Schwantz out of retirement... and straight onto the podium American GP racing legend Kevin Schwantz has returned to the podium almost 19 years to the day after he topped his last at the 1994 British GP. Teamed with ex-WSB star Noriyuki Haga and GP stalwart Yukio Kagayama, Schwantz, 49, raced Kagayama’s Japanese Superbike Suzuki GSX-R1000 to the third step at this year’s prestigious Suzuka 8 Hour endurance race. The team finished only one lap down on the winning Mushahi RT Harc Pro team of Leon Haslam, Michael Van der Mark, and Takumi Takahashi. Schwantz wore a Wayne Rainey replica helmet in honour of his racing rival. No stranger to the track since retiring from GPs in 1995, Schwantz continues to be involved with bikes at his US-based race schools.
Family fun at the Dirt Bike Show You don’t have to be an off-road aficionado to get the best out of the 2013 International Dirt Bike Show. Many of today’s top road racers, and indeed leisure road riders, cut their biking teeth on a mini-crosser or trials bike. So if you’ve a budding Cal Crutchlow or Ewan McGregor in the family itching to learn to ride, a visit to this year’s show won’t disappoint. Nearly all the manufacturers offer youth machines with some of the electric bikes from Mecatecno and Oset suitable for riders from as young as two. There will be plenty on offer for the whole family in terms of free-of-charge activities, with a variety of machine types for children to try out. But it’s not all about the kids. The largest dirt bike show in Europe caters for all with a nose for mud. Expect the top manufacturers from the world of motocross, enduro and trials such as KTM, Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki, Yamaha, TM, GasGas, Sherco and Beta all lined up to show their latest wares. Throw electric trials specialists Oset and Mecatecno into the mix, together with a host of retail clothing, parts and accessory stands, and there’s something for everyone.
The hugely popular Extreme Mountain Bike Show will return to wow the crowd with a new stage show, and Flat Track Racing experts will demonstrate how to use body position, braking and throttle control to get low and slide into turns. The International Dirt Bike Show is at Stoneleigh Park, near Coventry, Warwickshire. It runs Thursday, Oct 31 to Sunday, Nov 3. Tickets are on sale now and can be bought by following the link on the show’s website at www.dirtbikeshow.co.uk or by calling the box office on 0844 338 8000.

Sarron to star at CMM’s Stafford Show GP star Christian Sarron is to take centre stage at the 20th Carole Nash Classic Motorcycle Mechanics Stafford Show on Saturday 19 and Sunday, October 20. Former 1984 250cc world champion Sarron made a name for himself as a master of riding in wet conditions in a Grand Prix racing career which spanned 14 years from 1977 to 1990 as well as a Bol d’Or win with brother Dominique Sarron in 1994. Pitted against the likes of Eddie Lawson, Freddie Spencer, Kevin Schwantz and Wayne Rainey, Sarron took a win and 13 podiums in the Blue Riband class aboard the Sonauto/Gauloises Yamahas for which he became synonymous. On top of on-stage interviews with Sarron, the CMM show is a must for anyone interested in motorcycles of all eras but with a leaning to Japanese machinery. Over the course of the weekend there’s a huge autojumble, club stands, the sights and sounds of running race bikes in the Classic Racer Grand Prix Paddock, the Classic Dirt Bike hall as well as the world-renowned wall of death. The annual Bonhams motorcycle auction also promises to have a huge selection of bikes and memorabilia for all pockets. Day tickets cost from £3 for children, £10 adults, £9 OAP. Tories float idea of allowing 15 minute double yellow line ‘grace period’ Motorists in England may get a ‘grace period’ to pick up goods from shops. Conservative ministers want to issue new guidelines before the general election to encourage councils to consider a grace period of between five and 15 minutes on double yellow lines. Some councils already allow motorists to park free of charge for up
to 30 minutes close to shops. Parking and waiting on double yellow lines is currently prohibited – unless stated – for all vehicles except for those making commercial deliveries and pick-ups, blue badge holders and the emergency services. At the moment, the largest fine for illegal parking outside London is £70, while it is £130 in the capital.

Avon Storm 3D X-M touring tyres These new additions to the Avon Storm Ultra family of sports touring tyres are made in Britain and aimed at the hypersport motorcycle market. The Avon Storm 3D X-M takes the unique technology found in the 3D Ultra sports tyre family and uses it to create a sports touring tyre which also delivers higher mileage. The Storm 3D X-M features interlocking three-dimensional points hidden in the tyre’s grooves, which are said to improve stability, grip and warm-up times, while limiting tread flex. These latest advances in tyre technology are married to a highperformance single and multi-compound silica-rich tread which enhances wet grip. Avon says the Storm 3D X-M gives superb handling and stability characteristics which are essential on today’s hyperbikes, such as the Suzuki GSX1300R Hayabusa, Kawasaki GTR1400 and Kawasaki ZZR1400. It can also transform the handling of older model hyperbikes, such as BMW’s K1300 series and Honda’s Super Blackbird. The Avon Storm 3D X-M is available now in sizes 120/70-ZR17 (front) and 180/55ZR17 and 190/50-ZR17 (rear). Visit www.avonmotorcycle.com for more information.

Peter Fonda sues Dolce & Gabbana Easy Rider star Peter Fonda is suing fashion house Dolce & Gabbana over a T-shirt featuring his image from the iconic 1969 biker movie. Fonda, 73, claims the image was used without his permission and has asked for $6 million (£3.9m) for “injuries to his peace, happiness, goodwill and reputation”. He has also filed for a share of any profits from the T-shirts, selling for $300 (£195) each. Easy Rider, directed by and co-starring the late Dennis Hopper, ushered in a new era of gritty American cinema when it was released at the tail end of the 1960s.

HAVE YOUR SAY Growing up in the saddle Dear MCM Thirty one years ago, at the age of 16, I began my road riding tales. It was difficult to fund my first bike as I was still at school and had parents unwilling to contribute to my possible fatality (their words not mine). But much wheeling and dealing, working, scrimping and saving saw the proud purchase of a Honda SS50. It didn’t take long to realise that this four-stroke was just way too slow compared to all my mates’ two-strokes. So once I’d left school and started work the SS was sold and a Suzuki AP50 purchased... real power with an indicated 60mph downhill flat on the tank. At 17 I was the first

★ MCM STAR LETTER OF THE MONTH year to be affected by the new 125cc law. So a Suzuki GT125 twin was gleaned... more twostroke heaven, followed by a coffin tank Yamaha RD250 once my test had been passed. For some reason I managed to blow up every two-stroke I owned – a lack of mechanical knowledge, and forgetfulness to fill the two-stroke oil tank being cited as the main reasons for the engines nipping up. Now, as a young man I loved bikes but my pockets weren’t exactly deep and my first mortgage at 19 years of age meant I simply had even less money, so a DT175 kept me very happy until I finally found a well paid career at 23 and bigger ‘proper’ four-strokes followed. At 25 I bought a TDM850, followed by a VFR750 and then came the big time... a brand spanking new ZX-9R in 1994. Three years of bliss, mostly, ended in four crashes, one on my first track day.
But hey ho these things happen, my big bike ownership had taken off and so had track days! My early thirties consisted of very fast road rides and some track days. Towards my late thirties I also found out what a great place Europe was to ride in and, hell, they even like bikers. Yearly holidays became the norm and what great memories I have of them and the friends I made. Into my forties, still on a staple diet of big road bikes, mainly flat-barred nakeds on the road and track bikes. European track day forays blossomed and I discovered nirvana. At 45, a massive crash at Donington on my track-prepped R1 tempered me somewhat. Some broken bones and a severe concussion were the main issues but looking at the state of my crash helmet made me think ‘how the hell did I survive’? I couldn’t remember what had happened either.
My road bike at that time, and still now, is a heavily modified Suzuki B-King. I had the truly brilliant idea of taking it to a two-day track day at Le Mans last year... but exactly one year to the day from the Donington incident I lobbed the BKing into a Le Mans gravel trap. I could have cried. I also broke my right foot. So what’s the point of the letter? It’s a self diagnosis. It’s taken me 31 years of road riding to finally appreciate that I’m not indestructible, I suffer badly from ‘track red mist’, I’m very good at crashing and I’m no longer so good at bouncing. But I’ve finally grown up. I no longer ride on the road like I’ve stolen it, I’m more thoughtful, careful and less crazy. I’ve even resigned from track days and taken up proper touring... on a Honda VFR1200. I might be old but I still love bikes... and the occasional wheelie. Gary Lydford

