WELCOME

Fromscoot tocommute Riding trends have changed and if you add recent revisions to motorcycle licence legislation into the equation, it becomes clearer that small-to-mid-capacity bikes is the area we need to be concentrating our efforts on – and the feedback we have been receiving from you reflects that. So we are opening up our pages in order to be able to do this. This new look issue of T&G is packed to the gills with such information. We have expanded our coverage of machines to include anything and everything that can be ridden on licences up to – and including – the new A2 UK licence (and believe us, there’s some pretty unusual machinery out there). We also plan to keep you up-to-date with all the latest news, gadgets, clothing and accessories as and when they become available. If all this isn’t enough, we will also offer advice and tips on various subjects such as what to look for when buying new or used machines and even top tips for surviving in an urban environment – in fact, if it’s a subject that is related to buying, running or riding a bike, then we will cover it in future issues of T&G. If you don’t want to miss out on anything, then I’d suggest that it’s time you took out a subscription. We are also doing a special deal at the moment and are offering three issues for £9.99 on direct debit – see page 18 for more information – don’t miss out!

What’s on the cover?

It was a sharp and cold morning when Iggy and Mau took to the roads on a Rieju motorcycle and a WK scooter for this commuter cover shoot. Find out more on page 26.

WHO’SWHO? Mau sPencer

Has been riding bikes since the tender age of 16 (hell that was a long time ago). Mau is a wise, old sage (well, more old than wise) and has been the editor of T&G since 2003. He is also the editor of Classic Scooterist and consequently has a foot in both camps.

sHaun Varga

Shaun has worked his way through all shapes and sizes of motorcycles and scooters since passing his test at the age of 17. He endures a regular 20 mile daily commute each way into central London (but still thinks it beats public transport by a mile!).

4 www.twistngo.com

ian ‘iggy’ grainger

Some say ‘The Ig’ started riding scooters at the age of 15 and never stopped, although his mum still hopes one day he’ll grow up and get a ‘proper’ bike – she’s likely to be disappointed. He’s been a regular contributor to T&G and various bike and scooter magazines since 2003.

Joe dick

Is our staff photographer, so his ugly mug is normally hidden behind a camera, rather than in front of it. Joe has been an enthusiast of two wheels for a while, but has only recently taken his bike test (read about it on page 78) – and now we can’t keep his feet on the ground.

Pete HensHaw

Is the ex-editor of Motorcycle Sport & Leisure (MSL). Pete doesn’t own a car and is happily dependent on two wheel transport – anything powered by petrol, diesel, pedals or slight electrical assistance. He’s a sucker for anything eco friendly or out of the norm.

natHan Millward

Is one of our occasional contributors who has an unhealthy penchant for extremely long and enduring trans-continental rides that can be done on a tight budget (cheapskate). Give him any excuse and he’ll be off around the world at a moment’s notice.

Scoot4kidscompletescharityride We mentioned Scoot4kids in our previous issue and as we go to print, 17 riders have just completed the 1000 mile charity ride from John o’ Groats to Land’s End… on restricted KYMCO 50s! They are raising funds for Manchester Children’s Hospital and the STEPS charity.

Jim Lancaster set up Scoot4kids after his daughter, Fern spent time in the hospital following major surgery. He decided to give something back by getting mates together to raise funds. The lads from Congleton, Cheshire are mostly novice

riders (half hadn’t even ridden a scooter before signing up for the challenge). Vale Motorcycles hired them 17 matching restricted 50cc KYMCO Agility scooters for the ride, lent them a back-up van and also supplied RST waterproofs, spare scooters and spares. The lads have been

raising funds themselves but it’s cost around £650 each for the scooters, fuel, food, accommodation, etc., needed to complete the trip. Donations are still welcome and they’ve got a Facebook page set up ‘Scoot4kids’, or you can donate by visiting http://goo.gl/Ye7Lt

LeoVince price restructure According to importer, VE (UK), the 2013 price restructuring exercise on the entire range of LeoVince scooter exhaust systems, guarantees better value for money without sacrificing the quality expected from the Italian brand. The LeoVince scooter exhaust range caters for automatic scooters from 50cc to 850cc. As the official factory appointed UK importer, VE (UK) stocks the full range of scooter exhausts available from the Italian manufacturer.

