92 | SCOOTERING | APRIL 2014
WELCOME
W
elcome to the April edition of Scootering which hopefully, after the recent couple of months won’t bring with it the April showers! Yes, for many of us, flood waters aside, it’s been a mild winter, meaning all-year riding has been warmer this time, if a little moist. Whether you’re an all-season rider, or just out in the spring and summer months, we have an ESSENTIAL 13 page guide beginning on page 98 about scooter security. ‘It isn’t a dirty word,’ as they said in Blackadder, but it is essential if you want your pride and joy to be there when you get back to where you left it. We’ve tested a couple of vehicle trackers to see how they work on scooters, spoken to a victim of scooter theft, looked at home security and talked to an insurance expert too. The article also contains lots of hints and tips for securing your scooter both home and away, as well as there being a competition on page 108 to win scooter insurance worth up to £250, which will be a help to anyone I’m sure.
Elsewhere this month there’s a wonderful interview with Motown singer Brenda Holloway, we have some truly amazing scooters from the custom Lambretta Maroon Machine to the jaw-dropping 33hp of a Vespa 50N, as well as going touring with Sticky on his Honda powered Lambretta, improving the headlights of a Series 3, and a roundup of the first events of 2014. Enjoy.
Next month...
... we’ll be taking a closer look at scooter suspension, which is more than just a springy thing you have fitted at either end of your scooter. We also have an exclusive first ride of a new scooter in the pipeline (but can’t say too much at this stage I’m afraid), a Model A Lambretta with some rare features as well as a couple more fantastic custom scooters to get up close and personal with – among many other things of course. See you then!

Meet the men who love Lamb chops
If you were among the thousands that attended the Isle of Wight scooter rally last year you probably noticed a larger than usual gathering of Lambretta choppers. This was no freak of nature, but a planned occasion...
A
fter forming at the end of 2012 the Lambretta Chopper Owners Club decided the IoW National Scooter Rally would be the best place to bring its multi-regional membership together for a mass meet and display.
In all 14 members lined up outside the ice rink after the custom show for a photoshoot, and then brought the town to a standstill as they set off for a blast up the seafront, much to the bemusement of the gathered crowds. Made up of rally regulars, born-agains and even new bloods; the LCOC is a
POLINI VESPA PX200 EVOLUTION EXHAUST After a less than breathtaking result for its ancient stamped steel exhaust in our last PX200 exhaust test, Polini has updated its catalogue for the Vespa to include a beautiful pressed and cone-formed pipe in the same layout. Sadly the cost has almost trebled as a result, to a hefty €350 plus VAT. www.polini.com
Lambretta Bol d’Or Racer
An apology to Lee Parr of Parrspeed in Chorley for omitting his name from our article a couple of months back on the Lambretta Bol d’Or racer. Although the scooter has moved on since the photos were taken, Lee was the owner at the time of the shoot, having purchased it from Nick Tolley after it was discovered at the parts fair in Milan, and we neglected to mention that at all. Sorry Lee!

