Watchout,watchout– there’sbargainsabout! It’s always an exciting time of the year during this period, when the manufacturers and importers announce their new models for the coming season. We are bombarded with information as these companies put their own PR spin on their latest or upgraded model ranges. But if you have an eye for a bargain – and are not necessarily interested in being one of the first to own one of the latest machines at a premium price – then there are plenty of other interesting (and cost effective) options to be found. For this is the time of year when these self-same manufacturers discount the prices of their existing model ranges, in order to make way for the incoming stock. This year is certainly no exception to that rule, and if you compare the new bike prices that are shown in the Which Bike section of this magazine, and compare it to those in the last edition, you’ll see exactly what I mean. Those savings can mount up to several hundreds of pounds of what will still be a brand-new bike; it might not have all the latest bells and whistles, but there are still bargains to be had. The other thing to bear in mind is that if the manufacturers are intent on clearing out this stock, then other incentives may be on offer as well. A years’ free insurance, a 0% finance deal, or maybe a free helmet or other clothing chucked in for good measure. And while we’re touching on the subject of clothing (or other bike-related accessories for that matter), there are bargains to be had in those areas as well. So the message here is to keep your eyes and ears open and if you find a real bargain, why not let us know about it, so that we can share the information with other readers.

Happycommutersride A survey has revealed 87.9% of bike commuters are happier when arriving at work on two wheels than using other forms of transport. The report also found that 67.8% of survey participants

are convinced that commuting to work on two wheels has a positive effect on their readiness to approach work tasks. The research, carried out by Bennetts Insurance, asked

participants to reflect on their best and worst journeys to work and consequently unveiled motorcycling to have the most positive effect on an individual’s happiness.

The latest THINK campaign is being supported by WSB rider Chaz Davies and UK comedian Alan Davies. They both feature in the latest film which encourages riders to undertake further training to improve their safety, and are joined by eight other regular riders who have been recruited via Facebook and other media. The films will appear on the ‘Think Biker’ Facebook page and also on YouTube; they feature the riders completing a further training course which covers the main principles of advanced riding.

PRODUCTS London Emission Zone to include bikes

As part of the move to ‘at least halve’ emissions of Nitrogen Oxide (NOx) and particulate matter from vehicle exhausts, Transport for London (TfL) has proposed an Ultra Low Emission Zone, that could take effect starting from September 2020. This zone would include Powered Two Wheel vehicles for the first time (PTWs are exempt from the existing Low Emission Zone as well as the Congestion Charge). TfL believes many vehicles will already be compliant by then, so all motorcycles and similar vehicles up to and including 13 years old (so 2007 onwards) would not have to pay a charge. But older motorcycles and scooters that did not comply with the standards would face a daily charge of £12.50. Non-compliant HGVs, buses and coaches would pay £100 per day. DIYhelpfor Peugeotowners Help is on the way for Peugeot scooter owners, as Haynes Publishing is about to release its latest home workshop manual. Due out at the end of December, the manual (book reference 5751) will cover Peugeot V-Clic, Speedfight, Vivacity, Kisbee and Tweet scooter models built between 2008 and 2014. It will be available from the usual Haynes

outlets. Keep an eye on the Haynes website (www.haynes.co.uk) for more information, which should be available shortly. To tie in with this, T&G will be running a competition in the next issue where readers will get the chance of winning one of five copies of this new book in a free-to-enter readers’ competition – so watch out for that one.

Tax disc rules still unclear to many A survey by UK numberplate manufacturer GBShowPlates.co.uk shows that the recent mass changes to tax disc rules went unnoticed by 35% of 25-34 year olds. Registration plates are now used to assess whether a vehicle owner is up to date with their tax payments – and anyone looking to buy or sell a vehicle also needs to be aware of the implications of the new rules. The survey also found that ages 55-64 were the most ‘switched-on’ age group, with all respondents fully aware that they no longer need to display a tax disc. Men were also more aware of the changes than women, with 87.9% of men fully aware of the changes compared to

86.1% of women. 50% of Londoners also stated that they had no idea about the amendments. The survey shows that, while the notices about the policy amendments have been picked up by most, there are still those who are unaware that their numberplates are being scanned to pick up their tax, insurance and MoT status. The DVLA now keeps track of who has paid their taxes through an electronic road tax database, which is monitored via ANPR cameras trained on numberplates. Anyone can now enter a vehicle registration number and check its tax status, and all payments are taken online, reducing the administrative duties of the DVLA team.

