel chassis. It has ABS as standard and a power output of 39bhp @ 11,000rpm. Seat height is 785mm meaning it’s accessible for those with a shorter inside leg and with a fuel capacity of 17 litres, riders won’t be spending all their time at a petrol pet l station. t ti
What did our test riders think?
Lara: “I loved the Z300, it was so nippy and brilliant for weaving w in and out of traffi traffic. c. It was d definitely easy to ride and get used to.” Clare: “It was fun, fun nimble and in my opinion, I think it’s i a great bike to instil confidence confidence in new riders.”
Tess: “The Z300 looks great – and it has an Akrapovic end can which is a nice touch. It has quite a high riding position with upright bars and gives good visibility over the top of cars – which is handy when commuting through town. “I found it needed to be kept up in the revs to get the best out of the performance but it would certainly be a good bike to get to work on and have a laugh with your mates. “The Ninja 300 – which is a similar engine size – does have its own race series so obviously the bike has more potential than I was able to explore in the fairly poor weather conditions we had for the test. “If you put a learner rider on that bike then they’re going to go up the grades progressively and not scare themselves early on – plus there are other models in the Z range that they will be able to move up onto like the Z800 and Z1000.”

IIt looks great too.” Lise: “It’s very light, lig manageable and easy to get your ffeet down – a really good confi dence giver for someone confidence who has maybe just passed their test. j I really enjoyed rriding it, perhaps with me having ridden a bigger bike r for so long then iit’s not the bike for me but it’s defi nitely great for those defini who want to brin bring on their riding – I can think of ride riders I know now who it would be perfect for.”

26 THE CAROLE NASH CLASSIC MOTORCYCLE MECHANICS SHOW | OCTOBER 17-18
OCTOBER 17-18 | THE CAROLE NASH CLASSIC MOTORCYCLE MECHANICS SHOW 27
Welcome! Those who have been to every Carole Nash Classic Motorcycle Mechanics Show (and I bet there are a few of you out there) might want to skip this first bit: 2015 marks the 22nd running of the world-renowned bike event. That’s a lot of history. In fact, some of the newest modern-classics which we’ll be celebrating were probably new when the first show took place. A scary thought! With all of that history comes plenty of tradition, and as ever we’ve done our best to uphold it for 2015. The traders, the clubs, the display bikes, the activities, the auction... it’s all happening and having talked to many of the sellers and exhibitors attending this year, the standard is going to be as high as ever. On the other hand, we’re well aware that just because the show has 21 successful years under its belt, that doesn’t mean we can rest on our laurels. In 2014 we introduced Cavalcade Sessions to the showground’s main ring, and this has proved to be a popular addition which will be making its return. At our April event in Stafford we launched the Restoration Theatre, where expert advice on restoring and maintaining old bikes is delivered in separate sessions held throughout the day. That’s being introduced to the October event as well. These certainly aren’t fundamental changes, but developments to a muchloved formula which we’re confident will give visitors an even more rounded and jam-packed show experience. This Show Guide provides the necessary information on everything taking place, but if you have any questions once you’re through the gates then our information desk is always manned. Before, during or after the show you can get all the latest from our website – classicbikeshows. com – where you will also find links to our Facebook, Twitter and Instagram pages, plus information on how to download our Classic Bike Shows App available for Apple and Android devices. All that’s left for me to say is thank you to everyone involved in the organisation and delivery of the event. You are what makes the show the spectacle that it is, and we look forward to welcoming you all on October 17-18… and then for many years to come. Nick Mowbray Exhibition manager Classic Bike Shows
Sponsor’s message Welcome to the 22nd annual Carole Nash Classic Motorcycle Mechanics show! It’s great to be sharing this brilliant event again with bikers all over the UK, and the show just keeps getting bigger and better every year.
