Bothwomenhaveakeen interestinsocialhistory andtransport,withSarah volunteeringatCrichTramway Villagesinceshewas17years old,becomingaconductorat18 andgoingontobecomeatram driverin2001.Asaresult,Sarah passedonherenthusiasmto Rebecca,whohasbeenvisiting themuseumsinceshewasfive weeksold.

WhileRebeccaisabout tobeginanAppliedScience courseatcollegeinSeptember, SarahcreditsCrichTramway Villagewithgivinghermany lessonsinlife.
Sarahcommented: ‘Those whoknewmeatthestartwill confirmthatIwasaquiet,shy andinnocentyounggirland Ispentmanyeveningsinthe Cliffpubhavingagreattime withtheothervolunteers. Ihavemademanylifelong friendswhorememberthe tramsinthecitiesandpassed onsomegreatstories.Sadly, manyofthemhavepassed awayorareinillhealth,butI hopeIcanpasssomeofthese storiesontootherpeople.Itis greattoseesomanyyounger peoplebeinginterestedin tramsandourmuseum,and startingthesamejourneythatI didnearly30yearsago.

TheInternationalModel LocomotiveEf ciency Competition(IMLEC)is anannualcontestthatmoves betweennumeroushost societies,beingsupported andsponsoredbythe Model Engineer magazinesinceitwas rstheldin1969.
With2023beingthe50th anniversaryoftheopeningof theirraisedtrackatAshton CourtEstateinBristolbythe BristolSMEE,societypresident BernardNorthofferedthe servicesofthesocietyto hostIMLECaspartofour celebrations,the rstoccasion since2009.Inthat14years manyfaceshavechanged withinthesociety,sotherewas afairamountoftrainingtodo.
WenoticedthatMaidstone societyhadchosentouse
adigitalscoreboard,so consideredthatifsimilar contentwasalsoavailable tomobiledevices,this couldenhancespectators’ participation,soadopted thatapproachforour event.Furthermore,ourold ‘mechanical’dynamometercar hadlongsincebeenscrapped andanewdynamometercar couldbebuiltusingtheTKP loadcellmeasuringunit,which addedtotheattraction.
Withoursocietysecretary enforcingourGDPR obligations,Ibecamethemain contactforcompetitorsand applicationsandforthemost partinteractionwasdoneusing email,whichavoidedthepostal servicewhichattimeswas unreliableduringtheearlypart oftheyear.
IMLECcanbeslightly Marmite-whilstsomecan’t seethefuninit,othersare avidfans,andmanyfollow thecompetitionaroundyear onyear.Theeventisalsoa reallygoodsocialoccasion,a chancetochatandlearnfrom others,makenewfriendsas wellaswatchsomeamazing competitiveruns.Confounding thefewIMLECdoom-mongers, wehadnotrouble llingthe33 runslots,choosingnottoallow ourownmemberstoenterbut keepingthembackasreserves. Forthosemakingtheeffortto attendoneormoredays,we wantedtoensuretherewasa suf cientlyfulldayofactionto maketheirjourneyworthwhile.
Itwasslightlyambitious,but notthe rsttimeaclubhas hostedthatmanyruns,andwe

fullyrehearsedthetimingsfor thechangeoverofcarriages toensureitwasachievable. Wealsoheldaninternal clubcompetitiontoactasa training/provingsessionfrom whichwelearntagreatdeal.
Oncetheclosingdate passed,therunswereallocated beingsympathetictotravelling distanceandindividual needsanditwasnicethat wewerecomplimentedinthe varietyoftheline-upandthe competitorsequence.Wewere alsopleasedtoproducea comprehensive32-pagecolour programmefortheevent.
CompetitionDay1–Friday
Youcouldn’thaveaskedfor abetterstarttotheday,dry andsunny,butat7:30amit wasalreadyhot.Althoughwe arrivedonsitewellaheadof thestartingtime,competitors andspectatorswerealso arrivingearlybutourreception areawasreadytogreetpeople. Fortunately,wewereable toofferhotfoodandsnacks fromabout10o’clockand manybaconsandwiches wereconsumed,including byourownvolunteers. Severalmembersdedicated themselvestothepreparation ofhotfoodwithallthe proceedsgoingtoalocal Scoutsgroup.However,the ‘weekend’sworth’ofsupply hadbeeneatenbytheendof Friday,somoresupplieswere bought,thesamehappening afterSaturday.
Gettingaheadofthedriver demand,ourcoalteamwas alreadysiftingnewbagsof coaltoremovesmallpieces anddust,thengradeditinto appropriatesizesfor3½ or 5inchgaugelocomotives. Withinourrankswehavetwo ex-professionalswhoworkedin handlingcoalimportsandthey cameequippedwithprecision scalebalances.
Fridayistraditionallya quieterdaywithmanytravelling butmanyIMLECfansinclude theeventasamini-holidayand wewerepleasedatthenumber ofspectatorsaccumulating. Wehadsetamid-daystart,but the rstcompetitorwithdrew
severaldaysbefore,sowe broughtthesecondrunner forwardby15minutes.
FortheBristolIMLECevent, thedirectionisreversed fromnormalrunning.After connectingtrolleysatthe traverser,thetrainrunsa
shorthoptothestationfor passengerloading.Thestart pointisverydeliberately positionedonthedownhill sidetoassisttrainstoget awaycleanly.Thatcan encouragesometobeslightly overambitiouswiththeir
passengersthough,asthere aretwoascentsthatcancatch outoverloadedtrains.
Onthetrack,herearethe runsinsequence.

