AGGREGATE FOR CONCRETE SOLUTIONS

I

n its simplest form, concrete is a mixture of paste and aggregates, or rocks. The paste, composed of cement and water, coats the surface of the fine (small) and coarse (larger) aggregates. Through a chemical reaction called hydration, the paste hardens and gains strength to form the rock-like mass known as concrete. Aggregates, which are the main components that make concrete, are inert granular materials such as sand, gravel, or crushed stone that, along with water and cement, are an essential ingredient in concrete. For a good concrete mix, aggregates need to be clean, hard, strong particles free of absorbed chemicals or coatings of clay and other fine materials that could cause the deterioration of concrete. Aggregates, which account for 60 to 75 percent of the total volume of concrete, are divided into two distinct categories i.e. fine and coarse. Fine aggregates generally consist of natural sand or crushed stone with most particles passing through a 3/8-inch sieve. Coarse aggregates are any particles greater than 0.19 inch, but generally range between 3/8 and 1.5 inches in diameter. Gravels constitute the majority of coarse aggregate used in concrete with crushed stone making up most of the remainder. Natural gravel and sand are usually dug or dredged from a pit, river, lake, or seabed. Crushed aggregate is produced by crushing quarry rock, boulders, cobbles, or large-size gravel. Recycled concrete is a viable source of aggregate and has been satisfactorily used in granular sub-bases, soil-cement, and in new concrete. After harvesting, aggregate is processed, crushed, screened, and washed to obtain proper

10

cleanliness and gradation. If necessary, a benefaction process such as jigging or heavy media separation can be used to upgrade the quality. Once processed, the aggregates are handled and stored to minimize segregation and degradation and prevent contamination. Aggregates strongly influence Concrete's freshly mixed and hardened properties, mixture proportions, and economy. Consequently, selection of aggregates is an important process. Although some variation in aggregate properties is expected, characteristics that are considered include: Ÿ grading Ÿ durability Ÿ particle shape and surface texture Ÿ abrasion and skid resistance Ÿ unit weights and voids Ÿ absorption and surface moisture Grading refers to the determination of the particle-size distribution for aggregate. Grading limits and maximum aggregate size are specified because these properties affect the amount of aggregate used as well as cement and water requirements, workability, pumpability, and durability of concrete. In general, if the water-cement ratio is chosen correctly, a wide range in grading can be used without a major effect on strength. When gap-graded aggregate are specified, certain particle sizes of aggregate are omitted from the size continuum. Gap-graded aggregate are used to obtain uniform textures in exposed aggregate concrete. Close control of mix proportions is necessary to avoid segregation. Particle shape and surface texture influence the properties of freshly mixed concrete more than the properties of hardened concrete. Rough-textured, angular, and elongated particles require more water to produce workable

concrete than smooth, rounded compact aggregate. Consequently, the cement content must also be increased to maintain the water-cement ratio. Generally, flat and elongated particles are avoided or are limited to about 15 percent by weight of the total aggregate. Unit-weight measures the volume that graded aggregate and the voids between them will occupy in concrete. The void content between particles affects the amount of cement paste required for the mix. Angular aggregates increase the void content. Larger sizes of well-graded aggregate and improved grading decrease the void content. Absorption and surface moisture of aggregate are measured when selecting aggregate because the internal structure of aggregate is made up of solid material and voids that may or may not contain water. The amount of water in the concrete mixture must be adjusted to include the moisture conditions of the aggregate. Abrasion and skid resistance of an aggregate are essential when the aggregate is to be used in concrete constantly subject to abrasion as in heavy-duty floors or pavements. Different minerals in the aggregate wear and polish at different rates. Harder aggregate can be selected in highly abrasive conditions to minimize wear. A properly designed mixture possesses the desired workability for the fresh concrete and the required durability and strength for the hardened concrete. Typically, a mix is about 10 to 15 percent cement, 60 to 75 percent aggregate and 15 to 20 percent water is required. Entrained air in many concrete mixes may also take up another 5 to 8 percent.