So, what is packed into these two fantastic days? Hard to know where to start, but for a kick-off there’s a whole host of club stands, exciting live action, the Bonhams sale, classic off-road machines and special guest stars from iconic eras of motorcycling. There’s a big focus on celebrating vintage and modern classics from the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s and we think these are going to be the real show-stoppers. Come and drool over them – if you can get near enough! Each day, the main arena will be buzzing with live action, too. And be sure to look out for famous faces. In the market for a new ride? Then you’ll be heading straight for Bonhams’ hall where bikes and parts are being snapped up by eager collectors. In fact, you’ve got more than 900 motorcycle displays, trade and autojumble stands to pack in. No wonder more than 30,000 bike-mad punters zoom in on this unmissable event each year.
It’s the highlight of every enthusiast’s calendar, so we’re proud to be sponsors because we’re equally nuts about anything on two wheels. Keep an eye out for the Carole Nash crew, who’ll be handing out loads of goodies and prizes. OCTOBER 17-18 | THE CAROLE NASH CLASSIC MOTORCYCLE MECHANICS SHOW 29
The Stafford show gets a ‘restoration’
Pete Thorne will be guiding showgoers through various technical elements with live demonstrations.
A new element will make its debut at October’s Carole Nash Classic Motorcycle Mechanics Show as organisers introduce the Restoration Theatre. The attraction was first run at the sister event in April this year, and its popularity has seen it continued for autumn’s upcoming weekend, one of the biggest on the classic calendar. Held in one of the side buildings of the main hall, the live event is hosted by Pete Thorne from ITV’s The Motorbike Show, and sees several presentations taking place throughout the day on a range of restoration and maintenance topics. Four sessions on each day will cover electrical systems, the do’s and don’ts of restoration, top end overhauls and an open-floor question and answer discussion. All sessions are part of the show and so there is no additional charge to attend. All the times are listed here in the Show Guide as part of the timetable on page 37.
Millyard making the headlines at Stafford shows Master bike-maker Allen Millyard is a well-known figure throughout the classic scene. Through Classic Bike Shows’ sponsors he’s recently been displaying some of his finest creations at the Stafford shows, and at the upcoming event two of his examples will be on display on the Carole Nash stand. We’ve got information on one of them, a stunning Honda, from the man himself… Honda SS100 V Twin The engine was made from two SS50 four-speed engines. Basically, I cut up two sets of crankcases and welded the pieces together to form new crankcases for the V Twin engine. The crankshaft was stripped and reassembled with two connecting rods side-by-side
on a longer crankpin, and the oil pump was upgraded to flow oil to the rear vertical cylinder. I retained the original points ignition, adding a second set of points for the rear cylinder. The frame is strengthened internally and I added two additional supports to stiffen the rear frame. The electrics are 12v and the
TT legend comes to Stafford Legend, great, superstar… these superlatives, far too often overused, get somewhere close to doing justice to John McGuinness. As of 2015, he is a 23-times TT winner, the absolute lap record holder for the Mountain Course and he’s closing in on the all-time haul of 26 wins set by Joey Dunlop. His consistency and longevity are unrivalled in the modern era too; no matter who or what has presented a challenge, the Morecambe Missile has continually had the answers. The numbers are impressive, but aside from that the affable 43-year-old has also
won legions of fans with his modest, humble and humorous approach. He understands the TT, and most importantly he understands those who travel from all over the world to watch it. He respects the event’s history, and he respects all those involved. Classic Bike Shows is delighted to welcome him to the Carole Nash Classic Motorcycle Mechanics Show as the star guest of honour, and we are sure he is going to prove a huge hit with the thousands who will pour through the gates to hear him talk about arguably one of the greatest ever careers in motorcycle sporting history.
battery is relocated into the seat hump. The engine makes around 10bhp (dyno tested) and it will cruise at 55mph with a top speed of 72mph. This bike has received the Wow Factor award from an international panel of judges at Salon Privé Concourse d’Elegance Sion Park London in 2012.

run for years so its potential new owner will want to spend some time checking it over. Though it doesn’t go, I couldn’t resist climbing on board, with it on the stand, and ‘tucking myself in’. It
is a small machine, with elbows and knees in close proximity when a racing crouch is adopted. With recommissioning and renovation, it will give a ride which won’t disappoint. Or at least a noise which will prove memorable. What a fascinating machine.” Read James’s full profile in the October issue of The Classic MotorCycle, on sale now in stores, at classicmagazines.co.uk or on the main stand in the main hall at the Stafford event.