Helmet loss survey The Transport Research Laboratory in Berkshire (TRL) is conducting a self-funded research project to try to determine what factors are taken into account by riders when purchasing a new helmet. This survey is part of a wider study into the factors that may cause helmet loss in collisions, leaving the rider without this essential form of protection. Both current and historic accident data suggests that this may occur in about 10% of collisions, and while some of this is due to riders failing to fasten their helmets correctly; there are clearly documented cases of fastened helmets coming loose. Initial findings from the survey responses so far indicate:

Only about 40% of riders have their heads measured at the time of sale – and some have bought helmets that they can pull off, even though they appeared to be a correct fit. This suggests a serious point of sale failure and a lack of understanding by sales staff and purchasers. 30% of users have had issues with helmet fit, often because a particular brand or range is the wrong internal shape. About 15% of helmets are purchased through the internet, producing an enhanced potential for the purchase of a helmet that is the wrong shape or size. The majority of riders have the chin straps loose and can pass either one or two fingers beneath the chinstrap and their chins.

The results of the helmet physical testing and the survey will be freely available from TRL later in the year. In the meantime, all motorcyclists are encouraged to contribute to the survey at http://goo.gl/n1b5s

PACT riders stay safe!

Get ready for the return of the ‘PACT’ campaign, designed to help bikers stay safe on the road in the months ahead. Performance, Air pressure, Condition and Tread, is once again the central theme in a range of posters and other promotional materials which help to raise awareness about the importance of looking after bike tyres. The message is simple – to get the best performance from the bike, whether it is improved handling, grip or fuel economy, riders should make a PACT with their tyres by ensuring they’re properly inflated, in a good condition and have plenty of tread. ESSENTIAL SERVICE

Induction day for the LEBBS volunteers

Blood bikes

Blood bikes have been running in some parts of the UK since the late 1960s, transporting essential medical items between hospitals and healthcare institutions. Currently there are 13 groups covering 32 UK counties. This reaches more than 65% of the country’s population. With planned expansion, this will extend coverage to over 46 million people. The main aims are saving lives and the NHS money, at the same time as promoting a positive image of motorcyclists.

LEBBS The Lincolnshire branch of Blood Bikes is LEBBS (Lincolnshire Emergency Blood Bikes). A recent addition to the Blood Bikes organisation, volunteeers have been working hard since January 2012, attending events and shows raising the funds to become a registered charity. With the help of local businesses they’ve now succeeded in raising enough money to obtain five motorcycles, a car, plus a PR show stand. They are currently in discussions with local NHS trusts to ensure that they understand the requirements for Lincolnshire and how to save the NHS as much money as they can. With operational bikes already purchased, rider induction training courses have commenced with check rides for riders being done by qualified IAM/ROSPA observers; other training covered blood box handling and hospital familiarisation trips to NHS facilities. Boston-Grantham will be known as ‘Route One’, with the option to collect and deliver blood products or medical equipment to and from Lincoln County Hospital. Once routes have been established, it’s envisaged that more county hospitals will jump at the chance of using the free service. Initially, LEBBS will cover weekends from 7pm on Friday and will be ‘on call’ until 6am Monday morning. They will be using twothree riders (one on nights, one on days and a backup rider). dOnATIOnS Large donations have given LEBBS the luxury of four operational bikes plus a Pan European as a backup, along with a Vauxhall Vectra car and a PR stand. LEEBS is a voluntary group, so if you would like to help in any way, visit www.lebbs.org or call John Sharratt on 01507 529401.