Dartford Crossing users could face fines Beware of being caught on camera and fined, as Britain’s busiest toll road dispenses with traditional toll-booths. From November 30, 2014, the Dartford Crossing over the M25 will operate a ‘free flow’ system without barriers. While motorcycles and scooters will remain exempt, many bike owners also have the use of a car and could be caught out by the new ruling. Instead of handing over the fee at the barriers, motorists must pay online or by phone before they use the crossing, or on an electronic system, ‘Dart Charge’ (similar to that used for the London Congestion Charge). Vehicles passing north through the two tolled tunnels (or south across the Queen Elizabeth Bridge) will have their numberplates filmed by up to 18 ‘ANPR’ cameras which will police the system. If a car driver fails to pay the new £2.50 toll (up

50p from the current cost of £2), he or she will be fined automatically up to £105. Failure to pay online or by phone by midnight of the following day will, when ‘free-flow’ goes live, result in a penalty charge of £35 (if paid within 14 days), £70 (up to 28 days) and £105 thereafter. Many unwitting drivers will be caught out – especially if they are only occasional users. Mistakes on the ANPR numberplate recognition system could also mean many drivers being unfairly penalised. The Highways Agency says all profits from tolling will go to the Treasury but must, by law, be spent on transport-related projects. However, the cost of the tolled crossing was paid off in 2003, but the toll continued because the Government said a continued charge was necessary to ‘restrict demand’.

Bikers know more about road safety Motorcyclists’ knowledge of road safety is almost twice as good as that of car drivers, a new study has revealed. More than 60% of riders know what the safe stopping distance is in rainy conditions at 30mph – 150ft – compared to 34% of motorists. And those on two wheels are also much better at recognising road signs, according to the poll by motorbike insurance company, Carole Nash. Two thirds of motorcyclists (67%) recognised the sign for the end of a

dual carriageway, whereas just 37% of drivers got the answer right. Given 12 road signs to identify, car drivers finished behind riders in eight categories. Motorcyclists were best on ‘dual carriageway ends’, ‘junction on bend ahead’, ‘minimum speed’ and ‘road narrows on both sides’. Their knowledge also proved better on ‘motor vehicles only’, ‘start of motorway’, ‘slippery road’ and ‘maximum speed’. Car drivers scored best on ‘no motor vehicles’ and ‘end of controlled parking zone.’

New safety strategy launched ACEM, the European Association of Motorcycle Manufacturers, has unveiled its new road safety strategy. The document sets out the European motorcycle industry’s commitment to road safety and proposes further improvements through an integrated approach which covers vehicle technology, training and infrastructure safety. As part of the strategy, the motorcycle industry has signed a Memorandum of Understanding on cooperative Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS), i.e. safety systems that allow for communication between vehicles and between vehicles and infrastructure. ACEM members commit to have at least one of their models available for sale with a cooperative ITS feature by 2020. The industry will also carry out research on an eCall system for motorcycles, i.e. a system that generates emergency calls from a crashed vehicle instantly after a collision has occurred.

The European Association of Motorcycle Manufacturers will also organise a series of workshops in different European countries to identify and promote measures to improve road safety at national, regional and local levels. These meetings will bring together key stakeholders including public authorities and riders’ organisations. The areas to be discussed will include, among others, development of more effective safety policies, design and maintenance of road infrastructure, and promotion of compliance with traffic rules. ‘The safe ride to the future’, builds on previous safety initiatives such as ACEM members’ commitment to voluntarily fit all of their new vehicles with automatic headlamps on, the signing of the European Road Safety Charter and the decision to fit 75% of street motorcycle models with an advanced braking systems as an option or as standard fitting by 2015, in advance of respective regulatory requirements.

