By the 1930s, some 65 million telegrams per year were being delivered in the UK, mainly by telegraph boys on pedal cycles. A scheme to use motorbikes, allowing boys aged 17 to volunteer for training with their parents’ permission, was launched in Leeds. It is here on February 2, 1933, that two colleagues cast their eyes enviously on a youthful BSA-mounted telegraph boy. Such deliveries dropped to 10 million in the 1960s, and the Post Office decided to abolish the scheme in 1977. Photo: Mortons Archive

What should a museum be? A place where treasures are safely stored for visitors to study and admire, certainly, but – especially where historic transport artefacts are concerned – one that should never be allowed to feel like a mortuary. To draw a parallel, I make no excuses for returning to a phase in my career when I was deeply involved with steam railways. Nothing looks more forlorn than a cold, dead steam locomotive – yet all it takes is a match, a few oily rags, a pile of sticks, a few shovelfuls of coal and a little patience (while oiling round) to transform it into a living entity that eats fire, erupts smoke and steam and makes the ground tremble as it moves.

So it is with motorcycles, which are far more interesting alive than dead. We are fortunate in the UK to have such wonderful venues as the National Motorcycle Museum in the West Midlands, set up in 1984 through the sheer drive and ambition of Roy Richards, and the Sammy Miller Museum in Hampshire whose history goes back a further 20 years. Although Roy passed away in 2008, the fine institution he founded continues in trust under the guardianship of his widow Christine and sons Simon and Nick, and today’s museum director James Hewing is breathing new life into this national treasure.
Already the NMM has, by launching an ambitious and comprehensive Friends scheme (of which much more next month); invited bike clubs to hold regular meetings in its hallowed halls; and encouraged British vintage and classic groups to display their machines outside its doors (the latest I’ve heard about, being a huge gathering of Triumph Tiger Cubs on Sunday, June 7). The NMM’s bikes are roaring into action again, as in last year’s Norton rotary adventure on the Isle of Man (and much more of it is planned for this year) and further south, thanks to Sammy, we can still occasionally hear racing legends like the Gilera four and Moto Guzzi V8 burst into life again.
It’s the best kind of ‘live’ music that any motorcycle enthusiast could wish for – and long may it continue.
Girder Fork Club plans bigger Skipton event Following last year’s successful Big Bike Sunday event at Skipton Auction Mart, the Girder Fork & Classic Motorcycle Club is planning an even bigger show on June 28, and would like to include some companies that can offer quality products and services for the restoration and running of girder fork and classic motorcycles. Skipton is ideally situated for suppliers from North and West Yorkshire, Hull and Lancashire, and the club’s vice-chairman, Brian Sanderson, asks all interested stallholders and companies to contact him on 07931 312579 or by visiting briansanderson@talktalk.net He would also like to hear from any owners wishing to display their

RockShocks boosts Golden Valley’s trials weekend The Golden Valley Classic MCC’s Gerry Holdstock Eurocup two-day trials event, which takes place at a superb venue near Stroud, Gloucestershire, on July 4-5, now has a partner in the shape of the Bedford-based RockShocks shock absorber company. Proprietor Gary Fleckney said: “After riding in some great events abroad in the past, and the British Eurocup round for the past two years, I can see that the club has put the emphasis on the whole weekend. It isn’t just a turn-up and go-home two-day trial because the club really does cater for a clutch of like-minded people camping in a field with two days of trialling and evening entertainment. As I’d like to see more events like this, I approached the club and a deal was arranged. A club spokesman said: “A great deal of effort goes into this weekend, and for the past five years it has been successful. Having RockShocks on board ensures its continuity, with the hope of attracting new riders who have yet to experience a proper pre-1965 twin shock and sidecar two-day. “With more and more riders using RockShocks, to have Gary on site for service and set-up advice gives the event that bit more professional prestige than the older international trials used to have.” With an entry limit of 120, regulations are now available from Deborah Smith (01242 233315) or the club’s www.goldenvalley classicmotorcycleclub.co.uk website.

