For the December 1962 issue of The MotorCycle Peter Fraser set off into the snowy Surrey countryside for a pleasant meander around the back lanes. With no route in mind, other than to see where he ended up, Fraser enjoyed the snowbound countryside and is pictured heading through Holmbury St Mary. Does anyone recognise where in the village this shot is taken? Is it still the same?

January 2014

Going the extra mile… The Gaffer’s Gallop was a notable 1953 event, but Turner and his team only went as far as John o’ Groats, so what’s Shetland got to do with anything? GBC tells the tale.

A

handful of years ago, I was prowling around the Shetland Islands on my Tiger Cub and was introduced to a gentleman with a Triumph Terrier in his loft. He had saved it from a fate you don’t want to know – but it involved a cliff – and freely admitted that he would never do anything with it. The viewing was short, the deal swift and a few months later, the little pup was crossing the wintry North Sea to reside in the ‘projects corner’ at Cubbie Towers.

Umm, our boat in miniature....

Looking at the Gaffer’s Gallop route, which officially ended in Wick, it seemed that crossing to Orkney, and then to Shetland, would offer us a much easier trip home to the north east of Scotland (the ferry sails from Lerwick to Aberdeen), and it would also be an opportunity to return the Terrier to its former home. After the other Gallopers had departed on their long journey way south, Muckle Flugga Man and I trundled along to the ferry terminal at Gills Bay where one-way tickets were purchased and hot food and drinks consumed. It was freezing, with a cooling autumn breeze. We didn’t have to wait long, and while we were thawing out, we got chatting to Colin and David Ross who had come over from Orkney to see the Terriers. It turned out that one of them knew one of the ferry crew and once on board, we were able to source a suitable bolt with which to fasten MFM’s petrol tank back to the frame. Knowing it would be dark by the time we docked at St Margaret’s Hope, I stupidly tried the Terrier’s lights once the bikes were fastened down, only to be rewarded with a blown fuse.

Bikes to the fore as usual – at Gills Bay.

The crossing wasn’t too bad, although fellow traveller, Gallop follower, Cub owner and Orcadian Hayley Budge finds even the calmest of seas a little unsettling. At the other side, a quick fettle of the lighting system revealed that the popped fuse was caused by the main beam filament blowing. With the spare bulbs handily packed away in the back of the rescue car, which was probably somewhere near Edinburgh by then, there was nothing for it but to set off to Kim and Steph Allen’s house for warmth, rest, and sustenance by sticking close to his tail-lights. Unfortunately, somewhere north of Kirkwall, the Terrier’s clutch failed altogether, and combined with no brakes, on unknown pitchblack roads, the ride was becoming dangerous. The MFM’s alternator seemed to be failing again, so we decided to leave the bikes at the ferry terminal and accept Kim’s offer of a lift. Returning to the bikes in plenty of time for the 11.45pm departure to Shetland, we booked in and waited... and waited... finally boarding just after 1am for some much needed sleep, and setting our alarms for the 7am arrival in Lerwick, Shetland. Part two to follow...

OUT & ABOUT 9

Adding those finishing touches Paintwork is the first thing anyone sees when they view a restored machine and it makes sense to do the job right. OBM popped in to Robin James Engineering Services in Leominster to see how it’s done.

T

he quality of paintwork is what makes the biggest visual impact when viewing a beautifully restored motorcycle. In general terms there are two sorts of paintwork: powder coating and ‘wet’ finishes. An industrial finish, powder coating is intended for massproduced products that need to look their best at minimum cost. It has serious disadvantages. It is a single-coat process, being very hard and chips easily, causing the exposed steel to rust. Corrosion

works its way beneath the coating which eventually fails totally in a relatively short time. When on the road, your motorcycle is subjected to impact by stones or grit which rapidly damages the powder coating. Given this, the process is largely unsuitable for bikes. How is your car painted? Answer – acrylic enamel. This is a three-coat process: etchprimer, high-build primer and colour coat. The material is softer than powder coating but that

From the ‘in your face’ schemes of the 80s to the ....

gives it an advantage, since its tolerance to chipping is greater. When the colour coat is damaged, there still remain two more layers beneath that are unlikely to be penetrated and even if they are, the cratering effect is significantly less than powder. The surface finish is better, too, with a much greater gloss level.

... understated elegance of the 20s, paintwork needs to be completed properly.