WHAT LICENCE DO I NEED? liGHT quadricycles:

Max power 4Kw (3bhp), max weight 350kg (without batteries), top speed 28mph. Licence category is AM (same as a moped). So you will need CBT, and after that you can drive one with L-plates for up to two years without taking the Theory and Practical tests. Renault isn’t offering the 45 in the UK right now, but it’s keeping an eye on developments.

26 www.twistngo.com

Heavy quadricycles: Max power 15kW (21bhp), max weight 400kg (without batteries) and no speed restriction! These are treated the same as a car, so licence category B, minimum age 17 and you’ll need to take the car Theory and Practical tests before driving one solo.

Renault Twizy Is it a scooter? Is it a car? No, it’s a quadricycle, and it’s a cross between the two (and electric to boot).

e live in interesting times. Until now, there were scooters and motorcycles on one side, cars on the other. But we’re heading for a less certain, more fluid future, where these distinctions could become meaningless. Electric bicycles have already blurred the boundaries between push bikes and mopeds; now the same is happening to the border between scooters and full-size cars – welcome to the quadricycle. The French have been making them for years, but newly standardised EU laws mean they’ve finally made it over here. Legally, there are two types of quadricycles – ‘light’ and ‘heavy’ (see box) – and either way they open up whole new possibilities for electric power. Electric cars are all very well, but they’re heavy and expensive, whereas lightweight quads (let’s call them that) are far more suited to battery power over short urban journeys. But the Renault Twizy, which was launched in France a year ago, is different. Other quadricycles try to pass themselves off as miniature cars, but the Twizy is clearly intended as a halfway house between a scooter and a full-size four-wheeler. That’s why it doesn’t have any doors, windows (both are optional), not to mention a heater, carpets or radio. Now the average cosseted car driver would probably run a mile at such barbarity, but bike riders won’t. So does the Twizy maker a decent commuter alternative to a 125?

W

DRIVING The Twizy I tested makes just 13kW (17bhp), which starts to look a bit feeble when you think that it weighs nearly half a tonne. This sounds like a recipe for escargot-like performance, but the good news is that it doesn’t work like that in practice. Getting into the Twizy is unlike anything else. Hinge up the gullwing half-doors (£595 extra, but I can’t see many UK drivers doing without them), hop in and slip on the seat belt – no helmet of course. Turn the key one click and the dash lights up – there’s a digital speedo, clock and a graphic battery level indicator. Turn the key again against a spring (like a conventional car) and it goes beep, which means it’s ready to go. Press the D or R button (forward or reverse) and release the handbrake by pressing quite hard on the brake pedal, and you’re off.

Given a gentle foot on the throttle, the Twizy will creep away, dead slow, but put your foot down and it takes off quite briskly. Renault claims 0-28mph in 6.1 seconds, and it feels about the same as an average 125, with plenty of acceleration around town, and not embarrassed coming out of 30 and 40 limits. In fact, it keeps accelerating at the same rate up to 50mph (top speed). On paper it’s fast because you’re so close to the ground and (unless you’ve paid for side windows) the wind whips past your helmetless head. It’s great fun, because the Twizy has quick, precise steering and stiff suspension, so it reminds you of a go-kart or an old Mini (the original one – half the size, twice the fun of BMW’s version), backed up by a turning circle of just six metres. The brakes too work well, and put a little power back into the battery, though not enough to turn this into a perpetual motion machine.

SQUEEZING IN So far so good. The downside is that the stiff suspension gives a bumpy ride and you soon get adept at steering around potholes and speed cushions. Without a heater the Twizy gets chilly and wet, especially in winter. I wore most of the same gear I would on a bike plus a woolly hat, but in warm weather (if we ever see it) you can drive in normal clothes.