After restoring the bike, Mr Lloyd used it for family trips around the UK, but after almost 10 years of use, the primary chain snapped. In 1968 it was dismantled and stored in a lock-up garage in Liverpool pending further restoration, but a decade later, thanks to a misunderstanding over ownership of the premises, Mr Lloyd arrived to find that the padlocks had been cut and his bikes, including the Series-A, were being loaded into a skip!
The fuel tank looks imposing from any angle.
After much argument, they were transported to his home and stored in the rear bedroom, where they remained for the many more years until restoration of the Vincent to concours standard finally began in 2007. Sadly, Mr Lloyd passed away before seeing the finished result.
More than half a century of Dragon Rally pictures After Carol Morgan published her Dragon Rally book in 2011, so many readers asked if she could produce a second book that she agreed to do so, and after four years of hard work it was finally launched at this year’s ‘Dragon’ on February 7-8. Thanks to lots of help from rallyists who have attended the famous North Wales rally over the years, along with the Conwy Motor Cycle Club and Mortons Archive, the book boasts almost 200 pages of stories and photographs taken over the last 50 years. The high overheads of self-publishing dictated only a limited print run, so if you want a copy, order it quickly. Carol says this is definitely the last such book she’ll produce.
Brimful of nostalgic photographs and some great Dragon Rally stories, Carol Morgan’s new Dragon Rally Picture Gallery looks set to sell like hot cakes.
Although the retail price is £14.99, there was a special ‘Dragon’ launch price of £12. The Dragon Rally Picture Gallery, a Compilation of Photographs and Stories from the Dragon Motorcycle Rally by C A Morgan, is available online or by contacting Carol at morganmaps@btinternet.com

Day of the dustbin... Pete Kelly looks back to the ‘dustbin years’, when full frontal streamlining was considered the shape of things to come, and led to the development of The Motor Cycle’s startling ‘Dreamliner’ project.
P
erhaps the most abiding image from the 1950s dustbin-faired Grand Prix era is that of the great Bob McIntyre wrestling his 500cc Gilera four around the Isle of Man, the number 78 hand-painted on the machine, to record the firstever 100mph lap of the TT course. It’s an equally well-recorded fact that, a mere four years later, the same rider almost repeated the feat on a conventionally faired machine of half the size when he hurtled a 250cc Honda four to a fastest lap of 99.61mph before retiring with what were described as electrical problems – but that’s another story! Why such an unflattering term as ‘dustbin’ was applied to such beautifully designed streamlining I’ve never fathomed, but the wind tunnel-tested fairings fitted to the top GP contenders including Moto Guzzi could slip through the air with hardly a ripple. With speeds approaching 170mph, however, the question of stability in strong side winds became a serious concern, and the year after Bob Mac’s famous TT milestone, full frontal fairings were no more, having been banned by the FIM on the grounds of safety. Soon after ‘dustbins’ made their first appearances on the world championship scene, the talented team of technical experts, artists and riders at The Motor Cycle, in conjunction with those at sister journal British Plastics, got together
to discuss a special project to design and build a streamlined glassreinforced plastic shell for a road machine in order to establish the merits and demerits of such a device. It all started at a 1955 discussion on future trends in motorcycle design during which ‘The Blue ’Un’s’ editor Harry Louis was reported to have said: “Right, let’s build a streamliner of our own and find out the answers at first hand.” Alan Baker, who was involved in the project throughout, described in 1957 how the first essential – a typical machine around which to design the cowling – was quickly found. “In view of their co-operation on weather-protection tests (which had appeared in the September 24 and October 1, 1953 issues of The Motor Cycle) and the inquiring mind of chief engineer R A Wilson-Jones” he wrote, “an approach was made to Royal Enfield at Redditch.” The firm’s chairman and managing director, Major F W Smith, readily loaned a humble 350cc works hack Bullet that would soon become wrapped in all the glamour of what became known as the ‘Dreamliner’. The general design of the fairing was drawn up by The Motor Cycle’s technical illustrator Lawrie Watts, an aerodynamicist of some repute, especially with model aircraft and racing sidecar outfits. His ideas were translated into reality by Richard Wood, then assistant editor of British Plastics.
Bob McIntyre makes history on the Isle of Man in 1957 as he becomes the first rider to lap the TT course at over 100mph on the Gilera four. Mortons Archive.
A whole article could be written (and indeed was) about exactly how the complex shell was fabricated, but we’ll skip that for now. By the autumn of 1956, staffman Vic Willoughby was road testing the finished result in a series of comparisons carried out with and without the fairing at the MIRA proving ground at Lindley, near Nuneaton. The startling results, seen in the table at the bottom right of this page, were revealed in Vic’s article headed ‘Tomorrow’s Roadster Today’ in the November 29, 1956 issue of ‘The Blue ’Un’. His imaginative introduction went: “How would you like to buy premium-grade petrol for 3s-6d (less than 17p in today’s money) a gallon? How would you like an all-