It’s that time of year when the manufacturers announce their new and exciting models for 2015 – and with Intermot, EICMA and Motorcycle Live all taking place within a few weeks of each other, they’ve had plenty of opportunities across Europe to do just that. Here’s a quick look at what could shortly be coming to a showroom near you... HONDA FORZA 125 Honda has announced a brand-new Forza 125 with a height adjustable windshield, 48 litres of storage room – enough for two full-face helmets – a 12v power socket and an LED head and tail-light. According to Honda, the scooter is “designed for the highway ability and comfort of larger capacity maxi scooters, with the traffic-beating, sport acceleration and easy-to-park utility of smaller, lighter machines”. The new 125cc liquid-cooled engine produces 14bhp with a peak torque of 8.9lb-ft. Honda claims 123mpg from the 162kg machine and its 11.5 litre tank. The engine is a four-valve unit with an intake and exhaust system designed for strong midrange and top end power. The steel frame employs 33mm telescopic forks and 7-stage adjustable twin rear shock absorbers. A 15in front wheel is backed up by a 14in rear. There are single disc brakes on the front and rear and ABS comes as standard. A number of accessories are available including rear carrier, 35 litre colour-matched top box and heated grips. NEW GENERATION MOTO GUZZI V7 II The V7 II has had several revisions including two-channel ABS braking, traction control, six-speed gearbox with revised clutch actuation, lower seat height and footpegs. The engine has been tilted 4° to the front and lowered by 10mm to increase knee room too. The power output is still 45bhp (34kW) so is A2 licence compliant. Three versions are available: V7 II Stone in four matt colours (£7134), V7 II Special in three colours (£7634) and the V7 II Racer with a chrome tank (£8534). All prices are on the road. A2 COMPLIANT YAMAHA SUPERSPORT BIKE

Described as a lightweight SuperSport bike for everyday use, the Yamaha YZF-R3 brings an all-new 320cc parallel-twin motor to the R125, R6 and R1 line-up. ABS comes as standard on the A2 compliant machine. It produces 42bhp, 22lb-ft of torque and has a 14 litre fuel tank. The introduction of the new model has presented Yamaha with an opportunity to create a new model that offers an ideal step up from the YZF-R125. The YZF-R3 is powered by an all-new, 321cc inline twin-cylinder four-stroke dohc 4-valve engine, which has been designed with everyday riding in mind and is said to have good low to mid-speed rideability. The machine includes technology taken from the larger capacity supersport bikes – including the design of the valve drive mechanism. The R3 is equipped with a newly designed steel diamond-type tubular frame – the wet weight of the machine is 169kg and has a weight balance of 50/50 for predictable

handling. There are 17in wheels and disc brakes on the front and rear, a Monocross rear suspension system on the rear and 41mm diameter front forks. The dash includes an analogue tachometer, a digital speedometer, a gear position indicator, fuel gauge, water temperature gauge and fuel economy information, clock, tripmeters and more. It also features a shift timing indicator lamp similar to the design used on the YZF-R1. The R3 will be in dealers from April 2015 –

SUZUKI ADDRESS 110 New to the UK and European markets, Suzuki’s street-smart all-rounder claims to be more than a stylish commuter with a 20.6 litre luggage compartment which can fit in a full-face helmet and riding gear and return 119mpg. Hitting dealerships early spring 2015, the Address features a 5.2 litre fuel tank, a rear handbrake. It has a new fuel injection system, redesigned body work and cast aluminium wheels. As well as the storage space under the seat and two compartments on the leg shield, there’s a carry hook too as well as a rear carrier which comes as standard. The ignition is covered to prevent theft and can be used to pop the seat as well as turn the machine on. Genuine accessories for the Address 110 include a rear top case, windscreen, knuckle

REDESIGN FOR THE YAMAHA TMAX – AND A SPECIAL EDITION

The popular 530cc two-cylinder four-stroke Yamaha Tmax maxiscooter has been redesigned, with new LED dual headlights, a new front cowl, 41mm upside down forks, radial four-pot calipers, a 12v power socket and a keyless ignition/immobiliser. The Tmax IronMax is a special edition with gold forks and caliper caps, exclusive seat, matt black wheels and aluminium footplates. The engine is unchanged in both machines, still offering 46bhp @ 6750rpm and 34lb-ft @ 5250rpm. When the original Tmax was launched in 2001, it caused the European marketplace to sit up and take notice. The era of the maxi-scooter had arrived, and over the past decade the Tmax has gone on to become one of the most enduring and successful models ever created by Yamaha, with more than 200,000 units sold. KTM EXTENDS ELECTRIC RANGE – AND INCLUDES DEDICATED CITY MACHINE Using the same battery-powered drive technology as the KTM Freeride E-SX and E-XC, but with sticky 17in tyres, the single-gear Freeride E-SM is targeted directly at city riders, with a claimed runtime of up to one hour. Apparently, “the dream of a technically mature, environmentally friendly sport bike that is great fun on every surface has finally come true”. KTM has announced three additions to its electric KTM Freeride R range, which are available in Europe for the first time. Each bike is run by a brushless, permanent magnet synchronous motor which is powered by a lithium-ion battery with a 2.6 kWh capacity. The high

torque electric motor only needs a single drive ratio and no gearbox. Power peaks at 21.5bhp and there is a choice of three riding modes. The battery provides up to an hour of power. KTM claims that the Freeride ESM is “a lot more than just an electric enduro with street tyres. It is a completely new category of motorcycle”. It differs from the KTM Freeride E-XC, among others, in that it has smaller wheels with sticky, nearly treadless rubber. It is also geared taller for higher speeds, and its suspension is specially tuned to its urban purpose. Info: www.ktm.com/gb

