asildon will be in the news a lot this year celebrating the golden jubilee of the plant’s launch back in 1964. In March, New Holland celebrated in style by reuniting over 70 veteran workers who clocked in on the flagship factory’s opening day 50 years ago. Its success can be measured by some of the statistics from the company; since 1964 more than 1.8 million British-made machines have rolled off the now twokilometre production line; the site employs 1000 people, makes 23,000 tractors each year and uses 600 tonnes of material every day. I think New Holland managing director Andrew Watson summed it up for me when he said: “e reunion is important because the people who set
up the plant in 1964 are actually part of the heritage of the New Holland brand and culture of the factory.” Back then the first models produced were the Ford 3000, 4000 and 5000 series; machines which are a key part of the tractor heritage scene, but are now replaced on the production line by the powerful T6 and T7 ranges. And it’s sometimes a sobering thought that today’s innovation will at some point become tomorrow’s heritage. Watching a new AGCO Challenger machine at work the other day, it was clear that its power, productivity and reliability were unquestionable. Another key selling point for this new breed of tractor is its ‘Mobil-trac’ design, a major feature to reduce field compaction. I can’t help feeling that things have turned full circle when I think of the old Caterpillar, International and other crawlers which were developed all those years ago for much the same reason.

Massey Ferguson’s industrious brother
Russell Watts has been blessed to own and completely restore this 1978 Massey Ferguson 20 Industrial which was once the property of the Carmelite friars at Aylesford Priory. Words Alan Barnes Pictures Alan Barnes & Russell Watts
I
n the excellent line-up of classic tractors at last year’s Wrotham Classic Steam and Transport Rally in Kent it was hard to miss the bright yellow Massey Ferguson 20 Industrial which stood among the other red, blue and grey painted machines. is excellent MF 20 is owned by local man Russell Watts, and following a complete ground up restoration Russell’s tractor had made its debut at a previous Wrotham show. With the Massey still in exceptionally fine condition it seems very hard to believe that the restoration work was completed some eight years ago. Taking advantage of a fine aernoon and with the kind permission of the event organiser the tractor was moved to a quieter area of the rally field for a few ‘snaps’ and away from the hurly burly, Russell told me how he came to own the tractor.
Previous owners
“News of the Massey came via my father, John, who used to work at the London Golf Club where one of the fitters told him about the tractor which at the time was apparently owned by the Carmelite friars at Aylesford Priory near Maidstone. “ey had bought the MF 20 in September 1986 and were the second owners; and it is thought that the tractor, serial number 809871, was originally bought new by the Maidstone council when it was registered as AKE 736T. “I arranged a visit to inspect the tractor and to give it the once over. It was in reasonable condition although the engine had seized so I couldn’t hear it running. e Duncan cab was still in place and looked to be in reasonably good order apart from the roof which seemed to have been repaired with a wooden panel at some time. ➤
FarmingHeritage Rootes little Imp
The John Deere 4020 supplied just over 100hp and was offered with optional full powershift transmission.
In the world of motor cars there was a bit of a t’do about one of the new models. It appeared at long last in May ’63 amid a torrent of publicity and fanfare. The Duke of Edinburgh, no less, had opened the factory at Linwood, Renfrewshire. Much was expected of this new small motor. The Hillman Imp (PIC MM) hit the dealer forecourts, hailed as a rival to the BMC Mini. It never lived up to that for sure. The Rootes Group had pinned much on this venture and as it turned out this little car, along with Linwood, did more to bring down the empire than any other single reason. With its advanced aluminium engine installed in the ‘boot’ it gave the impression that the designers had tried just a bit too hard to create a motoring revolution along the lines of the Mini. These little motors are quite rare today, especially the ‘upmarket’ Singer Chamois and
The Hillman Imp arrived in a fanfare but did nothing to prevent the demise of the Rootes Group. the ultra-rare Commer Imp van versions. Oh yes, I nearly forgot, they didn’t corner like a Mini either, as HR discovered for himself! There wasn’t much you couldn’t do in a Mini!
e original six ton an hour conveyers were quickly rendered too slow and had to be upgraded to ones with a much bigger capacity. It was also noted at the time that when these 25 ton drying bins were installed the value of a full bin of grain would pay for a brand new Fordson Super Major. Today, the number of ‘bins’ has to be multiplied many times, but then we do get a lot more tractor for a lot more money.
The Home Farm fleet
Talking of more capacity, HR’s thoughts turned to tractors. Home Farm’s front line tractor in ’63 was a three-year-old Track Marshall. It might have been a 50, but HR remembers it had a Perkins L4 engine which was not the best of starters on a cold morning. Anyway it was backed up by Fordson County crawlers and various Fordson Majors. All the land work was done with crawlers, the Track-Marshall doing the ploughing, with the Counties working down, drilling and rolling. e horsepower race had not quite hit Home Farm yet, but it soon would. e Track-Marshall was not quick enough, so what to replace it with was the big question. Models to be considered at the time were the offerings from the Ford converters such as Doe, County and Roadless. In the tracked line-up there were six-cylinder TrackMarshalls, along with four-cylinder Fiats, Internationals and Caterpillars – all good tractors with features to recommend them. HR was always a ‘track’ man and the Track-Marshall 70 almost won the day. However, it just so happened that the local contractor decided at this time to retire and his Fowler Challenger 22 came on the market. HR bought it without much hesitation, kept the Marshall, and spent less money than if it had been traded in for a new Track Marshall 70. Job done. However, there was one tractor that was new out in ’63 and although on ‘pump ups’,