round improvement of 10 per cent in speed and acceleration? And if, for good measure, the offer included a refund of the money you spend on weatherproof riding gear – what then? “I cannot imagine any motorcyclist not being thrilled by the triple prospect. An unattainable pipe-dream, you say? But no. We of The Motor Cycle have recently proved that all these benefits can be obtained from comprehensive streamlining. “During the last few years,” wrote Vic, “the merits and demerits of streamlining for racing have become widely known. On the credit side there are substantial improvements in maximum speed, upper-range acceleration and fuel economy, comparative warmth and ‘dryth’ for the rider, plus a considerable measure of physical protection in the event of a tumble. “On the debit side, handling difficulties have been experienced in high winds with some designs which
are not aerodynamically sound. Designers who lack wind-tunnel testing facilities have been quick to copy the shapes developed by rivals more favourably placed, and there is now a fair measure of agreement that the pros of soundly designed streamlining appreciably outweigh the cons.” Road riders have always tried to ape their racing heroes, and it wasn’t long before glass fibre dustbin fairings were offered by several manufacturers including Avon and DMD. In 1990, I bought a second-hand ‘dustbin’ of unclear manufacture, and after patching it up and spraying it bright red, I fitted it to my 1984 Moto Guzzi Le Mans Mk 4. It was relatively easy to work out the fittings, including a bar across the front downtube, and as the headlight shone straight through the Perspex screen, no changes had to be made to the electrical wiring. Indeed the arrangement passed the MoT test every time.

The Dreamliner caused something of a stir when it was taken to the Isle of Man during the 1957 Golden Jubilee TT at which Bob Mac smashed the 100mph barrier for the first time.

Vic Willoughby found the Dreamliner just as effortless to heel into bends as an unfaired machine.
When the writer decided to fit a dustbin fairing to his 1984 Moto Guzzi Le Mans in 1990 or thereabouts, it certainly turned a few heads!
The Dreamliner is captured at a famous TT location in the days when the Governor’s Bridge dip was not closed to ordinary traffic during practice and race weeks.
The streamlining certainly turned heads, some people remarking how nice it looked and others shaking their heads in bewilderment! At the time I frequently rode the Guzzi from Cambridgeshire to Cheshire to visit relatives, taking the trans-Pennine M62 every time, and I never once experienced difficulties from side winds. This seemed strange, because I’ve been blown sideways clear across one lane of the A66 Scotch Corner to Penrith road on a Royal Enfield sidecar outfit.
I suppose it’s because, at a mere 70mph (okay, and a little bit more sometimes!) the weight of the Le Mans compared with that of a racing machine was sufficient to keep it well planted. With the side scoops directing air roughly onto the V-twin’s cylinders, I never experienced any cooling problems on the open road, but when crawling through busy London traffic with a high-compression engine on a warm summer’s day, cooling was marginal to say the least.
One handicap of the dustbin was that it severely hampered access to the front end of the bike for cleaning etc. In the end, after two years of use, I replaced my dustbin with a conventional twin-headlight sports fairing, and that remains on the bike to this day. Although the sight of a dustbin fairing on the road these days is rare, I wonder if any OBM readers still have bikes fitted with them? If so, we’d love to see the photos.

