Welcome to the May edition of Scootering

W

hat a year 2019 is set to be. There are so many anniversaries for clubs, DJs, bands, scooter models. It makes it a difficult choice to decide which articles to feature. This month we make mention of Leicester Phoenix SC, who are celebrating their 40th anniversary, as well as legendary Wigan Casino DJ Dave Evison, who is celebrating 50 years in the music business! That number puts Dave in good company, as Stu Owen takes a look at 50 years of the Lambretta Grand Prix. As Stu points out, half a century has passed since Innocenti released its final piece of scooter design, one which has endured the test of time and achieved legendary status. A certain GP in particular, t though, which I am delighted m to see back on the custom scene, is our very own ‘Scooterotica’. That is certainly a machine which I thought would never be back on the roads, but I was wrong (not for the first time). See the full story on page 28.

Anniversaries and celebrations aside, the rest of the mag is also, once again, looking mighty good. The cover scooter, also a GP, which fits in nicely with this month’s theme, is an absolute stunner. A relative newcomer to the scooter scene, Darryl has certainly not let that detail prevent him from putting together a show stopping scooter, one which pays homage to the late, great Ayrton Senna. We have a plethora of submissions for Show Us Your Scooters, which meant we had to stretch it to six pages for the first time ever. You may also have noticed that over the past year our good friend, the Italian Stallion Christian Giarrizzo, did not submit so much work as usual. His Italian accent and broken English helped to shine through in his passionate view of the scooter world, and he misse by many. Now he’s back from was missed his traavels, and the stories of his advventures are coming in thick and fasst… so this month we featured tw wo of them, just to try and c catch up! Anyway, that’s enough of my ramblings, it’s another belter this month. Enjoy the issue. D Dan

KICKSTART OXFORD PARKA A

I’m not a big fan of Parkas. That’s actually quite an understatement. So when I heard that Oxford had brought out a Parka-style scooter jacket, I wasn’t at all impressed. However… my personal opinion is that it’s not so much a Parka at all, but more a full-length scooter jacket, and a good one at that. I’ve been trying one out and it’s rammed with features such as Oxford’s Rainseal Tech, making it a good all-round performer. It’s lightweight, waterproof and breathable, and has a removable hood and a high neckline to give extra wind and weather protection, with or without the hood. The Parka also features a storm flap on the inside with bar tacks to prevent weather ingress in poor conditions, and is secured with a zip. Abrasion-resistant panels made from 100% nylon on the shoulder and elbows make this a tough jacket that will easily handle a daily commute. The jacket is provided with CE level 1 protectors to shoulders and elbows, and a tailored pocket for the accessory back protector for that extra level of protection. A snap fastener is provided at the bottom of the jacket, plus a shortened zip, which is a must for a long jacket. This allows the wearer to sit down when riding. Fleece-lined hand warmer pockets are featured on the chest, with two large, water-resistant box pockets and additional hand warmer pockets lower down the front of the jacket. The cuffs have two levels of adjustment via press studs, and a reflective fold-out panel to really make the

wearer visible at night from the side. There is a Lycra sleeve gaiter included to stop wind going up the sleeve. It also features a quilted thermal liner (fixed) with polyester filling for the body and sleeves. RRP: £159.99 For more info: www.oxfordriderwear.com

SIP PERFORMANCE BRAKE SHOES Effective braking is not only important for faster or more powerful forms of transport. The safety of the rider and other road users can depend on good brakes, even when travelling at lower speeds. The SIP Premium and the SIP Performance enable immense improvement of the scooter’s braking, with the assistance of softer frictional materials. This also dramatically upgrades rider safety, without having to add components exotic to the appearance of your vintage scooter. Alongside the softer consistency, they are also more resistant to fading at the high temperatures attained during use. These brake shoes remain effective and reliable, even during long mountain pass descents, when compared to standard types. They also show a good relative wear to braking performance ratio. Both the Premium and Performance lines are available to fit a variety of scooter models, including both Vespa large/small frames and Lambretta. More info: www.sip-scootershop.com

PINASCO KITS FOR VINTAGE VESPA ‘WIDE FRAME’ MODELS Available in either rotary valve induction or reed valve induction, the cylinder kits are manufactured from aluminium with a Nicasilplated bore and have a capacity of 160cc. The head has been upgradeed to use a five-stud configuration to secure it to the cylinder, and is to be Rotaryy valve used with a 57mm stroke crankshaft. Both cylinder kits are suitable for fitment to the wide frame Vespa models that use a three-stud cylinder configuration. More info: www.ve-uk.com