Turning into a pedal pusher Dear MCM For a bit of extra cash, and as a hobby, I have been doing up forgotten 50cc scooters and reselling them for the last six or seven years. It has been a good profitable hobby, and taking a garage confined non-runner and returning it to the road with full MoT is very satisfying. The reason I write is since the new testing rules that came out at the beginning of the year I have noticed a decline in sales and interest in first time machines. Initially I blamed it on the weather being so bad, and I hope the new regulations are not deterring
kids entering motorcycling. When I was young kids got bikes because they couldn’t afford cars but now it seems with insurance, petrol, tax, training and test costs, getting on the road when you’re 16-17 is just too expensive – car or motorcycle. So I have now stopped doing up scooters as the market is too slow, instead I am buying and selling push-bikes! Some of these are as technical as a motorcycle with hydraulic brakes and adjustable forks, just not the same when you hit a hill and have to pedal – I won’t be converted that’s for sure. It will be interesting to see the sales figures for 50cc bikes at the end of this year. Steve Jones

10 First ride MV Agusta F3 800
www.motorcyclemonthly.co.uk
Italian stallion
MV Agusta’s F3 triple gains extra ponies from larger capacity 800cc motor Words: Roland Brown Photography: Milagro After a day at Misano on the F3 800 my mind is spinning with images: cranking through the circuit’s two right-hand kinks at scary-fast speed; the laser-like precision with which the MV sliced through the double-apex right-hander; the ferocity with which its Brembo monoblocs slowed it into the first turn. It’s no great surprise that the F3 800 generated a vivid mental highlights reel from a day at an international racetrack. But as the adrenaline subsides, some slower, less exciting but arguably more revealing moments of the day come to mind. My deliberately stopstart rides down the pit lane in first gear, for example. And the handful of out-laps in the higher gears, rolling on the throttle at low revs to mimic a lazy road ride. The MV came through both of those relatively tedious tests with flying colours – or, to be more precise, with no sign of the erratic low-rev throttle response for which the F3 675 has been much criticised.
The 800s chassis is taken straight from the 675, as are the sharply styled bodywork and the trademark exhaust with its three short pipes on the right side. Paintwork comes in black and white or matt black, as well as the traditional red and silver. A sticker on the tank gives a reminder of the firm’s 37 world championships. Racing heritage is never far away with an MV Agusta. The frame is unchanged, with its combination of steel tubes and aluminium sections at the swingarm pivot. The new bike’s Sachs shock is delivered with more preload and revised damping to suit the engine’s extra power. Its Marzocchi forks are also firmed up slightly to handle the front brake, which is upgraded with Brembo monoblocs in place of the same firm’s standard radial four-piston calipers.
What’s new?
Giving the F3 a bigger motor was always going to add power. The good news is that this latest triple has some extra manners too. It has certainly gained performance – more than might be expected from the 123cc increase that takes capacity to 798cc. The new triple’s peak output of 148bhp is 20bhp up on the F3 675, almost matches the GSX-R750s 150bhp maximum, and far exceeds those of Triumph’s Daytona 675 and MV’s own F3 675cc, never mind the Japanese 600s.
The increase at lower revs is even more spectacular – roughly 30bhp between 8000 and 10,000rpm – and that’s no coincidence. Rather than being an enlarged version of the 675cc engine, the larger unit was conceived at the same time, and according to MV’s engineers is the one with optimum dimensions (the smaller F3 was released first for marketing and racing reasons, and scored its first World Supersport podium in May when the ParkinGO team’s Robbie Rolfo finished third at Donington).
The most important changes concern the engine. The main reason for the big midrange power gain is that, like the Brutale 800 unit that was released a few months ago, the extra capacity comes from a longer 54.3mm stroke, rather than a bigger bore (which is unchanged at 79mm). New pistons increase compression ratio from 12.5 to 13.3:1. The dohc engine’s 12 valves are made from titanium, like those of the smaller F3 but not the Brutale motors. As with all MV’s triples, the crankshaft spins in the opposite direction to the wheels, which the engineers say improves agility by reducing steering inertia. The longerstroke crankshaft requires shorter con rods. The F3 800 also becomes the first of the triples to get a slipper clutch. Its fuel and exhaust systems are mechanically unchanged, but engine management software has been updated in recent months. MV’s development team has done a
good job, too, as my Misano ride quickly confirmed.
What’s it like to ride?
From the fairly low rider’s seat this F3 has the same low screen, clip-ons under the top yoke, the same short petrol tank. When I pressed the starter button the motor came to life with a similar three-pot burble from the short, curved pipes behind my right boot. But this time after I’d let out the light clutch to pull away I was careful to ride slowly and deliberately up the pit lane, firstly trying to hold a steady pace, then accelerating and slowing to test the throttle response. Flawless. In Normal mode – the middle of the three main engine maps, between Sport and Rain (there’s also a tuneable Custom mode), the MV was responsive and composed, with no hint of low-rev roughness. By the time I’d ridden a gentle couple of laps to warm the tyres, accelerating from unnaturally low revs for a racetrack, it was clear that the new engine’s midrange delivery was as strong in real life as it looked on the dyno chart. The increase in torque over the F3 675 engine really is substantial: up from 31 to 46lb-ft at 4000rpm, for example; and from 40 to 57lb-ft at 8000rpm. Okay, so the ultra short-stroke F3 675 is peaky even by middleweight supersport standards, but this was something very different. Opening the throttle at pretty much any revs sent the 800 leaping forward, feeling more like an open-class bike than a 600. It continued to rev rapidly, as I hooked gears with the standard fitment quickshifter, but didn’t demand the manic riding style of the smaller engine bike. Whereas the F3 675 makes peak power at 14,500rpm and can be revved to 15 grand, the bigger engine dies away after 13,000rpm. It is notably

Main rival Triumph Daytona 675R, £10,599
Both the Daytona 675R and the standard version of Triumph’s middleweight super-sports triple are updated this year with a new, short-stroke engine. Even that 126bhp unit can’t match the larger MV motor’s power. The Daytona is supremely sorted, though, and the chassis, redesigned around the new exhaust system with lowlevel silencer, is sublime. Öhlins suspension and Brembo Monobloc calipers with ABS help give the 675R outstanding cornering and braking ability.
smooth and free-revving though, with a very direct throttle response. That was especially true in the more aggressive Sport mode, which I preferred on the track although the MV’s light, ride-by-wire throttle action requires a delicate right wrist. This more powerful and flexible bike would be both quicker and easier to ride, especially on an unfamiliar road. But it wouldn’t be an MV without a few niggles. The first was just that the tacho bar, which runs across the compact digital instrument panel, is too small to be read easily at a glance. At least there’s the exhaust note and the fairly visible shift light to go by. More serious was the gearchange; or to be more precise the quick-shifter. This is standard fitment on the 800 (it’s a £300 option on the 675) and worked fine for most changes. But both the F3s I rode had problems making the change up from third, frequently requiring a second tap of the lever before it went into fourth. Adjusting the lever helped
but didn’t completely cure the problem. Hopefully the gearbox glitch (which most, but not all, riders complained about) is electrical rather than mechanical, and will quickly be sorted. If so, MV’s cleverly designed electronics system means all F3 owners will be able to upgrade to the latest spec. This will have to be done by a dealer, so it’s not quite as easy as updating your mobile phone, but the service will be free of charge and will take only a few minutes. This potential for upgrading also applies to the F3s traction control system, which has also recently been updated. The system worked well although I was surprised at how much it cut in on the fourth setting of the eight. I much preferred the less intrusive second setting. Changes are made via a button on the left bar; shame you can’t easily fine-tune it on the move, as with some systems. I didn’t need much tuning of the suspension, just slightly more shock preload to prevent the rear end squatting under acceleration. The
Marzocchi front end was excellent: firm, well damped and precise. So much so that it was easy to run the MV over the kerb at the outside of the double-apex right-hander, never doubting that the bike would stick to the chosen line and sweep back for the second apex before flicking on to its other side for the left-hander on to the back straight. Stability was generally very good, though I did trigger one short fit of handlebar shaking, after shifting my body weight while still cranked over exiting a slow turn. As with the throttle action, this is small, racy, finely honed bike that responds to precise control and doesn’t appreciate clumsy movements. I didn’t find it particularly cramped, though, even though I’m very tall and the footrests aren’t adjustable. The firm 43mm forks also had no trouble dealing with the Brembo Monoblocs, whose fierce power at the end of the straight had me struggling to prevent myself being thrown over the handlebars. Stability under braking was good, probably helped by the new
Three colour options, but there’s only one real choice...
Single LCD shows all riding info slipper clutch. Shame there’s no ABS yet; it’s due on the F4 models soon but probably won’t make the F3 until next year. The triple will come with Pirelli’s Diablo Rosso Corsas but wore Supercorsa SPs for the launch. The sticky race-ready rubber was ideal for Misano, adding the finishing touch to a bike that was superbly fast, agile and rewarding to ride on the track. In many ways the 800s benefits should be even more obvious on the road, where its ability to accelerate from low or medium revs, even when in top at about 50mph, will be very useful on a busy A-road. And of course there’s that much improved fuelling, which should make this MV reasonably pleasant to live with even when pulling away from the lights or trickling down the high street. It certainly hasn’t gone soft, the F3 800; it’s a compact, racy, aggressive machine with plenty of performance, diamond-sharp handling and a snarly three-cylinder character. It still has a few rough edges, notably the quick-shift that urgently needs perfecting. Inevitably it’s considerably more expensive than the F3 675, which remains in the range. But it’s more refined and easier to ride as well as faster, and it’s surely the best value, most competitive sports bike yet from MV.