1920s Broughs
Part of the main sale on Sunday, October 18, several of the most desirable Brough Superiors ever produced will go under the hammer – part of collection from Australia. Star lots include a dismantled 1926 Brough Superior 980cc SS100 Alpine Grand Sport (pictured) estimated at £120,000£160,000, and a 1936 Earls Court Motorcycle Show Brough Superior 990cc SS100, expected to fetch £210,000£240,000.
Life-size Rossi
At last year’s Autumn Stafford sale, one Sebastian Vettel turned up to bid on a few lots. Another racing great will be involved at October’s event, but, unfortunately for his legion of fans, not quite the real thing! A life-size cut-out of Valentino Rossi, signed by the man himself, will be auctioned to raise funds for charity.
OCTOBER 17-18 | THE CAROLE NASH CLASSIC MOTORCYCLE MECHANICS SHOW 39
Auction do’s and don’ts
For many it’s the highlight of the weekend, but if you think you can just turn up at the Bonhams Autumn Stafford Sale and expect to walk away with a bargain, think again. Buying at an auction needs careful planning and consideration. After all, fail to prepare, prepare to fail. Here are some simple tips from The Classic MotorCycle editor James Robinson to help you on your way… I’ve bought quite a bit at auction, for myself and on behalf of others. I’ve also bid for a lot and come away with nothing. I’ve regularly ignored my own advice and almost landed myself with something I didn’t really want, while I’ve also stood next to someone and bid on their behalf, and despite their encouragement to keep going past the price we’d agreed pre-sale, I’ve turned and walked away. Bidding is exciting, but it’s nervewracking too. Having bid (and won) on a motorcycle for someone out of the country, communicating via a very
dodgy mobile signal, I committed myself to a contract for significantly more than I paid for my house. One’s palms become sweaty and pulse quickened… I’ve gone specifically to buy one bike and come away with another of the same marque/model, as the catalogue’s pictures flattered the first one but made the other look worse than it really was, while I’ve also bought a bike because it just seemed too cheap to let pass by. I’ve also regretted having not bid on a bike that’s gone ‘cheap’, but if I’d been bidding for it, then the other person might have been prepared to go on and
The auction hall can be a daunting place, but not if you have a plan.
on too. So never walk away thinking ‘I should have had that at that price’ because, basically, you never can; if you’d have been bidding then the price would have been higher. It’s also worth, if you can, getting a look at who you’re bidding against. If you’re up against one bloke, who’s stood with his wife and son, say, then he’s normally come specifically for that lot. Unless you’re prepared to ‘go all the way’ and beyond, you’ll never win. However, if you are up against a dealer and you’re prepared to pay market value (even if it is beyond what you think) you’ll always succeed as a dealer needs to sell on whatever he buys for a profit. And as (very roughly) most dealers look to make £1000 out of every bike, then you have that ‘in hand.’ Do… ● Have a price, and stick to it ● Always register, you never know ● Check the documents/anything else with the lot ● Speak to someone about ‘your’ lot ● Try and view the day before Don’t… ● Miss the lot you came for ● Bid on a whim ● Stand behind someone tall ● Get carried away/competitive ● Bid on the wrong lot (I’ve seen it happen)

40 THE CAROLE NASH CLASSIC MOTORCYCLE MECHANICS SHOW | OCTOBER 17-18
INTERNATIONAL DIRT BIKE SHOW 41
THE COUNTDOWN IS ON FOR
THE DIRT BIKE SHOW
INTERNATIONAL DIRT BIKE SHOW: Thursday, October 29, to Sunday, November 1, 2015, Stoneleigh Park, Warwickshire. Europe’s largest dedicated off-road exhibition kicks off next month on October 29 at Stoneleigh Park, near Coventry, and it’s the only venue where you’ll find all the important dirt-biking motorcycle manufacturers under the one extended roof. Whether the discipline is motocross, enduro, trial, trail, adventure, supercross, classic, electric or minibike, for competition or fun, production or in race-trim, they will all be on display.