Because acrylics are only stoved at 60°C, instead of three times that temperature for powder, polyester bodyfiller can be used to make good imperfections in the sub-surface and is a vital step in achieving perfection. Filling beneath powder coating is not possible, so if your frame tubes or mudguards are rusty and dented, powder coating is not the best choice. Robin James discontinued powder coating several years ago. A spokesman for the firm said: “Our standard finish is acrylic enamel and our painter a valued craftsman. At the end of the day, you get what you pay for and quality is demonstrably more important than corner-cutting. “Our ethic is ‘do it once and do it right’. If you powder coat your Norton, BSA or Velocette frame for example, you commit yourself to doing it all over again in just a few years.” For more details contact Robin James Engineering Services, Clinton Road, Leominster HR6 0RJ. Numbers are up

John Woodward and Norman Hyde, with the record breaking outfit. The close-fitting streamlining was made by John’s brother, Don.

Record breaker unveiled The latest exhibit to star at the National Motorcycle Museum is this Triumph land speed record sidecar outfit, which was unveiled by ex-Triumph experimental man John Woodward, who has restored it with full museum support. In 1972 Norman Hyde captured the World Sidecar Land Speed Record on the supercharged Roadrunner III 850cc Triumph Trident outfit, at an average speed of 161.8mph, a record that remained unbeaten for over 35 years.

A little bit of personal help is needed here by the OBM editor as something of a puzzle has arisen with our engine rebuild. Triumph’s numbering system used on the smaller unit twin engines is fairly easy to follow as it consists of the model designation and a five digit number pre-fixed by ‘H.’ When I inspected the 3TA unit for our stripdown the number on the crankcase didn’t follow any Triumph system. It is untampered so the number has been on since the cases were fitted as new. Logically the feeling is they must be replacement cases fitted at a dealership but if that is

the case why not stamp them with the damaged cases number? The other option, and a highly unlikely one, is it’s a rare prototype engine and worth millions but I’m not holding my breath. Any suggestions?

January 2014

Worn or worn out…?

During the course of interviewing motorcycle owners it has emerged that not everyone fully understands the differences between wear and acceptable wear. OBM attempts to find out.

O

Don’t chase the engine around the workbench, make, modify or buy a jig.

Warning! Don’t take risks

As with all things where personal safety is concerned, don’t take risks – if you are in any doubt about a part, dump it. An engine seizing in the fast lane of a motorway is no joke and on the occasions it has happened to me I’ve thankfully been able to make the hard shoulder safely. The words in this piece are a guide only, how you interpret them is up to you.

ne thing I have learned over a number of years attempting to keep old motorcycles up and running is that the advice of someone who actually knows what they are talking about is worth their weight in new old stock parts. So, unless the bloke down the pub is a qualified engineer and does know what he’s talking about… This whole concept of ‘fit for use’ is a tricky one, compounded by the fact that few classic vehicles cover anything like the mileage they would have been expected to by their makers. There’s little point in renewing everything in an engine if it’s going to take years to cover the running-in mileage. However, if you fancy the idea of using the bike as a commuter machine then it will have to be right but that doesn’t always mean chucking things away. In fact, after a chat with Steve Cooper, it seems if later Japanese machines are your bag then there won’t be huge stocks of spares lying in warehouses – thanks to computer controlled stocking systems.

Ever wandered round an autojumble and wondered just what those piles of engines are like inside? Yes, I bet you have, but have you been tempted to purchase or has fear of the unknown put you off? This Triumph 3TA engine came my way from the pages of OBM long before I was working on it. For the purposes of this series it will be ideal and hopefully there will be lots wrong with it, so we can show you how to put it right. Though this test engine is hardly uncommon, the problems contained within will apply to all motors be they singles, twins, triples or even more. The only difference is the number of bits that need checking.

Some damage is obvious… fins can be welded…

… so long as you have them, or something to make them from.

Exhibit A

HOW TO... 17

January 2014

Missing was the pressure release valve.

Rust and corrosion but how bad is it?

Best place to start with your miscellaneous engine is with a visual inspection – make notes as you take pictures or do sketches. No matter what engine you have there will be literature available about it, Mortons archive for instance is packed full of all sorts of manuals and parts lists. Owners clubs too will be able to help identify what you have if it isn’t something common like a BSA, Triumph or Norton as examples.

Getting to grips

With the engine in a cradle – which needed some engine plates cutting from alloy sheet – boxes on hand, it’s time to start. Some people might have space to pull everything apart in one go and lay it all out, I don’t and probably most OBM readers don’t either. So, proceed slowly, lay bits in boxes, bags, drawers or whatever works for you and keep them together. Easing oil is a wonderful thing but it takes time to work so, give any bits and pieces a good dousing, repeated if necessary until fasteners undo easily. Heat may also be needed and don’t underestimate the benefits of hot water from a kettle. Basically the rarer the engine and the less likely there are to be bits available, more careful disassembly is needed. Oh and never throw anything away.