Rare moment of sunshine in the Wye Valley

This little 125cc got to Scotland and back without complaining

The bike: Lexmoto Street 125

The Lexmoto Street is absolutely typical of the breed of naked 125. Air-cooled overhead cam four-stroke single mustering 10bhp and driving through a fivespeed gearbox. Carburettor, drum rear brake... this is motorcycling at its most basic. There is room for a pillion, but even solo the performance is limited, to say the least. An indicated 50-55mph doesn’t strain anything and it’s possible to see 65mph on the speedo, given a following wind, but little bikes like this are best kept off motorways. Reasonable handling on the Duro tyres, the front brake is a

36 www.twistngo.com

bit wooden and the rear drum decidedly weak, but it all does the job and the Street does look less garish and cheap than some Chinese 125s. Nor is it some dodgy Far East import sold over eBay. Importer Llexeter Ltd has been around for several years now, has a decent spread of dealers

and offers 12 months warranty plus full spares backup. How was the bike after its 1200-mile marathon? A bit grubbier with a flappy chain (which quick adjustment cured), the ignition switch was getting sticky and the right-hand mirror a little floppy, but apart from that all was well.

Intercity 125 1200 miles in three days on a Chinese 125... or Bristol to Glasgow on a tenner.

-ere’s an amazing fact with which to astound all your non-motorcycling friends. Ask them to name the most economical vehicle currently on sale in the UK and most will come back with a hybrid or two, a small diesel hatchback, or a Smart car. If pressed to include two wheels, they might acknowledge Piaggio’s MP3 Hybrid (if they know it exists) or ‘one of those little scooters,’ or a moped. Anyway, the message is that to save fuel you have to go a high tech route. Well you don’t, because the most economical means of transport short of a bicycle is a four-stroke 125cc motorcycle. No hybrid drive, no fuel injection and (ignition apart) no electronics, yet it sips fuel slower than anything else. Yes, the Honda CG125 has a lot to answer for. The big H made millions of them. You’d think no one seeking ‘go-to-work’ transport would choose a naked bike over an auto, but they do. The ancient CG outsold plenty of 125 scooters and though it’s since been eclipsed by younger bikes, the 125 naked class is still pretty strong. Who’s buying them? Returnee middle-aged commuters who want a ‘proper motorbike’, teenagers who don’t get along with scooters? Who cares? The point is that most of these 125 geared bikes will return more than 100mpg with careful riding and with decent-sized tanks they’ll also go a long way between refills – Honda claims 370 miles for its current CBF125. That’s twice as far as most proper touring bikes and more than a petrol Ford Focus. The best way to demonstrate this fact would be to ride one a long way. So that’s why I was sitting on a 125 in Bristol at 7am one dark morning. The aim – to get to Glasgow on a single tank. The bike was a Lexmoto Street 125, a Chinese copy of Suzuki’s GS125, chosen because the importer isn’t far from me. I’m sure other geared 125s would have done just as well. The tank supposedly holds 13 litres (just under three gallons) and I knew from experience that the Street would give just over 120mpg with mixed riding. Say a range of 340 miles. It’s 363 from Bristol to Glasgow (according to my Collins road atlas), so with some gentle riding we might just do it, especially if I cheat by filling up at Severn Bridge Services (14 miles north of Bristol) and call it River Severn to River Clyde.

H

less than 200 miles on the clock when I picked it up. Maybe it’ll loosen up. The Street is small enough to make filtering through traffic a doddle, but you need your wits about you at the front of the queue. Why? Because on an auto scooter, you just whack the throttle open and zip safely away. A geared 125 is more complicated – first gear feels low enough to climb the side of a house, so by 15mph it’s given its all and you have to change up, which happens again at 25-ish, putting another dent in your acceleration. By this time the cars you’ve just overtaken are snapping at your heels,

Above: Pastoral scene in Monmouthshire

Wet start It’s drizzling as I set off, just as the rush hour gets into its stride. I’d already had a cold ride up from Exeter the previous night, which reminded me that 125s aren’t the best choice to get somewhere quickly. The bike managed a mere 109mpg, but then it did have

However, it doesn’t really matter which version you look at, the Burgman has always been accepted as a benchmark class leader and has been credited by many as being the original modern day maxi scooter. The fact that it’s still around and going strong stands as a testament to its build REQUIREMENTS quality and the following it has with many dedicated clubs and forums means that if you need advice, you don’t have to look too far.
