Issue 24 Summer 2018/19

NEWSLETTER Seasons greetings Spit East Upgrade The popular Spit East area is undergoing a major streetscape upgrade to improve the safety, access and amenity of the area. The new work will also enhance the area as the northern gateway to Mosman. Upgrade works will continue into 2019. A break has been scheduled over the busy summer holiday period so that visitors and local families can continue to enjoy the area and inconvenience to nearby businesses is also minimised over the peak season. Stage 1 of the upgrade runs until mid-December focussing on the northern end of the foreshore area. Work undertaken during this stage includes a new laneway, a new bus bay and bus shelter, traffic calming, new pedestrian paving, new seats and bike hoops, and landscaping with trees and garden beds. Stage 2 will commence in February/March 2019 and will focus on the commercial area of Spit East. This stage will deliver a new parking area, upgrades to the laneway and footpaths, a new loading zone, traffic calming, new paving, and more landscaping with trees and garden beds. Throughout the work there will be ongoing pedestrian access to local shops, restaurants and other businesses and residents are encouraged to keep visiting during the upgrades. To find out more about this project please call 9978 4053 or contact the project team on spiteast@mosman.nsw.gov.au A project timeline is also available on Council’s website.

Balmoral set for summer

Youth volunteering 2019 Following the summer break, Mosman Youth Service will re-launch its exciting volunteer programs for young people aged 14–24. Mosman Youth now offers five volunteer initiatives for those looking to make an impact on the community, develop new skills and meet like-minded people. Opportunities include media campaigning, running live music events, nutrition education, and supporting environmental sustainability. Highlights of 2018 included Turning the Tides at Clifton Gardens in which Mosman Youth volunteers raised awareness for marine conservation with community stalls and guided snorkel sessions. Volunteers also delivered four local music events, produced campaign movies, and created weekly food parcels for at-risk young people in local crisis accommodation. To register your interest and join a vibrant community of volunteers at Mosman Youth Service, email youth@mosman.nsw.gov.au

A suite of essential repair and renewal projects along the iconic Balmoral foreshore has been fully completed in time for summer. Residents and visitors taking a stroll along the promenade will notice a number of upgrades to key infrastructure within the historic precinct, as well as some aesthetic improvements. Infrastructure along Balmoral’s foreshore – including the promenade itself – goes back almost 90 years and even the more contemporary additions are more than 40 years old. The recent works program, seen as an investment in Balmoral’s long-term future, includes new paving around the Balmoral Rotunda and Public Dining Room, replacement of the dilapidated stormwater pipe on Balmoral Beach, installation of new seating at the southern end of Balmoral Promenade, new decking in front of the Boatshed and Kiosk, new floating turning boards for swimmers at Balmoral Baths, and upgraded fitness equipment at Balmoral Oval. The Balmoral works are part of an ongoing program of infrastructure repair and renewal around the suburb. New roundabout works Work has commenced on construction of a new roundabout at the corner of Rangers Avenue and Park Avenue Mosman. The overall project, which also includes refuge islands, pram ramps, kerb and gutter, and footpath works, is expected to take approximately 2 months to complete. The $250,000 project will deliver a safer traffic environment around the intersection of Rangers Avenue and Park Avenue, as well as improving safety for pedestrians. Some traffic delays are anticipated during the construction period and parking will be suspended in affected areas. There will be no work or road closures during the Christmas/New Year period.

Mosman Design Awards 2019

Library upgrade underway The creation of an Indoor Garden Reading Zone and roof repairs at Barry O’Keefe Library began on 9 November, with the program of works expected to continue until 23 December. The currently unusable outdoor space on the lower level of the library is being converted to a tranquil indoor garden reading and study zone. The overall project will also include recarpeting, painting, repairs and vital roof rectification works. While the library is largely remaining open during this time, there will be periods of noise disruption with some sections of the library closed intermittently. It has been necessary to close the lower level reading and study area, however access is still available to Local Studies, lower level meeting rooms and computers and all upper level areas and resources. Apps making life easier In addition to the popular MyMosman app, Council has two other apps designed to make life easier for residents. Trees Mosman, the latest app available for download, contains all tree information in one handy place and is designed to simplify the tree permit process and better explain Council’s tree-related policies. The app allows users to submit a tree permit application, request a street tree planting, report suspicious tree work and calculate tree protection zones when planning construction or development works. Loaded with high quality images and detailed descriptions of exempt species, a frequently asked questions page and links for tree-related information and issues, the app provides a one-stop resource for both residents and arborists. The Park Mosman app, released in 2017, enables motorists to view real-time parking availability in the main shopping areas of Mosman. The app also allows users to set a reminder to return to their vehicle at the appropriate time. To download any of these free apps, go to the iPhone App Store or Google Play store.

1 exhibition . 3 galleries . 9 artists Mosman Art Gallery has once again teamed up with Manly Art Gallery & Museum and S. H. Ervin Gallery, collaborating for the second time in three years to showcase 140 key works by nine of Australia’s most important artists in a new exhibition: Destination Sydney re-imagined. The nine artists represented in the exhibition are Ken Done, Adrian Feint, Ethel Carrick Fox, Nicholas Harding, Michael Johnson, Robert Klippel, Roy De Maistre, Wendy Sharpe and Jeffrey Smart. The three galleries have come together to stage Destination Sydney reimagined following the outstanding success of their 2015-16 collaboration, Destination Sydney, which attracted record attendances of 75,000 people and won the industry award for Best Exhibition in NSW in 2016. This exhibition has again been curated by art historian Lou Klepac working with Michael Hedger and Katherine Roberts (Manly Art Gallery & Museum); John Cheeseman and Katrina Cashman (Mosman Art Gallery) and Jane Watters (National Trust S.H. Ervin Gallery). All artworks selected for the exhibition respond to the theme of Sydney as a destination for creative endeavours. Destination Sydney re-imagined will be on show from Saturday 8 December 2018–Sunday 17 March 2019.

Park improvements Works to upgrade Middle Head Oval’s playing surface are on track and the oval is expected to be reopened for use by early February 2019. The works, which began in early September, include relevelling of the playing surface, soil remediation works, installation of a new natural turf surface and installation of a new irrigation system. This project is one of several sports field upgrades being undertaken around Mosman, with a total of 14,000m of turf being laid and 328 tonnes of top soil brought in to replenish the grounds after heavy and continued use through the winter season. In other improvements, barbecues are now available at several local parks, with recent installations at Rosherville Reserve and Sirius Cove following last year’s installation of barbecues at Clifton Gardens and Spit West.