INSURANCE Q&A This information is provided by Stephen Hattersley of WildWood Legal, a firm of solicitors specialising in claims for injured scooterists. Stephen, a qualified solicitor for 25 years has been riding scooters for over 30 years, and has acted for injured riders across the UK. He knows the tricks and pitfalls that insurers use and pulls no punches in his dealings with them. He rides to work every day and understands the challenges you face out there. Q: I was knocked off my scooter recently and was badly injured. The vehicle that hit me did not stop and the Police have not been able to trace it. Is there any way I can make a claim? A: Sorry to hear that and hope you are ok. The good news is that you should still be able to make a claim through the Motor Insurers Bureau (MIB). This is an organisation funded by insurers, who will deal with claims in such circumstances. They cover two scenarios:

1: Where the driver is untraced (as in your case) 2: Where the driver is traced, but has no insurance cover. Pursuing the MIB is a little different from going against a regular insurer and there are pitfalls for the unwary. Make sure you instruct a specialist firm that know what they are doing. If you need advice on a scooter-related legal question, email stephen@wildwoodlegal.co.uk. The best Q&A will be published in Scootering magazine in confidence.

CAMLAM FAST FLOW SIP SPORTSEAT BLACK S EDITION FOR VESPA GTS SIP Seat Covers complement the overall look neatly, whilst providing the scooter with a more sporting, racy appearance. The seating surface is made of a vinyl material in a quilted cross-hatched design; its flanks from an artificial suede. The various elements are stitched together using a black thread. These covers are carefully hand made and then applied to the seats, which guarantees a perfect quality and fit. More info: www.sip-scootershop.com

This is the new fuel tap from Cambridge Lambretta, with lower filter length which is the same as original, so you don’t go on to reserve as quickly as the older style. New metal connection sleeve, giving more strength. Still the same price, £9.99 plus p&p. More info: www.lambretta.co.uk

COMFORTABLE CLASSIC Based just outside Mansfield, British clothing manufacturers RST have an enviable reputation amongst sports motorcyclists for providing high quality clothing at affordable prices. For 2019 the company are casting their eyes towards the rider of classic machines with a selection of more traditional designs. Amongst these is their Classic TT Wax jacket. Made from heavy-duty water resistant 12oz wet wax cotton, the jacket also features CE approved armour, three inner pockets, four outer pockets, press stud neck closures and a removable thermal lining. The lining also celebrates RST’s close relationship with the TT Races, being finished in Manx tartan. Designed in-house and produced at RST’s own factory, the TT jacket exudes quality and Stan reports our test sample as being “the most comfortable jacket I’vve worn in years”. The TT will be travelling with Stan on his epic Poland trip, giving ample opportunity to establish its credentials as a jacket suitable for those in search of comfortable, but practical riding kit. RRP: £169.99 www.rst-moto.com

ULTIMATE HEARING PROTECTION At some point we’ve all stepped off a scooter and struggled to hear clearly, yet the prospect of permanently damaging our hearing is something very few of us stop to consider. Tests conducted by the University of Portsmouth revealed that at speeds over 40mph the noise generated by air flowing over a rider’s helmet exceeds that generated by the engine and riders are routinely exposed to noise levels of over 90dB. Of course, those figures are based on production machines and don’t even begin to take into account the effects of riding with a baffle-less Fresco! Putting all of that into perspective, at 80dB an employer must provide hearing protection and at 85dB protection must be worn. Fortunately, the solution to avoiding permanent hearing loss is straightforward, inexpensive and painless. At their base in Orpington, UltimateEar has been producing hearing protection for motorcyclists since 2001. Manufactured in anti-microbial medical grade silicone, their products are safe to wear for long periods, extremely easy to keep clean and will last until the growth of the user’s ears affect their ability to use the ear plugs, usually around four to five years. Unlike off-the-shelf products, UltimateEar’s plugs are custom made and although that does mean visiting one of their nationwide fitting centres for ear impressions to be taken, UltimateEar claim that these are “the most effective and comfortable custom-made hearing protection available”. Available in a variety of specs up to their flagship Bluetooth compatible units, Stan’s been fitted with a set of the basic plugs and will report on their effectiveness later in the season. RRP: From £65 www.ultimateear.com

BANISH TYRE GREMLINS As the season draws closer it’s time to pack those essential tools and for riders using tubeless tyres, that must include a repair kit. Comprising everything that’s needed for a hasty roadside repair, Gear Gremlin’s repair kit comes complete with instructions and a handy storage case. A puncture can happen to anyone, but with the Gear Gremlin Kit there’s really no excuse for being stranded. RRP: £29.95

STORM M FORCE Having used Oxford’s basic range of waterproofs for several years, Stan’s looking forward to testing their latest Stormseal range. Although he’s slightly too tall for the one-piece suit, the matched pair of trousers and jacket seem to fit well. With a fully meshed liner to keep sweat at bay, water-resistant taped seams, adjustable openings and high visibility details, they promise to be both comfortable and effective in use. The jacket also features a foldaway hood, meaning that it’s also practical for use out of the saddle. RRP: From £39.99 www.oxfordproducts.com