UPDATED LEXMOTO FM 50 Priced at £799, the new FM 50 from Lexmoto features a four-stroke, single cylinder, air-cooled engine. It has an updated look, 12in wheels, modern LED lights and a fuel capacity of 4.6 litres. It’s belt driven and the engine produces 3.4bhp (2.15kW) @ 7500rpm and 2.2lb-ft (2.95Nm) @ 6500rpm of torque. There are disc brakes on the front and rear and suspension is provided in the form of telescopic forks on the front and a single shock absorber on the rear.

KAWASAKI’S NEW Z300 AND Z250SL Based on the Ninja 300, the Kawasaki Z300 carries the same 38bhp @11,000rpm / 20lb-ft @10,000rpm 296cc parallel-twin engine in a naked chassis. ABS will be an optional extra, and the new-rider-friendly bikes will feature petal discs, flat bars and 37mm forks. Kawasaki says the new machine appeals to a wide audience “new riders in search of a practical and sporty bike as well as more experience riders looking for a fun and capable daily ride”. At the heart of the Z300 beats the same highly-regarded fuel-injected 296cc parallel twin power plant as in the Ninja 300. Despite its size, the technology used is comparable with the larger machines in the Z family. Among key features are the dual throttle valves and an assist and slipper clutch that reduces clutch lever effort and facilitates slicker down changes. It features a 17 litre fuel tank, a seat height of 785mm and has a wet weight of 168kg – 170kg with ABS. A flat, wide handlebar facilitates active rider control along with the 37mm telescopic fork. At the rear, Kawasaki’s Uni-Trak suspension delivers a smooth ride and stable handling over a wide range of speeds and road conditions. The instrument package which combines a large, analogue-style tachometer with a multi-

function LCD screen with amber LED backlighting. The Z250SL is the latest addition to the Supernaked Z series and has been designed around the sports-minded urban commuter. Powered by a 249cc four-stroke single cylinder engine making 28bhp @ 9700rpm and 17lb-ft @ 8200rpm, mounted in a trellis frame, the newest Z offers sporty performance in a slim, lightweight and compact package.

It features sporty suspension in the form of a 37mm telescopic front fork and 5-way preload adjustable Uni-Trak rear shock. Stopping power of the 290mm front petal disc and 220mm rear petal disc is aided by an optional ABS unit boasting Nissin’s latest cutting edge technology for the motorcycle world. QUADRO – NEW TO THE UK THREE-WHEELER MARKET Clements Moto has announced that it is to be the UK distributor for Quadro, a Swiss-based company, established in 2011 with the goal of developing three and four-wheel scooters which combine the agility of two-wheel vehicles with the safety of four which are currently manufactured in Taiwan, utilising Italian components. The first model scooting its way to the UK is the Quadro 350S – it’s powered by a 346cc single cylinder four-stroke four-valve engine and features adjustable rear suspension, comfortable seating for rider and pillion and three storage compartments. It produces 27bhp @ 7000rpm and 21.2lb-ft @ 5500rpm. It’s equipped with HTS (Hydraulic Tilting System) oleo-pneumatic tilting suspension at the front – an air-oil hydraulic shock

absorber which is sometimes seen in the landing gear of large aircraft – with dual dampers on the rear which allow 100mm of wheel travel. There are disc brakes on the front and rear, 14in tyres on the front and a 15in on the rear. There’s a seat height of 780mm, a dry weight of 200kg and fuel capacity is 13 litres. Colour options will include black, grey and white. April 2015 will see the launch of the Quadro 4 – a scooter with four-wheels. It features the HTS suspension on the front and the rear, produces 29.6bhp (22.1Kw) @ 7500rpm and is belt driven. It boasts a 15 litre fuel tank, integral braking and a 45° tilting

PIAGGIO AND SKULLY HUD HELMET

Thanks to collaboration between the Piaggio Group and Skully (an American heads-up display helmet manufacturer) complete integration will be possible between the functions of the Piaggio Multimedia Platform and the most advanced heads-up display technology. To manage all the information that the PMP can provide – even using voice commands with the helmet on – without ever taking your hands off the handlebars.