So, rstonthetrackwasRoger HopkinsfromNottingham SMEE,whogotthedayoffto a nestart.His3½ inchgauge Derby4Fsetoffinthebright sunandalready23degrees. Withfourpassengersin additiontothedynamometer car,hehappilyranlapafterlap withaveryconsistentdrive, covering9lapsinjustover36 minutes.Theobservernoted hehadmadeagoodrun, whileusing0.815lbofcoal, andthiswasagreatstartto proceedings.

NexttolightupwasNickFeast fromBournemouth&District SMEwithhis3½ inchgauge SouthernRailwayQ1.Thesame locomotivehadvaliantlybattled inthepreviousyear’scontest, sohopeswerehigh.The locomotiveisnottoodissimilar insizetothe4FandagainNick gotawaywell,alsotakingfour passengers.Butaftersome reallygoodlaps,hestoppedon lap7toregainpressure.Aftera goodattempttoclimbthebank tothestation,sadlyhestopped shortofthe nishlineand,in afurtherattemptatablowup,ranovertheallowedeight minutesofstop-timeandhad toretire.Nevertheless,avery creditablerunforamedium sizelocomotive.

NextwasDavidShepheard fromtheBracknellsocietywith hisPolly3.ThisPollyisaround 20yearsoldandwasalso enteredinlastyear’scontest atGuildford.His2:15pmrun startedinbrighthotsunwith twopassengers.Although makingsteadyprogress, Davidranoutofsteamatthe bottomoftheclimbupto thetunnel,whilealso nding hisinjectorrefusedtowork. Afterachieving4½ laps,he alsoexceededthemaximum allowedstoptime,forcinga retirement.

SMEE.AlthoughPeterhadn’t competedinanumberof years,his3½ inchgauge Betty RiverDarenth was beautifullypreparedandthe greenpaintwasstrikinginthe brightsunshine.Peterandhis locomotivegaveaveryspirited runwithatrolleyoffour passengers.Takingonwater viabottlesinlaps3,7and10, andcompleting12lapsinjust under28minutes,whileusing 1.405lbofcoal,Peterachieved averycommendablerun.

Ourpenultimaterunofthe rst daywasfromAndyHealey fromGravesendMM&ES. AlthoughowningaBritannia himself,hewasrunningthe Britanniapreviouslyentered byhisnephewKarlMidgeley,a regularIMLECcompetitorwho sadlypassedawaytwoyears agofromCovid-19,sothisrun wasatributetoKarl.

blue,AndytooktheBritannia Apollo outforanear flawless runwithsixpassengers, completing14lapswithno stoppages.Theobserver notedthatthiswasa‘great run’,whichconsumed2.45lb ofcoal,Andycompletinghis runin31:55minutes.Itwas becomingclearthatratherthan runningtojust25minutes, driverswhoweredoingwell wereintentonusingevery secondtheycould.

Alanhadbuiltthistothedesign ofafellowmemberofhis societyanditwasverynicely presentedtoo,settingoffwith aseeminglyambitiousload foran0-4-0,of12passengers acrossthreecarriages.Well, anyconcernswereunfounded andthislocomotivejust seemedtorompaway,and poweredupthegradientswith aplomb,evenpickingupa speedingmarkonlap10.
But,havingdecidedtorun intothe30-minutezone,onlap 11Alanstalledontheclimbto thetunnel,andovertheradio weheardhowhewasstruggling toraisepressure.Itwasstarting togetabitnailbitingwhen, breakingtheradiosilence,we heardthathewasdroppinghis passengersandtryingtoget home.Suddenly,thelocomotive seemedtoburstoutofthe tunnelandgunnedittowards the nishline,asalleyeswere intently xedontherunclock. Toatremendousamountof cheering,Alanpassedthe nish linewithalittleover5seconds togo.Thatwasaclosecalland athrillingendtoour rstday. Coalusageforthisexhilarating runwas3.455lb.
Ithadbeenahotdaybutour volunteershadstoodupwellto thechallenge.Ithinkwewere allpleasedathowthedayhad cometogether.Sohowwouldit goonday2…?