Electric charge
In addition to the diverse array of petrol-powered dirt hardware, it’s also the place to head to if you fancy checking out the all-new mountain bike from Bultaco, as the iconic Spanish brand returns with a farfrom-ordinary comeback model. The innovative Bultaco Brinco is a high-spec, pedal-assisted electric mountain bike with a 2.6bhp motor incorporated into the back wheel, producing 44.2lbft of torque. It will get its first UK unveiling at this year’s International Dirt Bike Show, where it promises to be something of a talking point. Elsewhere on the electric front, Mecatecno will have its range of kids’
trials bikes on display and available to test, as will Electric Motion with its novice and intermediate selection and, for the more experienced rider, the KTM Freerider E is sure to be of interest.
Feet up
Also getting its UK exhibition debut is the Spanish-built Vertigo Combat trials bike. Multi World trials champion Dougie Lampkin has been instrumental in the development of the machine and even won his ninth Scottish Six Days Trial on it earlier this year. Its agility and capabilities will be ably demonstrated by six-time British trials champion James Dabill in daily Arena Trials throughout the four-day Show. And fans of two-strokes – of which there are many – will be able to give it the once over on Lampkin’s stand in hall three.
Entertainment express
In recent years, the show has become increasingly popular for its raft of live entertainment and have-a-go activities. The incredibly fast-paced Minibike Champs will return with the International Dirt Bike Show Minibike Supercross and a bigger, better and
more spectacular track. Racing will run over the four days of the show with a new race format incorporating eight action-packed classes catering for 50cc Kids right the way through to Pro 160cc. The fun starts even before you enter the show halls though as the gravitydefying Wall of Death will be situated out front adjacent to the catering units, and then once inside, the activity halls will house kids’ quads, Strider bikes, the have-a-go Electric Zone and My First Honda Licence.
Save on admission
Tickets for the Dirt Bike Show are now on sale and a substantial saving can be
made by buying in advance, particularly for Discount Thursday. Advance adult ticket holders, aged 16 and over, will only pay £8 for entry on the show’s opening day, which represents a massive 50% discount. Travel with your family and friends and there are even more ways to save a quid or two with family and group tickets. There is no booking fee and parking at the venue is absolutely free. For more International Dirt Bike Show news and updates, be sure to visit and bookmark www. dirtbikeshow.co.uk and while there, why not download the official App and ‘like’ the show’s FaceBook, or follow the Twitter feed.
42 WHAT’S ON
Great Rides #4 – Shearwater Lake
A perfect, 65-mile long ride that takes in the New Forest and the mighty Shearwater Lake. Blissful on a bike! Words by Jayne Clements
About the route This route takes in the scenic countryside of Hampshire, Wiltshire and Dorset and goes through the New Forest, which dates back to the time of William the Conqueror, who set aside the forest for hunting over 900 years ago. There are plenty of small towns and villages along the route that you can visit as you ride through. Shaftesbury is such a town, with a recorded history going back to Saxon times. Walking around the abbey, you can experience what it was like in the time of King Alfred the Great (the king
who burnt the cakes and died in 899AD) or visit the Gold Hill Museum to learn about the history of the area. The route also takes you through Gillingham, where there is a museum showing Gillingham’s railway history. The name of the route comes from Shearwater Lake. Here you can stretch your legs by taking a walk round the lake, have a picnic as there are plenty of places you can stop to eat along the route. It is open 24 hours a day, every day of the year.

