MOSMANNOW NEWSLETTER Parking consultation moves to next phase The consultation period for Council's Parking Survey has now ended and Council's consultants are busy finalising a report summarising the responses received. There were over 340 responses to the questionnaire completed by residents, visitors and businesses of Mosman. As part of the consultation, Council held workshops for residents and businesses to elicit feedback, discuss parking needs and to talk about parking solutions implemented in other areas. An overwhelming response from the consultation was that ‘Parking is a problem Council needs to address’. With this in mind, Council's next steps include development of detailed options to manage the existing and future parking demands in Mosman. Community feedback will then be sought on these options with the aim of developing a new Parking Strategy for Mosman. Keep an eye on Council's website over the next few months to have your say on these options.

Mosman Bike Plan

Mosman has a number of scenic and well graded cycling routes, offering great opportunities for recreational and commuting cyclists. In late 2010, the Active Transport Working Group was formed with a primary objective to develop a new Mosman Bike Plan. The Group presented a draft plan to Councillors last month and in September Council resolved to place the draft plan on public exhibition. The plans builds on works undertaken in the 2005–2010 Bicycle Plan to provide safe bicycle routes for Mosman residents travelling to local shops and attractions. It includes a works program to ensure that money is spent effectively and efficiently. Public consultation on the draft Plan will begin later this month and will continue through October. A Public Meeting will also be held with a date to be advised soon on Council’s website.

Mayoral Annual Report 2013–14 Included with this issue of Council’s Spring Newsletter is a special insert with a report from Mayor Cr Peter Abelson. The report discusses local autonomy, democracy and related Council policies and actions. It also focusses on inclusiveness in our society and Council's role in fostering social inclusion. The report highlights achievements over the past year across a range Council activities and services.

Game on Swap and Play

Mosman Shapes Up! The results from Council's latest biennial Community Survey bring good news for both Council and residents. Not only do residents seem happier with Council's performance in 2014 than they did in 2012, the community has reported feeling safer and more connected locally than they did two years ago. The 2014 Survey, conducted in late June, recorded the views of 400 randomly selected Mosman residents on Council performance across a range of services and facilities. It also gathered information on residents’ issues and concerns and how we are faring on some key quality of life indicators. Overall satisfaction with Council has been trending up, placing Mosman well above the benchmark for Councils in NSW. Residents have also reported that they not only feel safer in their homes and around their neighbourhood, but also more connected in terms of both seeking assistance and contributing to the local community. The major areas identified for Council's ongoing attention over coming years are traffic management, the development approvals process and provision of car parking – all matters that Council is continuing to actively work on.

Community Groups given a helping hand In August, 18 community groups were presented with Council Community Grants, totalling $34,000, in support of their programs and services. The grants were provided as part of Council's 2014/15 Community Grants program, which provides financial assistance to support non-profit community groups deliver projects that meet identified needs. The Mayor, Cr Peter Abelson acknowledged the invaluable role of community based groups in supporting local residents and highlighted the importance of community groups and Council working together to enhance community life in Mosman.

In July, the Mosman Youth Forum launched MOSCARD, a youth membership card that provides incentives for young people aged 12–25 to spend more time in Mosman while promoting participating businesses, events and opportunities directly to youth. MOSCARD members not only get access to exclusive discounts at participating businesses, they also receive monthly e-newsletters containing information about events, competitions and skills development and training and volunteer opportunities available to young people in Mosman. The initiative has quickly proved popular, with over 150 young people from 18 schools and six tertiary institutions signing up in the first four weeks. The Youth Forum is excited about the range of businesses already involved. Current offers include deals for food and drinks, movies, fitness and outdoor activities as well as hair salon packages. "MOSCARD will give young people the incentive to catch up with friends closer to home", says Youth Forum member Nicky Hughson. Local businesses and young people are encouraged to get involved now by heading to www.moscard.com.au.

Eye on Lucy Culliton

Young people from Mosman recently took park in two skills development workshops that covered the topics of event management and booking gigs and environmental sustainability. The sessions were led by two inspiring young people: Artist Voice talent agent Bec Young (Chet Faker, Horrorshow, Angus & Julia Stone) and Tim Silverwood, co-founder of the 'Take 3' movement. Other past and upcoming skills development workshops include media and marketing, barista accreditation and 'Job Ready' workshops. The 24/7 Youth Film Festival, held annually in partnership with Manly, Pittwater and Warringah Councils, was recently completed for 2014 with 30 groups entering the competition. Young people from the region worked in groups to produce a short-film in 24 hours and went in the running to win over $7,000 in prizes. The final screening and awards ceremony took place on 14 September at Warriewood Cinemas. Young people interested in finding out about any of these initiatives, including youth volunteering, blog contributing and upcoming opportunities should head to www.mosmanyouth.com.au

Mosman Design Awards Nominations open soon... Nominations will open in mid-October this year for the 2015 Mosman Design Awards. The awards allow Council to recognise and celebrate outstanding contributions to the built environment and provides architects, builders and owners an opportunity to exhibit their achievements within the Mosman Local Government Area.

Mosman Art Gallery’s Spring program, Eye of the Beholder: The Art of Lucy Culliton, features more than 130 artworks exploring the artist’s work from 1997 to 2014 – which are natural, direct, unpretentious and highly colourful. Eye of the Beholder offers the first survey exhibition on the work of Lucy Culliton – one of the most talented and much loved of Australia’s contemporary painters. An authentic creative spirit with an inexorable passion for her work, Lucy Culliton’s artistic output during this period has been remarkable. Since graduating from Sydney’s National Art School in 1996, Culliton’s career has ascended to the point where she is arguably one of our important representational and most keenly collected contemporary artists. Culliton appraises her subjects with thoughtful authority, working in series with an intense scrutiny of a single subject. Her gaze consistently moves between Australian and international plein air landscapes, domestic still life subjects (food, plants and vintage curios), interiors, portraiture and figurative works.

The Mosman Design Awards commenced in 2007 and are held every two years. The Awards continue to gain popularity and prestige due to the high quality of entrants and the panel of expert judges. The awards have previously been recognised with a NSW Planning Institute of Australia Media Award.

Winner of the Mosman Art Prize in 2000 and Portia Geach Memorial Award in 2006, Lucy is also well known as a regular finalist in the Archibald, Wynne and Sulman Prizes at AGNSW and is represented in important public and private art collections.

The fight to save our Trees A staggering number of trees have been lost in Mosman since the recent introduction of the 10/50 Vegetation Clearing Code of Practice. While the Code may appear convenient to some, there are great concerns over its long term impact on our beautiful suburb and Council has been making a concerted effort to bring this needless destruction to the attention of State authorities. We have been in talks with the NSW Rural Fire Service, seeking a more sensible way forward and have sought an immediate moratorium on the urban maps currently used to define the areas to which the 10/50 Code applies. If you share Council’s concern, consider making a submission to the NSW Rural Fire Service at www.rfs.nsw.gov.au, marked to the attention of the RFS Commissioner. More information about the 10/50 law can be found at www.rfs.nsw.gov.au/news-and-media or by visiting Council's website.
