events.mosman.nsw.gov.au Council has launched a new website to promote Mosman's unique identity and lifestyle, and to encourage participation in local initiatives. The Mosman Events website is the 'go to' destination for what's on in Mosman. It contains a comprehensive listing of events with broad appeal for people from the local community as well as visitors to the area. It features cultural, health and wellness, and sporting events, exhibitions, talks and workshops and children's events and activities. Community organisations and local businesses are welcome to add their

events to the site, which also features a detailed listing of events organised by Mosman Council. In addition to the new website, Mosman Events is available by email. Visit the site and sign-up for weekly and monthly newsletters. These will be delivered direct to your inbox, alerting you to upcoming events.

Investing in infrastructure

Council has signed a $750k contract for the renewal of the Balmoral Sea Wall. Metrocorp, a large civil contractor has been engaged for the work and recently completed the renewal of the sea wall in Rose Bay, Woollahra. Work required on the 1929 wall was identiﬁed following a condition audit in 2011. Manager Assets and Services Craig Covich has said, “The last major works on the wall occurred a decade ago and the wall is showing its age”. Works will commence in late July for completion by the busy summer period. This continues Council’s investment in infrastructure, which since 2009 has seen over $2 million spent at Balmoral alone including the renewal of the public amenity blocks, Balmoral Oval improvements, bushland rehabilitation, the restoration of the heritage-listed rotunda and renewal of piles at Balmoral Baths. The next 12 months will also see further planned investment in infrastructure in Mosman at the following locations:  Clem Morath Pool  Clifton Gardens Jetty Baths $200K  Renewal works on creeks, pipelines and pits funded

Mosman Art Prize

A submission outlining the main issues of concern to Mosman has been sent to the NSW Department of Planning and Infrastructure.

On Friday 12 July at Mosman Art Gallery Rachel Ellis was awarded the 2013 Mosman Art Prize ($30,000) for her painting, Bathurst Landscape - William Street, 2012. Capturing the colours and topography of the NSW Central Tablelands and one of our most important regional cities, Rachel's landscape painting of Bathurst's William Street will now join the established Mosman Art Collection. Celebrating 66 years in 2013, Mosman Art Prize is a major acquisitive painting award sponsored by Mosman Council. A free exhibition of the 116 selected ﬁnalists is on show at Mosman Art Gallery from Saturday 13 July to Sunday 25 August 2013. This year's award was judged by respected artist Lucy Culliton (also a recipient of the Prize in 2000), who said, “This is a beautifully considered and well-constructed artwork with depth deﬁned by subtle tones and a colour palette that leads the eye through the painting … I feel this work will stand strong with those other stars within Mosman's acquisitive Art Collection.”

Viv May calls it a day Council's General Manager, Viv May, is retiring in September after working at Mosman Council for 43 years, including 27 years as General Manager. Viv May has had an extraordinary influence over Council Administration. Mosman was the first Council in NSW to expose all outdoor works to competitive tendering which reduced Council employed day labour from over 100 to a specialised Core Group of six, with substantial ongoing savings to Council. In the early 1990s Viv May was instrumental in the development of Council's first strategic management plan, MOSPLAN well before the State Government made this mandatory for all councils. Indeed MOSPLAN served as a model for other Councils around Australia. In recent years, Viv has overseen the development of the much loved facilities of the Mosman Art Gallery, the Mosman Swim Centre and the Drill Hall Complex including the Marie Bashir Mosman Sports Centre. Over the years, Viv has worked with 15 Mayors and 13 elected Councils. This is a remarkably long and distinguished level of public service dedicated to the people of Mosman. For this he was awarded the Public Service Medal in the 1999 Australia Day Honours list. Importantly Viv leaves behind a legacy of efficient and dedicated staff in whom we, the community, can have every confidence. Many senior Mosman officers, Max Glyde, John Carmichael. Royal Australian Navy International Fleet Review

3 to 11 October www.navy.gov.au/ifr The Harbour will be a 'sea of action' as the Royal Australian Navy celebrates 100 years since it ﬁrst entered Sydney Harbour. Over 40 naval vessels and 20 tall ships will create a kaleidoscope of colour, pomp and ceremony. This is a celebration not to be missed!

On 5 August the Mosman Rider will change its hours of operation and diﬀerentiate between winter and summer. The winter operating times will be from 9am–1pm and 2pm–4pm and will operate from May to September. Between October and April, the summer schedule will be in place providing an extra 2 hours of operation each day and extending the ﬁnishing time to 6pm. The route will remain the same. Updated timetables are in production and will be available on the Rider and at the Civic Centre from the end of July.

Generally it has been agreed that the priority uses of the Ovals will be: Over the past decade, demand for competitive sports field use has increased significantly putting considerable strain on the limited ovals available in Mosman. Coupled with training demands, this has led to over use and the inability to sustain playing surfaces at an acceptable condition. In 2012 Council commissioned an extensive report on the options available and this independent advice concluded that considering limited resources, a priority use model was the best way to address the issues identified. The current policy will be updated to reflect a priority use model for sporting codes. This will allow maintenance and improvements to be tailored to each facility for the priority sport identified in the Policy.

While sporting codes will have priority use they will not have exclusive use and this will ensure demands from other users such as schools continue to be accommodated. As part of the policy, Council will be encouraging clubs to make a ﬁnancial contribution to the upkeep and maintenance of the ovals and pavilions for the beneﬁt of all.