Martin Lampkin
Youngest of the three Lampkin brothers, Martin claimed the world trials crown in 1975 for Bultaco. He’d previously won the European championship, 1973 to be precise and was one of those in with a chance of winning the world crown in its first year. Classic Dirt Bike was recently granted a pass to get into Yorkshire and visited Martin in his home to get the low down on his championship year for a feature in the current issue. What transpired was a brilliant tale of travelling the trials world in a Transit van crammed with bikes and mates, the highs and lows of brilliant success and crushing disaster and an insight into the life of a professional motorcyclist. Martin will be at the show on Saturday only, other commitments have his time on the Sunday, so make sure to catch one of his two stage sessions.
Sammy Miller If ever someone could be classed as dedicated to the sport of motorcycling then Samuel Hamilton Miller has to be that person. From his first forays into grass track racing in Northern Ireland to the heady heights of team manager for Honda’s trials efforts in the 70s, Miller’s career has been of continuing success and he worked hard to achieve it. Though a top road racer – good enough to be a GP contender and a factory rider for Italian factories – scrambler and enduro rider, Sammy’s main successes came in the feet-up world of trials riding. Dissatisfied with the available products for this sport, Sammy built his own bike, then took a production machine and altered that before a chance conversation brought him to the Ariel factory and a standard looking HT5 trials bike. When the British industry gave up on trials, Sammy went to Bultaco in Spain, developed their Sherpa model, then did a similar job for Honda in the 70s. Catch his stage talks or get one of the few remaining dinner tickets and hear his view on the world.
Bill Brown Cumbrian lad Bill Brown has been a part of the MX scene for lord knows how many years. His involvement has been as a rider – he still races and is still fast – he’s imported Maicos to the UK and could really be classed as ‘Mr Maico’ if it wasn’t for his Wulf Sport clothing and accessory range which could label him ‘Mr Wulf Sport’ or his ability to shift motocross bikes which could label him ‘Mr MotoCross Dealer’. A super salesman, Bill once picked up 200 Montesa Cappras from the factory in Spain and sold the lot in three days! We’ve just thought of another label for Bill, Mr Enthusiast, a driving force behind Cumbrian motorcycle sport, Bill can be seen being involved with the popular Nostalgia event in August where off-road motorcycling is celebrated in style. Catch his speech at the Saturday Dinner but hang on to your sides…
The displays What would a show be without the chance to celebrate the odd anniversary or two, the odd special occasion or just to launch something new? Yes, correct, it would be a waste so here are a few anniversaries we can fit into our show for 2015.
ISDT–Manx style Okay, the International Six Days Trial – the ISDT – for many years the premier international shop window for the motorcycle industry. Launched on the back of the ACU Six Days Trial immediately before the First World War, the premise for the event was to encourage reliability in motorcycles in the first years of their
existence. A team event, each had to be mounted on motorcycles made in their home country to be in with a chance of the main award. Every year the winning team’s country was offered the chance to host the following year’s event. Not every country wanted, or could afford to take up the offer so then it was open to other nations to host it.
The Isle of Man stepped up to the challenge three times 1965, 1971 and 1975. Our small display of what are now called ‘enduro’ bikes, reflects these three years in one momentous decade when the action on the island was all off-road. It might be hard to believe given the small size of the Isle of Man, but the course markers and organisers,
including Geoff Duke, put on a varied event which tested the mettle of every team in the contest each year. The display reflects the changes the sport was going through and at the start of the decade the Trophy team was mounted on British machines, but for the last event that ruling had been removed and at last, the best riders in the

