6 OUT & ABOUT

February 2014

Newark kicks-off the show season

The Carole Nash Classic Bike Guide Winter Classic Show, January 4-5

J

ust the thing to work off the excesses of the Christmas period, a good brisk walk in the fresh air… even better if there’s some motorcycles to see. OBM headed to the Carole Nash Classic Bike Guide Winter Classic Show. Even though this is the third running of this event, it still amazes us how many enthusiasts are prepared to brave the elements on the first weekend in January and gather together to make a great show. Speaking of elements, all the elements for a good show were there, loads of

good classic bikes – on- and off-road as well as racing – loads of scooters, loads of autojumble, loads of trade stands and a top-notch classic guest in Roger Marshall. Roger proved a popular guest to have at the show and he’s a localish lad to the area, hailing from Lincolnshire. The stage area was always crowded when Roger was interviewed by compere Steve Plater. Anyway, have a look at a few pics from the weekend and remember it will soon be spring and the riding season will soon be here.

Honda Owners Club was very happy to have some publicity.

He’s a happy chap, so he should be as his Greeves has just earned Dave MacGregor the best comp bike award.

Always bright and light, the VJMC stand had lots of tasty Japanese machines on it.

February 2014

An interesting exhaust shape for this side valve Beezer on the Poacher’s stand.

OUT & ABOUT 7

Just in case you didn’t know, our guest of honour was a road racer, here’s one of his bikes to prove it.

Roger Marshall has obviously said something that tickled Malcolm Wheeler and Steve Plater during his interview.

If ever a machine was quintessentially ‘English’ then it has to be the Triton cafe racer. We thought this one was superb, the judges did too as it has a rosette.

The sound of a big four-stroke on full noise is one to stir the soul, this Métisse can also stir the soul just standing there.

OBM spent a while on the London Douglas MCC stand listening in awe to tales of the dealer parts sell-outs when there were so many parts on offer for next to nothing the club couldn’t physically get them all.

Just because it’s only 98cc doesn’t mean it’s any less worthy. New Hudson was just one of many, which mobilised a generation, with its next step up from a bicycle.

First of the line is always a worthy contender for a pic. This is Yamaha’s first YZ… a 1973 version 360A. Desirable now, desirable then, but for those with deep pockets.

18 HOW TO...

February 2014

Worn or worn out…? Part 3 Something which arises during the course of interviewing owners is not everyone fully understands the differences between wear and acceptable wear. OBM attempts to find out.

J

This device is designed to lock the clutch hub and clutch basket together.

Common engines will have extractors available, rarer units may need to have them made.

ust in case you’re reading OBM for the first time and wondering what we’re doing in this section with a fairly common Triumph engine; we’re attempting to show some of the obstacles that will come up when stripping an engine… any engine. Though every marque of motorcycle engine ever produced will have its own peculiarities they also have a remarkable number of similarities. Something spins, something rises and falls and they all wear, generally at the points where they spin or rise and fall. Those manufacturers’ handbooks and workshop manuals tend to have been produced by stripping a freshly produced engine, in the real world any engine likely to be seen here will have been through many years of use and abuse. So, ignore the fact this is a common engine, used because it was on hand, and think of it as a collection of moving parts. While I accept that the better and more accurately an engine’s moving parts work together, I will add, that tolerances are a variable and if your engine is unlikely to cover more than a few miles a year is it necessary to renew everything in sight? This fine line between worn, and worn out is the line we’re walking here.

Work carefully

With a common engine – BSA, Triumph, Norton as examples – the likelihood of manuals being available is very high and if you do rip an engine apart the information to put it back together is to hand. Rarer engines may not have this sort of information to hand so heed the words

‘work carefully and measure as you go.’ Given that we’re all interested in the technicalities of our motorcycles it would be a beneficial exercise for any engine to be measured as it comes apart, if only so you can tell how your engine has been looked after. It also provides endless reference material for club nights…

Please don’t tell me you’ve actually tried this…

Don’t do this

Sometimes locking things so nuts can be slackened needs a bit of creativity.

Take note of such markings on cam nuts as they may be left-hand thread and marked ‘LH’ for instance.