The John Deere standard 4020; in HR’s view one of the six tractors that are design milestones in the tractor world. what do you think?

tyres that is, HR had taken considerable interest it, going to several demonstrations in the district. is tractor has since become to be regarded as a classic, if not the classic, and one of the six tractors that are design milestones in the tractor world. It was of course the John Deere 4020.
e Beatles got to number one for the first time on the 2nd of the month with their tune From Me To You. On the 11th their album, Please, Please Me, went to the top of the album chart. HR wasn’t a Beatles fan, then or now. One number that stuck in the mind was Wipeout by e Surfaris. With a very odd beginning, it had some pretty good instrumentals when it got going and was on its way to become an international hit. And lastly, rabbit pie was ‘off’ again in ’63, not that it had been ‘on’ since the first outbreak some years before. Myxomatosis had reappeared in the rabbit population and that was the end of rabbit pies forever, they just lost their appeal somehow. I think ‘myxy’ started in France; maybe it was a blessing in disguise. Although a cruel death for the rabbit they had become a serious problem to the farmer. What with De Gaulle and his ‘NON’, and myxy, HR thought ‘Viva La France’!! Well, something like that anyway. Till next time HR. ✦
Very tempting
At just over 100hp and offered with optional full powershi transmission. It was, if you like, the first ‘modern’ wheel tractor. HR was very tempted, but tracks won the day in the end. e other tractors in that list, by the way, are the Ivel, the first lightweight ‘Agricultural Motor’, the Fordson Model F, the first with unit construction (although the Wallis people will argue that one until they go blue in the face), the first International Farmall, the grey Fergie, the 4020 and the original Caterpillar Challenger 65. Although not on wheels the 65 is responsible for the rubber track idea. You could even call it a revolution.

Good turn round for steering wheels Steering Wheel Restorations has been restoring steering wheels for over 20 years. The Kent based company offers a fast, reliable, competitive service normally processing steering wheels in seven to 14 days. The example shown here is of David Brown 50D (Cropmaster/Taskmaster) steering wheels before and after restoration. The whole process took one week and involved removing all the original plastic, straightening the frame and preparing it to go into a mould with new plastic. Once out of the mould, a hard polyester finishing coat was applied which was then honed to give a period sheen. The company has numerous moulds that relate to David Brown tractors along with moulds for Internationals, Ferguson and Fordson etc. The moulds allow new rims to be recast in old frames, and also complete new wheels to be made if necessary.
Some steering wheels do not require a complete restoration, but can simply be recoated, restoring the original hard glazed finish; this can be done in black or other colours including marble effect. Sometimes work is needed because the plastic rim has completely decayed and cracked making it uncomfortable to use; sometimes becoming slippery with the original Bakelite solvents leaching out over hands and clothes. Or simply the vehicle feels unsafe due to the condition of the wheel, as it may be broken structurally. Whatever the cause, Steering Wheel Restorations has over 400 moulds for all sorts of vehicles going back to 1910, including cars, boats, aeroplanes, commercial vehicles, buses, coaches – and even Bren gun carriers. For further information visit www.steeringwheelrestoration.co.uk and www.steeringwheelrestoration.com

The plastic rim has completely decayed and cracked and needs replacement.
Turn up the temperature on seized components Attempting to wrestle with seized or corroded nuts or similar components can be a time consuming affair, and removing with force can damage the nut or component, so many will reach for the gas torch. However, in these health and safety conscious days, there are many concerns with using a naked flame in a confined space. Flameless heat is the way forward and offers safer, more efficient and reliable component heating. Now Laser Tools has introduced a new inductive heating solution, designed for the

TractorMay2014
workshop. The 5834 kit is supplied with 19mm and 22mm coils for nuts and bolts and where heat has to be concentrated in a specific area, plus a universal rope coil which has many applications. The heat inductor tool also has many body and trim applications and is particularly useful for badge, vinyl sticker and appliqué removal – the heat is induced in the metal panelwork behind the badge or sticker, softening the adhesive that secures it. In these cases a body pad is used (included in separate kit 5840). An additional coil kit is available (part number 5841) which includes eight preformed coils in sizes from 15mm to 45mm. The coils are flexible and easily adjusted or contoured to fit difficult to access components. RRP for the hand-held heat inductor (5834) is £595, the pad kit (5840) is £114 and the additional coil kit (5841) is £182.80 (all prices + VAT). For further information www.lasertools.co.uk
Steering Wheel Restorations can offer a seven to 14 day turn round on work like this with moulds available to suit many vehicles.