forthcoming MotoGP series. Ryder knows the people involved, the bikes and teams to watch and will likely have some insights as to the
performance of Valentino Rossi and Cal Crutchlow in the forthcoming season. Catch Julian’s stage presentation on Sunday only.
Graham Noyce Flamboyant Graham Noyce, the 1979 world Motocross champion has a fair chance of renewing his acquaintance with his title-winning factory 500cc Honda at the Putoline Classic Dirt Bike Show. ‘Rolls’ Noyce dominated British Motocross in the late 1970s and early 80s to win numerous British crowns. After teaming up with Brad Lackey in the Honda factory team for the 1978 season, Graham became team leader for the following year after Lackey went to Kawasaki and simply dominated. He won the series at the penultimate round without even needing to win on that day. Graham has not seen his winning Honda for over 20 years, since he rode the bike in the very early days of twin shock Motocross. All missing factory parts have now been located, and it’s just a battle against time to complete the rebuild before the show on Feb 21-22, when Graham will speak on stage both days. He is also to pick the best motocross machine of the show among the many on display at the two-day Shropshire spectacular.
Mick Grant Mick Grant crosses the great divide between road racer and trials rider as he hit the glory trail as a top line road racer in the 1970s, notching up an enviable record of wins in the Isle of Man TT. The GP scene, Daytona and that off-beat but always exciting series The Match Races. Granty not only raced at a high level and was consequently in demand as a rider but he also knew how to make the bike work too and Kawasaki, Honda and Suzuki all benefited from his engineering skills. Along the way to race superstardom Mick carried on being a trials rider and has in recent years built a selection of tasty pre65 trials bikes. The products of Ariel, Triumph and BSA have all been inspected by his exacting eye and the results have been spectacular. Mick has built up a wealth of tales and they will be entertaining to hear when he stands up to speak at the dinner.
Julian Wigg One of our stage guests this year is Julian Wigg who is bringing along his late brother Simon’s Dula Godden long track bike. No mean rider himself, Julian is a dab hand at grass track where he says at the 1971 British Championship meet he and another unknown rider Peter Collins – whatever happened to him eh? – cleaned up on the day with the 500cc class and the 350cc class going to the pair. “It was a laugh as no one had heard of either of us.” But it is fair to say Julian is on stage to talk about his brother Simon and it will be an interesting chat as he raced speedway, grass track and long track.
Steve and Olie Linsdell For those of us who followed vintage racing in the early days there was one name which rapidly came to the fore, that of Steve Linsdell. Not for him the traditional route of using an AJS 7R or Matchless G50 or even a Manx Norton… no, Linsdell chose Royal Enfield to race. Okay, they were cheap, and plentiful but not known for speed… until Linsdell got a hold of them. Fast track forward a bit until his lad Olie started racing and carried on the tradition of developing bikes and racing them rapidly. Julia Ryder will be interviewing the Linsdells and no doubt will have a wealth of tales about them.

Manx Nortons through the ages The overhead cam single cylinder Norton race bikes were so synonymous with the Isle of Man, the company named them ‘Manx’ Nortons to acknowledge the importance of the island to its race aspirations. Patiently developed by Norton, the production Manx reflected the changes
wrought by the race shop boss Joe Craig on the works machines. To celebrate the iconic model, the National Motorcycle Museum is bringing a representative selection of Manx models including its brand new one which is also its raffle bike. The display will be in the Classic Racer GP Paddock