When working on an engine, or any mechanical structure for that matter, there will come a time when parts meant to turn freely need to be locked in place, generally so nuts can be slackened or tightened. Of the many potential ways to ‘lock’ an engine, jamming a screwdriver into the teeth of a cam wheel, while effective, is not acceptable under any circumstances. A better way, for Triumph engines at least, is to lock the pinions in the timing chest with a cog such as a spare crank pinion. The teeth profiles match and it seems a much kinder method of rendering the engine immobile.

Note the extra cog for locking purposes.

HOW TO... 19

February 2014

What you’ll need

For this bit you’re going to need to refer back to previous issues for various lists and add in the latest requirements. So, to get as far as we have here we needed: Engine-locking device ✸✸✸ Clutch-locking tool ✸✸✸ Clutch-hub extractor ✸✸✸✸ Cam extractor ✸✸✸✸ Well-fitting screwdrivers ✸✸✸✸ A flat bar ✸✸✸✸ As we’re stripping a motor there are a number of absolute ‘no no’s’ to be aware of, one is mentioned elsewhere and involves wedging things with screwdrivers, another is levering cases apart with tyre levers, chisels and, yes, screwdrivers. Such things are mechanical butchery. As I’ve upset a number of people recently with such flippant statements, may I say actual ‘butchery’ is a skilled trade just one not suitable to use in engines and perpetrators ought to be flogged. No matter how difficult a case is to remove from an engine, no matter how long it’s going to take or how stuck it is, never resort to levering between two machined faces. There are many more methods, most involving heat, or a kettle to make a cuppa while you think of a way not to destroy bits. In our case, it was the gearbox end cover that wouldn’t budge no matter what we tried. It would, however, go far enough to allow a screwdriver in for leverage… In the end the answer wasn’t that difficult. The problem was the kickstart shaft had a coating of rust

Triumph camwheels have other identification marks but it doesn’t hurt to mark wheels with a scriber for location purposes.

on it, enough to prevent the bush slipping over the shaft. Wire brushing the shaft then aiming a hot air gun at the case eased things and off came the case… several days and lots of coffee later.

Relatively easy…

… is a description of how this strip down has gone so far, right up until the time came to part the crankcases. The two major engine castings of any power unit will have some method of access allowing a crankshaft to be fitted inside. In the case of the British industry this involves a vertical split and the two halves being bolted together to form a rigid structure. No matter how hard you try, the cases will not part if any of the bolts are still in place. ‘Don’t be silly’ I hear you say, ‘no one would forget to take them all out…’ Hmmm, don’t be too sure, the odd fastening can often be hidden in obscure places, or you might be unlucky enough to have seized crankcase mouth screws like this engine. These screws are awkward to get at, easily damaged and

Pullers maybe needed for cam wheels too, if they are then they will be threaded in someway.

Warning!

In this case cam location is obvious, thanks to the distributor drive cog but this isn’t always the case, take notes and work carefully.

As with all things where your personal safety is concerned, don’t take risks and any doubt about a part, dump it. An engine seizing in the fast lane of a motorway is no joke and the times it has happened to me I’ve thankfully been able to make the hard shoulder safely. The words in this piece are a guide only, how you interpret them is up to you. resisted heating, easing oil, especially ground screwdrivers and swearing during attempted removal. As the slots opened up it was fast becoming impossible to unscrew them, this is the dangerous area where the lugs break off. As this is being written the remains of the screw heads are being carefully cut away with a burr in a Dremel, frequent inspection of progress and eventually all will be well.

We may have suggested it was possible to repair this, we were joking.

Important

The inner case was a lot easier to shift than the outer one.

It just needed the case studs removing and it pulled off.

These crankcase mouth screws were much more problematical.

It’s been pointed out to me that maybe a caption in an earlier ‘Worn or worn out’ feature could be misconstrued. The caption with the picture of a broken con rod, used in December 2013 OBM on page 19, seemed to suggest the con rod could be repaired satisfactorily. This was written ‘tongue in cheek’ and not meant to be taken seriously. The picture is reproduced here and clearly the only thing this con rod is good for is the scrap bin or possibly polishing up, mounting on a plinth and using as a trophy.