ew to Legrand's range of service sector solutions for industrial environments, is an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) system, which enhances products - from structured cabling systems for data networks, to control and management of the installation, including trunking and distribution systems. “Legrand's environmentally approach to constantly changing global markets, encompasses ongoing technological developments of the company's extensive product portfolio. “Energy

efficiency, quality power supply, optimum safety and enhanced aesthetics are critical in the advancement of all Legrand systems,” states Luk Ivens, general manager, Legrand SA, global specialists in electrical and data building infrastructures. “The Legrand UPS system, which ensures continuity of service for installations in diverse industries, provides reliable performance in terms of power and back up time. “Optimum sizing of power stages, the latest electronic components and thorough testing of each unit, ensure dependability and safety of the new Legrand UPS system. High performance batteries and an efficient charging system have extended battery life by up to 50%.” The compact and lightweight Modular series is suitable for industrial and commercial applications, ensuring a reliable power supply up to 120 kVA. This flexible system, which is easy to transport, install and maintain, is made up of standard modules that be added to existing configurations, to increase the power supply or backup time. When necessary, power is easily expanded inside the cabinet, without having to reconfigure the installation or UPS. The backup time can be extended either by adding battery trays in the same cabinet, or by adding another cabinet, depending on the power of the UPS and the backup time required. This modular three phase system consists of individual single phase modules which are redundant and selfconfiguring, to enable power to be increased quickly and safely. Different levels of redundancy are easily obtained to ensure maximum continuity of service at all times. legrand-ups-solutions-continuity-ofservice…two An advantage of a three phase power supply system with single phase loads, is that in the event of a failure of one of the modules, there is no loss of power. Power continues to be distributed over the other modules which are still operational. With this system, it is also

18

possible to create redundancy on each individual phase. If one power modules fails, the other modules for this phase take over. In a failure of a UPS that includes several control modules, continuity of service is assured by the automatic distribution of lost power over the other modules. A range of communications accessories has been designed for managing and configuring the UPS, as well as for remote control of the system. These devices include network interfaces for real time control of the UPS and for managing numerous events that include no power, over-loads and by-pass problems. These network interfaces, with a 32-bit processor, do not require any external software. Other accessories include sensors for monitoring ambient temperature and humidity, smoke detectors and fire safety controls, as well as air conditioning fault and intrusion detectors. Communication and supervision software for accessing the operating parameters of the UPS and for carrying out full diagnostics and the configuration of specific functions, is also available. This UPS system also encompasses the Conventional series for a reliable power supply up to 10 kVA and the Line Interactive series, which is a UPS system up to 3 kVA. Jozini Mall unveils assorted opportunities to the community

J

ozini Mall, the first major one-stop retail centre which will be open next month seeks to forge various prospects for the area as it will be the largest and only formal retail centre in Jozini. Greater Atlantic Properties is the owner and developer of the R140-million mall which will be leased by specialist retail leasing and development company Retail Network Services. According to the developers, the mall will help correct a large undersupply of retail in this community. Residents have been severely restricted in meeting their daily shopping needs within their own town. Located close to the existing Jozini CBD on the main arterial road from the residential area to the CBD, providing great visibility and access to passing traffic and the general population. Jozini Shopping Centre is set to become the dominate retail node and key shopping

destination. Its location and visibility contribute strongly in the sense that it is on the main road to the Jozini CBD three kilometers from the town centre next to a housing development in one of the most densely populated areas of the region. Residents wishing to shop in the CBD literally face an uphill battle many of them having to walk up the long, steep incline until they reach the town, at the top of a hill. And, on, when they get to town, there is very little choice with the limited national retail offering in Jozini CBD. This will change with the new Jozini Mall that will provide the community with a relevant mix of retailers including hardware, fashion, furniture and fast food. The 17 000m² mall will comprise 45 shops – anchored by a 3 000m² Shoprite

