Welcome to the November edition of Scootering ...

l

am very much a man who lovesto see what all the 'latest gear' is for scooters, I love it whenthe latest productsand shiny new items are releasedby manufacturers . That sort of thing is alwaysa welcomedistractionfor me, but it is such a pain when I'm behindon deadlineand trying to work on the magazine. The secondI seea pressreleasefor somethingnew, it immediatelygrabsmy attention, no matter what else I'm doing... everythingelse gets pushedasidewhile I devourthe information for the newgoodies! But this month, in contrastto being completelycaptivatedby the 'very newest'of items, I wasdeeplyengaged by the 'veryoldest' of items, specificallythe informationcontainedwithin the two articles from the stable of Stuart Owen: The man who gaveus the Lambretta(p47) and The Lambrettawhich neverexisted(p62).

I haveto take my hat off to Stu; month after month for the past five yearshe has dug out someabsolutehistoricalgems, but I haveto say, thesetwo are my favouriteto date. I love it when somethingunusualcrops up, or a new twist is unearthed, and when it comesto those two stories, that is definitely the case! I hope you enjoythe articles as much as I did. Historylessonsaside, the stunning San Miguelfeaturescooterand the PinascoT5 featurescooterare both real headturners. We've beenspoilt againthis month, and we havea big queueof equally impressive scooterslined up at the door for the coming monthsalso... somethingto look forwardto for the fast-approachingwinter months! Anywaythat's enoughof my ramblings, it's another belter this month... stay safe and enjoy the issue. Dan

KICK START SuperHoodie 2.0 Oxford's overview Reinforcedriding hoodiewith CE protectorsand 100% DuPontKevlar fibre reinforcements .

Stu'stake The SuperHoodie2.0 is a soft poly-cotton jacketon the outside, but a technical garmenton the inside. It's linedfrom shoulderto waist, and shoulderto cuff with 100% DupontKevlar, which provides abrasionresistancein caseof an accident. The hoodieis probablyoneof the most comfortablepiecesof riderwear I've ever wornand its look hasan urban-streetfeel, which deliverspresenceand style. In terms of practicality, the hoodie'sYKKzip is sewnon to both the outerand the antiabrasionlining, for maximumstrength. The garmentis also mesh-linedfor comfortand comeswith CE-markedelbowand shoulder protectors;there is alsoa pocketin the back for an additionalprotectorif required. The hoodhasa toggleadjustment, and whenthe hood'snot in usethe high-level collar doesn't interferewith a helmet'schin strap. Onor off the scooterthe high-level collar is alsosoft and comfortable. The waist and cuffs havesoft elasticatededgesand the outer pocketshaveusefulhiddenzipper

pocketswithin them. Thereis a good-sized insidepocketwhich hasa Velcrofastening and there are alsothree internalsafetybelt loops, which are designedto press-stud rounda belt to stop the garmentfrom riding up in the eventof an accident.

Stu's view Havingroad-testedthe hoodieseveraltimes in light rain to bright sunshine, both on and off the scooter,I reallyliked it. Forme, it's anotherintelligentlyproduceditem, which deliverson looks, style, practicality and safety. RRP:ÂŁ119 .99 www.oxfordproducts .com

Holton1.0UrbanGloves Oxford's overview Leathergloveswith a doublelayeredpalmand adjustablesecureVelcrostrap.

As soonas the weatherstarted improving, and for those laid-back leisurerides, I knewtheseglovescould be a ridinggloveof choice. The glovesare neat and stylishand delivera cool '60s feel. Admittedly they'renot packedwith rider protection,so that's somethingto be awareof. But in termsof construction, they arewell madeand havea doublelayeredpalm. Onceyou'vegot the gloveson they'resecurely fastenedwith an adjustableVelcrostrap, which is neat, tidy and in keepingwith the overallstyle. The internallining is comfortable and their lightweightconstructioncausesthem to be flexibleand unrestricted;they also havea lowwrist-lineand don't interfere with sleevesor cuffs. I woretheseglovesmainlyin fine weather and throughoutthe roadtests they delivereda positiveconnection with the handlebarcontrols.Alsothe fact that they are so lightweightmakesclutch and front brakefinger extension engagementseffortlessand unrestricted; and connection with the throttle controlwassimpleand smooth.