collective of Lambretta chopper riders who found themselves linked together by the infamous use of the angle grinder and hacksaw. Although in this age of internet domination much of their organising has to be done via the computer, the main aim is to meet up and show off constructions at as
The right nuts
Those who use their scooters for long distance ‘touring’ will know the importance of having things consistent. For instance needing one tool to remove the chaincase instead of a mixture of Allen bolts and hex heads makes things slightly easier at the side of the road when carrying out emergency repairs. Likewise with the flywheel cowling, having a couple of bolts that are the standard M5 (8mm spanner), a couple more tapped out to M6 (10mm spanner) and the odd one a self tapping screw from an MFI kitchen circa 1978 is
downright infuriating for the club member tasked with fixing it on the hard shoulder while you enjoy a nice relaxing smoke and plead innocence about how they got there. Remember; if it’s annoying when you try to work on it in the garage, it will be 10 times worse at the side of the road. Stop being a tit and get it sorted before you venture out.
many events as possible. With this philosophy numbers have quickly swelled, and a recent count saw more than 70 riders under the flag. They are also affiliated to the LCGB and therefore appreciate benefits this gives too. So what are the criteria to become a member of this self professed ‘Band of Brothers’? First, you need to have, or be seriously building a Lambretta-engined based chop. Trick frames are welcomed but the power unit must be from one of the Lambretta factories. Next, you need to apply for membership via the website, or befriend an existing member and be forwarded by them and then seconded by
another. Although this may sound elitist, the LCOC has found it a good way of weeding out dreamers and scammers! The club understands the benefits of the cyber age, and has both a website and quarterly newsletter to keep people informed of club business and rideouts/rallies/shows that are planned in the calendar. The website is also a point of sale for club related merchandise such as patches, stickers, T-shirts and hoodies. The attached forum is an excellent place to gain build information and tips from those that have been there and done/tried that. Once a member you also have access to a designated Facebook page, closed to public
Bike Status Check
PUSH & BLOCK We found this interesting security lock being marketed at the Milan Motorcycle Show in November by DIX. The idea is not new one – to install a device so that you can lock the scooter’s stand ‘down’ when parked, therefore making it harder to push away – but equally I’ve not seen one mass marketed as an accessory for numerous scooters either. Designed to be so simple to use that even a lady in high heels can do it without damaging her Jimmy Choos, there are currently versions available for various Honda
domain. It means that although talk can be ‘fruity’ you are not bombarded with irrelevant spam and people who went to one event back in 1985 trying to tell you Exile was pink! This year members are again planning an official club meet similar to last year’s IoW (venue TBC), and have been asked to do a chopper presentation at several events including BWM rally in June. They will also be hitting the road at many local and national events – ridden not hidden! If this seems like your type of thing, you can contact the LCOC via the website (www.lambrettachoppers.co.uk). Dave O

Bike insurance specialist Bennetts, has launched the Bike Status Check, a vehicle history check specifically for motorcycles, starting at just £2.99. With one in three vehicles checked having a hidden history, bike buyers need to avoid the risk of buying a motorcycle with something to hide. Is it on finance? Is it currently recorded as stolen? Is it a write-off? Is it legitimate? Powered by vehicle information expert HPI, the Bike
Status Check offers used bike buyers three levels of protection. Silver offers the history essentials plus vehicle details, while Gold offers both of those, plus ownership details. Platinum includes the history check, as well as finance details. It also comes with a £10,000 guarantee protecting used bike buyers against loss, as a result of inaccurate or incomplete information supplied by the Platinum Bike Status Check. www.bennetts.co.uk
Vespa PX disc locks Trying to find a decent disc lock (by decent we mean not made of cheese, KitKat wrappers, or crappy cast ali that shatters if you drop it from just 6in) for a Vespa PX disc is harder than you may think, due to the nature of the disc being situated within the 10in wheel rims. However, Spanish company Artago told us at the Milan show in 2013 that it is currently developing a new disc lock for the PX disc. Despite showing us a prototype in Italy, they don’t expect the finished item to be available until early summer. Fingers crossed…