Thetwopiecesofthe crossheadwerethenmounted inasimpleplatejigtoalignthe
‘tee’andacollarwasplaced inthethroattomaintainthe positionofthe‘tee’.Before silversolderingtheconnecting faceswerethoroughly cleanedandcoatedwith ux. Photograph46 shows thejig, uxandthesoldered crosshead. Photograph47 showsthepartiallycleaned upcrossheadsandtheradius rodsthatalsorequiretidyingup aftersoldering.Thevalvegear anditsoperatingleversonthe threecylinderSchoolsarequite complicatedandrequirealot ofefforttocreatesomething thatworksso,afterachat withEdatModelEngineers Laserthenecessaryinsideand outsidevalvegearliftingarms, eccentricrods,expansionlinks, reachrodsandgearframesets wereordered,togetherwiththe maincouplingandconnecting rods.Ihaveusedthislaser cuttingserviceseveraltimes andhavebeenpleasedwiththe qualityandthespeedyservice.
Itsavesasigni cantamountof timeandeffortonaproject.
Theconnectingrodblank wasmountedonasupporting mildsteelplatewithboltsinto tappedholestoenablethe pro letobereducedandonce completedthesamesetting wasusedtocutthe ute.This set-upisshownin photo48 and wasrepeatedforthesecond rod.Asimilarprocedurewas carriedoutonthecoupling rodsandthese,togetherwith theinsideconnectingrod,are shownin photo49.Theinside connectingrodwasamore

Thethreecylindervalve gearisanythingbutclearin thedrawingsbutfaintheart neverwonfairladysoherewe proceedwiththetrunnionblocks toholdtheexpansionlinks.The trunnionsweremachinedfrom mildsteelstockinthevertical mill(photo52)andthethroats werecutoutusinganendmill intwostages;onetoholdthe expansionlink,theotherto provideclearanceforthefork endarmsoftheradiusrods. Theexpansionlinkswerewater cutbyModelEngineersLaser andonlyrequireddraw lingto bringthemtosize.Watercutting isusedtoavoidhardening thelinkswhichwouldhave happenediftheyhadbeen ame
cut. Photograph53 showsthe threetrunnions,afterthejaws hadbeen ledtoshape,andthe holesforthepivotpinsdrilled andtapped.Theoneinthe centrehastheadditionalarmfor theeccentriclinkthatoperates theinsidevalvegear.Thepivot pinsarelooselyinplaceand wouldbecentralisedlaterby holdingonepininthelathe chuckandtheotherpininthe jawsofatailstockdrillchuck, afterwhichthepinsweresupergluedinplace. Usingtheunit
Slackenthefourknurlednuts, lifttheguiderails,slipthewood under(cutwiththegrain), tightenthenuts,slidetheplane blockalongbetweentherails –one‘plank’made.Slacken thenuts,movethewoodover, cutthenextplank.Depending onhowyougrindthetool pointyoucanmake‘V’groves, squareones,shiplapetc.-the choiceisyours.Theunitis excellentonplasticardaswell forwagonsides,buildings, walkways,locomotivecab oorsetc.(photo4).
Ialsofounditusefulfor scoringbrasssheettogivea clean,straightandsharpbend. If–forinstance–youwant toscore0.015inchbrass,set thecuttingtoolto0.005inch ( g3),liftthetoolpointjuston tothestartofthemetalsheet, pressdownhardandscorethe line.Thebrasswillfoldexactly ontheline-idealformaking smalltanksetc.

KenHawley(1927-2014)wasa remarkablecollector.Heowned atoolshopinShef eldbut besidessellingtoolshewas fascinatedbytheirmakingand makers.Shef eldthenmade anincrediblevarietyranging fromgardentools(photo23) tosurgicalinstruments (photo24) andfrombuilder’s toolstoprecisionmeasuring equipment.Sadly,muchof theindustrywasindecline. Manysmallermanufacturers wereclosingdownwithothers sendingproductionabroad. Herecordedhowcraftsmen likethe‘LittleMesters’would makespecialisedtoolsoreven partsoftoolslikehandles, sometimes lmingoperations. Hebuiltavastcollection oftoolsoccupyingseveral garagesandhishome.Almost equallyimportantlyhecollected manufacturers’cataloguesand salesinformation,nowavital record,alongwithengineering drawingsandpatent information.Documentationis avitalpartofagoodmuseum collection.
Thereissomuchinthe collectionthatonearticle cannotdoitjustice.“Our missionistopreserve thecollectionandthe knowledgebehindit”says KeithCrawshaw,KenHawley Trustchairman.Amultiskilledteamofaroundthirty activevolunteershelpswith cataloguing,conservationand meetingthepublic.Museum staffandvolunteershave workedtocollectmanyof thestoriesofpeoplewho workedinthecity’sindustries. Sometimeswholefamilies wereinonetradeandfamily historiescanbetraced.

Manufacturerslikedtoshow offtheirwares.So,they marketedtheirproductsin carefullyarrangeddisplays usedatexhibitions,trade fairsandinshops(photo25). Displayswereoftenpreserved andnowmakeanattractive featureofthecollection (photo26). Oftenwithseveral dozenspecialisttypesof onetoolinthesamecase, theyshowjusthowvaried Shef eld’soutputwas.
Otherslikedtomakegiant versionsoftheirtools.Some aredisplayed,spectacular ifuseless,buthelpedsell products(photo27).