46 SCOTTISH ROAD RUN
February 2015
Tiddlers’ Tootlers to ride again When the Stirling Castle Section of the Vintage Motor Cycle Club launched a Scottish road run for machines up to 250cc last year, it was so encouraged by its success that a second run has been organised for May. Jim Leddy looks back on the 2014 event.
F
ollowing last year’s inaugural Scottish TT – Tiddlers’ Tootle road run, that is – this year’s event will take place in and around Doune on Sunday, May 24. This date is different from that given in the OBM events calendar because, soon after the organising VMCC Stirling Castle Section secretary Keith Steyert sent in the details, it had to be changed to avoid a clash, but unfortunately by then it was too late for the calendar to be amended. The starting point and refreshment stop venue will remain the same as last year, but aspiring entrants are advised to enter early because of the run’s popularity. Vans, trailers and bikes started arriving at the Woodside Hotel nerve centre from 8.30am onwards last year, some people having travelled from as far as Inverness and Warrington. Doune is an old village with a medieval street plan, so trying to accommodate all the support was a worry. Visitors dispersed themselves sensibly, although at one point a path had to be cleared to enable the hotel’s chef
to report for duty and prepare the Sunday roast special! Keeping the capacity limit to 250cc meant that the ‘tiddlers’ so often tucked away at the back of sheds were given a chance to see the light of day, so out came Benelli, Gerosa, Terrot, Bianchi, Raynal, OEC, and Coventry Eagle machinery, along with BSA Bantams, LE Velocettes, MZs and the like.
Early start
With the skies looking ominous, it was decided to make an early start, but as the bikes were kicked into life and a familiar two-stroke fog developed, one wag was heard to say that global warming had taken a significant step forward! With the 45 mile route mainly on the flat, the owners of veteran machines were encouraged to enter as belt-drive singlespeeders with rim brakes sometimes find club runs too long or too fast. It was a delight to see the 1910 Triumph of A Loosemore, who’d come down from Inverness, running as sweet as a nut, but equally impressive was the 1978
250cc Ducati Strada brought by H Collins, a rare model and one of the day’s talking points. Before setting off, Jane Plumb’s stunning little Moto Guzzi Cardellino (goldfinch) took the prize for the most desirable machine, and the large pack of beer donated by Willie Dalgliesh was enthusiastically carried back to the van by her husband George. A 150cc MZ that broke down after losing its generative capacity on the moors above Kippen was quickly picked up and trailered to the lunch stop venue at Fintry where, undaunted, A Shields completed the run after making a battery swap with a magnetopowered machine. After clearing his 175cc CZ’s fuel line of the globules of water that he thought were causing erratic running, Bob Clark then discovered a serious flooding problem when he tried to restart it. With the saddle off and an array of bits, including the carburettor, laid out on the gravel, he was asked by a helpful onlooker if he intended throwing the carb over a nearby hedge. Bob replied that he’d throw the whole machine over the hedge if cleaning the instrument didn’t do the job! Minutes later, a healthy buzz and a cloud of smoke showed that all was well.
Four-strokes too
Jim Leddy, who wrote the accompanying article, looks happy enough with his 1972 MZ Trophy.
It wasn’t all two-strokes, though, for the entry was complemented by an interesting range of fourstroke machinery. Bob Swan was riding a 1936 overhead-valve, four-speed 148cc Royal Enfield Model T that had once been his father’s and remains totally original. Several LE Velocettes and the matching Honda CD200s of Jim and Pat Kirkham, who’d ridden the 90 miles from Oban that morning, looked smart and added an air of quiet mechanical sophistication. With the sun at last breaking through, the second leg of the
Leader of the pack D Riley takes a soaking on his 1949 D1 BSA Bantam.
Jane Plumb has good reason to smile, for her stunning little Moto Guzzi Cardellino (goldfinch) was adjudged the most desirable machine at the start. Husband George, following behind, wasted no time in stowing the prize – a large pack of beer – into the van.
event followed a route back over a ridge and across the Carse of Stirling to ride around the Lake of Menteith. With a cheery wave, David Shields whiffled past on his Suzuki GS250J twin which, despite its familiar Japanese style, is quite a rare machine. The single-cylinder GN250s are far more common, and only 25 of the twins are registered at the DVLA. S McKenzie rode a very clean example of a 1971 HarleyDavidson-badged 125cc two-stroke, and Derek Sloan a 1968 125cc Benelli that had originally been sold to a customer in Ohio by a mail order catalogue company. Riding a 1940 98cc James Autocycle, Paul Morley said that light pedal assistance had been required for only two minutelong spells over the entire route. The Tiddlers’ Tootle looks set to become a hardy annual, offering veteran, vintage and classic lightweight fun for riders and visitors alike.
Lightweights of all shapes and sizes cool down during the lunch stop at the Fintry Sports Centre, where one appreciative rider opened up his bacon roll to count no fewer than five rashers inside!