12 PRODUCTS HeliBars for Honda VFR1200
No matter how much effort a motorcycle manufacturer puts into getting the riding position of a bike just right, one thing is for certain – one size rarely fits all. Raising the handlebar position on even an accomplished sports tourer such as Honda’s VFR1200 can provide improved comfort, and that’s just what HeliBars have been doing since 1987. Apparently the VFR’s fairing and fuel tank created a design challenge for the development of bars to improve the machine’s long distance comfort, but the engineers at HeliBars eventually developed handlebars that are 50mm taller, 25mm further back and 25mm wider than the standard items. They’ve also managed to reduce the downward angle by eight degrees and the rearward angle by just over three degrees. HeliBars claims that combined, these subtle changes provide not only a more comfortable hand and arm position but also improve the position of the lower back.
Weise textile and leather jacket
German kit manufacturer Weise has updated its part leather, part Cordura Psycho jacket. The revamped jacket gets a new venting system along with a subtle use of modern reflective materials for better visibility with other road users in low light conditions. Popular with many riders for the comfort of Cordura but with leather in the key stress areas, you shouldn’t let the name put you off because this is possibly the best of both worlds. Manufactured from genuine Cordura, the shell of the jacket offers superior tear and abrasion resistance to regular fabrics and long-lasting durability too. Reinforced with

Knox Orsa gloves
The protection experts at Knox have launched the Orsa Leather glove, a vented summer glove, from their Hand Armour range. Designed to keep your hands cool and help prevent them sweating while riding, the gloves are made from soft but durable goatskin, and the back of the hand is perforated for ventilation. The knuckle area is shielded with impactabsorbing honeycomb gel and backed with memory foam. Additional protection is given on the palm with Knox’s Scaphoid Protection System (SPS), which is made up of two sliders that eliminate the grab effect which can occur when a leather palm makes contact with the road. Knox says SPS reduces the risk of hyper extension breaking the scaphoid bone in the wrist. To ensure a perfect fit, the whole thing is wrapped up with their BOA micro adjustable dial fit.
Scottoiler Mini vSystem
Keeping your chain well lubed and adjusted is not only essential to ensure it lasts for many tens of thousands of miles, it also ensures you get the most performance out of your bike. We’ve long been fans of the Scottoiler systems for doing just that. They’re great for touring bikes and commuters but have always been a little tricky to fit to a modern sports bike. Now, thanks to the new Mini vSystem from Scottoiler that’s all changed. In the light of customer feedback, the Scottish firm has produced the new system to cater for the rider who wants to jump on their bike for a weekend blast and not have to worry about cleaning and lubing their chain before they go. The new oiler is based on Scottoiler’s vacuum operated automatic chain oiler but features a smaller reservoir to give up to 500 miles between fill ups. This should appeal to those riders who head out for weekend rides and would rather have the unit tucked neatly away than the larger capacity of the standard oiler. Perfect if you can’t get the standard sized unit to fit neatly on your bike.

SUZUKI V-STROM 650 – Bruce Wilson
A lot changed with Suzuki’s post-2010 revamp of the 650 V-Strom. In fact, it was a whole new bike with dependable suspension, a comfy riding position and an engine with enough oomph to pull the skin off a banana – much unlike its predecessor. It’s quite pleasing on the eye and as far as all-rounders go, it most
certainly doesn’t look out of place, and it feels as good as it looks too. Swing a leg over the new shape VStrom and you’ll be hit by the bike’s noticeably high seat. Okay, so maybe I’m just a tad short at 5ft 9in, but that’s beside the point. The handlebars are taller and wider than their previous counterparts. Add to this setup the low mounted footpegs and you’ve got the perfect riding position.
It’s no surprise that the V-Strom’s smaller engine (650cc to 800cc) struggles to compete with the Tiger’s and Crossrunner’s head on, but it does a good job of delivering power at low revs, with a strong and usable midrange. Hit the back roads and you should have no worries about keeping up with much bigger bikes through the twisties, but I wouldn’t suggest this bike for straightline sprinting (obviously).
While this bike’s bottom end is strong, the upper part is merely revvy and slightly gutless. Two to six thousand revs is where you need to keep this bike singing, which thankfully you can do quite easily thanks to the commendable gearbox. It’s happy to be abused and offers a low ‘missed gears’ ratio. But as with most V-twins, anything below the magic two thousand revs is simply uncomfortable as the motor stumbles and the chain slaps. On a more positive note, this bike likes corners. Fast ones, slow ones and even those awkward ones that you often find in town riding. The V-Strom’s chassis seems fit for all purposes, but thrives particularly so at the slow speed stuff. In the bike’s redesign, the centre of gravity was worked on to produce a more agile performance and you can certainly feel that at work when you’re tootling. It links in with the new suspension to inform you of what the wheels are doing far before anything has chance to go a little wayward. And it’s probably that which has impressed me most. I can’t stress enough how much I detested the previous model’s lethargic setup, which simply struggled when you decided to load up the panniers and even suggested that you treat it like a tourer. It was ridiculously wallowy and there wasn’t a great deal you could do about it. The later bike, however, is a different story. I never actually felt the need to go fiddling, so I left the setup as it came from the factory. The only thing I needed to adjust on the bike was the span to the front brake lever. And that proved quick and easy enough to do. While the bike’s brakes aren’t exactly outstanding, they do a good job of hauling it up relatively quickly, even if the system does feel a little on the spongy side. Unfortunately, I often triggered the bike’s ABS unintentionally,

as I struggled to feel what was going on through the lever. In terms of comfort, the Suzuki scores well. The platform of good ergonomics is bolstered by the added comfort from the large, protective fairing, tall screen and hand guards. Little additions such as these display Suzuki’s intention to make its middleweight a capable package, a ‘contender’, if you like, in what is undoubtedly one of the most demanding areas of the UK bike market.

BMW F650GS – Nigel Hole
It was always going to be a tall order for the diminutive GS, living in the shadow of an older and far more successful sibling. This bike has the same moniker and cool ‘ugly’ styling that makes the GS range so unique but, to be quite frank, that’s where the genetic similarity ends. The riding position is nothing but pure comfort with everything in the cockpit within easy reach. The only complaint I would have is the indicator set up which has one button on the left, two on the right – one of them being to cancel the indicator. I think the only other manufacturer to do this is Harley-Davidson, but juggling the buttons takes a bit of thought. Oh, and one more very annoying thing, the BMW has an automatic indicator ‘cancel’, so it turns itself off seemingly randomly. Indicators aside, the 798cc parallel twin motor is far more gutsy that its predecessor the F650, which had a single-cylinder lump, so you get a smoother more refined ride. The engine pulls strongly but runs out of puff two thirds of the way around the rev counter. Overtaking takes more planning than with the other bikes here. Despite the quality of the engine, that lack of grunt that we tend to expect these days in any adventure bike leaves the 650 lacking. If you couple this underpowered engine to the three panniers, an adult pillion, fully loaded with luggage and fuel, I fear this GS will struggle all day and make hard work of your adventure. The standard spec on the F650 GS when it was new was minimal. You got a seat, handlebars, wheels and something to propel yourself forward with. However, most original purchasers spec’d their machines with
a few official BMW bits on, which made it an expensive choice compared to others. Fast progress on the motorway is hard work. Loaded panniers push the rear down into the ground, making the front shimmy. This isn’t helped by the relatively poor standard screen, which gives very little protection from the elements. Another point of note for the Beemer is the mirrors. I’m not the world’s largest chap but I struggled to get a decent view of the action behind me. It wasn’t so much the reach of the arms but rather the shape of the mirror and housing which left larger than average blind spots. The GS is fundamentally a road bike but the bike’s set up reflects a more offroad heritage. The braking capability is noticeable straight away in the amount of travel on the brake levers to haul the bike up. This is exacerbated by the compression of the forks which, again, are very softly sprung and tend to nosedive. This issue is highlighted as every other bike on this test runs twin front discs as opposed to the single front on the BMW and they have suspension that is fundamentally set up for everyday road use. Referring back to my comment about the power of the motor when fully laden, why an 800cc bike (although with 650cc power apparently) would carry a single front disc is beyond me. Surely it can’t have been a cost issue? I liken the GS to ‘my first bike’ and felt sure that after a day’s riding, it wouldn’t have the edge to keep me interested over the longer term. If BMW hadn’t called this a GS it would be all right. Instead it’s the connotation that this bike has the pedigree of its older brother when in reality it was just a ‘cheap’ BMW. I fear that when it comes to the F650 GS, many will buy the
badge first, the bike second and may well end up being left disappointed. I just didn’t find the qualities that I would have expected from BMW.
Although no longer in BMW’s line-up, there are better secondhand bikes than the 650GS for the same money... ❱ or less.