and including a mix of convenience, furniture and fast food outlets - all supported by over 400 parking bays, 36 taxi bays and eight bus bays. It also brings to town leading fashion retailers including Truworths, Identity, Jet, Edgars Active, Pep, Power Fashion and Rage. National furniture retailers at the mall will include Joshua Doore, Ellerines, OK Furniture, Lewis and Barnetts. 'The eager demand from retailers to take up shops in Jozini Mall reflects the consumer potential in the community and both Standard Bank and Capitec have seized the opportunity to expand their business and have committed to the mall. The mall will benefit a market of over 42 000 households in its primary and secondary catchment area. Nearly 106 000 people live in the primary catchment area and around 135,000 people stay in the secondary market zone. Retail Network Services which is leasing Jozini Mall is a full-service specialist retail leasing and development company. Retail Network Services has an excellence record of successes to its name, including Pan Africa Shopping Centre in Alexandra, Hemingways Mall in East London, Tsakane Mall in Springs, Jabulani Mall and Protea Glen Shopping Centre in Soweto to its name. Jozini is a small town on the main route to Mozambique. It is synonymous with Lake Jozini formerly the Pongolapoort Dam. This small business centre provides a gateway into Maputaland.

Participants will be able to engage with the developer as well as the tenants, Allan Gray, and to follow the journey to achieving a 6 Star Green Star SA rating. The experience will be completed by a fascinating walking tour of this iconic project.

monitors energy and water use, a lighting system that will ensure that lighting is only used when required and a green roof that contributes to thermal roof insulation and storm water retention. The project is situated next to the Grain Silo building, which is Heritage protected,” explains Manfred Braune, Technical Executive for the GBCSA. Place of sweet waters – planning Cape Town's water future The Reclaim Camissa walking tour is an inspiring walk through the 'place of sweet waters'- an ancient Khoi name for Cape Town. Tour participants will meander along Cape Town's original waterways, taking in some of the history and cultural stories associated with Cape Town's water system and debating the possibilities of finding a more sustainable water future in Cape Town. Experience Cape Town sustainability efforts The Cape Town Sustainable City Tour is a customised excursion, which makes its way around Cape Town via various means of public transport (be prepared to hop on a bicycle). The tour will visit various sustainable initiatives that the City of Cape Town is currently rolling out; taking in the Oranjezicht City Farm, Green Point Urban Park and the Company Gardens. Led by the City of Cape Town's leading urban planners and sustainability practitioners, this tour will showcase the efforts being made to lead Cape Town towards a sustainable future. “All of these unique new offerings which allow people to get an in-depth insight into green buildings and sustainable initiatives within Cape Town are open to the public. Anyone

interested can attend at an affordable cost of R250 per tour,” explains Wilkinson. Education remains a core focus for the GBCSA As part of this year's event the GBCSA will also be offering several educational courses in Cape Town and the Pavilion Conference Centre at the V&A Waterfront. The Economics of Green Building is a new half-day course, which provides an understanding of the economic forces in the property market, the status quo of green building economics in South Africa and the business case for green building. The Green Star SA Accredited Professional Course is the GBCSA's signature course and core offering that introduces the Green Star SA rating tools and is the first requirement for obtaining status as a Green Star SA Accredited Professional. With the anticipated release of the new Green Star SA – Existing Building Performance PILOT tool at the Convention, the Greening Existing Buildings Course is fast becoming very popular. This course equips individuals with greening techniques for enhancing the performance of existing buildings by showcasing relevant case studies. Sponsored by Nedbank Corporate Property Finance - leaders in green building finance - and one of the highlights on the South African property and sustainability calendar – this anticipated event has been revitalised with the thought-provoking theme 'ReWire' – Connecting Minds. Building Value.

“The building comprises many sustainable features, some of which are: a sea water cooling system, water efficient fittings & fixtures, a high performance façade that controls the thermal performance and comfort inside the building, an ICT system that 22

Stefanutti scoops top honours in KZN MBA Excellence in Construction awards At the annual Master Builders KwaZulu-Natal Excellence in Construction awards held at the Sibaya Casino in August, Stefanutti Stocks Building KZN scooped the award for Supreme Winner 2013 for the Ellerines Warehouse and WBHO came out tops in the Recreational, Leisure and Hotels category – above R40 million – for the Wild Coast Sun refurbishment and extensions.