Stu's view Theseglovesare nevergoingto be a first choicefor anyform of long-distanceenduranceriding,or riding in poorweather. However, they are a sensible considerationfor fair weatherridesand offer a good levelof protection, whichyouwouldexpectfrom a gloveof this type. RRP: ÂŁ39 .99

Q: I wonder if youcanclarifythe

legalposition regard inggroup rideouts in England? Lastweek,a smallgrouprideoutwasplanned butbythetimewearrivedat our destination, about30 scooters had amassed andeventhougheveryone wasverysensible aboutdistancing we donotwantto placeourselves liableforprosecution.

A: It's a tricky one. The ' Rule of Six' will apply to any gathering and this would fall within that. The law now states as follows: "Whenmeetingfriendsand family you do not livewith (or have formeda supportbubblewith) you must not meet in a groupof more than six, indoorsor outdoors. This

is againstthe lawandthe police will havethe powersto enforce these legallimits, includingto issuefines (fixedpenaltynotices) of £200, doublingfor further breachesup to a maximumof £6400 ." I hateto be a killjoy but as painfulas it is to saythis, I think there is a risk that by meetingin a groupthat size, you might be fined. Howoften thesefines aregoingto be givenout though is anybody's guess. It's an awful situation affectingeverywalk of life. EDDIEPILLERPRESENTS THE MOD REVIVAL Oneof the manyethicsand applicationsof the originalModsthat hasgoneon to stand the test of time is attentionto detail. When coupledwith impeccablepresentationthe resultcan be superb. This brandnew, four-CDcompilationof 92 tracks, 23 on eachdisc package, overseenby man-abouttown EddiePilleris absolutelystunningin its presentation . It comesin an A5 hardback bookpackage , with two CDsinsertedin specialpagesat the front, andthe sameat the back. In betweenis in effect a twopart bookletconsistingof Eddie's own overviewof the originsof the 79 revival, followedbythe ebbsandflowsof not only the aforementioned revivalsbut subsequent musicalModrevivals.Perhapsnot totally definitive, but in-depthenoughto satisfy the thirst for knowledgeof thoseerasto mostwith an interest. It comescomplete with monochromeimagesof someof the shakersand moversin bandsduringthe 79 revivalperiod. Therearescansof someof the recordlabels, morethan a few of which are ultra-rarecollector's items, alongwith, whereapplicable, reproductionsof picture sleevesof someof the featuredtracks. Whichis wherethe vast majority of Stuart Owen'snew, coffeetable-style hardbackbookis focused. After all, althoughscootershavebeenpopularwith certainelementsof societyduringdifferent decades, it's the UK wherescootershave maintainedconstantpopularitysincethe '50s. It's whereand whenthe originsof customisingbegan, althoughbackthen, it wasmorepersonalisationin comparison to the levelsof modificationthat would developin earnestovertime, to what would nowbe acknowledgedas genuine 'customscooters'. Arguably, it wasthe next decade, from the mid-Seventiesto the mid-Eighties,whencustomscooters reallybeganto establishthemselves, and as severalrecognisablecustomscooter sub-genreentities, each havingdeveloped its own identity. Cut downs, full blown, choppers, streetracers- includingthe innovativeout-of-necessitystreet racer Vespasfrom Teutoniccountries-were amongthem. Of course, the mid-Eighties and beyondhasseencustomscootersbe perceivedoutsideof the scooterscene as the worksof art that certainlysomeof them are. A plethoraof full-colour imagesof someof the most iconic, best-lovedand fondlyrememberedcustomscootersare includedin Stuart'sexcellentlywritten and presentedbook. Of course, not every singlefavouritecustomscooteras loved by everyindividualis featured; conversely there are morethan a few of my favesfrom acrossthe decadestoo.