Maroon Machine
The scooter you see here gets its name and theme from the BritishArmy’s Parachute Regiment and its distinctive head-wear.
SCOOTERIST MELTDOWN
R
KALKAR,germany
hubarb schnapps offered as a welcome has never tasted so good as when we pulled up to the disused nuclear power station after five hours riding in torrential rain and battered by an epic tailwind. How windy? – enough to put two of the Notts Gatecrashers in hospital after they were blown off their Vespa on the Dutch motorway. Get well soon folks. Large contingents from Stoke SC, Indecipherables, Big 7, Minorities and several other British clubs braved the weather on two wheels along with a few Germans. Mad Italian Giacomo Salici, who is still living the scooterist dream, rode from the UK and took a deserved best ridden scooter in Saturday’s custom show. Of course the novelty of Meltdown is that after the welcome drink all the others are free as well, along with all your food and accommodation in the €200 admission price. One reprobate explained their thinking: the first beer cost them €200 but after two the price was only €100 each. Their stated goal for the weekend was to reduce the average beer price to 25 cents; which would then be more VFM than a Johnny Bolland voucher book. This year the entire complex was occupied by more than 1000 ravenous scooterists from as far away as Norway. In terms of the scooterist lifestyle I don’t think that there are any European countries that haven’t been infected by this bug at some stage, but Germany is easily the biggest behind Britain. In the last decade it seems that there have been ever fewer opportunities for face-to-face interaction, so Meltdown performs an important function in terms of cultural cross-fertilisation. Certainly there are still plenty of hot-looking German scooter girls that British scooterboys wouldn’t mind cross-fertilising…
54 | SCOOTERING | APRIL 2014
Friday’s entertainment in the traditional main room (cruelly nicknamed ‘World of Leather’ by certain Brits) was supplied by a lucky bag of German and British DJs and beer-soaked dancers, while Speed Demons SC took charge of the alternative room equipped this year with a truly wonderful laser show. Quite how a pair of ladies knickers made their way onto the glitter-ball of the main room has yet to be adequately explained. The chief improvement to the formula this year was moving the daytime custom show and parts fair to a freshly built hall at the rear of the complex decorated once again like a black hole’s armpit. There, everything you needed was under one roof: parking for the ridden scooters in the well-stocked custom show, comprehensive dealers’ market, burger counter and a bottomless free bar. And an electric bull for people to humiliate and injure themselves on; which even the drunks seemed wary of. After a trophy presentation and dinner, all that remained was to get on the sauce for another evening of mayhem. This time the Darkside handled the downstairs entertainment from a DJ set-up that looked like a display at an Apple Store. In the main room things remained staunchly old-school. I believe the DJs may even have dug up some of those black vinyl disc things from a museum somewhere. How quaint! Sunday was only ever going to hurt, and riding back to Calais against a ferocious headwind made it a test of endurance. Why do we do this to ourselves? Because when others are just having a weekend at home, we are out having an adventure and getting nuclear wasted with mates from all over Europe. Is that so wrong? Sticky
THE BIG QUESTION Are there any other lifestyles where people routinely carry and fit new pistons to their vehicles in order to get home? At the back of the custom show the Indecipherables had one of their Collective’s TS1 in pieces replacing not only a holed piston but also a damaged V-Force reedblock. Dom, the Lambretta’s owner, watched while his mates rebuilt it… Dom, what precautions did you make for potential bad weather when riding to Germany in February? I put a coat on! No other special provisions? Yes, only one boot. The other one fell off my bike at Morrisons in Harwich and a guy off the boat had to go back a mile to get it for me. That was the start of my bad weekend. How did it get worse from there? Well I had a bit of a lie-in on the ferry and was the last vehicle off it so two of us had to ride through Holland on our own. When I eventually caught up with the others they were in a petrol station and they made me rush by starting their bikes up. Through rushing, I may have inadvertently put a bit of diesel in my scooter. How much diesel? About 15 litres, and rather a lot of two-stroke oil. It ran all right for about 20km then there was a loud bang and it holed a piston. So how did you sort it? Well after five hours waiting in a petrol station they came to get me in Toot’s van. Now I’m having to watch them fix it while feeling a little bit sick. Against all odds, Dom’s bodgerepaired scooter made it back to the UK under its own steam. Aren’t good mates wonderful!

SCOOTER SECURITY HOW SAFE IS
YOURS?
While there will always be scumbags out there who think it’s their god-given right to steal what you’ve worked hard to earn, there’s no reason to make it easy for them.
I
n an ideal world all such lowlifes would inhabit an island together, located in the arse end of nowhere where they would spend the rest of their days constantly robbing each other blind and then having their stolen contraband nicked again. With any luck they’d also repeatedly step on upturned 3-pin electrical plugs in their bare feet and once a year that island would be invaded by a plague of ravenous, rabid attack dogs. Sadly this is not the case so, as often happens, it’s the innocent majority who have spend time and money protecting their own possessions. But with a bit of research first you can often minimise your costs one way or another.
Forethought and Facebook
Prevention is better than cure so, before anything else, ask yourself, are you making it too easy for thieves to strike? As Sticky mentioned in last month’s ‘Scooter Touring Guide’, is it really essential that you announce to the world on Facebook that you’re riding your Vespa to Italy for three weeks this summer? It always amazes me just how much information people post on the internet, some believing it is secure, others (presumably) ignorant of it all. As a little experiment, I looked at some of my friends’ friends on Facebook, people I don’t know at all. Picking those with a photo of a scooter as a profile image, within 10
minutes I was fairly confident I knew the street where three out five of these people lived. How? Everything you or friends post can be tracked if you’re not careful, from tagged photos to places you visit. There are even apps that show your Sunday morning cycle route from door to door. One chap even stated he’ll be at the Isle of Wight rally this August (he can’t ride both his scooters there). Thanks to Google Street View maps, I can now cross reference the photo of a scooter outside a house to confirm my guess at the address. If you don’t believe me, try it yourself – and then tighten up the privacy on your own profile page. Isn’t modern technology wonderful? Andy