Surprise surprise

It’s a bit like Christmas this bit, a pretty package with goodness knows what inside. Though the first surprise was on the outside,

as the engine number bore no relation to any Triumph numbering sequence I’ve ever seen, second surprise came when the head came off… no pistons! Hmm, as far as I recall the vendor said: ‘complete’. All appears well in the timing case, or at least all there. Not so inside the primary case where quite a bit is missing. Pleasant surprises included all threads so far being intact, the big ends not being seized and… and… well that’s about it for the minute. There’s a few bits to look at so, some measuring and inspection to do. Standard bore on a 3TA is 58.25mm and even my cheap vernier shows these bores are bigger – 59.75mm according to 75p’s worth of measuring kit, though something more accurate will be required once the rust patches in the bores are cleaned up. Also in interesting condition are the cam followers, rusted to their bores... more soaking in easing oil as a first stage. On the upside, it seems the barrel fins are okay. More inspection of the bits stripped off so far show the valve collet area is going to need soaking in oil before stripping.

Valves are all there.

Just how bad is too bad?

What you’ll need…

… depends on how far you’re going to go. Like all the encyclopaedia adverts on the telly ‘the list builds into a comprehensive reference facility’ so keep an eye on the list. You might not want to buy all the equipment in this list, nor do you have to – an icon alongside indicates the importance of each bit of kit – four is very important, one is less so: Sockets ✸✸✸ Tube or box spanners ✸✸✸ Easing oil ✸✸✸✸ Kettle ✸✸ Parts book (if available) ✸✸✸✸ Workshop manual (if available) ✸✸✸✸ Micrometer ✸✸ Vernier ✸✸ Magnifying glass ✸✸✸✸

Surprise number one is the lack of pistons…

Observations

There are some paradoxes in this engine, it seems to have had a hard life, yet the telltale signs such as chewed threads and the crankcase mouth castings are okay. I’ve not attempted to turn the engine over with a socket on the crank nut as goodness knows how long it is since any oil went through the passage ways and I don’t want to ruin anything inside by being hasty.

Tappet block and followers are rusty too…

All seems intact in here.

40 TOOL REVIEW

January 2014

It’s all a matter of preservation Putting a bike into storage is an exacting process involving major cleaning and stripping… or is it? OBM hears about a different process.

E

Extreme testing at Newcastle University.

ven in what passes for a summer here in the UK the weather can mean long periods between riding and even if you set out in the sunshine there’s no guarantee you’re going to return home in it. It’s a long job to clean a bike up properly for storage. A process which involves washing, careful drying, oil and fluid changes, battery removal – if the bike has one fitted – and coating in some form of protective grease for want of a better word. With this sort of work needed after a ride, and of course before the bike can be fired up in the first place, it sort of precludes going out for a quick spin if the weather looks okay for an hour or two. The alternative is to keep the bike covered over with all sorts of liquids and use it all year round. At least that used to be the alternative... until we heard about a system devised to store expensive mining equipment in harsh environments. The system was mentioned in our products page last issue and intrigued us as it seemed too good to be true – a wheel in, wheel out storage system that allows for the bike to be used if the odd winter sunny day arrives. So, we asked for more information.

Extreme conditions The Shield will arrest this sort of decay.

Even laid up in a garage, your bike could deteriorate.

Inventor Terence South took us through the wheres and whyfores of the Shield system, including how he got into this lark in the first place. It is hard to believe when you’re out in the worst of the winter weather there are harsher environments for machinery to deal with than the typical UK winter. In Mongolia, where temperatures plummet to ridiculous lows, it is impossible for work to continue. Our man Terence was involved in looking after mining equipment worth millions of pounds and an industry where this equipment had to be kept working until the last possible minute and be reinstated at the earliest opportunity. If not working the equipment would have to be laid up until the economic climate meant remote mining facilities became viable again, a period that could involve years of storage. In such an industry the

Conditions this extreme prompted development of the Shield.

‘stripping to clean’ method would be horrendously labour intensive and the Shield process had much potential for time and cost saving. On a visit to his home in the north east, Terence was asked if anything he was involved with professionally could be adapted to help with a friend’s motorcycle storage problems. It seems no matter what was done, the bikes still rusted and required work. When looked at from the logical engineering point of view, Terence immediately saw that all the friend needed was a shelter big enough for a motorcycle rather than a mining machine of some several tens of tons in weight. The concept was tested by Newcastle University Advanced Materials Testing Unit and deemed good. Next stage was getting a working prototype up and running to test the vapour flow of various shapes of base as well as streamlining use. After successful trials the system is now at the stage where it is a viable proposition.

What is it?