It’s not bikes, but you might find this interesting… Portsmouth Historic Dockyard, Victory Gate, HM Naval Base, Portsmouth PO1 3LJ. Visitor Centre – 02392 728060 (open daily 10am-5pm), www.historicdockyard.co.uk Opening times – see website or ring visitor centre for details. Portsmouth Historic Dockyard is home to three of the most important and iconic naval ships in history: The Mary Rose, HMS Victory and HMS Warrior 1860, plus plenty of other attractions. The Mary Rose now has its own museum which opened earlier
this year and reunites it with many of its 19,000 artefacts and crew. This museum has been built around the ship and for the first time, visitors will be able to see it with the preserving sprays switched off. Also on display is HMS Victory, which is the oldest commissioned warship in the world and a memorial to Vice Admiral Lord Horatio Nelson. Visitors can see on board The Great Cabin, where the Battle of Trafalgar was planned and the spot where Nelson died. The other warship is HMS Warrior 1860 and this was the world’s first
iron-hulled, armoured warship that was both powered by steam and sail; and it is the only surviving ship of Queen Victoria’s Black Battle Fleet. There are four decks to the ship, which gives the visitor a feel of what life was like as a Victorian sailor. There are also other attractions to visit; this coming spring there will be a major exhibition opening in the brand new Babcock Galleries, called Hear My Story, Action Stations, which brings the modern Royal Navy to the visitor, the National Museum of the Royal Navy and harbour trips.

The Furygan Dark Apex leather one-piece race suit
Reviewed by: Joe Dick | £599.99 | sizes 46-58 | www.nevis.uk.com Straight out of the packaging the Furygan Dark Apex one piece suit looks and feels superb. Straight off the bat it’s worth noting that the Dark Apex Perforated suit is CE approved, which is nice. Furygan has made the Apex suit from full grained 1.4mm leather with aramid reinforcement in the hips and seat area to improve the resistance of the leather and also to delay any heat transmission cause by abrasion in the event of a spill. The firm has incorporated some nice stretch panels across the whole suit too meaning that moving about on the bike isn’t restrictive in the slightest. It is a comfortable suit, although that’s only after you’ve got a few miles into it. I may have eaten a few pies recently but it sure was snug once I got my back protector on. However, a rain shower or two later and a few rides out I can now
slip into the suit in great comfort. Not only are there stretch panels, but for added protection and flexibility large leather stretches behind the shoulders, the back and the knees have been incorporated. It may not sound like much but I can vouch that this really does add a little something for comfort on those longer rides. It’s no surprise that, adding to the already great quality of the suit, Furygan has inserted homologated D3O protection on the shoulders, elbows and knees. A real nice feature for that added peace of mind that if something were to happen, there’s some good bash plates that’ll take the brunt of the bounce. I have to say though that in my experience, especially in the early stages of wearing this suit it was really easy to dislodge some of the internal armour as
it’s Velcroed in place. While that does mean it’s removable should you want a little more room, it can become an annoyance to those in a real rush to get the suit on and go riding. Furygan has also incorporated triple stitching into areas prone to tearing in an accident to help stop ruining the suit after an off. With that, they’ve also added thermoformed external shells with aluminium inserts to the elbows and shoulders... Snazzy. Although I think the Velcro removable plasticky elbow slider/ shells are a bit unnecessary and rather annoying at times as they don’t always stick down completely and can get caught up when you’re tucked in behind the bubble. All in all though, I’m more than impressed with this suit. It looks nice, it fits nice, and despite its little niggles, I think it’s out and out value for money.
