merrychristmas Lighting up Mosman Residents out and about in Mosman after dark may have noticed new fairy lights on selected trees in Mosman which have been installed just in time for Christmas. A number of trees in Mosman Square are now dressed in lights including a signature fig fronting the Village Green. Mosman's major retail strip also benefits from new lighting, with selected trees along Military Road now sparkling with fairy lights each evening. The new decorative lighting forms part of an ongoing program of works to further enhance the appeal of Mosman's public spaces and aims to encourage locals and visitors to experience our beautiful suburb after the sun goes down. The new lighting uses long-lasting, energy-efficient LED technology to ensure it will look good for years to come, as well as being kinder to our environment. Mosman’s Rapt Christmas decorating competition is back again this year and residents and businesses can add to the streetscape appeal by lighting their homes and shopfronts. There are also a number of events on through December and January, and locals and visitors are encouraged to get involved and enjoy all Mosman has to offer.

Enrol for MOCC 2018

Environment in top shape Mosman Council's retrofit upgrades to lighting in buildings and carparks and sporting fields have significantly reduced Council's energy consumption, the latest State of the Environment Report has shown. The snapshot of the past five years of Mosman's natural and cultural environment has also confirmed the impact of water refill stations, resulting in 37,000 single use plastic bottles saved from landfill over a period of 12 months, and improvement in storm water capture devices, which help improve water use efficiency. Bushcare volunteers and Council staff have continued to improve the state of our flora and fauna with the 'There's no such thing as the Dog Poo fairy' campaign resulting in a 65% reduction of dog poo left in Council parks and reserves, 2,156 tonnes of waste being collected from Mosman beaches and reserves and 240,000kg of e-waste collected and diverted from landfill. The report will be available in early 2018 at mosman.nsw.gov.au

MOCC Children’s Early Education and Care Centre has opened applications for 2018 pre-school places. MOCC offers a preschool program for children aged 3–5 years on Mondays and Tuesdays, 8am–4pm from its central location at Allan Border Oval Pavilion. MOCC provides an educational program based on the National Early Years Learning Framework, focussing on children's individual interests and strengths in preparing them for school. Bush to Bay exhibition

History repositioned Council has completed works re-positioning an historic sundial at Mosman Bay, near the Sirius Memorial. The sundial and accompanying plaque, which notes Mosman's contribution to Australia's war effort, was removed several years ago when the Mosman War Memorial and surrounding garden was upgraded in recognition of Mosman enlistees for WWII, Korea, Malaya, Borneo, Vietnam, Gulf War, East Timor, Iraq, Afghanistan and the Boer War. The sundial, which is inscribed with the words A tribute from the citizens of Mosman, was originally installed in 1952.

Mosman Council is seeking volunteers to assist with social support for the elderly with tasks such as shopping at the local supermarket, taking someone to an appointment or just dropping by for a cup of tea and a chat. Studies have shown that volunteering is just as beneficial for the volunteer as for the recipient so if you’d like to make a positive difference to your own wellbeing while helping someone in your community then we would love to hear from you. Please contact our Volunteer Office on 9978 4126. Mosman Youth also has exciting volunteering opportunities coming up in 2018 for young people to get involved in planning and running large music events through Vocal Rewind or organising community projects that tackle environmental issues through View Finders. Young people can also put their marketing skills to work online and offline through the Mospress group or educate their peers on nutrition through FRESH. Visit mosmanyouth.com.au or call 9978 4013.

Promenade reopens

B-Line arrives The NSW Government’s B-Line service has begun operating between Mona Vale and Wynyard coinciding with the completion of the city-bound and outbound bus stops and bus indent at Spit Junction. Friendship City visit Council hosted a delegation from Mosman's Friendship City, Mudanjiang, China, in November - the first delegation to visit Mosman since 2014. The relationship has developed steadily since the Friendship Agreement was first signed 19 years ago and education has been a key focus over that time. As part of the relationship, Mosman Council and community members along with Mosman Rotary have supported more than 1,000 girls from disadvantaged backgrounds through the Girl Child Education Project.

Balmoral Promenade has been reopened after refurbishment works were completed on schedule and within budget. The footpath design was settled on with input from the Visual Amenity Community Consultative Committee, architects and structural engineers. This ensured it was in keeping with the heritage significance of the seawall which has attracted positive feedback. The works will remain in place for the next 50 years and because of their significance it was considered important the project was not rushed to ensure high quality standards were maintained. Further works will now be carried out around the Rotunda in March and April while additional concrete seating will be installed south of Balmoral Baths after the Easter holidays in 2018. In another major upgrade, designs for the new-look Mosman Junction roundabout have been completed and the project will go to tender before Christmas so that works can start in the New Year. Pedestrian access will be improved and footpaths widened with additional lighting installed to promote outdoor dining in line with community requests for additional outdoor and evening dining opportunities. Residents and businesses will be notified of temporary changes to road access once project timelines are known.
