Foreshore Restorations Continue
The Festival of Mosman is in full swing and will conclude on 20 October with an Open Day Coinciding this year with the Royal Australian Navy's International Fleet Review, the Festival was opened on Saturday 28 September with a spectacular twilight performance by the Navy's Rock and Pop Band at Balmoral. Mosman was the perfect place to enjoy the Review over the October long weekend, as tall ships and naval vessels from around the world commemorated the centenary of the Royal Australian Navy's first entry into Sydney Harbour.
Mosman also played host to a Freedom of Entry Parade by the sailors of HMAS Penguin, Australian Navy Cadets and the Royal Australian Navy Band. Other Festival highlights have included new art installations at Mosman Art Gallery and Middle Head, In Situ: Festival of Sculpture & Installation along Military Road, as well as walks, tours, exhibitions and shows across Mosman. Major works to repair and renew the seawall at Balmoral Beach are expected to continue until February 2014. Visitors will notice the hoarding on sections of the beach and also on the foreshore area opposite Hunter Park, where equipment is being stored over the life of the project. At a cost of approximately $800,000, around 750 metres of the sea wall is being progressively repaired and rejuvenated between the Bathers Pavilion and Balmoral Baths. The work also includes restoration of the stormwater culvert adjacent to Raglan Street. Every effort is being made to minimise impact on bathers and other users of the area while these essential works are underway. Further north along Balmoral Beach, renovation works on the Clem Morath Pool have been completed at a cost of $70,000. Major footpath, kerb and gutter and road renewal works are now also complete along the northern end of The Esplanade. At Clifton Gardens, the latest round of jetty renewal works has been completed, partly funded by a grant of $60,000 from the Better Boating Program.
Swimming pool registrations due soon Planning to make good use of your backyard pool this summer? Don't forget that recent changes to the law mean that all swimming pools and spas must now be registered on a State-wide Swimming Pool Register. Spit Junction Masterplan
W A Masterplan for the Spit Junction area is currently on exhibition until 3 December 2013. You can view the exhibited material at any of the following locations: § www.mosmanplanning.net § www.mosman.nsw.gov.au § Council's administration building - in the foyer § Mosman Library - in the reference section The Masterplan was prepared by a team of consultants and presents a number of strategies and recommendations to achieve renewal at Spit Junction. The Masterplan also proposes three options, based on the consultant's view, for a financially feasible redevelopment of Council's civic centre site, however there could be many others.
Council has not adopted the Masterplan, nor has it endorsed it. The Plan is on exhibition in order to obtain feedback on its recommendations and direction. Your comments will help inform the Council in making its decision about the future of Spit Junction. A month into the job, Mosman Council's new General Manager, Veronica Lee, is quickly becoming familiar with local issues. Veronica officially commenced duties on 16 September 2013, following the retirement of long-serving General Manager Viv May, who held the position for 27 years. Veronica has a Bachelor of Business from Sydney's University of Technology and has also completed an Executive Master of Public Administration at the University of Sydney. Since early 2011, Veronica has been Deputy General Manager – Corporate Governance and Community at Burwood Council. Prior to that, she was a Senior Project Manager in the Department of Premier and Cabinet, Director of Security and Recovery Coordination, also in the Department of Premier and Cabinet, and Deputy Chief Executive of Emergency Management NSW. Adjusting to her new role north of the harbour, Veronica says she has been encouraged by the warm welcome provided by members of the community, Councillors and Council staff. ‘I couldn't have wished for a better start’ she said, ‘I don't doubt there will be plenty of challenges ahead, however I think Council is well-placed to meet them headon, and to continue delivering high quality services for the Mosman community.’ Veronica has been engaged under a five-year contract.

mosman.nsw.gov.au In November 2012 Council resolved to ask the Geographical Names Board (GNB) to run a public consultation process on the creation of the suburbs of Balmoral Beach, Clifton Gardens and Beauty Point. Council then resolved to add a further suburb of Mosman Bay in May this year. The remaining area will retain the suburb name of Mosman. The GNB has now advised that approval has been given to advertise the proposal to create new address localities named Balmoral Beach, Beauty Point, Clifton Gardens and Mosman Bay. These proposed localities are shown on the map below, which will be on display at the Civic Centre and Mosman Library from 17 October 2013, as well as at the GNB office in Bathurst.

Comments regarding the proposal can be submitted from this date until Monday 18 November 2013 to the Secretary of the GNB and these can be lodged via the GNB website. Submissions, which may be made available to the public on application to the GNB, will be collated at the end of the advertising period and sent to Council for comment before they are further considered by the Board.

An exhibition featuring traditional sculptural works, contemporary installations and 3D works that respond to place. In Situ provides an opportunity to link the best sculptural practices of the past with contemporary artistic approaches to interpreting and enhancing public spaces.

Sporting and Playground Improvements Visiting parklands at Spit West has just become a lot more fun for kids. A fabulous new pirate-themed play structure is now open, incorporating soft fall, fencing and surrounding landscape works. The new equipment and other works built at a cost of $135,000 was chosen following community consultation, with its maritime-inspired elements being the clear winner with local children. As part of ongoing efforts to improve the quality and accessibility of local sportsfields, Council has also lodged a Development Application with the Sydney Harbour Federation Trust to improve floodlighting at Middle Head Oval. The upgrade, anticipated to cost $250,000, will be partly funded by the Mosman Swans Junior Australian Rules Football Club through a $40,000 grant received by the Club from the Department of Sport and Recreation. Annual renovation works including re-turfing, drainage system maintenance, top dressing and wicket square leveling at local sporting fields were also completed in September in preparation for the summer sporting season.