Sydney to London… The Long Ride Home Reviewed by: John Milbank | £12 | www.nathanmillward.com When you spend all day reading and writing about motorcycles, a book about biking that keeps you awake at night has to be something special. Nathan Millward’s account of his ride home – 23,000 miles from Australia to London – is something very special indeed. Nathan’s journey took nine months and covered 18 countries, including India, Pakistan, Russia and China. There was no planning, he just got on his bike and rode. He was 26. His bike was a 105cc ex-postal service Honda CT110 called Dorothy. I usually spend my nights before bed reading mainsteam crime thrillers, generally falling asleep with the book on my chest. The Long Ride Home kept me awake at nights, the book delivering real excitement, and sometimes worry, with every page. This is a genuinely moving account of Nathan’s trip, and his personal reasons for the ride make it all the more compelling. Regardless of whether motorcycle adventure interests you, Nathan’s story is an absolutely fantastic read. In fact, it doesn’t even matter if you’re a biker – the very personal story is that strong. This is one of those rare books that I’m
looking forward to reading again (after my wife’s finished it). Nathan has self-published the book; it was originally released by HarperCollins, but only in Australia. Buying it from his website for just £12 will include delivery of a signed copy, or it’s available from Amazon. A Kindle edition is also on sale for just £5.39, though the 40 pages of photos in the print edition make it well worth the extra cost. cost
Givi XS317 Xstream rucksack Tested by: John Milbank | £108.99 | www.givi.co.uk | 01327 706220
The 30 litre Xstream is most likely to find favour with riders needing to carry their kit to work. The large main section is easy to access, with a water-resistant zip running around three sides, while a fabric ‘web’ towards the bottom allows the front to tip forwards without the contents spilling out. A deep zipped mesh pocket holds pens, phone, cables etc. with two open mesh pockets suitable for bottles or cans. The top of the pack has a waterresistant zipped, soft-lined glasses pocket (which I use for change and my security pass). Between the main straps and the thicklypadded 3D mesh back is a water-
resistant zipped laptop pocket big enough for 15in laptops. I’ve had no problem getting two MacBooks in here, as well as some paperwork – it’s heavy, but I need it. The base hides a stretchy fabric helmet carrier which will support a lid on the back of the bag. It’s not suitable for riding with, but handy when you’re off the bike. The zips shouldn’t be relied upon to keep heavy rain out, but an integral fluoro rain cover can be pulled out of the top to protect the main compartment. It seems an oversight that this doesn’t cover the laptop compartment, though it’s nestled well against your body, so water would struggle to reach your machine.
City riders will most likely find this pack ideal for the daily commute, but if your journey is longer, and you’re likely to be riding a lot in bad weather, it’d be worth bagging your laptop just to be sure, or looking at 100% waterproof packs.

THE INSIDE LINE TO CLASSIC JAPANESE IRON WITH STEVE COOPER FROM THE VJMC 53
Buying your first Japanese classic If you’re going to make a savvy investment in great old metal then here’s what you really need to know. Words and pictures: Steve Cooper The VJMC has a long and proud heritage of rescuing old motorcycles from almost certain doom. Years before the current frantic fiscally motivated classic scene got going the club’s members were restoring bikes that, frankly, no one else gave a damn about. Times have changed and what was once old tat is now highly desirable.
And when the so-called clever money went for the expensive and iconic stuff many of our members just smiled quietly to themselves. When the burgeoning moneyed ranks began throwing obscene amounts of dosh at those must-have megabikes many knew the true value was not in the commercial aspect of the bikes but, rather, lay in their technical workings
allied to the ease with which they might be restored. What follows is by no means exhaustive but should at least guide aspirant and would-be fettlers, restorers and enthusiasts along the correct path. Don’t believe everything you read; information in magazines decades old is very possibly out of date. For example Yamahas are not any harder to restore or obtain parts for than any other make. The easiest and most inspirational way of getting into the whole thing is to buy a running machine with a UK plate and papers. Running bikes are infinitely more rewarding than dead ones; a simple but easily overlooked maxim. Sellers telling you it only needs a little bit of work and a set of plugs are probably spinning you a line. If it’s that easy to fix, how come they haven’t done it and added two grand to the price? If you are new to the classic scene then be aware that all that glistens is not gold. Many an old shonker has been tarted up with fresh paint, some T-Cut to the frame and overzealous polishing of ageing chrome. A £250 blow over of a tank and two side panels instantly transforms all but