T

he prestigious gala dinner event played host to 330 guests, including the competition entrants, industry stakeholders, government representatives and members of the media. Master Builders KwaZulu-Natal Excellence in Construction awards, initiated in 2004, enable KwaZulu-Natal construction companies to showcase their work, to celebrate their achievements and to gain recognition for the buildings they have created that enrich the lives of others. The programme remains unique in that the team of adjudicators is made up of four industry veterans who collectively have a wealth of experience to draw on. Each project entered is evaluated on construction methodology used, as well as the quality of the end product.

towards building excellence. He further stated that in its quest to take builders on a journey of excellence, the Association has initiated an Emerging Contractor Programme which they are confident will produce Excellence Awards winners in the years to come.

would fund the project.

Minister Connie September, Minister of Human Settlements, delivered an address at the event in which she stated that building a better country is central to the vision of the Department of Human Settlements, which aims to establish viable areas constituted by socially and economically integrated communities with access to opportunities and facilities such as clinics, schools and other amenities.

We congratulate Excellence Awards recipients in all categories. Vikashnee Harbhajan, executive director of Master Builders Association KwaZulu-Natal, reiterated that the Association prides itself on recognising excellence in the industry and remains committed to mobilising its members into a mode of building excellence, thereby contributing significant value to the industry.

The Minister informed delegates that as Government, they are always keen to forge strong relations with people and entities that strive for excellence and quality in the housing sector.

Andrew Stewart received the Award of Merit for his positive contribution to the industry. The annual award for Women in Construction went to Bronwyn Lee from Stefanutti Stocks Building KZN and the Supplier of the Year was awarded to RMD Kwikform.

She also called on the industry to help Government deal with the challenges holistically, which among other things include the problem of lack of proper sanitation in most communities. The Minister drew attention to the plight of the elderly in South Africa who do not have homes and are living out their twilight years in an undignified manner. She made special mention of a woman of 109 years old who throughout her life has never had a house of her own and called on the Industry to assist.

Among other dignitaries who attended were Advocate Brenda Madumise, chairperson of Business Unity South Africa and chairperson of NHBRC as well as Speaker for Ethekwini Municipality, Logie Naidoo.

The full list of winners last year there were 34 entries from 17 companies, with projects ranging over a widely spread area. It was observed that despite the apparent lack of skilled artisans, work of an exceptionally high standard continues to be produced. The drivers of these projects were committed to delivering outstanding work and their passion for excellence is portrayed in the end products.

To rapturous applause, Sean Lambert of Massmart Holdings Limited, a member of Master Builders KwaZulu-Natal, heeded the call of the Minister and announced that they

Categories range from projects valued at under R1 million to projects exceeding R40 million. Project The Staff Residence at Rob Ferreira Hospital was awarded to Consultium Architects after the successful completion of a master plan done for the entire complex in 2009. This building will be a true landmark in the Nelspruit CBD, as it will stand a proud 13 stories and will be the highest building ever constructed in this region. The building consists of 147 accommodation units for Doctors and supporting staff with two levels of basement parking. Ground floor is allocated to meeting facilities, a coffee shop and open space for social activities, towered by two large multi volume atriums creating vibrant atmospheres. This building was designed to have a modern appearance within the approved budget and at the same time serve as a counterpart and link between the existing residence and the new resource centre, both constructed concurrently.

28

The building being the highest ever constructed in the Nelspruit CBD, had various town planning challenges that needed to be overcome. The professional team worked closely with local town planners, fire and traffic engineers. Due to the concentrated housing of people, the design had to incorporate the upgrade of the existing entrance, additional parking bays required meant that the entire hospital’s site development needed to be reconsidered. Building works started in January 2012 and the project was scheduled for 21 months, no serious changes were made on the project after it was handed over to the main contractor. A few design changes were implemented during construction, but this is common on any project, and more so on a project of this scale and value.