I think I must have struck pure gold, because this bike is right up my street. To be honest, I’m not quite ready to give up sportsbikes just yet, but a more comfortable compromise would do nicely – which is exactly where the Crossrunner seems to fit in. It’s as though someone’s taken your favourite supersport machine and put a huge pair of upright handlebars on it, just the ticket for someone like me I must say. No more backache or burning wrists after 50 miles, just a broad smile smacked across the face. It’s infectious and I didn’t want to swap it for any of the others during our test. I’d have quite happily just stayed on the Crossrunner, chuckling to myself as I ticked off another corner. And that’s where this bike’s in its element. The chassis is fantastic. It turns in super quick and plants a firm foot on the ground at all angles of lean. The back end feels good too. The roads we were travelling were really undulating and if anything was going to test this bike it was this route with sharp corner after sharp corner, making the most of the Crossrunner’s supportive Showa suspension. It worked like a dream and gave me a good chance to get to know the V4 motor while I was at it. That’s just as appealing. It picks up and fires off plenty quick enough, and things seem to get a whole lot more exciting once the revs crest 6000rpm. Like hitting a second wind, the motor ups its game and rushes forward again at a fair old rate of knots. At the same time the induction noise changes, acknowledging that the engine has entered V-Tec, and it doesn’t relent until you hit the limiter. Notch up another gear and it’s time to
go again, with unrelenting enthusiasm. From as low as 2200rpm, the V4 pulls well and lets the bike bimble about in traffic comfortably enough, should you need to. I’ll say the engine is a little vibey, but that’s not enough to put me off. It’s just the bike’s way of telling you where you are in the rev range if you don’t have the chance to glance at the bike’s floating dash – which I found a real asset. On so many bikes you need to spend what seems an eternity of glancing to find that crucial piece of info you’re after, but not on this bike. It’s all there in plain sight within the front dash. A gear indicator would have been a nice addition, but everything else you could wish for is on there in one digital form or another. Just as much as I like the dash, I love the bike’s looks. Enough curves and subtle lines to keep things visually interesting, while offering practical wind protection at the same time. Maybe the screen could do with being a little taller, but it does the job if you duck down slightly. However, if you’re after a genuine solution, I imagine you’d be able to find a more substantial option if you looked around for an aftermarket screen. This bike has masses of appeal. So much so, I’d actually buy one. It’s quirky, modern and very capable. I’d be just as happy to go touring on this bike as I would scratching, which goes to show the design concept’s versatility. The only place I wouldn’t want to venture on the Crossrunner is off-road, because it seems far too road focused for that kind of action. But then again, if I wanted to go offroad, I’d buy an off-roader. So that’s fixed that one. Hats off to Honda. This one’s a corker.

TRIUMPH TIGER 800 – Steve Rose
It’s easy to rave about Triumph’s Tiger 800, so I will. This bike has probably the best road engine of any motorcycle out there, one of the best chassis for all-round riding, enough comfort for most people’s normal riding and a price tag that makes you believe that motorcycling might just still be affordable. When the Crossrunner came out in 2011 I was convinced the Honda was my bike of the year. Now I’m not so sure. They’re surprisingly different machines. The Honda does long distance comfort, mpg and occasional sports bike craziness better than the Tiger, but the Triumph does engine flexibility, top gear roll ons and value-for money better than the Crossrunner. They are just about even on everything else. You’d be hard pushed to split them on handling or ride quality and both bikes could do with a little more weather protection and a quieter screen for long motorway journeys. The Honda is better built and has better brakes, but the Triumph has less intrusive ABS and is cheaper. On the Tiger, and as with most Triumphs, the fun starts almost immediately. One of the standout qualities of Triumph’s current range is that the bikes almost feel as if they’ve been developed specifically for you. Perfect fuelling, easy power deliveries and confident steering means you’re at home by mile three. And then it just gets better. Triumph’s 800cc engine might share much with the 675cc sportster, but has a completely different character. Where the 675 motor feels angry and revvy – urging you to go faster, the 800 engine is softer, but stronger. The result, though, is an engine which cruises
happily in top gear at 85mph and needs but a yank on the throttle to demolish traffic. The most effort you’ll ever need is a single down change. It’s a near perfect blend of torque and power that makes road riding an absolute pleasure. You’ll use more of the revs than the Honda or even the V-Strom, surprisingly, but that feels good on the Triumph. There’s always a choice of gears and the light clutch and precise gear change make it easy to choose. Bizarrely, it’s the unobtrusive brilliance of the Tiger that makes it so hard to write about. It’s one of those bikes which has few stand out characteristics so you just get on with the ride, unaware that everything you are asking it to do is just happening. Hinckley Triumphs have always handled well, but the Tiger’s chassis and suspension coped with everything thrown at it. Which comes back to that first point. It’s the ease with which the Tiger manages everything that makes it so bloody good. There are niggles of course. The popping and banging on a closed throttle sounds like something has come loose in the exhaust and the tail section needs some side panels to cover the scaffolding. A mate of mine rode a Tiger 700 miles to Cornwall and back last month and came back moaning about the chronically uncomfortable seat. My longest trip has been two-and-a-half hours in one go and I haven’t had a problem. Other niggles (for me at least) include Triumph’s latest instruments. The clock is too small to read easily and I can’t work out intuitively how to reset the trip meters or get to the information I want, which I know is in there. Make sure you get the manual if buying used. And finally, while I’m grumping, there’s the headlights (nowhere near as
good as the Honda’s) and the fuel consumption which ranges from okay (50mpg ridden carefully) to poor (38mpg in the Dales and rushing home). There are more thirsty bikes out there, but the BMW riding the same roads at the same speeds did 65mpg and 55mpg respectively.
Conclusion
Quite simply, we’re spoilt. Whoever you are and whatever roads you ride, there’s a middleweight all-rounder out there for you. And that’s what makes crowning an individual machine so tricky, because the choosing game is so subjective, dependent on your size, the miles you ride and the speed at which you wish to travel. The general consensus is we all like the Tiger 800. It was maybe a bit inevitable, but the Triumph just seems to tick more boxes than the others. It’s more versatile, more exciting and, depending on your point of view, probably the best looking too. And we haven’t even mentioned prices. New the Triumph is £7499 and you can get an early 2010 or 11 model for just under £5000. The Suzuki is cheaper, at £6899 (with ABS) new and the facelift model can be picked up secondhand for just a sniff over £4000, but it doesn’t feel quite as refined. Don’t get us wrong, it’s most certainly a great bike and undoubtedly the second best option to go for, but it loses out in the engine stakes to the Triumph. The Crossrunner is a close third. The bike itself is fantastic. A good engine with strong brakes and a chassis that is capable of tackling just about every kind of riding. But the £9200 new price ticket is the issue and you’ll struggle to find one secondhand. It’s so much more expensive than the rest of the competition and without any real
added benefits. The other big criticism is the position of the sporty footpegs, going against all that’s gained from the relaxingly mounted handlebars. And finally, there’s the BMW. A bit of a flop in this company. There are people out there who would love this bike in isolation, but not once they’ve swung a leg over the other options. With a really docile engine and a wallowy setup, its only real saving grace is fantastic fuel consumption, which can return 70mpg+. But even that, and the £4500 secondhand price are not enough to dig it out of fourth place.