SAY HELLO TO MASS PRODUCTION SCOMADIS Following the success of the limited edition Scomadi Turismo Leggera 250 – a hand-built in Britain carbon fibre machine – PM Tuning Racing Products and Scooter Innovation have come together with their combined knowledge of over 60 years and are planning to launch new 50, 125 and 300 models to the mass market. According to the brochure, the range is aimed at “providing a new era in scootering for followers of iconic Italian design”. The whole range is powered by single cylinder, four-stroke, sohc engines – in differing capacities – and have the same dimensions and seat height of 805mm. The 125 produces 9.86bhp @ 7300rpm and the 300 makes 21.7bhp @ 7500rpm – both have disc brakes on the front and rear, whereas the 50cc model has a drum on the rear.

Fuel capacity on the TL50 and TL125 is 11 litres – including a two litre reserve – and the TL300 has 10 litres capacity. Both smaller models are air-cooled and the 300 is liquid-cooled and fuel injected. The first machines to arrive will be the 50cc models priced at £1895. The 125cc will be priced at £2495 and the cost of the 300 version is yet to be confirmed, but will be around £4400. With styling cues taken from the classic Lambretta Grand Prix model, the goal was to create a ‘Modern Classic’. PIAGGIO’S ELECTRIC BIKE Piaggio say its new Electric Bike Project is a ‘completely new vehicle that meets the most advanced needs and the most modern mobility trends.’ It’s powered by a 250-350W electric power unit – designed, developed and built by the Piaggio Group. Its been designed so that it is compact and fits in with the aesthetics of the electric bike. The contactless display features the Piaggio Multimedia Platform technology (PMP) – it’s automatically powered via the NFC near the control unit. The USB connection serves the dual function of being a smartphone charger and software update port. Diagnostics are also possible via smartphone by the rider and the service centre via tablet. The dashboard control unit, batteries and electric motor are all connected – and can only operate if they are connected with each

other – so when parking, by simply removing the display (which operates as an electronic key) it renders the bike unusable. A GPS module is housed in the battery which functions as a satellite antitheft device and a data transmission element for the battery – this means the charge status can be checked and you can receive an alert on your device in the event of a poor charge. The 400Wh ion and lithium battery is housed under the saddle and provides an average range of between 60 – 120 kilometres depending on the mode of use and conditions. It’s belt driven and is fitted with disc brakes on the front and rear – both gripped by hydraulic calipers. The PMP system integrates your smartphone with the bike via Bluetooth. It features navigation services and the chance to

personalise the powertrain operating modes. Unlike conventional electrically pedalassisted bicycles which offer a limited number of pedal assistance level settings – the Piaggio allows the rider to program the assistance level. The system includes ‘back home alert’ which notifies the rider when the battery range is insufficient to return to any preset destination, weather forecasts and functions which allow it to be used as a fitness tool. FOUR NEW ADDITIONS TO THE SINNIS RANGE Sinnis has added to its line-up with three new motorcycles and a 125cc scooter. Info: www.sinnismotorcycles.co.uk

The Shuttle 125 costs £899 (plus OTR) and is the largest big frame budget 125cc scooter in the range. It features a six litre fuel tank, has twin disc brakes and produces 8bhp. It weighs 115kg and has 13in alloy wheels.

Priced at £2200 (plus OTR), The Retrostar has been launched as a 250 (a 125cc version is already in the range). It packs a 249cc air-cooled, single cylinder engine which produces 20.7bhp. Sinnis describe it as having looks ‘for those who want a bit more style and speed in their daily commute.’

The Scrambler has a RRP of £1595 (plus OTR). It’s been designed for the retro market, on the same base as the Sinnis Cafe. The 124cc single cylinder produces maximum power of 8.5Kw@8500rpm, and the bike features a 10 litre fuel capacity and a 107kg wet weight.

With a 14 litre fuel tank, a five-speed gearbox and a 124cc engine which produces 11.1bhp, the Cruisestar has a laid back riding style and high bars – as well as plenty of chrome and detail. It’s priced at £1595 (plus OTR).