The Shield is a cocoon system which, unlike vacuum systems that can apparently affect circuit boards and pressure switches, uses an air circulation system to move an acid neutralising vapour around inside the bag. This vapour penetrates all areas of the bike – or whatever is inside the bag – and destroys the moisture that causes the problems; simple as that. The bike can be wheeled in and out of the storage system and used straight away. It can even be put away straight after a ride, so now there’s no reason to avoid that winter ride.

Taking a stand What are they? A range of sidestands for pre-unit and unit Triumphs covering the period from 1954 to 1970. They are made in the UK from drop-forged steel and to original Triumph drawings. They’re just the thing to tidy up the stand area of your Triumph, the range covers unit 350/500 and unit/ pre unit 650s. What’s the cost? They’ll set you back £65 plus VAT and a bit of postage unless you call into Supreme and pick them up. Where d’you get ‘em? Supreme Motor Cycles on 01455 841133 or email enquiries@suprememotorcycles.co.uk

Mopping up What are they? Satinising mops for cleaning all sorts of metal. If you recall our tool review in the November 2013 issue (p46) when we tested the satine range from Perfect Polishing our only complaint was the mops weren’t available in narrow strips. Not so, said Eunice at Perfect Polishing, and promptly despatched a set of slim pads. They’re made of the same stuff, in the same grades and come with an arbor to fit in an electric drill, although they should also fit on the spindle of a bench grinder too. These thin mops will happily get in to all sorts of nooks and crannies. There are two sizes of disc 6in and 4in depending on your needs. What’s the cost? The 4in kit – with 20 mops and an arbor – is £12.50 plus £2.60 post, the 6in kit – with 20 mops and an arbor – is £20 plus £2.60 postage. Where d’you get ‘em? Perfect Polishing, 4 Carlyon Rd, Atherstone, Warwickshire CV9 1JE. www.perfectpolishingkits.com sales@ppk@hotmail.com 01827 717606

Sound of silence What are they? Linear-attenuation hearing protection designed for today’s motorcyclist. ProGuard hearing protection, a leading supplier of custom-fit solutions for music, industry and sporting applications is pleased to announce the release of the BikerPlugz – a universal-fitting, reusable earplug designed for motorcyclists and motorsports, which will fit comfortably and easily into the ear and under the helmet without causing irritation. What’s the cost? £14.99, each pair comes with a key-ring type container. Where d’you get ‘em? Visit www.earplugs.co.uk

The outer rim… protected! What are they? Rim protectors for protecting your rims when changing tyres or fixing punctures. We realise not everyone does that sort of thing these days, but, even if you take your wheels along to somewhere that does do tyrechanging, it wouldn’t hurt to have a set of these in your pocket just in case they don’t have any to hand. Basically the protectors slip over the rims and prevent damage to polished, anodised or painted rims when tyre levers are used. What’s the cost? £6.98 plus a bit of postage. Where d’you get ‘em? Thorcraft Ltd 01424 717453 www.toolsbypost.com

Stator of the nation What is it? A new generator stator from champion of the British bike, Paul Goff. It is the one for the Lucas energy transfer ignition system used in various Triumph and BSA comp bikes. Apparently until now, if your ET stator was faulty the only thing to do was replace the whole ignition system, now you just need a new stator. This ET stator was fitted to off-road versions of T120, TR6, T100, TR5, A65, C15 and all accept the standard 74mm rotor. They replace the RM15 (LU47149), and RM19 (LU47188) stators. What’s it cost? £88 plus £7.95 P&P Where d’you get them? From Paul Goff, 62 Clare Rd, Prestwood, Bucks HP16 0NU or visit www.norbsa02.freeuk.com email norbsa02@ aol.com or phone 01494 868218.

Classic discography

Fork tuning What is it? It’s a brand new set of girder forks from Jake Robbins. Many enthusiasts like the style of a girder fork but maybe a bit wary of using something made a lot of years ago. Jake recognised this need from his girder fork refurbishment service and decided to set to and make new ones. This is the result. The forks feature an adjustable double damper to control the single central barrel spring. Construction is from a one inch seamless taper tube with laser cut lugs for strength and ease of fabrication. The forks are being road tested and will be in production during December when the aim is to have them as an ‘off the shelf’ stock item with a full spares back-up and a selection of stem sizes to help the builder with fitment. Jake will also offer a fitting service in his workshop. Where d’you get ‘em? Contact Jake via email jakevinteng@aol.com and his phone number is 07986254144.

What is it? A new, lighter disc for any standard T140 Bonneville or T150/T160 Trident. It saves a whopping 500g and can be used on Rob North replicas, bobbers and Tritons too, so long as the forks are compatible. They’re UK made, actually in Coventry, and the weight removal has been accurately done. What’s it cost? £59 plus VAT and £10 for postage. Where d’you get it? Supreme Motor Cycles on 01455 841133 or email enquiries@supreme motorcycles.co.uk