18 Adventure Riding in the Pyrenees
Mountain mayhem
Words: Lois Pryce Photography: Lois Price, Austin Vince
Every summer a diverse collection of riders from all over the globe descend on the Spanish Pyrenees to take part in one of the world’s most unique motorcycle events
www.motorcyclemonthly.co.uk Known as the VINCE, one would think that it is simply named after its founder, motorcycle traveller and film-maker Austin Vince of Mondo Enduro fame, but in fact Austin is quick to point out that this mysteriously named race-that-isn’t-arace actually stands for the Very Interesting Navigation Challenge Event. It just so happens to spell out his surname. This might give you a whiff of the unusual nature of this annual event which was first held in 2005 and has since gone from strength to strength, attracting off-road riders in all their forms, ranging from regular trail-riders to global adventurers and even a handful of Dakar racers (and no, they didn’t win!). So, what is the VINCE all about? Put simply, it’s a combination of orienteering on dirt bikes and a good ol’ knees-up. About a month before the event each team is sent a detailed map of a section of the Catalan Pyrenees and a booklet with a list of checkpoints
This really is getting away from it all
that are spread over an area of 400 square miles. The aim of the game is to navigate your way around the stupendous mountain trails of the Pyrenees over two days, trying to find as many of these checkpoints as possible – treasure hunt style. If you really go for it, you can cover 200 miles a day off-road and never repeat an inch of your route. But most importantly, there is no GPS allowed – the VINCE is strictly analogue. Everyone stays in the same hotel and come the evening, the cerveza and sangria flow as the riders compare their day’s adventures and finally, on the last night, the winner is announced over a sumptuous three-course meal. Not a bad way to spend a couple of days in sunny Spain. According to Austin, the VINCE is an event for the ‘thinking dirt-biker’. Tired of the dog-eat-dog mentality of the enduro circuit, and wanting to capture some of the thrill of exploration that he had encountered on his round-theworld rides, he came up with the idea
Riding in the Pyrenees ADventure 19
www.motorcyclemonthly.co.uk for the VINCE as a result of many years trail-riding in the Pyrenees and is now regarded as the UK’s leading expert on the off-road routes in the region. “I was tired of competing in enduros where the more expert riders whizz up behind you tooting and shouting to get out of their way,” he explains. “So, I was inspired to create an event where the people who turned up actually ended up making friends with each other.” It is no surprise then, that the catchphrase surrounding the event is ‘If you want to win, you shouldn’t enter the VINCE.’ The event attracts a vast and varied array of machines, from the latest shiny adventure types such as BMW’s 1200GS as well as other big adventure bikes such as Transalps and Africa Twins to vintage 70s trail-bikes, 200cc two-strokes and everything in between – even a Ural sidecar outfit and a Honda C90 have made an appearance. But, as the event is less about speed and more about tactics and map-reading accuracy, it can be
said that it is truly possible to compete on pretty much any bike that has some off-road capability. Due to the popularity of the concept, Austin has now set up a sister event dedicated solely to vintage dirt-bikes called the Twinshock Trailfinder which this year saw an impressive range of classics make the long trip from the UK, ranging from 1960s Triumphs to 1970s XTs and a whole fleet of Armstrong MT army bikes. For the participant the appeal is more than just tearing around the mountain trails, although the riding is spectacular in itself. But a large part of the fun also comes from the planning and preparation which goes into it in the month running up to the event. If you’re the diligent type there is a sizeable amount of map-studying, head-scratching and military-precision planning, and although there’s no cash prize, a large proportion of the riders take it very seriously indeed, riding the full 12 hours each day. Each checkpoint carries a certain amount of
No GPS: Map and compass only means there’s plenty of this going on
points that are based on their distance from the hotel so each team must decide how best to visit as many checkpoints as possible to scoop up the maximum points without coming back late and incurring penalties, or heaven forfend, disqualification. If however, you lack the competitive urge, and prefer to start the day with a leisurely breakfast and then sample the delights of Spain’s fabled ‘menu del dia’ in a mountain restaurant, you can simply use the event as a unique way to ride some of Europe’s finest trails with the added bonus of some fun map-reading and the good-natured camaraderie among the attendees which makes the VINCE such a special experience. The other factor that people enjoy is often the ride down through France. Although some opt to fly out and rent a bike, or have their own bike taken out in a van, for many the ride to and from the Pyrenees is as much a part of the fun as the event itself, with plenty of the participants electing to stick around afterwards for more world-class trail-riding, turning the whole affair into a mini overland adventure. So, who are these map-reading, dirtbiking heroes who take the winning trophy at the VINCE? “They’re like human GPS units,” says Austin. “They have incredible navigation skills and are also excellent trail-riders, they can take care of a puncture at the side of the road, fix anything with a bodge and even keep riding with an injury!” So, are they all superhuman athletes on the latest fancy tricked-out KTMs? “No, not at all,” Austin insists. “Some of the most impressive results over the years have included a 63-year-old on a 250cc who won the event with a broken collarbone, a team of two women riders and a bunch of former couriers
from London.” But doesn’t leaving the GPS at home send the riders into a fit of nerves? “Not in the slightest,” says Austin with a twinkle in his eye. “The ones that would be scared by that are not the kind of people who would enjoy this event. It’s all about taking control of your destiny, not meekly following the next instruction from your TomTom. There’s something positively old-fashioned about the whole experience, and people are willing to drive 700 miles from the UK because of that, not in spite of it. It’s about the visceral experience of getting out in the wilderness and plotting your own course. You can’t beat it!” But are they allowed to use their GPS to make the journey from the UK? “Well, if they must,” says Austin reluctantly, and we’re not sure he’s joking.
Checkpoints look oh so innocuous on the map

20 ROUGH GUIDE Suspension tweaks and upgrades The Nitron Race shock offers a performance upgrade
Words: Ben Wilkins
Your bike’s suspension determines not just how your bike handles but how you feel the road. Tweaking, tuning or upgrading your suspension could be your route to attaining handling Nirvana. Boing... Boing... Boing... If this sounds like an impression of your bike as you head down the road then chances are the suspension could do with tweaking, fettling or possibly replacing. The addition of suspension to bikes was one of the major advances which affected both comfort and performance. While crude spring-only suspension started to appear on bikes before the First World War, monoshock suspension with a rising rate linkage as we know it today started to appear in the 1980s. As riders we demand more and more from our bikes, especially as our skill set improves.
The demands placed on a bike’s suspension are many. We might want to ride faster, or carry a pillion and luggage on a leisurely tour of Europe. Both of these activities require a different suspension setup to get the most out of a bike and the bike’s suspension could probably do with at least tweaking to get it working correctly for the kind of riding you do. From tweaking the adjusters away from the standard settings, to having them adjusted by a suspension specialist... through to replacing the fork internals or even the whole rear shock, there’s something out there to suit every budget. MCM guides you through the basics.
www.motorcyclemonthly.co.uk
FRONT SUSPENSION The front forks on your bike are pretty important. Not only do they hold the front wheel in place, isolate you from bumps on the road and provide your steering input, they also affect the feel of your bike over bumps as well as while cornering, accelerating and braking. Telescopic-style forks with hydraulic damping first appeared in the 1930s and 40s, but since the 1960s the telescopic fork is fundamentally unchanged. Sure, they’ve evolved hugely but they still work by having oil squeezed through holes to slow down the movement of the fork. Not all forks have the same adjustment capabilities. A budget machine might well have no means to adjust the spring preload or compression and rebound damping whereas a sports-oriented machine will most likely have all three.
Tweaks
Assuming your particular bike has adjusters on the forks for spring preload and compression and/or rebound damping then these are where to start. The owner’s manual is the place to begin and will tell you where the damping adjusters are and recommended settings. The first step is to see where your adjusters are compared with the recommended positions. If the settings are standard and you aren’t happy with the ride it gives you can try tweaking them (one setting at a time, otherwise you won’t know which has made the difference) to improve the ride. On most bikes, turning the adjusters clockwise will increase the damping force and anti-clockwise will decrease it. The spring preload adjusts how high the forks sit (static preload), the rebound damping (sometimes marked with a T – for Tension) determines how quickly the forks spring back after being compressed and the compression damping determines how quickly the forks compress.
If a setting can’t be found that suits then the next step would be to find a company to adjust the settings for you (see below).
Upgrades
If tweaks to the standard setup aren’t enough for you then the next steps involve upgrading the springs, oil and damping control internals, depending on how much you have to spend and the results you want to achieve. A simple fork service (approx £80 including parts and labour if you give the forks to your local dealer, £120 if they have to remove them) will often put life back into a set of forks but for the more demanding road rider or for serious track use something like K-Tech’s fork internals can offer a big improvement which range from £230 for new damping pistons to £840 for a cartridge kit. Of course you could really splurge out on a set of Öhlins Road & Track forks which will set you back a cool £1824... excluding VAT