67th Banbury Run set to be a cracker
W
ith an entry list of 500, the Vintage Motor Cycle Club’s Banbury Run is the world’s largest gathering of machines manufactured before 1931, and the 67th running of the event will take place in and around Gaydon on Sunday, June 21. Supported by Footman James Insurance Brokers, Bonhams Auctioneers and Old Bike Mart, the run will operate over three different routes, all converging back on Gaydon, to cater for those who wish to enter a timed event and others who just enjoy riding alongside so many other vintage, veteran and pioneer bikes. To encourage more of the very oldest bikes to take part, discounted entry fees will be available for machines made before January 1, 1915. Entry forms can be downloaded from the dedicated Banbury Run website www.banbury-run.co.uk or the VMCC’s headquarters at Allen House, Wetmore Road, Burton upon Trent, Staffs DE14 1TR (01283 540557, fax 01283510547, email gileswillison@vmcc.net) but must be returned by February 28. The Bonhams auction of pioneer, veteran and vintage motorcycles will take place the day before the run at the saleroom in Banbury Road, Shipton on Cherwell saleroom Kidlington, Oxford OX5 1JH (contact ben.walker@bonhams.com for more details). Marshals are always required for the Banbury Run, and anyone willing to help should contact headquarters or visit events@vmcc.net.
Rare bikes coming up at Cheffins’ vintage sale Some rare vintage motorcycles will be coming up for sale at a vintage motorcycle auction conducted by Cambridgeshire-based auctioneer Cheffins at its Sutton, near Ely, sale ground on Saturday, April 25. Included in the lots are a pair of Ariel Square Fours dating from 1951 and 1954, a fully-restored 1936 500cc V-twin BSA J12/Swallow 9D outfit that’s been in the same family from new and a rare 1938 1140cc V-twin Royal Enfield KX. Among the other lots are a unique 1947 750cc Vtwin JAP Lyclone Special that was built from scratch using all-British parts, a 680 GTO JAP twin engine as used in Brough Superior Black Alpine motorcycles and a 1950 125cc BSA Bantam D1 Competition. Viewing will take place both on Friday, April 24 and the day of the sale. The gates open at 7.30am with the motorcycle auction getting under way at around 1.30pm. For more details, including how to take part in the sale, contact Jeremy Curzon on 01223 213777 or at jeremy.curzon@cheffins.co.uk
A New Imperial takes pride of place as entrants gather for last year’s warm and sunny Banbury Run.
Llangollen International Motorcycle Festival planned The Llangollen International Motorcycle Festival will take place at the town’s Pavilion on August 1-2. While the site has previously hosted successful bike shows,
the last in 2011, LlanBikeFest 15 is being organised by a new team of local motorcycle enthusiasts led by Harry Edwards. Situated at the foot of the Horseshoe Pass
and its famous bikefriendly Ponderosa Café, and on the edge of the Snowdonia National Park, Llangollen is set amid some of Britain’s best biking roads, and the
family-friendly festival will celebrate all aspects of motorcycling. There will be rideouts, stunts, displays, demonstrations, trade and club stands and, of course, beer, bands and
evening entertainment. The festival office can be contacted on 07960 693398 or at office@llanbikefest.co.uk and the event can be followed on Twitter and Facebook
Known as ‘Uncle Jim’s J12’, this fully-restored 1936 500cc BSA V-twin/Swallow 9D outfit has been in the same family since new and is estimated to sell at between £18,000 and £20,000.