This is one of the bigger projects in scale and value that Consultium Architects has undertaken in the past couple of years. What makes this project unique is the fact that we can record that we have successfully designed and administered one of the highest structures built in Nelspruit to date. Gillespie Architects - Romead Business Park Romead Business Park is situated in the industrial area of Pinetown and constitutes ten sites, developed by Rodney van der Walt, CEO of GCP Projects SA. As the 'new kid on the block' the growth and success of this business park has been closely observed by the property sector, especially since it has managed to flourish in a time of economic downturn.

G

illespie Archtiects has been involved with the development of the Romead Business Park since its infancy. The building guidelines were written by the firm, and all except two of the buildings were designed and detailed by Gillespie Architects. Surrounded on three sides by nature reserves, the focus of Romead was to ensure that a high standard of design was achieved in the architecture of the park. A unified and yet dynamic environment was sought with an emphasis on sensitivity to the environment, aesthetics and the individual. The first structure to be built at Romead was the gatehouse, the design of which is intended to be iconic, to push the boundaries of both materials and construction techniques. It echoes contemporary international trends that defy gravity and historically traditional forms. It has been said that concrete is liquid stone and the two main walls of the gatehouse structure bear this out.

30

In addition two symbolic, leaf shaped steel canopies, suspended by thin steel cables from the organically shaped supports, provide protection from the elements and reinforce the link to the natural surroundings. The new headquarters for Metier was also designed by Gillespie Architects for Romead. With Metier being a concrete supply company, concrete products and finishes were to feature prominently and a tough, industrial aesthetic applied to the design. On either side of a central core, angular concrete structures dominate the front faรงade in a display of off-shutter concrete. These are expressed as strong, sculptural features with walls that are rectilinear in neither plan nor section. On the outer edges of the building the office components are designed, contrastingly, as face brick rectangular spaces with mono-pitch roofs falling towards the centre. Double volume circulation spaces divide the solid elements of office component and service cores both physically and visually. The staircases in these zones are another expression of the pure

beauty of raw concrete. Situated centrally within the Romead Business Park is Geda 6, a 5500m2 warehouse and office building developed for investment purposes. The imposing bulk of the warehouse component is softened by the elegant, sweeping lines of the roof and the side cladding, which leans gently outward above a stackbonded face brick plinth. The office building is simply designed, with the focus on a central off-shutter concrete panel, which floats free of the surrounding walls. By contrast, the new regional headquarters for Uti Mounties is an exercise in tough lines and pragmatic expression. Face brick panels modulate the external facades and mono-pitch roofs reinforce the angular lines generated on plan. The office building has a double volume glass entrance, which creates a negative space to juxtapose the flanking panels of brickwork, which are punctured minimally by fenestration.

by Gillespie Architects for Romead Business Park, DeLaval, provides a whimsical, counterbalance to some of the more rectilinear design approaches of the other structures in the park. The main warehouse component is roofed with a combination of curved and straight lines separated by a south facing roof light. The office component was required by the shape of the site to be a long, narrow structure, attached to the main warehouse and orientated west. The requirements to design for sun 窶田ontrol as well as the aesthetic necessity to modulate the lengthy facade led to some playful, capricious forms and quirky features. The building positioned on Platform 1, an investment warehouse and office structure, is the first to greet the visitor on

entering the Romead Business Park. As such the challenge of designing a building that met the functional requirements as well as the imperative to create a feature worthy of its position was great. Three angled, buttressed walls create an immediate sculptural feature of the office component, whilst the floating concrete roof slab creates an impression of weightlessness. The warehouse component echoes this angular, edgy approach. The brief to Gillespie Architects was to design a park that would surpass other developments of this nature. The buildings, their individual design and the manner in which they 'speak' to each other all works to fulfill the essence of this brief.