REAR SUSPENSION Rear suspension units, or shocks, are what give a rider his or her ‘seat of the pants’ feel. Too hard and the bike will skip over bumps and give an uncomfortable ride which can make it feel like your kidneys have done a few rounds with Mike Tyson. Too soft and the back of the bike will wallow and weave, bouncing its way around corners. The theory is simple. As with the front forks, a spring gives you bounce to be compliant over bumps and adjusting oil flow in the shock controls how fast or slow the oil moves, so adjusting the damping and the way the bike reacts to the bumps. From the late-1980s and early 90s the rear suspension on most bikes has been adjustable for damping control as well as spring preload. The problem is it didn’t seem most manufacturers really trusted us to tweak it ourselves because there was often little difference between the
extremities of adjustment. Thankfully the majority of machinery from the late-90s onwards has a useful range of adjustment.
Tweaks
The first step along the trail for getting the rear shock to work for the kind of riding you prefer is to have a play with the adjusters. Just as with the front suspension (page opposite), the owner’s manual is a great place to start if you want to have a go at tweaking yourself. Most bikes are likely to have a preload and rebound (or tension) adjustment at the rear, and possibly a compression damping adjuster (most certainly on a modern sports bike). Once again, the manual will tell you which is which and it’s worth checking what the adjusters are currently set on; do this by turning each adjuster fully inwards, counting the clicks or turns as you go. If you bought your bike second-hand it’s likely that the adjusters may not be on the standard settings. Try the standard settings to see if you feel an improvement. If not, try a few clicks in either direction (making notes so that you know where you have ended up compared with where you started).
Upgrades
The standard rear shock on your bike may be able to be serviced with fresh oil and gas. This can be especially effective if your bike is more than a few years old as the oil put in when new is pretty cheap and nasty. Several companies offer this service and it can be a cost effective performance improvement – for example MCTechnics will service a shock for £107. If that’s not enough for you, or you want a greater range of adjustment than the original unit can provide, then the next step could be replacement with an aftermarket suspension unit. The greater the range of damping adjustment and the more resistance to fade under hard riding (or track riding) a unit has, the more you will pay. Prices range hugely from just under £300 for a Hagon monoshock through to £695 for a top of the range Nitron three-way damping adjustable race unit or more if you want to get really fancy. ❱

CONTACTS
SET-UP SERVICES Adjusting the damping on your bike’s forks or rear shock yourself can be a tad daunting if you’ve not done it before, but there are suspension gurus out there who’ll happily tweak it for you. You’ll often find set-up technicians at most track days but there are companies such as Aprilia Performance near Birmingham which will tweak your suspension (on any make of bike) to get the best out of it, which can take the guesswork out of doing it yourself.
THINGS TO CONSIDER What do you want to achieve?
Ask yourself just what you want to get out of any modifications or tweaks. If you’re riding on the road and just want to improve the ride quality or add a little composure on the brakes then chances are this can be done with simple tweaking of your suspension’s adjustment settings. However, if you’re a regular track day rider or racer for whom every tenth of a second counts then your needs will be very different – as will the cost (see right). Be realistic, if you can achieve the ride you want with the adjustment on your current suspension, there’s no need to spend hundreds or thousands on aftermarket suspension units. But if you want the bling, that’s a different matter...
What’s your budget?
How much money you have to spend makes a big difference to what you can get in terms of suspension. A simple refresh of the oil may be all that’s needed to bring things back to where they should be – and that’s about as cheap as it gets. On the other hand you can spend many thousands of pounds if you’re after a new rear shock and front forks. There’s something for everyone depending on how much you’re prepared to spend.
Fitment
If you’ve decided you need, or want, a service or new rear shock or forks then who’s going to fit them? If you don’t have a good set of tools, front or rear stands – not to mention the appropriate skills – then you’ll need to factor in somebody to fit them. Obviously, removing and replacing your suspension shouldn’t be attempted if you don’t know what you’re doing – go have them fitted by an expert.

Fowlers Words: Steve Rose Photos: Joe Dick
Who are Fowlers?
of Bristol
LET’s play fantasy motorcycling. You’ve just come into some cash and you fancy giving up the office slog and starting a bike shop. Running your own bike shop has got to be among our top 10 male fantasies (we’ll leave the other nine up to your imagination). Hot and cold running Fireblades and BMW GSs, a stream of interesting partexchanges and the chance to read Motor Cycle Monthly before anyone else. Sounds idyllic, but first you’ll need some guidance. We spoke to Steve Phillips from Fowlers in Bristol – one of the longest running and most successful dealers in Europe. When Steve speaks, the trade listens. So getting advice on running a bike shop from this man is like Alex Ferguson turning up to coach your son’s school football team.
Ensure that you understand the market implicitly
“Unless you’re going to be specialising, don’t be guided simply by what you like. Look at the market, identify what’s selling and what isn’t and make sure your shop stocks what the public wants. Not just in bikes, but clothing also. That £2000 Moto GP replica airbag suit might look wonderful in the showroom, but if your customers want £80 textile jackets, that’s what you need to sell.”
Think about how your showroom will be laid out
“Right now the growth in the motorcycle market is small bikes and
scooters. The people who buy these aren’t always dyed-in-the-wool riders and they might find a bike shop intimidating. These riders are coming to biking to save money and time so the last thing they need is to be presented with a row of £11,000 hyperbikes as soon as they walk in the door. “At Fowlers we put the scooters and commuters at the front of the shop. Friendly bikes with friendly price tags to welcome the new riders in. The next thing they come across is our clothing section; a huge selection with something to suit every imaginable budget. And there’s a lifestyle clothing section too – Oakley and Vespa T-shirts and accessories to make these new riders feel extra welcome. “The main bike showroom is upstairs. We have a huge premises with most of the popular franchises under one roof and a separate Honda showroom across the way, but the layout is still important. Right now we are giving the Triumph range extra room because sales are so strong.”
Make your shop a destination
“Give people a reason to come. Maybe put a burger van in the car park, or even just a drinks machine. We’ve got a fullblown cafe on our top floor, but we started with a burger van and that encourages riders to stay a while. It’s nice to have a handful of interesting older bikes for people to look at too. Right now, we’ve got a Honda RC30 for sale, a Suzuki
RGV250 in Lucky Strike colours and a lovely Yamaha RD250LC. We run a massive fleet of demonstrators too so people can come along to try a bike out.”
Don’t be afraid to invest
“Pick the things you can be really good at and make sure you do them well. Our spares business is the biggest in the UK. We’ve spent almost a quarter of a million pounds on three parts distribution machines that allow us to retrieve a component from the 53,000 separate items we have in stock in just seconds. We can get just about anything for any of the franchises we carry by the next day. And we can get it for bikes going back to the 1970s. In many cases you can buy a genuine, brand new part from us for less than a rusty used one on eBay and we can still get brand new spares for the grey import machines too.”
Don’t be afraid to make some seriously tough decisions
“Fowlers has been going since 1926 and we’ve changed immensely over that time but it’s still a family business, run by the Fowlers. In the late 1990s we expanded very quickly, buying up

other bike shops and building some others. It was the era of the huge trading groups – Motorcycle City and Carnell were our main rivals. “But we realised it wasn’t working. Having 11 stores made it harder to maintain standards and manage the business tightly. Some were profitable, others less so. “We made the decision to get out and sold the satellite shops to concentrate on expanding the mothership in Bristol. Shortly afterwards, the other two giants crashed, while we have continued growing. We are able to employ more than 150 people at our premises in Bristol.”
Enjoy the challenges faced as well as the good times
“There’s no point being miserable when the market gets tough. These are the times when you have to adapt. Dropping prices and running scared never works – much better to get out there and find out what the market actually wants and then make sure you deliver it. Whether it’s the bikes you sell or the clothing and accessories you stock, the key is to get people into the showroom
Fowlers of Bristol started as many did by selling bicycles, before Harry Fowler (son of the owners Frank and Alice) introduced powered two wheelers in the late 1920s. The company moved to its current premises in 1982 cramming bikes and spares into the one (admittedly, huge) building for a while, before expanding outwards to now occupy most of the adjacent industrial estate too. With 10 manufacturer franchises, there are a lot of bikes crammed in there and the spares operation carries parts for all those makes and more too. In addition, Fowlers handles spares supply for many independent dealers. and then engage them and make them feel good about bikes while they are there. “Make sure you have little things to sell as well as the big things. A fiver here on a cargo net, a tenner there on some neckwarmers make a big difference come Friday.”
Make your service stand out and be memorable
“We’ve got a guy in our workshop whose main job is to clean the bikes we service. So when the customer gets his bike back, it is clean and feeling like new again which reflects the care that’s gone into the job.”