“The Home of the Japanese Classic” the most obvious dog. Without doubt a running classic is a thing of joy. It may not throw big numbers on the clock but the sense of speed is just as great. Pretty much any Japanese bike from 1963 to 2000 will be reliable and rewarding to run and own. Any bike from anywhere in non-running condition is likely to be the object of potential frustration. Simply put, buy a working motorcycle not a money pit! So what to buy? The correct response should be ‘how long have you got?’ There is no one size fits all solution but initially the bike should have the following merits. It appeals to you aesthetically; if it doesn’t float your boat look elsewhere. It needs to fit you; if you’re 6ft 7in a period tiddler may leave you seriously cramped because they can be very small. Check out the bulk and mass; older Japanese bikes are substantially weightier than the equivalent modern machine of the same capacity. For example Yamaha’s XS1100 is 70 kilos heavier than the modern MT-09 from the same firm. Period candy paint and acres of chrome can be worryingly bewitching and beguiling. Mechanics is a good place to start. Look on line at places like Bike Trader and eBay and get a feel for the price ranges and finally don’t set your heart on just one model based simply on a whim. A Suzuki GT250 is just as viable as a Yamaha YDS7 and likewise there’s little in reality to choose between the contemporary 500/550 fours offered by any of the Big Four. If you buy from a dealer be prepared to pay more and make sure that if the bike comes with a warranty (and quite a few do) it covers the things you can’t fix for a reasonable period. The Vintage Japanese Motorcycle Club has been encouraging and supporting newcomers since 1982 so if anyone knows about old Japanese bikes it’s likely to be us guys. Chances are there’s a local section near you; we have almost 50 of them across the UK and Ireland and if they can’t help there’s strength in depth elsewhere within the club. 54 USED BIKE RIDE
Secondhand Buyer’s Guide:
Triumph’s Speedmaster A modern day take on a hot rod classic for the non-cruisin’, cruising’ generation Words and pictures: Bob Pickett The Speedmaster was launched in 2003. Based on the America, the original model had a 790cc air-cooled dohc parallel twin engine, expanded to 865cc in 2005 and in 2007 it switched to fuel injection. Designed as a tribute to the ‘hot rods’ of the 60s it has a pared-back look, losing the chrome on the America. We took out a 2014 example, featuring black teardrop mirrors and Triumph Short Slash Cut Silencers.
Give me some spec
An 865cc, dohc air-cooled parallel twin engine puts out 53lb-ft of torque at just 3300 revs (maximum power 61bhp @ 6800 revs), housed in a tubular steel cradle frame that sits long and low (690mm seat height, 1606mm wheelbase). Stopping power comes from a single 310mm front disc supported by a 285mm rear, both with two-piston calipers. The pair work best applied in unison.
What’s it like to ride?
Riding position is lovely. Pegs are forward set, the bars lean you gently forward into an engaged but comfortable position (you could ride in that stance all day; whether the soft saddle would allow is another question). Those girder-like
handlebars could have come from Mr Bloor’s other business! But they work well and lend to the overall look of the bike. The engine suits the bike perfectly. It doesn’t really want to waste time under 30mph, but it will trundle (when I got into traffic I stuck it in first and bimbled). Fun was setting up for an overtake then blipping the throttle and letting it punch forward. Motorway speeds were effortless and the riding stance seemed to avoid turning you into a sail. Suspension is quite firm for the class, but still soaked up most stuff without fuss. The road into Trinity Buoy Wharf (where I took the photos) is poorly surfaced at present, but it trundled over that without hassle, although the uneven approach road to the roundabout that turns onto my back road test sent unwanted feedback rippling through the bars. Handling is predictable. It holds a line perfectly, liking a dip of the hip to get it turning. The way to ride it is to keep your head up, look well into the bend and let it flow from one corner to the next. Oh and the sound! The bark when opening the throttle for overtakes was addictive. Politically incorrect perhaps, but the Short Cut pipes sound fantastic.
I suppose a lot of people would ask the question: How does it compare to a 1200 Sportster? I haven’t ridden one in a while, but from memory it was a familiar ride, but this time with better brakes.
What nick is it in?
Condition is perfect. With so few miles on the clock, there are plenty of miles left in the tyres and it is a while before the next service is due.
What’s it worth?
The dealer wants £7099 for a 2014 model in pristine condition with 2350 miles on the clock. Sticking purely to 2014 bikes, a dealer search came up with a price range from £5995 with 6000 miles up to £7599 with 3000 miles recorded. ■ With thanks to Jack Lilley, Romford, for the loan of the bike.