Specialist motoring solicitor and rider Andrew ‘Chef’ Prendergast deals with a few interesting riding dilemas... Spotty yoof parking
Q
A few days ago I took my Yamaha R1 to a bike dealer to have some work done. I had asked him to order in a carbon-fibre mudguard and dropped the bike off as arranged. I left my bike on the dealer’s forecourt and gave him the keys. As I was there I decided to take out the new Fireblade demonstrator bike. An hour later the dealer called and said some spotty kid driving a Corsa had knocked my bike over while it was stood on the forecourt. I went back and saw the bike had damage to the fairing. The dealer had the details of the muppet driver who reversed into my bike and said it was down to me to claim on my insurance or against the muppet kid. I disagreed and said that as the bike was in his care and control it was down to him to sort it out. I also said the work I had originally asked him to do would have to wait until the repairs were done. Could you please tell me if this is correct? The dealer was not happy but has since told his own insurer to pursue the muppet kid and says he will fix my bike. In the circumstances do I have to tell my own insurer? The cost of repairs is less than the excesses on my policy so I don’t want to risk my no claims bonus. Lastly, the dealer says I must have the work I originally booked in because I specifically got him to order the carbon fibre front mudguard and this was a special order and cannot be returned. I did not know this before and there is nothing in writing.
A
Firstly, as your bike was in the dealer’s care, he ‘prima facie’ has a duty to fix any damage sustained to your bike during this period, even where Mr Young Corsa Driver reverses into it. Further, it follows the dealer or his insurer can pursue the lad who did not see your ‘invisible’ R1. As he is fixing the bike I wouldn’t let it trouble you too much.
As for your question: “In the circumstances do I have to tell my own insurer?” I suspect the answer is yes. In short you need to check your insurance policy as it is usual that you have to report all accidents and failure to do so will be in breach of the terms. Breaching the terms of the policy could result in invalidating the policy, even if you are not claiming. You should note that if you are not claiming because the dealer is fixing the damage it will not affect your no claims bonus. With regards to the work you had booked in, if you had an oral contract for the bike to undergo work and the dealer has purchased special parts then I am of the opinion you are liable for the cost of those parts. In addition, even if you have no such agreement, the convenience of obtaining the repairs from the dealer to the damage sustained instead of having to claim off your insurance or the negligent driver may be a whole load easier if you let the dealer undertake the work you originally organised to have performed. This is not a legal point, but merely a practical solution. After all, if Mr Young Corsa Driver had not knocked over your bike, the dealer would have done the work as planned and you would have had to pay for it.
Testing times
Q
I am new to biking and was on my way to the test centre for my full bike test. My instructor was in front and I lost sight of him. However, as we were using radios he told me to exit off the roundabout using the second exit and accelerate up the hill. I followed his instructions but as I accelerated I noticed a dead hedgehog on the road. I only looked down for a moment to avoid the new ‘road rug’ but I lost control and hit a lamppost. I have broken both my wrists and I am roofer. Who can I sue for my losses? My instructor? He must have public liability insurance. If I can’t work I can’t pay the rent.
A
The instructor is not going to be held liable for this accident. While you have suffered serious injuries (and I wish you a speedy recovery) no one else was at fault. As such, if no one else is negligent there is no one to bring a claim against. Bikes are fun but they hurt when you fall off them. I know, I have fallen off. While it sounds harsh, if it was your fault, tough luck. I liken it to jumping out of a plane with a parachute that you packed wrongly and does not open. It’s not the pilot’s fault who told you it was clear to jump. In short you have to take responsibility for your own actions. You can’t just sue someone because you have been unlucky.

28 second-hand bike buying guide 2007-on Honda CB600F Hornet
www.motorcyclemonthly.co.uk
The original Honda Hornet theory was simple – a CBR600F engine in a naked street bike. The result, a sales revelation. The 2007 complete redesign brought it bang up to date. Words: Ben Wilkins Photography: Honda When the CB600F Hornet was launched in 1998 it was a revelation – just what the bike buying public had been asking for. Sports bikes are all well and good but most people don’t ride on a race track and don’t want to be hunched over with their knees tucked up under their arms. Honda’s Hornet took the sports-derived engine out of its nicely potent CBR600F and wrapped a naked road bike around it. The bike buying public and the magazines alike were enraptured. Few had anything bad to say about the concept or indeed the machine in practise. By 2006 the bike was becoming a little long in the tooth, so Honda made a completely new one but still called it the Hornet. Using the motor out of the, then new, 2007 CBR600RR and revamping it for non-sports use Honda built a new chassis around it. That’s the Hornet concept all over again and the company did the name proud because the new Hornet is just as comfortable commuting to work as it is scratching the back lanes. Engine: The original Hornet featured a CBR600F engine shoehorned into a new chassis for 1998. However, for the 2007 redesign the bike gained the more powerful and far higher revving CBR600RR motor. Honda subjected the motor to a retune, so don’t expect the full 107bhp of the early RR, giving a more tractable midrange motor with a top whack of 83bhp. The engine still has the revvy nature of the RR, with a healthy kick at 10,000rpm. It is pretty flexible at low to medium revs but it responds best to a good thrashing. Real power starts to come in at 7000rpm but it’s once the revs reach 10,000 that you see the CBR heritage. Fuel economy isn’t bad at all with 38mpg from spirited riding on A- and B-roads and 45mpg or so on motorway runs. Handling: While the forks are upside-down in style there’s no adjustment, not even spring preload. The same goes for the rear shock but that does at least have spring preload. It might sound like the lack of adjustability would be an issue but Honda got the suspension bang on. It’s on the comfortable side of soft but it’s well damped, removing bumps and road vibration. The great thing is it’s good for light and heavier riders alike.
Cast aluminium frame and swingarm are taut and 25° steering angle keeps handling nimble and in keeping with the street naked styling – great for nipping in and out of traffic or blasting down B-roads. ABS version comes with three piston front calipers and standard bike with two-piston versions. Both work well and give predictable stopping power (first Hornets were criticised for poor brakes and there’s no such issue here). Ride: For a naked bike the clock binnacle does a surprisingly good job of keeping the wind off. It’s not like having a screen but up to 90mph it’s pretty good. The riding position is comfy enough to be able to do some distance and it’s still agile enough for commuting. The ride is nimble but predictable, just what you might expect from a Honda. Scratching at the weekends (should that be your thing) is a joy, especially when you get the opportunity to wind the engine up and let it have its head. Accommodation for the pillion is pretty good too and doesn’t hamper riding (be sure to turn up the preload though). Equipment: Twin grab rails either side of the pillion seat give them something to hold on to. There’s not a whole lot of room under the seat but Honda has moulded a U-lock holder into the undertray for ease of security (with its own U-locks). As for the rider, there are twin trip meters, fuel gauge, dial-type rev-counter, digital speed readout which can be changed from MPH to KPH, span adjustable brake lever (but not clutch lever) and Honda’s HISS immobiliser system. Finish: As Hondas go, the Hornet isn’t bad at all especially the later machines. If an owner has looked after the bike it’ll show. The fork stanchions on early bikes always seem to have a lot of stone chips in the paint but that’s as much a factor of age as anything else. The paint on the rest of the bike is deep and shiny. Model history: 1998 CB600F Hornet launched with CBR600F engine, 16in front wheel, 16 litre tank and underseat exhaust. 2000 17in front wheel and faired Hornet introduced. 2003 Major update with new bodywork, clocks, HISS immobiliser, 17 litre tank and upgraded brakes.
2005 Interim update with usd forks and new clocks. 2007 New bike with bodywork, clocks, brakes, CBR600RR engine, fuel-injection, underslung exhaust and 19 litre tank. What to check: Very little goes wrong with these bikes. Early models occasionally have camchain tensioner or regulator/rectifier issues but they’re uncommon and pretty cheaply fixed. Pre-2007 Hornets have their own race series, so make sure you’re not getting a thrashed ex-racer with the road bodywork put back on. Look for unusual amount of wear on parts which don’t normally wear, think scraped forks, swingarm, frame etc. Main issues you’re like to encounter are down to maintenance neglect by owners – have the shock linkages been greased? Check the chain, tyres, brake pads etc. Three overall pros: Competent all-round package, powerful engine, great handling. Three overall cons: No centrestand, non-adjustable suspension, revvy engine. Value for money: Many owners fit huggers to keep the rear shock clean and the ABS-version is worth seeking out. See if you can get a paddock stand thrown in with the bike as there’s no centrestand for chain maintenance. £3000 will get you a good 2007 update model, and pre-2007 machines can be had extremely cheaply if you’re on a tight budget. Servicing/maintenance: Services are every 4000 miles and alternate between minor, intermediate, minor and major (valve clearances). Insurance: Lexham Insurance quotes the following on a 2008 Honda CB600F Hornet: 25-year-old in Derby (Riding for three years, three years no claims) TPF&T: £307.76 (£400 excess) Fully comprehensive: £468.03 (£400 excess) 42-year-old in London (three points for speeding), riding 15 years, nine years no claims TPF&T: £189.52 (£350 excess) Comp: £297.54 (£350 excess)

return to historic
Pendine Sands Motorcycles have once again scorched along the sevenmile expanse of Pendine Sands in Wales. The last time motorcycles were used in anger on the historic Pendine quicksand was for the Welsh TT of 1927. Famous for land speed record attempts by Malcom Campbell, bikes have made a welcome return.
For anyone with an interest in land speed records, the beach’s history is neatly encapsulated within the world’s only museum of speed which sits a stone’s throw from the golden sands where so much land speed history has been created over the last 100 years or so. Perhaps the most famous speedster to grace the sands was Malcolm Campbell of ‘Blue Bird’ fame. In September 1924 Campbell set a world land speed record of 146.16mph at Pendine Sands with his Sunbeam 350hp and set yet another in 1927 of 174.22mph in the infamous Blue Bird. That was more than a lifetime ago.
The sprinter PJ wasn’t just the event organiser, his wealth of experience racing at Bonneville on a 1980 GSX1100-based bike meant his input in to the course was vital. The Bonneville bike that’s called ‘Bonneville’ is now sadly retired after discovering the frame had several cracks in it, so PJ dug another of his stash of air-cooled Suzukis out for Pendine. “It hadn’t been used for donkey’s years, so Dave Dunlop had a look at it and we got it going again. The EFE-based machine is far from stock and along with a monster capacity it now sports a turbo too.” Proof that even the most seasoned pro can have a mishap, the strap used to tow the bikes back to the pit area managed to snag in the front wheel resulting in PJ falling off, thankfully at only around 20mph and not the 100mph plus of his run, PJ laughed and said it “gave the crowd a smile”. Pendine has been under MoD ownership since the Second World War and is rarely given public vehicle usage. The reason there’s an event at all is down to one man and his passion for land speed racing. PJ got the bug for land speed events after visiting the Bonneville salt flats in the USA, first to spectate but later to return and race. The antics of PJ and his friends were captured by the BBC earlier this year in their excellent series Speed Dreams. MCM caught up with PJ on the Saturday morning in race control – well an exmilitary truck with an awning on the side – where he explained how it all came about, “I had heard of Pendine Sands but never visited the place until October last year. I was on a rideout with some other lads from the Indian Owners Club. The idea to get bikes back here came to me and wouldn’t leave, so I made some enquires
Speed trial organiser ‘PJ’ and discovered the MoD own the beach, it’s used for training etc. Securing the beach was just one part of the jigsaw, from then until now it’s taken my full attention to get the event live.” The first bike event to be held on the sands for 86 years ran over the weekend of June 21-22. PJ explained the timetable: “Friday was a set up and shakedown day. The main problem with racing on a beach is if it’s not 100% dry there will obviously be issues. Saturday’s event was cut short, not by the rain but by the wind, it was so strong it played havoc with the timing lights. The local landlords were happy though, they had their best takings for a single weekend in almost 10 years!” The event was open to pre-1990 machines only. Some bikes were legends with racing pedigree, like the Vincent streamliner, while others had been cobbled together just for the event. There was a smattering of everything from Brough Superior and Vincent based racers right through to Japanese road bikes, there were even some Triumph Bonnevilles entered. Mechanical backup ranged from teams with half a dozen pit crew and Snap On cabinets to one

Fastest man and machine Robert Bean from Lincolnshire arrived with a Turbo powered GSX-R Spondon which wore gearing suitable for hitting 220mph. We reminded Rob it was a beach based event, to which he replied: “I know.” Robert usually races his bike in the man bands with biscuit tins of mismatched spanners and spare bolts. The social side was fantastic, everyone was there to enjoy the event; even when it rained the entrants sat patiently on the soggy sands chatting to each other in true homage to the glory days of the venue. Even once dry enough to continue the moisture, though apparent on the surface of the sand, wasn’t too far away. The course consisted of a kilometre to get up to speed, two kilometres where the rider could tuck in and get his speed on and a run off area for the pilot to slow down. However, this area quickly deteriorated due to the bikes braking from their runs and after a handful of runs this lead to the course being shortened. Fortunately this gave the spectators a chance to get close to the bikes queuing on the beach. Where else could you see such a variety of machines and people was one observation I overheard. Being pre1990 there were quite a few Japanesebased bikes, including a Yamaha RD350YPVS which unfortunately developed a poorly engine and had to retire from the event before having a serious run. There were also plenty of specials with four-cylinder machines shoe-horned into various frames; many of them home fabricated. There were so many personal goals achieved by competitors over the
UK Thunderbikes series, but noticed the event allows the use of a turbo, so he fitted one to his bike. Robert built the bike himself and was keen to get a good time in. On a blustery run he hit 140.1mph, which was the fastest time of the weekend. course of the weekend; MCM’s favourite was a chap from Kent who’d built a bike around a Panther single motor which involved the use of a Rover V8 piston and some XS250 forks and wheels that were gifted to him. Even better, he’d never raced before but due to losing his wife earlier this year had decided to do this event in tribute to her memory, he even painted the frame in her favourite colour, purple! The fastest run of the day belonged to Robert Bean from Lincolnshire who clocked 140.1mph on his Spondon GSX-R1100 Turbo. There is talk of Pendine Sands Speed Trials 2 or #PSST2 for the Social media savvy among you. Having observed the weekend’s racing I left thinking that this event didn’t just visit the historical sands of Pendine, it added to it. If the event is run next year, you owe it to yourself to go and take a look.
THANKS
The guys behind the event would like to thank the marshals and course crew, because without them it would never have been possible.

Streamliners made a welcome return to Pendine
The road rider Brian Gaskin heard of the event around the same time he’d decided to build himself a GSX-R7/11. Brian, from Derbyshire, bought a complete GSXR1100M and a GSX-R750J and morphed the two together: “I wanted to build a cheap track and road bike. After it was finished I sold off all the left over parts.” Brian had his wife Hayley acting as pit crew. When she was promised a weekend by the coast, she didn’t quite realise what Brian really meant! Proof that old romantics still exist.
Large and small the event catered for everyone
Team Llanelli
Some local lads from Llanelli heard about the event less then three months ago, but managed to build a bike in less than 12 weeks. The engine is a Kawasaki GPz1100B1 unit last used over six years ago, the frame was built in a shed and despite discovering the fuel injection setup didn’t want to work on Saturday, the guys spent Saturday evening ditching it and fitting some Mikuni flatslides they’d managed to borrow. They were the first out the traps on Sunday and did a 124mph run on the unknown quantity of a bike. Last minute maybe but impressive.

IF looks aren’t important, but learnerlegal reliable transport and 90mpg are high on your list of priorities, the novice-friendly Yamaha YBR 125 might just be the ideal commuter bike for you. The YBR is built to provide a no frills basic motorcycling experience from an established name you can trust.
Engine
Five speed, air-cooled, fuel injected four-stroke single cylinder. Earlier (2005-2009) models made 12bhp, but power went down to 10bhp in 2010.
Handling & Ride
Although the bike is built for commuting, it’s also relatively light, easy to manoeuvre and handles surprisingly well. The YBR makes good use of its single front disc/rear drum brakes so stopping isn’t an issue – but the OE tyres are worth replacing for some better rubber when tread gets low. The little Yamaha has decent enough suspension and a low centre of gravity helps it to handle quite well too.
Equipment
You get a comfortable seat, rear carrier, centrestand and an analogue speedo, fuel gauge and rev counter.

36 COMPETITION Keis heated kit giveaway
www.motorcyclemonthly.co.uk
WIN one of six Keis X20
Hi Powered Body-warmers Last autumn was the coldest since 1993, so if you’re planning to extend your riding beyond the summer you’ll either need to wrap up well or invest in some heated clothing.
Enter free online at:
Here at MCM we’ve teamed up with leading specialist manufacturer Keis to offer six lucky readers a chance to win one of the company’s latest X20 bodywarmers, each worth £145.
Light, thin and comfortable, heated clothing provides controllable heat and cuts down on the number of layers required in cold conditions. The allnew X20 Hi Powered Bodywarmer from Keis delivers double the output of their basic X10 model and has a heated collar too. Made from breathable lightweight soft-shell fabric with elasticated side panels, the X20 has strategically positioned Micro Alloy Element Technology panels on the chest, kidneys and collar. Typical power output is 40W, yet current draw is just 3.3A, so the X20 can easily be powered from a 12v source on the motorcycle. The X20 is available in sizes 2XS to 3XL and can even be hand-washed and drip-dried. Inside the X20 is a power distribution system to supply any additional garments, such as heated gloves or trousers, which helps to reduce the number of cables required and there is also a zipped pocket to store the controller.
www.motorcyclemonthly.co.uk
XTo stand a chance of winning, simply answer this question:
Question: For how long has the Keis team been involved
in the design and manufacture of heated clothing? A) 13 years B) 31 years C) 30 years
(Handy hint – you’ll find the answer at www.keisapparel.co.uk )
Six lucky winners will be drawn from all correct entries received by the closing date specified. Full terms and conditions can also be found on the MCM website. There are no cash alternatives. Each winner will receive a X20 bodywarmer worth £145. Closing date: October 4th, 2013
